- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:12Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Bar.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Blazarre and Lazarn So everybody nailed it, joined as always
- 0:18Speaker 2: by our bar gap gap. Here is Evan Lazar and
- 0:24Speaker 2: Alex Bars. This is a trend. They are as close
- 0:26Speaker 2: starting defense, they get beat by the script yep, then
- 0:31Speaker 2: the game declares I have seen on film. You know,
- 0:34Speaker 2: they do get better as the game where is on
- 0:36Speaker 2: the coverage improves as a result of path rush is
- 0:39Speaker 2: improving throughout the entire game. They have a good run defense.
- 0:41Speaker 2: They're not giving up much on the ground. Their defense
- 0:44Speaker 2: PostScript is a top ten defense in the NFL. Well,
- 0:51Speaker 2: same exact formula this week. Yet, uh, it's funny and
- 0:57Speaker 2: I I think about this way too much because I
- 1:00Speaker 2: think about all this stuff way too much. Of like,
- 1:02Speaker 2: how much does their early game struggles really matter? Because
- 1:07Speaker 2: if they keep on just closing the door on the
- 1:11Speaker 2: third drive on from the game right and they give up,
- 1:15Speaker 2: I don't know even in a bad day. Let's say
- 1:17Speaker 2: they give up fourteen points early in the game on
- 1:19Speaker 2: back to back dr eves and they don't give up
- 1:21Speaker 2: any points the rest of the game, then Drake may
- 1:22Speaker 2: is gonna score seventeen and they're gonna win the game.
- 1:25Speaker 2: So it's just like, I don't know how much any
- 1:26Speaker 2: of it matters. But their script versus nonscript, we'll get
- 1:30Speaker 2: into that in a little bit, is crazy. The splits
- 1:33Speaker 2: like literally worse to first, Like they're the worst defense
- 1:37Speaker 2: in the league in the beginning of the game and
- 1:39Speaker 2: they're the best defense in the league in the second half.
- 1:41Speaker 2: It's pretty incredible. Anyways, jumping right into it at Alex
- 1:44Speaker 2: bart Evan Lazar Patriots Catch twenty two with you for
- 1:47Speaker 2: the next couple of hours here talking Patriots football. I
- 1:51Speaker 2: want it. I was all prepared, Alex to talk about
- 1:53Speaker 2: this Browns game, the good, the bad, the stuff that
- 1:56Speaker 2: gets you beat from this game against Cleveland, and then
- 1:59Speaker 2: the last night or yesterday, I should say, really starting
- 2:02Speaker 2: around noon with the Marcus Jones extension. The Patriots has
- 2:05Speaker 2: made a lot of news. They all of a sudden
- 2:08Speaker 2: had a busy day. So I want to start with
- 2:10Speaker 2: the news of the day yesterday with the three transactions,
- 2:15Speaker 2: and then we'll also get into this Browns game. And
- 2:18Speaker 2: then I do want to talk a little bit about
- 2:20Speaker 2: the Falcons because I find the Falcons to be a
- 2:23Speaker 2: pretty fascinating team. They are because I look at them
- 2:27Speaker 2: on paper and I say, it's good football team. You know,
- 2:30Speaker 2: you got some star power. They got a lot of
- 2:32Speaker 2: skill talent on the offensive side of the ball. Bjon
- 2:35Speaker 2: Robinson maybe the best running back in football this year.
