- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37He's called our comforter. He does not expect us to do life
- 0:41in our own strength. And I want to know that deeper
- 0:44myself personally, because there's days that I get
- 0:48frustrated too and burn on and overwhelmed and discouraged or
- 0:53whatever. And and I don't want to stay in
- 0:55those places. I want to immediately connect
- 0:57with the fact that I need the help of the Spirit of God.
- 1:00And when we ask for the help of the Holy Spirit, He will
- 1:04definitely come through for us. Amen.
- 1:06The Holy Spirit is like a sturdy railing, keeping you balanced
- 1:10when life's weight feels too heavy.
- 1:13In today's message, Pastor Clark portrays how God is your
- 1:16comforter. Not expecting you to face life
- 1:19alone might hit days of frustration, burnout, or
- 1:22discouragement. Feeling overwhelmed?
- 1:25Instead of lingering there, you can turn to the Spirit for help.
- 1:29He's ready to come through when you call, bringing strength and
- 1:32peace. God knows your struggles and
- 1:35offers his Spirit to carry you forward.
- 1:38Now here's Pastor Clark in the book of Acts chapter one with
- 1:42today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:45Father God, we thank you Lord, for the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 1:50It is the only hope that the world has.
- 1:52And Lord, you told us clearly that you are the way the truth
- 1:57of life, and no man comes of the Father.
- 1:58But through you, everywhere we live, we have an opportunity to
- 2:03share our relationship with you, Lord, with other people.
- 2:07I pray, Lord, that you would work in our hearts as a church
- 2:10family, as a body, where we work, where we live,
- 2:14friendships, Father, neighbors, that you would open up doors of
- 2:17opportunity for each of us on a daily basis to be able to share
- 2:21the gospel with people. Lord, because we know that you
- 2:25love people and you want us to love people and and father,
- 2:28we're around people every day that are on their way to a
- 2:30crisis eternity if they don't know Jesus Christ as their Lord
- 2:34and Savior. We don't grasp that many times
- 2:36we get up and we live our lives and we see countless hundreds of
- 2:40people every day and we don't perhaps at times sink.
- 2:44I wonder where they're going to spend eternity.
- 2:47And Lord, you tell us in your word that the only way we can
- 2:50spend eternity with You is to have you as our Lord and Savior,
- 2:54to have our sins forgiven, and to have you come into our life
- 2:58and change us to become like you.
- 3:00And so, Father, we just ask that we would be used by you.
- 3:03We know this is Your will. We know the book of the Acts was
- 3:06written by you, penned by you through Luke the Evangelist to
- 3:10help us see the beginning of the church and how it thrived and
- 3:14how it grew and how it increased Lord.
- 3:17And so Lord, we hold one another up and pray for one another.
- 3:21We ask Lord God today by your spirit's power, by your Holy
- 3:25Spirit's power, that you would truly minister to us through the
- 3:30word of God today and that the book of the Acts would it is a
- 3:33living book. It's, it's the Acts of the Holy
- 3:35Spirit through the hands of the apostles.
- 3:38And so God teach us to trust you and to know you and to walk
- 3:43deeper with you. And, and God, we, we do all
- 3:45these things for your glory and for your honor, and we pray
- 3:49these things in Jesus name, Amen.
- 3:52God bless you guys. We are in the book of the Acts.
- 3:55We're starting the series and Acts.
- 3:56We finished the Gospel of Matthew.
- 3:59And so I felt that it would just make sense to to see what
- 4:02happened to the church immediately after, you know,
- 4:05Jesus was getting ready to ascend into heaven to be with
- 4:08his father. Before, though, I go to the book
- 4:11of the Acts. I wanted to talk about the Holy
- 4:13Spirit a little bit. I've taught this book several
- 4:16times before, the book of the Acts, and I don't know if it's
- 4:19because I'm getting older, things are sinking in more, I
- 4:22don't know. But boy, I'll tell you, these
- 4:24truths in the Bible are just hitting me at different levels
- 4:27than ever, ever before. So I wanted to ask you a
- 4:30question. Have you ever heard this phrase?
- 4:33God helps those who help themselves.
- 4:36Do you believe that's in the Bible?
- 4:39Well, some people do, and we're all conditioned to sort of live
- 4:43in our own strength. I don't know about you, but I'm
- 4:45when I review my life and I think about my life, I'm
- 4:49astounded at times of how much I'm trying to do in my own
- 4:52strength, which is ridiculous. And so the reason I want to tell
- 4:56you a little bit about this personally is that the I need to
- 4:59be reminded about this as much as you do.
