- 33:58Speaker 11: Says just the beginning these days, just the beginning.
- 34:06Speaker 8: Crazy, right. What's crazy about this song is it has
- 34:09Speaker 8: a couple of Indian guys on there. Of course Steal
- 34:11Speaker 8: Bengals Sid three Ram, but then you have one of
- 34:15Speaker 8: the greatest rappers ever. That's the main artist Nas right
- 34:20Speaker 8: there hopping on a Steal Bengals track and really one
- 34:24Speaker 8: of my favorite songs, a great one. This one is
- 34:31Speaker 8: a fun collaboration amongst three artists. Krishna Ba Pena Ma Daan.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Director in.

- 37:07Speaker 1: no jump up? I call it even if your number.
- 37:22Speaker 8: Krishna Batcha Fena the Dan. The song is called Vibrate.
- 37:27Speaker 8: It's a great track. It's from Krishna's album and a
- 37:31Speaker 8: great collaboration right there. Now, let's bring in DJ Geet
- 37:35Speaker 8: to the show. Who's going to give you a song
- 37:36Speaker 8: review on one of her favorite hip hop songs in
- 37:39Speaker 8: the moment? What's up? DJ G thank you Sammy?
- 37:43Speaker 27: Okay, So this week, I genuinely could not stop playing
- 37:46Speaker 27: this track like it keeps pulling you back. We are
- 37:50Speaker 27: talking about the title track, also known as Joki, And
- 37:55Speaker 27: what gets me about this one is that it takes
- 37:58Speaker 27: something that feels so familiar, that classical bunjambi folk energy,
- 38:03Speaker 27: but then it hits you with this whole cinematic hip
- 38:06Speaker 27: hop reimagined and you're like, wait, this is something else entirely.
- 38:12Speaker 27: You've got Hanuman kind coming in with that sharp raw
- 38:16Speaker 27: rap energy, Jasmine Soundless bringing that Punjabi fire, and just
- 38:21Speaker 27: with Sauch Dave's production just tying it all together. It's big,
- 38:25Speaker 27: and it's seamless and honestly, that's a vibe of the
- 38:28Speaker 27: whole song.
- 38:29Speaker 2: It doesn't just.
- 38:30Speaker 27: Sound like a typical song from a movie, but it
- 38:33Speaker 27: sounds like a grand entrance. It's like when we're saying
- 38:37Speaker 27: walking into a room and everyone just stops. The rebel
- 38:40Speaker 27: energy is all over. It is a kind of track
- 38:44Speaker 27: that makes you walk a little harder, drive a little faster,
- 38:47Speaker 27: and dance more like you're the main character in your
- 38:50Speaker 27: own action sequence.
- 38:52Speaker 2: When you hear the song again, you'll see what I mean.
- 38:55Speaker 8: Back to you, Sammy, get read.
- 39:01Speaker 2: I'm a king, but I bother my sake.
- 39:03Speaker 17: They come me are bad man.
- 39:04Speaker 1: That's a good dam.
- 39:05Speaker 7: I'm gonna say, just wing back when another man swing.
- 39:07Speaker 7: So I made my mama cry when they made your
- 39:09Speaker 7: heads round.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Got to forgive me.
- 39:11Speaker 20: I can't forgive them.
- 39:12Speaker 6: You know my history, you know what I hear them,
- 39:15Speaker 6: what I do now all hours heavy use the head.
- 39:17Speaker 2: It's a blessing and a curse.
- 39:45Speaker 17: You joke up.
- 40:11Speaker 8: On the show with me, How are you?
- 40:12Speaker 20: Brother?
- 40:16Speaker 8: We've been covering the South Asian hip hop space, the
- 40:21Speaker 8: evolution of it, and today's show have been really focused
- 40:24Speaker 8: on putting a spotlight on it. E and I wanted
- 40:27Speaker 8: to talk to you today about the following. How far
- 40:31Speaker 8: and this is the perfect person to talk to you
- 40:33Speaker 8: about this. How far are we right now from where
- 40:37Speaker 8: the American industry once was in its prime? How far
- 40:41Speaker 8: is the South Asian industry from that moment? What still
- 40:45Speaker 8: needs to happen for us as the South Asian hip
- 40:49Speaker 8: hop industry to catch up with what was the American
- 40:52Speaker 8: mainstream hip hop industry?
