- 0:01Speaker 1: The Secrets of the Sleeping Porch. My name is Caitlin.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I went to school in Arizona and I had the
- 0:11Speaker 2: pleasure of living in my sorority my sophomore year. It
- 0:15Speaker 2: was a pretty good blend of like sophomore and junior girls,
- 0:19Speaker 2: and I really became close with a lot of the
- 0:21Speaker 2: girls living in. I think everyone should live in the
- 0:24Speaker 2: sorority if they can. But we did have a sleeping
- 0:28Speaker 2: porch there was. It was a front porch and a
- 0:30Speaker 2: back porch, and in total this porch slept about fifty
- 0:34Speaker 2: four of us, so there was fifty around, like I
- 0:36Speaker 2: want to say, around fifty four girls living in the house.
- 0:39Speaker 2: And then we had like our rooms where our clothes were,
- 0:41Speaker 2: but in the porch, you know, those bunk beds are.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Really close together.
- 0:45Speaker 2: They're literally made out of metal, so like any type
- 0:48Speaker 2: of movement, you could hear. And there was this one
- 0:53Speaker 2: time I was not there for this, but it happened
- 0:56Speaker 2: to one of my friends living in so she came
- 0:59Speaker 2: back and like our group chat that.
- 1:01Speaker 1: This had happened. But I believe it was like end.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Of finals week, Christmas break about to start, could have
- 1:09Speaker 2: been another break, but definitely, like thought, everyone was out
- 1:12Speaker 2: of the house, like back home for the holidays type
- 1:15Speaker 2: of thing, and our friend had brought a boy into
- 1:20Speaker 2: the sleeping porch. Totally thought they were alone. They ended
- 1:24Speaker 2: up hooking up with this boy in the sleeping porch
- 1:27Speaker 2: and come to find out they are not alone. There
- 1:30Speaker 2: is someone else either sleeping in the porch or just
- 1:32Speaker 2: like relaxing in there. The lights were off, so you
- 1:36Speaker 2: can't really see if anyone is in there, but they
- 1:38Speaker 2: were not alone. And if you know sorority houses, they're
- 1:43Speaker 2: like the boys can kind of hang out in like
- 1:46Speaker 2: the downstairs space where there's like the couches or we
- 1:48Speaker 2: eat dinner. They're really not supposed to go upstairs or
- 1:52Speaker 2: like where the bedrooms are just for it to be
- 1:53Speaker 2: like a safe space for all the girls, or if
- 1:56Speaker 2: anyone you know, is coming from the shower, like walking
- 1:59Speaker 2: in a towel to their bed room, it's just supposed
- 2:01Speaker 2: to be, you know, that safe space for the girls.
- 2:04Speaker 1: So boys are not supposed.
- 2:05Speaker 2: To be up there. And this boy is literally in
- 2:08Speaker 2: the actual sleeping porch hooking up with their friend. You
- 2:11Speaker 2: can obviously probably hear it, you know, being the other
- 2:14Speaker 2: person in the room, like with those small metal beds.
- 2:17Speaker 1: You can probably hear something.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Going on and this person just like gets up and
- 2:21Speaker 2: leaves the room. I don't know if we ever found
- 2:24Speaker 2: out like who that person was, or if that person
- 2:27Speaker 2: found out who was hooking.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Up with someone, but it was.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Such a funny story, like no harm, no foul, no
- 2:34Speaker 2: one gets hurt. So it's funny to look back at
- 2:38Speaker 2: and think of some of those funny memories. There's definitely
- 2:41Speaker 2: probably some other crazy stuff, but that's what first comes
- 2:44Speaker 2: to mind. And I truly loved living in my sorority
- 2:48Speaker 2: I think everyone should take the opportunity to do it. It
- 2:51Speaker 2: is so worth it and you'll seriously have some of
- 2:53Speaker 2: the most funniest epic memories with your friends there.
