  SPEAKER_01: My name's Dakota.
• 0:12
SPEAKER_01: I am one fourth of your hosts, and we are Project Geek Cology, and we are joined as always with Anthony.
• 0:16
SPEAKER_02: And I thought you were doing like a podcast intro to uh Cowboy Bebop.
• 0:21
SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh, are we doing this again?
• 0:23
SPEAKER_02: Um But yes, and uh like you said, we are covering Godzilla, King of the Monsters, and joining us as well.
• 0:33
SPEAKER_01: I didn't even say that, so thank you.
• 0:34
SPEAKER_01: Thank you for covering for me.
• 0:35
  SPEAKER_01: Yes.
• 0:36
SPEAKER_03: Joining us as always is Rich.
• 0:40
SPEAKER_03: And I'm uh very excited to uh just smash our way uh through this this monster verse.
• 0:48
SPEAKER_03: Uh just I know you guys have touched on it before, but uh we can't do this alone.
• 0:53
SPEAKER_03: We need one more to round out the quartet, and we're joined as always by Hi, I'm Jen.
• 0:59
SPEAKER_00: Excited to talk about Mothra.
• 1:02
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Jen Jen wasn't around last time.
• 1:04
SPEAKER_00: No, I was not around last time.
• 1:06
  SPEAKER_01: No.
• 1:07
SPEAKER_01: Um, and neither was Rich actually.
• 1:10
SPEAKER_01: Last time we covered uh a monsterverse uh podcast.
• 1:15
SPEAKER_01: So we have a lot to cover today because um I want to actually you know, before we jump into the actual discussion of uh at hand, Rich, this was your first ever Monster Verse or or actually any monster movie uh like introduction to like Godzilla and King Kong, correct?
• 1:37
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I've never seen I mean there was like a Matthew Broderick movie, I think came out when I was in high school.
• 1:43
SPEAKER_03: I just remember like the bus was covered in Godzilla like advertisements when I got when I was taking it to school.
• 1:51
SPEAKER_03: But other than that, like I have I have a general knowledge of Godzilla, right?
• 1:57
SPEAKER_03: I know that Godzilla is I've seen like I don't know, clips not even like on YouTube or anything like that.
• 2:03
SPEAKER_03: I just mean like in pop culture, like maybe even like somebody on a show was watching Godzilla, you know, and you saw like a clip of it, or you saw like a kid playing like in a TV show with a Godzilla monster.
• 2:16
SPEAKER_03: So I knew Godzilla, right?
• 2:19
SPEAKER_03: And I know uh King Kong, I played this Skull Island game or something for Xbox 360 uh a while back when so like when Xbox 360 first came out to get like gamer points.
• 2:31
SPEAKER_01: I think you're talking about the 2005 King Kong film uh from Peter Jackson, they made a video game that was actually really good.
• 2:37
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, really, really cool, well done video games.
• 2:40
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, surprisingly, right?
• 2:42
SPEAKER_02: Like that was the era of licensed video games, and like that was actually one of the good ones.
• 2:47
SPEAKER_03: And I the only reason I played it, actually, I had no interest in King Kong.
• 2:52
SPEAKER_03: It was because the early games, uh, when they had for achievements, they didn't really know how to do it.
• 3:00
SPEAKER_03: So each achievement, like each game was allowed a thousand achievement points, right?
• 3:05
SPEAKER_03: But in games like early games, it would be like finish the first chapter of the game, 250 points.
• 3:12
SPEAKER_03: Like you'd you would just clean up.
• 3:14
SPEAKER_03: So my friend and I work in a race to try to get the most gamer points.
• 3:18
SPEAKER_03: So I would go to like Blockbuster and just literally rent like any available title, right?
• 3:24
SPEAKER_03: It didn't matter uh because those early games just you'd clean up.
• 3:29
SPEAKER_03: Uh but Kong was actually one of the more enjoyable ones.
• 3:32
  SPEAKER_03: Like I didn't it didn't feel like a grind.
• 3:34
SPEAKER_03: So I kind of I guess maybe knew more about Kong because of that game than I did about Godzilla.
• 3:40
  SPEAKER_03: Okay.
• 3:41
SPEAKER_03: But I'd still say I was pretty much like, you know, it's like somebody who goes to watch Star Wars and obviously knows of Darth Vader, like of him because he's such a prominent, you know.
• 3:53
  SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
• 3:54
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 3:54
SPEAKER_01: So actually, we're gonna start with you this week for what we've been up to this past week, because you have uh done a little homework in the lead up to this movie, and you watched both Godzilla 2014 and uh Kong Skull Island.
• 4:09
SPEAKER_01: So, what were your thoughts on these these uh two introductions to these characters within this monster verse universe?
• 4:16
SPEAKER_03: Alright, so and actually it's kind of cool because my family, uh Lauren and Charlie, both watched Godzilla.
• 4:21
SPEAKER_03: They didn't watch Kong, but they watched Godzilla 2014.
• 4:25
SPEAKER_03: Uh so I well I think I t I texted you guys while I was watching it.
• 4:31
SPEAKER_03: Uh I was like, when in God's name is Godzilla going to show up in this movie?
• 4:40
  SPEAKER_03: Like, man, delayed introduction.
• 4:42
SPEAKER_03: They made me wait like a full hour.
• 4:45
SPEAKER_03: You know, uh I was very annoyed.
• 4:48
SPEAKER_01: It's not exaggeration either, yeah.
• 4:49
SPEAKER_03: Very, I'm not gonna lie, very annoyed, very annoyed, very annoyed.
• 4:52
SPEAKER_03: Uh, did I think like the payoff was worth it?
• 4:55
SPEAKER_03: I guess, yeah, you know, I'm just an impatient man.
• 4:58
SPEAKER_03: So uh I I think my only like I really liked the first one, by and large.
• 5:03
SPEAKER_03: I think uh I was surprised that by Brian Cranston was in it.
• 5:06
SPEAKER_03: I was like, whoa, what's going on?
• 5:09
SPEAKER_03: I uh was I thought these movies were more star studied than I thought they were gonna be, and I was you know pleasantly surprised by that.
• 5:16
SPEAKER_03: The only complaint I had, and it's funny because Lauren had the same one, is just uh uh the darkness of Godzilla.
• 5:23
SPEAKER_03: Like I just and I understand It's a movie you have to watch at night.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_03: You know, it's that's the only thing that that annoys me.
• 5:31
  SPEAKER_03: I don't like that.
• 5:32
SPEAKER_03: I understand you know, it's a technique that's been used in some film, and people have debated, and I don't want to get into that too far, but I will say that like watching Kong right after was awesome because I was like first like you just turn the movie on and it's like hey, it's Kong, you know, and then like you'd even like when the helicopters arrive and he's just um he's like fighting them and it's in bright daylight, you know.
• 5:56
SPEAKER_03: I was like, yeah, man.
• 5:57
SPEAKER_03: I'm like, give me a movie with some bright daylight fights.
• 6:00
SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna lie to you.
• 6:02
  SPEAKER_03: I love Kong.
• 6:04
SPEAKER_03: Like I've watched it three times since I started like since last week, whenever I watched Godzilla right away, and then I watched Kong like three times uh before I even watched Godzilla King of the Monsters.
• 6:16
  SPEAKER_03: I love that movie.
• 6:18
SPEAKER_03: It it when I heard John C.
• 6:21
SPEAKER_03: Riley, it was like the voice of an angel, right?
• 6:25
  SPEAKER_03: John C.
• 6:26
SPEAKER_03: Riley, I like I heard him like, Hi guys, it's me, John C.
• 6:29
SPEAKER_03: Riley, you know, whatever his voice is like, and oh my goodness, my heart leapt.
• 6:35
SPEAKER_03: Uh Sam Jackson, uh Bree Larson, uh John C.
• 6:40
SPEAKER_03: Riley, Loki, who's got a real name that I can't remember right now.
• 6:44
  SPEAKER_03: I don't care.
• 6:45
  SPEAKER_03: I loved Kong.
• 6:48
  SPEAKER_03: I loved Kong himself.
• 6:50
SPEAKER_03: I loved how expressive he is, uh, how smart he is.
• 6:55
SPEAKER_03: I love and I know it's not like I know that the the the relationship between the movies is very tenuous.
• 7:03
SPEAKER_03: It's just like monarch, right?
• 7:05
SPEAKER_03: Like, hey, you know, because like Kong's just out of the picture after that.
• 7:09
SPEAKER_01: Like, you don't really yeah, they they operate on different wavelengths, these two creatures, until the next film, if we you know, if when we cover uh Godzilla vs.
