- 0:00Speaker 1: Now more. Mark Simos on seventeen r.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Well Roger Friedman, the great entertainment reporters should check out
- 0:11Speaker 2: his website showbiz for one one dot com, great stories.
- 0:14Speaker 2: There's new stuff every day Showbiz for one one dot com.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Roger Friedman, How you doing?
- 0:21Speaker 3: I'm doing great. I saw a great Broadway show this week.
- 0:24Speaker 3: You know that everyone should see. It's called Becky Shaw.
- 0:27Speaker 3: It's a comedy playing at the Helen Hayes Theater and
- 0:30Speaker 3: I really you would love it's everyone loves it.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Every reviewer loved it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: There wasn't a single one that didn't like it. And
- 0:38Speaker 3: it's it's just absolutely hilarious.
- 0:39Speaker 2: And you can picture me sitting through an entire Broadway show.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Yeah, you would like this show. It's fun, It's really fun.
- 0:47Speaker 3: And the star of it is this guy, Alden Ehrenreich
- 0:50Speaker 3: who played Hans Solo, you know, in that Hans.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Solo movie that came out a few years ago.
- 0:55Speaker 3: And he's a really good actor, but he's never really
- 0:57Speaker 3: had a hit movie and now he's got to hit
- 1:00Speaker 3: Broadway play. He'll be nominated for a Tony Award and
- 1:05Speaker 3: and everyone Linda Emon, who is a very well known
- 1:08Speaker 3: Broadway actress kind of steals the show, and she's also hilarious.
- 1:13Speaker 3: So it's about a family, and it's also, strangely enough,
- 1:17Speaker 3: it's about a family, it's.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Also about dating.
- 1:19Speaker 3: And it's just it's so many laughs that you really need.
- 1:24Speaker 3: You need the laugh, believe me.
- 1:26Speaker 2: So's to tell us the name again, Becky Shaw sounds good.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Hey tell this girl.
- 1:32Speaker 3: This actress who you don't really know, plays this Becky Shaw,
- 1:35Speaker 3: who doesn't really come into the play for a little while,
- 1:38Speaker 3: and you think that she's meek and mild.
- 1:40Speaker 1: By the time the play is over, you're terrified of her.
- 1:44Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:44Speaker 1: It's one of those things.
- 1:46Speaker 2: So, how's Broadway doing overall? How's business on Broadway?
- 1:50Speaker 3: Business was really good? Last week Broadway was up about
- 1:53Speaker 3: five million dollars from the week before. It's a little
- 1:56Speaker 3: behind from last year, but it's a big, big increases.
- 2:02Speaker 3: The shows that they're really carrying it are Harry Potter
- 2:06Speaker 3: and The Curse Child has become such a hit because
- 2:08Speaker 3: they brought this guy Tom Felton in from the Harry
- 2:11Speaker 3: Potter movies and now the Harry Potter fans are like
- 2:15Speaker 3: selling out the theater every.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Week to see him.
- 2:18Speaker 3: So he just signed another contract to go through November,
- 2:20Speaker 3: because where's it going to go. They're doing just doing great,
- 2:24Speaker 3: and Hamilton is huge, of course, and then we have
- 2:28Speaker 3: some new shows opening right now for the Tony Awards,
- 2:31Speaker 3: and we'll see how they're gonna do.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Yeah, hey, tell us about this Michael Jackson movie. I mean,
- 2:36Speaker 2: you're like a Michael Jackson.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I am the Michael Jackson expert. Well, it'll be interesting
- 2:45Speaker 3: some people.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Doesn't sound like a rave review.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Yeah, we're not allowed to review it yet. It's only
- 2:52Speaker 3: just be shown for the first time. I'll tell you
- 2:54Speaker 3: what's great at What's I think is going to be
- 2:56Speaker 3: great about it is that Michael's nephew, Jermaine Jackson's son,
- 3:00Speaker 3: Jeffar Jackson, plays him in the movie, and he looks
- 3:04Speaker 3: a lot like him, and he can dance.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Like him and sing like him.
- 3:08Speaker 3: So the concert part of this movie is going to
- 3:11Speaker 3: be fantastic. I don't know what the story is going
- 3:14Speaker 3: to be like, but the story I do know this
- 3:17Speaker 3: much about the story. This is only about the nineteen eighties.
- 3:20Speaker 3: It ends when Bad, the album Bad comes out and.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Michael's way on top.
