- 0:01Rainy Descartes famously proclaimed the fact that he
- 0:04existed by stating I think, therefore I am.
- 0:10In today's world, however, that method of proving existence is
- 0:14under pressure as we grapple with more subtle possible
- 0:18answers to how we exist, why we exist, and what this entire
- 0:23existence means. If anything, there are
- 0:26scientists who hold that all life has come about purely
- 0:29through various chemical interactions, and that these
- 0:33combinations of elements are simply through the magnitude of
- 0:37time and chances to create our universe and all of our
- 0:42developments of awareness. We are thus, in their view,
- 0:46simply the product of random chance playing out on a
- 0:49universal scale. There are others who look at the
- 0:53existence as some kind of machinery.
- 0:56Some hold that this machinery is governed by a conscious
- 0:59intelligence, or at least was set up by a conscious
- 1:03intelligence which may have in the meantime moved on or even
- 1:08died. More modern theories hold that
- 1:11the world we live and act in is actually something of a hologram
- 1:15or computer simulation, and it is so realistic that while we
- 1:20are immersed in it, we believe it is real and our true
- 1:24existence. In this instance we may be
- 1:27active players who have an existence outside the
- 1:30simulation, or else we may be purely figments of the
- 1:34imagination of whoever the creator and player in this
- 1:38simulation happens to be. Obviously, if we accept any of
- 1:44these theories, we do away with any real and ultimate
- 1:48significance to our lives and our increasing level of
- 1:51self-awareness. And yet there's another side to
- 1:57this debate about the nature and meaning of existence, founded in
- 2:01the very fact of our self-awareness and increases of
- 2:05consciousness which we experience, as well as in the
- 2:08numerous deep and moving experiences that countless
- 2:12individuals have had that become self-evident truths of their
- 2:16existence and of the existence of an overarching consciousness
- 2:21which creates, directs, guides, and supports the manifestation
- 2:28within which we exist. Those who hold this view of
- 2:32reality fall essentially into two camps.
- 2:35The first group looks at the universe as the creation of a
- 2:38Creator, a God who is omniscient, omnipotent,
- 2:43infinite, and eternal. These people tend to treat God
- 2:48as some being external to the universe, but who manages and
- 2:52cares for it. The second group tends to see a
- 2:56universal consciousness, but recognizes that any being who
- 3:00has the qualities of Infinity, omniscience, omnipotence, and
- 3:05eternity must by definition include all of us and the
- 3:10environment within which we live and act within its being, and
- 3:16thus we are one with that pure existence, consciousness.
- 3:21Bliss. Satchit Ananda, of which the
- 3:25universe is constituted, all the names and forms are part and
- 3:30parcel of that aware self-conscious and all conscious
- 3:34being, and the separations between beings and forms are for
- 3:38the purpose of the manifestation, but nevertheless
- 3:42remain one in their essence and inherent consciousness.
- 3:48Srioro Bindu observes. Quote.
- 3:52It is quite obvious that this world is full of suffering and
- 3:55afflicted with transients to a degree that seems to justify the
- 3:58Gita's description of it as this unhappy and transient world a
- 4:04nitya asukam. The question is whether it is a
- 4:08mere creation of chance or governed by a mechanical
- 4:12inconsiant law, or whether there is a meaning in it and something
- 4:17beyond its present appearance towards which we move.
- 4:22If there is a meaning, and if there is something towards which
- 4:25things are evolving, then inevitably there must be a
- 4:29guidance, and that means a supporting consciousness and
- 4:33will is there with which we can come into inner contact.
- 4:38If there is such a consciousness and will, it is not likely that
- 4:42it would stultify itself by annulling the world's meaning or
- 4:46turning it into a perpetual or eventual failure.
