Transcript
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: All right, welcome back to Niners Nightly on these sports leader, who purpose having a great July the Fourteenth, and we're gonna talk a little Joann Jennings.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: Right now with Guy Haberman, who's joining us on the Uma Gas line to talk a little bit about the story of the day.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: If you missed it, Joann Jennings has given the Niners an ultimatum.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_00]: Pay me or trade me.
- 0:24[SPEAKER_00]: What's up, Guy?
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: How are you?
- 0:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's up Larry.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's great to see you.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_01]: I don't hate a Monday when there's a little bit of news, and we got some of that today.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, seriously.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: Well, what do you think?
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Jennings is, you know, everybody's favorite, including the Niners, they love him.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: They just gave him a new two year deal a year ago.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: He's in year two, making seven and a half million dollars.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's year two of a two year, fifteen point four million dollar deal that he signed at the beginning of last year.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: And we all know, you know, he, you know, third inch of one.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: He's the glue guy.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: He's one of the toughest guys in the locker room.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: And he's also do a five point six million dollar option bonus September the first but he wants a new deal or he wants to be traded and he announced it on the fourteenth of July and supposedly he wants us all to be resolved before the twenty second when camp opens.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: What do you make of the action the aggressive action of Joanne Jennings?
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: Well, now last I check, tell me if you've heard otherwise, I was able to find anything in the reporting today from Shepher, but reading back on an article in Nick Wagner wrote last year, Joann Jennings represented by Drew and Jason Rose on House.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: These are seasoned professionals who know how to do business.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: So let's be right, like let's at least, Joann didn't put this out today.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_01]: Joann didn't text Shepher on the Fourteenth
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: And my guess is the Rosenhaus family operation.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_01]: They've been working on this for a while.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: They have incentive to have been working on this for a while.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: The Niners M.O.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: wasn't this way with Kittle or Warner or Perti is to let this thing get deep into the off season and into the beginning of the season.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: So I guess from that standpoint, it shouldn't be a surprise.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: You always laugh when a player without much leverage says,
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: do this or I want to be, or I'll request the trade, which then requires the team to agree to his trade request, which you know, probably would not happen and requires there to be a partner.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: The thing is, it's really good for the forty-nine years to have John Jennings.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's really good for John Jennings to remain in the forty-nine years.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like last year, he almost went for a thousand yards.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: He was the only consistently healthy, available and productive
- 2:42[SPEAKER_01]: receiver on the team.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: He is the only guy, Larry, currently the checks three boxes.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: Established, healthy, well, or I guess that's two box.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_01]: What was my third, I had a third box.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_01]: Established, healthy,
- 3:03[SPEAKER_01]: The third box was and not facing suspension.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_01]: So he's the only guy in the receiver room that's established consistently healthy and not facing a suspect.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: In other words, like he's the number one receiver on the team this year.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I do think there's a possibility if you find the right number, which matters like what is he asking.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_01]: If you pay him fifteen million dollars, it doubles his salary.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: and he has a good year, that's a pretty good value.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: I just don't see the items getting into a situation where they're guaranteed three years of a contract, that sort of thing.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a long way of saying, I think there's a resolution here that benefits everybody.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I just say this.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I did a little exercise the other day just looking at every team's wide receiver core and I can almost guarantee you that they're going to be ten to fifteen decent wide receiver prospects that are going to be cut loose or exposed to waivers on the way to the practice squad.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_00]: And when you have that many guys out there,
- 4:14[SPEAKER_00]: Um, that are interesting.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: I can't pay a guy who's been a really nice player, but, you know, a complimentary piece.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_00]: I can't pay him like a star.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know what he wants.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what he wants.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: He's making seven and a half.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: Um, if he wants two years and twenty million, I probably could do that, you know, ten million a year.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and get that done.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: But if he's really looking to break the bank and get that fifteen million plus per year offer,
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: No, I don't think so.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: But is there a isn't there a thing that satisfies your criteria and his like Cooper Cup as a three year forty five million dollar contract?
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: But it's seventeen and a half million guaranteed at signing.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like isn't there a world where John Jennings gets rewarded gets paid?
