- 1:55from Ogg to Newspaper is going to join us. We're going to get into
- 1:57some things going on in the world of politic Dix. What's happened since the
- 2:00last time Stephen was on the show, well a lot and even some things
- 2:04have happened in the world of politics since I lasted a show, which was
- 2:07the day before Thanksgiving. We'll get into that, plus come it up a
- 2:09little bit later on to the show State Senator and guy wants to be the
- 2:15next Attorney General of the state of West Virginia. Talking about Mike Stewart will
- 2:17be in studio this morning. That field on the Republican side originally three with
- 2:23Ryan Weld, current State Auditor J. B. McCuskey, and Mike Stewart.
- 2:28Well, mister Weld, as we talked a little bit about and I
- 2:30know Hopey had him on the show one day last week. Mister Weld is
- 2:32opted not to run for attorney General. He will instead remain in his current
- 2:38position or at least attempt to as state Senator. So we're going to talk
- 2:40to Ryan Weld coming up, or actually talk to Mike Stewart about the Ryan
- 2:44Weld situation. Covering up a little bit later, Rod, it's Monday,
- 2:47and you know what that means. We welcome in a different mayor from around
- 2:53the area this morning. Ever, good friend Scott James from the City of
- 2:55Saint Albans, the land of the Red Dragons. How are you, sir?
- 2:59Doing great? Dave? Always a pleasure to be here, Man,
- 3:01always a pleasure to have you here, Sir, how's you I'm going to
- 3:05ask you because I know you're a sports guy. We'll get the sports stuff
- 3:07out of the way. How are we looking in St Albans boys and girls
- 3:10basketball? Well, the boys scrimmage Saturday at two o'clock, I think it
- 3:15was against Scott. I can get to a team. We were up visiting
- 3:17Becky's family, but I was told they looked very good. The girls teams
- 3:24got a lot of high expectations. They did very well last year and only
- 3:30lost one player. So we're excited about basketball season. Should be fun in
- 3:36St Alban. It always is in St Alban's so how overall We'll get into
- 3:38specifics in a moment. How are things going in St Alban? It's going
- 3:42great. We just keep moving on. We had a couple more ribbon cuttings
- 3:46there last weekend weekend before last what you have and Montenero, Cakrie and micaroons
- 3:53up on the east end of town. And the other one was you asked
- 4:00me too quick, brother, It's all available I'm sure on your under social
- 4:04media. Yeah, it was down on Old Main what was it. It'll
- 4:11come to me, It'll come to you here voluntarily. And we have another
- 4:15store opening up on sixth Avenue soon and so you know, we're excited.
- 4:20We just want to keep making Saint Albans the place people want to be part
- 4:26of. So we're very fortunate with our city Council, our citizens, our
- 4:32our volunteerism is way up and we need that, especially during this time of
- 4:40the year. We've got a lot of events and activities coming on. Yeah,
- 4:43I want to talk about those. Get the Festival of Lights, talk
- 4:45about that. Yes, Tuesday last week we had to walk through it rained,
- 4:49held the crowd down a little bit, still, probably had between two
- 4:53hundred and fifty three hundred people. Wednesday we had hay rides through the lights,
- 4:58and then Friday we opened up for the drive through. So numbers have
- 5:01been good over the weekend and we're always excited that people come to Saint Albans
- 5:08and visit one of the oldest and best light shows in the state of West
- 5:13Virginia. Now, for people that may not know exactly where is that,
- 5:16that is at City Park, which come down on Canal Terrace and you'll turn
- 5:21up Vine Street, go to stop signed veer right onto Valley Pike and you'll
- 5:28run right into it. I've said this on the show before. Between what's
- 5:30going on there, Chris, you know what's going on with the light the
- 5:32night over at the Go Mark Ballpark. There's I mean every community in the
- 5:35area seems like it's got some kind of a light display. If you like
- 5:39Christmas lights, there's no excuse for you to pretty much go around West Virginia
- 5:43and our part of West Virginia anyway, pretty much every night and there'd be
- 5:46a different one. I mean, there's just so many of them out there.
- 5:48There is. And you know, people were like, well, what
- 5:51do you think Go Mark Park's gonna do? That's just going to people when
- 5:57they go out, they'll visit two or three locations in one. That just
- 6:00gives them another option and it brings really I think everybody will feed off everybody
- 6:05and make everybody have more attendance. Indeed, indeed, got a text here
- 6:09for you somebody have with a question, So can you if you can get
- 6:12the potholes on Pennsylvania Avenue across from the the VFW fixed. There are five
- 6:16potholes in the road, and to avoid them, a person must drive into
- 6:19the oncoming lane or on the shoulder. Well, Pennsylvania Avenue State Road.
- 6:27That's first I heard of the potholes. I drive out Pennsylvania back in.
- 6:30I haven't hit any, but obviously there must be some there. So when
- 6:34we get off here, I will call John BOYD down Public Works. He'll
- 6:40call the state and we'll let them know they need to be patched. It's
- 6:44always going to be a good result when you call someone named John boy.
