Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: On March 24th, 1947, Lux Radio Theater presented its 564th broadcast, Smokey.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Adapted from the 1946 20th Century Fox film, itself drawn
- 0:13Speaker 1: from Will James' novel Smokey, The Cow Horse, it stars
- 0:17Speaker 1: Joel McCrea and Constance Moore. McCrea plays Clint Barkley, a
- 0:22Speaker 1: solitary cowboy who comes to the Rocking R Ranch in
- 0:26Speaker 1: Utah country and takes on the patient work of gaining
- 0:29Speaker 1: the trust of a wild horse named Smokey. As ranch
- 0:33Speaker 1: owner Julie Richards and the ranch hands wonder about Clint's
- 0:37Speaker 1: guarded past, the relationship between cowboy and horse moves to
- 0:41Speaker 1: the center of the story. We now take you back
- 0:45Speaker 1: to the original broadcast. Follow Lux Radio Theater for more
- 0:49Speaker 1: classic broadcasts.
- 0:59Speaker 2: The Radio Theater, starring Joel McRae and Constance Moore in Smokey.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, Mr. William Keeley.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Some 20 years ago, Will James, one of the West's
- 1:22Speaker 4: great writers, got out of the saddle long enough to
- 1:25Speaker 4: pen a simple yet thrilling story.
- 1:28Speaker 3: About a horse.
- 1:29Speaker 4: As a result from the rough and tumble country of
- 1:32Speaker 4: cattle stampedes and gun-toting cowboys comes Smokey, an epic saga
- 1:38Speaker 4: that has gone through many editions and been translated around
- 1:42Speaker 4: the world. Tonight we bring you 20th Century Fox's great
- 1:46Speaker 4: screen version of that story. And our stars are Joel
- 1:49Speaker 4: McRae and the lovely Constance Moore.
- 1:53Speaker 3: The only character missing from.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Our cast, that is, so far as personal appearance goes,
- 1:58Speaker 4: is Smokey himself. But I'm sure you can visualize a
- 2:02Speaker 4: sealed brown stallion, sleek and spirited, his black mane flying
- 2:07Speaker 4: against the blazing red, soft blues and yellows of the
- 2:10Speaker 4: Utah Rangers. And I can't imagine a better man to
- 2:14Speaker 4: gentle him, as the phrase goes, than Joel McRae. On
- 2:19Speaker 4: to our play, Act One of Smokey. starring Joel McRae
- 2:23Speaker 4: as Barclay and Constance Moore as Julie.
- 2:27Speaker 5: As our theater lights are lowered.
- 2:29Speaker 4: The curtain rises on Clint Barclay.
- 2:43Speaker 5: I remember the first time I ever saw Smokey.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I was traveling then, getting as far as I could
- 2:48Speaker 2: from Texas, but heading no place in particular.
- 2:51Speaker 5: I reined in when I saw this herd of horses
- 2:53Speaker 5: in the valley. Cowhands were bringing them.
- 2:56Speaker 2: In from winter pasture, except Smokey had no intention of
- 2:59Speaker 2: being brought in. Suddenly he cut loose from the rest
- 3:02Speaker 2: of the herd and made for the canyon. The men
- 3:04Speaker 2: tried to head him off, but Smokey was too smart
- 3:06Speaker 2: for them.
- 3:06Speaker 5: And too fast. I guess maybe it was kind of
- 3:09Speaker 5: foolish of me to feel the way I did because.
- 3:12Speaker 2: The horse wasn't mine, but when I saw him proud
- 3:15Speaker 2: and wild, I, well, I knew he was for me.
- 3:19Speaker 5: And so I went after him. A few hours later,
- 3:22Speaker 5: at the rocking our ranch.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Well, there's the herd, Judy.
- 3:28Speaker 6: Well, they seem to be in pretty good shape. Going
- 3:30Speaker 6: to be a job getting those drunks ready for the
- 3:32Speaker 6: market by the first of the month. Oh, fine talk
- 3:35Speaker 6: for a gal who knocked Indians off the tailgate of
- 3:37Speaker 6: a covered wagon. Did I say I was worried? About
- 3:40Speaker 6: time you brought those horses in, Jeff. Some foreman you are.
- 3:44Speaker 3: You're worth taking time with, Miss Richards. How do they look,
- 3:47Speaker 3: Miss Julie?
- 3:48Speaker 2: Fine.
- 3:48Speaker 6: Have any trouble with them?
- 3:49Speaker 2: Oh, they're a little skittish, but they're bound to be
- 3:51Speaker 2: out running wild for so long.
- 3:53Speaker 6: What about that few brown stallions? Did you bring him
- 3:56Speaker 6: in this time?
- 3:57Speaker 3: No, ma'am.
- 3:58Speaker 6: Outsmarted you again. Looks like I'll have to bring.
- 4:01Speaker 5: Him in myself.
- 4:03Speaker 3: He's all yours, Miss Richard. I'll bet you two.
- 4:05Speaker 6: Wait a minute. What's that over the rise there?
- 4:07Speaker 3: What? Why, it's him. The stallion.
- 4:10Speaker 6: Somebody's driving him in. Who's that rider?
- 4:12Speaker 5: He got me, miss.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Not one of our boys.
- 4:15Speaker 6: Sure made a monkey out of you. Whoever he is.
- 4:18Speaker 6: How'd he find the stallion?
- 4:19Speaker 3: I don't know. Willie! Yeah, Jeff? That fella coming in.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Tell him we want to see him. Now! Afternoon.
- 4:29Speaker 6: Nice work, young fella, bringing in that stallion.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I hope he's worth the trouble, you two.
- 4:33Speaker 5: He sure looks good to me.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Make a fine saddle horse if he's broke right. Oh, uh,
- 4:38Speaker 2: you the owner of the rocking arm, ma'am?
- 4:40Speaker 6: No, I am not the boss.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Just bossy.
- 4:43Speaker 6: Outfit belongs to my granddaughter here. What'd you say your
- 4:46Speaker 6: name is?
- 4:47Speaker 5: Clint Barkley.
- 4:48Speaker 6: Well, meet the boss.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Mr. Barkley? Miss Richards.
- 4:51Speaker 5: How do you do, Miss Richards?
- 4:52Speaker 3: Hello.
- 4:54Speaker 5: I heard you were hiring some extra wranglers.
- 4:56Speaker 6: Oh, well, I was thinking about it, but I don't
- 4:59Speaker 6: believe I mentioned it yet.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Must have been your thinking I heard then.
- 5:02Speaker 6: Maybe we could use an extra man. How about it, Jeff? Oh,
- 5:06Speaker 6: this is Mr. Hicks, our foreman.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Where have you been working, Barclay?
- 5:10Speaker 3: Texas, Arizona, New Mexico? I mean, what else?
- 5:13Speaker 5: Most all of them, one time or another.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Oh, don't like one spot for long, huh? Depends on
- 5:18Speaker 2: the spot. Some I like, some I don't.
- 5:21Speaker 5: This place, I think I like.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Can you break a horse?
- 5:23Speaker 5: I think so.
- 5:24Speaker 6: There's 30 broncs in that corral. It'll have to have
- 5:26Speaker 6: the rough edges off of them by the first of
- 5:28Speaker 6: the month. Think you could handle, say, half of them?
- 5:31Speaker 5: I'd sure like to try.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Okay, Jeff?
- 5:33Speaker 5: Okay.
- 5:34Speaker 2: That's the bunkhouse over there, Barclay. I'll give you orders later.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 5:38Speaker 5: And thank you, Mr.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Richard.
- 5:41Speaker 6: What's the matter, Jeff? Don't you like him?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Oh, I'd just like to know a little something about
- 5:47Speaker 2: the men we hire, Miss Julie. When a man doesn't
- 5:49Speaker 2: want to give some reference, there might be something he's
- 5:52Speaker 2: trying to hide.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Well, there's room.
- 5:54Speaker 6: Enough around here to hide it. Come on, Graham. Let's
- 5:57Speaker 6: go see what we've really got in that corral.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Hey, you new man's sure a worker, Jeff. That's six
- 6:09Speaker 2: broncies stopped today.
- 6:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:11Speaker 5: Doing all right, Willie. I wonder what's made them drift
- 6:14Speaker 5: around so much.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Oh, some of us just can't stay put.
- 6:17Speaker 3: We're like flies. Yeah. Hey, look. It's going to work
- 6:21Speaker 3: out that stallion.
- 6:22Speaker 5: Well, there's something I want to see.
- 6:23Speaker 3: You going to saddle him in the chute, Cleve? No,
- 6:27Speaker 3: we don't want to rush this one.
- 6:28Speaker 5: I don't think I'll even try to ride him today.
- 6:30Speaker 3: He'll be plenty salty when you do get to him. Well,
- 6:32Speaker 3: here goes.
- 6:33Speaker 5: I'll get a rope on him first.
- 6:36Speaker 3: Take it easy. Take it easy, Johnny. Nobody's going to
- 6:38Speaker 3: hurt you.
- 6:39Speaker 5: You're not going to like this, but it's got to
- 6:41Speaker 5: be done.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Hang on to that rope, Clint. Hang on. Yeah, I'm
- 6:43Speaker 3: trying to. Boy, Kid Farley, he'll kill you. Put your
- 6:46Speaker 3: rope on that stubborn hose. He won't give me. That's it.
- 6:48Speaker 6: Give it another turn.
- 6:49Speaker 3: All right. Now fight. Go on. Get it out of
- 6:52Speaker 3: your system. Look at him.
- 6:53Speaker 8: Easy, boy.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Easy now.
- 6:56Speaker 5: You sure got your eye on me, haven't you?
- 6:59Speaker 3: That's good.
- 7:00Speaker 5: The more you watch, the more you'll see of me,
- 7:02Speaker 5: and the more you'll learn.
- 7:04Speaker 6: What's going on there?
