- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome to pick up and deliver the podcast where I
- 0:06Speaker 1: pick up my audio recorders, I step off the train
- 0:08Speaker 1: and deliver an episode do you while I walk home.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I'm Brendan Riley. Well, good afternoon, listeners. It's a lovely
- 0:23Speaker 1: day here in suburban Chicago. I'm strolling home from the
- 0:26Speaker 1: train in the October sunny weather. It's a little warmer
- 0:30Speaker 1: than I would expect for late October, but very pleasant.
- 0:34Speaker 1: So today I thought I would talk to you about
- 0:36Speaker 1: three games that I've tried recently and let you know
- 0:39Speaker 1: what I thought of them.
- 0:41Speaker 2: That's right, it's time for a board Game Espresso Triple
- 0:44Speaker 2: Shot coffee up.
- 0:49Speaker 1: For those of you knew to the podcast, the Board
- 0:51Speaker 1: Game Espresso Triple Shot is a light review segment which
- 0:54Speaker 1: I comment for on my first impressions of three games.
- 0:58Speaker 2: I've tried recently.
- 1:00Speaker 1: For the first time, I will also add in one
- 1:03Speaker 1: other commentary on one other game. Like, for example, today
- 1:07Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about an expansion that I played recently.
- 1:10Speaker 1: All let's get into it. So the first game I
- 1:12Speaker 1: got to try is called A Fake Artist Goes to
- 1:14Speaker 1: New York. This is by Juhn Sasaki and published by
- 1:19Speaker 1: oinc Games. A Fake Artist Goes to New York made
- 1:22Speaker 1: a big splash when it was published in twenty eleven.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I remember hearing about it a lot in those first
- 1:27Speaker 1: couple of years after it came out. It's been a
- 1:29Speaker 1: perennial favorite from Oink Games, and it's a really clever
- 1:33Speaker 1: mechanism built around a solid model, which is finding the
- 1:38Speaker 1: one person who's deceptive. There are a number of different
- 1:41Speaker 1: games that involve people being deceptive in one way or another.
- 1:44Speaker 1: My favorite model of this game is Chameleon from Big
- 1:48Speaker 1: Potato Games. I don't remember who the designer is on
- 1:51Speaker 1: that one, but in Chameleon, you have a grid of
- 1:53Speaker 1: words on the table, and everybody around the table knows
- 1:58Speaker 1: which word is the secret word, but one person doesn't
- 2:01Speaker 1: know the secret word, and their goal is to hide
- 2:04Speaker 1: the fact that they don't know.
- 2:06Speaker 2: You also have this in Spyfall.
- 2:08Speaker 1: You have a bunch of locations and people ask each
- 2:10Speaker 1: other questions, and one person doesn't know.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Which location they're at or what they're doing there.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I can't remember exactly the thing, but Fake Artist Goes
- 2:17Speaker 1: to New York might be the most pure version of this.
- 2:21Speaker 1: In this game, a person whoever is in charge one
- 2:25Speaker 1: person is like the leader.
- 2:26Speaker 2: They're going to.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Write a word on each of several different little whiteboard
- 2:31Speaker 1: sheets and hand those out to the players. One of
- 2:35Speaker 1: the players will get a whiteboard sheet which, instead of
- 2:37Speaker 1: having the code word on it, just has an ex
- 2:39Speaker 1: written on there, and then everybody gets a different colored pen.
- 2:42Speaker 1: So the idea is you can always tell who drew
- 2:45Speaker 1: what based on the color pen that they have. And
- 2:50Speaker 1: then you get a tiny little pad of paper that
- 2:52Speaker 1: you pass around. So, starting with the person to the
- 2:54Speaker 1: left of the judge, each person is going to make
- 2:56Speaker 1: a little line or a set of lines to contribute
- 2:59Speaker 1: to the drawing of whatever it is that everyone's drawing.
- 3:02Speaker 1: So it might be a giraffe, it could be a pizza,
- 3:04Speaker 1: it could be I don't know whatever. The person who's
- 3:07Speaker 1: in charge wrote the thing on the blow wayboard, and
- 3:10Speaker 1: after the picture has gone around twice, everybody can look
- 3:13Speaker 1: at the little lines and say who they think didn't
- 3:16Speaker 1: know what was being drawn. Then the group votes if
- 3:19Speaker 1: they find the person who didn't know, that person can
- 3:22Speaker 1: steal the win by identifying the thing that they were drawing.
- 3:29Speaker 2: That's it.
