- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Italian with Fexingo! I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Episode 37. Can you believe it? Lucas: I know. Getting close to forty. Today we're tackling a super practical topic. Luna: Ooh, I love practical. Let me guess... asking for directions? Lucas: You guessed it! 'Chiedere indicazioni' — asking for directions. A must for any trip to Italy. Luna: Absolutely. I remember wandering around a small town once and getting totally lost. Lucas: It happens. But if you know a few key phrases, you’ll feel a lot more confident. Luna: So where do we start? Lucas: Let’s begin with the most basic question: 'Dov'è...?' — 'Where is...?' Say it with me: Dov'è? Luna: Dov'è? Lucas: Perfect. The stress is on the 'è'. So, Dov'è la stazione? — Where is the station? Dov'è il ristorante? — Where is the restaurant? Luna: Dov'è il ristorante. Got it. Lucas: Now, Luna, if you ask 'Dov'è il museo?', someone might answer with directions. Let's learn three key direction words. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Lucas: First: 'A destra' — to the right. Repeat: A destra. Luna: A destra. Lucas: Second: 'A sinistra' — to the left. A sinistra. Luna: A sinistra. That one's a little trickier. Lucas: It is. Try again: A sinistra. Luna: A sinistra. Okay, I think I have it. Lucas: And third: 'Sempre dritto' — straight ahead. Sempre dritto. Luna: Sempre dritto. That one's easy. 'Sempre' means always, right? Lucas: Exactly. So 'sempre dritto' is literally 'always straight'. Let's practice a short dialog. I'll be the local, you ask for directions. Luna: Okay. So... Dov'è il museo? Lucas: Good! And I answer: 'A destra, poi sempre dritto.' — To the right, then straight ahead. Luna: A destra, poi sempre dritto. Poi means 'then'? Lucas: Right. Let's reverse roles. I'll ask: Dov'è la stazione? Luna: Umm... A sinistra e poi a destra? Lucas: Perfect! A sinistra e poi a destra. That's a real direction. Luna: Yes! Now I need to remember to say 'grazie' after. Lucas: Always say grazie. 'Grazie' — thank you. So the full exchange: you ask, I answer, you say grazie. Luna: Grazie. Simple. Lucas: Let's do a longer practice. Imagine you're looking for the Duomo in Florence. Ask me. Luna: Dov'è il Duomo? Lucas: Sempre dritto, poi a sinistra. Luna: Sempre dritto, poi a sinistra. Grazie! Lucas: Prego! That's 'you're welcome'. Prego. Luna: Prego. Okay, so the whole exchange: Dov'è il Duomo? Sempre dritto, poi a sinistra. Grazie. Prego. Lucas: You've got it. Now, let's hear you say all three direction words one more time. Luna: A destra, a sinistra, sempre dritto. Lucas: Beautiful. Let's wrap up with a little story. Imagine you're in Rome and you ask a local for the Colosseum. Luna: Dov'è il Colosseo? Lucas: The local says: 'A destra, poi a destra, poi sempre dritto.' That's three steps. Luna: A destra, poi a destra, poi sempre dritto. Okay, I think I'd manage. Lucas: You would. And if you get lost again, you can always ask again. Italians are friendly. Luna: Good to know. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: My pleasure. So, listeners, today you learned 'Dov'è...?', 'A destra', 'A sinistra', 'Sempre dritto', and 'grazie'. Practice them until next time. Luna: And don't forget to say 'prego' when someone thanks you. This is Learn Italian with Fexingo. Ciao! Lucas: Ciao ciao!