- 7:05Speaker 5: He's working on the renegade, miss.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Come on, Willie. Now, we got work to do.
- 7:08Speaker 5: You better keep back. You better keep back, Miss Richards.
- 7:11Speaker 3: This fellow's not very polite yet.
- 7:12Speaker 6: Oh, I'm used to horses, thanks.
- 7:14Speaker 5: Yeah, but he's not used to humans. He don't know
- 7:16Speaker 5: quite what to make of it.
- 7:17Speaker 6: Oh, bad one, huh?
- 7:18Speaker 2: No, not bad. He's just got a mind of his own.
- 7:21Speaker 2: It's going to take plenty of time with him.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Why?
- 7:24Speaker 6: Think maybe he'll bring a better price than the others?
- 7:26Speaker 5: Well, you're not going to sell them with that bunch
- 7:28Speaker 5: of crows, are you?
- 7:29Speaker 6: Decide that when the time comes. After all, that's our business,
- 7:32Speaker 6: selling horses.
- 7:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, but this one's in a class by himself.
- 7:35Speaker 6: Well, what would you suggest, Mr.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Barclay?
- 7:38Speaker 2: Keep him here on the ranch. He'll make one of
- 7:39Speaker 2: the finest cowhorses in the country if we break.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Him, right?
- 7:42Speaker 6: Well, incidentally, you'd enjoy doing that, wouldn't you?
- 7:45Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am.
- 7:46Speaker 6: Well, right now I think you've got your hands full
- 7:48Speaker 6: breaking in the others. Suppose you turn him loose.
- 7:50Speaker 2: You're the boss, miss. But you better get out of
- 7:52Speaker 2: the corral before I do.
- 7:54Speaker 6: I told you, I'm used to horses.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:57Speaker 9: Get off!
- 8:00Speaker 3: Well, I warned you, miss. You all right?
- 8:02Speaker 6: Yes, I'm fine.
- 8:05Speaker 5: I never saw a man or a girl climb a
- 8:06Speaker 5: corral fence as fast as.
- 8:08Speaker 3: You just did.
- 8:09Speaker 6: What a horse!
- 8:10Speaker 3: Yeah, what a horse.
- 8:18Speaker 2: I worked on the horse every spare moment I had.
- 8:20Speaker 2: In a week or so, he calmed down enough for
- 8:22Speaker 2: me to get him halter broke. And so that day,
- 8:25Speaker 2: I led him beyond the soft pasture, down by a stream.
- 8:31Speaker 5: I'm leaving you here for a while, Smokey. I'm tying
- 8:34Speaker 5: you up. You've got plenty of grass and plenty of
- 8:36Speaker 5: water and plenty of time to think things over. Just remember,
- 8:39Speaker 5: the better you treat this rope, the better it's going
- 8:42Speaker 5: to treat you.
- 8:43Speaker 3: I'll see you later.
- 8:47Speaker 2: And then we're playing cards in the bunkhouse when I
- 8:54Speaker 2: got back. Willie the cook was singing some song about burritos.
- 8:59Speaker 4: All wrapped in white linen.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Wrapped in white.
- 9:05Speaker 10: Linen and cold as the clay.
- 9:09Speaker 2: He said, beat the drums slowly and play.
- 9:14Speaker 3: The pipe slowly. Play the dead.
- 9:17Speaker 10: March as you carry me along. Take me out of Laredo,
- 9:24Speaker 10: then lay the saddle on me. For I'm a young
- 9:29Speaker 10: cowboy and I know I've.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Fine, Willie. Willie, if you could only cook as good
- 9:38Speaker 3: as you can sing. Ain't that right, Clint?
- 9:39Speaker 2: You're sure a bird with that guitar, Willie.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Well, thanks, Clint.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Say, you ever been in Laredo, Clint?
- 9:47Speaker 5: No, I never have. I thought you said you worked
- 9:50Speaker 5: in Texas, Barkley.
- 9:52Speaker 3: I did.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Well, Laredo's the center of the cow business down there,
- 9:55Speaker 5: isn't it? Yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Won't you?
- 9:57Speaker 3: Your deal. Didn't you like Texas?
- 10:00Speaker 5: Oh, I liked it all right. Then why didn't you leave? Well,
- 10:03Speaker 5: I just thought maybe I'd like it better up here.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Want to sit in the game, Clint? No, thanks.
- 10:07Speaker 5: I'm going out to do a little work.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Ambitious, ain't he?
- 10:11Speaker 5: Working on Sunday.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Well, he's as jumpy as one of them blots he's
- 10:13Speaker 2: been abusting. A man's bound to be a little jumpy
- 10:16Speaker 2: when he's hiding something.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Maybe.
- 10:19Speaker 11: Or maybe he's just tending to his own business like
- 10:21Speaker 11: a lot of us ain't.
- 10:23Speaker 3: His hat was broke back and his purse was a-jingling.
- 10:26Speaker 3: And as he approached, he was singing a.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Song.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Julie here, Miss Richards. What's the matter?
- 10:34Speaker 6: I thought you was playing cards.
- 10:36Speaker 5: I just want to talk to her for a minute.
- 10:37Speaker 6: Can't you even have her Sunday to herself? She was
- 10:40Speaker 6: fixing to go swimming. You want to see me, Jeff?
- 10:42Speaker 3: Oh, yes, I, uh.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Miss Julie, as long as I work for your father,
- 10:47Speaker 2: he never had any complaints about the way I.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Manage his ranch.
- 10:50Speaker 6: Well, have I ever complained?
- 10:52Speaker 5: No, ma'am. What about this fellow Barkley? Figure on keeping
- 10:56Speaker 5: him here after he gets through those Bronx?
- 10:58Speaker 6: He seems to know his job.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Yes, he does. He's a good hand. But you know,
- 11:04Speaker 2: Miss Julie, news has a way of getting around.
- 11:07Speaker 6: Especially if it's bad.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I was talking to a couple of boys in town yesterday,
- 11:11Speaker 2: and near as I can figure it out, Barkley was
- 11:15Speaker 2: mixed up in a pretty nasty scrape down in Texas.
- 11:17Speaker 6: Some folks would look for a rattlesnake.
- 11:20Speaker 5: In a bunch of us.
- 11:21Speaker 6: What sort of a scrape, Chester?
- 11:23Speaker 5: Some money disappeared, a lot of money.
- 11:24Speaker 6: I don't believe it.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Well, the boys wouldn't have any reason but just saying that, Mrs. Richards.
- 11:28Speaker 6: Well, what does Brockley have to say about it?
- 11:31Speaker 5: I keep trying to edge it out of him, but
- 11:33Speaker 5: he's always clamming up.
- 11:34Speaker 6: That fellow's no jailbird. And suppose he is. Why, there
- 11:38Speaker 6: ain't a cowhand on this ranch that hasn't wound up
- 11:40Speaker 6: at least one Saturday night in jail. And how do
- 11:43Speaker 6: you suppose your father got his start, Julie? Graham. Well,
- 11:46Speaker 6: he just didn't come by that string of horses he
- 11:48Speaker 6: swapped for this ranch. Are you trying to say Dad
- 11:51Speaker 6: sold those horses?
- 11:52Speaker 3: Well, no.
- 11:53Speaker 6: No, but he sure got them awful cheap. Excuse me.
- 11:58Speaker 6: Both of you, I'm going swimming.
- 12:03Speaker 5: All right, all right. I know you've got pretty legs.
- 12:06Speaker 5: You don't have to show them off to me.
- 12:09Speaker 6: When the.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I guess you don't like school.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Much, honey.
- 12:12Speaker 5: There are a lot of things more important than kicking
- 12:14Speaker 5: up your heels and having a good time. One thing
- 12:18Speaker 5: you have to learn is how to get along.
- 12:20Speaker 3: With people, see?
- 12:21Speaker 5: You understand?
- 12:23Speaker 3: Sure you do.
- 12:24Speaker 5: You haven't got this bump of knowledge for nothing.
- 12:26Speaker 6: Hello.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Oh, Miss Richards. Hello.
- 12:29Speaker 6: For a moment, I didn't know it was a horse
- 12:31Speaker 6: you were talking to.
- 12:33Speaker 5: Kind of looks like Smokey and I are trespassing on
- 12:35Speaker 5: the swimming hole.
- 12:36Speaker 6: Smokey?
- 12:37Speaker 5: Oh, I hope you don't mind my naming him Smokey.
- 12:39Speaker 5: I just figured that, well, where there's smoke, there's fire,
- 12:42Speaker 5: and you've got to admit he's got plenty of fire.
- 12:44Speaker 6: Oh, it's a good name for him. I see you're
- 12:46Speaker 6: still coddling him.
- 12:47Speaker 5: Yeah, but on my own time. You know, today's Sunday.
- 12:50Speaker 6: You think he's something pretty special.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Don't you? You bet.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Don't you?
- 12:54Speaker 5: Ah, Smokey's always been something special.
- 12:57Speaker 6: I used to catch glimpses of him when I was
- 12:59Speaker 6: out riding. He was an adventurous little cuss, even when
- 13:01Speaker 6: he was a yearling. He's wild, though, Clint. Completely wild.
- 13:04Speaker 5: Oh, you get over that.
- 13:06Speaker 6: Hello, Smokey. Hiya, boy.
- 13:09Speaker 5: I'm afraid he hasn't developed much of a sociable streak yet.
- 13:13Speaker 6: It's amazing how much you two have in common.
- 13:16Speaker 5: How do you mean?
- 13:16Speaker 6: Listen, from what I hear, you're not very sociable yourself.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I guess just doing my job as a wrangler isn't
- 13:22Speaker 2: enough for Jeff.
- 13:24Speaker 6: Jeff's just looking after my interests. Look, I don't like
- 13:27Speaker 6: to say this, but he's heard some ugly rumors about you.
- 13:30Speaker 5: Oh? If he believes them, I guess that means I'm through, huh?
