- 0:00Speaker 1: Bout the back Bearispocals Barbarau. Thanks for joining us on
- 0:02Speaker 1: the radio or the apps or wherever you listen on
- 0:04Speaker 1: the line to the Yukon Hockey Coaches Shows, the first
- 0:07Speaker 1: of two this week. We've got a men's show tomorrow.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Mike Crispino with Dan Hurley and Tom Moore will be
- 0:12Speaker 1: the guest six to seven writer on the Yukon Sports
- 0:14Speaker 1: Network Varsity Network at varsitynetwork dot com. You know, I
- 0:18Speaker 1: asked you, I think on Friday you know about your
- 0:20Speaker 1: top line, because all four lines I don't there's at
- 0:23Speaker 1: least one player and I know three players or at
- 0:26Speaker 1: least three lines have two players with double digit points.
- 0:29Speaker 1: And you want that because you want that depth. But
- 0:31Speaker 1: it never hurts when your top line, Joey, Tats and
- 0:37Speaker 1: Jake really get going. It just helps. It just seems like,
- 0:41Speaker 1: you know, they're that top line. It would be nice
- 0:43Speaker 1: to see them get going. And right now they're all
- 0:45Speaker 1: on a hot streak.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Right now. Yeah they say they you know, uh had
- 0:49Speaker 2: a pretty good weekend certain points wise, and yeah, it's
- 0:55Speaker 2: you know, it's important that they get going. But as
- 0:58Speaker 2: I said to you, it's important to me that all
- 1:00Speaker 2: the lines are going right, I don't want to be
- 1:02Speaker 2: a one line team. And you know, last year, no
- 1:06Speaker 2: one was counting on Joey Muldowney and Jake Richard to
- 1:11Speaker 2: necessarily lead the team, right, you know, and they did.
- 1:15Speaker 2: So who's to say that Cayden Shahan can be the
- 1:19Speaker 2: this year? Is Joey Muldowney. Like, That's what we're trying
- 1:22Speaker 2: to build is it's not just one line on our
- 1:25Speaker 2: team that is going to score for us. We want
- 1:28Speaker 2: contributions up and down the lineup.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Ethan Witcomb is you know, a sophomore. He's on that
- 1:35Speaker 3: line as well with you know, one of the sophomores.
- 1:37Speaker 3: When you think of Kayden Shahan and Ethan Witcomb last
- 1:40Speaker 3: year they were working hard together with Ethan Gardula. What's
- 1:43Speaker 3: the the update on Ethan Witcomb and kind of what
- 1:47Speaker 3: you're seeing his progress being.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he's coming along. I think right now
- 1:52Speaker 2: he's playing with Ethan Gardula and Mike Murtag and they're
- 1:56Speaker 2: given us solid minutes. He scored a nice goal in
- 2:00Speaker 2: the power play the other day, you know, so he's
- 2:04Speaker 2: it's it's a always a work in progress and he's
- 2:09Speaker 2: continuing to work hard at his craft. And continuing to
- 2:12Speaker 2: take coaching. And I saw him out there early this
- 2:15Speaker 2: morning working on his game. So that's all we can ask,
- 2:18Speaker 2: and you know, just be coachable and keep working hard
- 2:22Speaker 2: and good things will happen.
- 2:24Speaker 1: How different is tats in the middle? I know Ryan
- 2:27Speaker 1: played with Joey and Jake in the postseason when Honey
- 2:31Speaker 1: got hurt. How different is he in the middle than
- 2:34Speaker 1: say Hudson was, And what they what their talents are.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Yeah, they're different players. They're certainly different players, but they
- 2:40Speaker 2: are also similar in some aspects. They're both very good
- 2:45Speaker 2: offensive players. Ryan probably shoots the puck better than Hudson.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Hudson's probably a little more crafty and you know, savvy
- 2:56Speaker 2: of a pockey player. But you know, they're still both excellent.
- 3:01Speaker 2: And you know, I think Joey and Jake, you know,
- 3:06Speaker 2: are still thriving, whether it's Hudson or Ryan in between them.
- 3:12Speaker 3: With Ryan, what if you're a Yukon fan and you're
- 3:17Speaker 3: showing up to watch a game and you're seeing that line,
- 3:20Speaker 3: it just feels like Ryan is he skating with confidence?
- 3:25Speaker 3: What is he doing that's making him kind of jump
- 3:27Speaker 3: off the ice at you as a fan watching watching
- 3:30Speaker 3: him play?
- 3:31Speaker 2: I think he's been like that since his sophomore year.
- 3:33Speaker 2: He just competes very hard. He skates well. Uh, he's
- 3:38Speaker 2: tenacious on the puck. Yeah, you know, he's just yeah,
- 3:42Speaker 2: he's very very tenacious on the puck. And he's a
- 3:45Speaker 2: good penalty killer. You know, plays a game the right way.