- 2:59Speaker 3: I have so many memories from living in the sorority
- 3:02Speaker 3: house and having to sleep in a sleeping porch. I
- 3:05Speaker 3: don't even know where to begin. The first thing is
- 3:07Speaker 3: when someone had to go to the bathroom, the person
- 3:09Speaker 3: on the bottom bunk, which was me, would wake up
- 3:12Speaker 3: because they would step on your moutress, your bunk bed
- 3:14Speaker 3: would shake, the floor would make noises because the sorority
- 3:18Speaker 3: house was super old, so you were constantly waking up
- 3:21Speaker 3: and the noises were just insane. In the sleeping porch.
- 3:25Speaker 3: There was snoring, there was people listening to music with
- 3:27Speaker 3: their AirPods. In that you could still hear people watching Netflix,
- 3:30Speaker 3: people sleep talking, people actually talking, people coming in and out,
- 3:34Speaker 3: people drunk coming in and out.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I mean, it was.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Like plugs wouldn't even help. And the one story I
- 3:42Speaker 3: will never forget is I was going to bed one
- 3:45Speaker 3: night and as I was pulling on my sheets getting
- 3:48Speaker 3: into my bed.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I felt something super like.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Wet and slimy, and I could not figure out what
- 3:55Speaker 3: it was because it was so dark in the sleeping porch.
- 3:59Speaker 3: So I go on my phone and I turned my
- 4:01Speaker 3: flash on and it's a freaking banana peel with like
- 4:06Speaker 3: a little part of the banana still there. That's someone happy,
- 4:08Speaker 3: And I was so grossed out.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I didn't know what to do.
- 4:12Speaker 3: I had to quickly pull an extra blanket up and
- 4:15Speaker 3: just sleep on top of it because it was already
- 4:17Speaker 3: like two am since we were going out that night,
- 4:20Speaker 3: and it was not a good time to change my
- 4:23Speaker 3: sheets because that would have frustrated everyone around me. So
- 4:26Speaker 3: the next morning I went downstairs for breakfast and I
- 4:29Speaker 3: asked who was eating a banana?
- 4:32Speaker 1: And how did it land and end up in my bed?
- 4:36Speaker 3: And a girl who literally lives on the opposite side
- 4:39Speaker 3: of the sleeping porch said she was really sorry. She
- 4:43Speaker 3: was really drunk, but she was eating a banana because
- 4:45Speaker 3: she had a really bad eye twitch that night, and
- 4:49Speaker 3: she happened to throw the banana because she thought it
- 4:52Speaker 3: was funny and just left it there and it landed
- 4:54Speaker 3: on my bed. I mean, I don't even know how
- 4:56Speaker 3: that's real. I'm not making this up. It was disgusting.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And so from that for moving on, I always looked
- 5:03Speaker 3: at my sheets and I always put layers and layers
- 5:05Speaker 3: of blankets so nothing would get like inside my bed.
- 5:09Speaker 3: It was I will just never forget that.
- 5:10Speaker 1: It was so gross.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Hi, my name is Emma, and I went to college
- 5:15Speaker 4: in Los Angeles and I wanted to tell you a
- 5:18Speaker 4: little bit about it. Particularly memorable experience I had living
- 5:21Speaker 4: in my sororityes sleeping porch my sophomore year. So our
- 5:25Speaker 4: sitting porch was like the big eight girl room in
- 5:27Speaker 4: my sorority house, so it was a lot of fun.
- 5:30Speaker 4: It was like this really big room with two sets
- 5:32Speaker 4: of monk beds and four beds and this big vanity
- 5:34Speaker 4: at the front, so we had a lot of fun.
- 5:36Speaker 1: But with it being such a big.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Room, we were definitely like the host of a lot
- 5:39Speaker 4: of the pregames in the house, and most notorious of
- 5:43Speaker 4: those was our pregame for our biggest state party that
- 5:46Speaker 4: we threw in the spring. So a little bit of
- 5:48Speaker 4: background about this date party. This was one where we
- 5:52Speaker 4: would anonymously invite our dates and they would have no
- 5:55Speaker 4: idea which member of the sorority had invited them, and
- 5:58Speaker 4: they would arrive separate from all the girls to the venue,
- 6:01Speaker 4: which was usually at like a big club in downtown LA.