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: He's just turned twenty eight four days ago in his prime.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: He gets paid
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: You double his salary, right?
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: That would be a significant thing.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: And still at fifteen million dollars, like that's Gabe Davis money.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: Like, for the guy who's clearly your most reliable receiver that's available to you at this point.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_01]: By a mile, that doesn't seem, and here's anything Larry would do.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: Now you have cost certain to you in twenty twenty six, if he has a good year, who plays on the last year of their contract?
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: What players that matter to a team play on the last year of their contract?
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: Really?
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: I know, I mean, this is a really tough one because this guy's a great story, right?
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's a seventh round pick.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: He's a self-made player.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's a really, really savvy tough possession receiver.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_00]: He's entering his age of twenty eight season, you know.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: The stat that I think, you know, helps him, you know, argues his case is that fifty three of his seventy seven catches last year.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: Either went for first downs or touchdowns.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: He only has a three point four percent drop rate the last two years.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: you know, so he's a solid possession receiver for sure.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he's really, really dependable and he's tough and you know, he's going to show up in the biggest games.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to play and he plays nicked up and everything.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: He's really, really good, but he's also a four, seven receiver in a world where the receivers are plentiful and
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: As I said, I can go short-term, you know, I get two-year extension for, you know, decent money, and maybe ten, maybe something like a ten or twelve, but I really, I wouldn't, I don't think it's smart for them to extend.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think of the people that have been critical of Shanahan and the forty-ninters saying that they've paid too many receivers, that they're two receivers centric.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: They spent too much money and too much draft capital and receivers already.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like, I kind of shrug at it.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, look where they're at.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_01]: They're at Brandon and I do go on an ACL, Ricky Pierce all yet to prove anything in Joanne Jennings and Debogon.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: So have they spent too much capital?
- 7:25[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like, I think you just kind of just constantly trying to acquire where I would agree with you or whatever the best talent available to you is like, they didn't want to draft Ricky Pierce.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: All they just happened to be at the end of the first round.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody wanted to trade out.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: They took a guy they liked.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_01]: So, I don't know.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have a big beef with it.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: Like, now, I will say this.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: The school of the, I think if you said, guy, just give me the simplest course to success for Kyle Chanahan.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: This every year, if Kyle has one rule for his football team, what should that rule be?
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: To me, the rule would be, make your defense awesome.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: If Kyle Chanahan has an awesome defense, he's probably not a pretty good team.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: Given his ability to coach offense.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_01]: So, like,
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: to the receiver criticism.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: I guess I get it to a point, but here we are.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I don't know, it's kind of like seeing you get too many starting pictures, like by mid-season, you'll have two.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: So it's, I understand the logic to the criticism, but look, look at this team right now.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: Look at one proven receiver, and it's Joanne Jennings.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_01]: So I look, the other thing Larry, some of that production can come down if McAfrey's healthy
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: Right, McAfrey will get some of those first-down catches, but it won't change, I think, the value of this guy.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_01]: He's pretty important, and they don't have another player like him.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: He's not redundant in any way for them.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, maybe you would say, well, if Pierce saw the Nyuker, both healthy and good, maybe they're a little redundant, but Jennings, there's not, they don't have another Jennings.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: And the irony is, I think this is probably part of the point you're making,
- 9:09[SPEAKER_01]: His success is almost the proof of why you don't need to pay a guy, eighteen million dollars, because they could have paid Kendrick Porn, and they didn't, and they drafted Joanne Jennings on the seventh round.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I understand that, that's also logical.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm just, to me, just look at the situation they're in right now.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_01]: And it's very easy to see his scenario where they need him in twenty twenty six.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: What's I, you, status?
- 9:33[SPEAKER_01]: Again, we just, everybody that's a question right now in the receiver room.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_01]: is also a question in twenty twenty six.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's not just that I used to come back from the injury, but they also have to repair the relationship and get productivity and all that stuff.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: So what I see in Jennings, if you can get them on a contract that's essentially like a two year deal is a pretty stable, a pretty stable guy in a room that's pretty unstable right now.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I agree with everything you say, but ultimately, it, I think it's also kind of a supply.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's really just the supply and demand, right?
