- 0:00I called Aston Martin, I called Mercedes-Benz, I called Ferrari
- 0:04and I called Porsche. And literally, I kid you not,
- 0:08within about two weeks my garage had four exotic convertibles in
- 0:14it. Tonight on that car show, it's
- 0:17Bassem Wasseth, author, journalist, content creator, and
- 0:21automotive man about town. Bassem is always driving
- 0:26something amazing or checking in from some exotic locale.
- 0:29But it might surprise you how we even broke into this car thing.
- 0:33I'll give you a hint. Sometimes you just have to ask.
- 0:36Also, we've got to say hello to our listeners in Korea who must
- 0:40be the most loyal on the planet. We've been sitting at #8 on the
- 0:45Korean Automotive podcast charts this weekend.
- 0:47You heard it here. If you can get us to #1 Korean
- 0:50listeners, we will do an episode just for you.
- 0:53In the meantime, Gum say, ah, it's Bassam Wassef.
- 0:57It's that car show, and it's a good one.
- 1:04It's that car show. And Lindsay and I have our
- 1:06friend Bassam Wassef here with us tonight.
- 1:09Bassam is one of those car people that just seems to be in
- 1:11all the right places, doing all the coolest stuff all the time.
- 1:15He's the author of several books, a journalist at all the
- 1:18outlets that seem to matter, and an automotive content creator in
- 1:21the truest sense of the word. His work focuses on the culture,
- 1:25the history, and the experience of riding and driving the bikes
- 1:28and the cars that we love. And there's a certain conviction
- 1:30in his tone and effortless elegance in his writing that can
- 1:33come only from genuine passion. So it's been a long time coming,
- 1:37but welcome to that car show, Bassam.
- 1:40Thank you for having me, it's so cool to be here.
- 1:42Yeah, it's so good to see you. We're.
- 1:43Glad to have you. So where do we start with you?
- 1:46Because you are a man of many motoring pursuits, maybe we
- 1:50start with where it all began for you car wise.
- 1:53Gosh, long, long time ago. I'm going to start this like
- 1:57this trip down memory lane that's going to make me say, how
- 1:59did this happen? How did I become the the elder
- 2:02statesman of the? Car watch out, we're the same
- 2:04age I think. It sneaks up on you, Let me tell
- 2:07you. I had no intention of making
- 2:09cars a profession or a life a lifetime of.
- 2:12It was always a passion. I just always geeked out over
- 2:15cars. I was always reading car
- 2:17magazines as a kid, you know? I was singing Matchbox Happy
- 2:20birthday to my Matchbox toys. I love it.
- 2:24Yeah, it starts so early. It starts so early.
- 2:27And that means? We're going to get a really good
- 2:29story. There's, there's a lot of
- 2:31stories. How much time do you have?
- 2:35I know I, I started early and, but I never imagined it would
- 2:39become something, you know, I always just thought, oh, I just
- 2:42like this thing, but I'll do something else.
- 2:44And, you know, everyone else in my family does very different
- 2:47things. So I come from a family of
- 2:48doctors and generationally my parents felt that the only true
- 2:53proper profession was becoming a doctor.
- 2:55And I started on that trajectory.
- 2:57Even though I was doing all the creative stuff that a kid does.
- 3:00In high school, I was, you know, I was a film geek.
- 3:04I was developing film in the lab and I love photography and
- 3:08creative writing and I was journaling like crazy and I was
- 3:11doing a lot of drives, but I never, I always did it
- 3:14therapeutically. You know, that was lucky.
- 3:16My parents got me a Mustang GT convertible as my first car when
- 3:19I was 16. You could do a lot worse, right?
- 3:23Yeah, and I'm lucky to be alive. Sure.
- 3:26Yeah. We are you're like I tried it.
- 3:29Was a lot of power back then. You look at it now and you're
- 3:31like, really? But like, no tracking control,
- 3:34no ABS, like, you know, terrible tires.
- 3:38So I, I really tried to live it as best I could when I was a
- 3:41kid. I, I, Otto crossed and did all
- 3:43these things, but it was pure passion, you know, completely
- 3:48elective on my own, went to UCLA, studied film.
- 3:53I was an English major. I loved writing, I loved
- 3:56literature. I loved all those things.
- 3:57But again, I was on a different path and I decided to go into
- 4:01film and TV. My first job out of college was
- 4:04at Disney, ABC, cable networks, really.
- 4:07And yeah. And I ended up becoming a
- 4:09creative exec there, and I was working on music programming.
- 4:12I'm a big music geek, and music and reality, and I love that.
- 4:17But I was jealous of the people I was hiring because I was
- 4:20hiring all the creatives that were doing the actual fun stuff,
- 4:22not being told what to do. They're not telling people what
- 4:26to do. Went off on my own.
- 4:29I started editing. I edited a couple independent
- 4:32features always had the car bug in in latent, like running on,
- 4:36you know, in the background like a fan, like a noisy fan on a
- 4:38laptop that's. My very specific example.
- 4:42Please continue. And one day I saw a Craigslist
- 4:47ad for a local upscale lifestyle magazine that was looking for an
- 4:52automotive writer. I thought, oh, that'd be totally
- 4:55fun to just throw my name in the hat for whatever, you know, just
- 4:58to see what happens. And so like them and and they're
- 5:03like, we'll just send samples of your work.
- 5:05And I hadn't written anything professionally ever.
- 5:07I thought, well, how about I was like, how about if I create
- 5:10something for you, I'll just write a little essay about
- 5:13something car related. So I did.
- 5:17And it was a real kind of like shot in the dark, but I got a
- 5:20call back and they're like, you know, you seem to know what
- 5:22you're talking about. Do you want to, do you want to
- 5:24do our summer convertible issue? I was like, yeah, but I didn't
- 5:30know. I didn't know anyone in the
- 5:32industry. I didn't know anything about
- 5:34anything except that I like cars.
- 5:36And this was an upscale magazine.
- 5:38So I had to really aim high. I had to think of the best,
- 5:42flashiest cars that I could to let them read like the story
- 5:46because it wasn't quite a done deal.
- 5:49And I really had to prove myself.
- 5:50So I literally called called manufacturers.
- 5:54I called Aston Martin, I called Mercedes-Benz, I called Ferrari,
- 5:58and I called Porsche. And literally, I kid you not,
- 6:02within about two weeks, my garage had four exotic
- 6:07convertibles in it. That's.
- 6:09What you didn't? Say, I think.
- 6:13You maybe missed your calling and you should have gone into
- 6:15sales because? Oh no, definitely not, believe
- 6:20me. Much better.
- 6:22Creating words and images. Yeah, no, I so I, I like, and
- 6:28it's funny, like maybe it was the time, maybe it was whatever,
- 6:31maybe the way the stars aligned. But like Aston Martin, like
- 6:36literally tossed me the keys, didn't ask for a driver's
- 6:38license. I was like, OK, this is, this is
- 6:40cool. But I filled out loan agreements
- 6:43for the 9/11 cabriolet and I got a Maserati Spider.
- 6:46Ferrari was kind of trying to, you know, rise me through the
- 6:50ranks. I didn't quite Ferrari, They
- 6:52said start with Maserati, see how that goes and remember that.
- 6:56Spider too, right? You know it was the twin of the
- 6:58coupe, right? And with.
- 6:59An ad of Ferrari V8 block. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 7:05Oh, it's so tempting. They're so cheap.
- 7:08Buyer beware though. And then the SL55 AMG was
- 7:13supercharged 88.5 point 5. I just love, I didn't know I
- 7:16love that car until I drove it and I was like, wow, this works
- 7:19really well. So I did that and it was a
- 7:23slippery slope because you know, I'm, I'm not trying to my horn,
- 7:27but I was pretty good at the words thing.
- 7:30Like I was thinking I'd like fed all these car magazines over the
- 7:35years and sucked in all this information and it was just like
- 7:39to spig it open. Like I was just like, I could
- 7:42write 10,000 words about a car if I I had the roof.
- 7:45You know, I loved it. It was a trip, but I had no idea
- 7:48how the industry works still. And so Porsche really liked the
- 7:53article. They said, would you like to
- 7:55come out and test the 996GT3 at VIR?
- 7:59And I was like, yeah, but I should check with my I'll check
- 8:05with my editor to make sure that they can fly me out to do this.
- 8:10And they kind of laughed. And they're like, we'll fly you
- 8:12out. Don't worry about that.
- 8:13I was like, whoa, you'll fly me out and you'll put me up and
- 8:18you'll give me seat time. And, you know, next thing I
- 8:20know, I've got like Hurley Haywood in the right seat
- 8:23telling me to break later. And, you know, it was a trip
- 8:26like all of the every step along the way was like, oh, it works
- 8:31like this. OK.
- 8:33And then like my first trip to Europe, I was for, for, for, for
- 8:37automotive. It was like just full immersion.
- 8:41And Mercedes used to have this trip called the, they called it
- 8:44the DNA trip. And it was basically like young
- 8:48journalists early in their careers, let's indoctrinate them
- 8:51and just immerse them in everything about the brand.
- 8:55We'll take them on a factory. Oh yeah, I was complete.
- 8:59I fell for it. I was completely brainwashed.
- 9:01I always liked the brand already.
- 9:02But like, you know, you see how things are in Stuttgart, Like
- 9:06the center of German car culture, one of the centers of
- 9:08German car culture. You tour their massive sprawling
- 9:12factory and then they have 4 classic cars that your small
- 9:18group drives to the classic center.
- 9:20You see their hidden collection of, of F1 cars and all their
- 9:25historical relics that, that are top secret and you know,
- 9:29undisclosed location, nondescript warehouse, like
- 9:33everywhere you turn, you're just like, Oh my God, I can't believe
- 9:37I'm doing this, you know, and then go drive on the Audubon
- 9:41unrestricted and see what that's like.
- 9:43You know, I was in love. I was, I, I love film and TV,
- 9:46but I was like, it's really hard to go back to that when, when
- 9:50this part of my childhood that's part of my imagination is being
- 9:54really nurtured and brought to life, right?
- 9:58So yeah, it was like a drug. I couldn't say no.
- 10:00And well, it's like you said, I think it's so interesting when
- 10:02you look back and just consuming all the car magazines the way
- 10:06you were effectively you were researching and training and
- 10:09learning without realizing it, which is a lot of times more
- 10:13effective. And then all it took was the one
- 10:15opportunity and you're like, wait, I've been training for
- 10:17this my whole life. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:20In a weird way it's sort of a language too.
- 10:22It's like off mags, like there's this sort of way of thinking and
- 10:27communicating. And this is pre Internet so you
- 10:32know, before the really personal takes on cars they were more
- 10:36like literature. It's almost like your favorite
- 10:39author getting into a car and and and waxing poetic about
- 10:43what's great sucks. What were you reading?
- 10:46And I guess were there any particular journalist that you
- 10:48really put on a pedestal because it was a different time, you
- 10:51know, this long format stuff. I mean, there were some some,
- 10:53there was some brilliant writing in those magazines back then.
- 10:57Yeah, Peter Egan is one of my heroes.
- 10:59Might as well. Yeah, I, I mean, I read his.
- 11:02His every, everything that came out and all the compilation
- 11:06books, you know, John Phillips, I love there.
- 11:11There's a lot of that, you know, David E Davis era of journalists
- 11:16that really put it out there. You know, set right is one of
- 11:22those like I didn't grow up reading him, but when I when I
- 11:24got into him later, I was like, this guy's brilliant.
- 11:27Like he brings it to the next level, like a lot of it's like,
- 11:32but it's so great, you know, and he goes really in deep too.
- 11:35I mean, I have I have thick books on like 1950s F one cars
- 11:40by him, you know, like talking like hundreds of pages of of
- 11:44just like it's dense, but it's great.
- 11:47You can see the research in the size of the book.
- 11:50Yeah. Absolutely, yeah.
- 11:51And then like, you know, one of my one of my personal mentors
- 11:55was Randy Leffingwell. Is Randy Leffingwell, prolific
- 11:59author and great photographer and really helped me with my
- 12:04first book and give me an idea of how to tackle that because I
- 12:06was completely overwhelmed. My first book assignment from
- 12:10Motor Books back then, Motor Books, Legendary Motorcycles.
