- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the almost famous podcast with iHeartRadio.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Almost famous the og podcast. We are coming to you
- 0:08Speaker 2: right now from Carmel by the Sea and it is
- 0:12Speaker 2: the third or fourth annual Almost Famous Golf Outing starring
- 0:17Speaker 2: and featuring Ben Higgins. Ben is not here. Ben is
- 0:22Speaker 2: too busy having children. He's in the midst of.
- 0:25Speaker 3: The byproduct of love.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It is. It is the Bachelor and amen, right, that's
- 0:30Speaker 1: what shoots for. So he's he's getting ready.
- 0:33Speaker 2: To deliver any day. He and Jess are getting ready
- 0:36Speaker 2: to deliver any day. He's very, very excited about it.
- 0:38Speaker 2: But I thankfully am joined by, in my opinion, the
- 0:42Speaker 2: greatest Bachelor of the franchise has ever known, my main man,
- 0:46Speaker 2: Andrew Fires.
- 0:47Speaker 4: It is good to be here with you, Bob, to
- 0:48Speaker 4: be here to me and back again in Carmel.
- 0:51Speaker 3: This is actually my old stomping grounds.
- 0:53Speaker 4: I went to high school right down the road from here,
- 0:55Speaker 4: so this is like old home week for me.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I will say this.
- 0:58Speaker 2: So last year we got to walk the course a
- 1:00Speaker 2: little bit together, and walking the course with you is
- 1:03Speaker 2: like nothing I've ever experienced in my life.
- 1:05Speaker 1: And you know, it's just you have this way.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Of delivering things that are just like mind blowing and
- 1:11Speaker 2: you're like, oh, yeah, well, I you know, my grandpa
- 1:13Speaker 2: used to own that those two houses right there, So
- 1:15Speaker 2: I spent a lot of time.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Round across the street and playing.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I was like, we're walking Pebble Beach, Like this is amazing,
- 1:20Speaker 2: and uh, I mean having that kind of upbringing in
- 1:23Speaker 2: this beautiful town, of beautiful surroundings, you had to just
- 1:27Speaker 2: be Did you realize how lucky you were at that?
- 1:29Speaker 3: Absolutely?
- 1:29Speaker 4: I mean probably not not really. I mean that hindsight,
- 1:32Speaker 4: you know, definitely clarifies things. But Carmel is such an
- 1:37Speaker 4: amazing little, you know town city right on the on
- 1:41Speaker 4: the water, you know, host to the the AT and T,
- 1:44Speaker 4: which is coming up here this weekend. But it's such
- 1:48Speaker 4: a great backdrop to have a reunion and to be
- 1:51Speaker 4: here with you and Amy. You know that has gotten
- 1:54Speaker 4: us together here. I mean you this is your third
- 1:56Speaker 4: or fourth I've been coming here for fifteen years. I
- 1:57Speaker 4: guess you just never getting invited or whatever.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Yeah, oh no, thank you.
- 2:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I when I said third and fourth, I didn't realize
- 2:02Speaker 1: that that many.
- 2:03Speaker 3: All the time we're all here.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Yeah, no, you know, I think this is my my
- 2:09Speaker 2: third annual. The first year I remember you. You guys
- 2:14Speaker 2: called me and I was in Mexico with my family
- 2:16Speaker 2: and I was so I had such fun you were here.
- 2:18Speaker 3: That was the best one that makes perfect me miss
- 2:23Speaker 3: a little bit, that.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Makes perfect sense. Yeah, and then Harrison was here with
- 2:26Speaker 2: us last year as well. Of course, Ben, what I
- 2:30Speaker 2: do remember, uh, you know, pretty vividly of my first
- 2:33Speaker 2: year here was I was the youngest I'm sorry, the
- 2:37Speaker 2: oldest person here. In fact, I remember being I was
- 2:41Speaker 2: with like Kaylin and Dean Blake and Giannina and like
- 2:45Speaker 2: so and but I was like, wow, okay, so I
- 2:47Speaker 2: was clearly the you know, they brought me here to chaperon.
- 2:50Speaker 3: They just needed someone to drive.
- 2:55Speaker 2: You can buy beer for the party, And I'm like,
- 2:56Speaker 2: I guess that's me. This year, however, completely opposite.
- 3:01Speaker 4: We are.