- 10:12[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Keenan Allen is still out there and so's Amari Cooper and so's Gabe Davis and so's Tyler Boyd and so's DJ Chark and so's Nelson Agalore and James and Crowder and so I mean, those are just names, I think you're just naming writers.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_00]: But I mean, yeah, all these guys have played for the Raiders at some point.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they're all receivers out there and there's also, you know, going to be more receivers available at the cut down.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: And this guy is twenty eight.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: I just, you know, there's limits to what I would pay, I guess.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's expected to be on camp on time.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's not expected to hold out.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: He's expected to hold in.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_00]: But he's also a very powerful personality in the room.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: And if he's unhappy and he's there,
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: I, you know, I'll say the other thing is it this seems like this seems to be like why teams don't last very long.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's like everybody's got to take get, get taken care of.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, okay, then it's, is it, are we a team anymore?
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: Is it a bunch of guys worried about themselves?
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: Well, but I mean, that's just a function of the sport.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that's, that is the business.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: That's not a personality issue.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not blaming him for him just saying how many guys in the room can you pay and it's like all of a sudden it seems like it's become as the roster ages it becomes about everybody needs to get theirs but the team has yet to get theirs you know I mean the the team is yet to reach the pinnacle but you know everybody's got to get their individual
- 11:52[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you know, situation taking care of.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_00]: He's a good player.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_00]: Don't get me wrong.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: He was very good last year.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_00]: Seventy seven catches could have gone for a thousand yards.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: Got ejected in the last game.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: Six touchdowns played fifteen games.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_01]: Probably getting Larry.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_01]: Can I interrupt you?
- 12:05[SPEAKER_01]: Say, yeah, no, go ahead.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: Is he getting seventy seven catches on a twelve win team?
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's the other thing.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he did have seven at least seven catches in six games.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but I, you know, he's really
- 12:20[SPEAKER_01]: has he he's not he can't pay him like a number one receiver as for sure and I don't know where you got to pay him more like a two or three because he's more of a two or three I you know I think I agree with that and then I just have like a two like a one that's like a one and a half and a two that's like a two and a you know as I you could true one not in the true true sense of ones but he can play like a one producer
- 12:50[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think that what you just, you listed all those potentially available receivers that also depresses any trade market that exists for him.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_01]: So it makes it hard for him to bully the Niners.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think he wants to, he does not want to be, he doesn't want to be traded on July, for team.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 13:14[SPEAKER_01]: What player wants to be traded when they're the number one receiving target at the end of July go, go where?
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: go play for who?
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: Well, on what team?
- 13:23[SPEAKER_01]: That's not what he wants.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: That is not the, I'd be shocked if that might have been the result I you wanted.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: And then they, we're going to trade him to New England.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_01]: You didn't want that result.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_01]: And then you're trading to Cleveland.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_01]: You didn't want that result.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't even, let's start with that.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't want to be traded.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_01]: And there's not going to be the hottest market form given what you just described if available cheaper players.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_01]: So I think there's really an incentive, I go back to the Cooper Cup deal, maybe you hate that deal, but seventeen and a half million dollars a guaranteed money on a, but it'll make fifteen this year.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you know, the divers would argue, well, if it's a one-year contract, we don't have to do anything.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: We'll pay you seven and a half this year, which I would understand.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't know, it seems to me like with an experienced agent with what should be a soft trade market, there's a
- 14:14[SPEAKER_01]: pretty acceptable conclusion here from the Ford matters perspective.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: How rich would you go?
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: Because, you know, I said, I'd go two years, twenty million, but I don't know if I wanted to do any, I don't, I don't want to do three years, forty five million.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to give them that much.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: But even if it's really just like a one year, like Cooper Cups deal is basically a one year contract.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's three for forty five was seventeen and a half guaranteed.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'd have to look as well as dead cap might be eight million in twenty six, which is more than the night.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_01]: That's the whole miners cap right now is eight million dollars in twenty twenty six.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_01]: Not factoring in this rollover, which is a massive rollover at this point.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: What do they have?
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: forty five million dollars in cap space right now?
