Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
• 0:06
rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, June 22nd.
• 0:11
Courage that speaks. Have you ever been hurt by
• 0:15
someone and felt the immediate pull to fire back?
• 0:19
Maybe someone spread something about you, said something that
• 0:22
wasn't fair, or treated you in a way that you didn't deserve, and
• 0:26
everything inside you wanted to react, to defend yourself, to
• 0:30
retaliate, to make sure they knew how wrong they were.
• 0:34
It takes a very particular kind of strength to choose not to.
• 0:38
Proverbs chapter 18 verse 13 says if one gives an answer
• 0:42
before he hears, it is his folly and shame.
• 0:46
Speaking before you fully understand a situation is one of
• 0:49
the most common ways we damage our relationships and our own
• 0:53
reputation. And verse 14 adds, the spirit of
• 0:57
a man can sustain his infirmity, but a wounded spirit?
• 1:00
Who can bear? There's something about a
• 1:02
wounded spirit, a heart that's been genuinely hurt, that is
• 1:06
harder to carry than almost anything physical.
• 1:09
And the way we respond when we're wounded reveals a lot
• 1:12
about the depth of our faith. In First Samuel chapter 24,
• 1:17
David had the most remarkable opportunity for revenge
• 1:21
imaginable. Saul had been hunting him for
• 1:23
years, and in A twist of circumstances, Saul walked into
• 1:27
a cave where David and his men were hiding, completely unaware.
• 1:31
David's men saw it as a sign from God.
• 1:34
This is your moment. Take him out.
• 1:38
The threat is right in front of you.
• 1:40
End it now. But David didn't.
• 1:44
He couldn't even bring himself to take Saul's robe without
• 1:46
guilt. And when he confronted Saul
• 1:49
afterward, First Samuel chapter 24, verse 12 records David's
• 1:53
courageous, restrained response. Why do you listen to the words
• 1:57
of men who say David seeks your harm?
• 2:00
He confronted the lie not with a sword, but with truth spoken
• 2:03
respectfully. He trusted God's justice over
• 2:07
his own retaliation. That is a level of emotional and
• 2:11
spiritual maturity that doesn't come naturally.
• 2:14
It requires a heart anchored to something deeper than the
• 2:17
immediate emotion. And that anchor was prayer.
• 2:21
Psalm 57, verse one is one of the most beautiful expressions
• 2:25
of trust in the middle of trouble.
• 2:27
Be merciful to me, oh God, be merciful to me.
• 2:30
For in you my soul takes refuge. In the shadow of your wings.
• 2:34
I will take refuge until trouble passes by.
• 2:38
David wrote this while hiding from Saul.
• 2:40
He didn't know when the season of being haunted would end, but
• 2:44
he had found a place of shelter. Not a physical one, but a
• 2:47
spiritual one under God's wings. And Psalm 142, verse one takes
• 2:54
it even further in its raw honesty.
• 2:56
I cry aloud to the Lord. I plead aloud to the Lord for
• 2:59
  mercy. Not a polished, organized
• 3:02
prayer. Just an honest, desperate cry.
• 3:05
And that's enough. God meets us there.
• 3:09
What this means for our lives today is profound.
• 3:12
When someone hurts you, when something feels deeply unfair,
• 3:16
when your spirit is wounded, you have a choice about where that
• 3:19
pain goes. It can go outward in reaction
• 3:22
and retaliation, or it can go upward in prayer and trust.
• 3:26
One destroys relationships. The other preserves your heart
• 3:30
and honors God. Courage that speaks isn't always
• 3:34
  loud. Sometimes the most courageous
• 3:36
thing you can do is walk away before you say something you
• 3:40
can't take back. Sometimes it's choosing to bring
• 3:43
your hurt to God before you bring it to the person who
• 3:46
caused it. Sometimes it's confronting a lie
• 3:49
calmly, like David did, rather than matching the intensity of
• 3:53
the other person's anger. That's not passivity.
• 3:57
That's power, the kind that comes from a heart anchored in
• 4:00
God's justice and covered by His mercy.
• 4:04
Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for
• 4:08
being our refuge. When we feel hurt,
• 4:10
misunderstood, or wronged. Help us to pause before we
• 4:13
speak, to listen before we react, and to bring our wounds
• 4:17
to You. Before we take matters into our
• 4:19
own hands. Give us the courage to respond
• 4:21
like David, with truth, with patience, and with trust that
• 4:25
you are the ultimate judge. Shelter us under your wings
• 4:29
until trouble passes. In Jesus name, Amen.

• 5:33
Proverbs chapter 18 verses 13 to 14 World English Bible He who
• 5:38
answers before he hears that is folly and shame to him.
• 5:42
A man's spirit will sustain him in sickness, but a crushed
• 5:45
spirit who can bear. First Samuel Chapter 24 World
• 5:50
English Bible When Saul had returned from following the
• 5:54
Philistines, he was told, Behold, David is in the
• 5:57
wilderness of Njetty. Then Saul took 3000 chosen men
• 6:02
out of all Israel, and when to seek David and his men on the
• 6:06
rocks of the wild goats, he came to the sheep pens by the way,
• 6:10
where there was a cave, And Saul went in to relieve himself.