- 2:38Speaker 2: But they don't win. They're three and four and they're
- 2:40Speaker 2: just jackal and hide operations. So I do want to
- 2:43Speaker 2: talk a little bit of Falcons in the second hour,
- 2:45Speaker 2: but let's start with the news. I want to start
- 2:47Speaker 2: with the good news first, and then we'll get to
- 2:49Speaker 2: the two trades and discuss those and unpack those. Marcus
- 2:53Speaker 2: Jones gets a contract extension yesterday with the Patriots, a
- 2:56Speaker 2: three year deal reportedly around you know, twelve million annually
- 3:01Speaker 2: somewhere around there, really good deal for both sides, right
- 3:05Speaker 2: around the let's call it the median of the top
- 3:09Speaker 2: ten slot corners in football. You know, most of those
- 3:11Speaker 2: guys get in between twelve and fifteen million dollars a year,
- 3:15Speaker 2: so he comes right around there with that number. I
- 3:19Speaker 2: think this is really a big news for the Patriots
- 3:22Speaker 2: because when you looked at their twenty twenty six free
- 3:25Speaker 2: agency class, his name, along probably with Tonga and Chase
- 3:29Speaker 2: On stood above the rest of They got to take
- 3:32Speaker 2: care of these guys, and they got to get these
- 3:34Speaker 2: guys under contract beyond the season. So the Patriots get
- 3:37Speaker 2: out in front of it. One of the best slock
- 3:41Speaker 2: corners in football this year and one of the best
- 3:43Speaker 2: punt returners in football really for the last three or
- 3:46Speaker 2: four years. So a really good football player, and Marcus
- 3:50Speaker 2: Jones does it the right way. Team captain. I don't
- 3:53Speaker 2: really have anything else to add other than I thought
- 3:55Speaker 2: this was a really shrewd move and a good thing
- 3:57Speaker 2: for the Patriots to keep him around. Yeah, good, good deal.
- 4:01Speaker 1: They don't have to reset the market to bring back
- 4:03Speaker 1: a player that I think is you know, is really
- 4:07Speaker 1: a testament to the job this coaching staff is done
- 4:10Speaker 1: and how quickly the adjustment has happened here, because I think,
- 4:15Speaker 1: you know, back in the summer, there were some questions
- 4:17Speaker 1: about how good of a fit is Marcus Jones and
- 4:19Speaker 1: this defense. People were wondering about his roster standing and
- 4:22Speaker 1: if he can take the team and are they going
- 4:24Speaker 1: to want a bigger slot corner. And I think he
- 4:26Speaker 1: worked on different area of his areas of his game
- 4:29Speaker 1: that maybe we didn't see as much in the past
- 4:30Speaker 1: if they did into this new role, and then I
- 4:32Speaker 1: think the coaches kind of changed that role a little
- 4:35Speaker 1: bit from what it traditionally is in this defense to
- 4:37Speaker 1: more fit him, and they kind of met in the middle,
- 4:40Speaker 1: and the result is a guy having a tremendous season.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And that's not even to mention what he gives you
- 4:44Speaker 1: on special teams as a punt returner. So to get
- 4:46Speaker 1: this done, not reset the market doing it, and it
- 4:52Speaker 1: you mentioned some of the free agents, I think he
- 4:53Speaker 1: was going to be in a tier of his own
- 4:56Speaker 1: going into this offseason. Yeah, in terms of their internal
- 5:00Speaker 1: agents like Calebon Chase on the full list of here,
- 5:03Speaker 1: Calebon Chase, On Kiris Tonga, Austin Hooper, Jack Gibbons, Jalen Hawkins,
- 5:07Speaker 1: Udarien Low, and then they have some restricted free agents
- 5:09Speaker 1: or whatever.
- 5:09Speaker 2: But those are the unrestricted guys. That's a group.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I mean, we'll see what happens to Chase on down
- 5:14Speaker 1: the stretch, but that's a group that they should be
- 5:16Speaker 1: able to take care of relatively easily. You know, you
- 5:19Speaker 1: don't You're not really gonna have to cover any new ground.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I would think resigning any of those guys, and you
- 5:25Speaker 1: want that to do list in terms of the internal guys,
- 5:28Speaker 1: to be as short as possible going into the offseason.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So when that Monday in March hits boom, you're on
- 5:32Speaker 1: the phone with new players right so to.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Get this done.
- 5:36Speaker 1: When they got it done, check that box, I think
- 5:39Speaker 1: is very encouraging.