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: Which is a lot of rollover and I heard you and I understand why it exists.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: I heard you say like what's the point of all this rollover cap if you don't use it?
- 15:07[SPEAKER_01]: What's the point to the twenty twenty five team?
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: You should use some of it in twenty five.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: Well, to me, it's a great, it's a great thing to be able to do it because like if you're a young team that's not contending really, yeah, roll over a bunch and have it when you need it.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_00]: But for a team like the forty-nineers that's in like twilight, so many of their Hall of Famers and stars are in the twilight of their prime, I would say this would be an odd year to kind of roll over fifty mil.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_01]: What would you trade?
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: What since you're at least open to trading him if the right offer
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: if it's a hard line and it's not going to take fifteen million dollars.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: You would trade them, is that what you're saying?
- 15:48[SPEAKER_00]: Guy, I don't believe there's a trademark it out there for him.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_00]: I really don't because, because when, I think that the Niners are paying him, commensurate with what the League thinks of him.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_00]: He's like the thirty-nine-tious paid wide receiver.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't think that in from the league's point of view, he's overpaid.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_00]: He's probably paid pretty much right about what he should be paid.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_00]: He might be a slight good deal.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: But I don't know.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think his best chance of getting, you know, the kind of money he wants is probably from the Niners.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't, I don't see a trade out there.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: Like somebody said, oh, maybe the chargers would trade the receiver from TCU that's bombed and like a second round, like a third round pick next year and something else.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, why would they do that?
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: I don't, I don't see that happening.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_00]: Quentin Johnson, I think.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's funny when Kendrick born left.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_01]: He left.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_01]: He was too expensive for the others.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_01]: He left for three years and fifteen million dollars.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: And seven point two guaranteed.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: And obviously, that was what four year five years ago.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: But I tend to agree with you.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: I think I don't know if it's exactly commiserate what the League thinks of him because when you're the set, when you're a set, you start with Brock.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_01]: You start so far behind from a salary standpoint that it's hard to ever really catch up.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_01]: unless you become a true free agent.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_01]: Because everything is going to sound good to you.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_01]: Like a fifteen millions lower, four teams low, but I'm making seven and a half.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_01]: How do I not take that?
- 17:27[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't, yeah, I don't, you know, they're in the similar situation that I use in last year, in this sense, like if you don't pay him, he needs to play because he's going to be a free agent.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_01]: So we can't not play.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody holds out truly from games anymore, right?
- 17:44[SPEAKER_01]: And you need to show everybody that you're worth whatever you want them to pay you as a free agent coming up.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_01]: So you have a real incentive to perform.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, it feels like we never really get there.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_01]: But that's the leverage that I had to have.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_01]: It was like, look, man, okay, fine.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_01]: Take a lever.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_01]: Take a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a
- 18:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think he stays and gets a short term bump for one more year, but I don't think he gets a dramatic increase, but I also don't think he leaves.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they like him, he likes them.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he doesn't want to, as you said, I think you're totally right.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: He wants to be here.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: He just needs, he wants to get paid and he sees his NFL mortality and his agents, he's like, you know, let's just be honest about this too.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_00]: The agents plan super hardball.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and you won, that's Joanne's guy.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the agent works for you.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, I mean, it's like you're separate from your agent.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: No, you, you're with your agent and he's playing super hardball to contact the team eight days before the veterans are to report and to demand when you have a contract that you just negotiated a year ago.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and you're saying no no.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_00]: I want more.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_00]: What about me?
- 19:13[SPEAKER_01]: You don't think this is brand new to the team today.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: No, but I think no, no, I think that they probably knew this was coming, but the timing is very peculiar.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: I can't imagine that the team would be enthralled by the timing.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they're surprised necessarily, but that's just because they're lynched as pretty savvy, they're pretty smart.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_00]: They kind of knew John was going to ask for more.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that, you know, it's
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: He's been the guy who's produced.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he's the guy that shows up in the Super Bowl.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_00]: So I understand why he wants to get taken care of.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_00]: I just think that the NFL equation is about what's your market?
- 19:55[SPEAKER_00]: What have you done?