• 7:18
SPEAKER_01: Kong, it is literally Godzilla versus Kong.
• 7:21
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, wait, what?
• 7:22
  SPEAKER_03: Wait, what?
• 7:22
SPEAKER_01: Oh, you didn't know that.
• 7:24
SPEAKER_01: The next movie is called Godzilla v.
• 7:26
  SPEAKER_01: Kong.
• 7:26
SPEAKER_00: You've been talking about this so much that I assumed you knew that.
• 7:29
SPEAKER_00: No, once they put guys on the cards.
• 7:30
SPEAKER_00: Rich has been talking about this like all day at work, just so everybody knows.
• 7:34
  SPEAKER_00: Once you guys nonstop.
• 7:35
SPEAKER_03: Once you guys put guardrails on me, like I he puts blinders on, which I appreciate.
• 7:40
  SPEAKER_03: I actually do.
• 7:41
  SPEAKER_03: I really appreciate it.
• 7:41
SPEAKER_03: Like you told me, don't go forward.
• 7:43
SPEAKER_03: So, like, I'm not watching the the series yet.
• 7:46
  SPEAKER_03: I'm not, I just kept re-watching that stuff.
• 7:49
SPEAKER_03: But uh, yeah, no, Kong is fan, just whoo! So good.
• 7:54
  SPEAKER_03: Love it.
• 7:55
  SPEAKER_04: Just whew.
• 7:56
SPEAKER_03: I uh really big fan.
• 7:58
SPEAKER_03: And somehow between all that stuff, I still got to go see uh Mandalorian and Grogu.
• 8:03
SPEAKER_03: So uh so what have you guys been up to?
• 8:05
SPEAKER_01: Anthony, what are what have you been up to?
• 8:07
SPEAKER_02: Um I had also seen uh Mandalorian and Grogu.
• 8:12
SPEAKER_02: Um I saw it yesterday as as of recording.
• 8:15
SPEAKER_02: We're recording on a Monday on uh Memorial Day, and so I saw it on Sunday.
• 8:21
SPEAKER_02: Been playing uh still playing NTE, you know, Neverness to Everness.
• 8:27
SPEAKER_02: So I've been enjoying that, been um doing this uh there's this thing called uh Pink Paws Heist, and you get like a a lot of money in that.
• 8:38
SPEAKER_02: So I've been grinding that.
• 8:40
SPEAKER_02: Uh and they just did like the the bi-weekly reset, so it it's the the cap is uh is a million fawns, like that's the the current the currency in that game, and uh so they did the reset on that, so like now everybody is like you know grinding to get like a bunch of like fawns from that.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_02: But yeah, and then you know I watched uh Godzilla, King of the Monsters, and nothing nothing too crazy, not not that I not that I could think of how about you all how about you, Jen, since the the camera's focusing on you.
• 9:17
  SPEAKER_00: Camera's acting w wild today.
• 9:19
  SPEAKER_00: I don't know what's going on.
• 9:21
SPEAKER_00: Well, Dakota and I saw a fantastic film in the theater, and I tried to encourage everyone to see it, but you guys didn't want to cover it on the podcast, according to Dakota.
• 9:34
SPEAKER_00: He he tried on my behalf to get you all to watch sheep detectives, and guess what?
• 9:39
  SPEAKER_00: You're all missing out.
• 9:40
  SPEAKER_00: Um you're wrong.
• 9:41
  SPEAKER_00: If you're if you're a sheep detectives denier, you're incorrect.
• 9:46
SPEAKER_00: Um and I'm also playing a game on theme.
• 9:49
SPEAKER_00: I was just playing it because it helps me like focus called Where is it?
• 9:53
  SPEAKER_00: Where'd my game go?
• 9:54
  SPEAKER_00: Yarn Fever.
• 9:56
SPEAKER_00: I've been addicted to this game called Yarn Fever, so I have a real theme going.
• 10:00
SPEAKER_00: A real theme in my life.
• 10:01
  SPEAKER_00: Sheep detectives, yarn fever.
• 10:03
SPEAKER_01: I mean Is Yarn wool?
• 10:05
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 10:06
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 10:07
SPEAKER_00: I mean, you can make it from like alpaca instead of sheep, but I mean typically anyway.
• 10:12
SPEAKER_01: Uh Sheep Detectives is surprisingly good.
• 10:14
SPEAKER_01: It's one of those movies that uh it doesn't look like it.
• 10:18
SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you watch the trailers, you you you realize, oh wait, that's a really good uh idea for a story.
• 10:23
SPEAKER_01: Um, but when you actually think, like, is this gonna be a good movie, or is this just gonna be a kid's movie that you know is gonna be forgettable?
• 10:32
SPEAKER_01: I think you're gonna remember this one.
• 10:33
SPEAKER_01: Like, I think um the the critics are are actually correct on this on this one because I think it's sitting at like a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's just delightful.
• 10:45
  SPEAKER_01: It's delightful.
• 10:47
SPEAKER_01: I may or may not have teared up on more than one occasion.
• 10:51
SPEAKER_00: And uh I think you like actually cried.
• 10:52
  SPEAKER_00: I don't think you teared up.
• 10:54
SPEAKER_03: Let's let's not tell these people that now they know is this uh this is adapted from Charles Sowell's uh Death of Wolverine, right?
• 11:06
SPEAKER_00: There actually is a book adaptation.
• 11:08
SPEAKER_01: No, it's it's uh Light of the Jedi.
• 11:10
SPEAKER_01: We actually covered it a while back, but anyway, um it's it's a really good movie.
• 11:14
SPEAKER_01: And uh we have yet to see Mandalorian and Grogu, which was actually a first for us.
• 11:19
SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't think I've ever prioritized another movie in theaters than a new Star Wars movie.
• 11:24
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is kind of crazy for us.
• 11:26
  SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's really doesn't bode well for Mando.
• 11:28
SPEAKER_01: I've ever I've never actually not seen a Star Wars movie opening day in my lifetime.
• 11:34
  SPEAKER_02: That's wild.
• 11:35
SPEAKER_02: I I I think it it it's probably because of the the reviews.
• 11:39
  SPEAKER_02: I would say I don't know, man.
• 11:42
SPEAKER_01: No, I think even before even before the reviews, I was I was just like We were so dead setting up.
• 11:52
SPEAKER_01: The the first my first reaction to the the trailer when it first dropped a couple months back, I thought that that was gonna be bottom barrel stuff.
• 12:00
SPEAKER_02: But I don't know, I haven't seen it so well for for for me, like I would I would say I I agree.
• 12:06
SPEAKER_02: I think that they should have just kept the show going.
• 12:08
SPEAKER_02: I don't know why, you know, that that's pretty much like when when you do a movie for a TV show, that that pretty much means like, okay, yeah, we're done, you know?
• 12:19
SPEAKER_02: So I don't know why they decided to do a TV show or a movie off of a TV show.
• 12:26
SPEAKER_02: And I and I just think that that maybe because they had nothing, they had nothing really to like come out with.
• 12:32
SPEAKER_02: So they're like, okay, let's let's just do season four of Mando as a movie.
• 12:38
SPEAKER_02: So like I said, I understand some of the gripes, but like from from what we got, I don't think it's a 61%.
• 12:46
SPEAKER_02: I really don't think I think that that's like below the belt kind of reviewing it.
• 12:51
SPEAKER_02: But I mean you guys know I have like a weird relationship with like professional like critics.
• 12:56
  SPEAKER_00: I think that I didn't I didn't know that about you, Anthony.
• 13:00
  SPEAKER_02: No, I do.
• 13:01
  SPEAKER_02: I do.
• 13:02
  SPEAKER_00: I I I I think I don't know much about your relationship history.
• 13:05
  SPEAKER_00: I didn't know this about it.
• 13:06
SPEAKER_02: I think I I think that like we're in an age that like people aren't as objective anymore, which I think that you should be objective if you're gonna be reviewing something.
• 13:17
SPEAKER_02: It's okay to to to inject a bit a little bit of bias.
• 13:21
SPEAKER_02: Like I said, like I think that there are like gripes are credible, and I don't think it's like a 90 above, but I I think that you could give it like a solid 70 to 75%.
• 13:32
SPEAKER_02: Like I think it there is some saving graces, but I do think it should have they should have just kept it as a show.
• 13:38
SPEAKER_03: You know what the um my only thing is this like I think that Disney Plus obviously changed things and the pandemic and the release of things, right?
• 13:47
SPEAKER_03: But like here here's my thing.
• 13:49
SPEAKER_03: If if um Skeleton Crew, which I just loved, right?