- 13:34Speaker 6: Not necessarily. A little explanation would clear up everything.
- 13:38Speaker 5: But it isn't as easy as that.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Certain things you can never explain to some people, and
- 13:43Speaker 2: the few who would understand don't need an explanation.
- 13:47Speaker 6: I'll buy that.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 13:49Speaker 6: But if my curiosity ever gets the better of me,
- 13:52Speaker 6: I'm going to ask Smokey.
- 13:53Speaker 3: See you later.
- 13:55Speaker 5: Sure has got three legs. Oh, shut up, Smokey. I
- 14:00Speaker 5: don't have to talk about you all the time, do I?
- 14:01Speaker 7: Hey, Buck.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Well, hello, young fella. Where'd you come from? Off the road.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I'm looking for somebody named Clint Barkley.
- 14:23Speaker 3: What, a friend of his? Yeah, yeah, a friend of his. Well,
- 14:27Speaker 3: they told me in town that he was... He's in
- 14:29Speaker 3: the blacksmith shop, I think. Okay, thanks, bud. You're welcome, bud.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Jim Crackhorn and I don't care.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Jim Crackhorn and I don't care.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Jim Crackhorn and I don't care.
- 14:40Speaker 8: Oh, my sister's gone away.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Hiya, Clint. Frank. Hey. You're a hard man to find.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Maybe you didn't look hard enough. You could have found
- 14:58Speaker 2: me at the Laredo jail. That's where I've been the
- 15:00Speaker 2: last eight months.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I just heard about that last week. I heard
- 15:05Speaker 2: you'd been in jail. You sure that's the first you
- 15:07Speaker 2: heard of it?
- 15:08Speaker 3: Sure, naturally.
- 15:08Speaker 2: If I'd known before, I'd have come on back and told.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Them what really happened. Yeah.
- 15:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I know you would, Frank.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Well, anyhow, I.
- 15:15Speaker 2: I want to thank you for what you did for me.
- 15:17Speaker 2: What I did for you? Well, at least you didn't
- 15:19Speaker 2: squeal on me. If I had, nobody would believe me. Yeah,
- 15:23Speaker 2: I guess you're in a pretty tough spot at that. Well,
- 15:25Speaker 2: I sure wish I'd known before. You didn't come here
- 15:27Speaker 2: to tell me that. What did you come for? Well, Clint,
- 15:31Speaker 2: I need a job. I was just thinking that maybe
- 15:34Speaker 2: you'd put in a good word for me around here.
- 15:37Speaker 5: I wouldn't put in a good word for you again
- 15:39Speaker 5: if you never got a job.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Now, get out of here. Oh, Clint, now... You know
- 15:43Speaker 3: how I am.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Every time I get a job, I just seem to
- 15:47Speaker 2: get into some kind of trouble.
- 15:48Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I've been thinking that if, well, you know, if I
- 15:53Speaker 2: could work along with you, you'd sort of keep an
- 15:55Speaker 2: eye on me, keep me in line. I know you're sorry, Anthony.
- 16:00Speaker 2: I don't blame you. But I'd sure appreciate another chance. Well, Clinton,
- 16:04Speaker 2: if you won't help me, who will?
- 16:06Speaker 3: All right.
- 16:07Speaker 2: But look, I like my job here, see? I like
- 16:11Speaker 2: it better than any job I ever had before.
- 16:13Speaker 3: And if you start anything... No, no, no, Clint. I
- 16:15Speaker 3: promise I won't. I'll do everything you tell me to do. Morning, Clint. Morning. Hi, Baldy. Hi.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Hey, don't blame you for liking it here, Clint. I've
- 16:33Speaker 2: only been here two days, but... Sure is a good outfit.
- 16:36Speaker 5: Okay, now get to work.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Well, Foreman sent me to watch you. He said I
- 16:39Speaker 2: might learn something.
- 16:40Speaker 5: I doubt it. Smokey might learn something. I might learn something.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Oh, come on, Clint. Hey, you're saddling the bronc, huh?
- 16:48Speaker 3: That's right.
- 16:48Speaker 2: You want me to hear him down while you put
- 16:50Speaker 2: the saddle on?
- 16:51Speaker 5: I'll saddle him.
- 16:51Speaker 2: I don't think he's going to be much trouble. Well,
- 16:53Speaker 2: how about when you get on that dog? He's liable
- 16:55Speaker 2: not to like it. You better stand back, Frank.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Well, sure. Okay, okay.
- 16:59Speaker 5: All right, Smokey. Easy, boy.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Easy now. Easy.
- 17:05Speaker 5: That's the way I used to bake horses, Frank.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Easy. One step at a time.
- 17:09Speaker 2: That's the difference between us, Baldy. You don't believe in shortcuts.
- 17:13Speaker 3: I do.
- 17:13Speaker 5: Yeah, you would. That's a boy. Now, easy, Smokey. This
- 17:20Speaker 5: isn't going to hurt you. Now, it's just a saddle, see?
- 17:23Speaker 7: Go on, smell it.
- 17:26Speaker 3: That's it.
- 17:27Speaker 5: That's a boy.
- 17:29Speaker 3: Here we go now. That's the stuff.
- 17:32Speaker 5: That didn't scare you now, did it?
- 17:35Speaker 3: Okay.
- 17:36Speaker 5: We'll tighten the cinch. How's that, huh? Too tight? Easy, Smokey.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Easy. Two bucks and he gets killed, Frank. What is that?
- 17:46Speaker 3: No business, Wally. I'm no sucker. Stand back, you guys. Yep.
- 18:02Speaker 2: A couple of days later, I rode Smokey out of
- 18:04Speaker 2: the corral. A cow pony isn't a pleasure, or if
- 18:07Speaker 2: he's a workhorse and he's got.
- 18:08Speaker 5: To learn how to work. Once he's saddle-wise, the first
- 18:11Speaker 5: thing you teach him.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Is neck-raining so that he'll turn with the slightest pressure.
- 18:15Speaker 2: And he's got to get used to things. To the
- 18:17Speaker 2: man on his back. To a coyote hiding in the grass.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Or a chipmunk scooting across the trail right under his nose. Well,
- 18:25Speaker 2: we worked together on my own time before sunup or
- 18:27Speaker 2: a dusk. And Smokey caught on fast. He'd gotten used
- 18:31Speaker 2: to the rope sailing around his head. But when I
- 18:34Speaker 2: shot it past him and cut that bush, it was
- 18:36Speaker 2: another story.
- 18:37Speaker 5: Come on now. That's just a little old bush, Smokey.
- 18:46Speaker 3: You're not going to be scared of that, are you? Oh, now. Whoa, Smokey. Whoa. Whoa.
- 18:56Speaker 2: I brought the bush in for him to see so
- 18:58Speaker 2: that he'd know that no matter what was on the
- 19:00Speaker 2: other end of the rope, why it wouldn't hurt him.
- 19:02Speaker 5: Then he had to learn the feel of the weight
- 19:04Speaker 5: on the rope.
- 19:04Speaker 2: He had to get wise to the sudden shift of
- 19:06Speaker 2: the saddle when the weight pulls hard on the horn
- 19:08Speaker 2: and jerks against his withers. Later that day, I roped
- 19:12Speaker 2: Smokey's first cast.
- 19:13Speaker 9: Oh, son.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Oh, boy.
- 19:17Speaker 5: Oh, now back.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Back.
- 19:22Speaker 5: That's better. That's it. Yeah. That's all right, Smokey.
- 19:29Speaker 3: That's good. Good.
- 19:36Speaker 5: He learned fast.
- 19:37Speaker 2: And what he learned, he never forgot. And I was
- 19:40Speaker 2: mighty proud of him. He wouldn't make a liar out
- 19:43Speaker 2: of me, not Smokey. Best cow pony in the country,
- 19:46Speaker 2: I told Julie.
- 19:47Speaker 5: And that's just what he was turning.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Out to be.
- 19:50Speaker 8: Be.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Well, our teacher's set today, Clint. He's doing all right, Willie.
- 20:02Speaker 3: He's doing fine.
- 20:03Speaker 5: I'll let him cool off here in the corral.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Well, he ought to do all right the way you've
- 20:07Speaker 3: been nursing him along.
- 20:08Speaker 5: Yeah, well, it's worth it, Willie. He really catches on
- 20:11Speaker 5: to things.
- 20:11Speaker 3: He's just kidding you, Clint.
- 20:13Speaker 2: First chance he gets, you'll go a-high-tailing it right back.
- 20:15Speaker 3: To them hills.
- 20:16Speaker 5: I'm not going to give him the chance. Hey, sure,
- 20:18Speaker 5: he's a pretty little rascal, isn't he? Look at him
- 20:21Speaker 5: nuzzling you.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Why, this son of a gun, he likes you. Yeah.
- 20:26Speaker 3: You got those broncs ready here, Bosley?
- 20:27Speaker 5: Yeah, they're all over there in the other corral.
- 20:29Speaker 2: And what about him, Smoky?
- 20:31Speaker 5: He doesn't go, Jeff. Why not? Well, isn't Miss Richards
- 20:34Speaker 5: keeping him here on the ranch? She didn't say anything
- 20:37Speaker 5: about it to me.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Run him in with the others, Frank. Sure, Jeff, sure.
- 20:41Speaker 5: Now, look, Jeff.
- 20:42Speaker 2: That horse will be worth a lot more to you
- 20:43Speaker 2: here than the price you could get for him. Well,
- 20:46Speaker 2: if he's as good as you've been saying, we ought
- 20:48Speaker 2: to get plenty.
- 20:49Speaker 5: Well, anyway, you can't send him out with the others.
- 20:51Speaker 5: He's not ready yet.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Not ready? No.
- 20:54Speaker 5: Well, you've been riding him, haven't you?
- 20:56Speaker 3: Get him out, Frank. You're not getting sentimental over a horse,
- 20:59Speaker 3: are you, Clitter? All right, nuthead. Outside. You heard me move.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Look out, Frank. Smokey, stop it. Oh, boy. I can
- 21:09Speaker 3: handle him. Yeah, I just saw you try it.
