- 1:08Speaker 8: It's a podcast called twenty five whistline.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Right, we're here blowing Addie you group, thank you. Now,
- 1:16Speaker 1: we have at least three coaches in the College Football
- 1:18Speaker 1: Playoff on the show, which is pretty cool. So some
- 1:22Speaker 1: awesome coaches we've sat down with, and these are some
- 1:24Speaker 1: of the favorite moments from those coaches. Dan Lanning at
- 1:27Speaker 1: Oregon's my new friend.
- 1:28Speaker 9: Well, yeah, that's awesome new friend.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, sometimes he texted me it's pretty cool. Well
- 1:32Speaker 1: three times ever, three times ever, three times ever. First up,
- 1:35Speaker 1: we're gonna start there number one overall seed in the
- 1:38Speaker 1: College Football Playoff. Oregon's head coach Dan Lanning. We went
- 1:41Speaker 1: to Eugene this past summer, and I will say it
- 1:43Speaker 1: is not an easy trip to get there.
- 1:45Speaker 9: No, it is further than I thought. It's a lot,
- 1:48Speaker 9: but it's beautiful out there.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It better be because it's not even it's not even near,
- 1:53Speaker 1: like you go to Portland and you gotta drive a
- 1:54Speaker 1: couple hours. Sure, but yeah, but he was awesome. The
- 1:57Speaker 1: facility amazing. I mean, they have Nike money and they
- 2:00Speaker 1: went Amazings and so now they have a shot at
- 2:03Speaker 1: finishing the season undefeated, win a national championship. So big
- 2:07Speaker 1: thanks to University of Oregon and coach Landing for having
- 2:09Speaker 1: us out. Here's about ten minutes of my favorite part
- 2:12Speaker 1: of that conversation. Coach, thanks, appreciate you being here.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Actually we're here. I guess you're already here, so I
- 2:18Speaker 3: appreciate us to be in here, right, Yeah, yes for coming.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I got a couple questions for you when I was
- 2:23Speaker 1: looking at kind of your history. You went from being
- 2:27Speaker 1: a GA obviously to a position coach, but then back
- 2:30Speaker 1: to a GA at Bama. Was that a tough call
- 2:33Speaker 1: for you to take a step back, but the program
- 2:35Speaker 1: was a step up?
- 2:37Speaker 6: Yeah, it really wasn't. I knew I had more to learn.
- 2:41Speaker 10: Certainly financially it didn't make a lot of sense, but
- 2:43Speaker 10: from a professional development standpoint, it was definitely the right move.
- 2:48Speaker 1: How much do you say when it comes to what
- 2:52Speaker 1: uniforms are going to wear or what uniforms are going
- 2:55Speaker 1: to be created. Do you ever see one that doesn't
- 2:56Speaker 1: even get to the player's eyes because you're like that
- 2:58Speaker 1: one is not good?
- 3:00Speaker 10: Sometimes there's a no, but but once once we have
- 3:03Speaker 10: the go, that's kind of where I step out, right,
- 3:05Speaker 10: so I get to see him in advance.
- 3:08Speaker 6: But our creative team, our design group, uh.
- 3:11Speaker 10: They do they do an unbelievable job and then they
- 3:13Speaker 10: get a lot of feedback from our players. Right, Kenny
- 3:15Speaker 10: Farr does a great job working with Nike and you
- 3:18Speaker 10: know those guys that create some some awesome get ups.
- 3:20Speaker 6: For our guys.
- 3:21Speaker 10: But a lot of times we get to the game
- 3:23Speaker 10: on Saturday, when I walk out the tunnel, that's when
- 3:24Speaker 10: I see.
- 3:25Speaker 6: It the first time.
- 3:26Speaker 10: No way, not not the very first time. But like,
- 3:28Speaker 10: but I'm not that week. I'm a lot more.
- 3:30Speaker 6: Worried about the opponent than what we're gonna work to
- 3:32Speaker 6: the game.
- 3:32Speaker 3: I feel like my party jerseys.
- 3:36Speaker 1: So do you have like a guy that will say
- 3:39Speaker 1: to you, hey, this looks great? This does it? Is
- 3:42Speaker 1: there a an aesthetics head of aesthetics here?
- 3:45Speaker 10: No, we have an equipment manager, you know, and he's
- 3:49Speaker 10: on top of it, he does as good job as
- 3:51Speaker 10: anybody in the nation. In fact, I think he's the
- 3:52Speaker 10: best in the nation. When it comes to piecing this together.
- 3:55Speaker 10: It's Kenny farr H. And again he does a great
- 3:57Speaker 10: job of meeting with our players, collaborating with them, collaborate
- 4:00Speaker 10: reading with.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Nike to create some really cool setups for our guys.
- 4:03Speaker 5: Coach of the network loves highlighting your excitement and you
- 4:07Speaker 5: pumping up the team. And there's always a video montage
- 4:09Speaker 5: of somewhere during the game. Do you sometimes go home
- 4:12Speaker 5: and watch and be like, oh, man, like went too hard?
- 4:14Speaker 5: I went way too hard.
- 4:16Speaker 11: You know.
- 4:16Speaker 6: I don't normally watch the TV copy.
- 4:18Speaker 10: You know, at times we might go back and like
- 4:20Speaker 10: peel through it for you know, to to make sure
- 4:23Speaker 10: we don't putting any signals on film or things like that.
- 4:26Speaker 10: But I don't spend a lot of time watching that.
- 4:27Speaker 10: And I'm never gonna be I'm never gonna apologize for passion.
- 4:31Speaker 10: I think the players are going to match your energy
- 4:33Speaker 10: and enthusiasm, So that's something I always want to carry
- 4:35Speaker 10: on the field.
- 4:36Speaker 3: You mentioned you're not gonna watch signal, possibly because signals
- 4:41Speaker 3: could be out there that that's not really a thing anymore.
- 4:43Speaker 10: I think it'll still exist in college football just because
- 4:46Speaker 10: there's still gonna be some teams that carry tempo, and
- 4:48Speaker 10: if you're you know, reliant to just giving the call
- 4:50Speaker 10: and when to one guy in the field, you're probably
- 4:52Speaker 10: going to be short. You know, you want eleven guys
- 4:55Speaker 10: playing the same call on both sides of the ball.
- 4:57Speaker 10: So at times, I think signals will still exist.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Are you advocating now that every player has communication to
- 5:02Speaker 1: their helmet because that's what I hear.
- 5:03Speaker 6: Yeah, i'd be, I'd be. I'd be great with that.
- 5:06Speaker 10: There's probably some guys that there's such thing as too
- 5:09Speaker 10: much information too. When you get on the field, your
- 5:12Speaker 10: best players, you just wanted to be all play. But yeah,
- 5:14Speaker 10: I think there's probably a benefit to just to where
- 5:16Speaker 10: everybody can hear the call, and that would.
- 5:18Speaker 6: That would certainly help things.
- 5:19Speaker 1: What if everybody else could talk back? Because I worked
- 5:21Speaker 1: at Hobby Lobby for a while and they gave me
- 5:24Speaker 1: a speaker. I was on the thing all the time
- 5:25Speaker 1: and I didn't need to say anything.
- 5:27Speaker 10: You ever been on alwaukie talkie where the other guy's
- 5:29Speaker 10: always talking and you can ever.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yeah, that was me and hobby lobby. They'd be like, hey,
- 5:33Speaker 1: go down and set up this display. And I was like, hey, guys,
- 5:35Speaker 1: if you look at three like I out three like
- 5:38Speaker 1: she's got to you know that kind of stuff.
- 5:40Speaker 3: So, yeah, that probably wouldn't be good right and not
- 5:42Speaker 3: be a good thing.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Do you ever feel like you you'll change your offense
- 5:47Speaker 1: or defense based on personnel that comes in if the
- 5:51Speaker 1: talent is so strikingly Let's say, you know, you run
- 5:54Speaker 1: wide open, but let's say the guy comes in and
- 5:57Speaker 1: is a straight ahead runner and maybe doesn't need it
- 5:59Speaker 1: as well open, Will you change your offense at all
- 6:01Speaker 1: for that?
- 6:02Speaker 6: Absolutely?
- 6:02Speaker 10: I think a coach's job is to match the you know,
- 6:05Speaker 10: the talents of his personnel, and that's, you know, going
- 6:08Speaker 10: back to being a high school coach, I think you
- 6:10Speaker 10: have to look and see what your players do.
- 6:11Speaker 6: Best and try to make sure you're utilizing their talents.
- 6:13Speaker 1: When you were your first GA job, what was the
- 6:18Speaker 1: goal for you there? Was it to be a head
- 6:20Speaker 1: coach at a major university?
- 6:23Speaker 6: Yeah? I mean that that was a goal early on.
- 6:25Speaker 10: But you know, early in my career, I think I
- 6:27Speaker 10: figured out just be the best at where I'm at
- 6:28Speaker 10: and try to do jobs that nobody else wants to do.
- 6:31Speaker 1: When you're defensive cornator Georgia. I hated you, man, I
- 6:33Speaker 1: hated you. Who's your team Arkansas?
- 6:35Speaker 12: Yeah?
- 6:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I hate you.
- 6:38Speaker 9: Get that coach?
- 6:38Speaker 1: Yeah, And you know, not every O C or d
- 6:42Speaker 1: C is known, especially when you' under somebody like a
- 6:44Speaker 1: Kirby Smart or a Nick Saban, two guys that you've worked.
- 6:47Speaker 3: With, right, both those guys.
- 6:49Speaker 1: I hated you because there was there was no opportunity.
- 6:52Speaker 1: It was ugly when you have the players like that
- 6:56Speaker 1: and you're playing I don't know, let's let's just make
- 6:58Speaker 1: up a team Arkansas and they're week do you know,
- 7:01Speaker 1: like this game all we have to do, If we
- 7:03Speaker 1: do exactly what we've set forward, it is.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Going to be over. They are not going to get anything.
- 7:07Speaker 13: You know.
- 7:07Speaker 10: The great thing about football is you never really feel
- 7:09Speaker 10: that way. And I get nervous before every single game.
- 7:12Speaker 10: Certainly we have more talent than Arkansas when we played them.
- 7:15Speaker 3: But Arkansas, No, No, we're talking about hypothetical.
- 7:20Speaker 6: How's the talent for Arkansas?
- 7:21Speaker 11: No?
- 7:22Speaker 3: No, no, no, it's better. Is that a better coach?
- 7:24Speaker 14: Yeah?
- 7:24Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, I mean I think anytime you go in
- 7:27Speaker 10: there knowing that if you don't, if you don't accomplish
- 7:30Speaker 10: your goals and really, you know, operate on the same page,
- 7:32Speaker 10: you got an opportunity to lose in college football, and
- 7:34Speaker 10: that's part of what makes the game so great. So
- 7:37Speaker 10: we try to prepare for every game the same and
- 7:39Speaker 10: and hope that we go play our best and the
- 7:40Speaker 10: result hopefully takes care of itself.
- 7:43Speaker 1: When you walk into a mom or a dad or
- 7:45Speaker 1: a grandma who remember raises the athlete that you're trying
- 7:48Speaker 1: to recruit, What do they know about you? Once you're gone?
- 7:51Speaker 1: That makes them want to come here? Once I'm gone, Yeah,
- 7:54Speaker 1: once you leave the room, once you leave the house.
- 7:56Speaker 10: Just then I'm authentic, Like I'm the same guy today
- 8:00Speaker 10: that I was, you know, twenty years ago. I hope
- 8:01Speaker 10: that's what people can always say about me, that just
- 8:03Speaker 10: because positions have changed and situations changed, that I'm the
- 8:06Speaker 10: same person and that family.
- 8:08Speaker 6: Matters to me.
- 8:08Speaker 10: I think if you're in the room with me for
- 8:10Speaker 10: ten minutes, you're probably gonna hear about my boys and
- 8:12Speaker 10: my wife, and that's something that's important to me. And
- 8:15Speaker 10: that we treat the players on our team the same way.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Sometimes I'll see and I have a little warehouse. We do.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I have a little clothing line. It's we do a
- 8:22Speaker 1: lot of charity work with our clothing line. And we
- 8:24Speaker 1: have one of those little machines that Prince Olta shirts.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I feel like here there's like a one of those,
- 8:29Speaker 1: you know, apparel printing machines.
- 8:30Speaker 3: You just get anything you want printed.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Is it on campus or do you have to have
- 8:33Speaker 1: a ship to you because it's NonStop everything's Nike, Oregon everything.
- 8:36Speaker 10: Yeah, it's a good setup. You know, we've got an
- 8:38Speaker 10: awesome relationship with Nike.
- 8:39Speaker 3: I don't know about that's the White House here though,
- 8:41Speaker 3: right I couldn't.
- 8:42Speaker 6: I couldn't answer that.
- 8:43Speaker 3: That's a secret.
- 8:43Speaker 6: I know this when I show up to my locker and.
- 8:45Speaker 10: I open it up, there's there's a stuff, and that's
- 8:47Speaker 10: it's pretty awesome. Like I said, Kenny Fard does a
- 8:49Speaker 10: great job of taking care of our staff.
- 8:51Speaker 6: And our players. Yeah, we don't run out of gear.
- 8:53Speaker 10: I didn't used to consider myself a shoe guy, and
- 8:55Speaker 10: now now I got too many.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Shoes without identifying anyone.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Were there ever colors that you just didn't like wearing
- 9:02Speaker 1: because you didn't like the colors? Not here, not Oregon
- 9:07Speaker 1: in other schools you've been at, because some if I
- 9:09Speaker 1: had to wear orange, I'll be honest with you, burnt
- 9:11Speaker 1: or Tennessee orange, I might quit just for that.