- 12:15And I just looked at the word count and the page count and all
- 12:20the photos I had to take and acquire and like process.
- 12:25And I just told them, like, how do you do this?
- 12:28And he just stopped and he turned to me and said, how do
- 12:32you eat an elephant? I was going to say that.
- 12:36One bite at a time. You just start like that first
- 12:39step and then process. Yeah, it's literally one of the
- 12:45questions I had for you for later.
- 12:46I want to talk about your Myers Manx, but but we'll we'll get to
- 12:48that. You know, it just seems like
- 12:49such a such a thing, right? Like where do you start?
- 12:52But I want to ask what makes car content great?
- 12:55Whether it's a book, whether it's a video?
- 12:56Like what? What is it?
- 12:57What, what, what? Set something above the rest.
- 13:01I think especially now more than ever, it's so hard to hold
- 13:05attention. It's so hard to to grasp on to
- 13:09something that somebody's telling you and want to hear
- 13:12more and have that appetite of learning something you didn't
- 13:14know. And it's it's that OFT referred
- 13:19to dopamine hit of like, oh, I didn't know that.
- 13:22Tell me more. You know, because there's so the
- 13:25opposite. There's so much, you know, how
- 13:27many memes can you take in before you just want to like
- 13:30throw your phone away? Or how many you know, how many
- 13:34predictable stories can you hear before you just decide you need
- 13:39to change your channel? And so I think what makes for
- 13:42great, great content is great people telling those stories.
- 13:49And even if the story is your is an Instagram short or a YouTube
- 13:53YouTube short, just saying something that like, Oh, I
- 13:57didn't know that. Look at what this guy's guy
- 13:59girls doing or saying. You know, engagement.
- 14:02I think it really like boils down to engagement.
- 14:06Well, I think like you said, there is so much content.
- 14:08I think people gravitate towards authenticity.
- 14:11And so to your point, like if you have good people putting the
- 14:15content out, that colors what they're saying.
- 14:19And I think it holds people's attention.
- 14:20A. 100% it has to be the truth, you know?
- 14:24It has to be the unvarnished, what you liked and what you
- 14:27didn't like. And if in the best possible
- 14:30world, what you like makes you go crazy because it's what
- 14:33you've always been looking for. Yeah.
- 14:35Yeah. Like better hearing feel and
- 14:37that Lotus Elise, I just. This is what I want in every
- 14:41car. That's.
- 14:42Yeah. And if it's something that you
- 14:43don't like, it's it should be morally repugnant to you.
- 14:46Like, how dare they make the steering wheel white.
- 14:50That's just awful. Who does or why does Mercedes
- 14:55put the door controls on the door?
- 14:56Like, I want to reach out whatever stupid thing triggers
- 15:00you, you know, like, if it's an authentic reaction, I think
- 15:04there's somebody out there who goes, Oh, yeah, I hate that too,
- 15:08you know? They're just like me.
- 15:11I'm so relatable. Car journalists, they're just
- 15:15like us. Right and.
- 15:18How about that Lotus Elise, huh? Really.
- 15:20One of the great. Happens only though, by the way,
- 15:22can we just step aside and say for a second like, what is wrong
- 15:25with us? We can talk about cars forever,
- 15:29right? Yeah.
- 15:30The Lotus Elise, I went to a launch it at at Atlanta, Atlanta
- 15:38and I will never forget this because it was my First off in a
- 15:43car on a track and it was one of the first time track.
- 15:48It was very memorable and later found out that it wasn't my
- 15:51fault, but at the time I felt really bad about it.
- 15:55I'm coming over the Crest and I can't really see where I'm going
- 15:59to come over the Crest and I, I kind of like come out on the
- 16:03curbing and I'm on the curbing. So I'm correcting and I'm trying
- 16:07to drive off the curb and going down that hill and, you know,
- 16:11the curbing is very rough. It's like a serrated knife edge.
- 16:14And the Elise is not very compliant.
- 16:16It's pretty tightly. Well, especially the driving one
- 16:19of the IT was the Exige, I think actually.
- 16:22And all of a sudden car starts to spin.
- 16:26I was like, and I I get out of the car and they come to take
- 16:32the car and it's very shameful. It's like, yeah, you're that
- 16:35guy. Everybody stop what they're
- 16:37doing. Jerk has the worst.
- 16:40It's the worst moment. I'd never wish that on anyone.
- 16:43No, but I looked back at the back wheel and the back wheel
- 16:48was like this. And what happened was the the
- 16:53oscillation of the curbing had snapped the trailing arm.
- 16:58So the back wheel does that doesn't really help.
- 17:01You're trying to control the car.
- 17:03Counterproductive. Yeah, seems like to rotate
- 17:06anyway, so no. Expert but.
- 17:11Ask me how I know. But yeah, yeah, I just think
- 17:13those are one of my bucket list cars.
- 17:15You know, Lindsay and I have talked about them.
- 17:17They're not getting cheaper. I've kept an eye on them too and
- 17:20it's like they're going up. It's hard to find low mile ones
- 17:22too. And it's hard to find them
- 17:23without the clamshell being like damaged or previously damaged.
- 17:28And that'll total the car out. But the the the silver lining of
- 17:32really crappy British construction is if this is might
- 17:35be apocryphal, but when you get a new bonded aluminum tub if you
- 17:41need to, it's way better than what came out of the factory
- 17:45because took them time to get the tolerances right and figure
- 17:48out how to make it proper. Right.
- 17:51It's kind of amazing. That thing was even built in
- 17:532005, right? It was a a car out of its time
- 17:56and just so good at manual steering with that tiny little
- 17:59steering wheel. It's just you can't match that
- 18:02in anything Made sense. And yeah, it's just, it's an
- 18:05amazing thing. Not sure I could fit in one
- 18:07anymore, but damn they're good. They're they're kind.
- 18:11For me, the supercharged really was the sweet spot because yeah,
- 18:15OK, I mean, you can be patient with the 1.9 liter NA engine,
- 18:20but to have that just help things along makes the whole
- 18:24patch kind of just feel more complete.
- 18:25Yeah, absolutely a nice one. They made them great colors,
- 18:28yes. They.
- 18:30Did well, they're so I mean, and when you do see them out and
- 18:33about, they always catch your attention.
- 18:35You know, maybe that's because, as you said, we all have this
- 18:37car sickness where we're always looking.
- 18:40Totally. But like, even when it was new,
- 18:42like you'd drive it around and people would think it was like a
- 18:45$200,000 car. And then when it was new, it was
- 18:48like when it debuted it was like 39 K or something.
- 18:51I know. I.
- 18:52Know very accessible. Yeah, it's one of those cars.
- 18:55If we'd go back in time, I'd buy 10, right?
- 18:57It's just. That and air cold 9 elevens but
- 18:59that's another. Story.
- 19:00Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, well, Speaking of going
- 19:02back in time, you know, one of the things I think is neat about
- 19:04you've asked them is that you've written for two different
- 19:07magazines that, as as a kid growing up in the Midwest,
- 19:10really defined luxury in my eyes.
- 19:12Rob Report and DuPont Registry, I think you're roughly my age
- 19:16and I assume that you were reading them back in the day as
- 19:18well and pouring over the same, you know, slant nose conversions
- 19:21and wide body 560 SEC's and all this.
- 19:24How is the definition of automotive luxury changed in
- 19:27your eyes since those halcyon days of the 80s and 90s?
- 19:34I think the extremes have expanded.
- 19:36If you look at it as a spectrum, you know, back then there were
- 19:42Bugattis, you know, like back when I was growing up, it was
- 19:45the, it was the, what was it called?
- 19:50110 or EB110? Thank you.
- 19:52You know, that there was that. Yeah.
- 19:57And they were really plush, archaic versions of, of luxury
- 20:03cars. And on my poster there were
- 20:06things like Testarossas and Countashas and and the odd 930
- 20:10turbo. But you have so many boutiques
- 20:15that have entered the fray and you've got, you know, the
- 20:18Koenig's Eggs and the Paganis and the and I think that created
- 20:22an arms race, at least in the hypercar world to, to go Wilder.
- 20:29And so Lamborghini was already wild.
- 20:31But then they started doing all these limited production
- 20:33versions for multi $1,000,000 that went just, you know, off
- 20:38the deep end. I think luxury cars benefited
- 20:41from technology. I mean, to the point where like
- 20:46when they were developing the Rolls Royce Phantom 7, they got
- 20:50it so quiet that you'd get Vertigo in it.
- 20:52You know, like you were just like missing the edge of all
- 20:56these limits. And like, you know, cars like
- 21:00the remark Navara just accelerating so hard, like may
- 21:04as well 'cause internal damage your organs.
- 21:07You know, like there's all these exploitations of ideas like the
- 21:13fastest, you know, or the car that could go anywhere, you
- 21:16know, all the off road, like, you know, the Defender Octa and
- 21:19all these like, kind of like extreme things.
- 21:22You can get the word unthinkable before from a factory.
- 21:25I mean, you could build it up and try to make it something
- 21:27exotic, but like to have a reliable, a relatively reliable
- 21:30factory offering that's that can do these crazy things.
- 21:35I think all the niches just slowly got filled.
- 21:38And maybe that's part of the reason why I am new cars are
- 21:43great and I love experiencing them and I love driving on race
- 21:47tracks. I love doing all the things that
- 21:49come in my job. But part of the my job that I
- 21:52love also is classics. I mean, I write more about
- 21:54classics now and they really talk to me like I love old cars
- 22:00because they tell a totally different story.
- 22:02And the end goal is not having 4 digit horsepower or rearranging
- 22:08your guts or, you know, all the things that you can do under
- 22:13controlled circumstances. But in the real world, it's so
- 22:16hard to touch upon that it becomes more of a perception
- 22:21game than a experiential game. Not to not to overly
- 22:27intellectualize it, but you know, I mean, there's something
- 22:31about getting into a car and smelling the leather and feeling
- 22:37like history is talking to you or feeling like there's, there's
- 22:43interfaces that you'll never have.
- 22:44Now, like I drive a 1963 Land Rover that has a metal dashboard
- 22:49that lap belts that I barely ever use because I think it's
- 22:52probably better to be thrown out, right?
- 22:55You know, actually you don't want.
- 22:56To be held in. Yeah.
- 22:58But it's, it's an experience. Like going to the grocery store
- 23:02is great. You know, I it's it's
- 23:05exhilarating and it's not fast and it's not, you know, it's not
- 23:09sanitized, but you're interacting with a machine and
- 23:12it's just a special experience. Yeah.
- 23:15Well, and I think that's so true for car people because we talk a
- 23:17lot about, you know, especially with social media engagement is
- 23:21a big buzzword. But when you think about for car
- 23:24people, we talk about like what's an engaging drive?
- 23:27And I think you and I are similar in that we share a lot
- 23:30of the car experiences with our family.
- 23:32And Ryan, you do too. And the classic cars, I think
- 23:36you don't need to, you can't go to the track, you know, with
- 23:39your kids. So it lets you enjoy the hobby
- 23:43in a way that's very unique and engaging.
- 23:45And like you said, the cars have such stories that it's like it's
- 23:51kind of going back in time a little bit, but it.
- 23:53Really is can I turn the tables and have you guys just talk
- 23:56about your favorite classic cars, either personal or or
- 24:00whatever you do, Brian? You.
- 24:02Go first. Sure.
- 24:03Well, I know you've been on the Colorado Grand, right?
- 24:07What did you drive on the Grand IF?
- 24:09You sound like a spoiled brat now. 300SL roadster thank you
- 24:15Mercedes-Benz classic. It was a dream and and I love.
- 24:19Those. Guys, Oh my God, they're they're
- 24:21the greatest. And I was lucky enough to do the
- 24:23meal. Amelia in a 300SL coupe, which
- 24:28bucket list? Check.
- 24:29Incredible. Incredible.
- 24:31Amazing and I'm with you, Bassam.