- 21:10Speaker 5: I told you he wasn't ready.
- 21:11Speaker 3: I'll ready him. I'll throw him right on his back.
- 21:13Speaker 5: You let that horse alone.
- 21:14Speaker 3: I said not hit the killer. I said let him alone. Okay, Quint.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Don't have to get sore about it. Wish I was
- 21:23Speaker 2: breaking him, though.
- 21:24Speaker 3: Now, look, Barkley.
- 21:25Speaker 2: I don't know what you're trying to do with that stallion,
- 21:27Speaker 2: but you take the fight out of him or I'll
- 21:29Speaker 2: turn him back to the hills where he belongs.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Okay, Jeff. Sure.
- 21:34Speaker 5: Smokey'd have his chance to prove his stuff when we
- 21:42Speaker 5: went out on the cattle roundup. We'd be gone for days.
- 21:45Speaker 5: And if Jeff wasn't satisfied.
- 21:47Speaker 2: By the time we'd get back, I'd be willing to
- 21:49Speaker 2: turn Smokey back to the hills. I was that sure
- 21:52Speaker 2: of him. I wish I was only half as sure
- 21:55Speaker 2: of Frank. Frank, who told me that all he wanted
- 21:58Speaker 2: was just one more chance.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Boy, Clint, just look at it. Mmm, what a herd.
- 22:06Speaker 5: Yeah, we'll have a work cut out for us for
- 22:07Speaker 5: the next week or so.
- 22:08Speaker 2: No, I wasn't thinking of the work. Yeah, there's over
- 22:11Speaker 2: a thousand heads there. Boy, if they can sell cattle
- 22:14Speaker 2: for today, I'd settle for a.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Couple of hundred.
- 22:16Speaker 5: One more crack like that and I'll... What's the matter, Clint?
- 22:20Speaker 3: Don't you know when I'm kidding? I guess I don't.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Just remember, Frank, you're punching cattle here, not selling them.
- 22:26Speaker 5: Oh.
- 22:38Speaker 4: In a moment, we'll continue with the second act of Smokey,
- 22:41Speaker 4: starring Joel McRae and Constance Moore.
- 22:46Speaker 7: Many eyes watch the graceful ships sail into the harbor,
- 22:49Speaker 7: including the eyes of espionage agents who watch and report.
- 22:53Speaker 7: In every world port, they watch the cargo ships and
- 22:55Speaker 7: military vessels. Agents find it easy to watch the harbors.
- 22:59Speaker 7: A more difficult job is to gather classified information. This
- 23:03Speaker 7: is almost impossible unless someone turns traitor. Someone gets careless
- 23:07Speaker 7: or there's loose talk. The outcome of wars and the
- 23:10Speaker 7: course of world history has changed because people, who should
- 23:13Speaker 7: have known better, talked.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Now, here's Mr. Keeley at the microphone. We continue with
- 23:18Speaker 4: Act II of Smokey, starring Joel McRae as Clinton Barclay
- 23:22Speaker 4: and Constance Moore as Julie.
- 23:35Speaker 5: Well, we were still out on the range rounding up
- 23:37Speaker 5: the cattle.
- 23:37Speaker 2: And one morning, right after breakfast, Jeff Hicks, the foreman,
- 23:41Speaker 2: called me over. Okay, Barkley, we've got to get out
- 23:45Speaker 2: to the streets this morning. You better ride over to
- 23:47Speaker 2: Box Canyon. And, Willie, you do the same on Rock Ridge.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Take Frank with you.
- 23:51Speaker 3: You can... Hey, wait a minute, Bobby. What horse are
- 23:54Speaker 3: you riding?
- 23:54Speaker 5: The one I'm on, Smokey. Trust him so well, ain't you?
- 23:58Speaker 5: He's earned a chance, Jeff.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Okay, maybe he has.
- 24:00Speaker 2: If he does a day's work on those strays, maybe
- 24:03Speaker 2: we'll keep him at the right chapter.
- 24:04Speaker 5: Well, you'll have to take my word for it.
- 24:06Speaker 3: I'll be alone. I'll take your word. Thanks.
- 24:08Speaker 5: What do you say, Smokey?
- 24:09Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 24:16Speaker 2: I guess we were about ten miles out when it happened.
- 24:19Speaker 2: It wasn't Smokey's fault. We'd cornered a stray steer among
- 24:22Speaker 2: the rocks. But instead of staying cornered, he charged us.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Smokey fell, and me with him. I don't know how
- 24:29Speaker 2: long I was unconscious, but when I came to, Smokey
- 24:32Speaker 2: was standing next to me.
- 24:34Speaker 5: Wondering why I didn't get up. Hello, Smokey.
- 24:40Speaker 3: It's all right, boy. It wasn't your fault. I guess I...
- 24:45Speaker 3: I guess I got a few busted ribs.
- 24:47Speaker 5: Better get back to the ranch. Pull up a little boy.
- 24:53Speaker 3: No, no, no use, I guess.
- 24:57Speaker 5: I just can't make the saddle.
- 25:01Speaker 3: I can't get up.
- 25:01Speaker 5: If we can't stay here, they'd never find us here.
- 25:06Speaker 5: Only one thing to do, Smokey.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Just one thing.
- 25:13Speaker 5: If I can get my arm through that stirrup.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Like... Like this.
- 25:20Speaker 5: If I can tie it tight enough with my bandana...
- 25:24Speaker 5: Tight enough for you to drag me.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Maybe we can... Maybe.
- 25:31Speaker 5: It's my only chance, Smokey. It's up to you, boy.
- 25:38Speaker 3: It's up to you.
- 25:39Speaker 5: No!
- 25:45Speaker 3: Ah, five straight for good morning's work, Willie. Wonder how
- 25:49Speaker 3: Clint's doing. I don't know.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Say, Frank, when are you going to pay me that 20.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Bucks you owe me? I told you, Willie, next payday.
- 25:55Speaker 2: The payday's coming, John.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Oh, there'll always be another payday, Willie. Will you quit worrying? Hey, hey, look.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Ain't that Smokey down there? Yeah. Yeah, and he's dragging something. Well,
- 26:05Speaker 3: that's a man. That's Clint he's dragging. Oh, he's thrown him. Well,
- 26:08Speaker 3: that's no good. Horse, give me your rifle.
- 26:10Speaker 6: Take it easy, Willie, and use your eyes.
- 26:12Speaker 3: Clint's tied to the stirrup.
- 26:14Speaker 2: That's his bandana, ain't it?
- 26:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:15Speaker 3: He tied himself to the stirrup. Well, he'll be dragged
- 26:17Speaker 3: to death. What are we standing here for? Smokey's still
- 26:19Speaker 3: half wild.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Chris is the only one he let come near him.
- 26:21Speaker 2: If we ride down on him now, no telling what
- 26:23Speaker 2: that horse will do.
- 26:24Speaker 3: Yeah, but we can't stay here. That's right. We'll follow him.
- 26:27Speaker 3: And quietly. Come on. I hope I can sneak around
- 26:29Speaker 3: and throw a rope on that jughead.
- 26:31Speaker 2: He won't let you get near him.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Nobody else either. I guess so. Oh, how far has
- 26:35Speaker 3: he dragged him already? Quit making me dead now. Yeah, maybe.
- 26:39Speaker 2: I bet your life he will be a gunner if
- 26:40Speaker 2: we don't let Smokey alone, and at least he's heading
- 26:43Speaker 2: toward the ranch.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Yeah, and Clint's hanging on to the right stirrup, too.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Son of a gun.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Any other horse would have kicked his brains out for that.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Look, I'll get the strays back to camp. You follow Clint,
- 26:52Speaker 3: will you? I'll meet you at the stream. There they are,
- 27:02Speaker 3: Miss Julie. In the corral.
- 27:03Speaker 6: That horse is riding him all the way back here. Well,
- 27:05Speaker 6: what are you waiting for? Get his arm free of
- 27:07Speaker 6: that stirrup.
- 27:08Speaker 3: Miss Julie, stay back.
- 27:09Speaker 2: That horse won't let anybody get near him.
- 27:10Speaker 6: But Clint, look.
- 27:12Speaker 3: He's out. Yeah, I know, Miss. He's pretty badly banged up.
- 27:14Speaker 3: He's not feeling it, though.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Been unconscious most of the way, best that we can tell.
- 27:17Speaker 6: Oh, how are we going to get Clint out of
- 27:19Speaker 6: the corral? It's all right, Smokey. It's all right, boy.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Easy, boy, easy. We're not going to hurt you. We're
- 27:25Speaker 3: not going to hurt Clint either. No, sir. Willie.
- 27:28Speaker 6: Willie, you're trampling.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Yeah, he's going to fight anything we can do to
- 27:30Speaker 2: get Clint away.
- 27:31Speaker 3: I'll get him away. He won't fight this.
- 27:33Speaker 6: No, wait a minute. No rifle yet.
- 27:34Speaker 3: No, why not?
- 27:35Speaker 6: Look, he's moving. Clint's moving.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Yeah. Clint.
- 27:39Speaker 6: Clint, can you get your arm loose? Clint, can you
- 27:42Speaker 6: get it out of the stirrup?
- 27:44Speaker 3: Sure. I'll try. He's getting it, miss. Clint.
- 27:49Speaker 6: Clint.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Once more, boy. Just once more and you'll have it.
- 27:51Speaker 6: That's it, Clint. You're loose now. Now, don't try to
- 27:54Speaker 6: move again.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Clint.
- 27:55Speaker 6: Just lie there.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Where is that rope now?
- 27:58Speaker 2: Clint, I'll have to throw this rope around you. I'd
- 28:00Speaker 2: rope the horse, but there's no telling what he'd do.
- 28:02Speaker 3: Come on. Throw it.