• 13:55
SPEAKER_03: If Skeleton Crew had been released as a movie, I think people would have been like, man, that was really fun, that was really good, right?
• 14:03
SPEAKER_03: And what was happening and what I think Disney Plus was allowing Star Wars to do was expand the universe and tell stories outside of the Skywalker saga, right?
• 14:14
SPEAKER_03: This is the first one really that's kind of come out that's not really tied to the Skywalker saga, and I think that there were expectations that it was gonna be Skywalker Saga-esque.
• 14:28
SPEAKER_03: And to me, this was just an expanded universe release that was fun.
• 14:34
SPEAKER_03: You know, like I'm not looking for that other stuff.
• 14:37
SPEAKER_03: I was Mando, listen, listen, those babu fricks, and whatever you guys say right now, I'm telling you, I'm telling you, transformative, transformative those guys were, okay?
• 14:50
SPEAKER_03: And I don't care what anyone thinks about me out there.
• 14:52
SPEAKER_03: I mean, hearing Lauren like giggle, like multiple like she was awake the whole time.
• 14:59
  SPEAKER_03: I couldn't believe it, okay?
• 15:01
SPEAKER_03: The whole time, loving it, you know, and and and that actually made it a little bit more fun for me too, you know.
• 15:08
SPEAKER_03: Like I didn't I loved that I got to go see a Star Wars movie with my family and everybody was entertained, you know, and I and I didn't have to explain 9,000 things to them, you know, like oh that blah blah blah blah blah and the extended comics, blah blah blah blah blah blah.
• 15:25
SPEAKER_03: It goes further on this, you know, and then you find out that Palpa, you know, like and somehow Palpatine returns, you know.
• 15:31
SPEAKER_02: That that that's what I I think that that's that's how they should have kept the show.
• 15:36
SPEAKER_02: Like that's how the first season was.
• 15:39
SPEAKER_02: And like thinking in hindsight, like I think that they should have just kept Mandalo the the Mando in his own corner of the universe.
• 15:47
SPEAKER_02: They shouldn't have incorporated um uh Ahsoka or anybody.
• 15:52
SPEAKER_02: I think that Boba Fett made sense just because he's kind of in like the the the same line, but I think that Boba Fett should have showed up like maybe a few like give Mando his time, maybe a few few seasons, and then season four you get Boba and you're like, Whoa, what Boba Fett?
• 16:09
SPEAKER_02: You know, they but they should have kept him in his own like corner of the universe while um while Grogu kind of like like you know you learn a little bit more about Grogu's past and then like how and then you know he grows like in the force kind of in a way like he comes across people instead of you getting uh Luke Skywalker and all that stuff.
• 16:28
SPEAKER_02: I I feel like some of that stuff kind of ruins the magic of the show that we got in the first season.
• 16:34
  SPEAKER_00: Awesome.
• 16:35
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I didn't realize that we had agreed to a uh Star Wars.
• 16:39
  SPEAKER_00: We did.
• 16:39
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I realized we were talking about that for a while.
• 16:41
SPEAKER_01: Uh to pull us out of it a little bit.
• 16:44
SPEAKER_01: Um last time we recorded, I had just finished the first um The D book.
• 16:50
  SPEAKER_01: Dungeon Crawler Carl.
• 16:51
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 16:52
SPEAKER_01: DCC uh Dungeon Crawler Carl.
• 16:55
SPEAKER_01: And I am now like halfway through book four.
• 16:58
  SPEAKER_01: I'm really loving it.
• 16:59
  SPEAKER_01: It's it's a really creative world.
• 17:02
SPEAKER_01: And uh the what's great is that like every floor that they go to has different rules.
• 17:08
SPEAKER_01: And what's what's great about the actual story is that the characters You said you said that this is dungeon jun dungeon crawler querito?
• 17:20
  SPEAKER_01: No, Carlito.
• 17:22
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, yeah, Quirito, okay, yeah, from uh Sword Art and Line.
• 17:27
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is it is very similar to Sword Art and Line in some aspects, but the each each floor of the dungeon has a different theme.
• 17:34
SPEAKER_01: So as soon as they get to the third floor of the dungeon, it becomes this giant almost like it's almost like Coruscant, but in a fantasy setting.
• 17:44
SPEAKER_01: So it's like the whole the whole overworld is like called the over city, and it's just a giant city.
• 17:49
SPEAKER_01: Um and in the in the third book, they go to the fourth floor, and that's just a a giant subway tunneling system that has like 9,000 different trains or whatever it is, different stations.
• 18:02
SPEAKER_01: They have to figure out how to like map this this uh world and like how to actually exit it.
• 18:07
  SPEAKER_01: It's really creative.
• 18:08
SPEAKER_01: Um, and where I'm at in the fifth book, it's like individual pockets of these dungeon crawlers are like placed in different quadrants of different bubbles, and they have to like defeat um certain fortresses together uh so that they can pop their bubble and move move on to the next uh next dungeon.
• 18:27
SPEAKER_01: It's it's really creative, uh the way that they're doing it.
• 18:29
  SPEAKER_02: So they're bursting bubbles.
• 18:31
SPEAKER_01: They're bursting bubbles, and it's extremely funny.
• 18:34
SPEAKER_01: At the end of book three, like there's there's a scene where I literally belly laughed.
• 18:41
SPEAKER_01: Like I was on my work, uh I was on my way to work, and I had to pause the the book that I was listening to on my drive because I was laughing so hard, dude, for like two minutes straight, just because of like you know how some th some some jokes aren't jokes to begin with, but they kind of like build on top of each other.
• 19:02
SPEAKER_01: Uh, the arrested development does this a lot, where like they they'll like introduce little little things that eventually everything kind of like collapses because of every little thing that came before.
• 19:11
SPEAKER_01: There was an there was a scene in in uh at the end of um book three of Dungeon Crawler Carl that had me like laughing out loud, just on my way to work for like two minutes straight.
• 19:23
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I it's really good.
• 19:24
  SPEAKER_01: I I I I'm surprised.
• 19:27
SPEAKER_01: Also, I'm I'm surprised how big the community is for this series.
• 19:31
SPEAKER_01: Like as soon as you like look up Dungeon Crawler Carl, you'll notice that it is just taking over like book communities, and yeah, it's it's massive.
• 19:41
  SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, no.
• 19:42
  SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's it's a massive community.
• 19:44
SPEAKER_02: Like, I I've heard of Dungeon Dungeon Crawler Carl.
• 19:49
SPEAKER_02: And um like that they have that that series that that they're working on for Peacock.
• 19:56
SPEAKER_02: I I've considered uh like jumping into it because of that.
• 19:59
SPEAKER_02: I'm like, hmm, let me check that out.
• 20:00
SPEAKER_02: Remember, remember that's what you and I did when they like first announced Game of Thrones?
• 20:05
SPEAKER_02: Like we we like started the series.
• 20:07
SPEAKER_02: Yes, yeah, so I kind of want to do the same thing.
• 20:10
SPEAKER_01: I highly recommend it to you guys.
• 20:11
  SPEAKER_01: I highly recommend it.
• 20:12
SPEAKER_01: It's if you like video games, if you like anime, and if you like laughing a lot because of ridiculous situations, it might be anime's probably the wrong I hate all of them.
• 20:28
SPEAKER_01: Anime's probably the wrong comparison because it doesn't really talk about anime at all.
• 20:32
SPEAKER_01: It's just it it has some themes that carry over from certain animes like Sword Art Online or whatever.
• 20:37
SPEAKER_00: But aren't those all like just video game themes?
• 20:40
  SPEAKER_01: Correct, yeah.
• 20:40
SPEAKER_01: So it's it's it's like a big old video game that they get forcibly stuck into because of an alien race.
• 20:47
SPEAKER_01: But anyway, let's uh let's actually talk about the topic at hand finally.
• 20:53
  SPEAKER_01: Boom.
• 20:53
SPEAKER_01: 20 22 and a half minutes into our recording.
• 20:57
SPEAKER_01: Uh Diverge Godzilla, King of the Monsters.
• 21:02
SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is a movie that came out in 2019.
• 21:04
SPEAKER_01: You kind of either love it or hate it.
• 21:06
SPEAKER_01: Or you you no, sorry.
• 21:08
SPEAKER_01: Some people dislike it, and I I understand the reasons why.
• 21:12
SPEAKER_01: The the dialogue is very kitschy.
• 21:14
SPEAKER_01: Um, it it kind of like tones down a lot of like the seriousness of everything, but it still has like really high stakes, which is um very early Monsterverse feel to it.
• 21:28
SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, for some reason, like not everyone loves this movie, but this is one of my favorites of the bunch.