- 5:40Speaker 2: You bring up a good point about the scheme. Fit
- 5:44Speaker 2: in some doubt this offseason about whether or not he
- 5:48Speaker 2: was the right type of slot corner for this defense,
- 5:51Speaker 2: and Mike Rabels said it. They preferred in the past
- 5:54Speaker 2: bigger slots, you know, kind of slot safety types that
- 5:58Speaker 2: could you know, fit the run and set the edge
- 6:01Speaker 2: and be the force to The big reason why is
- 6:03Speaker 2: because of the way they're stopping the run. From a
- 6:05Speaker 2: fit perspective, the nickel corner and the safeties now have
- 6:09Speaker 2: more responsibilities in the run fit to set the edge
- 6:12Speaker 2: of the defense or to be the force in the
- 6:14Speaker 2: defense to push the ball, you know, back inside. And
- 6:19Speaker 2: when you put a five 't eight hundred and ninety
- 6:22Speaker 2: pound and eighty pounds slot corner at the point of attack,
- 6:25Speaker 2: you worry about his ability to hold up against the run.
- 6:28Speaker 2: But to his credit, Marcus Jones plays a lot bigger
- 6:32Speaker 2: than his size would indicate, and he's willing to stick
- 6:35Speaker 2: his nose in there. He's fearless, he's willing to set
- 6:38Speaker 2: the edge, he's willing to take on blocks. Now, in
- 6:41Speaker 2: terms of the longevity of this contract, you do kind
- 6:47Speaker 2: of worry a little bit about his health and him
- 6:49Speaker 2: holding up playing like this for three more years. But
- 6:53Speaker 2: that's an issue for down the line and not an
- 6:56Speaker 2: issue for this season. And I don't really think next
- 6:58Speaker 2: season either, like maybe becomes something that we're talking about
- 7:02Speaker 2: in like the end of the contract in twenty seven
- 7:05Speaker 2: or twenty Well, he's also.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And it's I mean it's through his age thirty season.
- 7:08Speaker 1: It's not like they're asking him to do this at
- 7:09Speaker 1: thirty two to thirty three years old.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yeah, just between playing as much as he is on defense,
- 7:14Speaker 2: would like right around seventy five percent of the snaps
- 7:17Speaker 2: on defense, and then also returning punts as a full
- 7:20Speaker 2: time punt returner. You just something, as this contract kind
- 7:24Speaker 2: of matures, is just to watch, you know, in terms
- 7:27Speaker 2: of that. But nothing but good things to say in
- 7:29Speaker 2: terms of Marcus Jones, the person, the player on and
- 7:32Speaker 2: off the field, has really become a captain and a
- 7:36Speaker 2: leader for this defense. Tone center for this defense, and
- 7:39Speaker 2: he's playing terrific football this season basically by every statistic
- 7:43Speaker 2: you know, number one in the league and passer rating
- 7:46Speaker 2: among slot corners, number one in the league in terms
- 7:50Speaker 2: of interceptions by slot corners pass defense. You know, really
- 7:54Speaker 2: having a great year playing inside, and it's a it's
- 7:57Speaker 2: a good thing that you know, they lock him up. Now.
- 8:01Speaker 2: In terms of the trades, I think let's start with
- 8:04Speaker 2: Kyle Dugger. So the Patriots sent Kyle Dugger for pick
- 8:08Speaker 2: swap to Pittsburgh, and just really before we kind of
- 8:11Speaker 2: unpack both trades, like I just want to put this
- 8:14Speaker 2: out there, and I'm not carrying anybody's water, but if
- 8:16Speaker 2: you think that the Patriots turned down better offers, like
- 8:21Speaker 2: I know, these returns come back and people are shocked
- 8:23Speaker 2: by how little they got back for these two players,
- 8:26Speaker 2: I promise you that if there was bigger returns out
- 8:28Speaker 2: there for Kyle Dugger and Keon White, the Patriots would
- 8:31Speaker 2: have taken them. Like if somebody was offering them a
- 8:33Speaker 2: third round pick for Keon White, they were not going
- 8:36Speaker 2: to ship him to San Francisco for a pick swap
- 8:38Speaker 2: like they were going to take the third round play.