- 28:08Speaker 6: Slowly, Willie.
- 28:09Speaker 5: Slowly.
- 28:12Speaker 3: I'm pulling you over to the fence here, Clint. Hey, Frank.
- 28:15Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 28:16Speaker 6: Get around on that other side.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Make out like you're trying to climb into the corral
- 28:19Speaker 2: or something.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Okay.
- 28:21Speaker 5: Easy, Willie.
- 28:21Speaker 6: Easy.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Okay, over here.
- 28:24Speaker 6: That's it, Frank. Smokey's going after you now. He thinks
- 28:27Speaker 6: you're trying to get in.
- 28:27Speaker 3: Well, hurry up, will you, before he puts this corral down.
- 28:30Speaker 3: I got him, Frank.
- 28:31Speaker 6: I got him. Oh, he's unconscious again. He's alive, though.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Okay, Frank.
- 28:35Speaker 6: Close the gate, Willie. Then get Clint up to the house.
- 28:37Speaker 6: Graham's trying to get the doctor now.
- 28:38Speaker 8: He's covered with bruises, miss.
- 28:48Speaker 3: I don't think anything's busted, though, except them ribs. I... I...
- 28:52Speaker 3: Take it easy, Clint. First to breathe, huh, boy?
- 28:55Speaker 6: Keep quiet, Willie.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:57Speaker 6: Please don't try to talk, Clint. Just lie still till
- 29:00Speaker 6: the doctor gets here.
- 29:01Speaker 5: Smokey.
- 29:02Speaker 3: He's all right.
- 29:03Speaker 6: Frank and Scrubby are out there looking after him right now.
- 29:06Speaker 6: Just try not to move, Clint. Try not.
- 29:12Speaker 3: To move. Get in that stall. Dog fronted? I said sit.
- 29:16Speaker 6: Take it easy, will you, Frank?
- 29:18Speaker 3: Take it easy, huh? One man horse just ain't no
- 29:20Speaker 3: horse at all. Get in there and not hit her
- 29:23Speaker 3: or I'll... Frank!
- 29:26Speaker 6: Frank, you all right?
- 29:27Speaker 3: Oh, he bit me. Bit me in the shoulder. Oh,
- 29:30Speaker 3: he won't get away with that, scrubby. Stop him.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Stop him.
- 29:35Speaker 3: He's being quick-wired.
- 29:36Speaker 6: He's coming up. Now leave him alone.
- 29:38Speaker 3: Okay.
- 29:40Speaker 5: Okay.
- 29:41Speaker 3: I'll leave him alone.
- 29:42Speaker 2: But someday, nuthead, somebody's going to teach you manners. And
- 29:46Speaker 2: that somebody might even be me.
- 29:56Speaker 6: Well, how's the patient this morning?
- 29:58Speaker 3: What patient?
- 29:58Speaker 5: I'm getting out of bed this afternoon. Oh, no, you're not.
- 30:01Speaker 6: All right, open up your pajama coat.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Huh? What for?
- 30:05Speaker 6: I'm supposed to re-tape your ribs today.
- 30:07Speaker 5: That's what I was afraid of. Dr.
- 30:08Speaker 6: Jameson can't get out again until next week.
- 30:10Speaker 5: Oh, well, maybe we better just wait until next week then.
- 30:14Speaker 6: Come on now, come on.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Okay. Now what?
- 30:18Speaker 6: Well, first I'll just have to pull off this old
- 30:21Speaker 6: adhesive tape.
- 30:22Speaker 3: Oh, no, no, no.
- 30:22Speaker 5: Don't, don't, don't.
- 30:23Speaker 6: Well, what are you yelling about? I haven't even started yet.
- 30:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I know, but you were going to. Now, look,
- 30:27Speaker 5: I think the best way is to work it off
- 30:30Speaker 5: bit by bit.
- 30:30Speaker 3: See? Like this.
- 30:32Speaker 6: Uh-huh.
- 30:33Speaker 5: See? See, it's coming off all right.
- 30:35Speaker 6: Slowly, huh? Like this?
- 30:37Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's it.
- 30:39Speaker 3: Nice and... No! No!
- 30:43Speaker 6: Oh, now, is that so bad? Would have hurt twice
- 30:46Speaker 6: as much belonging it.
- 30:47Speaker 2: You just killed me, that's all. Well, I'm glad we
- 30:50Speaker 2: don't have to do this again next week.
- 30:52Speaker 3: Hey, what's that? Ether. Oh, great.
- 30:54Speaker 5: First you murder me and then you bring out the ether.
- 30:56Speaker 5: Why didn't you bring out the ether first?
- 30:58Speaker 6: The ether's for your skin, to clean it off.
- 31:01Speaker 5: How do you know there's any skin left?
- 31:03Speaker 6: Come on, you'll have to help me with this. Here,
- 31:05Speaker 6: hold that.
- 31:07Speaker 5: Say, this isn't too bad, is it?
- 31:11Speaker 6: Look, I'm just trying to get this fresh tape around you. Now,
- 31:14Speaker 6: take a deep breath.
- 31:15Speaker 3: Ow. Be careful.
- 31:16Speaker 6: Hold the scissors, please. Come on, sit. Oh, I saw
- 31:20Speaker 6: Smokey today.
- 31:21Speaker 3: You did? How is he? Fine.
- 31:23Speaker 5: Is Frank Denton still working with him?
- 31:25Speaker 3: No.
- 31:28Speaker 6: Oh, well, a blind man could see how you felt
- 31:29Speaker 6: about somebody else handling Smokey, so I pretty much passed you.
- 31:33Speaker 5: Oh.
- 31:34Speaker 6: And then when you're well enough, you can pick up
- 31:35Speaker 6: the screwing right where you left off. Okay?
- 31:37Speaker 5: You bet it's okay, thanks.
- 31:39Speaker 3: Mind it! Good morning, Mrs. Richards.
- 31:41Speaker 6: Did Julie do a good job on those ribs?
- 31:43Speaker 3: She sure did.
- 31:44Speaker 6: Just take a look, Graham.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Oh, dear.
- 31:47Speaker 6: Oh, dear, dear. Julie, I'm ashamed of you. That's no
- 31:51Speaker 6: way to tape a man.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Huh?
- 31:54Speaker 6: Oh, this has got to come off right now.
- 31:56Speaker 3: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. There you.
- 32:00Speaker 6: Go!
- 32:04Speaker 2: My first day out of bed, a man drove in
- 32:06Speaker 2: looking for me, a fellow named Gordon. He owned a
- 32:08Speaker 2: gambling house in town. He asked me to step out
- 32:11Speaker 2: to the bunkhouse for a minute. So you're Clint Barkley, huh? Well,
- 32:16Speaker 2: you're the wrong Clint Barkley, then. What are you driving at, Mr.
- 32:20Speaker 3: Gordon? Oh, just this piece of paper.
- 32:23Speaker 5: It's an IOU for $ 200. Signed, Clint Barkley.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Yeah, except you're not the fellow who gave it to me.
- 32:30Speaker 3: I've had it about a month, so I thought I'd
- 32:32Speaker 3: come up and collect.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Got any ideas who could have signed your name?
- 32:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I might have.
- 32:37Speaker 3: Who is it?
- 32:40Speaker 2: I don't like people signing my name to things. Do
- 32:41Speaker 2: you mind if I hang on to this piece of paper?
- 32:43Speaker 3: What for?
- 32:44Speaker 5: If you let me handle it. Maybe I can get
- 32:46Speaker 5: your money for you.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Well, that's okay. Just so I get it. But if
- 32:50Speaker 3: I don't, I'll be up to see you again. Hi, Clintus.
- 32:55Speaker 3: What's on your mind, boy?
- 32:57Speaker 5: You're the guy that wanted another chance, huh, Frank?
- 32:59Speaker 3: Yeah, what about it?
- 33:00Speaker 5: Just this, this IOU.
- 33:01Speaker 2: You're not getting sore about.
- 33:05Speaker 3: A little thing like that, are you?
- 33:06Speaker 2: A little thing, huh? Signing my name, that's forgery, isn't it?
- 33:10Speaker 2: What did you have in mind? He can't collect from me. Oh,
- 33:12Speaker 2: that's the point, Clint. He can't collect from you, and
- 33:14Speaker 2: he's got nothing on me.
- 33:16Speaker 5: You're no good, Frank, and you never will be.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Now, go draw your pay and get out of here.
- 33:21Speaker 2: You've caused me all the trouble you're going to.
- 33:22Speaker 3: Oh, quit worrying. If that's the way you feel about it,
- 33:24Speaker 3: I'll pay Gordon.
- 33:25Speaker 2: You bet you'll pay him, because I'm driving you to
- 33:27Speaker 2: town right now and see that you do.
- 33:28Speaker 3: Now, go on, pack your things.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Now, just a minute. Maybe I'm not ready to quit
- 33:31Speaker 2: this job. Besides, you can't fire me. You're not the
- 33:34Speaker 2: foreman around here, not yet.
- 33:35Speaker 5: I said go pack your things.
- 33:38Speaker 2: You're making a mistake, Clinton. You wouldn't want me to
- 33:41Speaker 2: tell the boss about you, would you?
- 33:43Speaker 3: Of course I.
- 33:45Speaker 2: I think she's a little stuck on you, but she
- 33:47Speaker 2: might change your mind if she knew you spent quite
- 33:49Speaker 2: a stretch in jail.
- 33:51Speaker 3: She might even... Okay. Okay, Clint. I'll go.
- 34:10Speaker 9: Is that you, Clint?
- 34:12Speaker 3: Willie?
- 34:12Speaker 12: Yeah, I was just putting away the car.
- 34:18Speaker 5: Thanks for letting me use it.
- 34:19Speaker 6: When did you get back from town?
- 34:21Speaker 5: Oh, a half hour ago.
- 34:22Speaker 6: Come on up on the porch. Had your supper?