- 6:03Speaker 4: So it was always a lot of fun trying to
- 6:05Speaker 4: figure out like who who's everyone's dates were. But because
- 6:09Speaker 4: of that, we would have to have like a really
- 6:11Speaker 4: big pregame of all the girls, and we would do
- 6:15Speaker 4: that at the sority house in our sleeping porch. So
- 6:18Speaker 4: this was a notoriously very drunk occasion and definitely was
- 6:21Speaker 4: one of our wildest nights. But my year, I would
- 6:24Speaker 4: say had a particularly heinous end. Basically, we would throw
- 6:29Speaker 4: this big pregame where like we cover every surface in
- 6:32Speaker 4: the room with like different drinks. Everyone's passing around handles
- 6:34Speaker 4: the entire night and we had like beer bongs all
- 6:37Speaker 4: over the room and wine bags hanging from the ceiling,
- 6:39Speaker 4: which was so fun but definitely a little hectic, And
- 6:44Speaker 4: when we got to the venue, one of my roommates
- 6:47Speaker 4: had unfortunately fallen ill after the long bus ride, as
- 6:51Speaker 4: was pretty classic for events like this, so all of
- 6:56Speaker 4: us were helping her, like, you know, everyone's been there
- 6:59Speaker 4: at some point, everyone's been pretty been down bad before.
- 7:01Speaker 4: We're all helping her out, get her home, and like,
- 7:03Speaker 4: definitely a couple other girls also had a similar fate
- 7:07Speaker 4: after the evening's festivities, but again pretty characteristic for an
- 7:10Speaker 4: event like this.
- 7:12Speaker 1: However, the next day.
- 7:14Speaker 4: We found out that it was not just a hangover
- 7:16Speaker 4: but instead the stomach flow and all of us who
- 7:20Speaker 4: had been helping a bunch of drunk girls around the
- 7:22Speaker 4: entire night, passing around wine bags, sharing drinks the whole night,
- 7:25Speaker 4: had caught ora virus and the entire sorority house, like
- 7:30Speaker 4: all sixty of us girls came down with it in
- 7:31Speaker 4: the span of twenty four hours, and it was literally
- 7:35Speaker 4: unlike any experience I've ever had, Like every single bathroom
- 7:39Speaker 4: install had girls curled up on the floor like texting
- 7:41Speaker 4: each other, so heinous, and our chefs in the sorority
- 7:46Speaker 4: house even changed the menu for the week just to
- 7:48Speaker 4: like soup and ginger ale and crackers because everyone was
- 7:52Speaker 4: so down bad, and even like a bunch of the
- 7:56Speaker 4: other sororities on the road like got win that this
- 7:58Speaker 4: was all happening, and we got like banned from Friday
- 8:02Speaker 4: brunch that week, and they would like walk by screaming
- 8:04Speaker 4: things into our windows about our sorority having the plague
- 8:07Speaker 4: and various things, and all of the fraternities ended up
- 8:10Speaker 4: getting this mystery stomach bug because of their attendance at
- 8:14Speaker 4: the state party. So I can't say it's something we
- 8:16Speaker 4: were necessarily proud of, but definitely a really funny memory
- 8:20Speaker 4: that we all bonded over and brought a lot of
- 8:22Speaker 4: us girls living in the house at the time a
- 8:23Speaker 4: lot closer. So a lot of fun memories coming out
- 8:26Speaker 4: of living in our sleeping porch. But I can't say
- 8:29Speaker 4: that was the most fun, but definitely memorable.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Okay, So when I was in.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Lived in my sworty house, I went to a large
- 8:52Speaker 5: school in Los Angeles and I was in CAPA Alpha Beta,
- 8:57Speaker 5: and we had an eight person sleeping porch or bunk
- 9:01Speaker 5: beds or two sets of bunk beds and four other
- 9:05Speaker 5: just standing beds. We had like a big closet area
- 9:08Speaker 5: and this huge vanity. We would host pre games, We
- 9:10Speaker 5: would host all sorts of different things. And when you
- 9:15Speaker 5: live in a room with that many girls in college,
- 9:17Speaker 5: you have to get kind of creative as far as
- 9:21Speaker 5: what you're going to do if you're ever going to
- 9:23Speaker 5: bring a boy home. And our house mom was pretty chill.
