- 0:00Thank you
- 0:03where you have some excellent song leaders here at Collierville.
- 0:07We've enjoyed our singing together and our fellowship.
- 0:10The meal was just a blessing.
- 0:14And thank you so much for being here this afternoon.
- 0:17You know, every successful organization has a model.
- 0:21And the Lions Club, they have a model and they've been following it for a very long time.
- 0:26Chick-fil-A has a model.
- 0:28And the employees are trained in that model.
- 0:34Chick-fil-A wants you to know how their franchise works.
- 0:36They franchise that model for a better company.
- 0:39have a model.
- 0:40FedEx has a model.
- 0:42FedEx wants you to know that model.
- 0:43They want you to know how it works and where you fit in.
- 0:47Every successful unit.
- 0:50Sports team has a model.
- 0:51The military has a model.
- 0:53And they want you to follow the model.
- 0:55They've been using the same model.
- 0:56The Navy has been in ship building and operating ships for decades, for a century.
- 1:04And they want you to follow the model.
- 1:06Teachers have a model.
- 1:08And they follow the model every day.
- 1:10It's a time-tested model.
- 1:12People use it because it works.
- 1:14The sports teams, the football team, you know, they have a model.
- 1:17Tennessee balls, they got a model.
- 1:19They keep working.
- 1:20They want you to follow the model.
- 1:22When the players come, they don't want the player to rewrite the model.
- 1:25They want you to find your place in the model.
- 1:28And then they want you to become an expert in your place.
- 1:32So what is the model of the New Testament church when it comes to evangelism?
- 1:39Well, when I did not come this morning or this afternoon to reinvent the wheel, the model was invented 2,000 years ago.
- 1:45The model stood the test of time.
- 1:47And if we want to know how to grow, we need
- 1:50to go back to the model and franchise the model.
- 1:52So what is the model?
- 1:54What is it that we need to do in order to duplicate what the New Testament church did?
- 1:59So what I want to introduce to you this afternoon is a model that comes right out of the book of Acts.
- 2:05How do we get people to sit down around the kitchen table and have a Bible study?
- 2:09How do we get them to open a Bible?
- 2:12How do we get them into our home?
- 2:13How do we tell the hearts of the people that live around us?
- 2:18Well, the model is nuts.
- 2:20It's not difficult.
- 2:21It's a simple six step model that you can read about throughout Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
- 2:27Jesus demonstrates it in his life, acts, implements it, and you can see it practiced throughout the pages of the New Testament.
- 2:35And it begins with people.
- 2:37You need contacts.
- 2:38A church cannot grow without them.
- 2:40You're not going to grow if you don't reach the people.
- 2:42The people are the key to the model.
- 2:45And every industry understands this.
- 2:47Walmart calls them customers without them.
- 2:50does not function.
- 2:51And so you need customers.
- 2:53You know, FedEx, you have to have customers.
- 2:56There's no FedEx without customers.
- 2:58Well, in the military, they need soldiers.
- 3:00They recruit soldiers.
- 3:02Without them, there is no military.
- 3:05The volunteers need players.
- 3:07Without players, there is no team.
- 3:09And so the team doesn't function.
- 3:11Dentists need patients.
- 3:13Without patients, you have no practice.
- 3:16Teachers need students.
- 3:18The airlines need passengers.
- 3:20You have to have people.
- 3:22Everybody understands this.
- 3:24But in the Church of Christ, where is our contact base?
- 3:28Who are they?
- 3:29How do we develop a customer base?
- 3:33Customer acquisition.
- 3:35And when you look at your strategy for reaching the lost here in Collierville, what's your strategy to develop?
- 3:41Now, I know that Aaron has a customer acquisition strategy in his area of work.
- 3:47He knows how to acquire them.
- 3:49He knows how to use his resources to build and
- 3:53and to draw in people so that he will have a base upon which to develop.
- 3:58And some of you here, we have a family that he said he was a plumber, him and his wife, and they're getting ready to sell their business this afternoon.
- 4:06He said, Rob, I can't make it this afternoon.
- 4:08I've been in this business for 37 years.
- 4:11I'm gonna sell my plumbing business today.
- 4:13He says, and I'm meeting someone at two o'clock.
- 4:16But I know that that man, I said, how many people work for you?
- 4:19says, we have eight, we have six service techs, two secretaries.
- 4:23knows something about what he's doing because he's got a customer base.
- 4:27He's selling his customer base.
- 4:29It's not just the tools that he has, it's the customer base that surrounds his business.
- 4:33It's worth something.
- 4:35And without it, he does not have any business.
- 4:37He can't feed his family.
- 4:38He can't support himself.
- 4:43So where are your contacts?
- 4:45So where are they?
- 4:46So the church, the plumber understands it.
- 4:49Diploma, he lives by it.
- 4:52Walmart gets it, FedEx gets it, Chick-fil-A gets it.
- 4:56How do we develop that?
- 4:58So that's step number one.
- 4:59So our school is based upon six simple steps, life steps, steps that everyone in this room practices in life.
- 5:07Because if you don't succeed here, you fail, you cannot function, you cannot support your family.
- 5:13Number two, you gotta prospect your contacts.
- 5:17The military knows how to do it.
- 5:21place their recruiting centers in high population areas.
- 5:25That's where they put recruiting centers.
- 5:27They want contacts.
- 5:28They're not gonna put them in a desert.
- 5:30They're gonna put them, not in Iuka, Sam, I'm sorry.
- 5:33They're gonna be somewhere else.
- 5:34And so they're gonna put that recruiting station where people are.
- 5:37That's contacts, they need them.
- 5:39When they finally find contacts, they're gonna prospect their contact.
- 5:42$20,000 signing bonus.
- 5:44I'll pay your college.
- 5:45All you gotta do is commit four years to us.
- 5:48Sign the dotted line, $20,000.
- 5:51So they're prospecting.
- 5:52Now know we're not going to offer $20,000 if you come to the Church of Christ, but the concept is they know how to prospect their contacts.
- 6:00know, Josh Hypol knows how to prospect his contacts.
- 6:03He brings them over to Thomas Bowlin Arena.
- 6:06I'm talking about football players, five-star recruits.
- 6:09I was there not long ago and I was watching a basketball game and the announcer comes on and he says, coming into the stadium now is Josh Hypol.
- 6:17They put a big light on him and he says, sitting next to him at the five,
- 6:21quarterback, signed him.
- 6:23He's coming.
- 6:25Now next year, he's gonna play.
- 6:26But how did Josh Hyple sign him?
- 6:29Listen to the crowd.
- 6:30Look at the people.
- 6:31Best fan base in America.
- 6:33He said, I want you to look at the history of this area.
- 6:36I want you to note the program we have.
- 6:38I want you to understand the commitment that we're willing to make for you.
- 6:42don't forget the NIL deal.
- 6:44We do have the money.
- 6:45They know how to prospect their recruits.
- 6:47If a football team doesn't know how to prospect their recruits, the football team loses.
- 6:52You gotta learn how to prospect.
- 6:55So there's my question, how do we prospect?
- 6:58Do we even know what the tools are?
- 7:00Do we know how Jesus did it?
- 7:01Because if we don't learn how to prospect our contacts, we're gonna fail.
- 7:05So now we gotta plant the seed.
- 7:07Every farmer knows how to fertilize and till up his soil.
- 7:10He gets the soil, he acquires the soil, those are contacts.
- 7:14And then he tills it up.
- 7:15He runs his discs through it.
- 7:17He runs a color packer through it.
- 7:18He gets the rocks out.
- 7:19He fertilizes, puts the nitrogen in there.
- 7:22He makes sure he gets everything ready.
- 7:24Isn't it interesting?
- 7:25Gardeners know how to do it.
- 7:26Farmers know how to do it.
- 7:27Josh Heidple knows how to do it.
- 7:30Church Christ doesn't know how to do it.
- 7:32We have no idea how to do any of this.
- 7:35We're not doing it, we're sitting in our pews, we have a sign out there that says come on in.
- 7:39They're not coming because the gospel of Jesus Christ is a commission that says go on out.