- 8:40Speaker 2: So they put these guys out on the market. Kyle
- 8:43Speaker 2: dugger has been available really since the offseason, probably and
- 8:47Speaker 2: since at least training camp, and they've been scouring for
- 8:51Speaker 2: trade partners for these two players and haven't really been
- 8:53Speaker 2: able to find one until now. So I don't think
- 8:56Speaker 2: that their markets were very robust, which is disappointing, but
- 9:00Speaker 2: that's just the reality of the situation. When I look
- 9:04Speaker 2: at the Kyle Duggart trade, what I see is trying
- 9:08Speaker 2: to get out of paying him in twenty twenty six
- 9:10Speaker 2: and twenty twenty seven. He had a lot of money
- 9:12Speaker 2: do left on that extension that he signed last offseason,
- 9:16Speaker 2: and so by making this trade they free up about
- 9:19Speaker 2: seven million dollars next year and then seventeen million dollars
- 9:23Speaker 2: I believe it is in twenty twenty seven. Now, I'm
- 9:25Speaker 2: not necessarily too caught up in the cap space of
- 9:29Speaker 2: it all. I'm more looking at the actual cash in
- 9:33Speaker 2: this situation where if you are looking your Mike Rabel
- 9:37Speaker 2: and Elliot Wolf and Ryan Cowden, and you're looking to
- 9:40Speaker 2: add players to this roster, whether it's before the deadline
- 9:43Speaker 2: on Tuesday or next offseason, not having to pay Kyle
- 9:48Speaker 2: Duggar's money now allows you to allocate that ten million
- 9:52Speaker 2: dollars someplace else, whether it's now or next off season.
- 9:57Speaker 2: So it's always about the cash. With these NFL teams.
- 10:00Speaker 2: They have plenty of cap space. That's not it's not
- 10:03Speaker 2: a cap space maneuver, but what it does allow them
- 10:06Speaker 2: to do now is maybe go and take that money
- 10:09Speaker 2: and package it to go get another player, whether it's
- 10:12Speaker 2: now or down the road. So when I look at
- 10:14Speaker 2: the Dugger trade, that's really what this is about to
- 10:17Speaker 2: me is getting out of what ended up being for
- 10:22Speaker 2: their system and all that kind of stuff. A little
- 10:25Speaker 2: bit of a bad contract.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, well they're paying a backup safety fifteen
- 10:28Speaker 1: million dollars. Yeah, that's just not good business. And right,
- 10:31Speaker 1: just to bring it back to what we talked about
- 10:32Speaker 1: with Marcus Jones, they have more financial flexibility now, and
- 10:37Speaker 1: like we said, they don't have a ton to do
- 10:39Speaker 1: in terms of internal free agents. Now, there are some
- 10:42Speaker 1: guys that are you know, you can maybe get ahead
- 10:44Speaker 1: with on extensions. Christian Salz is going to be eligible,
- 10:47Speaker 1: Kasehon Booty is going to be eligible. Drake may not yet,
- 10:51Speaker 1: but you keep that in mind. You know that's coming
- 10:53Speaker 1: down the road.
- 10:55Speaker 2: So they just it.
- 10:57Speaker 1: It gives them some more flexibility to either get ahead
- 11:00Speaker 1: on some extensions or work the external free agent market
- 11:04Speaker 1: or what have you. I will add I thought it
- 11:06Speaker 1: was interesting when I was talking with David Andrews on Monday,
- 11:11Speaker 1: he mentioned, I mean, we're getting ahead of ourselves now,
- 11:13Speaker 1: but he just brought this up.
- 11:14Speaker 2: I didn't really thought of it.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Like, and you listen, do you hear what Miles Garrett
- 11:18Speaker 1: said about Drake May after the game?
- 11:22Speaker 2: I mean a little bit of it. I don't remember
- 11:23Speaker 2: what it was.
- 11:24Speaker 1: He was very, very complimentary. He said he's proud of
- 11:28Speaker 1: Drake May. I went back and looked him. Do they
- 11:30Speaker 1: have a relationship that he's talking about him like this?
- 11:32Speaker 2: So I think they were at the Pro Bowl together.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Okay, last look, I Miles Garrett is probably not gonna
- 11:38Speaker 1: be available, just for a number of different reasons.
- 11:41Speaker 2: But like.
- 11:43Speaker 1: The they're going to have an easier time recruiting players
- 11:46Speaker 1: here than they've had in the past because of Drake May.
