Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: What's the secret to a good marriage?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: What are your chances of getting divorced? The new stats
- 0:03Speaker 1: in Z numbers were interesting for a couple of reasons. One,
- 0:05Speaker 1: fewer people are getting hitched. In twenty twenty five it
- 0:08Speaker 1: was seven point six marriages per one thousand people. That's
- 0:11Speaker 1: half the rate it was in the year two thousand.
- 0:13Speaker 1: In nineteen seventy one, which was peak marriage, it was
- 0:16Speaker 1: forty five people per one thousand. So basically, fewer of
- 0:20Speaker 1: us are bothering to get married. I got friends who
- 0:22Speaker 1: are single, don't mind being single. That was far less
- 0:25Speaker 1: acceptable in nineteen seventy one. Number Two, we're getting married
- 0:29Speaker 1: later in life. We put a ring on it at
- 0:32Speaker 1: around twenty in nineteen seventy one. We now wait until
- 0:35Speaker 1: we're in our thirties, and I reckon this is part
- 0:37Speaker 1: of a bigger trend. People still live at home with
- 0:39Speaker 1: their parents when they're twenty five. This is common. They
- 0:42Speaker 1: go to UNI, they don't get proper jobs until sometimes
- 0:45Speaker 1: they're in their late twenties or even early thirties. We're
- 0:48Speaker 1: living longer at the other end of life, and it
- 0:49Speaker 1: feels like we're kind of stretching out childhood a bit
- 0:52Speaker 1: at the beginning as well. Get a dog live at home,
- 0:55Speaker 1: complain about house prices, marry later. Number three divorce the
- 0:59Speaker 1: most interesting. If you're in a marriage and you're wondering
- 1:02Speaker 1: whether you might get a divorce, then I reckon you
- 1:03Speaker 1: probably will. Otherwise, why would you be thinking about or
- 1:06Speaker 1: worrying about it, you know what I mean? The numbers
- 1:08Speaker 1: tell us how long you're likely to be married for
- 1:12Speaker 1: how long you're married before you call it quits. Five
- 1:15Speaker 1: percent quit within five years, fifteen percent within ten years,
- 1:19Speaker 1: and a third within twenty five years. Here's the good news,
- 1:22Speaker 1: the news you should hope for. Sixty percent of couples
- 1:27Speaker 1: remain married for the rest of their lives, happily ever after,
- 1:30Speaker 1: Just like in the movies. A wise man once told me,
- 1:33Speaker 1: the best way to stay married is to just not
- 1:35Speaker 1: get divorced. For more from Early edition with Ryan Bridge.