- 19:56[SPEAKER_00]: But it's also about what are you going to do?
- 19:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I think there's, you know, a
- 20:01[SPEAKER_00]: And his body's starting to break down a bit.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_00]: I think I would be surprised if they gave him more than one more year and more than a couple extra million.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he's getting like a two year, thirty five million dollar extension or anything, do you?
- 20:19[SPEAKER_00]: a two year thirty five million dollar extension which would be like you know seventeen and a half a year you know people are suggesting that he's gonna make uh... you know fifteen to twenty that he wants fifteen to twenty per year and that that's the neighbor he wants to be in and to me that's too rich if that's the neighbor he wants to be in i would say that's awesome good luck to you thank you for your contribution but in in the would because of supply and demand and there's such a great supply i can't pay that money
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just go back to the guarantee.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what is the guarantee?
- 20:51[SPEAKER_01]: I think you can give him a major boost this year on a deal that looks like it's that deal you're discussing.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'm with, I wouldn't, seventeen million dollars over three years or something.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_01]: I would not do.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_00]: Would you give him his last deal?
- 21:03[SPEAKER_00]: His last deal was two years, fifteen point three million dollars.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_01]: It'll hurt me.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_00]: because I hate two more years, so we'll tack on two more years at the same time.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but he's not gonna, but I don't think he wants more.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he wants to see.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_01]: And again, like, I understand why he does.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_01]: I understand why he does.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_01]: The Rosen, how these are professional agents, okay?
- 21:25[SPEAKER_01]: They have a reputation to a bold Larry, and it's not that just sit at home and let guys reach reagents the other time.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_01]: So I think they're doing their job.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_01]: And you were at OTAs, I was in many, like, we watched them.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_01]: He was one of the best players on the field.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 21:44[SPEAKER_00]: He looks fine.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's not his game.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_00]: His game is not OTAs.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_00]: He's not a practice guy.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: He's a Sunday guy.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_01]: But I, you know, I agree, but he, he practiced hard.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: No, I mean, he, I mean, the guy's tough.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_00]: The guy's a gamer.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_00]: He's a leader.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_00]: He's one of the tone setters on the team.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's more of a, it's more of a locker room thing than anything because this is one of the leaders in the room.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_00]: and how many you took away arm stead you took away green log you took away a phonga how many how many leaders do you want to lose and they've lost quite a few of them in this guy's definitely one yeah i think he's a leader on the field i'm not sure on the field yeah it's yeah i think the lock room understands
- 22:26[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's the NFL.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's business and business always prevails and always goes on and nobody's naive to it.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm just saying, this guy, like there's a lot of guys that don't matter.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I know it sounds that sounds kind of weird.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_00]: But a lot of guys that doesn't matter, they're kind of interchangeable.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_00]: This guy matters.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_01]: But I would just say like where I, my point of contention, it's not a point of contention, but like this team has, I don't know, like, leader leaders.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_01]: He's a, he play his style fits and he's a fit.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: That's the thing.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_01]: He's a fit for them.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_01]: They're a fit for him.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of think his game actually ages maybe better than it sounds like you, you do.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm worried about, I gotta be honest.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a little concerned about how he's going to evolve, let's say, in the twilight of his career.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: Because he, you know, because you always lose a little bit of speed.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_00]: But most of these guys have a little bit of speed to lose.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_00]: Now, this guy doesn't have a lot of speed to lose.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_00]: And you show me a receiver that runs like, you know, came into the league four sevens and maybe slows down a little bit.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_00]: That's not necessarily, I don't know that I want to invest guaranteed dollars anymore guaranteed dollars in this position.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think of that?
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I get it.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's just so much of it's dependent on like, what's going to happen with that you?
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be back.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be back in twenty five to his old self.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be back on the team in twenty six.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be back to his old self in twenty six.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_01]: You know, if he's not, then you need how how do you get receivers?
- 24:11[SPEAKER_01]: Now, the other thing you would say is, like, go look at the first shanty hand Super Bowl team.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_01]: Well, what do they really have at receiver that you're they?
- 24:17[SPEAKER_01]: They added what's his name from the Broncos halfway through the year, right?