- 3:01Speaker 2: You and I are the Spring Chickens, and we are
- 3:05Speaker 2: bringing it up with the Golden after Dark Party.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Which is such a such a great evolution for you know,
- 3:12Speaker 4: the series and the and the and the the whole
- 3:15Speaker 4: like the Bachelor Family to to open it up, and
- 3:19Speaker 4: I'm actually really excited to get to know some of
- 3:21Speaker 4: these people that I've seen on TV and you read
- 3:24Speaker 4: about them, but to go and spend a little bit
- 3:26Speaker 4: of time with them. You know, when they're you know,
- 3:27Speaker 4: kind of the guard is down, is when you actually
- 3:29Speaker 4: learn the most.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Honest it is. That's why we're gonna be feeding them
- 3:31Speaker 1: cocktails tonight. We have already talked about. We got a
- 3:33Speaker 1: little game plan.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Yep, there is a tequila luge that's a quarter mile long,
- 3:37Speaker 4: so we'll see what happens here.
- 3:39Speaker 1: We're just gonna keep a steady poor going, you know.
- 3:41Speaker 2: And but yeah, I've gotten to meet a couple of them,
- 3:43Speaker 2: not all of them met Joan and Chock. Uh.
- 3:47Speaker 5: You know.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Joan of course was a golden bachelorette, and then Chock
- 3:49Speaker 2: was the man left standing at the end there. He
- 3:52Speaker 2: is a super cool guy. He and Joan just seem
- 3:56Speaker 2: like they fit right. It's kind of like the whole
- 3:57Speaker 2: trist and Ryan thing. You like, look at these two people,
- 3:59Speaker 2: You're like, yeah, they make perfect sense, right, And Joan
- 4:02Speaker 2: and Chak are like that. And I agree with you though.
- 4:04Speaker 2: It's a great evolution of the franchise that needed to
- 4:06Speaker 2: get back off the skids because there was a while
- 4:09Speaker 2: there where I kind of quit watching, really I did,
- 4:12Speaker 2: because I wanted to know enough about it when someone
- 4:15Speaker 2: would ask me. But I was also like, man, I
- 4:17Speaker 2: just don't want to see people fighting, right, I just
- 4:19Speaker 2: don't you know, that just doesn't do.
- 4:20Speaker 4: It, no, I think, And that's what I think has
- 4:21Speaker 4: always been the like the magic of the Bachelors is
- 4:25Speaker 4: always like the desire to see somebody end up happy. Yeah,
- 4:28Speaker 4: I mean there's always going to be tears, there's always
- 4:30Speaker 4: going to be those moments that someone's heart broken, but
- 4:32Speaker 4: that's not that's that's a part of it. But I
- 4:35Speaker 4: think the reason that that it's that it's always had
- 4:37Speaker 4: its magic is because everyone's rooting for a happy ending, right,
- 4:41Speaker 4: and whether that's to first love or it might be
- 4:45Speaker 4: later on in life, Like, no matter what it is,
- 4:47Speaker 4: you're always rooting for love. And I think that's why
- 4:49Speaker 4: Bachelor Nation is so strong. I think that's why people
- 4:51Speaker 4: follow the show religiously, because everyone has the same kind
- 4:55Speaker 4: of commonality, which is like you want to see it
- 4:58Speaker 4: turn out well.
- 4:58Speaker 3: You're not hoping someone to fail.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Like like a lot of reality shows like American Idol
- 5:03Speaker 4: or whatever else, the most popular shows were always centered
- 5:05Speaker 4: around the biggest failures, the biggest flops. And I always
- 5:09Speaker 4: had this like pain, like I don't want to see
- 5:11Speaker 4: somebody embarrass themselves now. And I don't want to see
- 5:13Speaker 4: somebody laugh at somebody that's doing what they want to
- 5:16Speaker 4: do or believe they can do, and then get laughed at.
- 5:20Speaker 4: And that's the punchline of the show. I want the
- 5:22Speaker 4: not the punch on the show. I want like the
- 5:24Speaker 4: like the the climax of the show to be like, oh,
- 5:27Speaker 4: look at they're happy, right, And that's.
- 5:28Speaker 2: And the show has had a lot of those success
- 5:31Speaker 2: stories over the years. I mean, not not as many
- 5:34Speaker 2: as as I'm sure they hoped for in the beginning,
- 5:36Speaker 2: you know, but people tried.
- 5:38Speaker 4: But in that I think there's this unrealistic expectation that
- 5:41Speaker 4: every relationship is going to end with that, you know,
- 5:46Speaker 4: that marriage and the babies and the and the happily
- 5:49Speaker 4: ever after like the Ryan and the Trista and whatever else.