- 9:14Speaker 10: Yeah, I guess color never been that. I've never been
- 9:16Speaker 10: that much of a fashionista. I'm not a big fan
- 9:19Speaker 10: of purple, but beyond that, I'm pretty good with any color.
- 9:22Speaker 3: I guess, so light purple probably wouldn't be your jam.
- 9:24Speaker 6: Not m cham like the U c.
- 9:25Speaker 3: A Bears, you wouldn't go coach at UC.
- 9:27Speaker 6: I would go.
- 9:28Speaker 10: I'll coach where there's a job. I'm not going to
- 9:29Speaker 10: make my decisions based off of color.
- 9:31Speaker 8: But luckily for me, I found my last job you
- 9:33Speaker 8: played at UCA was coach Norbal at Florida State.
- 9:36Speaker 3: That's right, and you worked with coach there? What was
- 9:39Speaker 3: he like?
- 9:40Speaker 10: Yeah, he's awesome, like relentless, you know, works works his
- 9:43Speaker 10: taiale off, extremely intelligent, willing to get in there, and
- 9:47Speaker 10: coach will coach every position on the on the field.
- 9:51Speaker 6: You know, unbelievable family.
- 9:52Speaker 10: You know, whenever I work with coach, it's the same
- 9:54Speaker 10: time my wife got diagnosed.
- 9:55Speaker 6: With cancer and he was really good for me and
- 9:56Speaker 6: my family.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Then I'll run through a couple and then coach, what
- 10:00Speaker 3: did you learn from him?
- 10:01Speaker 6: Consistency? You know, the guy's a robot.
- 10:04Speaker 10: He Uh, every morning he's rolling in the office the
- 10:07Speaker 10: exact same time.
- 10:07Speaker 6: We're gonna have a staff me in the same time.
- 10:09Speaker 6: You know.
- 10:09Speaker 10: His his routine was really impressive to see, whether it's
- 10:13Speaker 10: what he's eating every morning or every lunch, the way
- 10:15Speaker 10: he operates day in and day out was was really impressive.
- 10:18Speaker 10: Coach smart, yeah, just uh, enthusiasm, passion, intelligence, ability to adapt.
- 10:26Speaker 10: Always thought he was on the cutting edge of things
- 10:28Speaker 10: and always looking for an edge.
- 10:29Speaker 5: I mean, bones is rolling through all these great coaches
- 10:32Speaker 5: that you worked with, the schools, but he's forgetting Sam
- 10:34Speaker 5: Houston State, we're probably the best school in America.
- 10:38Speaker 10: About the donut shops in Huntsville, Oh, the best, the best,
- 10:42Speaker 10: And I think her cap at a donut shops per talent,
- 10:44Speaker 10: I think it's gotta be one of the hut.
- 10:46Speaker 9: What was your I mean, what was that experience? Like
- 10:49Speaker 9: a lot of people are gonna want to hear about this.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, for social Yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 10: So I worked with Casey Keeler was the head coach there,
- 10:55Speaker 10: and that was that was a great coach to be under.
- 10:58Speaker 10: He really gave you an opportunity to figure out how.
- 11:00Speaker 6: You want to do things. You know, he let his
- 11:02Speaker 6: coaches coach.
- 11:03Speaker 10: He'd push you, he'd questioned you, but he gave you
- 11:06Speaker 10: an opportunity to go, you know, make it what you
- 11:07Speaker 10: wanted to make it. So your dB meeting that day,
- 11:10Speaker 10: your corners meeting that day, it was, you know, how
- 11:12Speaker 10: do you want to build it?
- 11:12Speaker 6: What do you want to look like? The drill work
- 11:14Speaker 6: you did.
- 11:14Speaker 10: On the field, and you make some mistakes, but you
- 11:16Speaker 10: also learned a lot in the process. So I love
- 11:19Speaker 10: my time there at SAM and it's you know, it's it.
- 11:21Speaker 10: It wasn't the bus league at that time, but you
- 11:23Speaker 10: take some long road trips, you know, you do hop
- 11:26Speaker 10: on a charter bus from time to time.
- 11:29Speaker 6: To get the places.
- 11:30Speaker 10: And you know, that's something that I think everybody should
- 11:32Speaker 10: experience in their coaching career.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Going to Sam Houston, keeping it real. I think everybody
- 11:36Speaker 3: should go to SAM.
- 11:37Speaker 9: That's at some point, That's all I says.
- 11:39Speaker 8: Everybody must go to Sam Houston State to coach at
- 11:41Speaker 8: some point. Now, I think you know, my wife and
- 11:43Speaker 8: I have this discussion too. We met at a restaurant
- 11:45Speaker 8: we worked at out back steakhouse together. And I think
- 11:47Speaker 8: the other thing that everybody should do is some point
- 11:49Speaker 8: you should work in the service industry. You should get stiffed,
- 11:51Speaker 8: at some point, you should get an unbelievable tip, at
- 11:53Speaker 8: some point you should, you know, learn how to you know,
- 11:56Speaker 8: make the people at your table happy and learn how
- 11:58Speaker 8: to deal with Okay, the food came out late or
- 12:00Speaker 8: it came.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Out and it's not even waiter's fault, but sometimes you
- 12:03Speaker 3: have to be.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Sometimes like the head coach, like it an't always your fault,
- 12:06Speaker 1: but you got to take it and go and take responsibility.
- 12:08Speaker 10: Can you solve a problem? Yeah, can you solve a problem?
- 12:10Speaker 10: So that's something else that you know. I'm a big
- 12:12Speaker 10: believer in that everybody should have to do that at
- 12:14Speaker 10: some point.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Next up, also in the college football playoff, is Boys
- 12:18Speaker 1: he head coach Spencer Danielson, who still looks young enough
- 12:22Speaker 1: to be like a sophomore on.
- 12:24Speaker 9: The team, makes us feel real old.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Coach.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Danielson was hired in twenty twenty three after starting out
- 12:28Speaker 1: as a GA in twenty seventeen, so he's been there
- 12:31Speaker 1: the whole time, worked himself up the ranks. He now
- 12:33Speaker 1: has a team in the college football Playoff. They even
- 12:35Speaker 1: got a bye. It's pretty awesome. We really enjoyed Coach Danielson.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Here he is coach Spencer Danielson. What is your man
- 12:43Speaker 1: cave like at home or your office? You know, because
- 12:45Speaker 1: a lot you probably have a lot of screens and
- 12:46Speaker 1: you can easily just say it's an office, like, what
- 12:48Speaker 1: is your place like at home?
- 12:49Speaker 3: Coach?
- 12:49Speaker 15: I'll be honest, guys, I don't have a man cave.
- 12:51Speaker 15: I got two little girls, a three and a half
- 12:53Speaker 15: year old and a two and a half year old.
- 12:55Speaker 15: So the spare room we have is filled with dressed
- 12:59Speaker 15: up elsa from Frozen. There's a little kitchen in there
- 13:03Speaker 15: with a bunch of fake food. So when I come home, man,
- 13:07Speaker 15: I joke with people that the beautiful thing about being
- 13:09Speaker 15: a girl dad is you know how much those.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Two little girls care about football? Not one bit?
- 13:14Speaker 15: You know when I come home. Literally last night, I
- 13:17Speaker 15: came home and my wife bought this t Rex dress
- 13:20Speaker 15: up costume that my three year old was ready to
- 13:23Speaker 15: scare me when I walked.
- 13:23Speaker 7: In the door.
- 13:24Speaker 15: So it's you know, it's so cool to be able
- 13:27Speaker 15: to blend those things, especially as a coach. You have to,
- 13:29Speaker 15: I mean my girls come to practice a ton. I
- 13:31Speaker 15: want our coach to bring their families around. So at home,
- 13:34Speaker 15: I don't really got the bad caveto my wife. I'll
- 13:36Speaker 15: put whatever game's on in the in the living room
- 13:39Speaker 15: and I'll be, you know, watching the girls, and then
- 13:41Speaker 15: this out this side of my as.
- 13:42Speaker 4: I'll be watching some football. But it's my wife's a
- 13:45Speaker 4: rock star.
- 13:45Speaker 15: I mean we met in college at a Zuza Pacific,
- 13:48Speaker 15: which I'm sure you guys have never heard of.
- 13:50Speaker 4: It's okay, it's the Harvard.
- 13:51Speaker 15: Of the West, and you know, it's just it's been
- 13:54Speaker 15: an awesome just experience for us through the year. This
- 13:55Speaker 15: is year number eight for us at Boise, So this
- 13:58Speaker 15: has really become home. Like it's a great place to
- 14:01Speaker 15: live and thrive. And everything I do is to impact
- 14:04Speaker 15: these kids. And I'm open about my faith. I talked
- 14:07Speaker 15: to our players about loving Jesus a lot, and some
- 14:10Speaker 15: people don't like that. I'm like, well, this is me.
- 14:11Speaker 4: It's my foundation, and so just so hombled and blessed
- 14:14Speaker 4: to be here and be a part of it.
- 14:15Speaker 1: How do you find time to be a good husband
- 14:17Speaker 1: during season? I travel a lot. If I'm either doing
- 14:20Speaker 1: stand up or whatever, project. I'm on the road a lot,
- 14:23Speaker 1: but my wife and I really have dedicated like Tuesday
- 14:25Speaker 1: evenings even for like four hours, we specifically have that time.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Now for you, it could possibly be different during the
- 14:31Speaker 1: season than not, But how do you make sure you
- 14:33Speaker 1: can still dedicate some time to your wife and family
- 14:36Speaker 1: during a football season.
- 14:39Speaker 15: Yeah, so much of it is just and I'm working
- 14:41Speaker 15: on it every single day. I'm not gonna sit here
- 14:43Speaker 15: and say that I got to figure it out by
- 14:44Speaker 15: any means.
- 14:45Speaker 4: We're going on year ten of marriage, and first off
- 14:49Speaker 4: is a testament to my wife. She's a rock star.
- 14:51Speaker 15: But I mean Coach Pete's a huge mentor of mine.
- 14:54Speaker 15: And you know something I've took it from him is
- 14:56Speaker 15: just blending your home life with you do it with football,
- 15:01Speaker 15: and then you just got to be intentional. So like
- 15:03Speaker 15: even in a game week situation like Sundays, I try
- 15:06Speaker 15: to make sure I get home Sundays, make sure I
- 15:09Speaker 15: get dinner with the family and put our girls to sleep,
- 15:11Speaker 15: like that's a non negotiable. Tuesdays after practice, me and
- 15:15Speaker 15: my wife outside.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Of Boise, we gotta right our outside of our facility.
- 15:20Speaker 14: There's a river.
- 15:20Speaker 15: Me and my wife on Tuesdays after practice, will go
- 15:23Speaker 15: on a thirty minute walk and just talk about life,
- 15:26Speaker 15: how the girls are doing, how she's doing. We have
- 15:29Speaker 15: a we're expecting another baby in March, so kind of
- 15:32Speaker 15: going through how she's feeling. And then on Thursday night
- 15:35Speaker 15: is date night for us. And then depending if it's
- 15:37Speaker 15: home or away, kind of going through those things. And
- 15:39Speaker 15: then so much of it is trying to get our
- 15:41Speaker 15: you know, my girls and my wife in the facility,
- 15:44Speaker 15: around around our players, because not just for the connection
- 15:48Speaker 15: with me and my family, but I think one for
- 15:51Speaker 15: our kids to see us working, because even as a
- 15:53Speaker 15: young kids, they just you're either home or you're at work, right,
- 15:56Speaker 15: there's not sometimes they can't even calculate why is my
- 15:59Speaker 15: dad not here? Or I want them to see what
- 16:01Speaker 15: their dad's doing, and I want them to see there's
- 16:04Speaker 15: quality and hard work, like hard work means a lot, like.
- 16:08Speaker 4: There's no substitute for it. And I also want our players.
- 16:11Speaker 15: A lot of our players come from home situations where
- 16:13Speaker 15: they didn't have a dad. I mean they're raised by
- 16:15Speaker 15: their mom, their auntie, their grandma, maybe a coach. So
- 16:19Speaker 15: I want them not that we're perfect examples. We're working
- 16:21Speaker 15: our tailoft always improved, but I want them to see
- 16:23Speaker 15: what a husband and a father looks like.
- 16:25Speaker 4: We got players in our team that are dads. Want
- 16:28Speaker 4: them to see what this looks like.
- 16:29Speaker 15: Not perfect, it's not about perfection, but seeing us in
- 16:34Speaker 15: that space. For our players to be around, those things
- 16:36Speaker 15: are huge. So try and be very intentional with the
- 16:38Speaker 15: time we have, especially in season, and make sure that
- 16:40Speaker 15: it's on my schedule. This is my time with my wife,
- 16:43Speaker 15: or this is the time that I'm doing this.
- 16:44Speaker 4: And try to stick to as much we can.
- 16:46Speaker 1: We have a lot of parents that will listen to
- 16:47Speaker 1: the show and talk about and ask questions about.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Their kids playing sports.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Would you prefer a kid play a bunch of sports
- 16:54Speaker 1: or really dedicate themselves to one.
- 16:56Speaker 4: I would love.
- 16:57Speaker 15: Someone to play as many sports as they can. I'm
- 16:59Speaker 15: such a firm and just playing as many sports as
- 17:04Speaker 15: you can from the youngest age you can play them.
- 17:06Speaker 4: And I just think being able to build the overall
- 17:09Speaker 4: athlete is such a big deal.