- 6:46Yeah, I've always said that, and I always said that. So I
- 6:49want to get back to the fessional lights and we'll move on to some other
- 6:51things, just real quick, approximately and a you know ballpark. Figure how
- 6:56many different how many people come through there every year? Well, base it
- 7:00on cars or however you want to. I'm just kind of curious. On
- 7:02average, we base it pretty much on cars. But on average it's around
- 7:09thirteen thousand to fourteen thousand cars. Now during the COVID, huh, it
- 7:15got all the way up eighteen thousand US. Yeah, because people will stir
- 7:18crazy. They wanted that out. They just said, look, shiny object,
- 7:23we're there for sure. So we're expecting another great season. Of course
- 7:30the weather plays rolling in it and so far, so good. And again
- 7:36the average is between thirteen fourteen thousand. That's amazing. And a lot of
- 7:41those people may or don't just come and look at lights and go home.
- 7:44Yeah, I mean, and that's where you guys come in economy development.
- 7:46You encourage them to come down to Old Main, to go to Shuckers or
- 7:50the Tap or any of those other fine restaurants that are down there and have
- 7:54you a bite to eat or drink or whatever. Shop some stores, yes,
- 7:59exactly. And you know, the more events that we put on that
- 8:01brings people to Saint Albans, the better our economy gets because once people come
- 8:07to Saint Albans and visit our stores or restaurants, they keep coming back.
- 8:13Indeed, again we're talking to Mayor Scott James here from Saint Albans on Mayor
- 8:18Monday and the Voice Charleston WCCHS. This Saturday is this Saturday, that Christmas
- 8:24preade it is and your tree lighting as well. Tree lighting up out.
- 8:28Christmas Parade starts at three o'clock there at Park Street and sixth Avenue at Saint
- 8:33Francis School and it'll go down Sixth Avenue up third a block and then we
- 8:39turn on the Main Street and Old Maine and end up at the Loop.
- 8:43Always a great turnout for this. Patty Swingo does a wonderful, wonderful job
- 8:50of putting this together. And they start at the corner of Park Street and
- 8:56they line up on all the way back to the high School there Washington,
- 9:00and that's a big old parade, it is, it is. And then
- 9:05about five point thirty, when it turns dark, we're gonna have our tree
- 9:07lighting. And where's the tree on Old Main on Old Maine and Santa We'll
- 9:11be there and afterwards handlers so the children can visit. And then after that,
- 9:20of course, we got the luminaries at Cunningham Memorial Park that night.
- 9:26They'll start liking them about three o'clock. And guys, I'm telling you,
- 9:30bar and bad weather, anything that is a gorgeous event. You drive through
- 9:37the cemetery and you get up top and you look at all those luminaries that
- 9:41are lit throughout the cemetery. I mean, it's it's awesome. And we
- 9:46got a lighted boat parade that lou Wendell Marina puts on and that'll start six
- 9:54or seven o'clock, I believe, and it's right there on Canal River,
- 9:58and great place to watch it from is Roadside Park. Indeed, again,
- 10:03I mean I've said this before, Mayor, I don't know of a lot
- 10:05of towns, with all due respect to the other towns, especially the ones
- 10:09in here in the Canal of out of who do Christmas as well or as
- 10:11big as Saint Aubans does. Well. Thank you very much, and and
- 10:16and again it's a wonderful time of the year. You know, I always
- 10:20encourage people remember the reason for the season, and it's not about getting and
- 10:24given, but the greatest gift we ever received here on earth. And so
- 10:31we want to play it up. We've got some great volunteers, and you
- 10:35know, we started something new with the festival lights. We used to have
- 10:39sand up top of the hill, but you know during COVID we couldn't do
- 10:43that and it always created traffic issues. So we've got a Santa House over
- 10:48at Roadside Park that's opening the same hours that the Festival Lights goes on,
- 10:56so people can take their children their grandchildren over before they go through the lights
- 11:01or after they go through the lights, either or either or whatever works best
- 11:03for them. Yes, I got a text here about potholes again. Okay,
- 11:09this is pothole for Monday, Texas. How about the city fixes the
- 11:13pothole and then builds a state for it. Obviously the state doesn't want to
- 11:15take the time or give the effort to fix potholes. Is that something that
- 11:18you can do well? The problem is when you do that, then they
- 11:22expect you to take care of it from now on. Yeah, and you
- 11:26can't build the state. You're not gonna get reimbursed for that. But we'll
- 11:31be in touch with them. And what we've done in the past is if
- 11:33they don't get to it, we'll get it taken care of. Okay,
- 11:39we're not gonna pave the road, but we have fixed potholes the Third Street
- 11:43underpass, which is a state road. We go down there periodically and patch
- 11:46it when it gets pretty bad. And the state doesn't take care of it.