- 24:32That is the car that does it for me.
- 24:34There's just something about that package.
- 24:36I think for the grand, I think the roadster is probably the
- 24:38better mount for a couple of reasons, right.
- 24:41You just open and you know every a little more compliant and this
- 24:43and that is the car. I get it now.
- 24:45I've never been in a car like that, you know, until recently
- 24:48and I get it now. That is a car that does it for
- 24:51me. I really have fallen in love
- 24:53with a Porsche 356 as well. Again, something that that's new
- 24:57to me, always been on my radar. I've I'm going to say it again,
- 25:02I'm going to brag about this till the day I die.
- 25:03I spent a day with Rod Emery in one of his cars on the grand
- 25:06this last year and it just all came together for me, right.
- 25:10So those are the two that really kind of do it for me.
- 25:13But I also see the appeal of an old Land Rover or even an old G
- 25:17wagon or something, horses for courses.
- 25:19But there is something you can't replicate that they, they don't
- 25:23bake that experience into a car anymore, do they?
- 25:26And it's it's, it's the only way to get it right is this is to go
- 25:29back in time. So what about you, Lindsay?
- 25:32What, what? What does it for you?
- 25:33I know I was sitting. Here, other than the Broncos.
- 25:35Or maybe it isn't well. The Broncos on the.
- 25:38Right. Like I think you make a good
- 25:40point to Bassem about like a lot of these hyper cars, the only
- 25:44way to truly enjoy them or really experience them at their
- 25:46fullest is the racetrack. But that's not most of our daily
- 25:50lives. And so if you have a classic
- 25:52like your Land Rover, it lets you turn like a trip to the
- 25:55grocery store into an experience, especially if you
- 25:58can take your family with you. So that plays into a lot of my
- 26:03choices when I think about like what my favorite classics are.
- 26:06You know, I'm, I'm very lucky that my family has a 73 Bronco
- 26:09that I have access to. So of course, you know, I had to
- 26:12start with the Bronco, but that is one of the few that has back
- 26:15seats so the kids can go in the back.
- 26:17And my daughter has really connected to that one.
- 26:20Like she'll go out and ask if we can take the Bronco out for a
- 26:22drive, which I, you know, of course I'm going to encourage.
- 26:26And the thing that has struck me about the Bronco is how much joy
- 26:31it brings just across the board. Like if you take the Bronco for
- 26:35a drive, it doesn't matter who you pass age, you know, sex,
- 26:39race, whatever the number of people that point and smile or
- 26:42if they're with somebody, they'll tap them on the shoulder
- 26:44to make sure they see the car. Like I love that element of it.
- 26:48And it's just fun to drive and it's fun to compare to the more
- 26:51modern examples of Broncos, which is what I learned to drive
- 26:55in. So it's different.
- 26:56You know, I love trucks and SU VS so that's obviously has, you
- 27:01know, a soft spot for that. But I also love a 289 Cobra
- 27:06because those are just like Ryan, you said, I get it.
- 27:09And literally within like a second of my first drive in the
- 27:13Cobra, I in my head, I went, oh, I get it.
- 27:16And you know, because a lot of my.
- 27:18Driving car? What a special car.
- 27:20It's, I mean, it's so special. It's really unique.
- 27:24Most of my performance driving had been on a track that was
- 27:27kind of the first, like classic on the street in a long time.
- 27:32And I shocked myself because I went, OK, oh, I get it.
- 27:35And I went, I don't ever have to go to the track again.
- 27:38I just have to do this every Saturday morning.
- 27:41You know how lucky you are to have that car in your family.
- 27:44I know you know that, but just as a as an outsider, right?
- 27:47I mean, that's just like that doesn't happen you.
- 27:49Know no. I get chased.
- 27:51People are having a hard 9/11. It's special.
- 27:54It's really cool. So that so I have three
- 27:57favorites. The other one is the Shelby
- 27:59GT350 because that's what I learned how to drive a manual.
- 28:03Oh my God, I thought I was spoiled.
- 28:04Geez, I'm just going to leave now, right?
- 28:08Yeah. The gauntlet has been thrown.
- 28:11Love it, game on. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 28:15That just means it's fun for all of us.
- 28:17That is a good family. I do not come from a car family.
- 28:21So that's what I was going to ask you like was this, you know,
- 28:23because people always and I know like your son has been
- 28:26interested in cars. My daughter is too, Ryan.
- 28:28I know your daughter has been and we've talked about myself.
- 28:32Because kind of he's, he's honestly like he's, he tolerates
- 28:36cars now at this point because he's, he's into rockets and
- 28:40like, yeah, he's leapfrogged me. He's he's way over.
- 28:46But that's what you like to see, right?
- 28:47You want the next generation to leave.
- 28:48Ahead, I feel no compunction to make him do anything or like he
- 28:53is his own kid, you know, and he can run with it and there's an
- 28:57actual like a a great industry behind it.
- 29:00So like, you know, more power to him.
- 29:02Right. Literally.
- 29:04Totally. I mean, who knows what's
- 29:05happening to the car business right now like.
- 29:08What a mess. We'll get to that.
- 29:11Yeah, it's, well, you know, I guess related, you know, you
- 29:14recently authored a book on a brand that, well, here, I'll
- 29:18show it. What a cool thing.
- 29:21It's a brand that we hear at the car show have been crushing on
- 29:24for a while now. My Myers Manx, They're just such
- 29:27cool things. And I think they speak to a lot
- 29:29of these sort of elements of joy, right, that we've we've
- 29:31talked about. It's one of the few new cars you
- 29:33can buy that does that. I think in my eyes, this book is
- 29:37about the 60th anniversary of the mark that's been reborn
- 29:41under the leadership of of Philip Seraphim.
- 29:42It's it's such a say that again, it's such a cool book.
- 29:46And I know, you know, my background is, is our direction,
- 29:49graphic design. You know, I know how much work
- 29:52something like this takes. You know, it's so well
- 29:55researched. It's massive.
- 29:58You talked a little bit about this before, you know, but where
- 30:00do you start with something like this?
- 30:01Because this is a brand that really, you know, for all
- 30:03intents and purposes, was dormant for many, many years,
- 30:06right? Yeah, I mean, the beauty of the
- 30:09brand is it's a real, it's a rare example of an imprint of
- 30:13one man's vision. It's not a committee, it's not
- 30:19people telling him what to do. He had this vision and he was an
- 30:23artist and A and, and an engineer, like he had both sides
- 30:27of the brain, like he could understand how things fit
- 30:29together and how to make them work.
- 30:32And that was the beauty of being able to tell the story was it
- 30:36was honestly like the story tells itself because the man
- 30:39lived the lived the dream. And even though, you know, some
- 30:43of his business decisions were not the greatest, like the, the
- 30:47legacy is incredible and the brand survived and the brand is,
- 30:51is going strong right now, which is amazing thanks to Philip RFM
- 30:55and and Truesdale ventures that that took it over.
- 31:01But you know, you can, you can dive so deep into the guy's life
- 31:06in the course of the company, in the ups and downs, but the proof
- 31:10is in the pudding. Like just sit in the driver's
- 31:12seat of a of a classic Manx and just even just take it around
- 31:16the block and you'll get it. You'll just giggle like.
- 31:20Yeah, that's another, I get it, driving experience.
- 31:23Yeah. They're so pure.
- 31:25I mean, we're talking about the Elise being pure.
- 31:27This is just like a translation of that idea applied to
- 31:30something that can drive on sand dunes and go all over the place.
- 31:34You know, fiberglass tub. It's so air elemental, air
- 31:36cooled engine in the back. It's it's so functional and it's
- 31:41so lightweight and you know, you can you can drive Baja in it.
- 31:46I mean, it's not like functional for daily, daily driving, but
- 31:50for, for, for a buggy, like for fun, it's just, it's hard to
- 31:55beat it. You know, it's, it's a great
- 31:57experience. And so it's so specific to
- 32:00California too. That's what I love about the
- 32:02stories such as Southern California beach culture story.
- 32:07And it's so evocative of a place and time.
- 32:10You know, 1964 anything was possible and moon landings and
- 32:15everything that was coming, you know, it was just like a, a
- 32:18magical time. And like, I can't imagine a, a
- 32:22guy right now with an idea that big doing it without having
- 32:29venture capital come in and make it something that it's not.
- 32:33And, you know, dilute the the vision of of this very simple,
- 32:38pure thing. The great thing about taking
- 32:42over brand like that couple years ago is everybody has a
- 32:47memory of it. Everybody.
- 32:49You know, there's this well formed idea, there's this well
- 32:51formed concept and you know, they're working on an EV and it
- 32:55actually kind of makes sense for the format because it is, it
- 33:01enables you to experience your surroundings without
- 33:03distraction. You know, I mean, imagine if
- 33:07you've ridden a electric dirt bike or you've ridden anything
- 33:11electric out in nature, like you hear birds chirping, you hear
- 33:14like the leaves crunch under the tires, like it's a just a
- 33:17different experience, you know, and you're not going to drive
- 33:21it, you know, across the state anyway.
- 33:23So you don't need 304 hundred miles of range, right?
- 33:27It's a very interesting paradigm.
- 33:29Yeah, yeah. It's such an iconic shape.
- 33:32I mean, it's right up there with anything, the shape of the
- 33:34silhouette of a 9/11 or anything else.
- 33:35So you know it when you see it, it's just, it's just part of the
- 33:39culture, right? Especially in Southern
- 33:40California, you know? Yeah.
- 33:42Related. Just say I'm, I'm obsessed with
- 33:45with these icons. I hate to use the word icon, but
- 33:47really the, the iconic vehicles whose DNA hasn't really, you
- 33:53know, has a through line that goes decades, you know, 9/11
- 33:56Stang Land Rover, like there's only Jeep, there's only a
- 34:00handful of them. But like they, they kept their
- 34:03soul and know they have to adapt and modernize and meet safety
- 34:08standards and everything. Like you look at and you know
- 34:10what it is and that's that's a beautiful.
- 34:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You can't buy that, right?
- 34:15I mean, you, you that has to be organic and, and yeah, it's rare
- 34:19and it's special. And I guess related, please tell
- 34:22me that you've flown Myers Manx Airways.
- 34:25Oh, I have not flown yet. You have all people.
- 34:29I've sat in the plane. I know, Phillip, yeah, Ryan
- 34:33said. I need to fly it.
- 34:36Yeah, I think that is the coolest thing.
- 34:38Ever. It is so cool and it's like
- 34:40embodies once again, like it's not the fastest.
- 34:43It's not like, you know, you could have had a jet as a
- 34:46mascot, but it just wouldn't fit the mission.
- 34:48The ideas go anywhere, you know, land on water, land on on ground
- 34:53and I have a soft spot for amphibs.
- 34:55You know, I consulted for Icon aircraft back in the day when
- 34:59they were starting up and they were going to market.
- 35:02And it was a really neat airplane that was just built
- 35:05around the Spirit of Adventure carbon fiber airframe.
- 35:09And you could fold the wings and put it on a trailer and you
- 35:13could land on water and then it had wet landing gear and then
- 35:17you could take off and then go land in an airport.
- 35:19And it was a really, really neat thing so that.
- 35:25Sounds very fun. Yeah.
- 35:27And the old, the old saying is like when you're a kid, you're
- 35:30either interested in the fastest thing or the thing that can go
- 35:33anywhere. You know, that's the thing that
- 35:36can go anywhere is an amphibious airplane.
- 35:38That's cool, that's cool. You have a thing for old
- 35:41Mercedes-Benz cars too. As as do we.
- 35:44Yeah, but you're. Tight with our friends at the
- 35:49classic center and all this. And what is it about, you know,
- 35:53these old Mercedes-Benz cars and, and specifically, what is
- 35:56it about those Bruno Sacco era cars that's so wonderful?
- 36:00They're so good. My one of my first cars in
- 36:06college was a 67 fintail and it just felt different from
- 36:12everything else. You know, it was my uncle's car.
