Transcript
- 0:01There is a discipline that asks an individual to focus on
- 0:04conscious attention to each thought, each emotion and each
- 0:08movement he makes through a process called mindfulness.
- 0:13This is intended primarily to centre the individual's mind and
- 0:16attention and focus the person on the present moment, rather
- 0:20than having the mind jumping in all different directions.
- 0:24The process, however, can also be utilized proactively as part
- 0:29of a development of physical culture, the use of conscious
- 0:33attention to strengthen the physical being and bring its
- 0:37activity into a harmonious and consistent movement.
- 0:41There is in fact, a considerable discipline, including the use of
- 0:45such techniques for helping children become conscious of and
- 0:48develop their physical nature and indeed their entire vital
- 0:53emotional and mental being in a positive way.
- 0:58Dr. Becky Bailey developed a systematic methodology that she
- 1:02teaches called the Conscious Discipline Methodology.
- 1:06While the technique was originally developed for use in
- 1:09the classroom, it has expanded over the last several decades
- 1:13into a comprehensive program that supports childhood
- 1:17education, using evidence from study in developmental
- 1:20psychology and in brain science research.
- 1:25It is clear from the evidence that harnessing the power of the
- 1:28mind to consciously carry out the body's activities can lead
- 1:32to more complete, more powerful, and more harmonious development
- 1:37than the normal, mostly unconscious actions that
- 1:40dominate our daily lives, the mother observes.
- 1:44Quote, but you only have to try it, you will understand very
- 1:49well what I mean. For instance, all the movements
- 1:53you make when dressing, taking your bath, tidying your room, no
- 1:59matter what, make them consciously with the will that
- 2:03this muscle should work. That muscle should work.
- 2:07You will see. You will obtain really amazing
- 2:10results going up and down stairs.
- 2:14You cannot imagine how useful that can be from the point of
- 2:17view of physical culture, if you know how to make use of it.
- 2:22Instead of going up because you are going up and coming down
- 2:26because you are coming down like any ordinary man, you go up with
- 2:30the consciousness of all the muscles which are working and of
- 2:34making them work harmoniously. You will see.
- 2:39Just try a little. You will see this means that you
- 2:43can use all the movements of your life for a harmonious
- 2:47development of your body. You bend down to pick something
- 2:51up. You stretch up to find something
- 2:53right at the top of a cupboard. You open a door, you close it.
- 2:58You have to go round an obstacle.
- 3:01There are 101 things you do constantly and which you can
- 3:05make use of for your physical culture, and which will
- 3:09demonstrate to you that it is the consciousness you put into
- 3:13it which produces the effect 100 times more than just the
- 3:17material fact of doing it. So you choose the method you
- 3:23like best. But you can use the whole of
- 3:26your daily life in this way, to think constantly of the harmony
- 3:31of the body, of the beauty of the movements, of not doing
- 3:35anything that is ungraceful and awkward.
- 3:39You can obtain a rhythm of movement and gesture which is
- 3:43very exceptional. End Quote.