- 34:24Speaker 5: Yeah, Willie just fixed me a couple of eggs.
- 34:26Speaker 6: You know, Graham is sure you'll move back to the
- 34:28Speaker 6: bunkhouse because you're like Willie's cooking better than hers.
- 34:31Speaker 5: She's wrong about that.
- 34:33Speaker 2: It's just that, well, I appreciate you taking care of
- 34:35Speaker 2: me while I was laid up, but it's time I
- 34:36Speaker 2: started back to work.
- 34:38Speaker 6: Are you sure you're able to?
- 34:39Speaker 3: Oh, I'm fine now.
- 34:40Speaker 2: I stopped in at the doctor's, and he said I
- 34:41Speaker 2: can ride again if I take it easy.
- 34:43Speaker 5: You know, I thought maybe the first thing in the
- 34:45Speaker 5: morning I'd go out and bring in Smokey. How about
- 34:47Speaker 5: you riding along?
- 34:48Speaker 6: Oh, I'd love to. I'll fix up a nice lunch.
- 34:51Speaker 5: Hey, hey, now wait a minute. I'm supposed to be
- 34:53Speaker 5: going back to work.
- 34:54Speaker 6: Well, you still have to eat, don't you?
- 34:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess.
- 34:57Speaker 5: Say, do you suppose maybe we could bring Smokey in
- 35:00Speaker 5: if we rode out tonight?
- 35:01Speaker 6: Oh, now, Clint, look, you can wait till morning. Anyhow,
- 35:04Speaker 6: how do you expect to find a black horse at night?
- 35:06Speaker 5: Well, it'd be fun to try. Go on, change your clothes, huh?
- 35:10Speaker 6: Oh, okay. It won't be long.
- 35:12Speaker 3: Miss Julie! Miss Julie! Oh, Jeff?
- 35:15Speaker 6: What is it?
- 35:15Speaker 5: Scrubby's just come in from the South Meadow, miss.
- 35:18Speaker 3: Some of our prized cattle has been stolen. Stolen?
- 35:20Speaker 6: Oh, now, wait a minute.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Well, I didn't believe it either. Figured they just broke
- 35:22Speaker 2: through the fence, maybe, but... Scrubby saw them.
- 35:25Speaker 5: He rode up just as they were hauling them off
- 35:27Speaker 5: in trucks. Smokey was in the South Pastor, Jeff.
- 35:29Speaker 3: Yeah, they got him too, Clint.
- 35:30Speaker 6: Did Scrubby get a look at them?
- 35:31Speaker 3: Not too good, miss.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Too dark for that, but whoever was in charge, Scrubby
- 35:35Speaker 2: says he sounded just like Frank Denton.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Excuse me, miss. I'm calling the sheriff. Reach the sheriff, Jeff.
- 35:41Speaker 5: Yeah, he's coming right over.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Barkley, what do you know about Frank Denton? Just about everything,
- 35:48Speaker 2: I guess. And you knew he asked me for his
- 35:50Speaker 2: time today?
- 35:51Speaker 5: I told him to.
- 35:52Speaker 6: You told him to? Why?
- 35:54Speaker 5: I had a good reason.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Well, I guess you also had a good reason for
- 35:57Speaker 2: talking me into hiring him.
- 35:58Speaker 3: I thought I did.
- 36:00Speaker 2: You know, Barkley, ever since you've been here, I've watched
- 36:03Speaker 2: you like a hawk. Now, so far, you've been all right.
- 36:06Speaker 2: You haven't slipped once. But what I want to know is,
- 36:09Speaker 2: Where do you fit into this?
- 36:10Speaker 6: Now, now, just a minute, Jeff. You've no right to
- 36:12Speaker 6: accuse Clint. You're not even sure it was Denton. After all,
- 36:16Speaker 6: Scrubby didn't see him. He's just heard a voice.
- 36:18Speaker 5: I'm as sure as Jeff is that it was Denton.
- 36:20Speaker 3: You are? Why?
- 36:21Speaker 2: Because I know him. He's just crazy enough to try
- 36:24Speaker 2: something like this. Well, if that's the case, why did
- 36:26Speaker 2: you recommend him for a job?
- 36:28Speaker 3: Because....
- 36:29Speaker 5: Because he's my brother.
- 36:32Speaker 6: Your brother?
- 36:33Speaker 2: Ever since we were kids, I've covered up for him.
- 36:35Speaker 5: I even went to jail for him. Then he came
- 36:38Speaker 5: here looking for a job. He promised me he wouldn't
- 36:40Speaker 5: make any trouble, and I believed him because, well, he
- 36:43Speaker 5: knew how much this place meant to me. I guess
- 36:46Speaker 5: I made a mistake. You think you might know where
- 36:48Speaker 5: to find him? No, but I'd sure like to try.
- 36:52Speaker 6: Then take the station wagon kit and get started. We'll
- 36:55Speaker 6: follow later on, soon as the sheriff gets here.
- 37:24Speaker 4: We'll return with Act Three of Smokey, starring Joel McRae
- 37:27Speaker 4: and Constance Moore in a moment.
- 37:32Speaker 13: Rumor had it that 20,000 people milled in and around
- 37:35Speaker 13: the White House the day of Andrew Jackson's inauguration. The president,
- 37:39Speaker 13: trying to escape the mob, was exhausted. Retreating, he stood
- 37:43Speaker 13: against the wall of the East Room while friends with
- 37:46Speaker 13: linked arms tried to protect him from the exuberant crowd.
- 37:50Speaker 13: When the people had been lured outside by promises of
- 37:53Speaker 13: lemonade and ice cream, Jackson escaped to a nearby hotel
- 37:57Speaker 13: and went to bed. another page in the White House story.
- 38:01Speaker 3: Mr.
- 38:01Speaker 5: Keeley returns to the microphone.
- 38:03Speaker 4: It's time for the curtain for Act Three of Smokey,
- 38:06Speaker 4: starring Joel McRae as Clint and Constance Moore as Julie.
- 38:11Speaker 8: © BF-WATCH TV 2021.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Months before, when I'd come to the Rocking Hour Ranch,
- 38:24Speaker 2: I'd noticed an abandoned ranch not.
- 38:26Speaker 5: Far from the spot where I'd first seen Smokey.
- 38:28Speaker 2: And as I drove down the road that night looking
- 38:30Speaker 2: for Frank, I knew it would be hard to find
- 38:33Speaker 2: a better spot than that ranch for hiding.
- 38:35Speaker 5: Out stolen cattle.
- 38:36Speaker 2: But it wasn't an easy place to locate at night,
- 38:38Speaker 2: five miles anyway from the highway. And if Frank was there,
- 38:42Speaker 2: it wouldn't be for long. All right, you can't hang
- 38:45Speaker 2: around here, Bart. Soon as you switch brands... We're all finished,
- 38:47Speaker 2: Brandon Denton. Well, then put out the fires. They can
- 38:49Speaker 2: be seen for miles.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Relax. Put out the fires, Charlie.
- 38:52Speaker 5: Get the steers down to the road and back in
- 38:53Speaker 5: the truck.
- 38:54Speaker 3: Your hand, boys. Get going.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Well, as far as I'm concerned, that's it then, Bart.
- 38:59Speaker 2: And our deal was cash on delivery.
- 39:01Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. Here's the money. Thanks.
- 39:03Speaker 5: From now on, it's my responsibility.
- 39:05Speaker 3: Hurry up, boys. Get moving. Hey.
- 39:08Speaker 5: What about that black horse?
- 39:09Speaker 3: What's he still doing in the corral?
- 39:11Speaker 2: Well, that horse isn't for sale, and if it's all
- 39:13Speaker 2: the same to you, I'm going to stick around for
- 39:16Speaker 2: a while and gentle him down.
- 39:17Speaker 5: Not afraid of him, are you?
- 39:19Speaker 3: Uh-uh, not now I'm not. Not the way I got
- 39:21Speaker 3: him roped. Poor horse.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Just got to stand there and take what's coming to us.
- 39:26Speaker 3: Well, I'll see you in a few days. Good thing
- 39:28Speaker 3: we got him on tonight. We'll be out of this
- 39:30Speaker 3: state in no time.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Okay, Smokey. If you're ready, I am. I got plenty
- 39:38Speaker 2: of room this time. No stall where you can back
- 39:41Speaker 2: me into a corner and sink your teeth into me. Ah,
- 39:46Speaker 2: so you want to learn the hard way, huh? Now,
- 39:49Speaker 2: that's good enough for me. Look, here's a cinch. You
- 39:53Speaker 2: see this, knothead? It's a cinch with steel rings, see?
- 39:58Speaker 5: What's it feel like, huh?
- 40:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I sure wish old Finner could see this, Smokey.
- 40:06Speaker 2: I sure wish that he was here.
- 40:13Speaker 3: Finch? Yeah, Jeff?
- 40:15Speaker 5: You all right? They've been here tonight. Your brother and
- 40:18Speaker 5: some others. How do you know?
- 40:20Speaker 2: Sheriff and I just found something here in the corral, Clint.
- 40:24Speaker 2: Used to be a man.
- 40:26Speaker 3: Who is it? Jeff, what have you.
- 40:28Speaker 5: It's him, all right.
- 40:30Speaker 3: Frank. Dead? That's right, Barkley.
- 40:33Speaker 5: Killed by a horse. Near as I can figure from
- 40:36Speaker 5: the cinch belt and the broken ropes. He was beating
- 40:38Speaker 5: the horse. The horse broke the ropes and, well.
- 40:42Speaker 3: Just went crazy, I guess.
- 40:44Speaker 2: Then he must have just jumped the fence and headed
- 40:46Speaker 2: for the hills. Smokey's probably 20 miles away by now. Well,
- 40:51Speaker 2: I guess there's nothing more we can do. I'll go
- 40:54Speaker 2: out on the.