- 3:30Speaker 1: That's the fake artist goes to New York. I've explained
- 3:33Speaker 1: the whole game to you. You could play it with you know,
- 3:35Speaker 1: if you have a copy of blank slate and a
- 3:37Speaker 1: bunch of different colored whiteboard markers, you could play it
- 3:40Speaker 1: that way or any other number of drawing games.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I'm not saying you should do that.
- 3:46Speaker 1: It's nice to support the artists and designer, but that's
- 3:49Speaker 1: the idea of Fake Artist goes to New York. The
- 3:51Speaker 1: game might heart about often and finally got to play
- 3:55Speaker 1: and it was worth it. I thought it was really fun.
- 3:57Speaker 1: The components, as usual with only games, tiny but nice
- 4:01Speaker 1: and they work just fine. So recommended if you get
- 4:04Speaker 1: a chance. Excellent little party game. Fake Artist goes to
- 4:08Speaker 1: New York.
- 4:08Speaker 3: All right.
- 4:09Speaker 1: The next game I played is called Master Daver. This
- 4:11Speaker 1: is from the Side nine and Happiness Crew and it
- 4:14Speaker 1: is a straight up party game. It uses a judging
- 4:17Speaker 1: model in which one player is the judge and everyone
- 4:19Speaker 1: else is submitting to their whims and the judge awards points.
- 4:25Speaker 2: The premise of the game is the player who's.
- 4:27Speaker 1: The judge is a sexy single and they have a
- 4:30Speaker 1: couple different criteria that they're looking for, and then the
- 4:33Speaker 1: other players submit messed up characters with different heads and
- 4:37Speaker 1: bodies and other traits that they then argue meet the criteria.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It's a sort of.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Halfway between straight up judge game like Apples to Apples
- 4:48Speaker 1: and a pitch game like Snake Oil, kind.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Of in between and frankly in line with.
- 4:54Speaker 1: The kind of games that Cyanide and Happiness tends to make.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I don't have.
- 4:58Speaker 1: A whole lot more to say about this. If you
- 4:59Speaker 1: think it sounds fun, yeah, it's probably fun. I mean
- 5:02Speaker 1: it was cute, it was kind of silly. Probably not
- 5:04Speaker 1: a game I would buy, although I think if I
- 5:06Speaker 1: found it a good will I probably would get it
- 5:08Speaker 1: because it's amusing. Maybe the kind of game it's fun
- 5:10Speaker 1: to play every now and again, as it's silly and
- 5:14Speaker 1: very light, easy to introduce to other people, and it's
- 5:16Speaker 1: going to be fun pretty much every time until you're
- 5:19Speaker 1: really familiar with the cards.
- 5:20Speaker 2: So not a whole lot more to say.
- 5:23Speaker 1: It fits the genre pretty solidly, and if you like
- 5:26Speaker 1: that sort of game, I bet you'll like it. If
- 5:28Speaker 1: you don't like this sort of game, this game is
- 5:30Speaker 1: not going to change your mind. That's Master Dater came
- 5:33Speaker 1: out in twenty twenty two. The designer is Jason Anarchy
- 5:38Speaker 1: and from the Joking Hazard company, which is an arm
- 5:44Speaker 1: of cyanide and happiness. All Right, that was quick, but
- 5:47Speaker 1: not surprising. Next, I always like to talk about a
- 5:51Speaker 1: game I've dusted off, or in this case, a game
- 5:54Speaker 1: that I played an expansion for for the first time.
- 5:56Speaker 1: So I'd like to talk about Orleon's Invasion. I don't
- 5:59Speaker 1: believe that I I've talked about this yeh on a podcast.
- 6:01Speaker 1: If I had my apologies, you can see whether I'm
- 6:03Speaker 1: a hypocrite. Go back and compare this mini review with
- 6:07Speaker 1: that mini review and see if I'm.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Consistent in what I have to say.
- 6:11Speaker 1: So I've mentioned a number of times if you've listened
- 6:13Speaker 1: to the podcast. Orleans is one of my favorite games.
- 6:16Speaker 1: This is a Reiner Stockhausen game in which you are
- 6:19Speaker 1: a medieval merchant trying to build up your influence by
- 6:24Speaker 1: hiring valuable people for the Orleans area, completing beneficial deeds
- 6:30Speaker 1: which help the community and gain you stature, as well
- 6:33Speaker 1: as gaining points through a variety of other means. Orleans
- 6:37Speaker 1: is an excellent game, with a good rhythm, interesting choices throughout,
- 6:43Speaker 1: complex of different things you might pursue, and so on.
