- 0:01Hi everybody, welcome back to the show.
- 0:03This is where we talk about everything that merges
- 0:06technology, entrepreneurship, space and the final frontier.
- 0:10And in today's episode, we're going to explore a fascinating
- 0:14collaboration between fashion and space exploration.
- 0:19Prada, the Italian luxury fashion house, has teamed up
- 0:22with Axiom Space to design lunar space suits for NASA's upcoming
- 0:27Artemis 3 mission. This mission aims to send humans
- 0:30to the moon in 2025 aboard a SpaceX Starship rocket, and this
- 0:36will include the first woman to walk on the lunar surface.
- 0:40Now it seems fashion and space exploration have found common
- 0:43ground. Prada recently announced their
- 0:45partnership with Axiom Space to design spacesuits for NASA's
- 0:49Artemis missions. Now this is going to happen in
- 0:522025 and the mission is historic in many ways.
- 0:55Not only does it mark humanity's return to the moon after more
- 0:59than 50 years, but it also includes plans for new people to
- 1:05step on the moon, including the first woman.
- 1:09Now, Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada's group Marketing director, spoke
- 1:14enthusiastically about the collaboration and according to
- 1:17Bertelli, the ethos of Prada aligned seamlessly with the
- 1:21adventurous spirit required to venture into new realms like
- 1:25space exploration. Now the company intends to
- 1:27leverage its decades long experience and experimentation,
- 1:31cutting edge technology, fabrics and design expertise for this
- 1:36project. Axiom Space, for their part, has
- 1:39been vested with the responsibility of developing
- 1:42space infrastructure from NASA's Artemis 3 mission, and in a
- 1:46statement, Axiom CEO Michael sufred, me plotted Pradas
- 1:51prowess with raw materials and manufacturing techniques as key
- 1:55to creating a comfortable yet functional spacesuit.
- 1:59Now As for the spacesuits themselves, specifics are still
- 2:02under wraps, but indications are there that Prada will build upon
- 2:06a prototype previously released by Axiom.
- 2:09Last year, Axiom secured a $228 million contract to design these
- 2:13suits as part of a larger $1.3 billion package focused on the
- 2:182025 mission. Now these aren't just any
- 2:20spacesuits, they come equipped with joints designed to offer
- 2:24more flexibility than those worn during the Apollo missions.
- 2:28The suits are also expected to feature built in HD cameras,
- 2:32allowing a real time connection back to Earth.
- 2:35The overall aim is to offer astronauts an enhanced ability
- 2:38to explore the lunar surface and conduct scientific
- 2:41experimentation. Now, this isn't the first time a
- 2:44company traditionally focused on fashion has ventured into
- 2:48spacesuit design, though. If you look back to the Apollo
- 2:5111 mission, you'll find that International Latex Corporation,
- 2:55more famous for designing Playtex bras and girdles, was
- 2:59tasked with creating the suits for Neil Armstrong and Buzz
- 3:02Aldrin. Now these suits were complex and
- 3:05very expensive, comprising 21 layers of various materials like
- 3:09synthetics, neoprene rubber, and metalized polyester films, and
- 3:14they cost a staggering $100,000 each.
- 3:18At that time, Neil Armstrong himself no to the effectiveness
- 3:22and reliability of the suit he wore.
- 3:24In a letter to NASA, Armstrong highlighted not just the suits
- 3:28photogenic qualities, but its ability to function flawlessly
- 3:32in the harsh conditions of space.
- 3:34Prada's history with design and technology is more nuanced than
- 3:38one might initially consider. The company's involvement in
- 3:41sailing through the Luna Rasa Challenge for the America's Cup
- 3:45has given them unique insights into material science and high
- 3:49stress engineering. As Lorenzo Botelli, Prada's
- 3:52group's marketing director, highlighted, they're going to
- 3:54transfer that wealth of knowledge to the development of
- 3:57these lunar suits. It's an incredible leap from sea
- 4:00to space, but one that Prada is uniquely positioned to make.
- 4:04And on the flip side, NASA has been pushing the envelope and
- 4:07human space exploration since its inception, and though it's
- 4:11Artemis 3 mission is monumental planning to send the first woman
- 4:15in person of color to the moon, the agency recognizes that suits
- 4:19are critical technology. They've got a history, too, of
- 4:22legacy, of working with unexpected partners.
- 4:25So NASA teaming up with a high fashion brand like Prada isn't
- 4:28as farfeshed as it seems. Axiom Space is the glue that
- 4:33binds these two Titans together. Founded in 2016, the company is
- 4:38in the business of making space accessible not just for
- 4:41astronauts but also to private citizens.
- 4:44And Axiom has its own plans beyond NASA's missions to build
- 4:48a commercial space station. And the suits develop in
- 4:51collaboration with Prada, will find their use not only on the
- 4:54moon but also in future space walks from Axiom's own orbiting
- 4:59platform. It's a multifaceted partnership
- 5:021 where each player brings something irreplaceable to the
- 5:05table. So what's next in this high
- 5:07stakes, high fashion space venture?
- 5:09Axiom Space is not just stopping at designing suits in the US for
- 5:12NASA. The company is also planning to
- 5:14launch the first segment of its commercial space station in
- 5:182026. Now, this move could eventually
- 5:20see the Prada design suits adapted to this new commercial
- 5:24space station for commercial space walks for regular people,
- 5:30pedestrians like you and me. It's clear that the partnership
- 5:33between these two is more than just the static, it's also
- 5:36pushing the boundaries of what's possible between fabrics and
- 5:40fashion and space exploration. And it unites seemingly
- 5:44disparate worlds. Prada and Axiom are charting
- 5:47course for the future, one that promises to be as stylish as it
- 5:51is ambitious. Now, thank you so much for
