- 0:01He spent two days in 52nd place. There's a story behind that.
- 0:07This is your daily message from Chandler 1134 to upgrade your
- 0:11mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:14Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:16yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:18Atlas Crew Whitaker on his birthday.

- 0:31Here's the upgrade. You think being far back means
- 0:34you're out of it, but upgraded thinking knows Friday is a
- 0:36location, not a verdict. Here's the story.
- 0:42You may not be a golfer, but his story still has a very important
- 0:45lesson for you. A few days ago at Royal Birkdale
- 0:48in England, which is the oldest golf championship in the world,
- 0:51a 39 year old New Zealander named Ryan Fox lifted the Claret
- 0:55Jug as champion. The bookmakers had him at 200 to
- 0:58one. That means if you bet $10, you'd
- 1:01win $2000. He had never won a major in his
- 1:05life. After two of the four rounds,
- 1:08Fox sat in 52nd place, 52nd. For two days, your eye would
- 1:13have run right past his name without stopping.
- 1:15Then Saturday, he shot A621 of the lowest rounds anyone had
- 1:19ever fired at a major. He didn't play the leaderboard.
- 1:22He played the next shot. On Sunday, he closed with four
- 1:26birdies in his last six holes and rolled in one more on this
- 1:2972nd to win by a single stroke, the largest 36 hole comeback by
- 1:35position in the history of men's major golf.
- 1:39And here's how he did it. He didn't play 4 rounds.
- 1:42He didn't play 72 holes. He took one swing 270 times and
- 1:48270 was the exact number on his winning scorecard.
- 1:51He never played the tournament. He played the next shot over and
- 1:55over until the shots added up to a championship.
- 1:58Now notice what did not happen. Fox didn't become a different
- 2:02golfer overnight. The swing that won on Sunday was
- 2:04the swing that sat in 52nd on Friday.
- 2:08Same course, same swing. Nothing changed but the story.
- 2:11He refused to believe. Stephen King learned this craft
- 2:15from his editor. He said, quote, when you write a
- 2:17story, you're telling yourself the story.
- 2:20When you rewrite, your main job is taking out all the things
- 2:24that are not the story. End Quote.
- 2:26And that's exactly what Fox did and what you need to do too.
- 2:30His rewrite was deleting one sentence. 52nd place means I'm
- 2:35finished. Because it was never part of the
- 2:38actual story. It was just a line he had told
- 2:41himself on Friday. Most people never delete that
- 2:44line. They read the standings, they
- 2:47read the odds. They decide the ending.
- 2:49They stop planning their next move.
- 2:52Fox kept planning his. He's living proof that where you
- 2:56stand at the halfway point is a location, not a verdict.
- 3:00The better story to tell yourself is I'm not behind.
- 3:03I'm not finished. There may be a number in your
- 3:07life that says you're behind your age, your bank balance,
- 3:11your rank, your resume. That number is real, but it's
- 3:15not the one that pays. The tournament isn't over.
- 3:18You're still holding a club if you're still breathing.
- 3:21The story isn't over, so stop reading the ending in the
- 3:25middle. Cross out the sentence.
- 3:27That isn't the story. Don't play the round, play the
- 3:31next swing. Andre Agassi, the tennis star
- 3:34said it best about his own comeback.
- 3:37He said, quote, the same court on which you suffer your
- 3:40bloodiest defeat can become the scene of your sweetest triumph.
- 3:43End Quote. Royal Birkdale held Fox in 52nd
- 3:47for two days. Then it crowned him.
- 3:49Same course, same swing, different story.
- 3:53Delete everything from your story that isn't part of the
- 3:58story. Tell me a story of a comeback
- 4:01from the back of the pack to from chad.smith@gmail.com.
- 4:05Send someone to text and ask them where are you counting
- 4:08yourself out too early?