- 7:45And if we don't go out and get them, they're coming.
- 7:47Jesus said go out to the highways and the byways and these are his words, compel them.
- 7:53When's the last time you compelled anybody?
- 7:57Most of us are not a compelant or a repellent because of the way we treat people, because we don't know how to prospect people.
- 8:06Instead of a compelling, we're repelling and I would never go to that church if that's how they are.
- 8:12And so we've got to learn how to do step two.
- 8:14Now, those first two steps, they incorporate more than half of evangelism.
- 8:20I'd say 60 % of evangelism is in steps one and two.
- 8:24If you don't know how to do steps one and two, you lose.
- 8:27And so we're gonna focus on steps one and two.
- 8:31She walked down the aisle and she had a piece of paper in her hand and I went to the church and I said, church, I need help.
- 8:38I said, I didn't grow up in Collegereville.
- 8:40I don't live in Collegereville.
- 8:42I don't work in this area.
- 8:44I didn't go to school in this area.
- 8:46I don't know people.
- 8:48And I said, church, I need your help.
- 8:50I need to know who you know.
- 8:52I need to know the people that you live next to.
- 8:54I need to know the people you're friends with and your sphere of influence.
- 8:58So it doesn't matter if it's in Collegereville, wherever it is you live, that's your neighbor.
- 9:02And I need to know who they are.
- 9:04And I specifically want to know who they are when they have a life event.
- 9:08event I want you to bring me their name so if they get sick I want their name if they have a if they just had a baby I want their name if they just got married I want their name if
- 9:16get a divorce I want their name depression I want their name surgery I want their name funeral want their name whatever life event they go through I want you to bring me their
- 9:27name and if you'll do that I'll help you bring them to Christ good deal
- 9:32Brandy Fleming was the first one.
- 9:33She walks down the aisle, she has a piece of paper in her hand, she says, Rob, I know somebody.
- 9:37Her name's Sharon Fisher.
- 9:38I said, great, Brandy.
- 9:39She said, Rob, she's disgruntled right now, she just had surgery.
- 9:43She said, I think we can reach her.
- 9:44Now everybody open up the Evangelism Simplified Guidebook to page 105.
- 9:48This is when the church gets busy.
- 9:50This entire lesson is for the membership.
- 9:52This isn't for Aaron, this is for you.
- 9:54Page 105.
- 9:56And this is the only time Aaron can keep his book closed and you can open your book.
- 10:00Because this is about the membership.
- 10:02105, we need to know who they are.
- 10:04I need to know the prospects because this is the, this is the, this is kind of the bottleneck of the mission work.
- 10:12If you don't do this, it fails.
- 10:14We need to know who you know so we can bring them to Christ.
- 10:18So we put on the list Sharon Fisher.
- 10:20Look at, says name, Sharon Fisher.
- 10:22Let's look at description.
- 10:23She's a friend of Brandy Fleming.
- 10:24Let's look at a relationship.
- 10:28Again, friend of Brandy Fleming, description, she's disgruntled, she needs encouragement.
- 10:32Listen to the address, put it on there, and let's hit that little box that says multiple, meaning that every member of the Church of Christ is going to reach out to, we're all
- 10:45reach out to Sharon Fisher.
- 10:46Erin, I know your wife, Erin, finds you irresistible.
- 10:51I know she does.
- 10:52That's why she married you.
- 10:53Erin, look at me, I don't.
- 10:57Okay, I can resist you, Erin.
- 10:58Now, I want you to listen, Church.
- 11:02You can resist one person.
- 11:06but you won't resist to call your village Church of Christ.
- 11:10We're not gonna just try to save Sharon with Brandy Fleming.
- 11:13We're gonna try to reach Sharon with the entire Willette Church of Christ.
- 11:17Everybody's gonna try to reach Sharon Fisher.
- 11:20And so this is a different approach.
- 11:21It's a congregational approach.
- 11:23Now when I started this seminar in 2018, I called it a personal evangelism seminar.
- 11:30I don't call it a personal evangelism seminar anymore.
- 11:34About four years ago, I changed the name of it to a congregational evangelism seminar because I learned that evangelism is not about me, it's about us.
- 11:44Evangelism is not about you, it's about everyone.
- 11:47And if we don't get everybody participating, we fail.
- 11:49And so evangelism isn't about just one person, it's about the entire Church of Christ reaching out.
- 11:55And I knew that.
- 11:56but I didn't market it correctly.
- 11:58Because as soon as I say personal evangelism, you check out.
- 12:02it's a preacher's job.
- 12:04that's not what I do.
- 12:06I'm not very good at that.
- 12:08Aaron, Josh, that's for you and you can do that, but I'm gonna let somebody else do that personal evangelism stuff.
- 12:16Well, let me be clear.
- 12:17What we read about in the Bible is not personal evangelism, it's congregational evangelism.
- 12:22It's when you get everybody in the church involved, everybody has skin in the game, no one shakes out, no one says, well, that's not my responsibility.
- 12:31Let me be clear.
- 12:33It is the responsibility of the entire Collierville Church of Christ to reach the
- 12:38period.
- 12:40You can't put that on the back of your preacher or you will break him.
- 12:45You know we have something called preacher fatigue today.
- 12:48You know what that means?
- 12:50Preacher fatigue is when preachers burn out because they can't carry the church on their back.
- 12:55They just can't do it and if they don't get the help they just finally give up and they say hey I'm tired of it.
- 13:01I just can't do it anymore.
- 13:03And so that's because we have a pastoral model.
- 13:06And we don't call him pastors, that would be unscriptural.
- 13:09But we do everything but that.
- 13:12We expect them to do it for us.
- 13:14And so this paradigm that I'm trying to build as we come to churches is a different paradigm.
- 13:19It's a paradigm that doesn't revolve around Aaron.
- 13:21It doesn't revolve around Justin.
- 13:24It revolves around everybody.
- 13:26Jacob.
- 13:29Justin.
- 13:31Very good, thank you.
- 13:32right, it revolves around everybody.
- 13:34And so this is very important.
- 13:36So I went to the church and I said, church, let's build a prospect list.
- 13:40Who went on it?
- 13:41Sharon Fisher.
- 13:41Now, what are we gonna do?
- 13:43Compassion cards, lots of cards.
- 13:45And we've tested this over and over again and we know exactly how to do this because we've done it for years with 325 churches.
- 13:53What does that mean?
- 13:54That means that you're going to send cards, two to three cards every single day for three to four weeks to your prospects.
- 14:01cards are going to be designed to prospect your contact.
- 14:04That's the second step.
- 14:06And so we're going to open their hearts, fertilize, till, love them.
- 14:10We're not going to offer a signing bonus.
- 14:12Okay, that's not what we do, but we can offer grace, compassion, forgiveness, love, joy.
- 14:19We can offer the very Christian graces, the fruits of the spirit, because that's what really people want.
- 14:25People can get money, but what they can't get is your time.
- 14:28People, you know, they can get stuff, but what they can't get is
- 14:31forgiveness and grace and they need that in their life and we will provide it.
- 14:37So what we want you to do is send two to three cards every day to every prospect for three to four weeks.
- 14:43So what's gonna happen when you do that?
- 14:45You're gonna open up the heart.
- 14:47Now there's always a penny pincher in the group and all they can think about is the money.
- 14:52And so what they're going to think about is this, but that's going to cost a lot of money.
- 14:56And so if we had one card, we could sign it with 25 signatures, and it works just as good.
- 15:01On what basis do you say that?
- 15:04Okay, what study have you done?
- 15:06Because we have done the studies and we have learned that that does not work.
- 15:09You will not move the needle doing that.
- 15:11You're just checking a box.
- 15:12And if you want to check a box and say, I've done it, don't ask me to come.
- 15:16Okay, so we know what works.
- 15:18Two to three cards per day, per prospect, three to four weeks.
- 15:21Now if you do that, you're gonna move the needle.
- 15:24You're gonna get their attention.
- 15:26You're gonna have an opportunity to reach their souls.
- 15:29Now, that's what we do with Jimmy and Sharon Fisher.
- 15:32They're our first test subject.