- 40:54Speaker 3: Road, Jeff.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Get Miss Richards to sign a complaint against those fellas
- 40:58Speaker 2: we caught with your cattle.
- 40:59Speaker 5: I'll be back in a little while. I'm going to
- 41:02Speaker 5: look for Smokey, Jeff. Don't you think it'd be better
- 41:04Speaker 5: to forget him after what's happened?
- 41:07Speaker 3: No.
- 41:08Speaker 2: No, they'll say he's a killer now. They'll never believe
- 41:10Speaker 2: he had a reason for doing what he did. That's
- 41:13Speaker 2: why I've got to find him before someone else does.
- 41:15Speaker 3: Sure. Go ahead. I hope you'll find him.
- 41:19Speaker 5: I spent weeks going from rancher to rancher, glad that
- 41:27Speaker 5: no one had caught him yet, but scared to death
- 41:29Speaker 5: that sooner or later someone would find him before I did.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Yeah, mister, I heard tell of that horse. He's somewhere
- 41:36Speaker 2: around this part of the country. Real killer, ain't he?
- 41:40Speaker 5: He was a four-year-old. He stood about 16 hands high.
- 41:43Speaker 3: No, I ain't seen him.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Some boys went out last month and tried to track
- 41:47Speaker 2: him down, but he's too slick for them. He's probably
- 41:51Speaker 2: over in Arizona by now.
- 41:52Speaker 3: Well, thanks.
- 41:53Speaker 5: Thanks anyway.
- 41:59Speaker 3: I tell you, I've seen that horse, Mr. Nelson. I've
- 42:02Speaker 3: seen him not a mile from this very spot.
- 42:04Speaker 11: Now, look, Peters, I own a rodeo, and I'll give $ 1, 000
- 42:06Speaker 11: for such an animal. But I'm beginning to believe there
- 42:09Speaker 11: just ain't no such thing. You'll believe when we catch him.
- 42:12Speaker 11: You're sure going to have the wildest front you've ever.
- 42:15Speaker 3: Seen in a rodeo. I hope you're right. We could use... Hey, look. Look.
- 42:18Speaker 3: Up there on the bluff. It's him.
- 42:19Speaker 6: Hey, hey, there he is.
- 42:21Speaker 3: I didn't know it was him. How do I know
- 42:22Speaker 3: that rope? See, it's still around.
- 42:23Speaker 9: Of his neck when he busted loose.
- 42:25Speaker 6: And killed that guy.
- 42:27Speaker 12: You know, mister, all I know is that that fellow
- 42:34Speaker 12: owns a rodeo, hides some men to go looking for
- 42:36Speaker 12: a horse like that.
- 42:38Speaker 6: Don't know if they ever found him, though.
- 42:39Speaker 5: Well, when will he be back?
- 42:41Speaker 3: Who knows?
- 42:42Speaker 6: So all this snow that wouldn't be coming down this
- 42:44Speaker 6: side of the mountain anyway. It'd head over through the valley.
- 42:47Speaker 6: I probably won't know what happens till next spring.
- 42:51Speaker 9: When the.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Weather keeps up, we'll be.
- 43:02Speaker 6: Snowed under for sure, Julie. There's still a lot of
- 43:04Speaker 6: our cattle out on Pine Ridge. Willie and Scubby brought
- 43:07Speaker 6: in what they could. Almost froze to death doing it.
- 43:10Speaker 6: Weary must have thawed out considerable with all that caterwauling
- 43:14Speaker 6: he was doing. Graham, I'm worried.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Huh?
- 43:18Speaker 6: We have another heavy snowfall. We'll never bring that stock in.
- 43:21Speaker 5: Don't worry. Jeff and I will pick them up the
- 43:23Speaker 5: first thing in the morning.
- 43:24Speaker 6: Graham! Well, hello, stranger.
- 43:26Speaker 3: Hello, Mrs. Richards. Hello, Julie.
- 43:28Speaker 6: My, it's good to have you back. All these weeks,
- 43:31Speaker 6: where have you been?
- 43:32Speaker 3: Everywhere.
- 43:32Speaker 5: Just ran into him riding back from town, Miss Julie.
- 43:35Speaker 6: You find smoking?
- 43:36Speaker 5: No, ma'am, I didn't. Somebody else may have found him, though.
- 43:39Speaker 3: Maybe not. Well.
- 43:41Speaker 6: Take your coat off. Sit down.
- 43:43Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 43:43Speaker 6: You wanted a cup of coffee, didn't you, Jeff?
- 43:47Speaker 5: No, ma'am. I had three cups of supper.
- 43:49Speaker 6: Then the one I'm getting you now will make four.
- 43:51Speaker 3: Come on. Huh? Oh, sure, sure. Hey.
- 43:57Speaker 6: You, uh, had any supper, Clint?
- 43:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I stopped in town on my way here.
- 44:01Speaker 6: Didn't you even find a Tracer, Smokey?
- 44:03Speaker 5: Tracer?
- 44:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Here I followed them into the Antelope Mountains, then into Arizona,
- 44:08Speaker 2: around the Tonto Basin.
- 44:10Speaker 5: They had an early winter down there, and the trails
- 44:12Speaker 5: were all snowed in. I just had to give it up.
- 44:16Speaker 6: I'm sorry, Clint.
- 44:17Speaker 5: Well, one way of looking at it, Smokey's probably got
- 44:21Speaker 5: his freedom again.
- 44:21Speaker 6: Stop kidding yourself. You'll never be happy until you find him.
- 44:26Speaker 5: He saved my life the time he dragged me back
- 44:28Speaker 5: to the ranch. I can't forget that, can I?
- 44:31Speaker 3: No.
- 44:32Speaker 6: No, of course not. Tell him when the trails open
- 44:35Speaker 6: up next spring, you'll want to start looking for him
- 44:37Speaker 6: all over again.
- 44:38Speaker 5: Yes, I guess I will.
- 44:40Speaker 6: Okay, then. You have a job until the middle of March,
- 44:44Speaker 6: and then you're fired.
- 44:45Speaker 3: That's a deal, Julie.
- 44:47Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 44:53Speaker 2: But that March when I started out again to look
- 44:55Speaker 2: for Smokey was the same thing all over.
- 44:57Speaker 5: Reports, rumors, trails that ended nowhere.
- 45:00Speaker 2: But all the while, as I found out long afterward,
- 45:03Speaker 2: Smokey had been captured. That spring, his new owner was Nelson,
- 45:08Speaker 2: the man from the rodeo. That spring in Ogden, Smokey
- 45:11Speaker 2: was packing him into the grandstand. Cougar, they called him.
- 45:15Speaker 5: The world's wildest bucking bronco.
- 45:19Speaker 6: Now, now, ladies and gentlemen, what you've all been waiting for.
- 45:23Speaker 5: Cougar, the wildest bucket of drunk in all the world.
- 45:26Speaker 6: Cougar, the man killer. $ 500 for any rider staying alive.
- 45:31Speaker 5: Flagstaff, Plymouth, Bakersfield, Reno, cities and towns. What I was
- 45:41Speaker 5: searching for in two forests and canyons.
- 45:43Speaker 6: Smoky.
- 45:45Speaker 5: The sweetest cowpony I ever knew.
- 45:47Speaker 2: Was building himself a reputation for being the wildest horse
- 45:50Speaker 2: who ever lived. The cash register jingled and the money
- 45:53Speaker 2: rolled into Nelson's box office. The crowds came and cheered
- 45:56Speaker 2: and Smokey did.
- 45:57Speaker 3: His job as he always had.
- 45:59Speaker 5: Season after season, Nelson grew richer because Smokey.
- 46:02Speaker 3: Had a great heart and a great spirit. But one
- 46:05Speaker 3: day he fell. He was hurt.
- 46:06Speaker 5: Nothing gave way. talking about horses.
- 46:17Speaker 2: He'd once seen this cougar, was at the rodeo in
- 46:21Speaker 2: Cheyenne the night he got hurt. His description of the
- 46:24Speaker 2: horse was enough to take me to Cheyenne for this
- 46:26Speaker 2: man called Milton.
- 46:28Speaker 5: Yes, he had a horse.
- 46:30Speaker 3: Like the one you're talking about, Mr. Barkley, except we
- 46:32Speaker 3: called him Cougar.
- 46:33Speaker 5: Where'd you first get hold of him, Mr. Nelson?
- 46:35Speaker 3: Up in that Red Rock country. You know, he was
- 46:37Speaker 3: the toughest animal I ever had in the show.
- 46:39Speaker 5: That sounds like Smokey, all right. What happened to him
- 46:42Speaker 5: after his accident?
- 46:43Speaker 3: Well, I had to get rid of him, naturally.
- 46:46Speaker 5: What does that mean?
- 46:47Speaker 11: Well, he'd made so much money for me that I
- 46:49Speaker 11: didn't want to shoot him.
- 46:50Speaker 3: I gave him away. Who'd you give him to?
- 46:52Speaker 2: Oh, some old man that runs a riding academy on
- 46:55Speaker 2: Maple Street.
- 46:56Speaker 3: He thought maybe you could fix him up. Gets a
- 46:58Speaker 3: little use out of it.
- 47:00Speaker 5: Seems to me that I'll remember that horse.
- 47:05Speaker 3: Sure it was.
- 47:05Speaker 5: Where'd it go, Andy? No, sealed brown, nearly black. He
- 47:09Speaker 5: got a white star on his forehead and a look
- 47:11Speaker 5: in his eyes. Well, if you'd seen it, you'd remember.
- 47:14Speaker 2: Would you be willing to go as high as $ 100
- 47:18Speaker 2: to get him back?
- 47:19Speaker 5: I'd give a lot more than that.
- 47:20Speaker 3: Where is he? Sure wish I knew.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Ain't very often anybody offers.
- 47:25Speaker 6: Me money like that for one of my horses.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Nelson told me he gave you the horse the last
- 47:29Speaker 2: time his rodeo played here.