- 6:47Speaker 1: I really like the game, and it's a game I
- 6:49Speaker 1: would happily play over and over again, so much so
- 6:52Speaker 1: that I have bought the expansions for the game.
- 6:55Speaker 2: In their many varied forms.
- 6:57Speaker 1: So I have a number of different expansions for Orleans
- 7:01Speaker 1: that do a number of different things. I haven't played
- 7:04Speaker 1: very many of these, though, because I don't break the
- 7:06Speaker 1: game out.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Enough to have a regular group of people who.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Know the game well enough to play it in its
- 7:11Speaker 1: advanced form. That said, I did have a friend over
- 7:13Speaker 1: who had played it before, and so we decided to
- 7:16Speaker 1: try the Orleans Invasion co op module. Now, if you
- 7:19Speaker 1: aren't familiar with the Orleans expansions, there are three expansion sets.
- 7:24Speaker 1: There's Trade and Intrigue, There's Invasion, and then there's the Plague.
- 7:30Speaker 1: They did also release a Orleans set called the Fifth
- 7:34Speaker 1: Player Expansion, which adds enough tokens to be able to
- 7:37Speaker 1: play five players in the game. If you buy the
- 7:40Speaker 1: Orleans right now from Capstone, it has the fifth Player
- 7:43Speaker 1: in it already, So the only reason you would need
- 7:46Speaker 1: the Fifth Player Expansion is if you're somebody like me
- 7:49Speaker 1: who had the original Tasty Minstrel edition. I did recently
- 7:52Speaker 1: complete my collection of Orleons I have I found someone
- 7:55Speaker 1: who had the Trade and Intrigue expansion and the fifth
- 7:58Speaker 1: player expansion, and we didn't have a copy of Orleans
- 8:01Speaker 1: for toggle. So in agreement with Rob who helps her
- 8:05Speaker 1: on toggle, I spent forty dollars buying the copy of
- 8:09Speaker 1: Orleans for Toggle and thirty dollars buying the expansions for myself,
- 8:14Speaker 1: and there we go. That's the path by which I
- 8:17Speaker 1: have Orleans. I bought the Invasion or the Invasion expansion
- 8:21Speaker 1: some time ago when it was on sale after Tasty
- 8:24Speaker 1: Menstro Games went on a business and before Capstone picked
- 8:28Speaker 1: up the game, and I bought the Plague expansion at
- 8:33Speaker 1: the Capstone booth at gen Con this year. So today
- 8:36Speaker 1: I was trying the Invasion expansion, which, like I said,
- 8:38Speaker 1: makes Orleans into a co op game.
- 8:40Speaker 2: So the way that works.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Is that normally in Orleans, you are not playing cooperatively.
- 8:46Speaker 1: With this expansion, you play cooperatively by trying. You still
- 8:50Speaker 1: are trying to accomplish a number of things, but now
- 8:54Speaker 1: instead of trying to gain points to win the game,
- 8:57Speaker 1: because you're working cooperatively, instead you're trying to get another
- 9:00Speaker 1: resources and efficiencies to be able to accomplish a number
- 9:03Speaker 1: of goals. There are like five different win mechanisms, and
- 9:06Speaker 1: you have to accomplish like three of them in order
- 9:09Speaker 1: to win. So as a group, you kind of conspire
- 9:12Speaker 1: to do these different things.
- 9:13Speaker 2: I don't recall exactly.
- 9:14Speaker 1: It might be that you have to complete all five exactly,
- 9:17Speaker 1: or it might not be three. I might not have
- 9:20Speaker 1: the details correct in terms of the specifics of how
- 9:23Speaker 1: you work together. But the main thing is you kind
- 9:26Speaker 1: of have to balance between gaining efficiency by developing your
- 9:30Speaker 1: own bag building engine and winning the game by expending
- 9:35Speaker 1: some of your resources to accomplish the different goals set
- 9:39Speaker 1: out in the cooperative game menu. The Invasion expansion was
- 9:44Speaker 1: reasonably difficult, but not outrageously so. My player and I,
- 9:49Speaker 1: the two of us who played together, I think did
- 9:52Speaker 1: a good job in developing the strategies and talking it
- 9:56Speaker 1: out with one another that we were able to complete
- 10:00Speaker 1: the required choices either the last turn of the game
- 10:06Speaker 1: or the second to last turn of the game. But
- 10:09Speaker 1: it wasn't clear until we got to like turn I
- 10:12Speaker 1: think there's twenty turns in the game, and we got
- 10:14Speaker 1: to like turn seventeen or eighteen before.