• 6:14
Now David and his men were staying in the innermost parts
• 6:17
of The Cave. David's men said to him, Behold,
• 6:21
the day of which Yahweh said to you, Behold, I will deliver your
• 6:24
enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him, as it shall
• 6:27
seem good to you. Then David arose and cut off the
• 6:32
skirt of Saul's robe. Secretly afterward, David's
• 6:35
heart struck him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.
• 6:39
He said to his men, Yahweh forbid that I should do this
• 6:42
thing to my Lord Yahweh's anointed, to stretch out my hand
• 6:46
against him, since he is Yahweh's anointed.
• 6:49
So David checked his men with these words and didn't allow
• 6:52
them to rise against Saul. Saul rose up out of The Cave and
• 6:57
went on his way. David also arose afterward and
• 7:01
went out of The Cave and cried after Saul, saying, My Lord the
• 7:04
king, when Saul looked behind him.
• 7:07
David bowed. With his face to the earth and
• 7:09
showed respect, David said to Saul, Why do you listen to men's
• 7:13
words saying, Behold, David seeks to harm you.
• 7:17
Behold, today your eyes have seen how Yahweh had delivered
• 7:20
you today into my hand in The Cave.
• 7:23
Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you, and I said I will
• 7:27
not stretch out my hand against my Lord, for He is Yahweh's
• 7:30
  anointed. Moreover, my Father, behold,
• 7:34
yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand, for in that I cut
• 7:38
off the skirt of your robe and didn't kill you.
• 7:41
No one see that there is neither evil nor disobedience in My
• 7:44
hand, and I have not sinned against You, though you hunt for
• 7:47
My life to take it. May Yahweh judge between me and
• 7:51
You, and may Yahweh avenge me of you, but My hand will not be on
• 7:55
You, as the proverb of the ancients says.
• 7:58
Out of the wicked comes wickedness, but My hand will not
• 8:01
be on you. Against whom has the King of
• 8:04
Israel come out? Whom do you pursue?
• 8:06
  A dead dog? A flea?
• 8:08
May Yahweh therefore be judge and give sentence between me and
• 8:12
You, and see and plead My cause, and deliver me out of Your hand.
• 8:16
It came to pass when David had finished speaking these words to
• 8:20
Saul, that Saul said. Is that your voice, my son
• 8:23
David? Saul lifted up his voice and
• 8:25
wept. He said to David, You are more
• 8:29
righteous than I, for you have done good to me, whereas I have
• 8:32
done evil to you. You have declared today how you
• 8:35
have dealt well with me, because when Yahweh had delivered me up
• 8:38
into your hand, you didn't kill me.
• 8:41
For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away
• 8:44
unharmed? Therefore may Yahweh reward you
• 8:47
good for that which you have done to me today.
• 8:50
Now behold, I know that you will surely be king, and that the
• 8:54
Kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand.
• 8:57
Swear now, therefore, to me by Yahweh, that you will not cut
• 9:00
off my offspring after me, and that you will not destroy my
• 9:04
name out of My father's house. David swore to Saul.
• 9:08
Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the
• 9:11
stronghold. Psalm Chapter 57 World English
• 9:15
Bible Be merciful to me, God, be merciful to me, for my soul
• 9:19
takes refuge in you. Yes, in the shadow of your
• 9:23
wings. I will take refuge until
• 9:25
disaster has passed. I cry out to God Most High, to
• 9:29
God who accomplishes my requests for me.
• 9:32
He will send from heaven and save me.
• 9:34
He rebukes the one who is pursuing me.
• 9:37
God will send out His loving kindness and His truth.
• 9:40
My soul is among lions, I lie among those who are set on fire,
• 9:45
even the sons of men whose teeth are Spears and arrows and their
• 9:49
tongue a sharp sword. Be exalted, God, above the
• 9:52
heavens. Let your glory be above all the
• 9:55
earth. They have prepared a net for my
• 9:57
steps. My soul is bowed down.
• 10:00
They dig a pit before me. They fall into the middle of it
• 10:02
themselves. My heart is steadfast, God, my
• 10:07
heart is steadfast. I will sing.
• 10:09
Yes, I will sing praises. Wake up my glory.
• 10:12
Wake up lewd and harp. I will wake up the dawn.
• 10:15
I will give thanks to you, Lord among the peoples.
• 10:18
I will sing praises to you among the nations, for your great
• 10:22
loving kindness reaches to the heavens and your truth to the
• 10:25
skies. Be exalted God above the
• 10:27
heavens. Let your glory be over all the
• 10:30
earth. Psalm Chapter 142 World English
• 10:34
Bible I cry with my voice to Yahweh.
• 10:37
With my voice I ask Yahweh for mercy.
• 10:40
I pour out my complaint before Him.
• 10:43
I tell Him my troubles. When my spirit was overwhelmed
• 10:46
within me, You knew my route. On the path in which I walk,
• 10:49
they have hidden a snare for me. Look on my right and see, for
• 10:53
there is no one who is concerned for me.
• 10:56
Refuge has fled from me. No one cares for my soul.
• 10:59
I cried to you, Yahweh, I said. You are my refuge, my portion in
• 11:04
the land of the living. Listen to my cry, for I am in
• 11:07
desperate need. Deliver me from my persecutors,
• 11:10
for they are too strong for me. Bring my soul out of prison that
• 11:14
I may give thanks to your name. The righteous will surround me,
• 11:18
for you will be good to me. Thanks for joining us on Bible