- 11:50So you know, they've got a lot to tend to. I don't
- 11:52know if they know about these potholes, but they will after today. They're
- 11:56job always gonna take care of that. John will get on talk about small
- 12:01business Saturday. How were things this past Saturday in Saint Aude. It was
- 12:03fantastic. We had great crowds down on Old Maine and throughout Saint Aubans.
- 12:07Really, Becky and I got down there to they did some shopping in and
- 12:13out of the stores down there, and uh, but everybody told me there
- 12:16were great crowds down there. And you know, I had a granddaughter playing
- 12:20basketball had to go watch at And then we went up and visited Becky's family
- 12:24for a while, and then we came back down and uh did some shopping
- 12:30on Old Maine. So, uh, the crowds were great. And you
- 12:33know, guys, this is I had this discussion with my son, you
- 12:37know, he's of the streaming era and all this and that. He said,
- 12:41why don't you just order from Amazon? And I said, well,
- 12:43Amazon doesn't sponsor the Little League teams. You know, they don't donate to
- 12:48events and charities throughout our community. You know, that's why shopping small,
- 12:54shop local is so important to our communities, because these are the businesses that
- 13:01do sponsor Little League teams, that give to events and charities and help out.
- 13:07Goodness said it better myself, Mayor. It's always a pleasure to see
- 13:11it. I'm going to be in Saint Albans. I think Saturday afternoon,
- 13:13I'm kind of helping out with some of the because there's this Saturday is like
- 13:16Christmas Parade day. Man, there's Christmas parades like all over and all of
- 13:20our stations are going to be involved in. I think they've got me roped
- 13:22into driving one of the vehicles this Saturday in Saint Albans. So I'm looking
- 13:26forward to to hanging out there in the Land of the Red Dragons. That's
- 13:28awesome, man. We always welcome Dave Allen down to the big city.
- 13:33All right, all right, Scott James, Mayor of Saint Albans, I
- 13:35appreciate you, man. We'll talk again soon. Thanks a lot, Thank

- 16:42but I promise you he's in his vehicle listening right now. So Mayor,
- 16:47I have a question or comment for you. What happened to the Washington
- 16:49Memorial marker from nineteen thirty two that was at the same Alban school that was
- 16:53recently demolished. Will it be restored somewhere? I have some history on these
- 16:59that were uh put up in several places, So Mayor James and I'll have
- 17:03him back on again, probably sometime during the month of December, so we'll
- 17:06try to get that question answered then. But Mayor James, you got homework
- 17:08to do in addition to fixing the uh the potholes. Stephen Allen Adams from
- 17:14Ogden Newspapers is here. Good morning, sir, How are you? Good
- 17:15morning Dave? How wash your Thanksgiving? It was good? It was good.
- 17:19I hope you and the lovely Jessica had a wonderful Thanksgiving as well,
- 17:22nice and quiet. When you only have to cook for a father and a
- 17:26mother in law and your wife, it makes everything well, I can,
- 17:29I can do you one better than that. It's just me and my wife
- 17:30and the cat so so so so uh yeah we uh and and the and
- 17:34a Cowboys victory. You know that makes my that makes my Thanksgiving even even
- 17:40better. I have no dog in the fight on NFL, but congratulations if
- 17:42it means that you had a win. And do we know if Pushkin had
- 17:45a win with his name? No Pushkin? H Actually I think I read
- 17:49online he actually went up and was at the game when when when the Jets
- 17:53were playing and they got it handed to him? I think pushing He's gonna
- 17:56be on the show one day this week, so I'll have two ask him
- 18:00about that, all right, So I couldn't remember, neither one of us
- 18:04could remember whether i'd had you on since Senator meant that he wasn't going to
- 18:11run for reelection. But give me just your quick comment on that, because
- 18:15I saw over the weekend. I didn't get to see the show myself,
- 18:18but somewhere he did an interview. Maybe you know that I don't social media
- 18:22or something where Senator Mansion admitted that a run for president as a third party
- 18:29would be a long shot. And I think that's pretty much where I am
- 18:33on that as well. So you want to talk about that a little bit.
- 18:34Sure, Well, Senator Mansion's many things, but he's not an idiot.
- 18:37He's a smart guy. He's had a very successful political career. I
- 18:41think he knows this. I had to call him about this a couple of
- 18:45weeks ago, and I talked with Hoppy about it, and I called it
- 18:47his finding himself tour or an image in my head is him running across the
- 18:52country much like Forrest Scott saw that you posted that that was awesome. Yeah,
- 18:56but I don't mean that disrespectfully. ASK mean obviously he I think he.
- 19:00I think he has to go out and try to listen and figure it
- 19:03out, because I mean, he's been talked about. I think he has
- 19:06to say face a little bit and do that. But I think he knows
- 19:08it's really a tough haul. So I think he'll go off. He'll form
- 19:11his little moderate group that he's doing with his daughter. They're raising money for
- 19:17that right now. And I even have a special theory that I think maybe
- 19:22he could pull Joe Lieberman and get himself on the ballot as an independent candidate
- 19:26for you a Senate down the road, if he thinks there's a chance that
- 19:29he can do it. But that's a theory, I mean, because right
- 19:33now, let's face, with all due respect to Alex Mooney, this is
- 19:36Jim Justice's race. I mean, the poles keep going up, and we'll
- 19:38talk about that. Tom Sussman, our good friend, just came out with
- 19:41a pole and he talked. He was on Hobby talking about it last week.