- 11:48Speaker 1: So that financial flexibility. People hear that and be like,
- 11:51Speaker 1: well they got to good free agents. I think it's
- 11:52Speaker 1: going to be easier than it's been in the past.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, see, I mean, look the biggest thing to
- 11:56Speaker 2: me when it comes to free agents and all that
- 11:59Speaker 2: next offseason, and is you spend a lot of money
- 12:02Speaker 2: this past off season. Yeah, And this is just again,
- 12:07Speaker 2: this is universal across the board in sports. When you
- 12:10Speaker 2: have a big spending spree one off season, you usually
- 12:14Speaker 2: don't go out and spend three hundred million more dollars
- 12:16Speaker 2: the next offseason. It's just not well.
- 12:18Speaker 1: But I mean, there's there's happy medium between the two. Right,
- 12:22Speaker 1: maybe you don't have the whole spree, but you make
- 12:23Speaker 1: one splash signing.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Sure, I'm just telling you, I don't expect them to
- 12:29Speaker 2: go out.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I don't think they're gonna be the biggest spenders in
- 12:31Speaker 1: free agency for two years in a row.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Right, That's just not how it works in any sport.
- 12:35Speaker 2: So I don't expect that to happen. Now. Last thing
- 12:38Speaker 2: on Dugger, because I do think that there is conversations
- 12:42Speaker 2: both with him Andrebriel Peppers, who ironically are not going
- 12:45Speaker 2: to play together in Pittsburgh, about why exactly we got here,
- 12:50Speaker 2: specifically to Kyle Dugger. One element of this is definitely scheme,
- 12:56Speaker 2: which we can get to here in a second. But
- 12:58Speaker 2: I also think that in injury last year, that he
- 13:01Speaker 2: tried to play through and then had off season surgery
- 13:05Speaker 2: on it. This past offseason, he just hasn't gotten the
- 13:09Speaker 2: explosiveness that we saw early on in his career. He's
- 13:13Speaker 2: not necessarily moving as well as he once did, and
- 13:18Speaker 2: I don't know if that's ever going to fully recover.
- 13:21Speaker 2: I hope it does for his sake, but I don't
- 13:24Speaker 2: know if that's ever going to fully recover. And we
- 13:26Speaker 2: see this happen. Sometimes you have to reinvent yourself. You
- 13:30Speaker 2: know one guy that did is obviously Kashan Boody. Yeah,
- 13:33Speaker 2: you know, credit to him. You know, Kasehan Boody early
- 13:36Speaker 2: on at LSU was an explosive, you know, catch and
- 13:39Speaker 2: run threat, and then he had that really bad ankle
- 13:43Speaker 2: injury in college, didn't really get that gear back and
- 13:47Speaker 2: has said so publicly that he's had to adjust his game.
- 13:51Speaker 2: So whether Kyle Dugger becomes a linebacker, whether Kyle Dugger
- 13:55Speaker 2: becomes just a situational player like he was here for
- 13:58Speaker 2: the rest of his career, I don't know. But that
- 14:00Speaker 2: ankle injury I think derailed a lot of things because
- 14:03Speaker 2: I think he was a good football player preach. OK.
- 14:06Speaker 2: The other thing is, of course is the way that
- 14:08Speaker 2: they're scheming it right now defensively in terms of playing
- 14:13Speaker 2: a lot as a zone coverage, specifically a lot of
- 14:16Speaker 2: too deep zone coverage, more than they ever have and
- 14:20Speaker 2: let's call it the next last decade or so. Obviously
- 14:23Speaker 2: it's not a Bill defense anymore, and it's very different
- 14:26Speaker 2: from that. So they just wanted types of safeties like
- 14:29Speaker 2: Jalen Hawkins and Craig Woodson who will a faster cover
- 14:33Speaker 2: more ground on the back end, can play those deep
- 14:36Speaker 2: safety zones, and that's just not really Kyle Duggar's game.