• 21:34
SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna we're gonna be talking about this.
• 21:36
SPEAKER_01: Anthony, you haven't you haven't said anything about the Monsterverse.
• 21:39
SPEAKER_01: You you want to give a little recap of like your thoughts overall and then like what your thoughts are on this movie?
• 21:45
  SPEAKER_02: Okay.
• 21:45
SPEAKER_02: Um the it well, it's been a while since I've seen uh Godzilla 2014.
• 21:52
SPEAKER_02: I do remember that one being a little bit more of a that one felt like a bit more of a um a traditional like almost like the the OG Godzilla where like you know he comes out of the water and he like destroys everything you know 2014 was very similar to that and then um Skull Island obviously you know you get you get Godzilla I mean Godzilla you get uh King Kong and you know that takes place like earlier in the timeline because it was it the 60s 70s it was the Vietnam War yeah yeah so so you get a you you get a good bit of um uh of Kong in that one this this Godzilla movie uh King of Monsters reminds me of like I mean because it let's be real like if you've seen Godzilla movies you know that they get really corny real quick like they get crazy corny and but it's it's part of the charm though especially see a bunch of people rubber suits fighting each other so I mean they they they have this movie if I remember correctly right um Tahoe has a King of the Monsters or is it destroy all monsters I know they do have a destroy all monsters but I think they have a King of the Monsters also um but I mean they this was this was kind of like in like like that you know Godzilla's throwing down on a bunch of monsters that that's what you know it's like they they did destroy all monsters in this storyline um they they had the human side of it I think that the the the reason why um I'm a little like I mean the the monster verse is is I mean it's fun I I I I always have a good time watching them um the reason why like I talk up Godzilla minus one so much is because they do really good on the Godzilla part and really good on the human part but like in the monster verse you I you get either or you know you don't get good either or except for maybe 2014's kind of solid right but I mean it's fun like I this this movie like you if you like giant monsters fighting each other like you won't be disappointed in and watching it if you want something in depth then you're you're coming to the wrong movie unless like you all you you all unless you're like really more about like lore like Dakota.
• 24:28
SPEAKER_02: Dakota's the the lore guy so I know as long as you get lore you're good.
• 24:33
SPEAKER_00: Do you feel like there was a good amount of lore in this Dakota?
• 24:36
SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah yeah there was actually plenty of lore that you can dissect from this movie.
• 24:41
SPEAKER_02: So we we get the introduction of like this fro well the the first monster you actually see is uh Mothra and you find out that she has like this like cave in China that she's been worshipped in for eons who knows um you you learn about this subterranean uh world that worshipped Godzilla like somewhere in mid-film um and it like predates the Romans and the Greeks even the Babylonians so that's that's awesome um we I would love to learn more about that uh but then you have like Monster Zero or uh Ghidorah that we find out later isn't actually even from this ecosystem isn't from this world it's actually like a visitor from another world that has uh basically taken over and was enthroned in ice space dragon so yeah king king ghidora is actually like one of my like favorite OG um Godzilla villains I don't know just like the I always like I always pictured or I always thought of uh King Ghidorah being like the main villain to Godzilla that's fair yeah to me I love King Ghidorah because when Dakota and I used to do YouTube videos I think what were we doing like a trailer reaction to this movie actually?
• 26:00
SPEAKER_01: Yeah we were doing a trailer reaction to King of the Monsters and they showed King Ghidorah for the first time and I go I I said King Dora because it's King Ghidorah but they don't actually say King in in this one they you just have Charles Dance saying Long live the King but in the in the old films it was King Ghidorah and then I heard Kinky Dora and I was like do they name that guy Kinky Dora and I And now every time I see him I just think of Kinky Dora.
• 26:28
SPEAKER_01: If you go back into that trailer reaction um you will find uh like I I put like a like a whenever when she said kinky Dora I put like a little um like PNG of like the the Dora character like the the swiper no swiping character um in a cat suit and it's Kinky Dora.
• 26:51
SPEAKER_02: That was early geek critique.
• 26:54
SPEAKER_02: That was like right right after like you went from your blog phase to the YouTube phase.
• 26:59
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah I think that was 2018.
• 27:01
SPEAKER_01: Yeah that was it was really early but um it was it was a good time.
• 27:04
SPEAKER_00: So this movie's a bit nostalgic for me for those reasons.
• 27:07
SPEAKER_01: Yeah but but yeah there's there's plenty of lore in this one I can keep going but um I really liked the idea that there was just a bunch of like unnamed monsters that they just made for this movie that populate the earth and have just kind of been in hibernation um while the humans have like kind of taken over the the world basically and learning that they were like once just everywhere and I think that's uh that's a really really cool thing that they just threw into the mix and now we have I think King of the monsters does so much for the the monster versus lore as a whole because now we kind of have a reason for there to be just a King Kong on this one island.
• 27:53
SPEAKER_01: We have a reason for Godzilla to have been like the balance of nature in the first movie.
• 27:58
SPEAKER_01: And I think uh it just kind of opens the doors to so many possible stories that they can take it from here.
• 28:05
SPEAKER_02: Yeah and and and you get that um you know you you get that that allegiance of uh Godzilla and Mothra even though like back in back in the day Godzilla and Mothra were like enemies but then they eventually like became friends or just like not really friends but like unlikely allies.
• 28:23
SPEAKER_01: Yeah so Rich uh we're we're referring to like the the corny movies from the 50s 60s and 70s um where Godzilla would randomly you know have uh periods of like attacking certain creatures or like befriending certain creatures um I think the second ever Godzilla movie was actually uh Godzilla versus Kong so uh they they didn't have the rights to call him King Kong because that was uh that was a Hollywood creation so it was just a giant monkey um and that's why they don't call him King Kong in uh in these movies either just just as a reference but um he would you know like these these different monster groups were kind of like side a lot off like it was almost like civil war where like these guys would go on this side and these guys would go on this side and wait I understand something so Kong in this monster verse is not King Kong but he's just technically no yeah they get away with not getting sued on that because that is I mean I'm sure that they could pay for the the rights to the name but um I I think it's just uh it's more of a reference to the old Japanese films okay where it was just Kong you know it was obviously King Kong I feel I I feel like there there's probably what like a a copyright on the King Kong name but like just Kong is okay because like you know you also have like Donkey Kong so I guess just Kong is okay.
• 29:56
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 29:57
SPEAKER_00: Does Kong mean like gorilla or something in Japanese?
• 30:01
SPEAKER_02: Is why are there so many Well I mean it was an English movie to begin with or English book actually to begin with so I don't actually know uh it's so weird because like I can't think of anything but a massive gorilla when I hear Kong and it's and it's because of these movies.
• 30:17
SPEAKER_03: I think of the dog toys actually I was in a beer pong team that dog thing you know the comedy how was that the first thing you think of I don't know it's just like the like I have a dog I don't know I was uh uh I looked it up it it doesn't mean anything it's just it's just become synonymous with just monkey I was uh uh once on a beer pong team called King Pong and we uh we had clever cleverly designed shirts with the uh with King Kong holding uh the the team name you said it was a team so did you guys have tryouts?
• 30:50
SPEAKER_02: Uh no but I did get uh we did we did get button down shirts and we almost uh we made it to the semifinals uh in the local qualifier before the World Series of beer punk so oh oh oh yeah how often did you brag about that at parties afterwards I still have the shirt so I'll put it that way to my closet for the Pong tournament it was a beer punk tournament oh yeah yeah yeah I know beer punk sorry yeah oh no that's that's even better um um so so we were talking a little bit earlier off the the podcast so so we all Dakota Jen and I we always like change our backgrounds on on uh zoom Rich always has uh Battlestar Galactica in the background um no I'm just kidding it's it's Star Wars but uh I have the old 1978 Godzilla cartoon and I caught that like as a kid it was reruns I think it was um it was uh during that like Hannah Barbera block that they would always like play and it was always wild to me because like you know because I being a kid I remember seeing Godzilla just you know going and destroying whatever but in this cartoon they actually had like a the humans had like kind of a an allegiance with Godzilla and they would like press this button that would signal Godzilla to like fight these giant monsters that would like come out of nowhere.
• 32:22
SPEAKER_02: And like I I always I will never forget this cartoon.
• 32:26
SPEAKER_02: I'll always remember like the the the button and like Godzilla coming out of the water and fighting the monster.
• 32:32
  SPEAKER_02: It's it's so wild I can't believe that um I can't believe Dakota hasn't seen it.
• 32:38
SPEAKER_00: Like that that that's it doesn't like even look slightly familiar to me.
• 32:42
SPEAKER_00: Like usually from like stuff I haven't seen I'll be like oh I kind of remember that.