- 9:27Speaker 5: She didn't really care for she kind of it was
- 9:31Speaker 5: kind of a don't ask, don't tell situation if you
- 9:34Speaker 5: were going to bring a guy back to the house.
- 9:36Speaker 5: There weren't like very strict rules about it. And anyways,
- 9:42Speaker 5: what me and the girls who lived in our sleeping
- 9:44Speaker 5: porch would do is we had this big study room
- 9:47Speaker 5: called the pit in the basement, and it had a
- 9:50Speaker 5: bunch of desk, but it also had like a little
- 9:52Speaker 5: couch seating area and you could like rent out the
- 9:57Speaker 5: pit to hold study g or something, but otherwise it
- 10:02Speaker 5: was like a.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Silent study area.
- 10:05Speaker 5: And what our girls would do if we slept, you know,
- 10:08Speaker 5: all the girls you slept in porch, you would rent
- 10:12Speaker 5: out pit, like the pit really late at night, so
- 10:18Speaker 5: that in case we were ever going to bring like
- 10:21Speaker 5: a guy back, that we would have a space to
- 10:24Speaker 5: do it, because you can't do it in your bed
- 10:26Speaker 5: obviously if you live in a room with eight other girls.
- 10:29Speaker 5: So one night after a date party, I decided to
- 10:34Speaker 5: bring my date down to the dungeon of pit so
- 10:38Speaker 5: that we could make out on the couch. And there
- 10:43Speaker 5: I thought it was like it has a study room
- 10:46Speaker 5: that has like a row of desks, but in front
- 10:50Speaker 5: of the desks, like on another wall are is like
- 10:54Speaker 5: a seating area and with with like two couches, and
- 10:59Speaker 5: I had thought nobody was in there. We were pretty
- 11:03Speaker 5: drunk after the state party and it was like twelve thirty,
- 11:06Speaker 5: but we also went to a very competitive school where
- 11:09Speaker 5: people tended to stay up really late to study, and
- 11:13Speaker 5: I thought no one was in there, and we were
- 11:15Speaker 5: about ten minutes into her makeout and I realized that
- 11:19Speaker 5: someone was on the other side of the wall like
- 11:22Speaker 5: I've been studying, and I didn't realize it until I
- 11:26Speaker 5: heard someone the door open and close and someone had
- 11:29Speaker 5: like walked out, and I got up to look around
- 11:32Speaker 5: to see, you know, who had been there or was
- 11:35Speaker 5: someone still there?
- 11:35Speaker 1: Did someone come in?
- 11:36Speaker 5: Did someone walk out?
- 11:37Speaker 1: And it happened that yeah.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Someone had been in there and they left their computer
- 11:41Speaker 5: their laptop open, and they had just left to let
- 11:44Speaker 5: us finish our business, and we did and ended up
- 11:48Speaker 5: walking upstairs. We lived in the house with sixty girls,
- 11:52Speaker 5: but we were all really close.
- 11:53Speaker 1: So after.
- 11:56Speaker 5: We had been done making out in the pit, I
- 11:58Speaker 5: texted our group chat said sorry to whoever was studying downstairs.
- 12:04Speaker 5: The ghost is clear. You may return to your studying.
- 12:09Speaker 5: And we all laugh about it now. And I'm still
- 12:12Speaker 5: friends with those girls and I haven't seen that guy since.
- 12:14Speaker 5: So just goes to show value sisterhood. But yeah, we
- 12:20Speaker 5: had to get pretty creative when we were living in
- 12:22Speaker 5: our sleeping porch, especially if you wanted to make out
- 12:25Speaker 5: with a guy. So that's my advice to anyone listening,
- 12:29Speaker 5: if you are currently in the sleeping porch, find alternative
- 12:34Speaker 5: ways to get your makeout in.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Okay, thanks, bye. Okay.
- 12:40Speaker 6: So I need to preface this by saying that our
- 12:42Speaker 6: sorority house was built in nineteen twenty three, which means
- 12:45Speaker 6: it has character, but it was obviously haunted. We had
- 12:49Speaker 6: a sleeping porch, so we had a big room and
- 12:52Speaker 6: we all would pile in and after night out.