- 19:44But right now, this race for Senate is without a doubt, Jim
- 19:48Justice is to lose, and there's no indication that he's going to. Brad
- 19:52and I were talking about this earlier this morning. The more it much like
- 19:56Donald Trump, the more negative that comes out, the more positive his poll
- 20:00numbers are. Well, that's it. I mean. Mooney got in nearly
- 20:04just over or under two years ago, because he literally announced for US Senate
- 20:10just days after winning in the new second congressional district in twenty twenty two,
- 20:15So he got in super early. I wrote about this in my column in
- 20:18Ogden Newspapers this week that came out today. He got in super early.
- 20:22Has that helped him? Look, Klepper Growth dedicated what up to ten million
- 20:27dollars for his campaign. They've already spent nearly five hundred thousand according to the
- 20:32FBC report. I just looked at at the end of last week. Think
- 20:34of all the headlines you would have been written by Brad by myself in regards
- 20:38to Justice's businesses, some of the issues going on in the department, at
- 20:41agencies. Nothing is moving the needle. The polls have been very consistent on
- 20:45this in voters that are paying attention are very engaged on this particular race because
- 20:49it's gotten national attention. And still Mooney can't get any traction. But Dave
- 20:55Alan chowing five, any line brought to you a part by General Hardware and
- 20:57Lumber of Winfield. From kitchen, the paints to deck, straight framing,
- 21:00would roofie metal, anything else you'll need, you'll find it at General Hardware,
- 21:04number of Winfield. Now let's go back to that polling information again.
- 21:07Tom Sussman, our friend that does a consulting business, and WMOV Radio and
- 21:11ravens Wood came out with the Polly talked about it on a hobby anything.
- 21:14Any numbers it's been well documented. But any numbers to kind of stick out
- 21:17to you on those polls, I will tell you what really sticks out to
- 21:19mean. This goes back into whether what's too early for a candidate to announce.
- 21:23And I think most of the candidates have announced have announced. I don't.
- 21:27I wouldn't say too early or not too early, but they've announced early
- 21:32enough to start raising money, getting name recognition, going to all the dinners
- 21:36and all the parades and that sort of thing. And the numbers that keep
- 21:37sticking out to me are the number of undecideds and don't knows, and particularly
- 21:42some of these lower races, even the governor's race to some extent, but
- 21:45it's not that bad. I think the don't know unsure somewhere in the twenty
- 21:51percent range in that one. But you've got some of these races where you've
- 21:53got forty percent, fifty percent and upwards of people that don't know in our
- 22:00sure And really, when you're looking at say the Attorney General's race, I
- 22:04know Stay Centner, Mike Stewart will be on after me. Now it's a
- 22:08two man race. When this poll came out, it had pulled well Ryan
- 22:12Weld Stay sundered ryin Weld who literally just dropped out of the race. So
- 22:15now it's between state auder JB. Mccusky and Stuart. It's a two man
- 22:21race. But even when it was a three man race, I mean,
- 22:23I think it was somewhere close to fifty ish percent that were unsigned and don't
- 22:30know. Now that's good for someone to say, like Stuart who the last
- 22:33couple of polls we've seen, he has been down, but it's so early
- 22:37you really can't freak out about that, all right, and he's down in
- 22:41money too, but that gives him time, obviously to sway a whole bunch
- 22:45of voters that just don't know. I haven't really engaged in that race.
- 22:48Insanely early, Steven, And this is what I preach about this on the
- 22:52show, and I know you talk about it as well, is that no
- 22:56one is even officially a candidate yet, I mean until January. So but
- 23:00it's just insanely early right now. It is insanely early. And I compared
- 23:06to the like putting up the Christmas tree. You know how early is too
- 23:08early for putting up the Christmas tree? We did it a good two weeks
- 23:12before Thanksgiving. You know what is too early you either way, voters are
- 23:18not engaged with these races, particularly pardon me down to ballot until when you
- 23:25get to like April or May. Now, obviously, this US Senate race
- 23:29is a high profile race. Sure there are more people in rest and state
- 23:32the governor's race because it is also a high profile race. But it's gonna
- 23:34take voters a while to get engaged. And I would say to the candidates
- 23:38that are down in some of these polls, whether you think the polls legit
- 23:41or has issues, take some heart in knowing that you've got time to get
- 23:45your message out there, and you still got time to sway those voters are.
- 23:49Are still a lot of time to get the votes that you need.