- 17:12Speaker 15: And I see all the way through high school, like
- 17:14Speaker 15: I love like we I want to recruit guys that
- 17:16Speaker 15: run track, play basketball, baseball because it just shows the
- 17:19Speaker 15: different skill set that they're into and especially even more
- 17:23Speaker 15: college has become college footballs becoming even so much more specific,
- 17:27Speaker 15: and they are recruiting where guys are getting offers as
- 17:29Speaker 15: freshman high school. We don't do a lot of that
- 17:32Speaker 15: because we're a developmental program. I got to see how
- 17:35Speaker 15: you're developing from fourteen to fifteen to sixteen years old,
- 17:39Speaker 15: to see what that fit is. And I want to
- 17:41Speaker 15: see someone you know, running track playing basketball, because I
- 17:44Speaker 15: think there's you're building an overall athletic skill set, not
- 17:48Speaker 15: maybe just so specific to what you're doing on the
- 17:51Speaker 15: high school football field.
- 17:53Speaker 5: Yeah, coach, he's talking about parents, you know. So at
- 17:56Speaker 5: the middle school level, high school level, you're dealing with
- 17:59Speaker 5: a lot of parents is getting involved with their kids,
- 18:01Speaker 5: and the coaches have to deal with that. What about
- 18:03Speaker 5: the college level, do you have to deal with parents
- 18:05Speaker 5: of players and tell them like, whoh, I got this.
- 18:09Speaker 4: I'd say a little bit more of the door. I
- 18:10Speaker 4: mean so for me, I mean just and.
- 18:12Speaker 15: Once again I say this stuff by no means that
- 18:14Speaker 15: I got to figure out. It's just my heart and
- 18:15Speaker 15: it's who God made me. When I say we're a
- 18:18Speaker 15: developmental program, you need to make sure everybody's involved in
- 18:22Speaker 15: developing these kids. So when when with our players, I
- 18:25Speaker 15: zoom with our parents once a month. So once a
- 18:29Speaker 15: month there's a zoom set where every parent will get
- 18:31Speaker 15: on a zoom we'll talk about our team, where we're at.
- 18:35Speaker 15: Every week, my assistant will send out a weekly newsletter
- 18:39Speaker 15: kind of like.
- 18:39Speaker 4: Hey, these are some highlights from the week. These are
- 18:42Speaker 4: some guys that are you know, doing some really good things.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Blah blah blah.
- 18:45Speaker 15: And then I'm involved with our parents like and I
- 18:47Speaker 15: don't I don't talk much about playing time, but I
- 18:49Speaker 15: tell me, if you are concerned and you're frustrated, I
- 18:53Speaker 15: want you to call me and not sit on those
- 18:55Speaker 15: things because I want to be able to be real
- 18:57Speaker 15: and open with them. I believe in truth, and so
- 19:00Speaker 15: if a parent is frustrated that their teams should be
- 19:02Speaker 15: or their sons should be playing more, I want them
- 19:04Speaker 15: to call me because I'd rather tell you this is
- 19:06Speaker 15: why your son is not These are the things that
- 19:08Speaker 15: he's struggling in because they're only getting one side of
- 19:11Speaker 15: the story. They're getting the story that you know. I'm
- 19:14Speaker 15: not playing because of these things. I want to give
- 19:15Speaker 15: them the truth of this is where we need your.
- 19:17Speaker 4: Son to grow.
- 19:17Speaker 15: And so I want to keep the lines of communication open,
- 19:20Speaker 15: and especially in this you know, new landscape of college
- 19:24Speaker 15: football with the transfer portal, is I want our parents
- 19:27Speaker 15: to know exactly what we're doing and how we're developing
- 19:30Speaker 15: their sons. And I believe that we're going to develop
- 19:32Speaker 15: their sons better than any other school. Maybe other schools
- 19:35Speaker 15: can offer them other things, but there's not going to
- 19:37Speaker 15: be a place that they're going to develop more.
- 19:38Speaker 4: And I think being.
- 19:40Speaker 15: On the same page with these parents and just being
- 19:43Speaker 15: intentional to be upfront with them, and that's where that's
- 19:45Speaker 15: why I zoom with them once a month so they
- 19:47Speaker 15: can know my messaging.
- 19:49Speaker 4: This is what when.
- 19:50Speaker 15: We talk about practice performance like, this is what I mean.
- 19:54Speaker 15: So if your son is performing in practice, you're going
- 19:57Speaker 15: to see him play more in the game. If your
- 19:59Speaker 15: son is not playing in the game, you know that
- 20:01Speaker 15: that's probably because he's not performing.
- 20:03Speaker 4: The way we need him to in practice.
- 20:05Speaker 15: So I'm intentional to be truthful with our parents to
- 20:08Speaker 15: know the landscape so then they can filter through some
- 20:12Speaker 15: of the information they're maybe getting from their sons.
- 20:14Speaker 1: If there's a concert coming to Boise and who is
- 20:17Speaker 1: it that you will not miss?
- 20:20Speaker 15: Oh, good question, I'm probably more on the on the
- 20:22Speaker 15: country side of things. I don't listen to a ton
- 20:26Speaker 15: of music. I listened to a lot of worship music.
- 20:28Speaker 15: I like Elevation Maverick City are two of my favorite
- 20:32Speaker 15: worship band. But I'd say like country artists. I'm a
- 20:35Speaker 15: huge Luke Holms guy. He came to the Blue a
- 20:37Speaker 15: couple of years ago. Didn't miss it.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Who else would I say? I like Morgan wall And.
- 20:47Speaker 15: If there's a if there's a country concert coming to
- 20:49Speaker 15: boise Ido and we're not doing football, I'm gonna I
- 20:53Speaker 15: finally got some cowboy boots this offseason, so you better
- 20:57Speaker 15: believe that I'm gonna be I'll be rocket those.
- 21:00Speaker 1: To final question, do you ever just want to give
- 21:01Speaker 1: yourself the game ball in front of everybody?
- 21:05Speaker 4: Give it to me, boys, look at me. This is
- 21:07Speaker 4: what I got going up. I mean, I'll be honest, No,
- 21:11Speaker 4: i'd either's.
- 21:11Speaker 15: I mean, I just I'm one of those guys that's
- 21:14Speaker 15: probably overly emotional, Like every time I talk to our team,
- 21:17Speaker 15: I gotta fight crying because I just love these kids.
- 21:20Speaker 4: I mean, I see the work they put in, the
- 21:22Speaker 4: grind they do.
- 21:23Speaker 15: I mean, when it's January, Ashon gent's doing up downs
- 21:27Speaker 15: in the snow, and then you see them do what
- 21:30Speaker 15: they do. That's why I mean after these games, I'm
- 21:33Speaker 15: emotional because you know, I I just am so respectful
- 21:37Speaker 15: of our players not running from hard work, not taking
- 21:39Speaker 15: the easy road, doing you know, really enjoying hard stuff.
- 21:43Speaker 15: And I think that's uncommon in college football right now.
- 21:47Speaker 15: And I'm not saying that makes us better perfect by
- 21:50Speaker 15: any means, but I do think. You know, Boise State
- 21:52Speaker 15: is built on this blue collar mentality, and our players
- 21:55Speaker 15: do that every day. That doesn't mean that we're gonna
- 21:57Speaker 15: win every game. It means that we're gonna give ourselves
- 21:59Speaker 15: a good shot. So I could say after the games
- 22:02Speaker 15: that I haven't had that fight in my heart. I've
- 22:06Speaker 15: been giving a couple and I'm like, man, give this
- 22:07Speaker 15: to the guy that just score five touchdown.
- 22:09Speaker 4: I didn't do anything. I'm a I'm a glorified cheerleader.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Coach, we really appreciate the time we're rooting for you.
- 22:14Speaker 4: I appreciate you.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Moving on to Marcus Freeman, he's the head coach at
- 22:17Speaker 1: Notre Dame, and he made me feel like I could
- 22:19Speaker 1: go play at Notre Dame right now totally. I probably
- 22:22Speaker 1: wouldn't because it's cold. And that's the only reason I
- 22:26Speaker 1: could for him. I can play linebacker. I'm not going
- 22:28Speaker 1: to play that anywhere. It's freezing cold there. But man,
- 22:31Speaker 1: this dude he played linebacker at Ohio State.
- 22:34Speaker 3: He was the.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Defensive coordinator, and then when Brian Kelly left to go
- 22:40Speaker 1: to LSU, he became the inne Roman, then the head coach.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I mean, he still looks like he can go right now.
- 22:45Speaker 1: So Marcus Freeman from Notre Dame. Here is Coach Freeman. Hey, coach,
- 22:50Speaker 1: thank you very much for the time.
- 22:51Speaker 7: We really appreciate it absolutely, man, glad to be on here.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Question number one, when you're recruiting a kid, do they
- 22:56Speaker 1: ever say it's just too cold up there?
- 22:58Speaker 3: Coach?
- 23:00Speaker 12: If they say that, I probably turn away as fast
- 23:04Speaker 12: as I can. You know, I let them know that. Listen, man,
- 23:06Speaker 12: we got jackets, we have indoor stadium, an indoor practice facility.
- 23:10Speaker 12: I'm from the north, I'm from Ohio, a Midwest guy,
- 23:13Speaker 12: and so listen, cold is cold, and you don't ever
- 23:16Speaker 12: get used to it. You just got to put on
- 23:18Speaker 12: more clothes and at some point you'll you'll figure it out.
- 23:21Speaker 12: But you know, most kids that say, coach, I can't
- 23:25Speaker 12: play in the cold. You know right away you're not
- 23:27Speaker 12: going to get them.
- 23:28Speaker 3: What's like the trick to catching balls in the cold.
- 23:30Speaker 1: I know you look at me and you go, that
- 23:31Speaker 1: guy was a heck of a high school receiver, and coach,
- 23:33Speaker 1: I accept that. Thank you for saying that in your mind.
- 23:35Speaker 1: But I always struggle catching balls in the cold. I
- 23:38Speaker 1: catch balls in the warm, but catching balls in the cold, like,
- 23:40Speaker 1: what is the key to catching a ball in cold weather?
- 23:43Speaker 12: You know, I think you've got to try to keep
- 23:45Speaker 12: your hands warm, Like, if your hands are frozen, you're
- 23:47Speaker 12: not going to be a great pass catcher. And so
- 23:50Speaker 12: you know, obviously hand warmers, they have those, the handwarmers
- 23:54Speaker 12: that you were outside of your uniform. But in between plays,
- 23:58Speaker 12: it's really important to keep your hands warm, and so
- 24:02Speaker 12: you have to use different things to make sure that happens.
- 24:04Speaker 12: That that might be handwarmers inside your glove, that might
- 24:07Speaker 12: be a couple of different things. But if your hands
- 24:09Speaker 12: are frozed, you're not gonna catch that ball.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Can you wear doctors gloves inside of a glove?
- 24:13Speaker 7: Yeah, there's some players that do that. There's some coaches
- 24:15Speaker 7: that do that.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Dang that's what I would do, because we'd be in
- 24:19Speaker 1: the deer woods and I wear doctors gloves underneath gloves,
- 24:21Speaker 1: and I was made fun of. Do you guys make
- 24:22Speaker 1: fun of people who do that? Because if so, I
- 24:24Speaker 1: take offense.
- 24:26Speaker 13: Not.
- 24:26Speaker 12: As as long as you get your job done, nobody's
- 24:29Speaker 12: gonna make funey. You always say there's no there's no
- 24:31Speaker 12: such thing as a cold tough guy. And so you
- 24:34Speaker 12: know if you're if you're cold, you're cold. You're not
- 24:36Speaker 12: being a tough guy. So do whatever it takes and
- 24:38Speaker 12: make sure you're warm.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Now you're gonna be humble here. I would prefer you not,
- 24:43Speaker 1: but maybe we can meet somewhere in the middle. Do
- 24:45Speaker 1: you think you could play a solid two to three
- 24:48Speaker 1: minutes a game right now you've said enough.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Enough?
- 24:57Speaker 12: Yeah, it depends on what the offense is doing. But yeah, listen,
- 25:00Speaker 12: I mean, my pride is telling me I could give
- 25:02Speaker 12: you two to three minutes. The outcome might be something
- 25:08Speaker 12: that the offensive defense doesn't want, but you, my pride
- 25:12Speaker 12: tells me, yeah, I could play a couple of plays.
- 25:14Speaker 1: If you win a big game, how quickly do you
- 25:16Speaker 1: go home? Do you have a bit of family time
- 25:18Speaker 1: at home or do you get right to film that
- 25:20Speaker 1: evening depending on who the next opponent is.
- 25:23Speaker 7: Yeah, I go right away. That's just who I am.
- 25:25Speaker 12: If it's an away game, I make sure I evaluate
- 25:28Speaker 12: the game on the plane as we come back. If
- 25:31Speaker 12: it's a home game, I come right into my office.
- 25:33Speaker 12: For me, it's hard to go home and have family
- 25:36Speaker 12: time when I haven't evaluated the previous game. So I
- 25:38Speaker 12: evaluate that game right away and take some notes and
- 25:41Speaker 12: then go and have a little bit of family time
- 25:43Speaker 12: and come in on Sunday, and now you can be
- 25:45Speaker 12: ready to move on to the next opponent.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Tell me about Riley Leonard as a dude.
- 25:49Speaker 12: He's awesome man. He is just a great human being.
- 25:54Speaker 12: He's a great teammate. There's not enough compliments that I
- 25:56Speaker 12: can give him, but he is a wonderful for individual.
- 26:02Speaker 1: So after the loss at Northern Illinois, what was the
- 26:06Speaker 1: big takeaway that has changed this team for the good?
- 26:09Speaker 7: I think it's just the mindset that we have to have.