- 12:54Speaker 1: It was a total free for all. I mean there
- 12:55Speaker 1: was like one girl fully sleeping on a pool float.
- 12:58Speaker 6: But one night, during run Us, I'm on my cot stone, cold, sober,
- 13:03Speaker 6: and I watch as a picture frame slowly slides off
- 13:07Speaker 6: the wall, pauses midair for two full seconds, and then
- 13:11Speaker 6: gently sets itself down on the floor, gently like it
- 13:14Speaker 6: was considerate. I screamed my face off. Everyone told me
- 13:18Speaker 6: I was crazy and seeing something and tired from rush,
- 13:22Speaker 6: but I saw what I saw. The second thing that
- 13:24Speaker 6: happened is one night it was thirsty Thirsty Thursday, and
- 13:29Speaker 6: half the chapter was back on the porch, various states
- 13:32Speaker 6: of drunkenness, and Casey falls asleep holding her dominoes. At
- 13:36Speaker 6: two am, every single window slams open at the exact
- 13:40Speaker 6: same moment, like wind rushing through, cups flying. Were all
- 13:44Speaker 6: so freaked out there was no explanation. On another night,
- 13:49Speaker 6: the lights started flickering and a voice came through the
- 13:53Speaker 6: baby monitor that we use as an intercom don't judge.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Us, and said, get out. I mean, we lost our minds.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Someone was then like, it's just Lives.
- 14:04Speaker 6: She's doing that to scare us, and then from across
- 14:07Speaker 6: the room, Live goes that was not me, and we
- 14:09Speaker 6: all screamed again. I mean, that place is haunted. I
- 14:14Speaker 6: loved it so much. I'm actually going back this.
- 14:16Speaker 7: Weekendl So, my sorority had what's known as a sleeping porch,
- 14:24Speaker 7: and if you don't know what a sleeping porch is,
- 14:26Speaker 7: it sounds misleading.
- 14:27Speaker 1: We were not actually sleeping on the porch, but we.
- 14:30Speaker 7: Were sleeping in this giant room that had I think
- 14:34Speaker 7: about twenty five beds at my sorority house and they
- 14:37Speaker 7: were all bunk beds, and a bunch of the girls
- 14:40Speaker 7: would sleep in there. And I have to preface too,
- 14:43Speaker 7: it was freezing in this room, so everyone had electric
- 14:48Speaker 7: blankets like we would be cozy. I was sleeping in
- 14:51Speaker 7: sweatshirts and sweatpants like it. It was rough in there,
- 14:55Speaker 7: but for the most part, it was pretty fun, not
- 14:59Speaker 7: too bad until one night.
- 15:02Speaker 1: I'm about to go to sleep again.
- 15:04Speaker 7: I'm under my electric blanket, I'm freezing but about to
- 15:08Speaker 7: doze off, and I hear this like vibrating noise, and
- 15:13Speaker 7: I was like, what is that? And I didn't want to,
- 15:15Speaker 7: like obviously say anything out loud. I didn't want to
- 15:17Speaker 7: wake up any of the girls. But I was like
- 15:20Speaker 7: that's weird. I've never heard that before. Come to find out,
- 15:25Speaker 7: someone was using a vibrator in this room where twenty
- 15:28Speaker 7: five girls are sleeping, and I was mortified. I didn't
- 15:32Speaker 7: know who it was. It sounded like it was near me.
- 15:35Speaker 7: I obviously didn't want to, like again, ask who was
- 15:40Speaker 7: using this, And I didn't even want to speculate because
- 15:43Speaker 7: I was like, I don't think I want to even
- 15:44Speaker 7: know who's doing this in their own time, in this room.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Filled with girls.
- 15:49Speaker 7: So that was a horror story my experience in a
- 15:53Speaker 7: sleeping porch.
- 15:54Speaker 1: I still to this day don't know who it was.
- 15:56Speaker 7: I kind of speculate, but if you're in a sleeping
- 16:00Speaker 7: where it's just don't do that in there.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Very mortifying.