- 23:52Especially again, what normally gets the attention are the races for Senate, and
- 23:57because that's where the most he spent. You're going to see the television commercials,
- 24:02you're gonna hear the radio ads and so on and so forth. Not
- 24:04as much engagement for Attorney General, Secretary of State, and a lot of
- 24:08these races. But speaking of the race for attorney General, you mentioned it
- 24:11earlier, again, Mike Stewart's going to be on immediately after you, uh,
- 24:15since we last talked. We know this that Ryan Weld State Center has
- 24:18dropped out of the race. Now it is going to be a battle on
- 24:22the Republican side, and let's face it, it's going to be that's going
- 24:25to be the election right there, between State Auditor J. B. McCuskey
- 24:27and Mike Stewart. It's already gotten a little chip with the three of them
- 24:32in there. It had gotten a little chippy with the relationship that Weld had
- 24:36with McCuskey. They were really good friends, and that kind of went away,
- 24:38and then Stuart's kind of taken on, you know, both of them,
- 24:42one way or the other. He's going to start hitting it really really
- 24:45hard against JB. McCuskey. Your your thoughts on that battle, sure,
- 24:49well, well Weld out of the race. Weld and mcusky, of course,
- 24:52we know, are friends, but also are pretty s They were well,
- 24:55yeah, they were, They may be now they may be they could
- 24:57be. Well, they're very close politically, and I would say both are
- 25:03either Some might conserve him traditional, some might consider it moderate. I know
- 25:07Mike Stuart concerns and liberal Republicans, but nonetheless they had similarity similarities. Now
- 25:12with Weld, out of the race, they won't take votes from each other.
- 25:15It also frees up some votes in the north, because Well was certainly
- 25:18going to take from the Northern Panhandle at least. So now, at least
- 25:23for the moment, it's a two man race in the Republican primary, and
- 25:26that gives Mike Stewart a real opportunity to say, here's where I am,
- 25:32Here's where my opponent is, see how far to the left he is,
- 25:34see where I'm at, And it really gives him an opportunity that he didn't
- 25:38have before. I think it was harder for him with a three man race.
- 25:41Now that he can really separate himself from JB. McCuskey, I think
- 25:47the closer you get to the primary, I do think you're going to see
- 25:51him try to get some votes. He can go for the political route,
- 25:53and he also can go for the southern West Virginia out too. That'll help
- 25:56him. So now who gets the stern Painhandle I don't know. That's that's
- 26:02where all the heavy campaign needs to happen. Seeven the Downlands from Ogden Newspapers

- 26:29the Secretary of State's race from MoMA Chris Warner, who is the brother,
- 26:33as you well know, we all know, brother of current Secretary of State
- 26:36Mac Warner, and remember Mac is now running for governor. Chris Warner having
- 26:40a campaign announcement of some sort on December of the Is it the eleventh,
- 26:45seventh seventh? I'm well, I wrote, I wrote out of my notes
- 26:48here, but then my brain said, no, wait a minute's the seventh.
- 26:51That's not the only, but anyway, it is the seventh. It's
- 26:52going to be at the Cultural Center in Charleston. Most think Steven. Most
- 26:56think that he's going to use that opportunity talking about Chris Warner to formally announce
- 27:00that he'll be running for the seat that his brother Mac, a Secretary of
- 27:04State your thoughts. Yeah, and you know, full disclosure, we're both
- 27:07veterans of the secretary of State's office, so we know this office very well.
- 27:11I think it's certainly good for Chris, especially having that last name Warner.
- 27:17I do think it could cause some problems down the road in confusion for
- 27:22some voters to some extent in between Mac Warner running for governor and Chris Warner
- 27:26running for Secretary of State. That's a concern I have. The other concern
- 27:30I have two is also making the announcement on December seventh, which is also
- 27:33the same day as the gubernatorial forum the Hobby is hosting with what the West
- 27:37Virginia Metro News, which Patrick mortse he's not taking part in. By the
- 27:40way, that's another story for another time. That's that's exactly right. So
- 27:42I do kind of see kind of taking the thunder away from another person's event.
- 27:48I just think there's going to be some issues going into there. And
- 27:52I'm sure that you know the brothers, they love each other, they'll support
- 27:55each other. And of course Max's already put out a statements saying that he's,
- 27:57you know, as Secretary of State, he's going to be impartial,
- 28:02and we know that he can do that. We've seen that happen. But
- 28:04I do think for voters it may cause some confusion down the road, So
- 28:08we'll see how that works out. But it could work great for Chris just
- 28:11from having that Warner name secretary of State. You know, that could put
- 28:15him above people like Brian Wood or Chris Pritt or others. Yeah, and
- 28:18Chris, of course is no stranger to politics. Former State Republican Party chair
- 28:22felt have very been involved in Republican politics, either in that position or others
- 28:26pretty much his entire life. Probably say, Chris was probably a little bit
- 28:30more politically engaged in what the other Warner family members were because you know,
- 28:36Mack was serving in Afghanistan and elsewhere around around the world for so often.
- 28:41Mani of course, the Mani Warner ran for governor of thousand and four,
- 28:45yeah, case and the other and their late brother. Even Mac's wife,
- 28:49Debbie currently serves in the House. But I think you know, she's announced
- 28:52that she's not going to run for reelection. That's a lot of warners.