- 40:55Speaker 2: Yeah, we're light years of the way.
- 40:57Speaker 8: Brother, Okay, why why you say that?
- 41:03Speaker 4: Not that I disagree, because all right, there's one song
- 41:08Speaker 4: that made it big and everyone knows what it is.
- 41:11Speaker 4: You go to any hood in America, they'll be able
- 41:14Speaker 4: to sing the song. And if benjubbmcs Beware of the
- 41:18Speaker 4: Boys or you know, Mondanto, but as everyone knows, and
- 41:23Speaker 4: it's because that song is so it has so much
- 41:27Speaker 4: dissy flavor in it. There's a there's a lot of
- 41:30Speaker 4: components right that comes to like crossing over mainstream today. Like,
- 41:33Speaker 4: first off, no Punjabi artists can can cross over barring
- 41:38Speaker 4: everybody else having bars, No one's gonna understand it, right,
- 41:41Speaker 4: So a guy like Wrap Sapara, who I mean, I
- 41:44Speaker 4: don't listen to his music but I understand the aesthetic
- 41:46Speaker 4: he's going for. He's not going mainstream because he doesn't
- 41:49Speaker 4: have the hooks. He has the looks, but he doesn't
- 41:52Speaker 4: have the hooks. You know, his music is not infectious, right,
- 41:57Speaker 4: people want feel good music. That's what pop culture is.
- 41:59Speaker 4: That it's at the height I think graduation, right, somebody
- 42:03Speaker 4: can make an album that's basically graduation stadium level where
- 42:08Speaker 4: it's a hook that people can semi understand or just
- 42:12Speaker 4: so infectious that it doesn't matter what the language is.
- 42:15Speaker 4: So in that category, we're talking super pop, right, We're
- 42:18Speaker 4: talking like like even K pop, right. I think one
- 42:20Speaker 4: of that movie that came up, k Pop Demon Hunters
- 42:24Speaker 4: that it's a Korean movie, Korean like whatever. I mean,
- 42:27Speaker 4: they did dub it in English, but that number one
- 42:29Speaker 4: song from there's a soota pop songs, yeah, and again English.
- 42:33Speaker 8: So you're optimistic, I'm not interesting. So okay. So that's
- 42:39Speaker 8: in the context of are you saying this in the
- 42:42Speaker 8: context of joining the American industry or are you talking
- 42:47Speaker 8: about it from the perspective of the evolution or the
- 42:51Speaker 8: maturation of the Indian or the South Asian industry in
- 42:55Speaker 8: its own context? What are you talking about there.
- 42:58Speaker 4: I'm saying, like across over event, like to have some
- 43:01Speaker 4: white girl from the middle of like Phantamonica listening to
- 43:04Speaker 4: this like Punjabi.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Music is light years away.
- 43:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it's again, it's just too much. It's just too
- 43:13Speaker 4: much packaging that again they see there no offense. It
- 43:17Speaker 4: is dumb, man, They're just so like they just don't
- 43:19Speaker 4: get it. Uh, And I don't think that they are
- 43:24Speaker 4: are showing any signs of getting it either.
- 43:26Speaker 13: And so again light years.
- 43:28Speaker 4: Away before you know, Jessica and in uh in which
- 43:35Speaker 4: Malibu is listening to some Punjabbi artists, they might be
- 43:39Speaker 4: listening to bad Buddy.
- 43:40Speaker 8: Yeah you know right now. No, of course not got it,
- 43:46Speaker 8: got it.
- 43:46Speaker 24: No.
- 43:47Speaker 8: I was just curious because you know, we we're seeing
- 43:50Speaker 8: that a little bit in terms of social media where
- 43:52Speaker 8: people are posting, but I'm still questioning whether they're actually
- 43:55Speaker 8: listening to it, you know, and that's the thing we
- 43:57Speaker 8: gotta we gotta get them there.