• 32:45
SPEAKER_02: I remember and I I vividly remember that they made a cartoon in 19 or no it was a cartoon ad in 1999 where they would call Godzilla to fight the Y2K bug.
• 33:00
SPEAKER_02: I do I remember that like I vividly remember that like if you look at that was that was that the 1999 or 1998 Godzilla that they did that too no no no no it was 19 no this one it was this one it was 199 they made a they made like an ad with this Godzilla and they would it was the whole thing where they would press the button they would call Godzilla and Godzilla would fight the the Y2K bug so so it would be 1999 because of Y2K like everybody was freaking out about the the Y2K that the computer systems would go down.
• 33:33
SPEAKER_03: I know the Matthew Broderick um flop movie uh Godzilla 1998 that had a cartoon too that also had a cartoon that lasted uh I think a season but I don't think it really went anywhere um but anyway but uh Godzilla has a a long and storied history but yeah so so Rich tell us tell us about your experience with um Godzilla King of the monsters which of the monsters I mean outside of Godzilla did you like the most which one did you think was the coolest like you have Rodan which is like the flying one King Ghidorah um the three headed space dragon uh Mothra the giant moth well okay so a couple of things that I don't think I I processed because I was watching so much so fast right was um like the fact that all these peoples have been worshipping like some of these mo uh mutos right and like they've just kept it a secret like like there's been so many of them it it's just absurd like I will there would there got there was a point where I was like wait a minute how many of these things it's like if we found out in Marvel that there were 17 celestials like all over the planet it's like whoa there's a lot I didn't know that uh kinky Dora boots uh swiper uh was not from this planet I don't know how I missed that how so how did how did King Gidora if he's not from the planet how how was he where was he brought from I actually don't I I don't remember that being brought up in the movie either I think I missed that.
• 35:10
SPEAKER_02: I just remember it because of the old the OG.
• 35:13
SPEAKER_01: Oh okay all right but but I think they did touch it they do yeah they do touch on it um one of the sorry my my dog is going crazy um all right I'll say this and I'll take her out basically they when when they're going over like the myths and legends like the I think uh I think her name is Vivian Chen or something they she like kind of like swipes her hand over a table and like a bunch of images from like the past comes up showing us about Monster Zero.
• 35:48
SPEAKER_01: Basically Sarazawa basic he the the guy from Godzilla Sarazawa um the the Japanese guy he goes something along the lines of like well what if he isn't from this uh ecosystem you know like what if you know like what if he isn't native here because it doesn't fit the it doesn't fit the balance that the planet already has so that's that's where I got that from I'm gonna go take my dog out but you guys can keep talking.
• 36:16
SPEAKER_03: You know what I really didn't like about this movie dates.
• 36:19
SPEAKER_03: I thought the dates really uh just ruined everything for me.
• 36:23
SPEAKER_03: I was like why do I need to know the date of anything I'm coming I'm coming though.
• 36:30
  SPEAKER_01: There are no dates.
• 36:32
SPEAKER_03: There are no well there is they they they do date uh Godzilla 2014 they date the the bat the the battle at San Francisco in the first one G Day but didn't you already have that date um they don't no they don't really actually explain it in the first movie um so this one quantifies it as May 16th gotcha thank you yeah thanks for Clarity for this movie but you had you had Dakota running back yeah I know no I know I didn't I did that on the purpose I I like you know what I really thought was kind of cool so I had no idea of the relationships of any of them you know uh when like it kind of was revealed that Mothra's there to like help out uh Godzilla and like heal him or whatever I was like whoa that's pretty cool like I I really I really like that part of it uh I thought okay this is gonna sound ridiculous and whatever but I do this all the time there was something about the mom I can't remember the act the the character's name but like the the lady who turns bad but then like kind of you know Emma Russell Emma Russell Emma Russell just popped his head in to say that so Emma Russell uh I was like something was disquieting about her from the very beginning I didn't trust her I I don't I couldn't figure out what it was I was just like have you seen the departed no uh I actually just remember that so you know what it was I figured it out she plays Livia Soprano in like the many scenes oh you're right all right so it was funny because I couldn't remember I couldn't like I you know before she it's revealed that she's like you know being crazy I was like man her daughter just seems to be like I why like what's with this lady like I I was like something's up with this lady I think the daughter's right you know and I'm like something's up with her and it wasn't good storytelling it really was just that I despise like I just like associated her with Livia and it was just so many bad feelings but then I was like yes reward for typecasting characters on uh roles they've previously played so I can't believe that you're saying this and it's not the departed that you're referring to that's insane because I was watching this with Dakota and I'm like this is like parallel universe the departed so instead of like playing I mean I don't want to say too much because you haven't that's insane that you haven't seen the departed first of all um but it's it also takes place in Boston and she also plays like a complex role and um yeah it's like she's like a therapist in the departed but here she's like a therapist with like with like vibrations for the for the monsters she's like a monster therapist with vibrations and I was like oh look at that it's just like Parallel Universe departed I did like seeing um Mr Lannister Tywin uh big bad Tywin's just so evil he's so wonderful he's so good at being look see he he was and he he was typecasted they they made him evil in in this one too and guess what I believed it right away he shows up and I went oh there goes there's the evil guy he's gonna be evil right it was easy what would you do if he was the main good guy aside from Godzilla they honestly should just cast him as a good guy that would be because you would just be waiting for him to be evil the whole time and then he's just good we did we did get him as a as a good guy in um alien cube oh but that was before games game of thrones so like we're you know it's just like for me it's like your biggest role like you know Hans Gruber I mean sorry sorry Snape but when when you know uh that's why the Snape turn I think it was genius because they were like hey we're gonna take the bad guy from Die Hard and we're gonna put him in this Harry Potter series and everyone's gonna think he's the bad guy and then whoop nope he's the good guy big surprise that's why everyone was shocked when Snape was actually on Harry's side.
• 40:34
  SPEAKER_00: Well I don't think that's why because I hadn't seen Diehard before I saw Harry Potter.
• 40:40
  SPEAKER_00: What do you mean?
• 40:41
SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't I'm sorry I don't know what to do a lot of people saw Harry Potter before Die Hard I think yeah but Die Hard's a classic well I mean I I mean ri Rich Rich to be fair you hadn't seen any of the Godzilla movies and that those are like you haven't seen the freaking departed like you need to you can't you need to like calm down for somebody who's talking big games right now you haven't seen like both the alien movies either outside and then like what once we actually like did the series he was like dang like I mean wouldn't you say that you you like kind of missed out like but like you finally joined the fold Rich will be like oh my god you haven't seen this like super or movie from this time and I'm like he hasn't seen something like the Wizard of Oz like I've seen both Bad News Bears and the longest yard guys alright so I watch a lot I watch a lot listen have you seen the Wizard of Oz Rich?
• 41:35
SPEAKER_03: Yes I have it gave me nightmares when I was a little kid I hated it uh really it has to be on TBS if it if it's on TBS I've seen it a lot.
• 41:43
SPEAKER_03: So con Air 17 times guys but all right but uh you know but back to the uh to this movie I I really you know I thought I don't know like Anthony said earlier about like how sometimes it's the the people or the the get the monsters right I I actually thought it was really I I I don't have a problem with it at all I don't think I think my biggest problem as I'll just kind of from the first one is is just the darkness factor.
• 42:14
SPEAKER_03: I I just you know like there was like a couple of scenes where Godzilla was fighting like a monster in the middle of like more daylight I would say and I was very excited for those scenes and I will say that there was a part of me that was scared that Godzilla like irrationally I thought that uh Kinky Dora like when his head grew back that one time I was like oh oh boy what's Godzilla gonna do now you know like I don't know if he's gonna be able to beat him that guy regenerates and we hadn't seen that regeneration in any of the other creatures so I thought that was problematic.
• 42:50
SPEAKER_03: And I did like the idea that like he basically needed like you know a recharge like a nuclear blast to kind of get him going again you know like yeah just one drop of poison get me going.
• 43:02
SPEAKER_03: You know like just like he he's like Popeye but I I I I don't know like it and and then like just the irrationalness of like Monarch also being like nah man we gotta trust this dude.
• 43:15
SPEAKER_03: Right like so much of it's so absurd but like I love it.
• 43:18
SPEAKER_03: Like I'm here like what's weird is like maybe in another I don't know I feel like this would like in another world I would kind of strongly attack this movie for its maybe plot holes or its ridiculousness but I'm like gimme more like I I want it more ridiculous.
• 43:38
  SPEAKER_03: Like I love it.
• 43:40
  SPEAKER_03: It's it's great.