- 28:56It's a lot of warners. And as you already know, she's not going
- 29:00to run, and they are going all in, and of course Mac has
- 29:03been behind on some of the polls, so we've started to see Mac actually
- 29:06come up and some of the more recent polls, so he's kind of slipping
- 29:11into a third place, releasing a top three for the goubernatorial candidates, so
- 29:15with more Capito and Patrick Morrissey. So it's going to be really interesting to
- 29:19see how that race continues to tighten up as we get closer to May.
- 29:23Let's talk about your friend and mine, Governor Jim Justice. The financial woes
- 29:30continue. It seems like, of course we took a little bit of a
- 29:33break for the Thanksgiving holiday, but before that we get word that there's insurance
- 29:37companies that have issues with the governor and the lack of Bill Payne, and
- 29:44there's other companies as well. Talk about that. Yeah, I mean again,
- 29:48and you mentioned this at the top of the show or top of our
- 29:52conversation, that there's just no touching Jim Justice on these issues. Nothing is
- 29:59sticking to him, and we shouldn't be that surprised by this. Some of
- 30:03these issues came out in twenty sixteen when he was running as a Democrat,
- 30:04by his Democratic opponents didn't touch him. Then this stuff was brought out in
- 30:08twenty twenty. You know, by Woody Thrasher in a Republican primary. Didn't
- 30:14touch him then, and it's not going to touch him now unless outside of
- 30:17a federal indictment or something like that. Now he's got baby dog, which
- 30:19he didn't always have. That's true. He didn't have baby dog. You're
- 30:22right. Baby dog wasn't even on the campaign trail yet in twenty twenty.
- 30:26That's so. Do you think he's not going to be rolling that dog out
- 30:29there now? Of course he is, Oh yeah, on the throne for
- 30:32sure. So yeah, I mean the governor. You've seen him in person,
- 30:36You've seen him on the campaign trail. He's very personable, he tells
- 30:37great story. He is a good retail politician. Whether you love him or
- 30:41hate him. Folksy, he is folksy, but he will keep your attention.
- 30:45He'll even make you laugh. He don't like him, and that goes
- 30:48a long way. And you know, the stuff just isn't touching him.
- 30:52What do you think about you know, I guess he was asked her in
- 30:53a briefing last week and you were you're of course taking part in that when
- 30:59whether or not he would continue to coach girls basketball at Greenbrier East, and
- 31:03he didn't say he wasn't going to do it. If he's elected Senate,
- 31:06he plans to fly back, you know. I mean, that's kind of
- 31:08where I that's kind of what I took from it. You were there,
- 31:11your take. I don't think he's going he may say that. I think
- 31:15he's going to be in for a culture shock when he gets to the US
- 31:18Senate, much the way Joe Manchin was, because if you remember in the
- 31:21early days, Joe Manchin had some issues in the beginning and ultimately grew to
- 31:25hate it. He said this famously said the Senate sucks quote. That's his
- 31:29quote, not mine. And I think Justice is going to have the same
- 31:32culture shock for just how much work you have to do. I mean,
- 31:37if you're there, you're there every day. It's not like driving once a
- 31:40week from Louisbourg from your house to the governor's office to do a briefing and
- 31:45drive back. It's different. It's way different. You're going to be there
- 31:48every day taking part in votes, and you got to go to the floor
- 31:52and do that. And you're just another person there too. I mean,
- 31:55you're I mean, and that's what kind of because you know, the governor.
- 31:57And I don't mean this in a negative, Stephen, but the governor
- 32:00loves to be the center of attention. He's certainly not the only politician that's
- 32:04that way, but he loves to be the center of attention. And I
- 32:07don't know that being among all those other people and all those other bombastic personalities
- 32:12on both the right and the left. I mean, you know, he's
- 32:15not gonna be the center of attention there. No, he's gonna be is
- 32:19initially. I think he's gonna have a very hard time, I think,
- 32:22And we'll see how he acclimates to it and if he can somehow swing coaching
- 32:27basketball. Man. I mean, okay, I guess he's for now.
- 32:30He has the money to fly back and forth. He might not have the
- 32:34money to fly back and forth. I was talking to a friend of mine
- 32:36this morning who follows politics closely, and he said, can you imagine what
- 32:39it's going to be when the Washington Post picks that up. I mean,
- 32:43they've already in a lot of these publications from the Wall Street Journal and down
- 32:45have already commented on the governor's financial issues. But when they if indeed he
- 32:51does try to coach, and they get a hold of that. I mean
- 32:54they're going to be because he because he's going in as a Republican, some
- 32:58of the more liberal publications are going to be looking for things anyway. You
- 33:01imagine what that headline is going to look like. He is already under such
- 33:05a microscope right now. And of course, you know, some of us
- 33:08have been writing these stories for a long time, but the national media outlets
- 33:13are going to be all over him the closer we get. And he needs
- 33:16in once he's in, so he needs to be prepared for that and you
- 33:21know, get your house in order if he can. That way, maybe
- 33:22you don't have to have as many as he's headlines. But Dave Allen Chilling

- 38:05not. I'm not. I'm not. I'm not a needle gay. How
- 38:07was your Thanksgiving, sir? It was great as always. My kids were
- 38:09home, one from college, the other from working in South Florida, and
- 38:14it's always a great holiday. And started putting those lights out and went to
- 38:19the ballpark over the weekend, partakes of some of er what it's amazing.