- 15:34You know what happens when they got those cards?
- 15:36They were overwhelmed by your love.
- 15:38They couldn't believe it.
- 15:39went to Brandy.
- 15:40Brandy, that church that's praying for me, that church is sending me cards.
- 15:45Brandy, I've never felt so much love.
- 15:48Brandy, can you tell that church, Brandy, what can I do to thank that church?
- 15:53He said,
- 15:55Visit, come visit.
- 15:57She said, I'll be there.
- 15:58Sure enough on Sunday morning, that's exactly what happened.
- 16:01They walked through the doors.
- 16:02My wife and I got to introduce ourselves.
- 16:04It's Sharon Fisher.
- 16:05I said, Sharon, we're so glad you're here.
- 16:07She said, are you the preacher?
- 16:08I said, yes ma'am.
- 16:09She said, preacher, would you thank the church for all the cards they've been sending?
- 16:14I said, I'd be glad to.
- 16:15I said, church, this morning we are visiting Jimmy and Sharon Fisher and they want to thank you for all the cards you've sent.
- 16:21After services.
- 16:23We walked up to him and said, Jimmy and Sharon, we happen to have this little custom here at Willette.
- 16:27They said, well, what is it?
- 16:28I said, we always invite visitors out to eat.
- 16:31I said, we'd like to take you out to eat our treat.
- 16:34Would you like to go?
- 16:35Jimmy said, well, I like to eat.
- 16:37I said, good, Jimmy.
- 16:38I said, let's go eat.
- 16:39Who doesn't like to eat?
- 16:40Brother, when a steak costs $20, everybody wants to go out to eat, especially when you're paying for it.
- 16:45And so we just took him out to eat.
- 16:47I do this.
- 16:48do.
- 16:48My family does this all the time.
- 16:50This is our MO, right?
- 16:53took them out to eat, we got around the table, we just talked.
- 16:57Jimmy and Shane, where you from?
- 16:59Those are called the introductory questions.
- 17:00I'm pretty robotic, I do the same thing every time.
- 17:03You know why?
- 17:03Because it works.
- 17:05When I find something that works, why change it?
- 17:07The crescent wrench has worked since we invented it.
- 17:10That's why it's still called the crescent wrench.
- 17:12It hasn't changed, men.
- 17:14Of course you do have that eight inch to ten inch and six inch, but we've never changed a crescent wrench.
- 17:19It's always a crescent wrench.
- 17:21I just keep doing what I do.
- 17:23I said, where are from?
- 17:24I'm from a local boy.
- 17:25I said, good, Jimmy.
- 17:27I said, tell me about being a local boy.
- 17:29He told me all about it.
- 17:30I said, Sharon, where are you from?
- 17:31I'm from the bayou.
- 17:33I learned everything there was to know about Louisiana in 45 minutes.
- 17:37I mean, she told me everything.
- 17:39And so much that I couldn't get the question to.
- 17:42That's all right.
- 17:43It's okay.
- 17:44So we finished the dinner.
- 17:45And I said, Jimmy and Sharon, we surely enjoyed being with you.
- 17:48Well, we did too.
- 17:49I said, I hope we'll see you again.
- 17:51you will.
- 17:51I said,
- 17:53I got to church Sunday night and I said, hey church, it worked.
- 17:56I said, this is working.
- 17:57I said, thank you for sending cards.
- 17:59Now, I want everybody to go back to the card room and send the compassion cards and say thank you for coming, come back soon.
- 18:05And we're gonna flood them with cards, more cards.
- 18:07We're gonna send cards every single day, some on Monday, some on Tuesday, some on Wednesday, some on Thursday, some on Friday, equally distributed.
- 18:14And we're gonna make sure they get the cards every day.
- 18:16And we're gonna do it for three to four weeks.
- 18:19Now, what happens when you do that?
- 18:22to come back.
- 18:23That's what happens.
- 18:24They're gonna come back.
- 18:25In fact, I was sitting in my living room one evening and I got a message from Brandy Fleming.
- 18:31I saved the message.
- 18:32You know why?
- 18:33Because I knew it was a teaching moment.
- 18:34I told Nicole right then, I Nicole, this is working.
- 18:37I said, I'm gonna save this.
- 18:39Someday I might even use it in teaching.
- 18:41I received a message from Sharon's husband, Jimmy.
- 18:44She said, Rob, he and Sharon received at least four cards a day thanking them for visiting or wishing Sharon well.
- 18:50He said, Rob, it's just the type of church they've been looking for, one that would take
- 18:53or Sharon if anything ever happened to him.
- 18:55Now Rob, he says he's still praying and trying to let God lead him to where he needs to be.
- 19:00Now Rob, I try to be very encouraging.
- 19:02I even offer to have a Bible study sometimes.
- 19:04Rob, I wasn't expecting him to message me back so quickly with the question, do you have to be a member there to take communion?
- 19:10Now Rob, if he's asking that question, doesn't he need to know a whole lot more?
- 19:14Any suggestions?
- 19:16Suggestion number one, do not answer that question.
- 19:20That's my first suggestion.
- 19:24I typed it and hit sin before I wrote anything else.
- 19:27I please don't answer that question.
- 19:29I said, because if you answer the question, you won't have a Bible study.
- 19:32Don't chase the rabbit.
- 19:35You're not going to convert someone by having a discussion about the Lord's Supper.
- 19:40That is not what you need to be doing.
- 19:43I said, don't answer that.
- 19:45I said, well, you can discuss it with him.
- 19:47Don't answer it.
- 19:48said, Brandy, I said, can you get them to come back to church?
- 19:52He said, yes.
- 19:53I said, we need to take them to step two.
- 19:55They came back to church.
- 19:57After church, Nicole and I walked up.
- 19:58I said, hey, Jimmy is here.
- 19:59And I said, we got a little custom here.
- 20:01Another one?
- 20:02I said, yes.
- 20:03I said, my wife is the best cook in Macon County.
- 20:06I said, my daughter, best dessert maker you'll ever meet.
- 20:09I said, why don't you guys come over to the house?
- 20:11We'll get to know you and have some good food.
- 20:14they said, Jimmy says, well, I like to eat.
- 20:15I said, me too, Jimmy.
- 20:17And I said, don't y'all come?
- 20:18Tuesday, they came.
- 20:20Walked in our house.
- 20:21We sit down.
- 20:21We're talking.
- 20:23We're going to go through the rest of the introductory questions.
- 20:26Question number two.
- 20:28Jimmy, what do do for a living?
- 20:29He I'm a security guard at Bonnell.
- 20:32So Lumen and in fact, they're down there in I-40.
- 20:34I said, I get it.
- 20:35I said, tell me some stories.
- 20:36He's not a big talker.
- 20:37It's OK.
- 20:39Sharon Fisher, Sharon, what do you do for a living?
- 20:42I'm a kindergarten teacher.
- 20:44That's all that needed to be said for the next 45 minutes.
- 20:47I heard about every child in the classroom.
- 20:49Nothing was left out.
- 20:52so I mean, I never got to question three.
- 20:55And so we go to the dinner table.
- 20:56We're having a beautiful meal, best food in the county.
- 21:00And we're just having a good time exactly where I want them.
- 21:04It always happens.
- 21:06All you gotta do is feed them.
- 21:07You don't have to ask any religious questions, you just feed them.
- 21:10They'll bring it up.
- 21:11Hey Rob, yeah?
- 21:13Could we talk to you for just a minute?
- 21:15I said, sure, what's going on?
- 21:19Rob, uh.
- 21:21She said, I want you to know first we're religious.
- 21:24Well, I thought you were.
- 21:25I said, you good people.
- 21:27She said, we got that big community church down there at Westmoreland.
- 21:29I said, I know the one.
- 21:31I said, she said, Rob, we work in their children's home during the summer in Honduras.
- 21:35I said, well, that's wonderful.
- 21:37And she said, I'm a Bible class teacher too.
- 21:39teach that.
- 21:39I said, Sharon, that's great.
- 21:41And she said, since I've been sick two months ago, I haven't got one card, one phone call or one visit from my church.