- 5:51Speaker 3: I mean, you can speak from experience. I can speak
- 5:54Speaker 3: from experience.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I don't think that my my you know, that my
- 5:57Speaker 4: experience in the Bachelor was a failure because I you know,
- 6:00Speaker 4: didn't have that happily ever after. I thought it was
- 6:02Speaker 4: an amazing experience and I learned so much about myself.
- 6:05Speaker 4: I think it made me a better person. I think
- 6:08Speaker 4: I was able to ask myself a lot of questions
- 6:09Speaker 4: about what I wanted in life, and it just was
- 6:12Speaker 4: answered with a different person, But the questions were the same,
- 6:15Speaker 4: and what I got out of it I think shape
- 6:18Speaker 4: me at least a little bit for the personality.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I think it's great that you say that, because I
- 6:22Speaker 2: totally agree with you. I mean, we were both at
- 6:25Speaker 2: pivotal times in our life, you know. I mean, do
- 6:27Speaker 2: you think we were like at a different time though
- 6:28Speaker 2: it was a little more of a kinder, gentler I
- 6:31Speaker 2: think environment around this show, like people you know, were
- 6:33Speaker 2: still you know, chirping at you and everything else. But
- 6:36Speaker 2: social media didn't exist, so we didn't have a lot
- 6:38Speaker 2: of negative pressures coming from random people that didn't know us,
- 6:41Speaker 2: you know, and there was that kind of stuff that
- 6:43Speaker 2: that wasn't making us feel bad about ourselves and things.
- 6:47Speaker 4: But I mean, I think it's so experimental. I guess
- 6:49Speaker 4: that's the best way when people have asked me about it.
- 6:51Speaker 4: When I was on, it was experimental, like nobody quite
- 6:54Speaker 4: knew how it was going to end, and so everybody
- 6:57Speaker 4: was kind of hoping for the best, cautious for the worst.
- 7:00Speaker 4: But there was this like optimism around it, and not
- 7:04Speaker 4: only with people that were on the show, participants or
- 7:08Speaker 4: whatever you want to call them, but I think for
- 7:09Speaker 4: the outcome for people watching, it was just like this,
- 7:11Speaker 4: like enthusiasm and optimism for like, this is what could happen,
- 7:15Speaker 4: and I hope it does.
- 7:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I remember rooting for you guys so much, and then
- 7:29Speaker 2: obviously when you didn't work out, I and you, you
- 7:33Speaker 2: and Havana got together. I was like, oh my god.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Then I was really rooting for you because I had
- 7:37Speaker 2: had a chance to meet her at something and thought
- 7:39Speaker 2: she was lovely. And then I met you of course already,
- 7:42Speaker 2: and you guys got and I didn't even know you
- 7:43Speaker 2: guys were together.
- 7:44Speaker 1: At first, and then I was like, oh my, I
- 7:45Speaker 1: know where. I was like, this is amazing.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Oh no another episode yah yah yeah, that that's another
- 7:52Speaker 4: show timely No, but it was.
- 7:54Speaker 2: It was one of those things where you know, I
- 7:55Speaker 2: think then I remember like meeting meeting up with the
- 7:58Speaker 2: two of you, we went out to dinner when when
- 7:59Speaker 2: I was in La with Warren and we went out
- 8:02Speaker 2: to dinner and just had a great time, and I'm like,
- 8:04Speaker 2: I love this whole thing.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Like it was.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I think the show's gotten back to that. I think
- 8:08Speaker 2: the golden I don't even know what you call it,
- 8:11Speaker 2: the golden Eric, golden era. I like it the golden
- 8:15Speaker 2: era of the show. I think it has gotten us
- 8:16Speaker 2: back to that, and it's like a feel good show again.
- 8:19Speaker 2: People are wanting to get along, like I remember being
- 8:22Speaker 2: a Trista's season The Bachelorette, which was a unique experience too,
- 8:26Speaker 2: loving the guys. I was on the show with absolutely
- 8:29Speaker 2: loving them, and then.
- 8:29Speaker 3: We're a little word that you loved them too much.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a lot of there's there's a whole other
- 8:34Speaker 4: like kind of conversation we could have about whether you
- 8:36Speaker 4: were there for Trista or every other dude.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I was there for the buddy.
- 8:41Speaker 2: I do remember Trista coming home one night and I
- 8:44Speaker 2: had not gone on a date with her that day.