- 5:02And in the book of John chapter 14, it says the heading verse 15
- 5:08of John 14. And Jesus promises another
- 5:10helper. He says, if you love me, keep my
- 5:13commandments and I will pray the Father and he will give you
- 5:16another helper that he may abide with you forever.
- 5:20The spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it
- 5:23neither sees him nor but you know him, for he dwells with you
- 5:28and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans, I
- 5:32will come to you. And then he says over in the
- 5:37book of John 15, he says, I am the vine, you are the branches.
- 5:43And he that abideth in me, and I in him the same bringeth forth
- 5:46much fruit. Without me you can do nothing.
- 5:51Really think about that. Without Him we can do nothing.
- 5:56And then He also tells us about this importance of this witness
- 6:01that we have the privilege to be able to be part of.
- 6:05He says in the 25th verse of John 14, These things I've
- 6:10spoken to you while being present with you.
- 6:12But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send to my
- 6:15name, He will teach you all things and bring to remembrance
- 6:18all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace
- 6:22I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give
- 6:25to you. Let not your heart be troubled,
- 6:28neither let it be afraid. You have heard me say to you,
- 6:31I'm going away and coming back to you.
- 6:33If you love me, you would rejoice because I said I am
- 6:37going to my Father, for my Father is greater than I.
- 6:41And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come
- 6:45to pass, you may believe I will no longer talk much with you.
- 6:49For the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in me
- 6:53but that the world may know that I love the Father.
- 6:55And as the Father gave me commandments, so I do arise.
- 6:59Let us go from here. And so we have this opportunity
- 7:05to share our faith. That's why God established the
- 7:09Church to help us learn how to communicate to one another and
- 7:15to the world their need of Jesus Christ.
- 7:19And so perhaps you're here today and maybe you have never really
- 7:22felt comfortable sharing your faith with other people.
- 7:25Well, you're not alone, right? We're all beginners at this, and
- 7:28we're learning how to openly find opportunities to share our
- 7:32relationship with Jesus. But what I love about the Word
- 7:36of God, the Comforter, the encourager, the Helper, it says
- 7:39in John 1526 And the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you
- 7:44from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the
- 7:47Father. He will testify of me, and you
- 7:50also will bear witness because you have been with me from the
- 7:52beginning. So the Holy Spirit dwells in the
- 7:55lives of the believer. So we have the supernatural
- 8:00power and authority and ability to speak to people about their
- 8:05need of a Savior, Jesus Christ. It comes from the Spirit of God
- 8:09in us. He is the ultimate witness.
- 8:11He's the one that testifies of the truth.
- 8:14And the Holy Spirit always works to magnify the Lord Jesus.
- 8:19He doesn't draw attention to himself.
- 8:21And so as we study the book of the Acts today and begin to work
- 8:24through this, my prayer for us as a church is that we would
- 8:29find opportunities in daily life to share our faith with other
- 8:32people, that we would pray and ask God to open up doors and
- 8:36opportunity that we might be able to present the Lord to
- 8:39others. And Speaking of crew, we support
- 8:43a missionary with CREW as a church.
- 8:45We have for quite some time. He was a student at Northwestern
- 8:49University studying engineering, had an opportunity to have all
- 8:53kind of countless job opportunities making big bucks.
- 8:56But for some reason, the Lord had dealt with him and worked
- 8:59with him to be part of crew. So he's moved up in the ranks of
- 9:02crew to be a leader, and we get his newsletter.
- 9:05His name's Nick, and he comes here periodically.
- 9:08But I wanted to read some prayer requests.
- 9:10He asked. Pray for all the students who
- 9:12attend the winter conferences in January and February.
- 9:15They do that all over the world, that they would take away
- 9:19practical next steps in walking closely with God and continue to
- 9:23grow closer to Him. Back on campus.
- 9:26Pray that those in the local communities who got to hear
- 9:28about Jesus and who made decisions to follow Jesus during
- 9:32the outreaches at the conference would be connected to their
- 9:35local churches and continually grow in the knowledge and love
- 9:38for God. And he asked for a prayer for
- 9:40himself. Pray for me in this season of
- 9:42discernment as I process my next steps and what I will be doing
- 9:46after my program ends in June. Especially pray that I would be
- 9:50trusting God in the unknown. So that's Nick, so hold him up
- 9:53in your prayers. So let's go to the book of the
- 9:55Acts. It's right after the Gospel of
- 9:59John, and we're going to start working through this book just
- 10:03like we went through Matthew, verse by verse and chapter by
- 10:06chapter. And before I start again, the
- 10:13Holy Spirit, he wants us to know him in a deeper way, in a
- 10:22personal way. God the Father, God the Son, God
- 10:26the Holy Spirit. He's the helper to comforter and
- 10:31He wants to help us. And I pray that we have the
- 10:35humility whenever we're stressed out and we're burnt out and
- 10:38we're overwhelmed and we're tired or whatever, frustrated in
- 10:42life that it would dawn on us that we need God's help.