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: Manual Sanders.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_01]: Manual Sanders.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: He's had some great receivers here.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_01]: Shane Han has won with his receiver room not being one of the top paid receiver rooms in the league, right?
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, but again, right now in twenty twenty five you have one
- 24:45[SPEAKER_01]: guy that checks all three boxes, proven, healthy, not facing suspension.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_01]: And it's too on Jennings.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_01]: So that's worth something.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: Like I think, I guess my point Larry is you can pay him, you can do a contract with him that doesn't really hamstring you when he's thirty years old.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_01]: I think maybe he wouldn't accept it.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he wants twenty million dollars a year and then I'm wrong about it.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure Rosenhaus feels like he's got the Niners over a barrel.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_00]: If there wasn't a Joann Jennings, and I yuk is out until, you know, later in the year, let's just take this report this week to have you back week one as just, that's not true, or the possibility exists.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: But let's just say that's slim and it probably not going to happen.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_00]: And let's just say Demarcus Robinson isn't there.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: So you have no
- 25:39[SPEAKER_00]: No, are you?
- 25:41[SPEAKER_00]: No, Debo, obviously.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: No, to Marcus Robinson.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, possibly no John Jennings.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_00]: How do you see, I mean, what do you got?
- 25:53[SPEAKER_00]: You got, and that's if everybody else stays healthy.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: You've got Pierce All Cowling and Watkins.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_00]: And then it's, you know, Isaiah Hodgins, Isaiah Nayer Jr.
- 26:05[SPEAKER_01]: Brogan.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, that's pretty thin.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's thin.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I think the highlight there is Ricky Pierce All, the last forty days ago or not forty days ago, whatever.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's the thirty three days ago.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he ended, he ended camp her.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_00]: Right, didn't finish.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_01]: And had a, you know, had a shoulder injury last year that Betty got in the preseason.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_01]: So that's the, you know, that's the big F in that room.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: That's the big F. But he finished last year with such momentum, you know, Brent Jones, who you know very well, who I talked to on my YouTube channel a couple of years ago.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: He thought that Ricky really showed something late in the year, not just in production, but in separation and comfort and
- 26:52[SPEAKER_01]: He expects him to have a big year, so I'm hopeful, but he's got to be healthy.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be interesting.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be really interesting.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_00]: And then there's the whole slew of other receivers as a Christian Kirk around the league that could be trade eligible in August at any point.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: And there's a whole list of guys like that.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_00]: There's a list of young receivers that probably are in crowded situations.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: Green Bay, Jets, KC, very crowded situations.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see about that.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_00]: One last one before we let you go, we appreciate you stopping by.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_00]: The great guy Abraham in with us on the U.S.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_00]: line here on Niners Nightly.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_00]: Jerry Rice said the Niners have added too many pieces, too many additions that they should have stayed with more continuity.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: and he feels almost like, and I won't put words in Jerry's mouth, but judging from what he said recently, it seems like he feels like there's been too much turnover, especially on defense, and that turnover may preclude them from being a true contender of any sort this year, and he's kind of looking at it as kind of like, hey, they should have kept a lot of these other guys.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if I would agree other than green law, even green law that was with my heart, not my head kind of a decision.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_00]: I love Jerry and Jerry's Jerry knows more than everybody, right?
- 28:13[SPEAKER_00]: He knows so much about this game, but what do you think?
- 28:15[SPEAKER_00]: Do you agree with Jerry?
- 28:17[SPEAKER_00]: Have the Niners lost too many pieces to, they have too little continuity to really contend in, in, twenty, twenty, five?
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: Well, other than Mooney Ward who, you know, was clear, it was not going to come back.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_01]: Who would you want back?
- 28:30[SPEAKER_01]: and green law.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_01]: So there's one guy you couldn't have had back.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_01]: If you wanted to drink green law back, I understand that.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_01]: Beyond that, you know, what do you want back?
- 28:39[SPEAKER_01]: They post his back, the Norse back, Fred Warner's back.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_01]: That's a pretty good defensive core.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_01]: Where you're going to bring back one of the state, where you're going to bring back, uh, who funga?