- 36:15I bought it off of him. It needed a lot of work, but I
- 36:18got it going and I thought I was really hot stuff because I
- 36:22resurrected this car and it was dusty relic to this working
- 36:26machine. And I was driving it to a
- 36:28Christmas party And I, this is before I got the registration
- 36:32sorted out. So it had expired tags and I
- 36:34parked in an alley because I was 19.
- 36:37That's what you do. And I go, I'm going to a
- 36:42Christmas party, I'm going to buy a gift.
- 36:44And I, I look over my shoulders, I'm walking away from it as you
- 36:47should with any good looking car, except this one was on fire
- 36:50when I look back at it. So I, I mean, I had the story.
- 36:58My car's on fire and like, you know, nobody's showing up yet.
- 37:02So I put out the fire with my sweater and this.
- 37:08Just gets better. In my youthful naivete, I call
- 37:11911. I reported with that fire, but
- 37:14it's out now, so don't worry about it.
- 37:16You know, like, well, we're coming anyway.
- 37:17I'm like, well, I won't be here. I just I just see this vision of
- 37:23of massive swatting this, you know, this, this, I don't know
- 37:26this beautiful sweater, you know, at this, at this car and
- 37:28just. You know at this beautiful.
- 37:30Car, which is cool. Vision.
- 37:31Great, yeah. Yeah, yeah, I mean, it was, it
- 37:33was exciting. Classic car ownership is so
- 37:36exciting and but I still fell in love with the brand.
- 37:39I don't know what it was. I just got sucked in.
- 37:41And I've since owned, you know, many Mercedes Benzes.
- 37:45I've had AR1O7450SL and CLK430 S 400 SEL, so another Sacco, the
- 37:57sedan, and then I had AV12 coupe for a while because I'm really
- 38:03glutton for punishment. But that's a terrifying car to
- 38:05own. I love the car.
- 38:06It's probably one of the best cars I've ever owned.
- 38:09So over engineered, so revolutionary for its time.
- 38:13If you go on YouTube and search for a better half drive.
- 38:17Why does she hate the W 140 and but same thing the terrifying.
- 38:24One of the more scary moments was when I thought the engine
- 38:29was going to grenade itself because it started running
- 38:31really rich and smelled like gas and sounded like it was going to
- 38:35blow up. But Long story short, it was
- 38:38just the air intake until 1/2 of the cylinder banks.
- 38:40And what happened was the air rushing past the mass air flow
- 38:43sensor made it think that it was getting a lot of air because
- 38:47there's a hole in it. So it dumped a lot of fuel and
- 38:50flooded the engine. Easy fix.
- 38:52I think, OK, no problem. We'll just get one of those air
- 38:55intakes. My mechanic looks around and he
- 38:58finally finds what is literally one of the last ones in the
- 39:02United States, that specific part.
- 39:05And I'm like, OK, that's, that's worrisome.
- 39:08Can you just get the other one to make it, you know, so that
- 39:11they, because I know the other one's probably going to go
- 39:13through anyway that he goes no longer available.
- 39:16It's like just that that's the problem.
- 39:19You just get the one OK And you know little things like plastic
- 39:23parts like if they go out like I bought a new old stock third
- 39:28brake light housing on eBay, literally new old stock like in
- 39:32the in the factory box and I put it in and it falls apart again.
- 39:35It's just fact plastic. Great.
- 39:37So there is a company that will 3D print these things for you
- 39:41and I did that. But yeah, I mean, but how many
- 39:44fall backs do you have? You know, like how many lives?
- 39:47Can you do that? Yeah.
- 39:49Exactly, damn it if those cars just aren't wonderful.
- 39:52You know I drove A124 wagon for the first time in years recently
- 39:56and you just remember it just all comes back to you.
- 39:59And with those cars represented to me when I was a kid, I mean,
- 40:03we drove a Chrysler minivan. We had, you know a Volkswagen
- 40:06dasher. We didn't have that kind of car
- 40:08and the person who drove that kind of car was the kind of
- 40:10person I wanted to be someday, right?
- 40:12And you get in and there's. Visibility everywhere and they
- 40:14just there's a way they drive and a just AI don't know casual
- 40:18sort of it's like a you know, walk softly but carry a big
- 40:21stick, you know in a car you. Know they don't have anything to
- 40:24prove. Back then is it like, and I went
- 40:27back and read old reviews of of the W140 and C140 and it was
- 40:31like, you know, it was revered because I mean price adjusted to
- 40:36modern inflation. I mean, my car was modern times
- 40:40would be $275,000 new and so and there weren't that many ex car
- 40:47Expo cars that were that expensive back then.
- 40:48So it was a really big deal to have AV 12 Mercedes.
- 40:51It just meant something different, yeah.
- 40:53Yeah. What kind of power did that put
- 40:55out? It was. 380-9389 OK, well,
- 40:59that's a lot, yeah. It was all about the torque,
- 41:01though. Like it just, yeah, that started
- 41:03from the beginning. And just this huge plateau of
- 41:05torque. It just felt so effortless.
- 41:08And, you know, Rolls Royce has the whole wafting thing.
- 41:10Like, this is this is really that.
- 41:12This is this is wafty. Yeah, yeah, is.
- 41:14It the original waft. Yeah, so it's so effortless.
- 41:18Yeah, yeah, it's being a Rolls Royce.
- 41:20I love, I love the the idea of an iconic card, but on the
- 41:25engine. So the fact that there's still
- 41:276.75 liters like at the old V eights and now the V12 is like
- 41:33it's a great archaic solution for the problem.
- 41:36Of it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 41:38I mean, I remember the days when they didn't publish those
- 41:41numbers. Oh, yeah.
- 41:42But they said it was adequate, right?
- 41:45Or what was it? It was, yeah.
- 41:47That's pretty funny. Well, so you mentioned better
- 41:49half drive, which I wanted to ask you about because I love
- 41:51that your family, you know, joins you in the car hobby.
- 41:54So how like tell us a little bit about what that is and how that
- 41:58came about? The idea was you don't realize
- 42:04it, but you have these conversations all the time with
- 42:06your spouse. Like you don't realize it when
- 42:08you're having it, but then when you have a special car, the
- 42:12press alone that you only have for a week.
- 42:14And those ideas happened. We were just like, why don't we
- 42:17just put together like, why don't we get a cameras in here
- 42:20because we're talking about these cars.
- 42:22We have these cars, why don't we just do this?
- 42:25And it was amazing to me how many people came back and said,
- 42:29Oh my God, I have the exact same thing with my spouse.
- 42:32Like she thinks I drive too fast.
- 42:34She doesn't like our I love it. Like these friction points that
- 42:38are really actually pretty comical.
- 42:40I think the first one we did was a 9/11 turbo S and I showed her
- 42:45launch control which made her so uncomfortable.
- 42:51Like she hated it. Like she really just like no no,
- 42:54no, no, no please. Like even if the camera wasn't
- 42:57wrong, no don't do it. Don't do it.
- 43:00And I'm begging you. Wet paint do not touch What are
- 43:03you going to do? You just.
- 43:06We're compelled, yeah. Totally, totally so.
- 43:09It's you and your wife. It's a YouTube Siri.
- 43:11You put it on YouTube. Yeah, we put it on YouTube.
- 43:14We should do more of them, really.
- 43:15I mean, there's so much fun to do.
- 43:19But yeah, it's it's it's a fish out of water.
- 43:23And like usually she comes around so like, it's not a
- 43:27formula. This just happens naturally.
- 43:30Doesn't want to drive and she hates the concern about
- 43:34potentially damaging what is usually a very expensive car.
- 43:38We're in the driver's seat and she starts to drive she's like,
- 43:42oh, and then she starts to breathe and then she starts to
- 43:45go a little faster and then she feels a little more comfortable
- 43:48Oh wow Oh, you know this realization that it's just a car
- 43:53and it's it's manageable. I mean, thank God for technology
- 43:58because all these crazy high horsepower cars are actually
- 44:01pretty non intimidating unless you get to the outer edges,
- 44:06outer edges of its limits. And that's a whole other, you
- 44:09know, ball of life. But what we're doing is it's
- 44:12pretty marvelous. And it and it kind of just it it
- 44:15shows the joy of discovering something that was intimidating
- 44:20and realizing that it's it's really doable, you know.
- 44:24Yeah, yeah. Well, we know that you like old
- 44:28cars and you know that. But what excites you about a car
- 44:32in 2026? You know you've driven just
- 44:34about everything. Is there still like a magic to
- 44:36be found in the more pedestrian stuff?
- 44:38Or is there joy only in something like a 9/11 Turbo or a
- 44:41Bentley? It's across the board.
- 44:45It's out there. You don't have to spend a lot of
- 44:47money. And thank God they still make
- 44:49the Miata MX5 still lives, you know, the paragon of, of, of
- 44:54simple sports cars, you know, Jerry 86, all those, all those,
- 45:01all the lower end, you know, less expensive sports cars have
- 45:04the benefit of being lighter and not having the scope creep of
- 45:08having weight. That, and you end up having to
- 45:13put more horsepower into it to move the weight more easily.
- 45:16And then you have to vector the torque so it handles the corner.
- 45:18And then you have all these layers of complexity that can,
- 45:21that can frankly fall apart at the seams when you're driving
- 45:23really hard because simplicity rules at the end of the day.
- 45:28For a while, I, I was a North American car of the year, a
- 45:31juror, and I really loved getting access to everything
- 45:34across the board because it's really eye opening.
- 45:37I mean, there's a real trick and a art and a science to creating
- 45:43a, a simple reproducible car that doesn't break the bank and
- 45:46it works really well. And, you know, I kind of missed
- 45:50that. I actually recused myself from
- 45:52that because I started a production company, Chronoscope
- 45:55Productions, that does automotive marketing videos.
- 45:58And so yeah, it's a different kind of storytelling and it's,
- 46:02it's for the manufacturer. So it's, you know, it's kind of
- 46:07the opposite of journalism in a way.
- 46:09But in a way it's, it's not dissimilar because you're
- 46:12telling stories, you know, and, and hopefully every car has a
- 46:16story and you're, you're communicating that whatever it
- 46:19is. But you know, we've done brand
- 46:21videos. My wife is my producing partner.
- 46:23I directed she predicted and did a video for Bentley called
- 46:28Veneer Hunters about the selection of veneers, which they
- 46:31don't do very often. So the story of that told the
- 46:35story of the McLaren Elva and how it was inspired by the Elva
- 46:40race cars of the 60s and 70s and you know, can am racing and and
- 46:47all of that. We did a video for AGM talking
- 46:50about their home charging system and how you have a power outage.
- 46:56The house has got you because it has energy storage that comes
- 47:00from the car or it can come from the grid.
- 47:03And, you know, it's really just about the way these machines and
- 47:09pieces of technology fit into our lives in a way that's
- 47:12engaging. You know, like we.
- 47:15They can be such appliances or they can be so much fun.
- 47:18Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 47:22I love that because we are sort of like post performance in a
- 47:24lot of ways, right? So it does become about the
- 47:27story and what, what the differentiators are and all
- 47:29that. So no, I, I love that.
- 47:30And I guess that kind of leads me to my next question, not
- 47:33about your production company, but just about automotive
- 47:36journalism, I guess as as a whole.
- 47:39Let's talk about gatekeeping and automotive media, if we could
- 47:41for a second. You know, I'll raise my hand
- 47:44right now and say that I've certainly encountered it.
- 47:47And and while I do think that most folks who do what we do are
- 47:50kind of decent in some cases, you know, extraordinarily
- 47:52generous, it's a thing incidentally, you know, I give
- 47:56you a ton of credit and put you in that that ladder camp for for
- 47:59sure. But you know, what do you
- 48:02attribute this, this gatekeeping to?
- 48:04Is it a knee jerk reaction to like the shrinking editorial
- 48:07budgets, consolidating industry? Is there something more going
- 48:10on? I mean, you know, aren't there
- 48:12enough cookies for everyone or what?
- 48:14What is it? What's What is this all about?
- 48:16Human nature, I don't know, like greed, it's, it's, it's an
- 48:22instinct, you know, I think people have instinct towards it
- 48:24sometimes. Protective.