- 21:49She says, don't even know where my preacher lives.
- 21:52I said, I'm sorry, Sharon.
- 21:54I said, I can see how that would be just difficult.
- 21:58mean, she says, Rob, no one cares about me except y'all.
- 22:03He said, complete strangers writing me cards every day encouraging me, people praying for me.
- 22:09She says, you guys are different.
- 22:12I said, well, Sharon, we care about you.
- 22:13We really do.
- 22:14And she said, I can see it.
- 22:16I know you do.
- 22:17I said, y'all have gone out of your way.
- 22:19And Rob, this is our first time.
- 22:21I said, first time for what?
- 22:23She says, in all the years Jimmy and I have been married, no one has ever invited us into their home, not once.
- 22:31Wow.
- 22:33That's when things begin to, I begin to realize people are lonely.
- 22:38I I grew up in a home where my mother constantly invited people over to the house.
- 22:42I just thought that's what we do.
- 22:44But you know today, are a lot of, when's the last time you had a center in your house?
- 22:48When's the last time you just had a meal?
- 22:50You ladies, cooked a nice meal.
- 22:52You invited them over just to get to know them.
- 22:55We don't do that anymore.
- 22:57I began to realize that this is opening a door.
- 23:00I said, this is great.
- 23:01said, Jimmy, sure, we've enjoyed this.
- 23:02I mean, just love this.
- 23:04I said, I tell you what.
- 23:05I said, we've enjoyed it so much.
- 23:06Why don't y'all come back next week?
- 23:08And Jimmy said, will she cook another meal?
- 23:10I said, yes, Jimmy.
- 23:11I said, what would you like?
- 23:12He said, I love lasagna.
- 23:14I said, it's her specialty, Jimmy.
- 23:15At least it became the specialty.
- 23:17and so, in any way, they came back the next week.
- 23:20And sure enough, Nicole made the lasagna.
- 23:22makes the dessert, chocolate chip cookies.
- 23:25I love it.
- 23:25And so, we're all sitting around just
- 23:28I'm a great time.
- 23:29I'm going to help him.
- 23:32Hey Jimmy, I said, this nation's in trouble.
- 23:35He said, yes.
- 23:37I said, what's wrong with our nation, Jimmy?
- 23:38Tell me what you think's He said, Rob, it's the morals.
- 23:41it is.
- 23:42I agree with that.
- 23:43Well, tell me about that, Jimmy.
- 23:44Why are the morals so bad?
- 23:46Rob, don't you know we've forgotten God?
- 23:48I said, we have, have we?
- 23:49I said, Jimmy, tell me about God.
- 23:51He said, now, Rob, it's all in the Bible.
- 23:53I said, what do you know about the Bible?
- 23:55He said, Rob, it's in the book of Revelation.
- 23:58I said, well, what about it?
- 23:59He said, Rob, it's Armageddon.
- 24:01Battle of Megiddo, 144,000.
- 24:04Rob, pestilence, rapture, it's coming, Rob.
- 24:07You gotta get ready.
- 24:08Haven't you read the Left Behind series?
- 24:11Now we did that in 60 seconds.
- 24:13Brother, how many of you wanna start a Bible study out in the book of Revelation, anybody?
- 24:17Because I don't.
- 24:18And I said, Jimmy, the book of Revelation says a lot of things.
- 24:22said, thankfully, Jimmy, I said, I do have the answer to all the problems you just gave.
- 24:28what hard bay.
- 24:29said, Jimmy, I tell you what, I just so happen to have, let me see if I have them.
- 24:34These are the booklets are called Back to the Bible.
- 24:36And I said, Jimmy, why don't we go right over here to the table?
- 24:39said, in fact, we just so happen to have some Bibles and pins, John 832, when we started the Bible study.
- 24:46I do this a lot.
- 24:47I don't ask people for Bible studies.
- 24:49I earn them.
- 24:50You've eaten my food.
- 24:52You're in my house.
- 24:53You'll do the study.
- 24:55You'll do the study.
- 24:56We just sat around the table and we started it.
- 24:59We went through the study and we loved it.
- 25:01At the end of the study, Sharon Fisher, she makes a little fish, she gets a little bit upset, she hits the table and I looked at Sharon and I said, Sharon, you upset?
- 25:10Yes, I am upset.
- 25:12I said, Sharon, what just happened?
- 25:13You guys, I want to know.
- 25:17church all my life and I've learned more about the Bible in this one study than I have learned my whole life.
- 25:22I didn't even know there was a difference between the Old and New Testament.
- 25:29You get it don't you?
- 25:30Because most people have never done a Bible study in their life.
- 25:33They've never done a Bible study.
- 25:35You want to know why they're lost?
- 25:36They've never studied the Bible.
- 25:38No one has invited them to their home.
- 25:40No one has gone to a study.
- 25:41They don't know their left hand from their right hand.
- 25:45I said, hey guys, I said, I'll tell you what.
- 25:47I said, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
- 25:49I said, by the way, would y'all like to come back for another meal and a study?
- 25:52And Jimmy said, would she cook any more of those desserts?
- 25:55I said, yes, Jimmy, what would you like?
- 25:56He said, peanut butter pie.
- 25:58I said, it's her specialty.
- 26:00Yes, we will have peanut butter pie.
- 26:02So Hannah makes a peanut butter pie, Nicole makes one of her nice meals.
- 26:05We have a great meal, we sit down, and then we do the second study, and they loved it.
- 26:10They enjoyed it.
- 26:11Couldn't have gone.
- 26:13So then they come back for the third meal, the third dessert, and the third study, and we do it again.
- 26:19Guess what happens when people study the Bible?
- 26:24They're baptized.
- 26:27Brethren, you show me a church that's doing Bible studies in their homes, I'll show you a church that's having baptisms.
- 26:33You show me a church that's not doing this, I'll show you a church that's dead.
- 26:37I'll show you a dying church.
- 26:39Because this is how churches grow.
- 26:42It's when the members realize the enormous potential you have.
- 26:48Ladies, you have an ability that you don't even realize because most people haven't had a home cooked meal in six months.
- 26:56And if you don't think you can cook, I got a suggestion for you.
- 26:59Go to the KFC, get the bucket, put it in a platter, they'll never know.
- 27:04You've been doing it at Pharris Hook Meals for years.
- 27:07We still haven't figured it out.
- 27:09We just think you make good fried chicken.
- 27:12Let me share with you what happened.
- 27:14Look, I want you to look at Miss Sharon Fisher after that Bible study.
- 27:17She is doing a Bible study in Jamaica.
- 27:22Within one year of her conversion.
- 27:24On the other side is Richard Pratt from this morning, he's doing a Bible study.
- 27:28On the other side is Jimmy Fischer, he's doing it.
- 27:30I want to know how we've got brand new Christians that know enough to do a Bible study and those of us who've been in the pews for 30 years, we don't know enough.
- 27:42Shame on you.
- 27:46We should be ashamed.
- 27:48We know plenty.
- 27:50We know more than they know.
- 27:52So what did I learn?
- 27:53People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.
- 27:56That's what I learned.
- 27:57My wife taught me this lesson.
- 27:59there was ever a time when I needed to listen to my wife who was during this stage of the development of evangelism, that she brings something to the table I just don't have.
- 28:10She taught me to slow down, to get to know people, eat with them, care about them, be genuine and authentic, and you'll get the Bible study.
- 28:20So where do we find that in the scriptures?
- 28:22Well, it's all through the life of Christ.
- 28:24I mean, think about the people Jesus spent time with, the leper, the blind, the hulk, the main, the poor, the women at the well, even John 2, the wedding feast.
- 28:35That's a life event, by the way.
- 28:38Have you ever noticed that Jesus focused on the life events?
- 28:41And when there was a life event, he's there.
- 28:44It's hard to get people when there's not a life event.
- 28:47Remember the rich young ruler?
- 28:48Hard to get to him, isn't it?
- 28:50Not having a life event, everything's good.
- 28:52Hard to help people when things are good.
- 28:54And he turned away and was sad at the same time, for he had great possessions.