- 14:40Speaker 2: So he kind of was phased out from a scheme
- 14:42Speaker 2: perspective in this defense. And then I do think he's
- 14:45Speaker 2: probably lost half a step from that ankle injury as well,
- 14:48Speaker 2: and those two things kind of came together that that
- 14:51Speaker 2: led to his demise here with the Patriots. Keon White
- 14:55Speaker 2: the other one traded last night. The thing about Keon
- 14:59Speaker 2: White that's it out to me both from a play
- 15:02Speaker 2: style perspective and then also just from an optics perspective.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I like Keon White. I never had any issues with
- 15:09Speaker 2: Keon White. I don't know if Keon White is the
- 15:12Speaker 2: type of guy that you want to be disgruntled in
- 15:14Speaker 2: your locker room, like if he's not playing and he
- 15:17Speaker 2: doesn't have a role. Keon White is one of those
- 15:20Speaker 2: guys that's really intense, that's really confident in his abilities
- 15:24Speaker 2: and wants to play. And the Niners had a need
- 15:28Speaker 2: on the edge. They have lost some bodies on their
- 15:31Speaker 2: defensive line this season to injuries. The Patriots had the
- 15:34Speaker 2: opposite where Keon White was sort of being pigeonholed into
- 15:40Speaker 2: a role that really didn't fit his skill set. Trying
- 15:43Speaker 2: to develop him into a true four to three defensive end,
- 15:47Speaker 2: playing you know, the seven or the nine technique all
- 15:49Speaker 2: the way outside the tackle. His movement skills, he's just
- 15:53Speaker 2: too rigid, he's too stiff, he's not benny enough. He
- 15:56Speaker 2: doesn't have that first step to turn the corner out there.
- 15:59Speaker 2: He is a much better interior pass rusher. But the Patriots,
- 16:04Speaker 2: that's probably their deepest position on this roster, and Christian
- 16:07Speaker 2: Barmore and Milton Williams, as long as those two guys
- 16:10Speaker 2: stay healthier, not coming off the field right. So he's
- 16:13Speaker 2: a little too small to play inside on early downs.
- 16:16Speaker 2: He's a little bit too big and stiff to play
- 16:18Speaker 2: outside on early downs. They don't really have a third
- 16:22Speaker 2: down pass rush role for him because Milton Williams and
- 16:24Speaker 2: Barmore are in that role. So unless they're really all
- 16:28Speaker 2: he was doing on this roster was serving as injury
- 16:31Speaker 2: insurance in case somebody got hurt and there just wasn't
- 16:34Speaker 2: enough playing time for him. So if I'm the Niners,
- 16:38Speaker 2: and I don't think they're going to based off of
- 16:40Speaker 2: some of the reporting out of San Francisco, but the
- 16:43Speaker 2: role for Keon White is third down interior pass rush,
- 16:46Speaker 2: like that's that's his specialty when he gets to rush
- 16:50Speaker 2: over the guard one on one on the inside in
- 16:53Speaker 2: past rush situations, He's a very disruptive player. The further
- 16:58Speaker 2: you move him outside away from the football, all the
- 17:00Speaker 2: worse it gets. And I just don't think that they
- 17:03Speaker 2: really had a role. Like when you look at Chase
- 17:05Speaker 2: On and Landry and how they rush the passer and
- 17:08Speaker 2: how they move out on the edge, that is a
- 17:11Speaker 2: very different athlete and a very different kind of player
- 17:14Speaker 2: than what they had with Keon White. So they're just
- 17:16Speaker 2: again it's the scheme thing. There wasn't really a role
- 17:19Speaker 2: for him, so they end up sending him out to
- 17:21Speaker 2: San Francisco. But another trade out. They really didn't get
- 17:25Speaker 2: a ton of return for their investment here.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Yeah, this is one where I thought they might be
- 17:30Speaker 1: able to get a little bit more.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Now.
- 17:31Speaker 1: There was some reporting this morning from Tom Pellisero that
- 17:34Speaker 1: it's not guaranteed to be a pick swap. If Keon
- 17:37Speaker 1: White's actor for seven games, I would assume that I
- 17:39Speaker 1: mean seven games with the Niners, not seven games total
- 17:42Speaker 1: this season. Then the Patriots keep their seventh round pick
- 17:45Speaker 1: and it just becomes ke On White for six, which
- 17:47Speaker 1: is not a ton but it's obviously better. Yeah, it
- 17:53Speaker 1: sucks because it's a guy that that is talented and
- 17:55Speaker 1: I think came here at a time where they were
- 17:57Speaker 1: not in a spot to develop them and three coaches
- 18:00Speaker 1: in three years and changing roles, and he dealt with
- 18:03Speaker 1: some injuries. He had a concussion as a rookie, the
- 18:05Speaker 1: illness this year, and h just got passed over. So
- 18:09Speaker 1: I don't think we've heard the last of Keyon White
- 18:11Speaker 1: in the NFL. You know, I think he'll be a
- 18:13Speaker 1: solid player if he ends up in the right spot.