- 10:46And we just say, Lord, I'm not in a good place right now.
- 10:49I need your help, Holy Spirit. And that's wisdom, isn't it?
- 10:55Because He's called our comforter, He does not expect us
- 10:58to do life in our own strength. And I want to know that deeper
- 11:03myself personally, because there's days that I get
- 11:06frustrated too and burn on and overwhelmed and discourage or
- 11:11whatever. And, and I don't want to stay in
- 11:13those places. I want to immediately connect
- 11:15with the fact that I need the help of the Spirit of God.
- 11:18And when we ask for the help of the Holy Spirit, he will
- 11:22definitely come through for us. Amen.
- 11:25So it starts in the first verse of the 1st chapter of Acts.
- 11:30It says the former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that
- 11:35Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which He
- 11:38was taken up, after He, through the Holy Spirit, had given
- 11:41commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, To whom he
- 11:45also presented himself alive after his suffering, by many
- 11:49infallible proofs, being seen by them during 40 days, and
- 11:52Speaking of the things pertaining to the Kingdom of
- 11:55God. So Luke is the author.
- 11:58He wrote the Gospel of Luke, the Evangelist Luke, and he also is
- 12:02writing the the book of the Acts.
- 12:04At this particular time, he was not an apostle, he was an
- 12:08evangelist. He was a medical doctor, he was
- 12:11a surgeon, and he traveled with the Apostle Paul and his
- 12:14ministry to help him with some of his infirmities and
- 12:17illnesses. Luke was a disciple of the
- 12:20apostle Paul. So we believe that Paul LED Luke
- 12:23to the Lord Jesus. Luke got all the data and the
- 12:27information, interviewed apostles and people who are
- 12:30eyewitnesses of the accounts of the life of Jesus Christ, and he
- 12:35compiled those things in the gospel of Luke.
- 12:37And then he's now compiling all the experiences he had traveling
- 12:42with Paul throughout all the regions.
- 12:44Whenever the book of the Acts is put together, they believe that
- 12:47he finished his sometime before 8060.
- 12:50Because there's no information in here of the crisis that
- 12:53happened in in Rome when the church was sacked and all that
- 12:57kind of stuff, and the persecution began to be poured
- 12:59out upon the church. Luke is a student of history,
- 13:06and everything he wrote was rooted and founded in evidence,
- 13:13not theory. Luke, when he wrote these
- 13:16things, he took his time to be very, very detailed in what it
- 13:21was he was speaking about the subject matter in the book of
- 13:27Acts, the Holy Spirit is mentioned 56 times and prayer is
- 13:31mentioned 39 times, more than any other book of the Bible.
- 13:36Prayer and the person, the Holy Spirit are discussed.
- 13:42And so this is really the foundation of what makes things
- 13:47work in this earth in regard to the things of God, prayer, and
- 13:53the power of God, the Holy Spirit.
- 13:56Theophilus, this person that Luke's referencing here was some
- 14:01type of perhaps Roman dignitary. It appears in the Gospel of Luke
- 14:05that he had an interest in Christianity.
- 14:07And so Luke actually sent the letters to this fellow
- 14:11Theophilus. That's about all we know of him,
- 14:14of everything that Jesus began both to do and teach.
- 14:16So everything that Christ did, and we studied that in a book of
- 14:20Matthew from the beginning of his birth to the eventual
- 14:24crucifixion and ascension, resurrection, are all detailed
- 14:29in the Gospels. And so everything we read in
- 14:33Acts is grounded and founded in the historic aspect of Christ
- 14:38being truly a human being, fully God in human form, human flesh
- 14:44who died on the cross for our sins and rose again from the
- 14:47dead for our sins. And so he's giving again the
- 14:52details and everything now that is culminating in the outpouring
- 14:56of the Holy Spirit of Pentecost is rooted in this evidence that
- 15:00until the day he was taken up after he through the Holy Spirit
- 15:03of giving commandments to the apostles whom he had chosen.
- 15:06Remember the last thing we studied in the book of Matthew,
- 15:09chapter 28. He said go into all the world
- 15:12and preach the gospel, right. Some of you are starting to fall
- 15:15asleep. Preach the Gospel unto every
- 15:18living creature that entitizing them in the name of the Father,
- 15:21Son, and Holy Spirit. And lo, I'm with you always,
- 15:24even and to the end of the age, right?