- 8:47Speaker 1: She comes home and say, no, I didn't. I didn't
- 8:50Speaker 1: turn her down. I didn't.
- 8:51Speaker 2: I was like, you know, I'd rather stay here with
- 8:52Speaker 2: the boys now I was. I didn't get invited.
- 8:54Speaker 1: On this one.
- 8:55Speaker 2: And she came back and the house is a mess
- 8:58Speaker 2: and people are falling apart, you know, drunk, and she's like, uh,
- 9:03Speaker 2: why is it When I go on a date when
- 9:05Speaker 2: you're on it. I come home everyone's reading the Bible.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I go on a date with you not on it.
- 9:09Speaker 2: I come home to a frat pop. I'm like, well,
- 9:12Speaker 2: what am I supposed to cry? These are my fifteen
- 9:13Speaker 2: new best friends. But yeah, it was such an awesome
- 9:16Speaker 2: experience and it kind of informed me when I when
- 9:18Speaker 2: I was the Bachelor, I wanted it to be, you know,
- 9:21Speaker 2: the way your show had been and the way that
- 9:23Speaker 2: Tristia's show had been, where it seemed like everyone actually
- 9:26Speaker 2: got along and liked each other. And I was like,
- 9:28Speaker 2: I need that, you know. I don't want it to
- 9:30Speaker 2: go down a path I can't manage.
- 9:32Speaker 4: But there's an inevitable part of I think the viewership
- 9:35Speaker 4: that wants to see behind the curtain of the locker room,
- 9:39Speaker 4: you know, whether that's the sorority house or the locker room.
- 9:41Speaker 4: They want to see kind of what, you know, what
- 9:43Speaker 4: happens when you know that person isn't there and that
- 9:47Speaker 4: group of guys or that group of women are you know,
- 9:51Speaker 4: are kind of backbiting and positioning, and so that's kind
- 9:56Speaker 4: of a necessary part of this to be able to
- 9:58Speaker 4: put the whole story together. Yeah, also to be able
- 10:00Speaker 4: to measure the authenticity of all the participants as well.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Yeah, you start realizing, you know, and I mean, it's
- 10:07Speaker 2: it's such an overused cliche term and it drives me
- 10:10Speaker 2: crazy that you know who's there for the right reasons
- 10:11Speaker 2: types of things, and people are always saying, you know,
- 10:13Speaker 2: what are the right reasons for going on a dating
- 10:15Speaker 2: game show?
- 10:15Speaker 1: I'm like, it's a really good question.
- 10:17Speaker 2: I don't know who they are, but you start realizing
- 10:19Speaker 2: which people are actually there for that person and which
- 10:20Speaker 2: people are there to kind of springboard themselves. So all right, well, anyway,
- 10:24Speaker 2: we're here this week. What are you hoping to get
- 10:27Speaker 2: out of this whole thing? I mean, you drove a
- 10:28Speaker 2: long way, You've had a lot going on, you gave
- 10:31Speaker 2: up a lot of your time with your family to
- 10:33Speaker 2: be here. Obviously, I think it's to play golf with me.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just to play golf with you. So, so
- 10:38Speaker 4: my wife was supposed to be here with us this weekend.
- 10:40Speaker 3: For this week.
- 10:41Speaker 1: She got a job.
- 10:42Speaker 4: She's been modeling, so she booked a job so couldn't
- 10:45Speaker 4: be here. And I remember I was I was very
- 10:48Speaker 4: anxious on Saturday or Sunday, and I called you and
- 10:51Speaker 4: I was like, Bob, I got a deal closing this week,
- 10:54Speaker 4: Vona's not going to be there, you know. And like
- 10:56Speaker 4: it's funny how like daily life can get you so
- 10:59Speaker 4: so ways and blind to like you just focus on
- 11:03Speaker 4: what's just right in front of you, and you just
- 11:04Speaker 4: kind of call me down. You're like, we're gonna go
- 11:06Speaker 4: play golf, We're gonna have some nice dinners. We're gonna
- 11:09Speaker 4: we're gonna hang out with like this cool group of people.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Amy's putting this whole thing together. And I was like,
- 11:14Speaker 4: wait one, am I yes, of course, like and these
- 11:17Speaker 4: core memories that I've had over the last couple of
- 11:19Speaker 4: years of this particular event are so important to me.