- 26:13Speaker 12: And I said this to the media on the Monday
- 26:17Speaker 12: after that game, is that this is the first time
- 26:19Speaker 12: for me as the head coach of my three years
- 26:21Speaker 12: that we won that big game early. You know, we
- 26:24Speaker 12: lost to Ohio State the past two years early in
- 26:26Speaker 12: the season, and it was kind of like you were
- 26:28Speaker 12: humbled and you got to make sure you're getting ready
- 26:30Speaker 12: for the next opponent. But this time we won the
- 26:32Speaker 12: big one early over Texas A and M. And I
- 26:35Speaker 12: think as we look back, we didn't have the right mindset,
- 26:37Speaker 12: the mental approach to this game. And I don't think
- 26:39Speaker 12: anybody in this program believed that we could lose the
- 26:42Speaker 12: Northern Illinois. And you know, sometimes you have too much
- 26:45Speaker 12: pride and you get humbled, and we were humbled. And
- 26:47Speaker 12: I think I often tell this group in this program,
- 26:50Speaker 12: like we have to keep that pain and we have
- 26:52Speaker 12: to remember what it was like to lose that game.
- 26:56Speaker 12: And so we can never lack in the mental approach
- 26:59Speaker 12: to the preparation. It's not just a physical approach, it's
- 27:01Speaker 12: a mental approach. And we know if we don't prepare
- 27:03Speaker 12: the right way and respect our opponents the way we should,
- 27:06Speaker 12: then we can be beat by anybody in the country.
- 27:08Speaker 12: And so that's what we got to understand. And it's
- 27:12Speaker 12: you know, easy at first to have that mindset. And
- 27:14Speaker 12: now you've had a couple of wins, and you know
- 27:17Speaker 12: people are telling you how good this.
- 27:19Speaker 7: Team is, but we got to keep that same mindset.
- 27:21Speaker 7: It's just this is who we are.
- 27:23Speaker 12: We're not going back to who we used to be,
- 27:26Speaker 12: and we got to approach every week with the right mindset.
- 27:29Speaker 1: I feel like once in Churchill's pretty cool when I
- 27:31Speaker 1: like read what he had to say. I feel like
- 27:33Speaker 1: sometimes I listen to Gary Vee and let's talk about
- 27:36Speaker 1: sports cards. Who is it that you can listen to
- 27:39Speaker 1: talk and it can really fire you up or kind
- 27:41Speaker 1: of reset you.
- 27:42Speaker 12: Oh man, you know there's a couple of people, you know,
- 27:47Speaker 12: every once in a while, listen.
- 27:49Speaker 7: To a motivational speech.
- 27:52Speaker 12: You know, we played a Kobe Bryant video the other day,
- 27:55Speaker 12: just talking about the mindset. I might listen to a
- 27:59Speaker 12: sermon by TD Jakes or something like that. I'll listen
- 28:03Speaker 12: to a coach. I talked to my college coach, Jim
- 28:06Speaker 12: Tressel often, who helps, you know, with my mental approach
- 28:11Speaker 12: as the head coach and the leader each week. But
- 28:14Speaker 12: I think you can grab wisdom from anybody, and it's
- 28:18Speaker 12: all about you know, are you humble enough to accept
- 28:21Speaker 12: the wisdom that's out there?
- 28:22Speaker 1: Do you still call coach Tressell coach?
- 28:25Speaker 7: Absolutely? I always will and.
- 28:27Speaker 1: That's pretty cool. What about your high school coach, You
- 28:28Speaker 1: still call him coach?
- 28:30Speaker 7: I call him coach.
- 28:31Speaker 6: That's right.
- 28:32Speaker 12: I think once you have a coach, like especially somebody
- 28:36Speaker 12: that's older than you and that's impacted you in a
- 28:38Speaker 12: strong way, like they're always coach to you, and no
- 28:41Speaker 12: matter how long or how old you get, you know
- 28:44Speaker 12: they're always going to be coach.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Notre Dame known for their traditional uniforms. We know who
- 28:49Speaker 1: it is when we see it immediately in the land, though,
- 28:51Speaker 1: of everybody wanting ten thousand uniforms, any idea to put
- 28:54Speaker 1: like a couple of hearts on the side of the helmet,
- 28:56Speaker 1: or like just like one game, like switch it up
- 28:58Speaker 1: a couple of lightning bolts like or is it just.
- 29:00Speaker 3: We are who we are, We're not changing.
- 29:02Speaker 12: Listen, there's a little bit of both, right, the the
- 29:05Speaker 12: old traditionalists. You know, every year we wear green jerseys,
- 29:09Speaker 12: and I don't have to be on social media to
- 29:12Speaker 12: hear sometimes the complaints.
- 29:15Speaker 7: Sometimes even within this building.
- 29:16Speaker 12: We have some guys that played here that just love
- 29:18Speaker 12: the tradition Notre Dame, and I can tell it kind
- 29:21Speaker 12: of turns their stomach when they see us in green
- 29:23Speaker 12: or wear a different combination. But I think part of
- 29:27Speaker 12: it is that we have to remember what our tradition is.
- 29:30Speaker 7: Like those gold.
- 29:30Speaker 12: Helmets, the normal home and away uniforms is something that
- 29:35Speaker 12: makes us unique. But the young people like a little
- 29:37Speaker 12: bit of flavor, and so I think you can be
- 29:39Speaker 12: somewhere in the middle where you let your your players
- 29:43Speaker 12: and your captains kind of determine what they want to
- 29:47Speaker 12: wear for that week. But at the same point, let's
- 29:49Speaker 12: not get too far away from the tradition.
- 29:51Speaker 3: What about people not wearing knee pads?
- 29:54Speaker 1: Do you ever like put pads in?
- 29:57Speaker 7: No?
- 29:57Speaker 12: I mean, listen as you looking in NFL, some of
- 30:01Speaker 12: those guys don't wear knee or dipads, and.
- 30:05Speaker 7: You know, it depends on what position you are.
- 30:07Speaker 12: If you're a ball carrier, uh, you probably should have
- 30:10Speaker 12: knee pads in. But a lot of guys on defense,
- 30:13Speaker 12: you know, there's not a whole bunch of cup blocks
- 30:15Speaker 12: anymore unless you're playing Navy and Army. Knee pads can
- 30:20Speaker 12: be overrated at times, but it's all based on the
- 30:23Speaker 12: position you play.
- 30:24Speaker 1: What if one of your guys want to wear like
- 30:26Speaker 1: the old school single bar, like Dick Bucke's helmet is
- 30:29Speaker 1: like coaches, would you allow that?
- 30:33Speaker 7: The only things you better be tough.
- 30:34Speaker 12: Now, if you're gonna wear one of those homes, you
- 30:37Speaker 12: better be tough and represent what that means. But as
- 30:39Speaker 12: long as you go do your job and you're tough,
- 30:41Speaker 12: I'm good with whatever you wear.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I would play for you. I say this all the time.
- 30:44Speaker 1: I know you're not here, but I would play for you,
- 30:46Speaker 1: even though you would never let me. But like, I
- 30:48Speaker 1: watch you and I'm like, that's a dude that I'm
- 30:49Speaker 1: not like at all because I'm not near as tough
- 30:51Speaker 1: or cool or good looking.
- 30:52Speaker 3: But I would like to play for him. So congratulations, coach.
- 30:55Speaker 7: That means a love.
- 30:56Speaker 3: I appreciate you.
- 30:58Speaker 7: I love to host you here anytime.
- 31:00Speaker 13: Man.
- 31:01Speaker 3: All right, long as it's not cold. All right, coach,
- 31:02Speaker 3: see you money?
- 31:04Speaker 7: All right, brother, take care?
- 31:06Speaker 1: All right, let's pick our parlay of the week NFL. Okay,
- 31:10Speaker 1: here's the deal. I'm gonna do money lines. We're doing
- 31:12Speaker 1: four money lines. And some of these money lines might
- 31:14Speaker 1: seem a little easier than others and some will not be.
- 31:16Speaker 1: But I'm going all money lines. I'm feeling pretty good
- 31:18Speaker 1: about these, and we're gonna go first jets at bills
- 31:22Speaker 1: which is probably the easiest. If I'm money lining it,
- 31:24Speaker 1: it's probably the easiest money line ever. Or is it
- 31:27Speaker 1: You ready to be shocked? Naw, you shouldn't be. All right,
- 31:30Speaker 1: Bill's money line easy. They're still trying to get that
- 31:34Speaker 1: buy over in the AFC. We're going Bill's money line.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Now we're gonna go Packers money line over the Vikings.
- 31:40Speaker 1: So you heard what I said. Okay, and it's in Minnesota.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Like I said, the Bills one was easy, that was
- 31:47Speaker 1: the one, no problem. Packers money line over Vikings.
- 31:53Speaker 9: This was a little scary. Bones, of course, some.
- 31:55Speaker 3: Gotta be scary.
- 31:56Speaker 1: We're going Colts money line over the Giant, and you go, well,
- 32:01Speaker 1: that can be pretty simple. But Anthony Richardson, he's a
- 32:03Speaker 1: different person every game. And then finally Raiders money line
- 32:08Speaker 1: over the Saints.
- 32:12Speaker 9: I think about that. Oh gosh, what a toilet bowl?
- 32:18Speaker 1: What a toilet bowl?
- 32:19Speaker 9: That's why, Hey, you know what, dude, if you believe
- 32:21Speaker 9: in it, do it.
- 32:22Speaker 1: We did a four gamer because I think that's that's
- 32:26Speaker 1: where it is. Lots of smiles there. So if you
- 32:28Speaker 1: want to take the twenty five whistles parlay, you can

- 33:06Speaker 1: This one's pretty cool because he was just named SEC
- 33:09Speaker 1: Coach of the Year. It's our talk with twenty twenty
- 33:12Speaker 1: four SEC Coach of the Year from Vanderbilt coach Clark
- 33:15Speaker 1: Lee Man. What a great season for Bandy and when
- 33:18Speaker 1: they beat Alabama, the whole world was like, what Vanderbilt
- 33:22Speaker 1: was oh and sixty all time versus top five teams
- 33:26Speaker 1: and just hadn't beat Bamman forty years. But we love
- 33:29Speaker 1: Coach Lee. We had spent time with him in the past,
- 33:31Speaker 1: got to know him a little bit. He had come
- 33:32Speaker 1: to one of my shows before my comedy shows, came
- 33:35Speaker 1: on stage, talked a little bit. It was really great.
- 33:37Speaker 1: We were super pumped too, because this was right after
- 33:39Speaker 1: Bama and everybody was trying to get him on and
- 33:42Speaker 1: he was so cool to come on with us. So,
- 33:44Speaker 1: Coach Lee, congratulations and here he is. Here he is yes, wow, wow, wow, wow,
- 33:54Speaker 1: Oh my god, what a wow?
- 33:57Speaker 3: What do you even say? Coach come on?
- 34:00Speaker 13: Oh man, I've had to fight and move past that.
- 34:06Speaker 16: You could relive that night, you know, every day for
- 34:08Speaker 16: the rest of your life, if you if you had
- 34:10Speaker 16: your choice.
- 34:10Speaker 13: But we got to move on now.
- 34:12Speaker 3: I hear you.
- 34:13Speaker 1: But okay, well before I move on, let's have ten
- 34:15Speaker 1: minutes with us.
- 34:16Speaker 3: What does your phone look like after that? Coach?
- 34:18Speaker 1: You go to your cell phone, you finally get to
- 34:20Speaker 1: it after everything, and what.
- 34:21Speaker 3: Does it look like?
- 34:22Speaker 13: You know?
- 34:23Speaker 16: I changed my number in May, so over the years
- 34:27Speaker 16: kind of it made the rounds too many times, I think,
- 34:29Speaker 16: And so I was starting to get some kind of
- 34:32Speaker 16: odd ball texts in the springtime and I think changing
- 34:36Speaker 16: my number probably saved me another five hundred texts, you know,
- 34:39Speaker 16: but it was look you for all the for all
- 34:42Speaker 16: the times that you come back to your phone and
- 34:44Speaker 16: it's there's nothing there.
- 34:45Speaker 13: You know, you just you appreciate people wanting to celebrate
- 34:48Speaker 13: with you.
- 34:48Speaker 16: And I think there's there's so many people that you know,
- 34:53Speaker 16: over the years have like falled alongside me or supported
- 34:57Speaker 16: me in some way.
- 34:57Speaker 13: It's special to hear from them. You know, youppreciate that.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Okay, so what matchups did you say leading into that
- 35:04Speaker 1: game that you felt like there was a chance you
- 35:06Speaker 1: could exploit or at least have advantages.
- 35:09Speaker 16: You know, there weren't a lot of I mean, you know,
- 35:11Speaker 16: that's a tough game of tough matchups for us.
- 35:14Speaker 13: I mean, you know, that's a really skilled team.
- 35:16Speaker 16: I think, you know, offensively, we were just trying to
- 35:19Speaker 16: find the space to stay on schedule, and we knew
- 35:23Speaker 16: that if we could possess the ball that we were
- 35:26Speaker 16: going to get a chance to get the ball up
- 35:27Speaker 16: and over the top. You know, they were going to
- 35:29Speaker 16: be opportunities for us to hit some shots, and we
- 35:32Speaker 16: were able to do that.
- 35:33Speaker 13: We missed on some too, but on the whole.
- 35:36Speaker 16: Offensively, it was about staying on schedule and a lot
- 35:39Speaker 16: of that channels obviously through our quarterback run and you know,
- 35:42Speaker 16: our run game is is pretty multiple. So I felt
- 35:46Speaker 16: like we were able to win physically at the point
- 35:49Speaker 16: of attack on offense and create the space we needed
- 35:51Speaker 16: to stay on schedule and that allowed us to extend
- 35:54Speaker 16: drives and have opportunities to puncture the end zone.
- 35:57Speaker 13: Defensively, you know, this.