- 15:27And so that was a commandment not only to the apostles, but to
- 15:30us as the church, as Christians, as believers to spread the
- 15:33gospel. And so it says that whom he also
- 15:38presented himself alive after his sufferings.
- 15:41And we read in First Corinthians 15 that Christ died for our
- 15:45sins. According to the scriptures, He
- 15:46was buried. He rose again on the third day,
- 15:49according to the scriptures, and ascendeth into heaven.
- 15:52He was seen by over 500 witnesses after He rose again
- 15:56from the dead, literally seen by many, many witnesses.
- 16:01So He presented himself alive after his crucifixion by many
- 16:05infallible proofs. He was seen by them during the
- 16:0940 days. He would come in and out of
- 16:11their lives during this time before He ascended to tell them
- 16:15more and more things about what it was he wanted them to
- 16:18accomplish. And he was always speaking about
- 16:20the things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
- 16:24I was reading something this morning about fasting.
- 16:28And fasting sometimes is a good thing to do, especially for
- 16:31media right now, How much more media fee do we need about
- 16:35what's happening in the world? It's very, very overwhelming and
- 16:39at times very, very depressing. And we need to pray for peace.
- 16:43We need to pray for these world rollers to come to their senses
- 16:47and be able to sit down and talk about the issue before more and
- 16:51more people are slaughtered needlessly.
- 16:54It's heartbreaking to see what what's happening to these
- 16:57people. 1.4 million people are out of that country of Ukraine
- 17:01now trying to find a place to work and to live.
- 17:05And where do they find food? We're going to be involved with
- 17:08some other Calgary's across the world financially and helping
- 17:11and if we all help a little bit, that's going to be significant
- 17:14in regard to refuge and relief. We have missionaries on the
- 17:18ground in Ukraine who are actually helping people get out
- 17:21of the country. There's a Calgary Chapel in the
- 17:23farthest western region in Ukraine, which is surrounded by
- 17:26NATO countries that Russia isn't going to mess with over there.
- 17:30That's about as safe as you can be in Ukraine, that particular
- 17:33region. And they are already helping in
- 17:36the church, providing things for the people who are moving out of
- 17:39out of the Ukraine. But this need of understanding
- 17:46where we are in time in regard to the work of the Holy Spirit
- 17:50and what it is he wants to do in the days that we're living.
- 17:54And so I, I look at the time we're reading about in the book
- 17:58of the Acts prior to the persecution and the difficulty
- 18:02of living under a Roman rule as a Christian.
- 18:07It's a difficult time in parts of the world to live as a
- 18:10Christian under various types of dictatorships in the world.
- 18:15And then this is other places other than what we're dealing
- 18:18with right now with Russia. We have issues in Iran and we
- 18:23have issues in China. We have issues in North Africa,
- 18:28we have issues in Venezuela, we have issues in Colombia.
- 18:32There's rulers that don't have a lot of good things planned for
- 18:36the people of those countries. So when you look at Acts, Acts,
- 18:40this isn't a past tense book. It's a living book right now in
- 18:45regard to what it is we're dealing with in our own world
- 18:47today. In verse 4 it says in being
- 18:50assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart
- 18:54from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father.
- 18:57Now remember in John where Jesus was talking to His followers
- 19:00telling them He would send them the comforter, the helper.
- 19:04OK, this is real time now for them.
- 19:06They're told specifically to wait until the Holy Spirit is
- 19:12going to be poured out upon them.
- 19:14Now, they had experiences with the Holy Spirit, as did the Old
- 19:17Testament believers, the Old Testament Saints.
- 19:20But the Holy Spirit before Pentecost came upon people and
- 19:25then he would depart from people.
- 19:27We know David in Psalm 51 when he prayed his prayer repentance
- 19:31after his sin with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah, he prayed
- 19:36in that one section and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
- 19:40Now for a New Testament Christian, that would be a weird
- 19:42prayer because we the Holy Spirit doesn't leave us as
- 19:45Christians. He's in US and he'll never leave
- 19:48us or forsake us. But we can quench the Holy
- 19:51Spirit and we can grieve the Holy Spirit by living in our own
- 19:55power and our own strength. The Holy Spirit wants to fill us
- 19:59every day afresh that we have strength and power and wisdom,
- 20:03ability to to live for the glory of God and the blessings of
- 20:06other people. But in this instance, they have
- 20:09not received the Holy Spirit in the indwelling yet permanent
- 20:14indwelling. And this didn't happen till the
- 20:16day of Pentecost. The apostles received the Holy
- 20:20Spirit at different times. Jesus breathed on them and said
- 20:22receive the Holy Spirit for ministry and the miraculous
- 20:26things that they did. They didn't experience this
- 20:29complete experience that you and I experienced when we got saved
- 20:32and we were born again. When we were born again, the
- 20:35Holy Spirit came to dwell in us at the moment we were born
- 20:40again. It tells us in First Corinthians
- 20:4212/13, For we are all baptized by 1 Spirit into the body of
- 20:48Christ at our conversion, at our belief.
