- 0:10Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Wednesday, it is the
- 0:1521st of August. And you, you clever thing, you
- 0:19have tapped on play. But here I am so that you and I
- 0:22can continue reading through the Bible just a chapter a day,
- 0:27because that's what we do. And today or today is full of
- 0:31controversy. Today has got some verses in
- 0:35that sound awfully sexist and people have struggled with them.
- 0:40But I think it's probably fair to say, reading through
- 0:44commentaries, that the general consensus is the advice that
- 0:48Paul gives about women covering their heads and and gender
- 0:52differences in worship was not so much to set up an instruction
- 0:56about how women are to be treated moving forward
- 0:59throughout time in God's church. But it was at that time what he
- 1:03was suggesting would ensure that the focus was not on the people
- 1:08worshipping, but on God. And these actions, as weird as
- 1:12they sound to our modern ears, would have been awfully
- 1:15acceptable and just the way to to blend in and be
- 1:19uncontroversial at the time. So that's why he says it.
- 1:22And then he goes on with these famous words of of institution
- 1:27about how we practise communion. So we are going to read this
- 1:30chapter chock a block full of both controversy and central
- 1:35teaching that our church uses. So let's get down to it, shall
- 1:39we? Let us read together First
- 1:41Corinthians Chapter 11. And you should imitate me, just
- 1:56as I imitate Christ. I'm so glad that you always keep
- 2:01me in your thoughts and that you are following the teaching as I
- 2:04passed on to you. But there is one thing I want
- 2:07you to know. The head of every man is Christ,
- 2:12and the head of woman is man and the head of Christ is God.
- 2:18A man dishonours his head if he covers his head while praying or
- 2:22prophesying. But a woman dishonours her head
- 2:25if she prays or prophecies without a covering on her head.
- 2:28For this is the same as shaving her head.
- 2:31Yes, if she refuses to wear a head covering, she should cut
- 2:35off all her hair, but since it is shameful for a woman to have
- 2:39her hair cut or her head shaved, she should wear a covering.
- 2:45A man should not wear anything on his head when worshipping.
- 2:48For man is made in God's image and reflects God's glory, and
- 2:53woman reflects man's glory. For the first man didn't come
- 2:57from woman, but the first woman came from man.
- 3:01And man was not made for woman, but woman was made for man.
- 3:06For this reason, and because the angels are watching, a woman
- 3:11should wear a covering on her head to show she is under
- 3:14authority. But among the Lord's people,
- 3:18women are not independent of men, and men are not independent
- 3:22of women. For although the first woman
- 3:24came from man, every other man was born from a woman, and
- 3:29everything comes from God. Judge for yourselves.
- 3:34Is it right for a woman to pray to God in public without
- 3:37covering a head? Isn't it obvious that it's
- 3:40disgraceful for a man to have long hair?
- 3:43And isn't long hair a woman's pride and joy, for it has been
- 3:48given to her as a covering? But if anyone wants to argue
- 3:51about this, I simply say that we have no other custom than this,
- 3:56and neither do God's other churches.
- 4:00But in the following instruction I cannot praise you, for it
- 4:04sounds as if more harm than good is done when you meet together.
- 4:08First, I hear that there are divisions among you when you
- 4:11meet as a church, and to some extent I believe it.
- 4:15But of course there must be divisions among you so that you
- 4:19who have God's approval will be recognised when you meet
- 4:23together. You are not really interested in
- 4:26the Lord's Supper, for some of you hurry to eat your own meal
- 4:30without sharing with others. As a result, some go hungry
- 4:35while others get drunk. What?
- 4:38Don't you have your own homes for eating and drinking?
- 4:41Or do you really want to disgrace God's church and shame
- 4:45the poor? What am I supposed to say?
- 4:48Do you want me to praise you? Well, I certainly will not
- 4:52praise you for this, for I pass on to you what I received from
- 4:57the Lord Himself. On the night when he was
- 5:00betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to
- 5:04God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and
- 5:07said, This is my body which is given for you.
- 5:12Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup
- 5:17of wine after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant
- 5:21between God and his people, an agreement confirmed with my
- 5:26blood. Do this in remembrance of Me as
- 5:29often as you drink it. For every time you eat this
- 5:33bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord's death
- 5:38until he comes again. So anyone who eats bread or
- 5:43drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning
- 5:47against the body and blood of the Lord.
- 5:50That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread
- 5:54and drinking the cup. For if you eat the bread or
- 5:57drink the cup without honouring the body of Christ, you are
- 6:00eating and drinking God's judgement upon yourself.
- 6:04That is why many of you are weak and sick, and some have even
- 6:08died. But if we would examine
- 6:11ourselves, we would not be judged by God in this way.
- 6:15Yet when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined
- 6:19so that we will not be condemned along with the world.
- 6:23So, my dear brothers and sisters, when you gather for the
- 6:26Lord's Supper, wait for each other.
- 6:30If you are really hungry, eat at home so you won't bring
- 6:34judgement upon yourselves when you meet together.
- 6:37I'll give you instructions about the other matters after I
- 6:40arrive. Our Jesus, we hear from this
- 6:53reading that you are indeed a God of order.
- 7:00You don't rule in chaos and confusion, but you know the best
- 7:06way for us to live, the best way for our communities to live
- 7:10together, and the best way for us to live subservient to you.
- 7:17So Jesus, we lift you up and we pray that you would structure
- 7:23our heart so that you indeed take that highest throne and
- 7:30that everything else falls into its rightful place.
- 7:34And Lord, as we live together, I pray that we would always,
- 7:39always have your heart for each other that doesn't look to our
- 7:43own selfish needs or desires, but continually thinks about
- 7:48your body and our brothers and sisters and how we can build
- 7:52each other up in our lives. Following you, worshipping you,
- 7:57and sharing your love with our communities.
- 8:01We just love you and we are so grateful for all that you've
- 8:05done for us. And so we pray all of this in
- 8:09your loving name, Jesus, Amen.