- 11:22Speaker 4: And so yeah, I did high tail it from Santa
- 11:25Speaker 4: Barbara shot up the one on one, probably a little
- 11:27Speaker 4: quicker than I should have. I may have had a
- 11:30Speaker 4: you know, a couple of quick breaks in the side
- 11:31Speaker 4: of the freeway to h before I got here. But
- 11:35Speaker 4: I'm I'm excited to go and kind of reconnect with
- 11:39Speaker 4: my experience year twenty one years ago something like that,
- 11:43Speaker 4: to be able to like hear somebody else's perspective of
- 11:47Speaker 4: it and a perspective that I really haven't heard, which
- 11:49Speaker 4: is this old this other generation that's also having this
- 11:53Speaker 4: same experience. I mean, the butterflies that you get when
- 11:55Speaker 4: you see somebody, the nervousness that you come out of
- 11:58Speaker 4: the limo, like all these things. I don't care if
- 12:01Speaker 4: you're you know, twenty one or eighty one. That feeling
- 12:04Speaker 4: doesn't change. It's a different perspective, but that feeling doesn't change.
- 12:07Speaker 4: And you're vulnerable, you're optimistic, you're hopeful, all these things.
- 12:13Speaker 4: And so I'm I'm interested to get an account of
- 12:17Speaker 4: what these people have gone through in their perspective, and
- 12:21Speaker 4: it'll I think it would. It's going to shape my
- 12:23Speaker 4: opinion and my perspective my own experience.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Sure, Oh no, I love that.
- 12:27Speaker 2: I think that's a great attitude to have in this
- 12:28Speaker 2: And I will tell you this, the one thing I've
- 12:30Speaker 2: really loved about getting to know the Golden Era people
- 12:36Speaker 2: is that they didn't have an agenda other than.
- 12:39Speaker 1: What the hell?
- 12:39Speaker 3: Right?
- 12:40Speaker 1: You know? It was really the truth. They're just like, oh,
- 12:42Speaker 1: what the hell?
- 12:42Speaker 2: You know?
- 12:43Speaker 1: This is?
- 12:43Speaker 2: They've all gone through through some stuff and they've all
- 12:45Speaker 2: landed here for different reasons, but they're just kind of like,
- 12:48Speaker 2: you know, why wouldn't.
- 12:49Speaker 3: I do it?
- 12:50Speaker 4: So my my real question is this is someone that
- 12:55Speaker 4: has obviously has had life experience, isn't quite as you know,
- 13:00Speaker 4: kind of like you know, doe eyed about the world
- 13:04Speaker 4: and has has has experienced. Are they more optimistic about
- 13:07Speaker 4: this or are they more pessimistic about this? You know,
- 13:10Speaker 4: like going into it?
- 13:11Speaker 3: What was it?
- 13:12Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 13:13Speaker 3: Are they going in because I was just.
- 13:14Speaker 4: You know, whatever, it's something you know, fun to talk about,
- 13:17Speaker 4: or was it like, no, this, you know, this could
- 13:19Speaker 4: have a real outcome that would be interesting, whether it's
- 13:23Speaker 4: they have the happily ever after or otherwise. But what
- 13:26Speaker 4: is what, you know, going into it? What was their perspective?
- 13:29Speaker 4: What was their anticipation? And and I'm still I'm just
- 13:33Speaker 4: curious what were the what were the anxieties of it?
- 13:35Speaker 5: You know?
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah, oh, I'm sure, yeah, and I and I know
- 13:37Speaker 2: a lot of them had them, because especially I think
- 13:39Speaker 2: the guys, the women you'll find, uh, the women, a
- 13:43Speaker 2: few of them in particular, are just they're just let's go,
- 13:47Speaker 2: you know, they're roll. The guys, I think are what
- 13:49Speaker 2: I've found anyways, to be a little bit more you know,
- 13:52Speaker 2: not all of them, but to be a little bit
- 13:54Speaker 2: more withdrawn. I guess a little bit more holding back
- 13:56Speaker 2: and so yeah, well, I'm excited to do this with you, buddy.
- 13:58Speaker 2: This is our first time hosting this thing together.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Oh, this is my first time hosting anything. Like I
- 14:04Speaker 4: don't know what's with his microphone sills wonderful.
- 14:09Speaker 1: That's actually not true.
- 14:10Speaker 2: I've seen you do live auctions with absolute brilliance. I've
- 14:14Speaker 2: seen you do a lot of stuff, and that stuff
- 14:16Speaker 2: I cannot do. I don't know how you do it.
- 14:18Speaker 2: I mean, man alive, but you do such a great job.
- 14:20Speaker 2: You raise so much money for different charities with it,