- 20:52It tells us in Romans 8-9, if any man have not the Spirit of
- 20:55Christ, he's none of his. So some movements in
- 20:59Christianity will say to people, have you received the Holy
- 21:02Spirit? And they asked this in Acts.
- 21:05We'll get into that down the road.
- 21:06Since you believe, well, you can't be a Christian if you
- 21:09don't have the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwells in the
- 21:12believer. The Holy Spirit does not in
- 21:14dwell the unbeliever. And the only way you can have
- 21:17the Holy Spirit is to be born again.
- 21:19I don't know your experience when you were born again, but
- 21:23it's pretty significant for most of us because there's a way of
- 21:26life and a new sense of being an experience after you're born
- 21:32again that you didn't have before you were born again.
- 21:35You just know that you know that you know.
- 21:37And it tells us that his Spirit, the Holy Spirit, bears witness
- 21:41with our spirit that we are the sons and daughters of God.
- 21:44So when you come into a church like this, and maybe you've
- 21:47never been here before, if this is your first time, we welcome
- 21:50you. You can feel connected
- 21:52immediately because you're with other people who have the same
- 21:55Spirit. You do the Holy Spirit.
- 21:57And so he's commanding them to not depart from Jerusalem, but
- 22:01to wait for the promise of the Father, which he said, you have
- 22:04heard from me. And he said, for John truly
- 22:07baptized with water. And he's referring to John the
- 22:09Baptist baptism, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit
- 22:13not many days from now. Therefore, when they had come
- 22:17together in verse 6, they asked him saying, Lord, will you at
- 22:20this time restore the Kingdom to Israel?
- 22:23And this is a great question for them to ask because God will one
- 22:27day restore the Kingdom in Israel.
- 22:29This will actually happen the second coming of Christ when the
- 22:32millennial Kingdom begins. But this is not the particular
- 22:36point in time that this is going to occur.
- 22:38But they're familiar with the, you know, Ezekiel 36 and these
- 22:42prophecies that are going to one day be fulfilled.
- 22:45They're asking him the specific question.
- 22:47They're thinking there's going to be a literal Kingdom right
- 22:49now. We're going to have freedom.
- 22:51God's going to roll and reign, and we're not going to have to
- 22:53deal with Roman government or Russian government or Ukrainian
- 22:58government or American government or whatever
- 23:00government you want to say. The good news is one day the
- 23:03Lord himself will be the ruler and he will rule with an iron
- 23:07hand in Jerusalem. There won't be anybody else
- 23:10telling the Lord what to do at that time.
- 23:12That's when there will be real peace, That's when the nations
- 23:15will be under his role and reign and they won't have these rogue
- 23:19governments behaving the way they are now.
- 23:22But anyway, he says it's not for you to know the times or seasons
- 23:26which the Father has put in his own authority.
- 23:30People love to sort of plan and in her mind study.
- 23:34This is when I think Jesus is going to come and they have it
- 23:37all calculated. They can use computers now and
- 23:39algorithms and figure out dates and based upon different feasts
- 23:43in the Old Testament or whatever.
- 23:45I've never met anybody that got it right yet.
- 23:47You know, Jesus isn't anyone that knows the big the return of
- 23:52Christ to this world to set up the Kingdom, and that's the
- 23:54Father. We're so glad you joined us
- 23:58today on this edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 24:01Pastor Clark is teaching through the Book of Acts, which is the
- 24:04only book that chronicles the history of the early church
- 24:08immediately after Jesus's ascension.
- 24:11It gives us a front row seat to how the Gospel began to move
- 24:14outward, starting in Jerusalem and reaching into the heart of
- 24:18the Roman Empire in just three decades.
- 24:21A small group of frightened ordinary believers became a
- 24:25bold, spirit empowered movement that transformed the known
- 24:29world. Acts is not just a history
- 24:32lesson. It's a reminder of what God can
- 24:34do when His people are surrendered, obedient and filled
- 24:38with the Holy Spirit. Their perseverance still
- 24:41inspires us today. May we follow their example and
- 24:46live faithfully for Christ in our own time.
- 24:49We hope today's message encouraged you.