- 3:25Speaker 3: They don't get into anything after nineteen ninety, so there's none.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Of the they were originally going.
- 3:30Speaker 3: They originally filmed part of it to show Michael being
- 3:36Speaker 3: accused of child molestation and then being exonerated, and it
- 3:40Speaker 3: just didn't work in the movie, so they cut that
- 3:42Speaker 3: whole part out and they've just made it about his
- 3:45Speaker 3: great success and all the great music from the eighties,
- 3:48Speaker 3: which I think is smart because you know, the MJ
- 3:51Speaker 3: musical on Broadway also does the same thing. It just addresses,
- 3:56Speaker 3: you know, the high point of Michael's career, and they
- 3:59Speaker 3: don't get into any of the details of all the
- 4:02Speaker 3: crazy stuff that happened. I do you know, Bubble I
- 4:06Speaker 3: agree with that.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Isn't that a better idea? Yeah?
- 4:10Speaker 3: I do know that Bubbles the chimp is in is
- 4:12Speaker 3: in the movie, so.
- 4:14Speaker 1: That's very exciting.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Not everyone loves Bubbles, the real Bubbles Now the real
- 4:18Speaker 3: one is retired. He lives in Florida and apparently apparently
- 4:22Speaker 3: he's having a great time.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I'm not kidding.
- 4:25Speaker 3: People got to visit him, and he's great and he
- 4:27Speaker 3: doesn't remember anything that happened. But uh no, I think
- 4:32Speaker 3: I think the movie will be fun. If you like
- 4:34Speaker 3: Michael Jackson. It'll be like a great concert film.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Sounds good.
- 4:39Speaker 1: We'll know more in a couple of weeks. We'll we'll,
- 4:41Speaker 1: we'll know more.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Paul McCartney tell us what he's up to.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Huge stuff going on. He's going to be the musical
- 4:49Speaker 3: guest on Saying I Live. I think it's May May fourteenth,
- 4:54Speaker 3: and it's the final.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Episode of the season, and he's promoting.
- 4:58Speaker 3: His new album called Boys of Dungeon Lane, which will
- 5:01Speaker 3: be out May twenty ninth. He has a single out
- 5:04Speaker 3: right now. The single is terrific. Paulccartney. These guys, the
- 5:09Speaker 3: guys who are last, the Rolling Stones, are announcing on
- 5:13Speaker 3: Saturday a new album and a new single.
- 5:16Speaker 1: They're dropping a single on Saturday the eleventh.
- 5:19Speaker 2: And who's going to play this new single?
- 5:24Speaker 3: Well, you know, the last album was fantastic and it
- 5:28Speaker 3: did very well and it won the Grammy Award. So
- 5:31Speaker 3: and there's nothing better than for me, there's nothing better
- 5:35Speaker 3: than the Rolling Stones. So I'm I'm thrilled. But you
- 5:38Speaker 3: have Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones. Paul McCartney. Ringo Starr
- 5:43Speaker 3: also has a terrific album coming out. I think it's
- 5:45Speaker 3: this week. And he had a very good country album
- 5:49Speaker 3: last year. So these guys are in there. Well, Bruce's
- 5:53Speaker 3: into this AVO.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Now the handicap seats are on the stage.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I did, wheelchair access is on the stage.
- 6:04Speaker 3: But you know, and listen Gladys Knight and all those
- 6:08Speaker 3: that gang, Patty Lapel, LaBelle, they're all out there touring
- 6:12Speaker 3: and these people are serious about it. They're not like
- 6:15Speaker 3: the new people, the or the generation after them.
- 6:19Speaker 1: There.
- 6:19Speaker 3: You know Sting is coming to the Metropolitan opase. I mean,
- 6:24Speaker 3: these people want to work. Everybody wants to work, they
- 6:26Speaker 3: want to sing, They still writing music.
- 6:28Speaker 1: It's very exciting. I think, let them do it.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Paul Simon's on tour, he's doing none of the big tour.
- 6:35Speaker 3: So all of these classic guys are out there doing
- 6:37Speaker 3: their thing.
- 6:38Speaker 1: You know, it's cool, No, it.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Is, it is. Hey, these are all the old time artists.
- 6:42Speaker 2: They always knew how. They had better work ethics, more
- 6:44Speaker 2: disciplined than the newer people.
- 6:46Speaker 1: And a real work ethic.