• 43:42
SPEAKER_03: You um I have a question for you.
• 43:44
SPEAKER_01: Oh okay you know no go ask go did you did you ever watch Monarch season one?
• 43:49
  SPEAKER_02: Me?
• 43:49
SPEAKER_01: No Anthony did did Anthony ever watched oh yeah yeah yeah I saw with uh what's your boy Kurt what I will say about uh the first season of the Apple TV series Monarch Monarch Legacy of Monsters is that uh the the biggest problem people have is that the human storylines aren't interesting, and I think that's fixed with Monarch Legacy of Monsters because they actually give the story and the characters time to breathe alongside the monsters in the story.
• 44:17
SPEAKER_01: So um that kind of gets fixed, at least with with that that series.
• 44:22
SPEAKER_01: But like the the films kind of still have that issue where like the the humans, even though we're following them, are um written second to like like they're they're the secondary characters.
• 44:34
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because the mom's like whole plan just doesn't really make any sense.
• 44:38
SPEAKER_00: Like so your son died, and you're gonna kill everybody's sons?
• 44:44
SPEAKER_00: Like, is that and then you know she's like everywhere they go, you know, nature comes back, and it's like I guess I mean you could just try other ways to like remote environmental.
• 44:56
SPEAKER_00: Like, I guess there's some trees in the abandoned cities now.
• 45:00
SPEAKER_00: Like, why don't you just like join plant a tree?
• 45:03
SPEAKER_00: Like, like you you could you could just start an organization to plant more trees, like you don't need to.
• 45:07
SPEAKER_00: I I just feel like this is the most counterintuitive way to achieve her goals, really.
• 45:12
SPEAKER_00: Uh there was some baseball lore in this movie.
• 45:16
SPEAKER_01: Um Rich, what did you think of the uh the green monster destroying the green monster?
• 45:22
SPEAKER_03: I absolutely love when movies use baseball stadium.
• 45:31
SPEAKER_03: And it's not just because I like baseball.
• 45:34
SPEAKER_03: It's not just because I like baseball, but it is, right?
• 45:36
SPEAKER_03: But oh it's be you know, I spend a lot of time playing the video games, right?
• 45:40
SPEAKER_03: So like all jokes aside, like I haven't been to every stadium, but like if you take away like you know the name of the team from the stadium and you just show me a picture of the the field, you know, like I know what stadium that is, right?
• 45:54
SPEAKER_03: So uh one of my very favorite things in Fallout, like the coolest thing was getting to like the capital city and it ended in Fallout 4, and it ends up being freaking Fenway Park, right?
• 46:08
SPEAKER_03: So I you know, as I'm watching this, I'm like, wait a minute.
• 46:12
SPEAKER_03: And then they you know, the the way they use the speaker system to draw one of the mutos.
• 46:18
SPEAKER_03: I thought it was like super cool.
• 46:19
  SPEAKER_03: Uh Charlie's really excited.
• 46:21
SPEAKER_03: He he wants to watch this one because he's watching like everything that L uh that not L that Millie Bobby Brown is in.
• 46:28
SPEAKER_03: Uh he's apparently having a watch party for Noah Holmes 3 with his friend uh in a couple weeks.
• 46:33
  SPEAKER_03: That's really cute.
• 46:35
SPEAKER_02: He's actually that that that sounds like he he has a celebrity crush.
• 46:38
  SPEAKER_03: I think so.
• 46:39
SPEAKER_03: So he's uh he he uh like he watched the first one because I told him, hey, uh, you know, uh you know, she's in in this one, so he's he's gonna be excited to see that.
• 46:50
SPEAKER_01: And uh she's also she's also in Godzilla vs.
• 46:53
SPEAKER_01: Kong, so she carries over into the next one.
• 46:56
SPEAKER_03: Oh, he's gonna be so excited.
• 46:57
SPEAKER_03: All right, so I told him that he didn't have to watch Kong so that he could get to Millie Bobby Brown as fast as possible, but maybe I'll make him backtrack after he gets to see it.
• 47:06
SPEAKER_03: So uh that no, that'd be I I and I you know I loved it in um what was it Days of Future Past when they used RFK Stadium down in in Washington DC.
• 47:17
SPEAKER_03: You know, like they're they're recognizable landmarks for me, you know.
• 47:21
SPEAKER_03: I mean, I also liked it when Magneto destroyed the uh Golden Gate Bridge, but baseball stadiums have a special place.
• 47:27
SPEAKER_01: Uh Superman returns when Superman uh like stops the plane and and lands it onto the stadium.
• 47:33
  SPEAKER_01: Love that scene.
• 47:34
SPEAKER_03: Or, you know, of course, in Men in Black, when the spaceship takes off and it affects the Mets game, and the Mets player, the fly ball just hits his head in the outfield because he's distracted by the spaceship taking off.
• 47:47
SPEAKER_03: Because of course, even in movies, the Mets have to lose.
• 47:50
  SPEAKER_01: So sad.
• 47:52
SPEAKER_01: Um, well, what I liked about this particular baseball reference was um Godzilla, who is these days like a more like grayish muddy brown color, traditionally um um occasionally had green skin or like green scales.
• 48:09
SPEAKER_01: Like the the the animated series that Anthony has behind him, he's very green, he's a green monster.
• 48:15
SPEAKER_01: Um and Fenway Park is known for having a giant green wall that is being that is dubbed the green monster.
• 48:22
SPEAKER_01: So it's it's a very fun nod that the green monster destroys the green monster, um, which I I really appreciate.
• 48:31
SPEAKER_02: Wait, by the way, Rich is only happy because they did they destroyed uh Fenway Park because he's jealous that they have One Piece night.
• 48:38
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, yes.
• 48:40
SPEAKER_03: Also, it's really sad when you realize that your friend set you up to like be the knowledge base uh on a certain kernel of the movie, and then you completely failed because you fanboyed so much about baseball stadiums.
• 48:52
SPEAKER_03: So thank you, Dakota, for picking up my Slack and then informing the audience of the connection between the green monster and the green monster that you literally set me up for.
• 49:01
  SPEAKER_01: That's okay.
• 49:02
  SPEAKER_01: No, that's all right.
• 49:03
SPEAKER_01: Um you you you nerd it out, and we we understand your love for baseball, and it came out um in the audio.
• 49:11
SPEAKER_01: I think everyone understands that now.
• 49:13
SPEAKER_01: Um don't worry, this this doesn't look this doesn't work against you in any way.
• 49:19
SPEAKER_01: It doesn't make you look poor or anything.
• 49:20
SPEAKER_00: Um it makes him look poor.
• 49:22
SPEAKER_01: It makes him look poor in his knowledge base.
• 49:24
  SPEAKER_01: No, I'm just kidding.
• 49:25
SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, so I I do have an issue with I was outside with a dog, but I heard you guys on my headphones.
• 49:32
SPEAKER_01: I I have an issue with uh Emma Russell's plan as well.
• 49:35
SPEAKER_01: The the whole um I'm gonna join up with this eco-terrorist named Jonah who wants to destroy the entire world basically, slowly by uh by waking up Titan after Titan so that they can bring the world back to balance.
• 49:53
SPEAKER_01: It's it literally makes no sense.
• 49:54
SPEAKER_00: Like it's kind of like Daenerys Targaryen.
• 49:58
SPEAKER_00: Like, you kill my handmaid, and now I'm gonna burn down the entire city.
• 50:02
SPEAKER_01: It's kind of like a Thanos type type logic, you know, like yeah, it'll work out in the end, but right now it's gonna really suck, guys.
• 50:10
SPEAKER_00: Um like you're gonna potentially kill your daughter because your son died?
• 50:14
SPEAKER_00: Okay, no, no, no, she's gonna be safe.
• 50:15
  SPEAKER_00: Trust me.
• 50:16
SPEAKER_02: Well, you know, at least with Thanos, he was keeping half the people alive.
• 50:20
SPEAKER_02: This was gonna probably kill most people.
• 50:23
  SPEAKER_01: Destroy most people.
• 50:26
SPEAKER_00: I think it also like it like for Thanos, he doesn't really have I don't know, anybody that he really loves that much.
• 50:33
  SPEAKER_00: Gamora.
• 50:34
SPEAKER_00: Gamora, but like she'll be fine.
• 50:36
SPEAKER_00: We all know Gomorra's a survivor, but like this chick has like a like a young daughter, like she's and then you know when her daughter almost dies, she's like shocked and like you know, like crying and stuff.
• 50:46
SPEAKER_00: It's like you did this, girl.
• 50:48
SPEAKER_00: Like, this was all you.