- 48:26It's protective. It's unfortunate because at the
- 48:29end of the day, we're all into the same thing.
- 48:33And you know, enthusiasm knows no boundaries.
- 48:37And, and I've seen, I mean, I've watched the industry change so
- 48:40much with, you know, the rise of YouTube personalities and, and
- 48:45people just literally grabbing a camera and, and making a life
- 48:48out of it. You know, it's, it's amazing
- 48:50actually. It's so great.
- 48:52So in a way it's democratized, but in another way, you know,
- 48:55some of the legacy organizations behave like legacy organizations
- 49:00for better or worse. So it's mixed back.
- 49:04One, so you've, I mean, you have seen so much change and I always
- 49:09like to ask people, you know, you've seen social media come
- 49:12into the automotive industry and like, how do you feel?
- 49:17Like how do you feel like it has impacted what you do personally
- 49:20and like how you've seen how it has changed the industry too?
- 49:24I mean, personally, and this is just my opinion, it's, it's a
- 49:27necessary evil. We all have to market ourselves.
- 49:30We always all have to be out there and you know, it's good
- 49:34and it's bad. I mean, it's efficient because I
- 49:37don't even think about it. And sometimes I'll post an
- 49:39Instagram story and three weeks later somebody just said, oh,
- 49:43yeah, you did that thing. And I'm like, how did you know?
- 49:45Oh, yeah, I shared it. That's right.
- 49:47It's such a become such a reflexive part of our being or
- 49:51better or worse that, you know, it just it's it's sort of an
- 49:57extension of us, you know, and I, I don't love that because I'm
- 50:02old school. I love being in the moment, you
- 50:04know, I love experience. I'm some experiencing something
- 50:07and not feeling like I have to capture it.
- 50:10And some of my best memories are, you know, the phone is
- 50:13away. I'm not right.
- 50:14Yeah, being. Present.
- 50:17Yeah, but but on the flip side, there's like an arms race for
- 50:21relevancy and everybody's trying to put themselves into that
- 50:24like, oh, I'm doing this, I'm doing that.
- 50:26I'm I'm on the ball. I'm, you know, I'm at all the
- 50:28right place, but yeah. Right.
- 50:33Well. It's really tiresome.
- 50:37And you, I mean, I think it adds an element because you're a,
- 50:40you're a writer, but you are also a photographer, which not
- 50:43everyone is. And I think people have had to
- 50:46become photographers with social media.
- 50:49But like you said, that can make it even more difficult to be
- 50:52present because your instinct is to be taking pictures anyway.
- 50:56For sure. And there is, you know, once you
- 50:58hold the phone up or you pick up your camera, it's a changes the
- 51:03dynamic. You know, there's a self
- 51:05consciousness and like, you know, like I, I had my phone
- 51:10stolen from me once when I was in Europe and, and living
- 51:13without a phone, of course, it was frustrating.
- 51:17And like you know, and then I I took my kids iPad and had to use
- 51:20it for e-mail and stuff. Like this is clunkier than I
- 51:24would have chosen, but. Yeah, I even took a few pictures
- 51:27with it. Like that was that was that I
- 51:29was back by, but it was laurating too.
- 51:32It was like, wow, you know, it's like a different world.
- 51:36I was a little bummed I was walking around like, Italy and
- 51:40not being able to, like, take pictures of things I thought
- 51:42were cool. But you know what?
- 51:44Like Netsam actually got more out of the experience than than
- 51:47not. Yeah.
- 51:47Yeah. Inadvertently going back to the
- 51:51days before cell phones. Like involuntarily I guess.
- 51:55I know so so wild. To bring it back to analog a
- 52:00little bit, you are now writing for Hodinky, if I'm not
- 52:02mistaken. And this is the wristwatch
- 52:05focused media platform that's really changed the landscape of
- 52:09the watch world since it came onto the scene.
- 52:11I've been a watch guy for a long time and as soon as they came
- 52:13along, it just, it changed everything as you as you know.
- 52:16So my first question is what's on your wrist right now?
- 52:18And I guess secondly, are you writing about watches or cars or
- 52:21sort of the natural intersection of the both or what are you
- 52:23doing for them? Ironically, I almost, I feel
- 52:26naked without a watch. But I just took a hot yoga class
- 52:30before I came to the office, and so I left the watch at home.
- 52:35I will stay. I love that Sheffield Nicole
- 52:39watch, by the way. The yellow, yellow watch.
- 52:41Yeah. Love that one.
- 52:43Thank you. My most prized watch possession
- 52:47is my father's Jaeger LA coach club that he gave me because I
- 52:53said, hey, can I have this? And he's the kind of guy that
- 52:56says sure, like no attachment, but it was it holds special
- 53:01significance for the family because when my parents were
- 53:05leaving Egypt, my dad left a little bit earlier and he went
- 53:09to London. Then my mom caught up with him
- 53:11six months later with me and she was in the duty free in the
- 53:15airport in Cairo and she said, I need to buy something that's
- 53:19momentous because we're this is a big life change and I want to
- 53:22sort of give it to my dad. And so I'm just watching gave it
- 53:27to him. So like that to me symbolizes
- 53:30that massive life shift and the chance that they took to live a
- 53:34better life and, and, and a huge change in our destiny.
- 53:38You know, so I love that watch and it's one of my prized
- 53:42possessions and. Objects having histories and
- 53:47stories, I mean, that's an incredible story, and to be the
- 53:50caretaker of that piece is incredible.
- 53:53Yeah, and then another one, my late, my late father in law's,
- 53:57he had a we didn't know he had this watch, but when he passed
- 53:59away in his night stand, we found a old dressy Girard Perego
- 54:07that it was just like, wow, I didn't know.
- 54:12He wasn't really a watch guy, but he grew up in an era when
- 54:14every man had to have a dress watch.
- 54:16So when you wore a suit and that black, you know, dress watch.
- 54:20And for me it was unusual because it was like it was sort
- 54:25of a a rare intersection of our tastes because like, you know,
- 54:29he was a he was an amazing guy, but like we didn't share a lot.
- 54:33Like he wasn't into cars and I, you know, like, but this watch I
- 54:38loved, I was like, I jump, wow, I got it.
- 54:41I did not see this coming. I know it was a it was a
- 54:45beautiful surprise. So yeah, they mean a lot.
- 54:47And and watches, I don't know, it's like they're you wear them
- 54:50on your body. They're they're always, you
- 54:52know, they're pressed against your wrist.
- 54:54And it's so intimate that like when it's a family generational
- 54:59heirloom like that, it means all the more because you think, oh,
- 55:02my dad wore this around his wrist for years.
- 55:04You know, it's just right. I have the watch that my
- 55:07grandfather got when he retired from a company that he had been
- 55:11at for, I think, 25 years. And at that point, you know,
- 55:15people stayed a long time and they were given a watch when
- 55:16they retired. And it doesn't even work.
- 55:19And I wear it for the same reason, because it's still an
- 55:21action to him. And it's, you know, family
- 55:24heirloom. And what's interesting about it
- 55:26is that it actually has pink. I mean, I think they're like
- 55:30rhinestones, but he was not a pink guy, so it's very funny
- 55:35that his watch has those on it. But I love pink, so it works
- 55:39out. I love.
- 55:40That amazing. What kind of watch is it?
- 55:42An acute. Accutronic, yes, yeah, yeah,
- 55:47very cool. Yeah, but yeah, I know what you
- 55:50mean. Like the the feeling of wearing
- 55:52a family heirloom like that is really cool.
- 55:55Yeah, I think as you get older too, just time takes on a
- 55:58completely different sort of relevance, right.
- 56:00And it's. Just a nice reminder.
- 56:02To get your ass in gear each day, right?
- 56:03I mean, it's just just something I never ever considered much as
- 56:07a younger person, right? Yeah, absolutely.
- 56:10And you know, anyone who loves mechanical things gets
- 56:13fascinated by the the dials and the the the portions and the
- 56:18style. But what's interesting to me is,
- 56:21you know, I mean, it's, it's a bit like cars, I guess, in that
- 56:25sometimes you think a car is going to fit you to a tee and
- 56:27then you get in and you're like, well, it's different.
- 56:30Like like the moonwalk, the Omega C, the moonwalk.
- 56:36I always thought I've got to have one of those.
- 56:37Like the, it's just the perfect watch, right?
- 56:39The chronographs, It's just iconic.
- 56:41It's, you know, Apollo missions and I put it on my wrist and I
- 56:44was like, oh, I don't, I don't know.
- 56:46It's not what I thought it would be.
- 56:47It just doesn't work with my wrist for some reason.
- 56:50Interesting, funny happens for sure.
- 56:52What about cars? Like what's the most bassem of
- 56:54cars right? Like you know, you know, new car
- 56:57maybe you could buy. New car, I mean, speaks to you.
- 57:00The 9/11 is still so annoyingly good.
- 57:02Like, yeah, yeah, it's, but they just, they, they, they keep
- 57:07nailing it. And you know, I'm in and out of
- 57:12a lot of stuff and just had a Ennio's Grenadier, which was
- 57:17fascinating to me because I don't feel like I need one in my
- 57:21life. But like, it really is an
- 57:25interesting car for me because I, I had a 92 Defender 200 TDI,
- 57:30so a diesel one that I bought in Italy.
- 57:33I drove over there and I imported it here and I drove it
- 57:36for a while over here. And it's in a way it's a
- 57:38spiritual successor to that because, you know, the guy tried
- 57:42to buy the factory got so he said, I'm just going to do it
- 57:46myself. And, and so it's an
- 57:52interpretation, you know, it's sort of like one man's version
- 57:55of a Defender and had a lot of fun with it, though it was
- 57:59really just wickedly good off road.
- 58:02I loved. Your video that you posted of
- 58:05going into, was it a river that you took it?
- 58:08Into Speaking of terrifying bad decisions, it came out fine, but
- 58:13I, I, it was in an off road park at hungry Valley and I thought,
- 58:17oh, this is sanitized. You know, it's not going to be
- 58:20too deep. It like water went over the hood
- 58:23like and it had no snorkels. So like I thought, oh, I could
- 58:28get stuck here. This could be really I could
- 58:30total this car. Between that and Stand by Me,
- 58:33where they've got the stick and they're poking ahead, you know?
- 58:36And and you know they drop. And then they're full of
- 58:38leeches. You know that's that's I can see
- 58:41you in a in an idios, though Grenadier.
- 58:43I I think they're so cool much in the same, you know way that a
- 58:45911 is cool, right. There's nothing else that looks
- 58:47like them. They're.
- 58:48So. Yeah, they're just the they.
- 58:50When you roll up in one, it says something about you, right?
- 58:53Or, and it's cool not even to say about you too, unlike,
- 58:56unlike 9 elevens in LA especially, they're not
- 58:59ubiquitous, which is, which is always special because I don't
- 59:03know, like some cars are great, but they're they're everywhere.
- 59:06And you think, you know, that I kind of like being my own
- 59:10person, you know, like, like everybody else is doing the same
- 59:16thing. I kind of won't be a rugged
- 59:17individualist or at least have the at least have the the
- 59:21illusion of it, you know, right? Well, something we talk about
- 59:25here a lot are defenders. I know we're all fans, and
- 59:29especially the Octa. And we were talking about
- 59:31writing about cars and watches, and you wrote an article for
- 59:35Chronic Caliber about getting to take the Octa on some roads in
- 59:40England. So I'd love to hear about that.
- 59:43And I thought it was interesting the way you wove the watches and
- 59:45the cars together in that article.
- 59:48But yeah, I'd love to hear about that European adventure.
- 59:51Well, thanks for reading I I always appreciate when somebody
- 59:55actually goes in and reads those pesky words.
- 59:58All the all. The effort that you put in.
- 1:00:02Yeah. I mean, my family and I have
- 1:00:04developed a little kind of tradition that we're trying to
- 1:00:07keep up every summer of working remotely at least a month
- 1:00:11somewhere in Europe, often Italy.
- 1:00:14Speaking of boringly predictable, I've challenged my
- 1:00:17wife to break that habit and she was really good.
