  Courage that speaks. Have you ever been hurt by
• 0:15
  someone and felt the immediate pull to fire back?
• 0:19
  Maybe someone spread something about you, said something that
• 0:22
  wasn't fair, or treated you in a way that you didn't deserve, and
• 0:26
  everything inside you wanted to react, to defend yourself, to
• 0:30
  retaliate, to make sure they knew how wrong they were.
• 0:34
  It takes a very particular kind of strength to choose not to.
• 0:38
  Proverbs chapter 18 verse 13 says if one gives an answer
• 0:42
  before he hears, it is his folly and shame.
• 0:46
  Speaking before you fully understand a situation is one of
• 0:49
  the most common ways we damage our relationships and our own
• 0:53
  reputation. And verse 14 adds, the spirit of
• 0:57
  a man can sustain his infirmity, but a wounded spirit?
• 1:00
  Who can bear? There's something about a
• 1:02
  wounded spirit, a heart that's been genuinely hurt, that is
• 1:06
  harder to carry than almost anything physical.
• 1:09
  And the way we respond when we're wounded reveals a lot
• 1:12
  about the depth of our faith. In First Samuel chapter 24,
• 1:17
  David had the most remarkable opportunity for revenge
• 1:21
  imaginable. Saul had been hunting him for
• 1:23
  years, and in A twist of circumstances, Saul walked into
• 1:27
  a cave where David and his men were hiding, completely unaware.
• 1:31
  David's men saw it as a sign from God.
• 1:34
  This is your moment. Take him out.
• 1:38
  The threat is right in front of you.
• 1:40
  End it now. But David didn't.
• 1:44
  He couldn't even bring himself to take Saul's robe without
• 1:46
  guilt. And when he confronted Saul
• 1:49
  afterward, First Samuel chapter 24, verse 12 records David's
• 1:53
  courageous, restrained response. Why do you listen to the words
• 1:57
  of men who say David seeks your harm?
• 2:00
  He confronted the lie not with a sword, but with truth spoken
• 2:03
  respectfully. He trusted God's justice over
• 2:07
  his own retaliation. That is a level of emotional and
• 2:11
  spiritual maturity that doesn't come naturally.
• 2:14
  It requires a heart anchored to something deeper than the
• 2:17
  immediate emotion. And that anchor was prayer.
• 2:21
  Psalm 57, verse one is one of the most beautiful expressions
• 2:25
  of trust in the middle of trouble.
• 2:27
  Be merciful to me, oh God, be merciful to me.
• 2:30
  For in you my soul takes refuge. In the shadow of your wings.
• 2:34
  I will take refuge until trouble passes by.
• 2:38
  David wrote this while hiding from Saul.
• 2:40
  He didn't know when the season of being haunted would end, but
• 2:44
  he had found a place of shelter. Not a physical one, but a
• 2:47
  spiritual one under God's wings. And Psalm 142, verse one takes
• 2:54
  it even further in its raw honesty.
• 2:56
  I cry aloud to the Lord. I plead aloud to the Lord for
• 2:59
  mercy. Not a polished, organized
• 3:02
  prayer. Just an honest, desperate cry.
• 3:05
  And that's enough. God meets us there.
• 3:09
  What this means for our lives today is profound.
• 3:12
  When someone hurts you, when something feels deeply unfair,
• 3:16
  when your spirit is wounded, you have a choice about where that
• 3:19
  pain goes. It can go outward in reaction
• 3:22
  and retaliation, or it can go upward in prayer and trust.
• 3:26
  One destroys relationships. The other preserves your heart
• 3:30
  and honors God. Courage that speaks isn't always
• 3:34
  loud. Sometimes the most courageous
• 3:36
  thing you can do is walk away before you say something you
• 3:40
  can't take back. Sometimes it's choosing to bring
• 3:43
  your hurt to God before you bring it to the person who
• 3:46
  caused it. Sometimes it's confronting a lie
• 3:49
  calmly, like David did, rather than matching the intensity of
• 3:53
  the other person's anger. That's not passivity.
• 3:57
  That's power, the kind that comes from a heart anchored in
• 4:00
  God's justice and covered by His mercy.
• 4:04
  Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for
• 4:08
  being our refuge. When we feel hurt,
• 4:10
  misunderstood, or wronged. Help us to pause before we
• 4:13
  speak, to listen before we react, and to bring our wounds
• 4:17
  to You. Before we take matters into our
• 4:19
  own hands. Give us the courage to respond
• 4:21
  like David, with truth, with patience, and with trust that
• 4:25
  you are the ultimate judge. Shelter us under your wings
• 4:29
  until trouble passes. In Jesus name, Amen.

  So David checked his men with these words and didn't allow

  Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you, and I said I will

  not stretch out my hand against my Lord, for He is Yahweh's

  off the skirt of your robe and didn't kill you.

  have dealt well with me, because when Yahweh had delivered me up

  into your hand, you didn't kill me.

  For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away

  good for that which you have done to me today.

  Now behold, I know that you will surely be king, and that the