- 18:15Speaker 1: And there's a ton of opportunities form in San Francisco
- 18:17Speaker 1: because they're very banged up, both on the edge end
- 18:19Speaker 1: on the inside, but he he really didn't have a
- 18:22Speaker 1: role here and I think a change of scenery was best.
- 18:26Speaker 1: And now I wonder if the Patriots go out and
- 18:28Speaker 1: try to find another team's keyon White.
- 18:31Speaker 2: And we've seen what.
- 18:31Speaker 1: They've done with calevon Chase on a guy that was
- 18:33Speaker 1: a high draft pick that just really couldn't stick anywhere,
- 18:37Speaker 1: and nobody figured out the right way to use him,
- 18:39Speaker 1: right way to develop him. And they seem to have
- 18:41Speaker 1: unlocked something there. And the one thing when I look
- 18:43Speaker 1: at and look at the NFL trade deadline, so you
- 18:45Speaker 1: take it all with a grain of salt, although this
- 18:47Speaker 1: has felt Patriots did last night that felt like a MLB, NHL,
- 18:52Speaker 1: NBA trade deadline kind of thing. But you know, the
- 18:56Speaker 1: one constant I kind of see when you look at
- 18:58Speaker 1: all the rumors is there might be like a number
- 19:03Speaker 1: of young edge rushers available. Some of the names you
- 19:07Speaker 1: see out there, like Arnold Wi, Ketty, Azizo, Jalari, Jalen Phillips.
- 19:12Speaker 1: I don't know if he's going in the division, but
- 19:14Speaker 1: boy A Mafi, I don't really know why the Seahawks
- 19:17Speaker 1: are trade him, but I've seen his name out there.
- 19:18Speaker 1: There's one more that I'm blanking on off the top
- 19:21Speaker 1: of my head, but you know these guys that are
- 19:23Speaker 1: in their mid twenties that were first round picks or
- 19:27Speaker 1: high draft picks, whatever you want to call it, who
- 19:29Speaker 1: just for one reason or another have not been able
- 19:31Speaker 1: to stick, have not been able to make it work.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Arden Key was known. He's a little bit older, he's
- 19:35Speaker 2: twenty nine, But I could see that Tennessee guy.
- 19:38Speaker 1: You know, they bring in a guy like that, even
- 19:40Speaker 1: if it's on an expiring contract, with the idea that
- 19:42Speaker 1: they're going to resign him and try to develop him
- 19:44Speaker 1: and work him as a pass rusher. Maybe he's a
- 19:46Speaker 1: better scheme fit than what Keon White was, but that
- 19:48Speaker 1: same idea, a guy that just isn't a fit with
- 19:51Speaker 1: his current team but still has some physical tools.
- 19:53Speaker 2: So we talked a little bit about that running back
- 19:55Speaker 2: in terms of needing three, I think you need three
- 19:57Speaker 2: edge rushers on game day, well, but but you need
- 20:01Speaker 2: three guys that you trust to play on the edge
- 20:03Speaker 2: because you don't want to play those guys one hundred
- 20:05Speaker 2: percent of the snaps. You want to be able to
- 20:07Speaker 2: mix in and rotate a little bit with Landry and
- 20:12Speaker 2: Chase on Jennings has you know, rotated a little bit
- 20:14Speaker 2: in Yeah, in this game against Cleveland, getting a third
- 20:18Speaker 2: guy that maybe fits a little bit better than Jennings,
- 20:20Speaker 2: I think. I think situational.
- 20:22Speaker 1: You have Jennings on early downs like he's three A
- 20:24Speaker 1: not even three A and three B. And then you
- 20:26Speaker 1: have like your third you have your third early down guy,
- 20:28Speaker 1: and then you have your third pass rush guy. And
- 20:30Speaker 1: right now you know what they're doing at running back
- 20:33Speaker 1: with Terrell Jennings. You mentioned the running back situation. Maybe
- 20:36Speaker 1: there's a comp here. Maybe this is we want to
- 20:38Speaker 1: clear the runway for Elijah Ponder and see what he has.