- 1:00:20One summer we did. We started in Palermo, but then
- 1:00:24we went down to Sevilla and then Morocco.
- 1:00:28But last summer was England and it was an incredible opportunity
- 1:00:33to reach out to British car manufacturers and say, you know,
- 1:00:36hey, I'm going to be here for a month, like, can I drive some of
- 1:00:38your stuff? And so Land Rover provided
- 1:00:44Defender, Okta Bentley provided A Bentega and I flew to Munich
- 1:00:52for another trip that I had. I had to go to Bugatti and
- 1:00:54Mosheim. So flew to Munich and Rolls
- 1:00:57Royce provided a Ghost, so I had an.
- 1:01:00Amazing color if I do. Say so.
- 1:01:02Yeah, this blue. Stunning.
- 1:01:05Incredible blue. And the Germans, especially
- 1:01:09outside of the cities, are pretty staid, so talk about
- 1:01:13making waves. Their eyes were saucers.
- 1:01:16You know 'cause. It's at least in the pictures.
- 1:01:18It's like a bright periwinkle. Oh, you exactly.
- 1:01:21I just see that. Yeah, yeah, it's an incredible
- 1:01:24color. And so all these all these
- 1:01:28sensible Germans driving around in their golfs and they're
- 1:01:30they're they're, you know, they're small German sub
- 1:01:33compacts. And this ghost is doing 155 on
- 1:01:37the Audubon. Like amazing, incredible.
- 1:01:42And it feels like you're doing nothing.
- 1:01:43I mean, that car is so isolated. You really just feel like, you
- 1:01:47know, every once in a while you get the RS6 savant behind you
- 1:01:50flashing here. OK, go ahead, go, go do your 175
- 1:01:53or you got ended. But yeah, driving.
- 1:01:57So driving cars in in England is especially interesting because,
- 1:02:01you know, the infrastructure is so old and it's built sometimes
- 1:02:05hundreds of years ago. These these late tiny and cars
- 1:02:08are now really like super sized for the American market, which
- 1:02:12is kind of led to a global trend of being bigger than they need
- 1:02:15to be. And the defender feels really
- 1:02:18big there. And the Octa is wider and it's
- 1:02:21got huge tires and everything. So, you know, I find myself
- 1:02:25like, OK, I'm that guy, you know, everyone's talking their
- 1:02:29cute little Vox Falls and and Opal.
- 1:02:34Yeah. I mean, I I love the brand.
- 1:02:37I just wish the Octa was a little more like a little more
- 1:02:42brash, a little more like Jane. Like, I think visually it could
- 1:02:49stand a little more contrast. I think.
- 1:02:51Yeah, it is wide. But if there was a way to
- 1:02:54accentuate it, you know, like, like, look at the look at the
- 1:02:56Raptor like that. That looks like a mean truck.
- 1:03:00You know immediately that. It's weirdly refrain when you
- 1:03:05compare the refrain, when you compare the tooth off road, it's
- 1:03:09incredible. I mean, it drove it off road in
- 1:03:11South Africa and it was. Right.
- 1:03:14What was the launch like? Remarkable they do the best
- 1:03:18launches. I got to say I drove the OG the
- 1:03:22my last launch before the pandemic hit was the the
- 1:03:25defender, the new refresh, the brand new in Namibia and it was
- 1:03:31epic. I mean you know I blew out tires
- 1:03:35we got stuck. You know we did sand we did
- 1:03:38river crossings, we did so much cool stuff and saw all this
- 1:03:41wildlife and it was a true adventure.
- 1:03:44You know, they get to get these retired Camel Trophy guys and
- 1:03:47they like how how they're going to really test the cars or show
- 1:03:52us how the we can, how the cars hold up.
- 1:03:55And you know, there's always the other half of what I do, which
- 1:03:58is like, yeah, I get all the fun.
- 1:04:00Like, Oh yeah, like, look, it's a dream job.
- 1:04:02And then when you talk to somebody who's owned the car,
- 1:04:05then you get the true story of what it's actually like to own
- 1:04:08it. And sometimes it's not great.
- 1:04:12Yeah, the jokes are or the cliches are there because
- 1:04:15they're true. I mean, you know.
- 1:04:19I don't care. No, they're great, honestly,
- 1:04:22like the fact that the fact that over the air over the air
- 1:04:26updates exist now has changed the game for reliability and
- 1:04:29being able to fix things because before take it back to the
- 1:04:33dealership, have them repro computer that's trying to talk
- 1:04:35to the 5000 other computers. And you know, that's kind of the
- 1:04:39interesting thing about NES jumping back to it is like their
- 1:04:42whole philosophy is reductionist.
- 1:04:43So like the average car has like 150 ECU's and they have like 38
- 1:04:49and. Really know that?
- 1:04:50Wow. OK, yeah, so they, they, they
- 1:04:52really tried term it down and they've still been problematic.
- 1:04:55I mean, they still have their issues.
- 1:04:58My buddy Matthew Scott will wax poetic about his Grenadier
- 1:05:02having a lot of issues because he's finally gotten rid of it or
- 1:05:05he's getting rid of it. And, you know, he struggled.
- 1:05:07He did some things, you know, he lifted at an inch and 1/2 which
- 1:05:11which might have had something to do with the front driveline,
- 1:05:13not and the axle's not not lasting very long.
- 1:05:17But you know, and he's probably a not the average use case
- 1:05:22scenario. He's he's a power user, but
- 1:05:25every car has its its teething panes when they're new.
- 1:05:29Like build with impressive complex thing from scratch,
- 1:05:34thing is bound to need attention and and and fixing and and
- 1:05:38refinement. We're living in a golden age of
- 1:05:42options, right, for cars. I mean, we are so fortunate that
- 1:05:45cars like that exist, right? Much less Morgan still or you
- 1:05:49know, I mean, did all these super cars, these hyper cars,
- 1:05:53you know, the Nilu, you know, I mean, it's just like it's a
- 1:05:56spoil of riches if you're into cars.
- 1:05:58And speaking for them. Speaking of riches.
- 1:06:01I Speaking of, I just forgot that I drove a Morgan in the UK
- 1:06:04too. Did you OK?
- 1:06:06I wondered. Yeah.
- 1:06:07That's for talk about a perfect car for the location and I
- 1:06:10thought everyone would be jaded and like, you know, it's driving
- 1:06:12like a Chevy here in the US No, everyone you know, like it was
- 1:06:17it was neat. That's.
- 1:06:18Awesome. Well, are you a?
- 1:06:20No, we, we bumped into you at, at at Motolux this year and, you
- 1:06:25know, it was a little rain that night and saw, saw Morgan the
- 1:06:28new one and hadn't seen it. Went over and started talking to
- 1:06:31the guy who was wiping the rain off.
- 1:06:32Well, it was the CEO, you know, I mean, it's just, that's the
- 1:06:35kind of I love that it is. And yeah, and it's everything.
- 1:06:38You can't again, you can't, you can't, you know, you can't
- 1:06:40synthesize that, right? Like that is the real deal.
- 1:06:43And I just, I love everything about that company.
- 1:06:46So yeah. That's more of that and they've
- 1:06:49had years to develop and refine and yet they're still got to
- 1:06:52innovate because regulations and everything but and and and
- 1:06:57that's the thing they have in common with any of us is that
- 1:06:59BMW drivetrain, you know that that familiar shifter just being
- 1:07:03transferred. They get a different shifter.
- 1:07:05They're. Just eventually all of your
- 1:07:09BMWs. I know 8 speed is a great
- 1:07:12gearbox, you know? Yeah.
- 1:07:15It's like we need something different.
- 1:07:17Yeah, it's the first thing I see too when I get there.
- 1:07:22But it's a hard business, man. It's so hard to just like it's
- 1:07:26become easier to stand out, but it's still harder, you know, and
- 1:07:29like the, the you kind of really want a car to go and spend what
- 1:07:34it costs to buy a new car. Now the average cost is 50K and
- 1:07:38you know, always goes there and then it's obsolete in three
- 1:07:41years and it's half appreciated. And you know, it doesn't make a
- 1:07:44whole lot of logical sense, but we're Moss to the flame and we
- 1:07:47just keep this this cycle going because we love it.
- 1:07:50Unless unless you have a Cobra 2289, which why didn't.
- 1:07:54I. Mean. 73 Bronco and that that's
- 1:07:58the two course. It is.
- 1:08:00That's the ideal. I could absolutely make that
- 1:08:03work as my 2 car garage for sure.
- 1:08:05Well, so that is I love to ask people like what is if you could
- 1:08:08create your ultimate 2 car garage because we all talk about
- 1:08:11what's the two car solution? So what's Basm's two car
- 1:08:14solution? I had it for a fleeting moment.
- 1:08:17I mean, my problem is like I'm trying to cycle through all the
- 1:08:20cars that I want to own. So I can't.
- 1:08:21I'm not like Jay Leno. I can't have everything.
- 1:08:24Yeah, you can't just keep adding.
- 1:08:26I had AI had the the 63 Rover, which I still have and I'll
- 1:08:30probably never get rid of. But I had the 993 at the same
- 1:08:32time and like they were just like peas in the pod, you know,
- 1:08:38little sporty car, not blindingly fast, but really
- 1:08:41entertaining to drive and you know, kept you like kept you
- 1:08:45insulated if it rained and did all the things that a car should
- 1:08:47do. And then the silly always open
- 1:08:50air truck that leaks like a sieve.
- 1:08:52But it's so fun to drive and go off road.
- 1:08:55That to me was a good two car solution.
- 1:08:57Yeah, you've covered all the bases.
- 1:08:58That's. A very good solution.
- 1:09:01You're a grip. Oh gosh.
- 1:09:04Well, I think I said so someone asked me this the other day.
- 1:09:06Maybe it was you, Lindsay and I, I think I went with I, I've got
- 1:09:10one, I've got AGT 4 Porsche that I I will keep forever because
- 1:09:14it's just a wonderful thing. But I've always wanted, I've
- 1:09:17never had a gondevag and I I want one, maybe a vintage one.
- 1:09:21I really want a 2 door. If I had those two cars, that
- 1:09:25would be all I would ever, ever need.
- 1:09:27And I. You can tell I.
- 1:09:28Remember what you said? What did you say?
- 1:09:30So it was a defender Octa. OK.
- 1:09:33And then I know I'm trying to remember because I picked it was
- 1:09:37either the GT4 or it was a Cobra.
- 1:09:40It was something smaller, yeah, but fun because I could that
- 1:09:45covered like all the bases and then some.
- 1:09:48Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's something to that, like
- 1:09:50sports car, you know, SUV, you know?
- 1:09:53Yeah, I mean, it does. It covers all the bases, right?
- 1:09:55Well, and especially if you have like AG Wagon or a defender, you
- 1:09:58know, especially an Octa, you can go off roading if you want
- 1:10:01to too, and you can take your family.
- 1:10:03Yeah. Open top you.
- 1:10:04Know all the things? Yeah.
- 1:10:06Well, Speaking of the classic G wagon, I mean, Mercedes made the
- 1:10:08great mistake of when they launched, they relaunched the G
- 1:10:11wagon in 2018. I guess it was we go to the
- 1:10:14South of France and they have this massive off roading
- 1:10:17development area that we get to drive.
- 1:10:19They give you the classic cars to drive and you just fall in
- 1:10:23love with the classics. And you know, every time a car
- 1:10:26maker does that, it's like, oh, I'd like I can I just drive
- 1:10:29this? I'll.
- 1:10:30Just. The new one's great, though.
- 1:10:32But like, you know, like Volkswagen did this thing where
- 1:10:34we took ID fours out into the desert, but they also took Baja
- 1:10:38buggies. Yeah.
- 1:10:41I mean, there's no question what's going to be the favorite
- 1:10:43there. Come on, like you want to drive
- 1:10:46the toaster? Or do you want to drive the?
- 1:10:49Adventure machine, right? They forgot they were dealing
- 1:10:51with car people who are going. To be like this is.