- 44:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I think again, it's just again I've been talking
- 44:03Speaker 4: about this, the Punjubbi music messiah, the one that's gonna
- 44:07Speaker 4: like just have all the perfect things going for them
- 44:10Speaker 4: to be the perfect crossover body.
- 44:13Speaker 8: It's just Uh, we're just far off.
- 44:15Speaker 4: Because you know what, this is my biggest hot take.
- 44:18Speaker 4: I don't think any of these like like Bunjubbi speaking
- 44:21Speaker 4: artists truly understand how to use Punjubbi in that way
- 44:25Speaker 4: to create the most infectious hooks. Right, Punjabi the tonal language.
- 44:29Speaker 4: You can massage and stretch and do a lot of
- 44:32Speaker 4: things with the with the language, and so you should
- 44:35Speaker 4: be able to just make a hook that sounds like wow.
- 44:38Speaker 4: But instead it's always very like folk drenched or like,
- 44:43Speaker 4: you know, it's just it doesn't it doesn't like catch
- 44:46Speaker 4: you in that way. You know, there's no there's there's just.
- 44:50Speaker 8: It's just not there.
- 44:51Speaker 4: Man.
- 44:52Speaker 8: Wow.
- 44:52Speaker 4: Okay, I read an essay on this topic.
- 44:54Speaker 8: Yeah, well no, no, no, it sounds like, well I
- 44:56Speaker 8: hear that, and I hear the approach in terms of
- 44:58Speaker 8: your thought, and you know, A note it because I
- 45:03Speaker 8: think that there are so many obstacles there for the
- 45:05Speaker 8: South Asian artists, especially in the context of the global landscape.
- 45:09Speaker 8: They have to overcome so much and language and is
- 45:13Speaker 8: a big, big hurdle. And we're seeing that there are
- 45:16Speaker 8: some artists obviously out there, the aforementioned dil Jit and
- 45:20Speaker 8: so many others that are certainly taking a shot at
- 45:23Speaker 8: it for sure, and it's they're the ones that are
- 45:25Speaker 8: on the front lines of it in terms of them
- 45:27Speaker 8: introducing the sound to so many people. But is there
- 45:29Speaker 8: gonna be the next kid or the next kid after
- 45:31Speaker 8: that remains to be seen And where is that kid?
- 45:34Speaker 8: We don't see him right now.
- 45:35Speaker 4: And so yeah, I mean like unless you go to
- 45:37Speaker 4: K pop row and you basically like manufacture a group
- 45:41Speaker 4: or a bunch of girls or whatever's happening, it's possible,
- 45:48Speaker 4: but like it's gonna it's at that point like you're
- 45:51Speaker 4: just faking everything. It's not going to be genuine. It's
- 45:53Speaker 4: just to say you got it done, to get it
- 45:55Speaker 4: done type thing. So that's why it's just like in
- 45:57Speaker 4: a very real way that that has that rustic feel
- 46:01Speaker 4: like I think the only person who ever really is
- 46:03Speaker 4: going to do it and is the king of this
- 46:05Speaker 4: is Punjab. There's nobody else.
- 46:09Speaker 8: Wow, shout out to Raj and Uh Punjab is a
- 46:13Speaker 8: legend around here for sure. Great hanging out with you, brother,
- 46:18Speaker 8: Thank you. All right, here's the next song for you guys.
- 46:21Speaker 2: But yeah, we're a knuckle shanan.

- 51:41Speaker 6: up there. Only thing I'm making this up back with
- 51:43Speaker 6: emotious screww Yeah, fay gonna ren out the goodies stuff
- 51:47Speaker 6: there in is how the HOODI now we turned that
- 51:48Speaker 6: at your buggy. Yeah it's food. I used to fight
- 51:51Speaker 6: the bullies.
- 51:52Speaker 15: No, I fight it with the law.
- 51:53Speaker 2: I guess something's don't leave it fully. The chime pushed
- 51:56Speaker 2: it in the chime pulled me back out when.
- 51:58Speaker 8: Our budge if the morning time. And then look at
- 52:01Speaker 8: that Hollywood using hip hop as its main title song. Yeah,
- 52:07Speaker 8: we thought the day was coming back. In nineteen ninety
- 52:10Speaker 8: six when I started a record company called Ruckus Avenue.