- 28:58The greatest teacher in the world couldn't get to him.
- 29:01So I wanna know, who do you know having a life event right now?
- 29:06Who's depressed?
- 29:08Who's going through some difficult times in their life?
- 29:12Who's having surgery?
- 29:13Who's just lost a loved one?
- 29:15Does this church know anybody like that?
- 29:17If you know someone right now, a neighbor, friend, or family that's going through a life event, raise your hand.
- 29:24It's not hard.
- 29:26All we've got to do is have a plan, and we've got to care.
- 29:28But that's gotta come from your church.
- 29:30This is not gonna be organic.
- 29:32So I can't just teach a lesson and all of a sudden we're just gonna start converting people.
- 29:35No, there's gotta be a process involved.
- 29:37There's gotta be training that takes place.
- 29:40We've gotta make sure the membership understands what we're trying to do.
- 29:43And in the early church, that's what they did.
- 29:45Praising God and having the favor with the people.
- 29:48The church was a favorable place.
- 29:51People loved the church of Christ.
- 29:54Why?
- 29:55the Church of Christ.
- 29:56Well, because they garnered the faith, they were a graceful people.
- 30:00They were a kind people.
- 30:02The Pharisees were not the church people.
- 30:03People didn't like the Church of the Pharisees.
- 30:06They didn't like the denomination of the Sadducees.
- 30:08They didn't like the denomination of the Zealots.
- 30:10You know when they took Judaism and they denominated it?
- 30:14You just couldn't be a Jew.
- 30:15You had to be a Pharisee Jew or a Sadducee Jew or a Zealot Jew or an Essing Jew.
- 30:20It's not hard to apply this if you just think.
- 30:23What have they done to Christianity today?
- 30:26Why they denominated it.
- 30:28I just want to be a Christian, that's all I want to be.
- 30:31Jesus just wanted to be a Jew, didn't he?
- 30:33That's all wanted to be.
- 30:34Well, oh Jesus, we want you to be a Pharisee.
- 30:36He said, no.
- 30:37We want you to be a Sadducee.
- 30:39No.
- 30:39Then they both ganged up on him and crucified him because they were envious because he wouldn't join their sect.
- 30:48We're not joining any sects in the Church of Christ.
- 30:50We're just Christians, we love people, and we want to help them see the cross.
- 30:55And so what did the church in the early century do?
- 30:58They sold their possessions.
- 31:00They gave things away.
- 31:01They were, they were benign.
- 31:05as many as were possessors of lands and houses sold them.
- 31:10And distribution was made to every man according as he had need.
- 31:15Jesus increased in wisdom and stature in favor with God and, there's your word, favor.
- 31:22Favor with God and man.
- 31:24Did people like Jesus?
- 31:26They loved him.
- 31:27Why?
- 31:28Because he was favorable.
- 31:29He was graceful, he was kind, he was compassionate, he listened to people.
- 31:33Some said, preacher, what you're saying today is just too hard.
- 31:37just can't do this today.
- 31:39This isn't gonna work in Calderville.
- 31:41It works with every human being on earth.
- 31:45Everybody, everybody wants people to listen.
- 31:49If there's one characteristic about every human being on the face of this earth from Antarctica to the North Pole, here it is.
- 31:55Everybody likes to talk about themselves.
- 31:58I mean, everybody, everybody loves to talk.
- 32:00And if you can just listen to people, they'll talk.
- 32:03And in fact, I would suggest that our society today is more susceptible to favor than any society on the face of this earth in history.
- 32:12You know why?
- 32:12Because we are lonely.
- 32:14How do I know that?
- 32:16I'll show you how I know that.
- 32:19That's how I know we're lonely.
- 32:22Because when God created you, he created you to be a social creature.
- 32:26That's how I know it.
- 32:28Genesis 2, 18, God formed you out of the dust of the ground.
- 32:32He breathed into your nostrils the breath of life.
- 32:34Man became a living soul.
- 32:36In Genesis 2, 18, the Bible says that man was lonely.
- 32:40And God said, I will make a help meet for you.
- 32:43We don't do well alone.
- 32:48Sociologists don't know what to call it, but there's a phenomenon going on right now in our culture, and they don't know what to call it.
- 32:56You know what it is?
- 32:59Social media has changed completely how we socialize with people.
- 33:05because it's created an artificial socialization network where we can artificially try to fill that void.
- 33:12But what we're finding is that you can have 5,000 Facebook friends, but you're still lonely.
- 33:18Because Facebook can't fix this.
- 33:21Twitter or X can't fix this.
- 33:23Truth social can't fix this.
- 33:26Instagram can't fix this.
- 33:28Because what people need is a warm-blooded human being to talk to.
- 33:33And we don't have it.
- 33:36Most people, all they get is that.
- 33:39So how do we fix it?
- 33:40I'll give you four things.
- 33:41Y'all ready to write these down?
- 33:42Four things you can do to fix it.
- 33:44So if you want to fill the void, and there's a vacuum, there's a void, and a void is a vacuum is always filled.
- 33:50That's why these social media companies are billion dollar companies, a fill and a void, a vacuum.
- 33:55Someone's gonna fill it, but I can just guarantee what we have is far better than what Mark Zuckerberg has.
- 34:02We've got something far better than that.
- 34:05All you gotta do is sit down with them, talk to them, and listen to them.
- 34:09First thing you gotta do is open up your house.
- 34:12You gotta unlock the deadbolt, put out the welcome mat, and invite people in your home.
- 34:16Have people in your house and talk to them, or listen to them.
- 34:20I mean, use your home as a mission statement.
- 34:23Brother, we gotta understand it's biblical.
- 34:27Acts 5.42 and daily in the temple and every house, they cease not to preach and teach Jesus.
- 34:33Where did they do that?
- 34:34In their home.
- 34:34Acts 2, 46, and they continuing daily with one accord in the temple, breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with singleness and gladness of heart.
- 34:44Where did they do it?
- 34:45In their homes.
- 34:46Acts 20, 20, how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but I showed you publicly and from house to house.
- 34:52You've got to open up your homes.
- 34:55We cannot be successful if we do not share the blessing of a home with those who are outside of Christ.
- 35:02I want to get back on Wednesday.
- 35:04Guess what's going to happen Thursday in my home.
- 35:05My wife will open her home.
- 35:07Her and Hannah will bring in a stranger to do a Bible study on Thursday.
- 35:13We are in a hotel 200 nights a year.
- 35:15If my wife can do it, you can do it.
- 35:19And then on Friday, we're doing it again with another, another couple.
- 35:23Because we know when we have you in our home, you are baptized and you don't even know it yet.
- 35:30You're in my home now.
- 35:32And I'm love you like you've never been loved before.
- 35:35And I'm gonna show you the cross.
- 35:37And I'm gonna share with you the blood of Christ.
- 35:39Try to resist it.
- 35:40It's gonna be hard.
- 35:42But you know we don't do that in the church.
- 35:44You know what we do?
- 35:45Well they're going to come forward.
- 35:46They're not coming brother.
- 35:48They're not coming forward.
- 35:50All right?
- 35:50They're not, it doesn't work.
- 35:52What we've got to do is we've got to get people in a personal situation.
- 35:56All right?
- 35:57Where we can share that with them.
- 35:58And this is hard because we're all busy.
- 36:01We all get these insane schedules that we try to keep up with.
- 36:07And so yes, we're going to have to carve out time for your neighbor, carve out time for others.
- 36:12But I know that if I can ask my wife to do it and she can do it, everybody else can do it too.
- 36:16I know you can do this.
- 36:18It's just do you want to?
- 36:24Next, in Luke chapter 19, Zacchaeus made haste, come down from there, for there today I must abide at thine house.
- 36:31Why did Jesus want to go to the house of Zacchaeus?
- 36:34You think it was to learn more about Roman tax policy?
- 36:37I seriously doubt it.
- 36:40Why did Jesus want to go to his home?
- 36:43There's only one reason, to seek and save the lost.
- 36:47That's what it says in verse 10.
- 36:50How powerful is the home?
- 36:51Jesus knew it was powerful.