- 3:49Speaker 2: He's a two hundred foot player and he takes pride
- 3:52Speaker 2: in that.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Mike, and I'll use a comparison with Gino's team here
- 3:55Speaker 1: because you know, there are players that love to pass
- 3:57Speaker 1: for a shoot later. I mean, Page, you know that'd
- 4:00Speaker 1: be drilled by Gino. Shoot the ball, Shoot the ball, right.
- 4:04Speaker 1: You probably have a couple of players like that, ye,
- 4:06Speaker 1: that have that, you know, and they've got to make
- 4:09Speaker 1: that split second decision to pass or to shoot. I mean,
- 4:12Speaker 1: I know you like good shot just like Gino does,
- 4:15Speaker 1: and you need to be efficient, But how did you know?
- 4:18Speaker 1: That's got to be a tough decision to make because
- 4:20Speaker 1: you're a playmaker, but yet you're being told to shoot
- 4:22Speaker 1: the puck and that's got to be kind of a
- 4:24Speaker 1: fine line, right.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the best way to describe that or
- 4:30Speaker 2: the best thing I've ever heard about shooting the puck
- 4:34Speaker 2: or passing the puck. JP Persi, who used to play
- 4:38Speaker 2: for the Minnesota North Stars. He's a great player, and
- 4:41Speaker 2: we were recruiting his son, Zach a long time ago.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And at the time, we had a great player at
- 4:48Speaker 2: Boston College. His name was Ben Eves and he probably
- 4:51Speaker 2: would have been the all time leading score there if
- 4:53Speaker 2: he didn't get hurt. He missed so many games throughout
- 4:55Speaker 2: his career. But he had a very short stick. And
- 4:59Speaker 2: JP was in on the recruiting visit with Zach and
- 5:01Speaker 2: he said, Benny, your stick's too short, you know. He goes, well, Jp,
- 5:07Speaker 2: I like it because I can handle the puck and
- 5:08Speaker 2: I can pass it better. He goes, yeah, but you
- 5:10Speaker 2: can't shoot the puck as well. And he goes, I know,
- 5:13Speaker 2: but I'd like to pass and stick handle. And he goes,
- 5:16Speaker 2: that's great, Benny. He goes, you get fifty assists, I
- 5:19Speaker 2: get fifty goals. We see who gets paid more. Well,
- 5:23Speaker 2: that's like JA uses a really long stick. Yeah, so
- 5:26Speaker 2: it's to me like, you got to be able to
- 5:29Speaker 2: shoot the puck if you overpass the puck. Yeah, you
- 5:32Speaker 2: know you can't. We don't want to pass the puck
- 5:34Speaker 2: into the net. You got to shoot pucks. There's more
- 5:37Speaker 2: goals that come from pucks being rebounds and deflections and
- 5:42Speaker 2: off of shots than there are back door plays like
- 5:45Speaker 2: those look pretty and they're empty nedders, But how often
- 5:48Speaker 2: do you see them? Not often. I don't know if
- 5:51Speaker 2: we had one. You know, we had four of the
- 5:53Speaker 2: goals we scored this weekend, we're one time. Rashard's was
- 5:56Speaker 2: a one timer, Witcomb's was a one timer. Muldowney's power
- 5:58Speaker 2: play goal was at one time timor uh, Frasier's was
- 6:02Speaker 2: a one timer off of rebound. You know.
- 6:04Speaker 1: So Murdtech scored on a stuff.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Murtag scored on the stuff, you know, and I can't
- 6:09Speaker 2: remember Joey had another one. Uh didn Joey have two on? Yeah? Yes,
- 6:14Speaker 2: So it's just like you got to shoot the puck,
- 6:17Speaker 2: you know.
- 6:18Speaker 3: The footnote to that is Zach Parisi had four hundred
- 6:21Speaker 3: and thirty four goals in his NHL career and almost
- 6:23Speaker 3: nine hundred points, but he did have twenty more assists
- 6:25Speaker 3: than goals, So I don't know if you totally listen.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah, but when you have four hundred goals in the
- 6:30Speaker 2: NHL almost points, you're doing okay. He didn't have one
- 6:33Speaker 2: hundred goals and eight hundred assists.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he did all right.
- 6:36Speaker 2: All right, we'll get to that point. Alexander Vetchkin still
- 6:40Speaker 2: got paid more than Zach Paris.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yeah, so the guys, some guy named Gretzky, although he
- 6:45Speaker 1: had a ton of assists but a lot of goals too.
- 6:47Speaker 1: All right, this we're with cav It's a U kind
- 6:49Speaker 1: of hockey coaches show. We're live at Bear Smokehouse, BARB.
- 6:52Speaker 1: But you stay with us mort a minute here on
- 6:53Speaker 1: their field.