- 35:59Speaker 16: Was a game where we were we were really interested
- 36:02Speaker 16: in and stopping the quarterbacks ability to extend the plays
- 36:06Speaker 16: with his feet. Obviously, we knew that the explosive passing
- 36:09Speaker 16: game was going to run through number two and you know,
- 36:12Speaker 16: we were just trying to a limit their opportunities by
- 36:16Speaker 16: possessing the ball with our offense and then be you know,
- 36:20Speaker 16: absorb some of their plays without allowing to score explosive touchdowns.
- 36:25Speaker 13: We we did that well enough, you know, to end
- 36:29Speaker 13: up winning the game.
- 36:29Speaker 16: I think there's a few a few we went back,
- 36:31Speaker 16: specifically the third down that they were able to get
- 36:34Speaker 16: the ball over top of us, and again credit to them,
- 36:37Speaker 16: they made the play they needed to make. But you know,
- 36:40Speaker 16: we we we got some things to tighten up defensively,
- 36:43Speaker 16: but what we needed to have happened was we set
- 36:46Speaker 16: a ten possession game, which it ended up being nine
- 36:49Speaker 16: possessions for their offense, you know, we needed to be
- 36:53Speaker 16: able to punch and counter punch, so you know, we
- 36:55Speaker 16: needed to sync up at the right times with with offense,
- 36:59Speaker 16: defense especial teams. We did that, you know, created a
- 37:01Speaker 16: couple of turnovers that were that were huge for us
- 37:04Speaker 16: one including the pick six, and then we needed to
- 37:08Speaker 16: win on special teams and we needed to create a
- 37:10Speaker 16: fuel position advantage, forced them to go to the long field,
- 37:14Speaker 16: try to get us on the short.
- 37:15Speaker 13: Field, and then again we were able to accomplish that
- 37:17Speaker 13: as well.
- 37:18Speaker 16: That's kind of the makings of, you know, what would
- 37:22Speaker 16: be a winning performance for us against anybody. Certainly when
- 37:25Speaker 16: you're playing a team like Alabama, you can't you know,
- 37:29Speaker 16: you can't miss on your strategy and think you're gonna
- 37:31Speaker 16: have a chance to win it.
- 37:32Speaker 1: When you go on at halftime, did you make macro
- 37:36Speaker 1: adjustments or did you just reinforce what you had already
- 37:39Speaker 1: set pre game.
- 37:40Speaker 16: A lot of it is just kind of looking at what,
- 37:44Speaker 16: you know, what is the plan that they had for us,
- 37:46Speaker 16: and let's make sure we're clear on what those things are.
- 37:49Speaker 16: You know, Defensively, it's like the special formations that you're
- 37:52Speaker 16: seeing that they know.
- 37:53Speaker 13: They're going to come back to.
- 37:56Speaker 16: Offensively, it's you know, how are they defending the option,
- 37:59Speaker 16: how are they defending your replays? And what are they
- 38:01Speaker 16: what are they doing in their box that tells you
- 38:03Speaker 16: this is kind of their plan moving forward. And then
- 38:07Speaker 16: to the team, you know, it really was to me
- 38:10Speaker 16: about kind of almost kind of taking some of the
- 38:12Speaker 16: emotion out of the moment, which I.
- 38:15Speaker 13: Know sounds weird.
- 38:16Speaker 16: I mean, look, I'm a I get excited and fired
- 38:19Speaker 16: up and can get emotional in the game. I just
- 38:22Speaker 16: felt like we needed to focus on the fact that
- 38:25Speaker 16: we've been in this situation before that you know, it's
- 38:28Speaker 16: not going to take anything extra from us to close
- 38:32Speaker 16: the game out. You know, we needed to come back
- 38:33Speaker 16: out and focus on again our strategy, playing the cleaning game,
- 38:38Speaker 16: you know, and just stop by stop possession by possession,
- 38:42Speaker 16: you know, closing the game out. So we took our
- 38:44Speaker 16: time before we left the locker room just to kind
- 38:47Speaker 16: of like everyone settle, focus on what we want to
- 38:50Speaker 16: accomplish here in the next thirty minutes and a credit
- 38:53Speaker 16: to our team.
- 38:54Speaker 13: You know they did just that.
- 38:56Speaker 3: Is Diego just like a dog. He seems like a dog.
- 38:58Speaker 3: I mean, I'll watch him. I'm just like that dude
- 38:59Speaker 3: goes home.
- 39:00Speaker 16: Yeah, I mean it's a He's a unique competitive personality,
- 39:04Speaker 16: Like there's not another one that I've ever come across
- 39:08Speaker 16: that is as you know. I think the one thing
- 39:11Speaker 16: that can get a little misunderstood about him is like,
- 39:14Speaker 16: this is a really serious.
- 39:15Speaker 13: Guy who is such discipline in his process.
- 39:20Speaker 16: I mean he's so steady and consistent in our building
- 39:23Speaker 16: and day and day out, you won't even.
- 39:25Speaker 13: Know he's around.
- 39:26Speaker 16: I mean he's it's not like he's the loudest guy
- 39:28Speaker 16: in the room. It's not like he's looking for the attention.
- 39:30Speaker 16: I mean he just he.
- 39:32Speaker 13: Sits front and center of every team meeting.
- 39:33Speaker 16: He's right in front of me every time after practice
- 39:36Speaker 16: on a knee, locked in and focused.
- 39:39Speaker 13: He carries my message to the team.
- 39:41Speaker 16: He builds confidence in the locker room by making subtle
- 39:44Speaker 16: connections with players and creating closeness that way. But when
- 39:50Speaker 16: he crosses the lines, he just has a swagger about
- 39:54Speaker 16: him and it's infectious. Everyone sees it and believes in it,
- 39:58Speaker 16: and you use the word dog, like he's a dog
- 40:02Speaker 16: you want the ball on his hands in critical moments.
- 40:05Speaker 16: He's proven throughout his career and certainly in his time
- 40:09Speaker 16: here that every time he takes a.
- 40:11Speaker 13: Snap, you have a chance to win. So we're glad
- 40:13Speaker 13: he's on our team.
- 40:14Speaker 16: And for me personally, I mean, this guy represent everything
- 40:17Speaker 16: I want this program to be about. And he's helping
- 40:20Speaker 16: us put a product on the field that's fun and
- 40:22Speaker 16: exciting and and you know.
- 40:25Speaker 13: He gets a lot of credit and he should. I
- 40:28Speaker 13: think that.
- 40:30Speaker 16: You know, the other guys that are playing alongside him
- 40:32Speaker 16: have done a really good job, especially in our front,
- 40:35Speaker 16: to open up space receivers, blocking down field. We just
- 40:38Speaker 16: have such a different competitive makeup offensively and defensively right now.
- 40:43Speaker 13: That's helping us find ways to win.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Only got a couple of minutes love with you, and
- 40:47Speaker 1: we appreciate you fitting a sin because everybody wants to
- 40:49Speaker 1: talk to you.
- 40:49Speaker 3: Bell of the ball is what I would say. Got
- 40:51Speaker 3: you are the bell of the ball right now. How
- 40:53Speaker 3: in the world.
- 40:54Speaker 1: And I know you're going to find a way to
- 40:56Speaker 1: do it. But Kentucky, you have Kentucky coming up. I mean,
- 40:58Speaker 1: this is the big subs that I've seen in maybe
- 41:01Speaker 1: my life one of them. But how in the world
- 41:03Speaker 1: do you get your guys to forward face now after
- 41:06Speaker 1: being celebrated like so mightily over the last couple of days.
- 41:09Speaker 16: Yeah, I think the real challenge is that the celebration
- 41:12Speaker 16: won't stop. You know, we internally we've turned the page.
- 41:14Speaker 16: Yesterday we got to work on Kentucky. So now we
- 41:17Speaker 16: took time to enjoy in the team meeting, just kind
- 41:21Speaker 16: of the fruits of our labor. You know, put some
- 41:23Speaker 16: clips on film that I felt like showed the toughness
- 41:26Speaker 16: we played with, celebrated players of the game, so on
- 41:29Speaker 16: and so forth. But you know, we've we've made it clear,
- 41:34Speaker 16: and by the time we were leaving practice last night,
- 41:38Speaker 16: you know, there's no room internally for us to you know,
- 41:42Speaker 16: we you know, we burned the game and release it
- 41:44Speaker 16: to our past.
- 41:45Speaker 13: It's over. Every ounce of our mental.
- 41:48Speaker 16: Energy needs to be focused on our next opponent, which
- 41:51Speaker 16: is Kentucky, which is a really good SEC team.
- 41:54Speaker 13: It's a tough team on defense.
- 41:55Speaker 16: It's a team that knows how to run the football
- 41:57Speaker 16: and has exposive playmakers on the perimeter. And you know,
- 42:01Speaker 16: Mark Stoops is the consummate program builder, and they've always
- 42:05Speaker 16: been a tough out and they are going to be
- 42:08Speaker 16: ready for us. I'm sure you know they're talking about
- 42:12Speaker 16: the last time we went up there, which was twenty
- 42:13Speaker 16: twenty two, and we were able to pull off a win.
- 42:16Speaker 16: Last year at our home stadium, we spotted them twenty
- 42:19Speaker 16: one points all turnovers, which is a brutal way to play,
- 42:24Speaker 16: and you know, we have a lot to prove in
- 42:26Speaker 16: this game. I think inevitably, right our kids are going
- 42:31Speaker 16: to class today and they're going to meet high fives
- 42:34Speaker 16: and congratulations on campus. Inevitably, there's going to be positive
- 42:39Speaker 16: noise surrounding this program, which I think certainly can be
- 42:43Speaker 16: a great thing. But we have to maintain the mental
- 42:45Speaker 16: focus and discipline to realize that we can be respectful
- 42:49Speaker 16: to all the people that are again celebrating the You know,
- 42:54Speaker 16: what we put on film on Saturday and what we
- 42:57Speaker 16: put on display, But Saturday only matters now, and we'll
- 43:02Speaker 16: only understand the meeting of Saturday from reflection at the
- 43:04Speaker 16: end of the season. It only matters if we're able
- 43:06Speaker 16: to leverage it and pull momentum from it, and that
- 43:09Speaker 16: means that we have to get back in our process
- 43:12Speaker 16: and attack this process with commitment and energy so that
- 43:16Speaker 16: we can be ready to play a good game against
- 43:19Speaker 16: a really tough opponent on Saturday.
- 43:21Speaker 1: Last ten seconds of this interview, we're gonna clap for me.
- 43:23Speaker 3: Yes, how we end it right here, let's go.
- 43:28Speaker 1: I'm super happy for you, coach, super happy to see
- 43:30Speaker 1: like the culture. I mean, it's a Cultures are like
- 43:33Speaker 1: humongous boats. It doesn't matter the industry. It's like, yeah,
- 43:36Speaker 1: it takes a while to turn it. It's not like
- 43:38Speaker 1: a little car. It's a big old ship. And watching
- 43:41Speaker 1: what you're able to do and what you're doing is
- 43:42Speaker 1: really really been fun and motivating, even for myself. So
- 43:46Speaker 1: congratulations coach Man, thank you for the for the time
- 43:48Speaker 1: this morning.
- 43:49Speaker 13: A great to be with you. Bobby always Man coach.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Next up is Eli drink Witz from the University of Missouri.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Coach drink was a season ticket holder at the University
- 43:58Speaker 1: of Arkansas and now just enjoys trolling the University of Arkansas.
- 44:03Speaker 1: And I'm an Arkansas fan and had not been able
- 44:05Speaker 1: to spend a little time with coach drink Witz and
- 44:07Speaker 1: talkt to Coach drink here, I would be annoyed too,
- 44:09Speaker 1: but I respect the troll game. But I love who
- 44:12Speaker 1: he is. I'm a big fan.
- 44:13Speaker 9: That was a fun interview, just that's the way you
- 44:15Speaker 9: guys interact with each other.
- 44:16Speaker 1: We also had to cut the first part of it off.
- 44:17Speaker 1: If you guys remember he said some stuff at the
- 44:19Speaker 1: very beginning. Yeah, he didn't ask us to remove it,
- 44:21Speaker 1: but I felt it was better for all instead of
- 44:23Speaker 1: a few clicks that we just eliminate that because he
- 44:26Speaker 1: went after another SEC coach and I thought, I don't
- 44:30Speaker 1: know if he knew we were recording, but just in case.
- 44:35Speaker 1: So yeah, Coach Drink's awesome. Zara had a pretty good year.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Didn't meet the expectations I think that they had on
- 44:42Speaker 1: them at the beginning of the year as they were
- 44:44Speaker 1: you know, I thought to be putting the CFP, but
- 44:46Speaker 1: here he is coach Drink from Missouri. Let me ask
- 44:49Speaker 1: about bye weeks because I know what why players like
- 44:51Speaker 1: bye weeks?
- 44:52Speaker 3: Why do coaches like bye weeks? What will you do differently?
- 44:54Speaker 17: First off, you get to just take a deep breath.
- 44:57Speaker 11: You don't have this constant churning in your stomach like
- 45:00Speaker 11: you know you got something on Saturday. It's going to
- 45:02Speaker 11: determine the happiness of about six and a half million people,
- 45:06Speaker 11: including yourself, and you get to kind of be normal.
- 45:09Speaker 11: Like my daughter had a volleyball game last night, and
- 45:13Speaker 11: so I got to go pick her up from the game.
- 45:14Speaker 11: When the bus got back. I'll get to go watch
- 45:17Speaker 11: my daughter's T ball games on Thursday night. Saturday, another
- 45:22Speaker 11: daughter's got two volleyball games in the morning, so you
- 45:25Speaker 11: got you just kind of get a sense of normalcy,
- 45:28Speaker 11: and it's just a little bit of.