- 38:24It's amazing, and so I want to see the revenue numbers at the end
- 38:29of the season. Though, yeah, right, it's going to be pretty
- 38:30sweet. It is. It is indeed, Mike. Since last time we
- 38:34talked, the field has gotten smaller on the Republican side in the race for
- 38:37Attorney General, State Senator Ryan Weld announcing last week he will not run for
- 38:42a g opting instead to run for re election to State Senate. As of
- 38:45now, the Republican side is going to be you and current senator, our
- 38:49current state auditor. I should say, JB. McCuskey, square enough,
- 38:52let's start with Ryan Weld. He's out your thoughts. Well, I told
- 38:55you it was going to be out what three four weeks ago? I said
- 38:59it was a two man race. But I have a lot of respect for
- 39:01Ryan Weld. Listen, he served our country in the military. He's been
- 39:06almost eight years in the State Senate. He's worked awfully hard, and so
- 39:09I have a lot of respect for him. I thought, I still believe
- 39:13I'm the better candidate to be attorney general, but I didn't run for attorney
- 39:16general because he didn't like Ryan Weild. We disagreed on position issues. I
- 39:21do believe that the choice between Ryan Weld and JB. McCuskey was the difference
- 39:24between BlackBerry pie and BlackBerry cobbler. I still believe that I don't know if
- 39:30the cobbler or the pie dropped out, but we're left with BlackBerry something.
- 39:36But I respect Ryan Weld a great deal and best wishes to him and his
- 39:40race first state Senate. So how do you see the battle with the current
- 39:44state auditor JB. Mccusky shaping out? I think it's Stuart myself who has
- 39:49a big record. It's almost twenty five years practicing law at the highest levels,
- 39:53a big record as US attorney prosecuted two Supreme Court justices, took enough
- 40:00off the street to kill more than forty million people, versus someone who frankly
- 40:05hasn't practiced law in more than eight years, somebody who has taken in tens
- 40:10of thousands of dollars from liberal Democrat personal injury attorneys. And where was the
- 40:15state auditor during all this misspending of COVID dollars that happened all across West Virginia.
- 40:22We just saw where from an education standpoint, Upshore County Schools, Loking
- 40:27County Schools been taken over by the state because of incredibly outrageous spending things for
- 40:35like pool passes and park purchases and food and other crazy things. What was
- 40:42the State Auditor to put together was something called a COVID committee to advise local
- 40:46and state governments in terms of proper spending of COVID dollars our money. And
- 40:52it turns out all that was completely misspent, tens of millions of dollars that
- 40:57were on the hook for. And so I'd like to here from the State
- 41:00Auditor exactly what happened and why it happened. And it's just not education spending
- 41:05where we know there's tens of millions of dollars. What about all that PPP
- 41:07spending? What about all that unemployment front? Who's track and who's watching the
- 41:14chicken coop here? And somebody ought to be making sure all that money was
- 41:17spent correctly or that there's accountability from miss spending. Are you worried, Mike
- 41:24that a tough and ugly, nasty battle between you and JB may do harm
- 41:30to the Republican Party. I don't think so. Listen. I'm not going
- 41:32to campaign on anything that's not the record, and so I think it's fair
- 41:37when you're looking at two different candidates running for an office, you need to
- 41:39look at the record. Folks are really busy, families are working hard every
- 41:45day, just to get their kids through school. The record matters. Here's
- 41:49what I can tell you is that if you're a listener to this show right
- 41:52now, you're going to hear from candidate after candidate after candidate that says I'm
- 41:57the conservative. Well, the record may say nothing close to being conservative.
- 42:02I think it matters. People need to know the record. Part of my
- 42:06job, especially when personal injury attorneys are funding up my opponent either because they
- 42:13definitely don't want Steward because I'm going to be an aggressive I'm gonna be a
- 42:16tough minded prosecutor style attorney general, going after CPS, going after fraud and
- 42:25corruption. That's just my record. That's what I've done. I have a
- 42:30proven record. But you're gonna hear folks come forward to say, hey,
- 42:32I'm a conservative. I'm a conservative, and the record doesn't prove it at
- 42:37all. Part of my job, when I'm outfunded as much as I'm gonna
- 42:40be outfunded in this race, is to let voters know the difference between me
- 42:45and my opponent. I'm a real conservative. My record shows it proves it
- 42:51seven days a week. My opponent not even close, not even close.