- 6:48Speaker 3: They also they were real composers, you know, they weren't
- 6:51Speaker 3: like these people now have teams of writers writing for them.
- 6:55Speaker 3: These guys who were out there wrote their own songs.
- 6:58Speaker 3: They recorded there, they orchestrated them, they you know, recorded them.
- 7:02Speaker 3: They were the real thing, so they don't want to
- 7:04Speaker 3: give up. I'm very excited about the Rolling Stone. I'll
- 7:07Speaker 3: be right there on Saturday watching that announcement.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Yeah, people don't realize how these guys were trained. If
- 7:11Speaker 2: you were the Beatles the Cavern Club, you did like
- 7:13Speaker 2: eight shows a day, and if you went to Hamburg, Germany,
- 7:16Speaker 2: you perform noon to midnight. You have twelve hours a day.
- 7:19Speaker 1: So oh yeah, yeah, yeah right, and the Stones listen.
- 7:23Speaker 3: I mean, Keith Richards has a little arthritis and he
- 7:26Speaker 3: said he didn't want a tour. I could do a
- 7:27Speaker 3: big tour. But I think they're going to announce before
- 7:29Speaker 3: the end of the summer. They're going to do one
- 7:31Speaker 3: of these things like Harry Styles is coming to Business
- 7:33Speaker 3: Square Garden and he's just staying there for thirty shows
- 7:36Speaker 3: instead of going to tons of cities, and they're making
- 7:39Speaker 3: the people come to them. So I think the Stones
- 7:43Speaker 3: will do something like that where they do like New York,
- 7:45Speaker 3: Los Angeles, London, and you'll they'll do like thirty shows
- 7:49Speaker 3: in each place and you'll just go see it.
- 7:51Speaker 2: You know.
- 7:51Speaker 3: That's that's because Keith. We can't move Keith around too much.
- 7:55Speaker 3: He can play the guitar like crazy, But you know
- 7:58Speaker 3: everyone's got to sit at.
- 7:59Speaker 2: The well, hey, will you in a minute? Left, Roger Freeman,
- 8:03Speaker 2: tell me about the oscars. Now, what happens with the oscars?
- 8:05Speaker 2: Next it moves to YouTube or something.
- 8:07Speaker 3: That's well, no, the next two years, it's still that
- 8:11Speaker 3: on YouTube the next two years of the ninety ninth
- 8:14Speaker 3: anniversary and the hundredth anniversary, and they're staying on ABC.
- 8:18Speaker 3: And they're going to be in March again, which is
- 8:20Speaker 3: sort of crazy because it's too late. They should have
- 8:23Speaker 3: had them in February this year and it's just way
- 8:26Speaker 3: too late. By that time, no one cares that they're
- 8:28Speaker 3: sticking with it. I think ABC is forcing them to
- 8:30Speaker 3: do it in March. Then in twenty twenty nine, when
- 8:34Speaker 3: you and I will be in the nursing home, they
- 8:37Speaker 3: will have it.
- 8:39Speaker 1: On YouTube, and who knows what that'll be like. I
- 8:42Speaker 1: have no idea what that'll be like. I would YouTube
- 8:47Speaker 1: doesn't care.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I love YouTube, That's so what I watch most of
- 8:49Speaker 2: the time. But if you're down, and do you yeah,
- 8:52Speaker 2: if you're in Boco Tan with the eighty year old's
- 8:54Speaker 2: going to well, how do I find this? Where is it?
- 8:56Speaker 2: How do I see it?
- 8:57Speaker 1: No?
- 8:57Speaker 3: One will ever find no no one will ever find it.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I have trouble now finding the Yankees on you know,
- 9:03Speaker 3: Apple or Amazon, so listen, it's tough.
- 9:07Speaker 1: That's a whole other story about the Yankees.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Well, but anyway, the Oscars, you know, the Oscars will.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Go on and on. This year. By the way, we're
- 9:16Speaker 1: gonna have a.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Lot of big hit movies, like big deal movies.
- 9:21Speaker 1: So the Oscars should.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Be interesting because we've got Steven Spielberg movie coming in June.
- 9:25Speaker 3: We have Christopher Nolan movie coming in July. We've got
- 9:28Speaker 3: all these big, big event movies. So they'll all be
- 9:32Speaker 3: part of the Oscars next year.
- 9:34Speaker 2: All right, that's good to hear. Great stuff, Roger Freeman.
- 9:36Speaker 2: You want to see more, go to his website showbiz