- 1:10:53Much more engaging. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:56You realize the layers of insulation, right, that have
- 1:10:58been added, you know, the cars over the years between, you
- 1:11:01know, you and you know, in the powertrain and all that and it's
- 1:11:04just there's no question. And the boldness, though, also
- 1:11:07like the layers that lack, you know, like you think about like,
- 1:11:10Oh well, if I eat it, I'm just going to go right through the
- 1:11:13windshield. I mean, I did the Amelia without
- 1:11:16seatbelts. And trust me, a few times I
- 1:11:18thought this could end very, very poorly if the wrong thing
- 1:11:22happens. That's the whole analog of like,
- 1:11:25you know, professional football, right?
- 1:11:26Like as the helmets got more protective, the brain injuries,
- 1:11:30you know, got greater, right? Because you feel protected, you
- 1:11:32do more, you take more chances, right?
- 1:11:34It's that same. So true.
- 1:11:35Like self preservation? Like what A.
- 1:11:37Violence to do that, right to do that.
- 1:11:41Rock on wood motorcycle and you know.
- 1:11:44We didn't even scratch that surface I guess, you know, crack
- 1:11:48that nut the whole bike so. Tell us about this.
- 1:11:51Brough Superior S S 100. This is the the motorcycle, the
- 1:11:56type of motorcycle that Lawrence of Arabia famously saw his met
- 1:12:00his maker on that sad story there, but amazing bike.
- 1:12:05And I just I love the purity of motorcycles.
- 1:12:07It's like you and your surroundings and a machine and
- 1:12:11like you're just passing through space and just the air covers
- 1:12:15you, bathes you. It's it's so incredible.
- 1:12:18They're so great. And there's no, there's no
- 1:12:20filter. You know, there's like, yeah,
- 1:12:22they have electronics, but they're easy to turn off and
- 1:12:24they're not intrusive anyway. And, you know, you just, you
- 1:12:29cannot be on your phone. You can't be distracted.
- 1:12:32You know, you can't be distracted, but it's a bad idea.
- 1:12:34Yeah, right. It would not be.
- 1:12:36Recommended. And yeah, and every time you
- 1:12:38arrive safely, you feel like you've earned something.
- 1:12:40Like you. I made it.
- 1:12:43Especially in LA traffic. You're like, She did death
- 1:12:45again. Well.
- 1:12:47I really admire. I think the last time I saw you
- 1:12:50up at Newcomb's, you had ridden a motorcycle up Angela's Crest
- 1:12:54and I remember just being sort of awed by that because that is
- 1:12:58a that is an interesting proposition because.
- 1:13:01That is a driving Rd. When you think the ice has
- 1:13:05melted, sometimes it hasn't melted in in the shadowy
- 1:13:08corners, you know? So, yeah, one time I took a
- 1:13:12Harley up there and I will never do it in cold weather again
- 1:13:16because I just had a moment and I was fine.
- 1:13:19But it'll, you know, it's scares you.
- 1:13:22Yeah, it's. Hard to beat, you know, the cool
- 1:13:23factor of just riding up to some place and getting off a bike,
- 1:13:27right? You know, the weathers and
- 1:13:28everything. I mean, that's pretty hard to
- 1:13:29be, I think, you know, in a way every car is kind of chasing
- 1:13:31that ideal, right? It's, it's, it's the best thing.
- 1:13:35How old is too old to get into bikes?
- 1:13:37I'm 50I. My experience is very limited,
- 1:13:39but I I've always loved the idea.
- 1:13:41Never too old, but take a course, don't try to learn it
- 1:13:45yourself. Like go to go to a motorcycle
- 1:13:48safety foundation course or something like that.
- 1:13:50There's a lot of stuff you don't know, you don't know and you
- 1:13:54know, you grab the front brake too aggressively.
- 1:13:56You're going to, if you're going to go down corner, you know,
- 1:13:59there's little things like that. You grab too much rear brake,
- 1:14:01you'll have the same problem. But that's the beauty of it too,
- 1:14:05is you're so involved with the dynamics of the vehicle, like
- 1:14:08you're thinking of the contact patches, these two small contact
- 1:14:12patches, having so much power over what, where it's going and
- 1:14:16what you're doing in your lean angle.
- 1:14:18And are you breaking front or rear?
- 1:14:21You know, throttle becomes really critical because if you
- 1:14:23just give it a little too much, you go a little too wide, then
- 1:14:26that's a totally different path. You don't have the luxury of
- 1:14:29sliding around like you do in a car to earn limits.
- 1:14:33It's such a great thing now. Yeah.
- 1:14:35What's your bike of choice like? What's your go to?
- 1:14:38My prized possession. I have a 2001 Ducati Mike
- 1:14:43Halewood. So it's AMH 900 E Really catchy
- 1:14:46name, but it was a tribute bike to the Isle of Man TT comeback
- 1:14:50bike Atwood Rd. in the 78. But it's very modern.
- 1:14:54It's very wonky looking. It's so good looking.
- 1:14:57It's so good looking. I love design.
- 1:14:59And then my 2 bike solution is that I have that and then I have
- 1:15:03a Vespa, big bore Vespa that's 300 and I can just, it's so fun
- 1:15:10to hop on that for local trips and I kid loves to get dropped
- 1:15:13off to school in it. He's like that.
- 1:15:15It's not going to last forever because he's getting tall, but
- 1:15:18like he's the cool kid when he gets pulls up on a scooter,
- 1:15:21believe it or not. You're the cool dad, you know.
- 1:15:24I mean, yeah, you know, everybody.
- 1:15:25Well, yeah, behind the helmet, anyone can look cool.
- 1:15:28Great cosplay. That's why I.
- 1:15:32Keep insisting we take the Vespa.
- 1:15:35And then like I think. My daughter wish I would have a
- 1:15:37helmet sometimes when I dropped her off at school, but you know
- 1:15:40that's in a car so. But I've taken him on on
- 1:15:44motorcycles once or twice, and he was like, like, just had
- 1:15:47this, like, Daddy, can I ride a motorcycle?
- 1:15:51I'm like, let's let's just take this one step at a time.
- 1:15:56Let's not dive too far in. Like, let's get you focused
- 1:15:59first, yeah? Right, like when you are much,
- 1:16:01much older. Do as I say, not as I do.
- 1:16:04Yeah, exactly. Bring this back to cars again.
- 1:16:08So we had, do you know John Wiley from Haggerty?
- 1:16:10He's the guy that puts together this annual bull market list and
- 1:16:15it's gotten a lot of traction lately.
- 1:16:16And I just, I love the concept. And so ever since he's been on
- 1:16:19the show, we've asked our guests what your own bull market list.
- 1:16:24We've been calling it the bullshit market list, right,
- 1:16:26Because we don't want any copyright infringement.
- 1:16:29So these are the cars that you think will go up most in value
- 1:16:32over the next year. So if you were to pick two or
- 1:16:35three cars, what would be on your bullshit market list?
- 1:16:39Gosh, that's a really tough one because I feel like it's getting
- 1:16:44harder and harder to unearth these hidden gems that that have
- 1:16:49yet to be discovered. Like I was really big on the
- 1:16:53three OA GT4 Ferrari Dino before it went crazy and it I mean.
- 1:17:00Before everybody else was. Yeah, it didn't go like three O
- 1:17:038 crazy, but you know, like all of a sudden it became a thing.
- 1:17:06I was like I knew it. I still have hope in the Bentley
- 1:17:10turbo RI think that's just like a you know, Matt fair is not
- 1:17:16helping like he gave it a lot of hype a lot.
- 1:17:18So I think that lifted the waters a little bit, but I think
- 1:17:23more room to go. Similarly, Continental R,
- 1:17:28Continental T, they're a little pricier, but they're really
- 1:17:30special cars. Those Bentleys from the 90s are
- 1:17:32really special, criminally, criminally affordable right now
- 1:17:38and have been for a long time. And I don't even know if there
- 1:17:41will rise anytime soon, but Cadillac Alantes are like, it's
- 1:17:45a neat car, like pin Infarina bodies.
- 1:17:49They commissioned like 4 or 5740 sevens just to shuttle them back
- 1:17:53and forth to Detroit. So they went from Turin, they
- 1:17:57took the bodies, the completed bodies, stacked them into 740
- 1:18:00sevens, flew them to Detroit, and then flew those 740 sevens
- 1:18:04back with the, the the chassis back to Turin.
- 1:18:09Like cost no object, right? Yep, Yep.
- 1:18:12Just a bizarre. Story, right?
- 1:18:15Yeah, at least it's got a neat story.
- 1:18:17I mean, yeah, it looks, it looks a little dated, but it also
- 1:18:20looks kind of cool too. And the right colour.
- 1:18:22I I've always had a soft spot for them.
- 1:18:24Yeah, they're they're they're interesting cars.
- 1:18:27Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think they got lumped in with
- 1:18:30like the Maserati, Chrysler, TC, whatever, you know, for a long
- 1:18:33time. And even though they were, they
- 1:18:34were much those are. Unequipped.
- 1:18:37The. Opera window those.
- 1:18:39Are not on my list. Yeah.
- 1:18:42But the Alante, I am so glad to hear you say that that is, you
- 1:18:45know, all, all four I think are great answers and especially
- 1:18:48that last one. Alante is, is, yeah, I think
- 1:18:50it's I think it's time has has come, right.
- 1:18:52Yeah, and then like, and maybe this is on my brain because I'm
- 1:18:56helping a family friend sell his, but first Gen.
- 1:19:00AMG GT really criminally undervalued.
- 1:19:05Absolutely. What it's worth, and he knows
- 1:19:08what he paid for it and he's like, that's all it's worth
- 1:19:11really. I think it's a much more
- 1:19:14interesting car than the one that came after it.
- 1:19:16I really do. It's, it's really, I think it's
- 1:19:18a much more interesting car than the one that came after.
- 1:19:21Oh yeah, engineering wise, I mean like they, they tried to
- 1:19:25broaden the market so they added rear seat, got rid of the
- 1:19:28transaxle and they made it bigger and heavier and then they
- 1:19:31put a battery in and all of a sudden it's, you know, it's a
- 1:19:33very different animal. It's still a great driver.
- 1:19:36The new, the performance is like whoa.
- 1:19:39Like it's it's surprisingly good for its weight.
- 1:19:43I mean, part of that, you know, the trickery of of technology,
- 1:19:47but there's a purity to the the first Gen.
- 1:19:49Car is, it's like it was really a disciplined approach to try to
- 1:19:54out out 911 the 9/11. Yes, but yeah, it's a very
- 1:19:59different car to drive and you feel different behind the wheel.
- 1:20:02You've got the long hood. You drive in a different way and
- 1:20:05I love. That the Porsche that makes it
- 1:20:07feel completely different. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:20:10You're right. Like it kind of looked like it
- 1:20:12when it came out, but then when you drive it, you're like, Oh
- 1:20:14yeah, no, it's, it's different, yeah.
- 1:20:16No great answers. You know your stuff, obviously
- 1:20:19you know those are those are the answers of someone who really
- 1:20:22knows so. I'm just trying.
- 1:20:23We're all just trying. We all are.
- 1:20:26We all are. I know we're at an hour and 20
- 1:20:29minutes. We probably need to wrap this
- 1:20:30up. Be respectful of your time,
- 1:20:32Abasim, but we're going to try something a little different
- 1:20:35tonight, if that's OK. Five quick rapid fire questions
- 1:20:38for you. Just shout out the first thing
- 1:20:40that comes to mind for each, OK? OK.
- 1:20:42So Bass and WASA if you've done it all and then some, Which car
- 1:20:46company puts on the best destination press event?
- 1:20:50Best destination press events are a tie between Mercedes-Benz
- 1:20:56and Land Rover. Land Rover chooses the most
- 1:21:01amazing off road destinations that you could dream of, you
- 1:21:05know, bucket list like Skelton coast of Namibia.
- 1:21:09You can relive your camel trophy fantasies and you know, you
- 1:21:14could be be that true adventurer who may or may not be able to
- 1:21:19bring the car back in one piece. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:22Mercedes just their execution is always flawless.