- 42:55He's voted four times against concealed carry in the Second Amendment four times. He
- 43:01voted against religious freedom when that was on the ballot. He's not endorsed President
- 43:07Trump in a state we're over eighty percent of our people Democrat and Republican support
- 43:12President Trump versus what we have happening today. So part of my job,
- 43:17I think, as a candidate is to let folks know there is a clear
- 43:21distinct choice somebody with a real record as a proven lawyer and somebody who hasn't
- 43:27even practiced law for a really, really long time. Give you a story
- 43:30about JB. And I love Jbau like I've saying this. He's a good
- 43:35young guy. Used to work for me at a different law firm, and
- 43:37we were headed somewhere in twenty sixteen. I was the coach of the Trump
- 43:42campaign at the time. He was running for state auditor. I thought he
- 43:45was gonna win, and we're headed to Huntington and I just said, hey,
- 43:49JB, have you ever balanced your checkbook before? And he said no,
- 43:52why? And I said, well, it doesn't matter. Just when
- 43:57you win that seat, turn on the light, sit down in the chair,
- 44:00and surrounding yourself with good people. And he's done that. He surrounded
- 44:04himself with some really good people in that office. I just fundamentally disagree from
- 44:08the standpoint of some of his positions on various issues. I'll tell you this.
- 44:14He had a bill last session. It was thirty three to one in
- 44:16the state Senate. Just to show you my backbone, I was the one.
- 44:20I was the one that voted against everybody in the state. So that
- 44:23bill, this bill was to take the State Auditor's Office from transparency to obscurity.
- 44:30It was to exclude and exempt the State Auditor's Office from the purchasing division
- 44:35requirements in West Virginia. It just didn't make sense to me. I used
- 44:38common sense for a lot of my analysis on things. I don't have advisors
- 44:43telling me what to do. It's just common sense. And when you're taking
- 44:46the state offics from transparency to obscurity not following the purchasing division requirements, it
- 44:54just doesn't make sense to me. I think that if the purchasing division requirements
- 44:59don't work, we need to look at the purchasing division requirements and modify them
- 45:02or fix them so they do work. But the idea of exempting departments from
- 45:07being included in state requirements from the purchasing division. It just doesn't make sense.
- 45:14It doesn't pass the smell test. And of all departments, of all
- 45:17offices, the state Auditor being excluded from complying with purchasing division requirements. It
- 45:23just makes no sense. That office ought to be one hundred percent about transparency.
- 45:29That's what it ought to be, from soup to nuts, transparency,
- 45:31transparency, transparency. I'm going to look into the crystal ball here before we
- 45:36wrap it up, and that is that whoever the next attorney general, as
- 45:39I said to West Virginia, there's all likelihood that they're going to be looking
- 45:44into what happened on the West side with this gas situation. I'm not trying
- 45:46to politicize it. I'm just saying it is what it is, is that
- 45:50there's going to be heads are going to roll with West Virginia, American Water.
- 45:54You know, the amount of gas has done a great job as far
- 45:58as being out there in front of people, but there's gonna be a lot
- 46:00of investigations into this. This is something that you have said that the next
- 46:04attorney general is going to be looking into. I tend to agree with you
- 46:07on that. Why does it concern you if it's JBM. Oh my goodness,
- 46:10How in the world can you be a referee if you're assigned to one
- 46:14team, if you work for that team. What I mean by this is
- 46:16he's taken tens of thousands of dollars from Democrat personal injury attorneys, the same
- 46:22folks running advertisements saying we want to sue, we want to sue, call
- 46:24us if you've eaten fast food. On top of that, we've got folks
- 46:29on the West side going through a tremendous challenge, two utility companies that are
- 46:34undoubtedly going to end up at the PSC. Who runs the PS? JV's
- 46:38godmother. So between the personal injury attorneys and between who runs the PSC,
- 46:45how in the world can you be a neutral arbiter. I think we need
- 46:47an Attorney General that will be tough in terms of dealing with the PSC and
- 46:52issues that affect people's pocketbooks. The challenge with JV when it comes to the
- 46:59issue on the West Side, it crystallizes perfectly the problem with JB becoming the
- 47:04Attorney general. It's a Schmorgas board of conflict of interests. How in the
- 47:08world could you do it? How do you do it when you've got conflicts
- 47:13from personal injury attorneys that are flooding your campaign with cash, and you've got
- 47:17relatives, very very close relatives running the PSC. In addition, you've got
- 47:22huge utilities. These are massive issues that are going to affect folks. I
- 47:27can tell you this. My record has proven those two Supreme Court justices,
- 47:31one Republican, one Democrat, and I didn't care. I was going to
- 47:36prosecute where the corruption was found. That's exactly what we did as Attorney General.
- 47:42I'm going to be the same neutral arbiter. I'm going to be fair
- 47:45with one champion that I'm working for. That's the people of us one hundred
- 47:49percent of the time, regardless of who it may make mad or may make
- 47:53uncomfortable. Mike Stewart's candidate for Attorney General, current state senator, we got
- 47:58to go. I appreciate you being here as always. Man, thanks a