• 50:50
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's very much a Obi-Wan to Anakin moment.
• 50:53
SPEAKER_01: You have done this yourself.
• 50:55
SPEAKER_01: Um but Mark Russell, the Maddie's father, also continues into the next movie, Godzilla vs.
• 51:04
  SPEAKER_01: Kong.
• 51:05
SPEAKER_01: And um we don't really get too much about the character in this movie.
• 51:11
SPEAKER_01: Well, he has a drinking problem.
• 51:13
SPEAKER_01: He had a drinking problem.
• 51:14
  SPEAKER_01: He's he's he's better now, he's doing better.
• 51:16
SPEAKER_00: He hates that his kids saw him that way.
• 51:18
SPEAKER_01: After Andrew died during G-Day in San Francisco, they he he spiraled, okay, Jen?
• 51:24
SPEAKER_01: He he had a bad time.
• 51:26
SPEAKER_01: Everybody just seemed so fake to me.
• 51:29
SPEAKER_01: Like he broke up with his wife because he was drinking just too damn much.
• 51:34
SPEAKER_01: Um, and you know, in in the interim, he's just been emailing Maddie pictures of wolves that he's been taking pictures of.
• 51:41
SPEAKER_01: He was working for Monarch previously alongside Emma Russell, but kind of quit, I guess, uh because of Godzilla.
• 51:48
  SPEAKER_01: And now he's back.
• 51:50
SPEAKER_01: You know, they they bring him back into the fold.
• 51:52
SPEAKER_01: I I love I love how movies go ahead if I had a drinking problem.
• 51:56
SPEAKER_03: I think that moving away from all humanity and just taking a pair of wolves, like taking pictures of wolves, would definitely make it better, right?
• 52:02
SPEAKER_03: Like right, like it would fill my hours, you know.
• 52:05
SPEAKER_00: I I guess what's hilarious to me is that Dakota's dad is currently in Patagonia taking pictures of Pumas and he keeps sending us pictures of Pumas.
• 52:14
SPEAKER_00: My dad is not an alcoholic though, so there's no difference.
• 52:17
SPEAKER_03: Tell your dad to step up and if he was an alcoholic, this would fix him.
• 52:20
SPEAKER_01: This would fix him, yeah.
• 52:22
SPEAKER_01: No, actually, my dad's a my dad's like doing like a work thing where he's like um he's he's the tour guide?
• 52:29
SPEAKER_01: He's like no, he's not a tour guide, but he's like the camera guide.
• 52:32
SPEAKER_01: So he he's it's like a comp he works for Nikon cameras, and um they they send a bunch of uh basically rich people over to like different places and they they want them to get accustomed with the cameras, and he's the knowledgeable camera guy, so he's helping them out with photography.
• 52:50
SPEAKER_00: So it's imagine you like travel across the world to take pictures of pumas and then you don't know how to use your camera.
• 52:56
SPEAKER_00: So you've got a guy there that knows how to use your camera better.
• 53:00
SPEAKER_01: He's Mark Russell, except without the boom, without the alcohol, and he doesn't have any daughters.
• 53:07
SPEAKER_01: But I mean, I'd like to think of myself in a way.
• 53:10
  SPEAKER_00: Nope.
• 53:12
  SPEAKER_01: So anyway.
• 53:17
SPEAKER_01: Um what are we talking about?
• 53:20
  SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry, I derailed us.
• 53:22
SPEAKER_00: I just think the characters in this movie are like hilarious.
• 53:25
SPEAKER_01: They are like they're character, they are caricatures.
• 53:28
SPEAKER_01: Um I do think that there's a couple scenes in this movie that are really stunning.
• 53:33
SPEAKER_01: Um in terms of like how they like when Mothra first comes out of the cave and she like opens up her wings, it's such a really it's such a beautiful shot.
• 53:40
SPEAKER_00: Mothra is my favorite character in this movie.
• 53:43
SPEAKER_00: She's loyal, she stands by her man, and she sacrifices herself for the betterment of everybody.
• 53:51
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 53:51
SPEAKER_00: She's the real hero, I would say.
• 53:54
SPEAKER_02: Dakota, remember in the Godzilla games, like Mothra would always be like the the like reinforcements to come in and help you?
• 54:01
  SPEAKER_01: Yes.
• 54:02
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Mothra's a Mothra's a real one.
• 54:04
SPEAKER_01: Um just a neutral party.
• 54:06
SPEAKER_01: She's the the healer on the battlefield.
• 54:09
SPEAKER_02: I think she's like the one that generally like wants to I think Mothra is actually the one that's looking out for Earth.
• 54:16
  SPEAKER_00: Yes, I I I would agree with that.
• 54:18
SPEAKER_00: Are there like parallels between the broken relationship of that couple, Emma and whatever her non-alcoholic husband, and then Godzilla, because he kind of has a radiation problem.
• 54:31
SPEAKER_00: You know, and then Mothra comes in and saves sacrifices.
• 54:35
  SPEAKER_01: No, that's not a parallel.
• 54:36
SPEAKER_01: You're just you're just connecting, you're just seeing patterns where there isn't she sees alcohol radiation.
• 54:45
SPEAKER_00: They both have substance addiction, and then they have a wife who's powerful.
• 54:52
SPEAKER_03: Like my wife just touches my arm and I'm not drunk anymore.
• 54:54
SPEAKER_03: Is that is that what happens?
• 54:56
SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm gonna try to pretty much actually see what happens at the baseball game.
• 54:58
SPEAKER_00: No, I think she like made him super drunk and then he like it's kind of like when you have a few beards and you're extra good at beer pong.
• 55:05
  SPEAKER_03: Yes.
• 55:06
SPEAKER_00: That's kind of what happened to Godzilla.
• 55:08
SPEAKER_03: That's how I almost made it to the finals.
• 55:10
  SPEAKER_00: Dakota's getting so irritating.
• 55:13
  SPEAKER_01: It's actually a really funny podcast, so I'm I'm I'm appreciating your presence.
• 55:17
SPEAKER_01: But I do want to talk a little bit about this movie and the monsters that they're in.
• 55:21
SPEAKER_03: Um so it's the most polite smack back I've ever heard.
• 55:28
SPEAKER_01: Um there's actually a lot of like cool little bits of like history that they sprinkle into these movies, including uh, but not limited to Godzilla's uh voice and the noise that he makes when he like charges up.
• 55:44
SPEAKER_01: Like those go back to the 50s and 60s.
• 55:47
SPEAKER_01: Like those those like screeches and and growls that he makes are um it's it's still the same exact, maybe not the same exact, but it's it's very similar to the noises that they would make back in the day.
• 56:01
SPEAKER_01: And even Mothra's like screech is the is like almost identical to the original Mothra's screeches back in the the all Toho films.
• 56:11
SPEAKER_01: So I love I love little things like that, you know?
• 56:15
SPEAKER_01: Um those are iconic sounds.
• 56:19
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 56:19
SPEAKER_01: In Doctor Who, like when the TARDIS materializes or dematerializes, it's the same exact noise as in the very first episode in 1963.
• 56:27
SPEAKER_01: So it's like certain things are so good and they shouldn't be changed, and I think that that is one of the the cool things about the Godzilla franchise.
• 56:37
SPEAKER_01: Also, the Godzilla theme is really memorable.
• 56:41
  SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, it's fantastic.
• 56:43
SPEAKER_00: Um It was kind of like Jazzing or Cat up, actually.
• 56:46
SPEAKER_00: Like we had the theme going for a bit, and he, you know, I feel like he's got a lot of Godzilla's Godzilla's kind of like a big cat when you think about it.
• 56:54
SPEAKER_01: That's such a weird way to like describe it.
• 56:56
  SPEAKER_01: Jazzing our cat up.
• 56:58
SPEAKER_02: Um I think was it um isn't go Gojira like a combination of like gorilla and whale or something like that?
• 57:06
SPEAKER_01: Oh, I actually don't know um what the the actual combination of noises that that that creates.
• 57:13
SPEAKER_02: No, no, the the actual name Go Gojira, which like that that's like God Godzilla's like actual name Gojira.
• 57:22
SPEAKER_00: I did appreciate that how like the only person calling him that was the Japanese guy, and everybody else was calling him Godzilla, but then like we had the subtitles on, and when the Japanese guy said it, it said Gojira.
• 57:34
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 57:35
SPEAKER_01: They don't really ever explain that.
• 57:37
SPEAKER_01: Um even in like the nine 1999 Matthew Broderick film, um, there's like a random Japanese guy in like a boat that like is attacked by Godzilla, and he he knowingly calls it Gojita.