- 47:30Speaker 5: Try and remember, will you? Yeah, they come to me,
- 47:33Speaker 5: they all look pretty much alike.
- 47:34Speaker 2: None of them ain't worth much, and when I get
- 47:37Speaker 2: through them, they're worth less. I sell them for what
- 47:39Speaker 2: I can get, mister. For dog food and sometimes for glue.
- 47:43Speaker 2: What kind of a look did you say he had?
- 47:47Speaker 5: If you can't remember, I can't tell you.
- 47:49Speaker 3: Thanks. Thanks anyway.
- 47:58Speaker 2: They were holding Pioneer Days in Cheyenne that week, and
- 48:00Speaker 2: Scrubby and Willie had come along with me.
- 48:02Speaker 3: To see the celebration.
- 48:03Speaker 5: That afternoon, we were standing on the street, watching the parade. Hey,
- 48:08Speaker 5: look at the billboard, Cliff.
- 48:09Speaker 10: The Tornado Rodeo, featuring the world-famous outlaw, greater than the cougar.
- 48:17Speaker 2: As far as I'm concerned, there never was a greater
- 48:20Speaker 2: horse than the smoker.
- 48:21Speaker 6: But we'd only known if this cougar was smoking. Hey, look.
- 48:25Speaker 3: Did you look at that? The junk wagon's joining the parade.
- 48:28Speaker 9: Hey, look at that magnet.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Pull up the rear.
- 48:30Speaker 5: Where'd he come from anyway?
- 48:31Speaker 6: He was standing by that warehouse at the corner.
- 48:33Speaker 3: Who is that junk wagon? I'll teach you to run away.
- 48:40Speaker 3: I'll teach you to run away. Take it easy, mister.
- 48:43Speaker 3: I said take it easy. I'll teach him to run away.
- 48:46Speaker 5: He wouldn't yank on his mouth like that. He just
- 48:48Speaker 5: wanted to get in the parade.
- 48:49Speaker 3: Why don't you mind your own business? As for you, you... Sorry, mister.
- 48:53Speaker 5: You're not using that whip on him either.
- 48:55Speaker 3: You bust that whip and I'll... Use what? Never mind.
- 48:57Speaker 3: I'm going to go on my horse. Sure.
- 49:02Speaker 5: Wouldn't hurt you to feed him once in a while, either.
- 49:05Speaker 3: Come on, get up there. Hey, look at him, Pete.
- 49:07Speaker 5: That old nag.
- 49:08Speaker 2: He's trying to get another look at you.
- 49:11Speaker 6: Looks like you made a Hitler hit.
- 49:13Speaker 3: It's your job, doesn't it?
- 49:14Speaker 9: He said, I'm hungry.
- 49:15Speaker 3: How about it? Let's go get something to eat.
- 49:22Speaker 6: What'll it be, gentlemen?
- 49:23Speaker 5: Hamburger, no oranges, and java.
- 49:25Speaker 3: Same here. A lot of it.
- 49:27Speaker 5: Say, did you notice before that horse, he had a star?
- 49:31Speaker 3: Huh?
- 49:32Speaker 5: That junkie's horse, he had a star on his forehead.
- 49:34Speaker 6: All right, he had a star. What do you have?
- 49:37Speaker 5: Oh, I'll have the same.
- 49:39Speaker 3: What?
- 49:40Speaker 5: You know, there was something about that old horse.
- 49:43Speaker 3: Good.
- 49:43Speaker 6: Hey, where are you going?
- 49:45Speaker 5: Never mind.
- 49:46Speaker 3: I'll see you later at the hotel.
- 49:53Speaker 2: I'm a junk dealer, but I don't know what you're
- 49:54Speaker 2: talking about, brother.
- 49:55Speaker 5: I ain't got no horse with a star, and I
- 49:57Speaker 5: can't tell.
- 49:58Speaker 3: You who he is.
- 49:58Speaker 5: Well, somebody must have him. I saw him today.
- 50:00Speaker 2: He was trying to get into the parade.
- 50:01Speaker 5: Yeah, he said he'd been over at Schultz and Brown's,
- 50:03Speaker 5: and they didn't have him.
- 50:04Speaker 3: And old Lady Barry's got a truck.
- 50:06Speaker 5: And like I said before, I ain't got him, so
- 50:08Speaker 5: I guess I just about dodged him. Well, much obliged, anyway.
- 50:12Speaker 3: Hey, wait a minute, Dirk.
- 50:13Speaker 5: Come to think of it, I did hear of a
- 50:15Speaker 5: new man moving in the.
- 50:16Speaker 3: Other side of Crow Creek.
- 50:17Speaker 5: Where's that?
- 50:18Speaker 3: Any side of town. They said his name was Mingo
- 50:21Speaker 3: or something like that.
- 50:23Speaker 5: Mingo.
- 50:23Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 50:24Speaker 5: Thanks, I'll find him.
- 50:25Speaker 3: Hey, sure looks like rain, don't it?
- 50:27Speaker 8: What do you.
- 50:39Speaker 3: Want? It's late. Ain't open after 7 o'clock. You Mr.
- 50:43Speaker 5: Mingo? I sure had a hard time finding you.
- 50:45Speaker 3: Say, you're the wise guy... What do you want here?
- 50:49Speaker 5: I want to take a look at your horse.
- 50:50Speaker 3: What for?
- 50:51Speaker 5: Well, if he's the one I'm hoping he is, I'd
- 50:52Speaker 5: like to buy him from you. Well, that's different, mister.
- 50:54Speaker 3: I might sell him at that.
- 50:56Speaker 5: Where is he?
- 50:57Speaker 3: Out there in back. Wait a minute. I'll get a.
- 51:05Speaker 5: Lantern. That's him, mister?
- 51:12Speaker 3: That's the horse?
- 51:14Speaker 5: Give me that lantern. Star on his forehead, yes. Look
- 51:19Speaker 5: at him.
- 51:21Speaker 1: No.
- 51:23Speaker 3: Oh, no.
- 51:23Speaker 5: His feet. His eyes.
- 51:30Speaker 6: His eyes.
- 51:32Speaker 3: Smokey.
- 51:34Speaker 5: Smokey.
- 51:37Speaker 3: It's me, Smokey.
- 51:38Speaker 6: It's me.
- 51:50Speaker 5: No, Miss Richards. Clint brought Smokey back last week. I
- 51:53Speaker 5: thought we'd have to shoot him.
- 51:55Speaker 6: Well, he's taking him out of the barn today. Turning
- 51:58Speaker 6: him to the pasture.
- 52:00Speaker 5: Look at him, Jeff. He'll be all right.
- 52:04Speaker 6: Ain't that a picture now? Look at him.
- 52:07Speaker 3: Well, ain't it? Yeah, yeah.
- 52:11Speaker 5: Never seen a man so crazy about a horse in
- 52:13Speaker 5: all my life. Hope we never do again.
- 52:17Speaker 2: Maybe now we'll get some work done around here.
- 52:26Speaker 6: He just doesn't seem to believe he's home, does he, Clint?
- 52:30Speaker 5: Give him a little time, honey. He will.
- 52:32Speaker 6: Go on, Smokey. Why don't you be anxious to get
- 52:35Speaker 6: out the pasture?
- 52:36Speaker 5: Sure, he's anxious. He's waited a long time for this, Julie.
- 52:41Speaker 5: All right, boy.
- 52:42Speaker 3: Go on. There it is.
- 52:46Speaker 5: It's all yours.
- 52:47Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 52:48Speaker 6: Oh, look at him, Clint. He just can't believe it.
- 52:53Speaker 6: He can't believe it.
- 52:55Speaker 5: Go ahead, Smokey. That's it, boy. Go ahead. Well, he
- 53:02Speaker 5: believes it now.
- 53:04Speaker 6: Clint, do you think you'll settle down for a while now?
- 53:09Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, I think I'll settle down. Happy?
- 53:12Speaker 3: Happy.
- 53:13Speaker 5: Awful happy, Julie.
- 53:15Speaker 9: He is home now, home for the same.
- 53:28Speaker 2: He spills his night now.
- 53:34Speaker 5: Contentment his day.
- 53:57Speaker 4: There's a happy postscript to Smokey as our stars appear
- 54:01Speaker 4: in answer to your curtain call. Joel McRae and Constance Moore.
- 54:10Speaker 9: Joel, I don't know anyone.
- 54:11Speaker 4: Better qualified to play a role like Clint Barkley than
- 54:14Speaker 4: you yourself.
- 54:14Speaker 5: Well, Bill, it's true. I just about grew up in
- 54:16Speaker 5: a saddle.
- 54:17Speaker 6: Is that how you first got into pictures, Joel?
- 54:19Speaker 5: Well, in a way, you might say. My first job
- 54:20Speaker 5: was teaching Rudolph Valentino how to ride at four bucks
- 54:23Speaker 5: a day.
- 54:25Speaker 6: Four dollars a day?
- 54:26Speaker 5: Yeah, and I had to supply the horses.
- 54:29Speaker 4: Well, I can imagine that was quite a promising association.
- 54:31Speaker 2: Yes, Rudy introduced me to people like Bill Hart and
- 54:34Speaker 2: Wally Reed, and the first thing I knew, I was
- 54:36Speaker 2: riding in pictures as a double for Greta Garbo.
- 54:39Speaker 6: Oh, come on now, Joe, not Greta Garbo.
- 54:43Speaker 3: That's the truth.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Remember, I was only 18 then, and a wig could
- 54:46Speaker 2: make an awful lot of difference.
- 54:49Speaker 4: And so, from doubling for greater garble, you became a
- 54:51Speaker 4: double for yourself.
- 54:53Speaker 6: Good night.
- 54:53Speaker 3: Good night.
- 54:54Speaker 14: Good night, and our sincerest thanks. This is William Keeley
- 55:02Speaker 14: saying good night to you from Hollywood.
- 55:05Speaker 6: Good night.
