Because today's topic is exactly that: expressing likes and dislikes in Cantonese. Luna: Oh that's so good. I love talking about my preferences. Lucas: So the key word for 'like' is 鍾意. Let's say it together: 鍾意. Luna: 鍾意. Lucas: Good. And for 'dislike', you add 唔 in front: 唔鍾意. Luna: 唔鍾意. So 唔 means 'not'? Lucas: Exactly. So 鍾意 is like, 唔鍾意 is dislike. Let's practice with 'I like' and 'I don't like'. 'I like' is 我鍾意. Luna: 我鍾意. Lucas: And 'I don't like' is 我唔鍾意. Luna: 我唔鍾意. That's pretty straightforward. Lucas: Yeah. Now let's use them with something you already know. Remember the fruit from episode 25? 蘋果 is apple. Luna: Right, 蘋果. Lucas: So 'I like apples' would be 我鍾意蘋果. Luna: 我鍾意蘋果. Lucas: And 'I don't like apples' is 我唔鍾意蘋果. Luna: 我唔鍾意蘋果. Okay, I got that. Can we try with drinks? Like 咖啡? Lucas: Sure. 我鍾意咖啡. Luna: 我鍾意咖啡. I do like coffee, by the way. Lucas: Good to know. Now, to ask someone if they like something, you say 你鍾唔鍾意? That means 'Do you like?' Luna: 你鍾唔鍾意? So you repeat the word 鍾意 but put 唔 in the middle? Lucas: Exactly. That's a common pattern in Cantonese for yes-no questions. So 你鍾唔鍾意咖啡? Luna: 你鍾唔鍾意咖啡? Hmm, I would answer 我鍾意咖啡. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's try with a verb. Remember 食 from episode 20? 'To eat'. Luna: 食. So 'I like to eat' would be 我鍾意食? Lucas: Yes! 我鍾意食. And if you like to eat apples: 我鍾意食蘋果. Luna: 我鍾意食蘋果. That's 'I like to eat apples'. Lucas: Right. And 'I don't like to eat' is 我唔鍾意食. Luna: 我唔鍾意食. What about asking 'Do you like to eat?' Lucas: 你鍾唔鍾意食? Luna: 你鍾唔鍾意食? Okay, let me try a full sentence: 你鍾唔鍾意食蘋果? Lucas: Excellent! That's exactly right. Lucas: That's a great answer. Now let's review all the phrases we learned today. Luna: Sure. We have 鍾意 and 唔鍾意. Lucas: 我鍾意 and 我唔鍾意. Luna: 你鍾唔鍾意? And 我鍾意食. Lucas: Perfect.