- 52:13Speaker 8: A few years later, I was in a hip hop
- 52:15Speaker 8: group called Kharmacy. We weren't trying to invent a genre.
- 52:19Speaker 8: We were just trying to make music that sounded like us.
- 52:22Speaker 8: And looking back at it thirty years later, I realized
- 52:25Speaker 8: there were artists doing the same thing all over the diaspora,
- 52:29Speaker 8: quietly separately, with no name for what we were building.
- 52:33Speaker 8: Today's show was for them. For the diaspora pioneers who
- 52:37Speaker 8: walked so a generation could run, for the Hippunjabi artists
- 52:42Speaker 8: who took regional music and turned it into a global juggernaut.
- 52:45Speaker 8: And for the mainland Indian rappers like Divine Christiana see
- 52:48Speaker 8: them all emc STAN anyway, But I mean, there's so
- 52:52Speaker 8: many names who are making music as good as anyone
- 52:55Speaker 8: on the earth and still waiting for the world's permission
- 52:57Speaker 8: to come along these scenes, this one movement, and what
- 53:01Speaker 8: I want you to understand walking away from this hour
- 53:04Speaker 8: is that this isn't three competing histories. It's one history
- 53:09Speaker 8: with three chapters. The diaspora built the room, the Punjabi
- 53:14Speaker 8: wave filled it. The mainland scene is the next one
- 53:17Speaker 8: through the door. We are going to keep telling that
- 53:20Speaker 8: story on this show every single day until the rest
- 53:24Speaker 8: of the world catches up. Tomorrow, we ask the harshest
- 53:27Speaker 8: question of all, what's actually stopping the music from crossing
- 53:31Speaker 8: over to the mainstream the western radio. I do have
- 53:35Speaker 8: some answers, and I'll share them with you. In the meantime,
- 53:38Speaker 8: I'll leave you with this track. It's an old song
- 53:41Speaker 8: that I did with my old group called Kharmasy and
- 53:44Speaker 8: we started the very first of the Indian hip hop space.
- 53:48Speaker 8: This song is called music. Nos have a great day, everybody.
- 53:51Speaker 13: A lot of times I'll run to music when I'm
- 53:53Speaker 13: running from lights. He music. It takes my madicine and
- 53:55Speaker 13: makes it all right.
- 53:56Speaker 24: This shows me the lights, sits me down and gives
- 53:58Speaker 24: me advice, lets me know the people been there before,
- 54:01Speaker 24: and then you're all right. And I confessed to sometimes
- 54:03Speaker 24: I can't deal with distress and having music in my life, yo,
- 54:06Speaker 24: I feel blessed. Expressing most emotions ain't the easiest task,
- 54:09Speaker 24: and usually music knows someone that already has and music
- 54:12Speaker 24: knows where I'm at, and music knows how it goes
- 54:14Speaker 24: because music's been there for other people to spend in
- 54:16Speaker 24: the same foat. Music's been every religion, Music's been with
- 54:19Speaker 24: every girl.
- 54:20Speaker 13: Music's been to every.
- 54:21Speaker 11: Corner but the world.
- 54:22Speaker 24: Music's absorbed every emotion that's ever been expressed by that
- 54:25Speaker 24: organ on the left side of mankind ess. That's why
- 54:28Speaker 24: I confide in music whenever my life's a mess, because
- 54:30Speaker 24: music's endured every single one of life's test Sometimes I
- 54:33Speaker 24: even try to help define my times on my mind
- 54:36Speaker 24: finds the times to design some rhymes and.
- 54:38Speaker 13: When time permits and I make rhymes, suspend, spend.
- 54:41Speaker 24: My time onto the track, to lay mind tracks of
- 54:43Speaker 24: time because perhaps my rhymes can help others relax their
- 54:46Speaker 24: minds to run their tacks sometimes when they're asking why.
- 54:49Speaker 24: And that's why I expose my life and my flow
- 54:51Speaker 24: showed to be there for other details people from.
- 54:53Speaker 1: Music knows.
- 55:14Speaker 20: Where do I begin?