- 45:30Speaker 17: A time to take a deep breath.
- 45:32Speaker 11: I think from a football standpoint, you can actually work
- 45:36Speaker 11: on things.
- 45:37Speaker 17: You know, it's easy to say.
- 45:38Speaker 11: Hey, we got to get better this week, but when
- 45:41Speaker 11: there's a game coming and you have all this game
- 45:43Speaker 11: planning stuff you have to do, there's not a whole
- 45:45Speaker 11: lot of just moments where you can focus on fundamentals
- 45:48Speaker 11: and improvement because you've got to get the schemes in
- 45:50Speaker 11: for that week.
- 45:51Speaker 17: You've got to get the preparation in.
- 45:54Speaker 11: But in a bye week, again, you don't have an
- 45:55Speaker 11: opponent on Saturday, that opponent yourself, so there's really more
- 45:58Speaker 11: time to focus on on Hey, this twenty minutes of
- 46:01Speaker 11: practice is going to be specific to getting better. Five
- 46:05Speaker 11: minutes on third downs, five minutes on team run five
- 46:07Speaker 11: minutes on motion adjustments.
- 46:09Speaker 14: So that's probably the best thing about it.
- 46:12Speaker 3: Are you the bell of the ball in Columbia? Can
- 46:14Speaker 3: you grocery shop?
- 46:17Speaker 13: Yeah?
- 46:17Speaker 17: I can grocery shop. You find it funny?
- 46:20Speaker 11: The other day I was driving my car to stop
- 46:23Speaker 11: light and there were two college aged students who had
- 46:27Speaker 11: their phone up next to the window taking a picture,
- 46:30Speaker 11: and I just looked at him and was like, if
- 46:32Speaker 11: you'll just tell me, I'll smile for the picture. I'm
- 46:34Speaker 11: always worried that they're going to catch me picking my
- 46:36Speaker 11: nose or something while I'm driving or singing to myself
- 46:41Speaker 11: in the car, but I'll say this, I don't let
- 46:45Speaker 11: it affect me one way or the other. I just
- 46:47Speaker 11: know I got to wear a hat when I go
- 46:48Speaker 11: to the grocery store instead of going all wild and free.
- 46:52Speaker 1: I had a call or call the show and they
- 46:53Speaker 1: were doing a paper on grit and she was like
- 46:57Speaker 1: she got through the phone lines and she said, hey,
- 46:59Speaker 1: would you talk about what you think grit is? And
- 47:03Speaker 1: I think my career has been mostly based off perseverance, right,
- 47:06Speaker 1: like not doing a very good job and getting up
- 47:08Speaker 1: again and doing it a little better and a little
- 47:10Speaker 1: better because I've naturally not been that gifted at anything.
- 47:13Speaker 1: How would you define grit and who are a couple
- 47:15Speaker 1: of your grittiest players?
- 47:18Speaker 6: Man?
- 47:18Speaker 11: I love that you asked this question. Gritz the stubborn
- 47:20Speaker 11: refusal to quit. I mean, that's all it is. It's
- 47:22Speaker 11: just you refuse to give up, and it's passion plus
- 47:26Speaker 11: perseverance over time, Like what are you willing to endure
- 47:30Speaker 11: to accomplish what you want to accomplish. I think Brady
- 47:33Speaker 11: obviously is a great example of grit. I think Cody
- 47:36Speaker 11: Schrader last year was an extreme example of grit. I
- 47:39Speaker 11: think when you look at this year's running backs, Marcus Carroll,
- 47:42Speaker 11: Nate Noel, those two guys are really gritty players who
- 47:44Speaker 11: had to overcome a lot and bet on themselves, refuse
- 47:47Speaker 11: to give in to the outside noise to achieve what
- 47:51Speaker 11: they want to achieve. I think Johnny Walker defensive end
- 47:55Speaker 11: for me, came in at one hundred and ninety seven pounds,
- 47:58Speaker 11: had four wisdom te t taking out within the first
- 48:01Speaker 11: week of him being here, and now he weighs two
- 48:03Speaker 11: hundred and fifty six pounds.
- 48:04Speaker 17: Was the MVP of the Cotton Bowl.
- 48:06Speaker 11: It took him four years to really earn significant playing time.
- 48:09Speaker 11: But instead of pouting, instead of trying to go into
- 48:13Speaker 11: a different situation, he just said, I'm going to sustain
- 48:17Speaker 11: excellence every day, and that's really what.
- 48:20Speaker 13: You have to do.
- 48:21Speaker 14: You know, we have.
- 48:22Speaker 11: We had a group of Navy Seals come in and
- 48:24Speaker 11: they said winning is reserved for those who are willing
- 48:27Speaker 11: to pay the price. And that's kind of our thought
- 48:31Speaker 11: process this year, like what price are we willing to
- 48:33Speaker 11: pay to win? And you've got to be willing to
- 48:36Speaker 11: outlast people. You've got to be willing to sustain it
- 48:40Speaker 11: even when it's not going your way.
- 48:43Speaker 5: Coach, at the end of the game, you know, I
- 48:44Speaker 5: see the two coaches go and they meet each other.
- 48:46Speaker 5: What can you possibly tell each other, especially if you've
- 48:50Speaker 5: lost the game, Like what's that conversation like? Or do
- 48:53Speaker 5: you are you thinking? Like what am I going to
- 48:54Speaker 5: tell him? As I walk up there?
- 48:57Speaker 11: You know, I've had some awkward conversations with the head
- 48:59Speaker 11: coaches across the deal. Honestly, you know, when you're the
- 49:06Speaker 11: winning coach and you're going across the field to the
- 49:09Speaker 11: guy who's lost, you realize and know.
- 49:12Speaker 17: How much pain they're in right then, and really.
- 49:15Speaker 11: All I'm trying to do is give them some some
- 49:17Speaker 11: sort of like comfort or something, because man, the hardest
- 49:22Speaker 11: thing to do is to swallow all your emotions and
- 49:25Speaker 11: then go in there and address your team. So that's
- 49:29Speaker 11: really what I'm doing. Whenever, whenever they're they're saying something
- 49:33Speaker 11: to me after they're whipping my butt, it's usually as
- 49:36Speaker 11: quick as I can just shake their hand and try
- 49:38Speaker 11: to gather my thoughts and emotions before I address the team.
- 49:41Speaker 11: But you know, I have such a tremendous amount of
- 49:43Speaker 11: respect for the head coaches in this league. You know,
- 49:46Speaker 11: it's a it's a fraternity of really good men, and
- 49:51Speaker 11: you know, we don't always get along, we don't always
- 49:53Speaker 11: agree with each other, but there is a level of
- 49:55Speaker 11: respect there. And so you know, when you get a
- 49:58Speaker 11: chance to visit with another SEC head coach, you always
- 50:01Speaker 11: treat it with a little bit of respect.
- 50:03Speaker 1: I think a bit the pre game would be awkward
- 50:06Speaker 1: if you're expected to talk and you don't really like
- 50:08Speaker 1: them or know them. Like we have guests in studio
- 50:10Speaker 1: and there there are you know, celebrities that either I
- 50:12Speaker 1: don't like or I don't know them. We have to
- 50:14Speaker 1: like do small talk for like six minutes before this,
- 50:17Speaker 1: and that's torture for me, and I got to imagine
- 50:21Speaker 1: just the human nature of it there. That's probably the
- 50:23Speaker 1: same situation. So the pre more than the post. The
- 50:25Speaker 1: post you can get out over. But the do you
- 50:28Speaker 1: have to go talk to the other head coach before
- 50:29Speaker 1: the game?
- 50:30Speaker 14: Well apparently you don't have to.
- 50:31Speaker 11: Ed Or Doron didn't come shake my hand before the
- 50:33Speaker 11: first time we played them, and that was really the first.
- 50:35Speaker 17: Time and only time I've ever had that happen, So.
- 50:38Speaker 14: I guess you don't have to.
- 50:39Speaker 1: Are you're supposed like that's the thing you're supposed to like.
- 50:41Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean it's kind of a you know, it's
- 50:43Speaker 11: kind of a sportsmanship deal. I tell you when I
- 50:46Speaker 11: come into that the most is when you have to
- 50:48Speaker 11: do the Friday pre game media because there are some
- 50:51Speaker 11: media that you know, have been taking shots at you
- 50:54Speaker 11: or you know, shots at your team, and then you
- 50:57Speaker 11: got to go sit there and act like you're going
- 50:59Speaker 11: to be anybody and give them all the information that
- 51:01Speaker 11: they want to ask. So that one's always the one
- 51:05Speaker 11: that you're like.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, final question, coach, if you're struggling emotionally mentally,
- 51:12Speaker 1: who professionally can you call who's your mentor.
- 51:17Speaker 11: Well, you know, there's a couple of different people that
- 51:20Speaker 11: I can reach out to.
- 51:21Speaker 17: From a spiritual standpoint, there's.
- 51:23Speaker 11: A guy in Boone, North Carolina named doctor Dick Furman
- 51:26Speaker 11: who's been a really a person of great character and
- 51:31Speaker 11: integrity for me for the last six years, and.
- 51:35Speaker 17: The highest of highs I can expect to get a
- 51:36Speaker 17: text from him that says.
- 51:37Speaker 11: T y L which stands for thank you Lord, or
- 51:40Speaker 11: the lowest the lows I can get a text from that.
- 51:42Speaker 11: It's going to say thank you Lord, because you just
- 51:44Speaker 11: realize that you're blessed to get the opportunity to do this,
- 51:46Speaker 11: and you realize that your future is in his hands
- 51:49Speaker 11: and not to get caught up in the anxiety of it.
- 51:52Speaker 11: From a coaching standpoint, you know, coach Malson's obviously a
- 51:56Speaker 11: guy that I can reach out to that we exchange
- 51:58Speaker 11: ideas back and forth from.
- 52:01Speaker 14: So there's just different people like that.
- 52:03Speaker 11: But in the but in those two situations, those would
- 52:07Speaker 11: probably be the first two phone calls. You know, sometimes
- 52:10Speaker 11: I'm not quite as quick to call Gus because you know,
- 52:13Speaker 11: he's still the guy that I ga Ford, So he'll
- 52:16Speaker 11: tell me that that's pretty dumb.
- 52:19Speaker 14: What is your problem here?
- 52:20Speaker 7: Man?
- 52:21Speaker 14: But that's good to keep me humple.
- 52:23Speaker 3: Coach, good to see you.
- 52:25Speaker 1: We talked about coach drink Fro Missouri being like hey,
- 52:28Speaker 1: and he's saying all this stuff and we edited him out.
- 52:31Speaker 1: Brett bielamaf Milanoy, who also is right on the verge
- 52:33Speaker 1: of making college football playoff like he got in the
- 52:35Speaker 1: mix with Lane Kiffin when Kiffin was like, we're nine
- 52:37Speaker 1: and three, we should get in and Bilama wasn't serious
- 52:41Speaker 1: about them deserving a shot in, but he's like, if
- 52:43Speaker 1: that's your logic, well here's ours, and it's better than yours.
- 52:45Speaker 13: Love it.
- 52:46Speaker 1: And so coach Beelam was awesome. I know coach Bilama
- 52:49Speaker 1: a bet from when he was at Arkansas. Now, what
- 52:51Speaker 1: happened with this one was he did not know we
- 52:53Speaker 1: were recording. But because we don't have good radio voices,
- 52:57Speaker 1: no one ever knows we're recording that. They were just
- 52:58Speaker 1: talking to them and he did I'd say some stuff
- 53:01Speaker 1: and they reached out and said, would you guys mind
- 53:03Speaker 1: removing that He didn't know you're recording, and we were
- 53:05Speaker 1: like one step ahead of you once they're already on it. Yes,
- 53:09Speaker 1: made his name at wisconstantly crushed, went to Arkansas, has
- 53:11Speaker 1: turned the Illinois program around, big contenders. Coach Bilima one
- 53:14Speaker 1: of the bigger personalities. Really great guy here he is
- 53:18Speaker 1: from University Villinois. Coach Brett B.
- 53:20Speaker 3: Lama, Hey, coach, how you doing, my friend, coach?
- 53:22Speaker 1: If you found it to be most effective to get
- 53:25Speaker 1: your guys used to loud cheering or music, because you've
- 53:28Speaker 1: done this a while, Like what's most effective in practice.
- 53:31Speaker 14: Still by far just the crowd noise in the stadium,
- 53:33Speaker 14: you know, just just putting it out there. I mean today, now,
- 53:36Speaker 14: what we do do here is I removed my defensive
- 53:41Speaker 14: coaches and players because I want it to be so
- 53:43Speaker 14: loud you can't really conduct the practice for the other
- 53:46Speaker 14: side of the ball because on offense, when we run
- 53:48Speaker 14: to play, we crank it and then we'll turn it down,
- 53:51Speaker 14: you know, in between while we want to correct it
- 53:53Speaker 14: and then they'll crank it way back up.
- 53:55Speaker 1: So is it ever so loud you cannot hear in
- 53:57Speaker 1: the in helmet communication?
- 54:00Speaker 14: Does you know? It does get loud?
- 54:02Speaker 7: Now?
- 54:02Speaker 14: We actually not a lot of teams are using them,
- 54:04Speaker 14: but there's actually muffs that you can put on your
- 54:07Speaker 14: helmet that our quarterback. You'll see our quarterback doesn't have
- 54:10Speaker 14: ear holes because we put a canceling device over his
- 54:14Speaker 14: ear hole. You'll see a lot of quarterbacks going like this,
- 54:16Speaker 14: that's because they don't have that device. But it really
- 54:20Speaker 14: for me, I've always wore double ear muffs. It's kind
- 54:22Speaker 14: of kind of like the movie Old School, Old Cool
- 54:28Speaker 14: ear muffs, earmuff Like, I always wear double ear muffs
- 54:32Speaker 14: because I just want to hear the voices that I
- 54:33Speaker 14: need to hear. But yeah, for a quarterback, it definitely
- 54:36Speaker 14: can be that way.