• 57:50
SPEAKER_01: But like we don't know why he knows that.
• 57:53
SPEAKER_01: Um anyway, another thing, Rich, that might interest you is that Godzilla as a concept was a metaphor for the atomic bomb that the atomic bombs plural that fell in Japan.
• 58:10
  SPEAKER_01: Um he waited.
• 58:13
  SPEAKER_03: So his destruction.
• 58:14
SPEAKER_03: So like he was created by the same thing that created the dirty, nasty bearded men.
• 58:21
SPEAKER_01: Yes, you could actually say that.
• 58:22
SPEAKER_02: You actually could say the dirty bearded men.
• 58:27
SPEAKER_02: Um actually, what was it?
• 58:29
SPEAKER_02: The the first one, 1954.
• 58:31
SPEAKER_02: The first Godzilla was 1954.
• 58:33
SPEAKER_02: That's literally right after um World War II.
• 58:37
SPEAKER_01: Like, I mean Yeah, like just nine years, yeah.
• 58:40
  SPEAKER_02: I mean, dude, that's that's crazy.
• 58:42
SPEAKER_02: So the and you actually get that, you see the influence of that in that movie.
• 58:47
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 58:48
  SPEAKER_01: Um it's it's really well done.
• 58:50
SPEAKER_01: Even even more well done in uh the more recent Godzilla Jap the Japanese Godzilla film Godzilla minus one, where it's almost like a remake of the original 1954 film, um, with a bigger emphasis on the human characters and uh a bigger emphasis on the destructive uh forces that man has unleashed, basically.
• 59:16
SPEAKER_01: And that's that's kind of always been like the um the crux of what Godzilla is, you know?
• 59:23
SPEAKER_01: So when it comes to like Sarazawa uh detonating a loop uh a nuke right next to Godzilla, that that is a reference to the nuclear energy that kind of birthed the character in film history, you know?
• 59:41
SPEAKER_00: So I did really like that scene where he sacrificed himself.
• 59:45
SPEAKER_00: Tell me a little bit about that.
• 59:47
  SPEAKER_00: He sacrificed himself.
• 59:49
SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know, it's it was nice because he like marveled at Godzilla.
• 59:54
SPEAKER_00: Like he didn't he call him a friend at one point.
• 59:56
SPEAKER_00: Yes, like he like considers him his friend, and he's like he he he knows Godzilla's got a bad reputation, um, but he considers him his friend and he sacrificed himself to get you know his friend more of the substance that he loves, radiation.
• 1:00:11
SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like my cat, like where he has my cat has a bad reputation.
• 1:00:15
SPEAKER_00: He's a little bit violent, he's done a few things that a lot of people in the family disrespect.
• 1:00:20
SPEAKER_00: Um they don't trust him, but I I've I've always stood by him and viewed him as my friend.
• 1:00:26
SPEAKER_03: Did he ever uh claw your face?
• 1:00:28
SPEAKER_00: He clawed Dakota's hands and sent Dakota to urgent care because he got cat scratch fever.
• 1:00:33
SPEAKER_00: I kind of am on his side with that one.
• 1:00:36
  SPEAKER_00: Dakota had that coming.
• 1:00:38
SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like going up to Godzilla and just like trying to push him around.
• 1:00:42
SPEAKER_00: Like, you don't do that.
• 1:00:43
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guess not.
• 1:00:45
  SPEAKER_01: Um yeah.
• 1:00:46
SPEAKER_02: Did you detonate uh a nuke next to him?
• 1:00:49
SPEAKER_01: No, I just poured water on him.
• 1:00:51
SPEAKER_01: Dakota got really they had a heated argument.
• 1:00:54
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we I I had an argument with him after he had done that to me.
• 1:00:58
SPEAKER_01: Um I put him in the I put him in the bath.
• 1:01:03
SPEAKER_00: And then and then promptly we took Dakota to urgent care because he started getting a fever.
• 1:01:08
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was really bad.
• 1:01:10
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 1:01:10
SPEAKER_01: Um anyway, Godzilla is very cat-like.
• 1:01:15
SPEAKER_01: And maybe that's why people like him.
• 1:01:17
SPEAKER_00: Um I think if you're a cat person, you like Godzilla.
• 1:01:20
SPEAKER_00: If you're a dog person, you like King Kong.
• 1:01:22
  SPEAKER_03: Huh.
• 1:01:23
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 1:01:24
SPEAKER_03: Maybe that explains why I like Kong so much more.
• 1:01:26
SPEAKER_01: Uh it'll be interesting actually seeing how you uh appreciate one versus the other, like who you're gonna be rooting for.
• 1:01:36
SPEAKER_03: Oh, I could tell you right now, 100%, it's Kong.
• 1:01:39
SPEAKER_01: Okay, so there you go.
• 1:01:40
SPEAKER_00: Rich talked about King Kong like all week.
• 1:01:43
  SPEAKER_00: He wouldn't stop.
• 1:01:44
SPEAKER_00: He was just it's actually it made me uncomfortable.
• 1:01:47
SPEAKER_03: I could spend so much time on like I want to know more about the ecosystem of Skull Island.
• 1:01:52
SPEAKER_03: It's like Predator Badlands level of like, you know, the the world is crazy, you know, the land is crazy, and you gotta survive it.
• 1:02:01
SPEAKER_03: And like, man, by the end of that Kong movie, like he's just a shit.
• 1:02:04
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but you hated that part of Predator Badlands.
• 1:02:08
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know.
• 1:02:09
  SPEAKER_03: It's weird.
• 1:02:10
  SPEAKER_03: I love Kong.
• 1:02:11
SPEAKER_03: I love you know what it maybe it's just because Kong, like he showed up.
• 1:02:14
SPEAKER_03: He showed up for me right away.
• 1:02:15
SPEAKER_03: Start the movie, boom, see his hands.
• 1:02:17
  SPEAKER_03: Love him.
• 1:02:18
  SPEAKER_03: Great guy.
• 1:02:19
SPEAKER_03: Thanks for thanks for being there for me, Kong.
• 1:02:21
  SPEAKER_03: I appreciate it.
• 1:02:22
SPEAKER_01: He's the dad who stepped up.
• 1:02:23
SPEAKER_03: He set he's he sets traps, you know.
• 1:02:26
  SPEAKER_03: Like, love that.
• 1:02:27
SPEAKER_03: Love that smart guy, you know.
• 1:02:28
SPEAKER_00: Uh just if you have daddy issues, you'd like Kong better.
• 1:02:33
  SPEAKER_01: There's there's an anime.
• 1:02:34
SPEAKER_00: If you had a stable home, you like Godzilla.
• 1:02:39
  SPEAKER_01: There's there's a Netflix made a uh Kong um anime.
• 1:02:48
  SPEAKER_01: Really?
• 1:02:51
SPEAKER_01: It's like a one-season thing, um, where it takes place I think in the 90s.
• 1:02:56
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it takes place in the 90s, and it's just uh it's a one-off series that kind of it follows the same like universe, the monster verse.
• 1:03:05
SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's uh it's it's a contained story in the 90s with Kong.
• 1:03:10
SPEAKER_01: It's called it's just called Skull Island, and it's on Netflix.
• 1:03:13
SPEAKER_01: And I doubt we're ever gonna cover it here, so you can probably watch that one.
• 1:03:18
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 1:03:18
SPEAKER_01: And you will learn more about Kong and everyone in that one.
• 1:03:23
SPEAKER_03: Well, I'm gonna have to take a look at that one because uh so what do we uh what are we uh looking for next?
• 1:03:27
SPEAKER_00: What are we uh yeah, what are we doing next week, guys?
• 1:03:30
SPEAKER_00: I was thinking the departed.
• 1:03:33
  SPEAKER_00: I was joking.
• 1:03:34
SPEAKER_00: I just feel like that's kind of a sister movie to this movie.
• 1:03:37
SPEAKER_00: It takes place in Boston, there's complex characters.
• 1:03:43
SPEAKER_00: There actually is a lot of similarities, and I'm not gonna go into it because Rich hasn't seen the departed.
• 1:03:48
SPEAKER_01: Thanks for listening to us for for our 160 second episode of Project Geekology.
• 1:03:53
SPEAKER_01: Uh please be sure to give us a follow and a juicy five star review if you haven't already.
• 1:03:59
SPEAKER_01: Um, wherever you're listening to your podcasts.
• 1:04:02
  SPEAKER_01: And yeah, guys.
• 1:04:06
SPEAKER_01: Oh, may the moth rule be with you.
• 1:04:08
  SPEAKER_02: The Wolverine.
• 1:04:10
  SPEAKER_00: The Mothro.