- 55:15Speaker 8: With you money, where do I even start?
- 55:17Speaker 1: You've been through everything for me. You've been my heart
- 55:20Speaker 1: to see.
- 55:20Speaker 42: Me raster the iasion strength dominate the steeple see me
- 55:23Speaker 42: folding guilt and shave the true weakness of my pain.
- 55:25Speaker 7: You're the solace in my misery, the pleasure in my pain.
- 55:27Speaker 13: And when I want to talk you listen.
- 55:29Speaker 1: It will never be the same.
- 55:30Speaker 42: You were there when she touched me.
- 55:32Speaker 13: You were there for that death.
- 55:33Speaker 1: Communication through you, it's the only thing.
- 55:35Speaker 20: That we have left.
- 55:35Speaker 1: I'll just try to understand.
- 55:37Speaker 42: Sometimes it just may not be what you go Well,
- 55:39Speaker 42: no one knows what you're went through. Well, did you
- 55:42Speaker 42: understand the meaning of wealth? Because your grammies look, give
- 55:44Speaker 42: me one and I can't forget myself. Just fanity in
- 55:47Speaker 42: the garden of God, for California holds me help and
- 55:50Speaker 42: through by the back, drawing through the oh, my my neck.
- 55:52Speaker 7: It helps me keep a clear vision.
- 55:54Speaker 13: But I'm bout it to you because you palm our relationship.
- 56:17Speaker 7: Now you them I'm in my life, the magic diamond
- 56:19Speaker 7: my life. You spark my mind and my life. You
- 56:21Speaker 7: walk the times in my life.
- 56:22Speaker 43: It's only evident that my relationship with you I have
- 56:26Speaker 43: many a sentiment. You're my eternal medicine, and when I reflect,
- 56:29Speaker 43: I integrate your love. How you spread on top of
- 56:31Speaker 43: my rhymes like a maternal hub, mutual and symbiotic. We're
- 56:35Speaker 43: back and forth on this planet, shaking souls like we're
- 56:37Speaker 43: plate tectonic.
- 56:38Speaker 2: Laurel and Hardy.
- 56:39Speaker 43: You have a sort of compatible force man to bring
- 56:41Speaker 43: you from silence to beauty, back to the center where
- 56:44Speaker 43: you first show me strength, then next came to love,
- 56:46Speaker 43: and you taught me how to share this gift with
- 56:48Speaker 43: polity of Ruk. People all around the world bobbed their
- 56:50Speaker 43: heads in the club, locking you in the streets because
- 56:52Speaker 43: they relate to both. The life is different now I
- 56:55Speaker 43: can be alone and still accompany my heart and soul
- 56:57Speaker 43: of us. I know I always have a company that's
- 57:00Speaker 43: right touchdown in every single human's life.
- 57:02Speaker 8: But I take this personal.
- 57:03Speaker 43: That's why I had to highlight on this verse, because
- 57:05Speaker 43: you were the first to give us birth back with
- 57:07Speaker 43: cave men used to bank, sticks against the nerve, aduce
- 57:10Speaker 43: and beats, the melodies like sweet to melochies, and forever
- 57:13Speaker 43: see the parts of you that you brought to me.
- 57:14Speaker 7: I know it's hard to be in every human being,
- 57:17Speaker 7: hard to see that. I know that you know that
- 57:19Speaker 7: your remedy, sincerely.
- 57:20Speaker 20: Yours happened to give my life.
- 58:03Speaker 43: Yo, what's your blessed expression most emotions that easy happened
- 58:07Speaker 43: to give.
- 58:08Speaker 20: My life Yo? What's your blessed Yo? What's your blessed?
- 58:11Speaker 8: Yo?
- 58:11Speaker 20: What's you're blessed? Happen to give my life?

- 58:24Speaker 8: Yo?
- 58:24Speaker 20: What's your blessed expression? Most emotions that he easy has
- 58:28Speaker 20: happened to give my life?
- 58:29Speaker 8: Yo?
- 58:29Speaker 20: What's your blessed Yo? What's your blessed Yo? What's feel
- 58:32Speaker 20: blessed