- 10:17Speaker 2: We were sure we'd be able to make it.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Because here's the thing, because you're drawing tokens out of
- 10:21Speaker 1: your bag. If you need to accomplish specific goals, then
- 10:25Speaker 1: you have the bad luck to not draw the tiles
- 10:27Speaker 1: that you need to complete those goals. Then you can
- 10:29Speaker 1: just get absolutely screwed. So it's really something you have
- 10:33Speaker 1: to work on mitigating the luck factor in some way
- 10:36Speaker 1: so that I've been talking with the other people playing
- 10:39Speaker 1: so that you can work together to accomplish your goals
- 10:42Speaker 1: before the end. Just overall, it was a really good design.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I really liked that expansion. Like I said, there's a
- 10:50Speaker 1: bunch more that I haven't tried yet, So I've got
- 10:52Speaker 1: lots of Orleons content.
- 10:54Speaker 2: To explore and I'm looking forward to doing so.
- 10:56Speaker 1: The Arleon's Invasion expansion is credit to de Rhiner Stockhouse,
- 11:00Speaker 1: but also Inca and Marcus Brand, to designers with whom
- 11:03Speaker 1: I or whose.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Work I generally do enjoy quite a bit. So Orleon's Invasion.
- 11:09Speaker 3: All right.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Finally, we have a amusing set collection game called Dastardly Dirigibles.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Dastanly Diriduals was released in twenty sixteen and designed by
- 11:20Speaker 1: Justin DeWitt.
- 11:21Speaker 3: So.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Dastard lyad Dirigibles is a game where you are drafting
- 11:26Speaker 1: cards and adding them to your tableau in order to
- 11:30Speaker 1: build an airship and gain points for the cards that
- 11:34Speaker 1: you've selected. There's an element of rummy to it, where
- 11:37Speaker 1: you're drawing cards and choosing to play cards, and you
- 11:39Speaker 1: always have to be discarding them, as I recall, and
- 11:42Speaker 1: there's a fair amount of take that where you're stealing
- 11:44Speaker 1: things off other people's tableaus or discarding things that they
- 11:49Speaker 1: need to get the most points. The way the game
- 11:51Speaker 1: is set up, there are sort of suits of cards.
- 11:53Speaker 1: There's several different cards with different designs of airships on them,
- 11:58Speaker 1: and while you can build an airship up using designs
- 12:01Speaker 1: from multiple different sets, you're going to get the fewest points.
- 12:04Speaker 1: That way the game is really designed for you. Or
- 12:07Speaker 1: you get the most points by having as consistent a
- 12:10Speaker 1: set as possible. So I think the way, if I recall,
- 12:12Speaker 1: the way it works is whichever set you have the
- 12:14Speaker 1: most of, you get the set bonus for that group.
- 12:18Speaker 1: So you want to have as many as possible of
- 12:20Speaker 1: one set. This is a relatively easy game to play.
- 12:23Speaker 1: It's not too complicated, and it's not too long. I
- 12:27Speaker 1: think the full game was twenty minutes or half an hour. Well,
- 12:30Speaker 1: within a nice filler kind of thing. Like I said,
- 12:33Speaker 1: it was a little bit of take that, but it's
- 12:35Speaker 1: not such a strong game that the take that really
- 12:37Speaker 1: matters that much, and the game is short enough that
- 12:39Speaker 1: nobody really minds. All in all, it's fine. Probably not
- 12:43Speaker 1: a game I'm going to play a ton, but I
- 12:44Speaker 1: don't think it's gone on the trade pile yet. So
- 12:48Speaker 1: that's where we are with dastard Leader Rigials. That's also
- 12:51Speaker 1: where we are with this episode of board Game Espresso.
- 12:54Speaker 1: If you have things to share about what games you've
- 12:56Speaker 1: been playing lately, I'd love to hear them. You can
- 12:58Speaker 1: post them in the Board game Gig forum, board game
- 13:01Speaker 1: geek dot com, slash guild Slash three two sixty nine,
- 13:04Speaker 1: or you can send me a message on board game
- 13:06Speaker 1: Geek Wombat nine two nine is my user name there,
- 13:10Speaker 1: or I would love to hear from you in any
- 13:12Speaker 1: other method that you choose to reach out. Thanks for
- 13:15Speaker 1: joining me on my walk today. I hope your next
- 13:17Speaker 1: walk this is pleasant as mine was.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Oh Bye.