- 36:53Let's keep going, you want to see more?
- 36:54Luke 736, and one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him.
- 36:59He went into his house and he sat down to eat.
- 37:03Why did Jesus go into his house?
- 37:05Why not just do it on the street corner?
- 37:08Because it doesn't work well on the street corner.
- 37:11You ever seen these people preaching on the street corners?
- 37:13What do you consider them when you see them?
- 37:15They have mental disorders.
- 37:17Stay away, they're dangerous.
- 37:19It doesn't work, they may not, I don't know.
- 37:21But I know that when I'm busy going down the road, right, in my car, the last thing I'm gonna do is stop it and go up somebody in a street corner and listen to them.
- 37:29Okay, and let me give you another place it doesn't work.
- 37:33It doesn't work well here.
- 37:34Most visitors, when they walk in the church building, the first thing that goes up is called shields.
- 37:39They hear about fourth of what you say.
- 37:43Put them in your home, feed them.
- 37:46They'll listen.
- 37:48You know, we used to be good at this.
- 37:50How many of you older members remember a time, I'm to ask you to raise your hands if this fits, you remember a time when a visitor would come in, there would always be people ready
- 38:00to take him into their home to feed them.
- 38:02You all remember that?
- 38:03yeah, we used to be good at it.
- 38:05In fact, I'll just say this, today, in every, almost every country but ours, we still do that.
- 38:11Because my family has traveled, and I'll tell you, I'll go to a foreign country, and the first thing, come over to the house.
- 38:17I mean, she's completely unprepared.
- 38:20Now, you'll sit there for two hours as she prepares, and she will prepare.
- 38:23And then they do this commonly.
- 38:26We don't do that anymore.
- 38:28We better get back to it.
- 38:32Hospitality.
- 38:33So it's more than just your house.
- 38:34We gotta learn how to treat people once they're inside of it.
- 38:37We gotta learn how to relate to people.
- 38:38We gotta learn how to interact with people.
- 38:41We gotta learn how to socialize with people.
- 38:44Jesus increased in wisdom and stature that's intellectually and physically in favor with God, that's spiritually, and man, that's social.
- 38:51Never been a more social person than Jesus Christ.
- 38:56He's the most social person who's ever lived.
- 38:58People loved him.
- 39:00You gotta learn how to be social.
- 39:02And it came to pass, Jesus sat, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him.
- 39:06And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto the disciples, why eateth your Lord with publicans and sinners?
- 39:11Why would you do that, Jesus?
- 39:13I mean, you're thinking the name of Christ.
- 39:18I I can't believe you'd spend your time with sinners.
- 39:21Now want you to notice how Jesus responds.
- 39:26Jesus said, they that behold need not a physician, but they that are sick.
- 39:31Brethren, if we'd spend as much time with the loss as we do in our fellowship meals, people would be saved.
- 39:37We love to socialize with the brethren.
- 39:39I get it, I love you.
- 39:41I enjoy talking to you, but you're saved.
- 39:44I want to know about the people outside this building.
- 39:46I wanna know about the people that are lost.
- 39:48I wanna know about the people who need the cross.
- 39:52Jesus said, they that are whole, they don't need a physician, they don't understand.
- 39:55Don't learn what this means.
- 39:56I will have mercy and not sacrifice.
- 39:58Behold I've come to call not the righteous to repentance, but the sinners.
- 40:03We have got to learn how to do this.
- 40:06Another good example is Mary and Martha.
- 40:09What about Mary and Martha?
- 40:10Martha says, Jesus.
- 40:15Come over to the house.
- 40:17You come to our house, we'll take care of you.
- 40:19He walks inside the house and what does Mary do?
- 40:22Mary sees Jesus and Mary says, wow.
- 40:25Hey Lord, would you tell me about Abraham?
- 40:27Lord, tell me about the kingdom.
- 40:29Lord, tell me about Moses.
- 40:32Lord, tell me about heaven.
- 40:34And then of course there's Martha.
- 40:36Martha's in the house thinking, man, I got the Lord Jesus in my house.
- 40:39This is an incredible opportunity.
- 40:42oh no, the Lord is in this house.
- 40:46Oh, I've got dust bunnies in the corner.
- 40:48They've not been, oh no, I told my husband to sweep those out.
- 40:51Oh, my floors are not clean either.
- 40:53And my furniture's not been polished.
- 40:55And oh, I got the musty smell in the house.
- 40:56This is awful.
- 40:57think I'm a terrible house cleaner.
- 40:59What am I going to do?
- 41:00My silverware's not polished.
- 41:02This is just awful.
- 41:04I'm not a very good cook.
- 41:06I've to cook something and he's probably got a peanut allergy.
- 41:09I'm going to kill him.
- 41:14You know what Jesus said?
- 41:16Martha, Martha, thou art troubled about a great many things, but there's just one thing that matters.
- 41:26And your sister has chosen the good part and I won't take it away from her.
- 41:33How many things matter in life?
- 41:35How many things?
- 41:35One thing.
- 41:36There's just one thing that matters.
- 41:38Is it possible that we're majoring in the minors and minoring in the majors?
- 41:43Is it possible that we've become so self-fulfilled?
- 41:46We're more worried about pine saw on the furniture than we are about souls that are lost.
- 41:54Shame on us.
- 41:57Principle number three, we gotta learn to hearken.
- 41:59James 1.19, wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath.
- 42:06Let me give you a theological definition to this verse.
- 42:10You ready?
- 42:10This is deep.
- 42:12God gave you two ears and one mouth.
- 42:14You are to listen twice as much as you're to speak.
- 42:17Pretty good.
- 42:18I'm sad, I don't need Greek or Hebrew for that one.
- 42:21I just needed to listen to people.
- 42:23People want you to listen to them, so listen.
- 42:26So when Jimmy and Sharon were in our living room and Jimmy says, now Rob, it's all in the book of Revelation.
- 42:33Pretty important that I'm listening.
- 42:35Or when Sharon Fisher says, now Rob, in my first marriage.
- 42:39Kind of important that I listen to that, isn't it?
- 42:42or when they talk about their religious background.
- 42:45Important that I listen to that.
- 42:46Now is not the time for talking.
- 42:47Now is not the time for interrupting.
- 42:49And now is not the time for correction and instruction.
- 42:52Now is the time to listen.
- 42:54It's okay.
- 42:56We're not very good listeners sometimes.
- 42:57We wanna talk and.
- 42:59We try to teach them everything they need to know in the house and that's not good.
- 43:04We don't need to be teaching them anything.
- 43:06We just need to listen to them.
- 43:07Brother Bobby Bates, the great evangelist, once said, if you'll give them information, excuse me, quote, if you'll show them interest, they will give you information.
- 43:19All you gotta do is show them interest.
- 43:21And so just care.
- 43:23And they'll give you all the information you need.
- 43:25You don't even have to ask.
- 43:26They'll volunteer it.
- 43:27Nothing's off limits.
- 43:28In 1950, off limits.
- 43:30You don't talk about that.
- 43:322025, there's nothing off limits.
- 43:35They tell you everything.
- 43:36They will embarrass you.
- 43:37They will talk about things you wish they would not talk about.
- 43:40They're gonna ask you questions you wish they would not ask.
- 43:42And they're gonna use words that you don't even, you may have to give it some thought, words that you wouldn't even say, but they're gonna ask, because they don't have no
- 43:50filter.
- 43:50There are no filters in 2025.
- 43:52No filters.
- 43:54People just say what's on their mind.
- 43:56All right, so be prepared.
- 43:59What should you do?
- 44:00Listen.
- 44:01Don't comment, just listen.
- 44:03Just be sympathetic.
- 44:05Realize they're not where you're at.
- 44:06They don't know what you know.
- 44:08You should not expect them to.
- 44:09Don't correct them.
- 44:11They may not wear, you know, their most modest clothing all the time.
- 44:15They don't know.
- 44:15And so they may not use a language.
- 44:19You know, sometimes my wife and I are with people and they use language.
- 44:23It's very inappropriate.
- 44:24I would never use that language, but now's not the time for me to correct them because I have a goal to bring them to the cross and I need to give them a little space.