- 54:37Speaker 3: Coach, what's all my like in the locker room? What
- 54:39Speaker 3: kind of leaders?
- 54:40Speaker 13: You know?
- 54:41Speaker 14: What?
- 54:41Speaker 13: Bobby?
- 54:42Speaker 14: First off, you know, his dad was a team doctor
- 54:44Speaker 14: a Mississippi State, so he's been around college football his
- 54:48Speaker 14: whole life growing up, been around it, seeing it, lived it.
- 54:52Speaker 14: So his awareness to the to the world and college
- 54:55Speaker 14: football is really really high. His football IQ extremely gifted
- 55:00Speaker 14: ball awareness. He's also a tremendous kid of faith, so
- 55:03Speaker 14: like he's very fade driven. But it's not like these
- 55:06Speaker 14: guys that you know, come across preaching and teaching everything.
- 55:09Speaker 14: Like he's just a normal guy. He's very empowering, but
- 55:12Speaker 14: a and He's very deliberate in his relationships. He it's
- 55:15Speaker 14: not a guy that he's out in front screaming and
- 55:17Speaker 14: you own, like some quarterbacks.
- 55:18Speaker 7: Like.
- 55:18Speaker 14: He's a very relationship driven guy and just really exudes
- 55:23Speaker 14: confidence that carries over to every position.
- 55:25Speaker 1: I'm want to ask a really dumb question because I
- 55:27Speaker 1: just don't know the answer. Is there food at halftime
- 55:30Speaker 1: in the locker room?
- 55:30Speaker 9: A good question?
- 55:31Speaker 14: Oh yeah, yeah?
- 55:33Speaker 3: Like and how much did someone eat?
- 55:35Speaker 14: Well? Even even going back to my time at Arkansas.
- 55:37Speaker 14: You know, so Ben Herbert, who was my strength coach there,
- 55:40Speaker 14: we kind of developed it when I was at Wisconsin.
- 55:43Speaker 14: He's done with the Chargers out there with hardball, but
- 55:45Speaker 14: we do a lot of PB and j's to do
- 55:47Speaker 14: anything that has a high nutritional value to give energy.
- 55:50Speaker 14: You know, some kids just really don't want to eat
- 55:52Speaker 14: on game day. So what we try to do is
- 55:54Speaker 14: override any issues we might have with high energy protein
- 55:59Speaker 14: content in shakes and snacks.
- 56:03Speaker 13: Right.
- 56:03Speaker 14: So there's there's also a lot of gummies like good gummies, right,
- 56:07Speaker 14: gummies that are for the purpose of nutrition and anything
- 56:12Speaker 14: that can peak their performance. We actually have a nutritional
- 56:15Speaker 14: crew that will pre make and set up maybe probably
- 56:20Speaker 14: about half our roster at halftime where they'll slam a
- 56:23Speaker 14: shake that they pre ordered, they love, and we just
- 56:26Speaker 14: want to get calories in them. So it's a it's
- 56:27Speaker 14: a very specific thing. Yeah, it's a lot different. Back
- 56:30Speaker 14: when I was in school, we had chicken broth that
- 56:32Speaker 14: was our high heightened during the cold games once in
- 56:36Speaker 14: a while. But yeah, the nutrition factor into performance is
- 56:40Speaker 14: at a it's and I'm sure it's soon. It's going
- 56:42Speaker 14: to continue to get better, but it's at a high
- 56:44Speaker 14: level now that that's the way. I'm not exactly a
- 56:46Speaker 14: walking dictionary of nutrition. So like that that's in their world.
- 56:50Speaker 5: Coach, you fly off for your job, What kind of
- 56:52Speaker 5: flyer are you? You put headphones on, you listen to music,
- 56:55Speaker 5: you do work, you read, Like, what do you do
- 56:57Speaker 5: on a flight?
- 56:58Speaker 14: Yeah, you know, we got a pretty long flight going
- 57:00Speaker 14: out here to Oregon. So we'll actually practice Thursday morning
- 57:03Speaker 14: and leave Thursday afternoon, so I'll watch Thursday's practice. I
- 57:06Speaker 14: actually got it one of if you've seen them, but
- 57:08Speaker 14: it's the there are glasses that you plug into your
- 57:11Speaker 14: computer and then they I don't have to be looking down.
- 57:13Speaker 14: I can lay back and I've had the video and
- 57:17Speaker 14: it's I got to remote in my hand, I can
- 57:19Speaker 14: watch that. It's just like I'm in front of a
- 57:21Speaker 14: big screen. It's it's I can read emails that way,
- 57:23Speaker 14: I can read articles, I can watch film. It's it's
- 57:26Speaker 14: and now I usually got a pair of headphones on,
- 57:28Speaker 14: listen to a little little country, little little R and B,
- 57:31Speaker 14: little little reggae. Kind of depends on.
- 57:33Speaker 3: The mood before a big game or any game.
- 57:36Speaker 1: Do you like your guys to be like right on
- 57:38Speaker 1: the edge, fired up or And we've had fighters that
- 57:40Speaker 1: we've talked to who will tell us they do not
- 57:42Speaker 1: like to be fired up because they're not thinking as
- 57:45Speaker 1: clearly that if they're calm, they're actually able to take
- 57:48Speaker 1: and navigate through their thoughts. Right, And there's a fine
- 57:50Speaker 1: line somewhere that's correct. Where do you stand on the
- 57:53Speaker 1: psychology of that going into a game or going into
- 57:55Speaker 1: a big game?
- 57:56Speaker 14: Well, I think first it's culturally based by what you
- 57:59Speaker 14: do kind of throughout the year, right, Like if you
- 58:01Speaker 14: try to go to uh, you know, the gate the
- 58:04Speaker 14: day of the game and try to figure your crew out,
- 58:06Speaker 14: you're going to have a long time coming, right. So
- 58:08Speaker 14: we try to get a pulse on this we build it.
- 58:10Speaker 14: I really call it that flip flop Friday. I kind
- 58:13Speaker 14: of relax on Fridays because I want to put our
- 58:14Speaker 14: guys at ease. I'm more comfortable, they're more comfortable, you know.
- 58:18Speaker 14: We do little things like we call we'll have a
- 58:21Speaker 14: lot of mandatory dinners, but we'll call it. We'll call
- 58:24Speaker 14: it mandatory flow, which means just kind of come and
- 58:26Speaker 14: go as you want. But then the last meal, we
- 58:28Speaker 14: have our last pregame meal, which is always fours out
- 58:31Speaker 14: four hours out before pre before the game. So if
- 58:34Speaker 14: we're playing at two o'clock, the meal is at ten o'clock,
- 58:36Speaker 14: we're at six o'clock, it's at two o'clock, and that
- 58:39Speaker 14: is everybody comes in mandatory seeded. We'll start off with
- 58:41Speaker 14: the prayer, you know, we have it regimented away. We
- 58:45Speaker 14: eat just to kind of begin to lock them in,
- 58:48Speaker 14: you know now. But then they'll go to their rooms
- 58:50Speaker 14: and I'll say, hey, go call text, FaceTime, whoever you
- 58:53Speaker 14: got to do. Let's get it out of the way.
- 58:54Speaker 14: So when you come down here two and a half
- 58:56Speaker 14: hours before kickoff, we know what we're doing, right, and
- 58:59Speaker 14: then we kind of a gras transition to being ready
- 59:02Speaker 14: to go. I think game day is totally different, Bobby
- 59:05Speaker 14: than practice. You know, in those moments, it's about it's
- 59:09Speaker 14: not what happens, it's how you react to what happens.
- 59:11Speaker 14: So if you have kids that are on edge because
- 59:13Speaker 14: they think they're going to be, you know, handled in
- 59:16Speaker 14: a way that's combative on game day, you're going to
- 59:17Speaker 14: have usually a bad result. So we're kind of a
- 59:20Speaker 14: kind of a in the moment, let's let's learn from
- 59:23Speaker 14: the moment, but move on.
- 59:25Speaker 1: Are you ever internally so emotional? But you're able to
- 59:28Speaker 1: have the thought I should not be outwardly emotional because
- 59:32Speaker 1: of how we'll make others feel A react like a kicker,
- 59:34Speaker 1: miss the kicker you like mother, But you've got.
- 59:37Speaker 3: To really dial it in and keep it in.
- 59:40Speaker 14: So true story. I think you evolve in time as
- 59:42Speaker 14: you get older, right, you learn more from your failures
- 59:45Speaker 14: than your successes. But I've always been a guy that
- 59:48Speaker 14: really just believes the teaching moments are all around us.
- 59:51Speaker 14: It's just a matter of what you want to teach, right,
- 59:53Speaker 14: And I came full circle. I was a young coach.
- 59:56Speaker 14: I'm probably in my second or third year. I've recruited
- 59:58Speaker 14: a kid by the name of James I, who was
- 1:00:01Speaker 14: a running back out of Saint Thomas Aquanas in Fort Lauerdale, Florida.
- 1:00:03Speaker 14: He went on to play for the Patriots for about
- 1:00:05Speaker 14: ten years, won several Super Bowls. He was a true freshman,
- 1:00:09Speaker 14: really good player for US. And he was making a
- 1:00:12Speaker 14: run and he reached the ball across the end zone
- 1:00:14Speaker 14: and I got punched out and created a touchback scenario.
- 1:00:17Speaker 14: And I literally was on the headset and everybody was like,
- 1:00:21Speaker 14: you can't do that, and I heard it. I said,
- 1:00:23Speaker 14: I told everybody, hey, shut up, I'll handle this moment right.
- 1:00:26Speaker 14: And I went over and he was on the bench
- 1:00:29Speaker 14: and I just put my hand on his head and
- 1:00:31Speaker 14: I leaned down by his knee and I said, hey,
- 1:00:33Speaker 14: my friend, you are such a great player. You are
- 1:00:36Speaker 14: going to score so many touchdowns in this stadium and
- 1:00:39Speaker 14: in your career, and you'll play beyond here. But just
- 1:00:43Speaker 14: know we're brought you here to run the ball, not
- 1:00:45Speaker 14: reach the ball. Right, There's three occasions that you can
- 1:00:48Speaker 14: reach the ball. Fourth down, two point plays in the
- 1:00:50Speaker 14: end of game. Right, Otherwise they're always staying and we'll
- 1:00:53Speaker 14: play the next down. And it came full circle. His dad,
- 1:00:59Speaker 14: I went on to the coach of the Patriots, and
- 1:01:01Speaker 14: his dad told me he watched it on TV. Right,
- 1:01:05Speaker 14: And then lo and behold his dad was killed in
- 1:01:09Speaker 14: a car accident, like a number of two years later, right.
- 1:01:13Speaker 14: And I think about the profound effect of that moment,
- 1:01:17Speaker 14: that teaching moment with that kid, to have a dad
- 1:01:21Speaker 14: witness it on TV and the life lesson that was
- 1:01:24Speaker 14: taught is truly why you do this job.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: At what point in your career, coach, did you realize
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: And I say this as someone who my high school
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: football coach, I didn't have a dad, was a big
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: part of my understanding of discipline, right, Like, because I
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: had no mal influence, I had no one.
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: At what point in your career did you realize that
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: you were going to be that?
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: And that was a real responsibility for a lot of
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: these kids.
- 1:01:46Speaker 14: It's a great point. I say it all the time.
- 1:01:48Speaker 14: We do a little presentation when I have a kid
- 1:01:50Speaker 14: come in my office that we've offered a scholarship to
- 1:01:52Speaker 14: or a visit. We talk about a timeline on this earth. Right,
- 1:01:57Speaker 14: we all start at zero and average age goes to
- 1:01:59Speaker 14: seventy two. Hopefully we all go beyond that. But we
- 1:02:01Speaker 14: talk about during that window. You know, I usually get
- 1:02:04Speaker 14: a kid when he's eighteen years old, right, And if
- 1:02:06Speaker 14: you just do the math, that's a twenty You know,
- 1:02:09Speaker 14: twenty five percent of your seventy two year lifeline is
- 1:02:13Speaker 14: already done before I got you. Right, So I'm going
- 1:02:16Speaker 14: to get you from eighteen twenty one twenty two, And
- 1:02:18Speaker 14: during that four year window, it's the first time you're
- 1:02:21Speaker 14: out of your environment that you've known your whole life. Right, Like,
- 1:02:25Speaker 14: whether it's a parent, an uncle, a coach, a grandpa,
- 1:02:28Speaker 14: I get everything right, like I have step parents, whatever
- 1:02:30Speaker 14: it is. And I always tell our kids, like, listen,
- 1:02:34Speaker 14: I don't want to be your dad, you already got one.
- 1:02:36Speaker 14: I don't want to be your uncle or your brother,
- 1:02:37Speaker 14: your cousin, your friend, or your high school coach. I
- 1:02:40Speaker 14: want to be the best college coach you could ever have.
- 1:02:42Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:02:42Speaker 14: And because of that, I'm going to at times sound
- 1:02:45Speaker 14: like a parent. I'm going to at times tell you
- 1:02:48Speaker 14: things you don't want to hear, right, And I would
- 1:02:50Speaker 14: tell you the more I tell you things, especially if
- 1:02:53Speaker 14: you don't agree with them, it's because I love you,
- 1:02:55Speaker 14: not because I hate you. Too many people in this world,
- 1:02:58Speaker 14: like try to tell them the things they want to
- 1:02:59Speaker 14: hear and avoid to the things they need to hear.