- 1:21:25They always just do such, such epic aspirational trips.
- 1:21:31You know, if you want to spend the night on a yacht and Ibiza,
- 1:21:34like they have you covered, you know, if you want to drive on a
- 1:21:38racetrack and the drive on the autobahn and then sleep in a
- 1:21:41castle, you know, they figured out a way to yeah, they they
- 1:21:46have been at this game long enough where that they started
- 1:21:49when cost was no object. And obviously the industry is
- 1:21:52contracted and people aren't spending what they used to on
- 1:21:55these kinds of things, but they they do their best to stick to
- 1:21:58that lavish formula of of like blowing your mind.
- 1:22:02I love it. I love it.
- 1:22:03OK, one more three-way tie. Yeah.
- 1:22:06Please. The international Rolls Royce
- 1:22:09programs are incredible, I've got to say.
- 1:22:12Like. Oh, I bet.
- 1:22:16Yeah. I mean, that's great.
- 1:22:17There's stateside stuff, a little more anonymous, but like
- 1:22:21when they go international for the global launches, pretty top
- 1:22:24notch. OK.
- 1:22:25All right, Lindsay, you and I need to get on all three of
- 1:22:28those lists. OK, moving on.
- 1:22:32Cost no object. What's the one car, new or old,
- 1:22:36that you'd buy tomorrow? New or old?
- 1:22:40Well, for going old, I mean, the no brainer is McLaren F1.
- 1:22:43It's OK, yeah, let's talk about a car that I wish I could have
- 1:22:46like called the values on back in the day, but.
- 1:22:50That had been on your BS market list.
- 1:22:52Yeah, I mean, there's a story about about Weiner, Bruce
- 1:22:57Weiner, who was the micro car collector who had.
- 1:23:01Met him? Yeah, down in Georgia.
- 1:23:03Yeah, I stumbled upon his museum.
- 1:23:05I was driving back when I had a 9/11 SC and I was driving it
- 1:23:10while waiting for my wife to finish working on a movie.
- 1:23:12And I was literally man of leisure driving my car.
- 1:23:14That was not valuable back then. And I pulled over and I
- 1:23:19introduced myself to him and he gave me a tour and I ended up
- 1:23:21writing about it. But he had a McLaren F1 and was
- 1:23:27disappointed that it cost so much to keep up even when he
- 1:23:30didn't drive it. And why am I spending fifty KA
- 1:23:34year on this car even if I don't drive it, because everything
- 1:23:37times out on it and he sold it so early.
- 1:23:40Like, you know, you could get them for under 1,000,000 back in
- 1:23:43the day and now the rest is history.
- 1:23:46But it's not about the fact that worth 2025 million.
- 1:23:49It's about the fact best car ever made.
- 1:23:50I mean that I would, you know, I just want to drive one like I
- 1:23:54just want to drive on a block. We all, we all do I'm not.
- 1:23:58Asking much? Yeah, I'm a simple man.
- 1:24:04And it's funny about that microcar museum.
- 1:24:06We drove down from Chicago, a buddy and me, to see it on the
- 1:24:09last day that it was open before it closed.
- 1:24:11We also. Remember saw the Georgia
- 1:24:13Guidestones that day. If you know what those are,
- 1:24:15neither 1 you know exists any longer.
- 1:24:18So that was a fun day. But that was an amazing treasure
- 1:24:22trove of of these micro cars and had I known about the F1 I would
- 1:24:26have hung out a little longer I guess.
- 1:24:28But that's, well, honey driven 1.
- 1:24:30I asked him like you ever like he was telling me like he'd like
- 1:24:33one time the the featured market at Pebble Beach was was one of
- 1:24:37his micro car brands. I can't remember 1.
- 1:24:39So he took it and it made me ask him like do other collectors
- 1:24:43ever give you crap about because I didn't see if any of his
- 1:24:46exotic cars, but he's like, do they ever give you crap about
- 1:24:48your micro cars? He goes, well, I mean I've got
- 1:24:52an Enzo, I've got an F1 and I've got a blah, blah, blah.
- 1:24:56So not really. I stand corrected.
- 1:25:00They know not to trifle with me. Good.
- 1:25:03Good answer. I recall he had it was the
- 1:25:05double bubble. Dumb fortune right?
- 1:25:08Wasn't. That yeah, exactly.
- 1:25:10Which is just. You wonder how people make their
- 1:25:12money or end up with their money.
- 1:25:13That was interesting. OK, moving on.
- 1:25:15Because these are rapid fire. What's one thing about you that
- 1:25:19would surprise us? One thing about me that would
- 1:25:23surprise you. Is no pressure.
- 1:25:27Yeah, that's, that's an interesting one.
- 1:25:29That's a good think about this for a second.
- 1:25:31Are you going to edit this later?
- 1:25:32Yeah. Absolutely.
- 1:25:33You can also just make something up like you know, your
- 1:25:35professional curler or something that we've right now, right?
- 1:25:40Oh gosh, what was speaking? Of chewing gum.
- 1:25:42I have an amazing collection. Right here under the desk.
- 1:25:51We can. We can skip that one.
- 1:25:54Let me, let me have a moment. Yeah, I might come circle back
- 1:25:59to that. One.
- 1:25:59OK, OK, so you said you are a big music guy.
- 1:26:03What? What's your poison like?
- 1:26:05What? What are you into?
- 1:26:06Is it the stuff from when you were younger?
- 1:26:09Is there new stuff you like? What's what would you be
- 1:26:12listening to? I have super eclectic tastes.
- 1:26:16It's like I grew up listening to Sting the police.
- 1:26:23Peter Gabriel, Like the funky 70s Peter Gabriel, Not the yeah
- 1:26:27yeah yeah yeah and and and Jennifer stuff.
- 1:26:29Without Frontiers. And Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I grew
- 1:26:34up on that. I love a good concert
- 1:26:36experience. And for that reason, like I saw
- 1:26:41Sting Peter Gabriel show and and they're both great, but Sting is
- 1:26:45really just such a great, engaging performer.
- 1:26:49Didn't get too much into the 90s stuff, but like, you know, I
- 1:26:52liked seal back in the day and Dave Matthews has been a
- 1:26:58mainstay. Like it's such a experience to
- 1:27:01see him live and he just continues to deliver.
- 1:27:05He's so good their. Shows are good even if you
- 1:27:07don't. I mean who wouldn't like the
- 1:27:10music? But even if you don't like their
- 1:27:11music going in, the show is so good I think you come out a fan
- 1:27:15anyway. Yeah.
- 1:27:16And you know, my, it's funny because in college, one of the
- 1:27:19first tours, my buddy said, come see Dave Matthews with me.
- 1:27:23And I said, oh, I heard him on the radio.
- 1:27:24I'm not crazy about him, but, you know, give it a shot.
- 1:27:27And when we went, it was like under the table and dreaming.
- 1:27:29It was like that that early. It was so good.
- 1:27:33I was like, damn, I was going to miss this.
- 1:27:35And. That was my experience too.
- 1:27:37Like I knew a few of the songs, but I was certainly not like,
- 1:27:41wouldn't have gone to the effort to go to a concert.
- 1:27:43And I got invited and came out just going well.
- 1:27:47I'm a fan for life now. Yeah, and you know, some bands
- 1:27:50it's it's like happens happens to me still.
- 1:27:52Like, you know, I thought Postal Service and and Death Cap Beauty
- 1:27:56were were good. I like the music.
- 1:27:59Whatever, they're fine. But when I went to their show, I
- 1:28:01was like, I was like, this is like like life changing.
- 1:28:04Like it was such a good performance.
- 1:28:07It was amazing. And and I love how music can
- 1:28:09come alive for you like that. Like when I was like I was in
- 1:28:12Hollywood in the in the 90s, like, you know, we'd go see
- 1:28:16Aimee Mann perform at Largo with John Bryan.
- 1:28:20And, you know, when I worked in music, like I got to meet all
- 1:28:23these people. I met Fiona Apple early on.
- 1:28:25I got really into her music and, you know, nowadays, like I, my
- 1:28:3014 year old, like turns me on to a lot of stuff.
- 1:28:33And it's like, OK, Chapel Roan, there's something there.
- 1:28:36I get it. He's got a crush on Sabrina
- 1:28:38Carpenter. Her music's pretty, you know,
- 1:28:42But I like trying to stay open. Like during the pandemic, my
- 1:28:44wife was like, I want to listen to different music.
- 1:28:47Because she was raised on classical music.
- 1:28:49She started listening to Charlie Puth and we went and saw him and
- 1:28:53it was like me, her and like every like 14 year old girl and
- 1:28:57her mom. But he puts on a great show and
- 1:29:01he finally got some high visibility, you know, exposure
- 1:29:05with the the Super Bowl. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:07Really. Like, I never understood bad Bad
- 1:29:10Bunny, but when I saw him perform, I was like, holy crap.
- 1:29:13There's really something incredible here, you know?
- 1:29:16Yeah, right. Agree.
- 1:29:17Agree. No, I I'm glad you're a music
- 1:29:19guy. It's kind of like, you know, if
- 1:29:21you're not into music, it's kind of like, you know, I'm not, I
- 1:29:23don't like dogs, right. I mean, so what's wrong with
- 1:29:25you? Right?
- 1:29:25You know, it's sort of the, you know, the, the, I don't know,
- 1:29:28the signifier of a, a well-rounded, you know,
- 1:29:30individual in. My eyes.
- 1:29:31Thank you. Yeah.
- 1:29:32And, you know, I I love discovering new things And.
- 1:29:34And my kid is more obsessed with Hans Zimmer.
- 1:29:37Oh, really? That's.
- 1:29:39Fun after Dune and then, you know, all the other movies that
- 1:29:43I introduced him to after that. But so we're going to see a Hans
- 1:29:46Zimmer concert, Candlelight concert, Yeah.
- 1:29:50And Sunday. Yeah.
- 1:29:51So stuff like that. Like I love expanding the
- 1:29:54repertoire. Yep.
- 1:29:54And keeping it that's. Really cool good music is good
- 1:29:56music. Right.
- 1:29:57Yeah, well, like you said, like getting to see them, you know,
- 1:30:01like I believe that I saw Death Cab for Cutie at AK Rock Weenie
- 1:30:04Roast back in the day. You know, if you know, you know.
- 1:30:08Oh yeah, I was a big. K Rock kid growing up,
- 1:30:10especially in high school like I listened to.
- 1:30:12Nothing but but Kevin and Bean in the morning and yes, and we
- 1:30:19we could talk for hours. Yeah, it's such a moment in
- 1:30:21time. Again, I know well, so last but
- 1:30:24not. Least if you were not in the
- 1:30:26profession that you are in, what would you be doing?
- 1:30:30I'd be directing movies I love, visual stories I love.
- 1:30:35Writing them and bringing them to life.
- 1:30:39And, you know, I've focused on cars and I love it.
- 1:30:42But moving people through visuals is, is something I'm
- 1:30:51just in love with, you know, that that dream.
- 1:30:54Yeah. Well, and it's cool that you get
- 1:30:57to do a version of that with your production company.
- 1:30:59So you're still. Keeping a finger in that world,
- 1:31:02Absolutely. Yeah, Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:31:05Yeah. Well, we won't keep you any
- 1:31:08longer tonight, so tell the people where they can find.
- 1:31:11You on social media until we can have you back to continue the
- 1:31:14conversation. It's all at Bassem wasa, so do
- 1:31:19that and. You'll find me mostly on
- 1:31:20Instagram, but yeah, it's been so great talking to you guys.
- 1:31:24This is just like, you know, we we just need to meet somewhere
- 1:31:27and do this again, like and and even just have a good time,
- 1:31:31right? Like put our phones away.
- 1:31:32What would that be like? There we go.
- 1:31:35I just say. When just say when I'd love to.
- 1:31:38No, we've we've loved having you.
- 1:31:39Obviously we could keep talking for much longer.
- 1:31:41So we will do that. At a later date.
- 1:31:43But we really appreciate you joining us.
- 1:31:46And to our audience, thank you so much for joining us.