- 44:34All these things are important because I'm listening to people.
- 44:37Mark 4.24, and he said unto them, take heed what you hear.
- 44:42You know why?
- 44:43Because you're accountable for it.
- 44:47You're accountable for it.
- 44:48By the way, do know you're accountable for your neighbor?
- 44:52You're accountable for your coworkers?
- 44:54You're accountable for the people in your sphere of influence?
- 44:56You will give an accounting someday.
- 44:58That word accounting is, it's a frightening word.
- 45:02Accountants give an accounting of their.
- 45:07of their numbers, of their tally sheets.
- 45:10And if you're off at the end of the day at Walmart, if you're off, you're in trouble.
- 45:14You gotta find out where it's at.
- 45:16We're gonna find out who somebody's steal from us.
- 45:18We're gonna find out, I think there are Christians stealing from the living God every day.
- 45:27Look 18, take K, therefore how you hear?
- 45:29Let's come in the eyes.
- 45:33Don't play on your cell phone.
- 45:35Look them in the eyes, talk to them.
- 45:38Give them your undivided attention.
- 45:40Make sure they know you're sincere and you care.
- 45:43Go to principle number four, hesitate.
- 45:45It's our last one.
- 45:46Hesitate, you gotta learn how to hesitate.
- 45:49If we can learn how to hesitate, brethren, we know that if we can do this, we can hold back, we won't ruin the environment.
- 45:58We'll have a Bible study.
- 46:00What do mean by that?
- 46:01Well.
- 46:02Sometimes it's just not the right time.
- 46:05When Sharon Fisher said, now Rob, in my first marriage, hesitate preacher.
- 46:11Now's not the time to talk about marriage, divorce, and remarriage.
- 46:17When Jimmy said, now Rob, he said, when Jesus comes about, don't you know about the earthquakes, the tsunamis, and the volcanoes?
- 46:24Brethren, most people don't know enough about the first coming, much less the second.
- 46:29Why in the world are we engaging people on the second coming when we haven't even got them to the cross?
- 46:35All right, stop doing that.
- 46:37Hesitate.
- 46:38It's now is not the time.
- 46:40And so there's ample evidence in the life of Christ where he'd said, not yet.
- 46:44I'm not gonna do it just now.
- 46:46Tell no man.
- 46:48Holds his peace.
- 46:49He wrote on the ground as though he heard them not.
- 46:51Why?
- 46:52Because it's not the right time.
- 46:55Timing's important, isn't it?
- 46:57Husbands, do you ever pick the right time to talk to your wife about things?
- 47:02You ever know when not to talk to her?
- 47:06Any husband who's been married for any length of time knows that one.
- 47:09How about wives?
- 47:10You know when to talk to your husband and when not to?
- 47:12All right, so there times you shouldn't talk to him?
- 47:15Maybe when he's exhausted.
- 47:16Now's not the right time, right?
- 47:19And so, how about our children, mothers and fathers?
- 47:22Do know there are times to talk to your children and times not to talk to them?
- 47:25Of course!
- 47:27So I just always find this fascinating.
- 47:30Mothers get it, fathers get it, husbands get it, wives get it, the boss gets it, the employee gets it, but what about the Christian?
- 47:35Do we get it?
- 47:38We better.
- 47:40We better learn those lessons.
- 47:42Because they're going to bring up their doctrine.
- 47:44They're going to bring up the tongue speaking.
- 47:46They're going to bring up Mount Miracle, Mount Version.
- 47:49Rather than instead of climbing Mount Version, let's climb Mount Conversion.
- 47:54Why are we climbing Mount Version?
- 47:55We just met these people.
- 47:57Now is not the time to talk about the different versions of the Bible.
- 48:01Let it go.
- 48:03We're not talking about elders and preachers.
- 48:04We're talking about people who are not even Christians yet.
- 48:07Do you really want to climb Mount Versin and take out your sword and fight on it?
- 48:11Because that's what you're going to do.
- 48:16Don't climb Mount Miracle.
- 48:17Don't climb Mount Second Coming.
- 48:19Just leave it alone.
- 48:21I don't want you to climb Mount Sports Team.
- 48:23You know what's going to happen, don't you, brother?
- 48:25They're going to be Alabama fans.
- 48:28and you're going to have to like Alabama to get a Bible study.
- 48:31You can do it.
- 48:31I know it's hard, but I know you can do it.
- 48:34Go Crimson, my, go Crimson Tide.
- 48:37If I'm gonna do that to get a Bible study, so be it.
- 48:41Okay, you take a deep breath, you can do it.
- 48:44All right, Georgia.
- 48:45Mounts politics, they're gonna have a different political persuasion than you do.
- 48:49They're going down your, you
- 48:52And they're going to go, I mean it's going to be, you know, they're going to just assume you believe everything they believe.
- 48:57That's what Americans do.
- 48:58And they're just shocked that anybody believes any differently.
- 49:02Brethren, let me be clear.
- 49:05The Republican Party and the Democrat Party are not worth it.
- 49:09The parties aren't worth it.
- 49:13There's one party I'm a member of.
- 49:15It's called the Christian Party.
- 49:18And I'll take that one to my grave.
- 49:22We're not gonna let money divide us.
- 49:25Just be careful.
- 49:27So all these things you should probably hesitate a little bit.
- 49:30Just hold back.
- 49:32All right, you just need to have a sympathetic ear.
- 49:35You know, Jesus never let the Herodians divide him, did he?
- 49:39The political party.
- 49:40They tried.
- 49:41Jesus, should we give the taxes to Caesar?
- 49:44That was an attempt to divide Jesus by politics.
- 49:47He was smarter than that, didn't he?
- 49:50he's smart about this stuff.
- 49:52And Jesus, what about that old resurrection?
- 49:55Who's gonna be married in the resurrection?
- 49:57They thought they had him, didn't they?
- 50:00He wasn't biting on that.
- 50:02You know, if we would just follow his example and not bite on this stuff and allow this stuff to distract us, we hesitate, we hold back.
- 50:14You know, I've put four more lessons in your hands tonight.
- 50:19Four lessons, I said this morning, defer, don't debate.
- 50:22When they ask questions, just defer them.
- 50:25Number two, show them, don't tell them.
- 50:27Number three, plant, don't pick.
- 50:28Number four, open up your home.
- 50:30Number five, extend kindness and hospitality.
- 50:33Number six, harken and listen to people.
- 50:36Number seven, hesitate.
- 50:38Don't climb up a mountain unless you're willing to pull out your sword and fall on it.
- 50:44There's only one mountain I wanna climb this afternoon and it's called Mount Galgotha.
- 50:49and I'll climb that mountain with you.
- 50:52I'll take Calvary any day of the week.
- 50:54That's the mountain I want.
- 50:55And I'm so laser focused on it.
- 50:57And if I can take you to the cross, you'll become a Christian almost every time.
- 51:02But you know why they don't become Christians?
- 51:03Because we don't take them to the cross.
- 51:05We're too busy on Mount Tongues speaking.
- 51:09That's why we're losing.
- 51:11And we've got to learn how to be like Jesus.
- 51:14She came down the aisle and she had a piece of paper in her hand and...
- 51:18Man, it's building, will let.
- 51:19We've gone from 220 to 300, and the church has got it.
- 51:23And they bring those contacts to me, and they prospect them.
- 51:27And Brandy Fleming walked down there.
- 51:28One of the most evangelistic sisters I've ever met.
- 51:30Never conducted a Bible study to my knowledge, but she's evangelistic.
- 51:35And I grabbed a piece of paper and I said, Dustin McKinney.
- 51:38I said, wait a minute, you talking about the basketball coach, Dustin?
- 51:42She said, yeah.
- 51:44I said, Brandy, I coach basketball in Cookeville.
- 51:47I play Dustin in Red Bowling Springs.
- 51:52what's wrong with it?
- 51:55Robbie's got cancer, and it's not operable.
- 51:59I said, Brandy, Rob, I think we can prospect him.
- 52:04I said, I'll put him on the list.