- 1:03:02Speaker 14: So I think that's a really big part of coaching
- 1:03:04Speaker 14: is you're going to sound like a parent a lot.
- 1:03:06Speaker 14: The good news is they're not right. But the part
- 1:03:10Speaker 14: that is real is that you can affect their life
- 1:03:12Speaker 14: for a long time and probably in a time in
- 1:03:14Speaker 14: their life where they need it more than ever.
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: All right, coach, good luck, We love you, buddy, take care.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: It's the most wonderful time of the year for getting

- 1:04:20Speaker 1: Now onto Kansas State head coach Chris Clemon, which we've
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: had on a few times. We got to go hang
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: out with him in his office. That's pretty cool. I
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: think on his birthday too, it was, oh, yeah, we're like,
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: happy birthday, you get us right, Happy birthday. That's funny.
- 1:04:33Speaker 6: Uh so.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: And he also let us work out with Cooper bb And, who.
- 1:04:37Speaker 9: Is now a Dallas cowboy.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and you'd have a problem with it because I
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: knew he he probably knew we wouldn't hurt Cooper BB. Yeah,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: of course, like these idiots, but yeah, I know Kansas
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: State like Perennial in the mix. Now, we love Coach Climbing.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: And here's our talk with him. His dad was a coach.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: We talked about that a bunch two with him in
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: the full interview. So here he is from Kansas State.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: Here is coach Chris Climbing. Hey, coach, good to see you.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: Thank you for the time. How you doing, Hey, pretty good.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: I do want to go back a year or so
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: we were working out with Cooper BB when we were up
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: there with you guys.
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: You keep up with Cooper at all with Cowboys.
- 1:05:10Speaker 18: Absolutely, he's come back for at least two games, but no,
- 1:05:16Speaker 18: probably weekly. We send a text back and forth. Super
- 1:05:19Speaker 18: proud of him being the starting center in the NFL.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: Man crazy too because and Cooper and I follow each
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: other on Instagram since then, and when he was drafted, obviously,
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: super pumped for him. But the transition, and maybe you
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: could add a little of this, the transition because he
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: did not play center for you, but now he's playing
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: center with the Cowboys. How hard is that to do
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: on the offensive line?
- 1:05:40Speaker 18: It's really hard. But the fact that he played all
- 1:05:44Speaker 18: four positions, but that I think lent himself to understanding
- 1:05:50Speaker 18: all the positions and knew that he could because he
- 1:05:53Speaker 18: was the guy that communicated all of our checks and
- 1:05:57Speaker 18: adjustments and IDs and stuff. Anyway, and all along when
- 1:06:02Speaker 18: he was here and continue to get better and better,
- 1:06:04Speaker 18: people kept asking us, do you think he can be
- 1:06:06Speaker 18: a center? Do you think he can be a center? Well, yeah,
- 1:06:09Speaker 18: we did from a mental side of things. Now from
- 1:06:11Speaker 18: a physical side of things. He just had to put
- 1:06:13Speaker 18: the time into it. And obviously he did that because
- 1:06:17Speaker 18: to make that transition and be the start, be named
- 1:06:19Speaker 18: the starter by week one was pretty remarkable.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: So teams were reaching out to you to ask if
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: they if you thought, like his mental capacity was that
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: of a center. Some more so, was it his size?
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: Like why were teams looking at him as a center.
- 1:06:34Speaker 18: All the fact that he's not six foot six and
- 1:06:38Speaker 18: six ' five and stuff. He's a you know, I
- 1:06:39Speaker 18: don't know what is he six three and a half
- 1:06:40Speaker 18: six ' four. And they knew he would be an
- 1:06:45Speaker 18: interior guy somewhere. And the center position is so valuable,
- 1:06:49Speaker 18: so hard to find that when you have somebody with
- 1:06:52Speaker 18: the acumen that he has of understanding the game and
- 1:06:55Speaker 18: understanding defensive fronts and being able to communicate. I thought
- 1:07:00Speaker 18: it was going to be a natural for him to
- 1:07:02Speaker 18: be able to move inside there. Then he just had
- 1:07:04Speaker 18: to work on the physical side of getting the snaps
- 1:07:07Speaker 18: and movement, and I knew he could do it because
- 1:07:10Speaker 18: he's such a great athlete too.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: Is there ever a time with a player when you
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: will modify a bit of how they play or what
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: they do for the next level, even though it may
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: not be completely advantageous to what you're doing right then.
- 1:07:25Speaker 18: Not completely, But I also have a responsibility to give
- 1:07:30Speaker 18: these guys the best opportunity to have success at that
- 1:07:34Speaker 18: next level and if it can fit with what we're
- 1:07:37Speaker 18: doing as a team.
- 1:07:38Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:07:39Speaker 18: Absolutely. We had a guy that actually started for the
- 1:07:44Speaker 18: Bucks the other night named Josh Hays. He's a safety
- 1:07:48Speaker 18: slash corner and I had him at North Zakota State
- 1:07:51Speaker 18: and he was a corner and then we got him
- 1:07:54Speaker 18: out of the transfer portal to come here and he
- 1:07:57Speaker 18: assumed he was going to play corner and I said, Josh,
- 1:07:59Speaker 18: we're going to play you safety here. A. It's going
- 1:08:02Speaker 18: to help us be a better team, but B, I
- 1:08:04Speaker 18: think it's going to market you better in the NFL
- 1:08:07Speaker 18: because you're not a six foot three guy that's two
- 1:08:10Speaker 18: hundred and fifteen pounds. That's a corner that a lot
- 1:08:12Speaker 18: of the teams are looking for. Josh is a six foot,
- 1:08:15Speaker 18: one hundred and ninety five pound kid. And I said,
- 1:08:18Speaker 18: if you can cover slot guys, you're going to have
- 1:08:20Speaker 18: a place in the NFL. So it's not only going
- 1:08:22Speaker 18: to help our team, but it's going to help your
- 1:08:25Speaker 18: draft status.
- 1:08:26Speaker 14: And they up getting.
- 1:08:26Speaker 18: Drafted maybe in the fourth or fifth round by the Bucks.
- 1:08:29Speaker 18: And I think he's in his third year now and
- 1:08:32Speaker 18: now he's a starter for him. But his ability to
- 1:08:36Speaker 18: move and showcase what he could do as a safety
- 1:08:39Speaker 18: rather than a corner helped us as a team and.
- 1:08:42Speaker 13: Helped him in the draft.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: What's Avery Johnson like as a dude?
- 1:08:46Speaker 18: Gosh, A, he's awesome. He's so much fun to be around.
- 1:08:52Speaker 18: He's the unquestioned leader on the offense, but he's very confident,
- 1:08:58Speaker 18: has some swagger, but he's not a cocky kid. He's
- 1:09:02Speaker 18: a guy that you know the room lights up when
- 1:09:05Speaker 18: he comes in, but he doesn't want that, if that
- 1:09:10Speaker 18: makes sense. He doesn't want to be the center of attention.
- 1:09:13Speaker 18: He's just always going to be Some of it is
- 1:09:14Speaker 18: his hair, right, He's going to be the center of
- 1:09:16Speaker 18: attention because of his hair. But he's a very humble,
- 1:09:23Speaker 18: driven kid that what people don't see about Avery is
- 1:09:27Speaker 18: all the things that he does in our community for youth,
- 1:09:30Speaker 18: for disability, children, for people in need. I know he's
- 1:09:37Speaker 18: helping a principle back home that was diagnosed with cancer,
- 1:09:40Speaker 18: of raising money. Those are the things that he's not
- 1:09:43Speaker 18: putting out on social media, but maybe should be emphasized
- 1:09:47Speaker 18: a little bit more because it's.
- 1:09:48Speaker 14: Not just about the football.
- 1:09:49Speaker 13: The football is just a very small part of his life.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: When you look for a leader, like what are those qualities?
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: And the leadership qualities can be very different. I mean
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: we have them even here amongst this organization. Like what
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: are the qualities that you see in leaders that you
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: feel like go best with your program?
- 1:10:10Speaker 18: For starters that have to be able to hold themselves accountable,
- 1:10:14Speaker 18: it's always easy to say the best player and the
- 1:10:16Speaker 18: work ethic and his last one off the field and
- 1:10:20Speaker 18: the first one on the field. You know, those are
- 1:10:22Speaker 18: the things that people I think think about, but I
- 1:10:26Speaker 18: think of it as one he's one that holds himself
- 1:10:28Speaker 18: accountable and he's not going to talk to talk unless
- 1:10:34Speaker 18: he can walk the walk. And we have a kid
- 1:10:37Speaker 18: named Austin Moore that's one of our captains that epitomizes
- 1:10:41Speaker 18: what a what a leader is and what I call
- 1:10:44Speaker 18: when I say a leader, he's a servant leader. In effect,
- 1:10:47Speaker 18: he makes everybody around him better because of his presence.
- 1:10:51Speaker 18: And the best leaders are ones that really don't care
- 1:10:59Speaker 18: if at the end of day, we're going to be
- 1:11:00Speaker 18: best friends for the next forty years, you're going to
- 1:11:03Speaker 18: respect me because I'm going to hold myself accountable, but
- 1:11:07Speaker 18: I'm not going to be afraid to hold you accountable.
- 1:11:09Speaker 18: And you know, in our sport, in college, kids have three,
- 1:11:14Speaker 18: four or five years to make a legacy, and you
- 1:11:18Speaker 18: can make a ton of friends, and you're already going
- 1:11:20Speaker 18: to make a ton of friends. But the only way
- 1:11:21Speaker 18: you're going to make a legacy is if you have success.
- 1:11:24Speaker 18: And the only way you're going to have success is
- 1:11:27Speaker 18: by holding your peers accountable. And that's what I find
- 1:11:32Speaker 18: in the best leaders is they can hold themselves accountable.
- 1:11:35Speaker 18: They can walk the walk, but they are not afraid
- 1:11:38Speaker 18: to call out their best friend, not afraid to call
- 1:11:41Speaker 18: out a teammate that is maybe equally as talented. It's
- 1:11:45Speaker 18: easy to call out the guys that maybe aren't as
- 1:11:47Speaker 18: good or don't do things.
- 1:11:48Speaker 13: The right way.
- 1:11:49Speaker 18: But when you can call out the other best players
- 1:11:52Speaker 18: and they respect you for it, that's the best sign
- 1:11:54Speaker 18: of leadership.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: I'm going to get in the weeds a little here
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: because I respect your entire career as a coach, what
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: you've built at every level. But I want to talk
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: about practice tape. So you're a practice, You're doing what
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: you do, you're ceoing, you're making sure that the macro
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: things are done right. Do you ever get on and
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: watch some tape and see somebody that maybe you did
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: not know was competing at a higher level than maybe
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: you wouldn't have caught if you didn't see it on tape.
- 1:12:21Speaker 18: One hundred percent. I do it every day, And not
- 1:12:25Speaker 18: only do you do, you have to do it, but
- 1:12:28Speaker 18: you have to recognize that individual or those individuals for
- 1:12:34Speaker 18: their efforts. And a simple thing would be we have
- 1:12:38Speaker 18: our Scout team Players of the Week every week, the
- 1:12:41Speaker 18: guys that aren't playing but gave us a chance to
- 1:12:44Speaker 18: be successful by the look that they gave us each
- 1:12:47Speaker 18: day that week that maybe we're down a defensive tackle
- 1:12:52Speaker 18: and he had to take every rep in practice for
- 1:12:54Speaker 18: the scout team or a linebacker whatever, maybe as well
- 1:12:57Speaker 18: as special teams. And I think it's important that not
- 1:13:01Speaker 18: only myself, but some of our best players thank those
- 1:13:07Speaker 18: guys and recognize those guys.
- 1:13:09Speaker 13: We have a neat deal that we do after wins in.
- 1:13:11Speaker 18: The locker room where we hand out a hammer because
- 1:13:15Speaker 18: we talked about pounding the stone all the time. We
- 1:13:17Speaker 18: hand out a hammer to somebody and then they get
- 1:13:20Speaker 18: to recognize somebody, and oftentimes it's a defensive lineman that
- 1:13:24Speaker 18: is recognizing Hey, Scout team offensive lineman so and so,
- 1:13:27Speaker 18: or Scout team wide receiver as a defensive back. Thank
- 1:13:31Speaker 18: you for pushing me this week, man, you made me better.
- 1:13:34Speaker 18: But I think you have to recognize those guys and
- 1:13:37Speaker 18: they have to know that they're a valued part of
- 1:13:40Speaker 18: your organization and program.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: I want to ask you about your dad for a second.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: What do you think you've taken from him, even if
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: you don't realize until you got older, that you had,
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: like as a.
- 1:13:49Speaker 18: Coach, competitiveness and toughness not even in question. My dad's
- 1:13:53Speaker 18: the toughest man I know. He's still at five years old.
- 1:14:00Speaker 18: Armchair quarterback I have.
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: Does he text you at all? And does he use emojis?
- 1:14:05Speaker 7: No? No, my dad wouldn't use an emoji.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: All right, Coach Sea, thank you, hey, thanks for listening.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: One of the really cool things about the show is
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: we can't believe people will agree to talk to us
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: that are like head coaches and major programs.
- 1:14:19Speaker 9: It's pretty amazing, pretty amazing. I know, do you think
- 1:14:21Speaker 9: we had anything to do with getting some of those
- 1:14:24Speaker 9: teams in there?
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: I really think we had maybe things to do with
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: some of the teams not getting in there, like, if anything,
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: we maybe hurricanes and stayed a little bit. Maybe let's
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: not give ourself credit, but thank you for listening. Super cool.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: We've had some other great coaches too. You can go