- 28:49[SPEAKER_01]: Is that what you wanted to do?
- 28:51[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't know, like, who else would you even point to?
- 28:55[SPEAKER_01]: Who's on that list?
- 28:57[SPEAKER_01]: Um,
- 28:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think some of those guys had bigger names than they had game left, but to be completely honest.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_01]: I don't, you know, your defensive line is going to return four out of the five, your quarterback's back, your tight ends back, your running backs are back, your number one receiver from last year, I guess is back.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_01]: But I just don't know, you know, Ward, if you could have said one guy has to come back, they wouldn't have come back, they didn't come back.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I think
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: Which maybe it would have picked Mooney Ward.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for me.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's Mooney.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_01]: And he wasn't going to come back.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_01]: Right now, that situation was pretty clear.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_01]: So this is the natural progression of things, unfortunately.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_01]: And, uh, you know, I still look at a team and go when you bring back Nick both a diameter of the North Red Warner.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_01]: You drafted.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_01]: You used two premium picks on defensive linemen up front.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_01]: You drafted a corner last year that projects now to be your other corner in Renardo Green.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: You brought your defensive coordinator back.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like, that's good.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_01]: That's good.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_01]: That should be good enough.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_01]: Put it that way.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_01]: It should be good enough.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_01]: The safety is a big question, no Larry.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_01]: There's no question.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: Safety is a huge question, but you can help the safety's out with the past rush.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to need a few breaks.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to need a few breaks to kill you.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I got to look at their schedule.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_00]: They got a very favorable schedule.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to need a few breaks.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's reasonable to think that they can contend.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_00]: I really do.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_00]: They were really poor in the division.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're going to get the upper hand in the division this year.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_00]: I love the schedule.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_00]: I love what I saw from Purdue in the off season.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_00]: He looks like he's really on another level.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think the loss of Debo, which is such a big national talking point,
- 30:45[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's going to be that big because I think you've got some guys that create more separation.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_00]: I think because you have more separation, Brock will throw a few or fifty, fifty balls.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's potentially fewer turnovers because of that.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_00]: So I think there's some positives in the transition.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_00]: I don't see it as, oh my God, they've lost everybody.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_00]: The ones that people would point to would be like, hey, they really kind of need as much past rush and the D line as possible.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_00]: And they definitely Collins go.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_00]: They replace them with a rookie.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_00]: They've got a hundred Floyd go.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_00]: They replaced them with a rookie.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I guess they brought him bright stuff after that.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_00]: But they brought him a lot of youth up front.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to have to, big question is, how's the youth going to play up front?
- 31:22[SPEAKER_00]: But I'll say this.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: I love CJ West.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think CJ West is a monster.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_00]: That's a get for sure.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what the rest of them, but I love him.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_00]: All right, man, we're going to see up in camp.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_00]: You're always at training camp.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_00]: You're a big training camp guy.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a big training camp guy, Larry.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you love it, but you're there.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_00]: I'll say this, man.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_00]: You're out there with the rest of us sweating it out.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_00]: And I know you got a lot of college football on your schedule this year.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'll miss a few camp days because of a big, ten media days in Vegas in a couple of weeks, but I will see out there.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_01]: Media days is eight, a lot of three days media days, but a lot of teams.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_00]: what any any games that you can tell us about in September for the can be our audience that are big guy Abraham fans want to find you and see your college football work is there anything any game you can tease that we can kind of put on the schedule just to see because of you just the early non-conlary so you know you get your your your U.S.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_01]: C. Missouri State week one for all the Trojan fans I am excited I'm going to go see Penn State and your your boy Drew Aller week two
- 32:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're loaded.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're loaded.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: They're really loaded.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_00]: Guy Heyberman, he's the best.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_00]: He's outstanding.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_00]: Check him out.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_00]: He's a great fall on YouTube.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_00]: Check him out on X guy.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks again, man.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_00]: We'll do it again.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_01]: Great to talk to you, man.
- 32:44[SPEAKER_00]: Guy Heyberman, we got more straight ahead.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's Niners nightly on these sports leader.