- 52:05So we put him on the list, the church started praying for Dustin, sending cars to Dustin, and after about a week I grabbed my son Jared, said, Jared, let's go meet Dustin McKinney,
- 52:13let's go see him.
- 52:14And I went to the house, knocked on the door, he opened the door, I said, what's going on?
- 52:18I said, hey, Dustin, said, huh?
- 52:21We talked about the season a little bit, we play each other, and I said, Dustin, I said, I heard you had cancer, Dustin.
- 52:29Yeah.
- 52:31I'm sorry, man, I don't know how I'd feel right now, but I came to help you.
- 52:35He said, what can you do to help me?
- 52:36I said, I can pray.
- 52:38I said, would it be okay?
- 52:39My son came in, we just came to pray with you.
- 52:41He said, man, Rob, please pray for me.
- 52:43So we bowed our heads and prayed and I finished a prayer and I said, Dustin, I said, is it okay if I come back to pray again?
- 52:49He said, Rob, you can come back every day and pray.
- 52:51Don't worry, I will, because I have one mission and I never lose sight of my mission.
- 52:58A week later I grabbed one of the elders and I said, let's go visit Dustin McKinney.
- 53:02Went over to the house, knocked on the door and said, hey, Rob, what do you got there?
- 53:04I said, just a friend of mine, Steve Draper.
- 53:06Come on in, Steve Draper.
- 53:08Now I'm in the house.
- 53:10I have one mission.
- 53:12I sat in the living room.
- 53:13Now his little son, his name is, ready, ready, Neeland.
- 53:18Neeland is his name.
- 53:19He runs across the living room, little tight basketball, whoop.
- 53:24He's excited, we're talking about Tennessee, know, basketball.
- 53:27ball.
- 53:28Things are going good and I looked around the
- 53:34I saw your card.
- 53:36Thank you.
- 53:37I saw your card too.
- 53:40I saw yours.
- 53:42I saw yours.
- 53:43And their house is covered in cards.
- 53:46And I don't ask questions I don't know the answers to.
- 53:49I said, Dustin, where'd all these cards come from?
- 53:51That church I preach for, Rob, they send cards every day.
- 53:54Oh, they do.
- 53:56It's strategic.
- 53:59He says, Rob, those cards get me through the day.
- 54:00I can't tell you how much they mean to me.
- 54:02I said, well, Dustin, we're glad to pray for you and keep encouraging you.
- 54:06And I guess I noticed your lawn's getting a little tall out there.
- 54:09Rob, the doctor says, I can't get under the sun.
- 54:12They won't let me.
- 54:13I said, Dustin, you know what?
- 54:14Your lawn will be mowed every week by the Willette Church of Christ.
- 54:17Steve Draper, the elders over here.
- 54:19He said, will.
- 54:20Now, when you work with elders, it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission.
- 54:24It works very well.
- 54:26So anyway, so now we've got it all done.
- 54:29And so we were walking out of the house, we prayed, and we got to the church that night.
- 54:33The elder said, Rob, we need to see you.
- 54:36Uh-oh.
- 54:37And they said, Rob, we get it now.
- 54:41And I love these moments as a preacher, when the elders look at you and say, we get it.
- 54:46We want to help, Rob.
- 54:48I said, what do you want?
- 54:49Send a message to Dustin and Natalie.
- 54:52I said, what's the message, gentlemen?
- 54:53They said, you tell them we'll pay their highest medical bills, no questions asked.
- 54:59Wow.
- 55:01I said, are you sure you want me to say that?
- 55:03They said, yep.
- 55:04Don't tell anybody.
- 55:05Tell them this is not to be told.
- 55:06I said, yes, sir.
- 55:08So I went to their house.
- 55:09I told them, you ought to have seen the look on their face.
- 55:13And Natalie says, hey, Rob.
- 55:14He said, I don't know what to say.
- 55:16I said, it's OK.
- 55:17We love y'all.
- 55:17We care.
- 55:18Hey, Rob, we finally found a surgeon to do the surgery.
- 55:22I said, great.
- 55:23Where is he?
- 55:24said, Vanderbilt Hospital.
- 55:25I said, man, I'll be there.
- 55:26Rob, can't go to Vanderbilt.
- 55:27That's too far.
- 55:28I said, I'll be there.
- 55:30That morning I got up, I told my wife, I'll tell you all day honey, you what happens.
- 55:35I said just keep the church updated.
- 55:37want you to update.
- 55:38It's a day of prayer for Dustin McKinney.
- 55:40And I got to the hospital after the surgery.
- 55:43The surgeon comes out.
- 55:44He says McKinney family, I raise my hand.
- 55:50I've never seen anything like this, Miss McKinney." He said, it was worse than we thought, but I, Miss McKinney, I got it out.
- 55:59And I said, Doctor, can I pray?
- 56:00He said, you better, son.
- 56:02He said, I can't explain what just happened today.
- 56:05He said, but I think I got it.
- 56:09Two weeks later they called me and they said, hey Rob, we're filling up to it, you can come over.
- 56:13I loaded my family up, went to the house, I'm sitting at the living room surrounded by your cards and prayers and love.
- 56:21It's not hard.
- 56:23Hey Dustin, would you like to know more about Jesus?
- 56:26He said, Rob, I'd love to know more about Jesus.
- 56:28Good, I just so happen to have, let me see if I have them.
- 56:31These little booklets are called Back to the Bible.
- 56:40Can you send a card?
- 56:43Can you?
- 56:44Can you give me a name?
- 56:46Can you send a card?
- 56:47Can you?
- 56:49Who here can't help us?
- 56:51Who here is just gonna be a bystander?
- 56:54Brethren, it's time that we get some skin in the game.
- 56:57And everybody in this church needs to step up and help.
- 57:05We must earn the right to have a Bible study.
- 57:08Church, you've got to earn it.
- 57:10And you earn it together.
- 57:12You work together.
- 57:14And when you work together, train your members, it's gonna take a little time, equip them with tools, and then begin reaching out.
- 57:25You can grow.
- 57:28People are growing all over this country because of that.
- 57:30It's a great tool.
- 57:31It's not just one tool in our toolbox.
- 57:34Nicole wrote a book called Recipes for Evangelism and after this session we'll open that table up and you can take a look, but this is one of her books.
- 57:43She's only written one book and that book says this.
- 57:46Sharon Fisher wrote a chapter in it.
- 57:48So these are Sharon Fisher's words, not ours.
- 57:52The hospitality we were shown made all the difference to our willingness to get involved in a Bible study.
- 57:59Without my wife, there is no study.
- 58:03I can't do it without her.
- 58:08She's more than my best friend.
- 58:11She's far more than that.
- 58:14You want to learn how to reach the lost?
- 58:17You start working together.
- 58:19Husbands and wives work together.
- 58:22As a church, you're a widow or a widower, go to your preacher and say, I'll help you.
- 58:25Eddie's got three boys.
- 58:27Eddie, you need help cooking?
- 58:28I'll help cook.
- 58:29Eddie, you need help cleaning?
- 58:30I'll help clean.
- 58:32Work together, church.
- 58:33Help each other.
- 58:35I mean, there's so much that you can do right here in this church.
- 58:41So I'm thankful for your time and efforts.
- 58:45This afternoon you're here, that means you love souls and I'm gonna offer the invitation.
- 58:50If you're a child of God and maybe now's the time to make a change in your life and maybe you need strength and wanna come before this church and ask the church to pray for you,
- 59:01maybe there's a church we all need to pray.
- 59:04Render our hearts and not our garments.
- 59:07Make this an inward change, not an outward change.
- 59:10Change my life, God.
- 59:11Help me be the Christian I need to be to my neighbor.
- 59:15Maybe you're not a Christian and maybe someone taught you and you've not obeyed the gospel.
- 59:21This invitation is yours.
- 59:22All you gotta do is come, we'll take your confession, we'll baptize you into Christ for the remission of your sins.
- 59:28You'll be added to the greatest army in the world, the army of Christ.
- 59:34So Jesus came to seek and save the lost.
- 59:38God help us be like Jesus.
- 59:40Will you come as we together stand.