- 20:41Speaker 1: We want to clear the runway for Kayleb Murphy and
- 20:43Speaker 1: see what he has. He was pass rushing a little more, yeah,
- 20:45Speaker 1: with the Chargers before he got I was gonna say,
- 20:47Speaker 1: maybe this is where Braden Swinson factors and could have
- 20:50Speaker 1: been Truman Jones if he didn't get signed.
- 20:51Speaker 2: But you know, maybe it's as simple as that. I don't.
- 20:54Speaker 1: The question is, are they just going to reset the
- 20:58Speaker 1: rotation bring one of those guys in or are they
- 21:01Speaker 1: trying to upgrade the rotation and go out and get
- 21:03Speaker 1: one of those names that I mentioned.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that you know, just to wrap it
- 21:07Speaker 2: up on all these trades, I think the biggest thing
- 21:10Speaker 2: about all these things is that work one were trade
- 21:12Speaker 2: take after this. Sure, we're learning a lot about Rabel's
- 21:17Speaker 2: types at these various positions and just pulling it up
- 21:21Speaker 2: really quickly. And this is big on our show because
- 21:23Speaker 2: we're going to talk about this all draft season and
- 21:25Speaker 2: all off season as well. Harold Landry is clearly his
- 21:29Speaker 2: dream edge rusher, right, And just in terms of body tie, well,
- 21:32Speaker 2: I'm sure there could be a higher ceiling guy out there,
- 21:34Speaker 2: but just in terms of the way he's built on
- 21:37Speaker 2: that side, I think in either side, because I think
- 21:40Speaker 2: him and Chase on it pretty similar. So Landry's six
- 21:43Speaker 2: two two fifty so not the six three two seventy
- 21:47Speaker 2: five that Keon White is right, And then I would
- 21:50Speaker 2: also say the two skill sets that are really one
- 21:54Speaker 2: A and one B above everything else with their edge
- 21:58Speaker 2: rusher archetype is get off firs, step, explosiveness, and bend.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Like if you can't do those two things, if you
- 22:06Speaker 2: can't get off the ball and bend and turn the corner,
- 22:09Speaker 2: they are that's not your their type of guy. They
- 22:13Speaker 2: want guys that can get off the ball bolt against
- 22:15Speaker 2: the run and against the pass because they're you know,
- 22:17Speaker 2: they're spilling in their run fits and so they're crashing
- 22:20Speaker 2: the end down inside and trying to get the ball
- 22:22Speaker 2: to bounce to the outside. So it's different. They're not
- 22:26Speaker 2: boxing the ends anymore like they did in the Belichick system,
- 22:29Speaker 2: where they're funneling the ball back inside. Allah Anthony Jennings, right,
- 22:33Speaker 2: who's going to just sit out there and hold the
- 22:35Speaker 2: tackle on the outside and force the ball back inside.
- 22:39Speaker 2: They want guys that are coming off the ball. They
- 22:41Speaker 2: want guys that are winning, you know, to the spot
- 22:44Speaker 2: in the run game, right to the point of attack
- 22:46Speaker 2: and the run game, when there's a polar from the
- 22:48Speaker 2: other side of the formation, they want to be able
- 22:50Speaker 2: to get there first. So that's not key on White's game.
- 22:54Speaker 2: That's not really Anthony Jennings's game. It's Landry and Chason's game,
- 22:59Speaker 2: and those are their guys. So once we start looking
- 23:02Speaker 2: in the market for who could be available both at
- 23:06Speaker 2: the trade deadline and the next offseason to add some
- 23:08Speaker 2: depth at that position, I'm basically canceling out anybody in
- 23:13Speaker 2: the mold of a Whiter or Jennings. I think those
- 23:16Speaker 2: guys are totally off the table for what they want
- 23:19Speaker 2: to do from a front mechanic perspective on the edge.
- 23:22Speaker 2: So if you're looking for archetypes, if you're looking for fits,
- 23:25Speaker 2: like it's the Landryes of the world, it's the chase
- 23:28Speaker 2: Ons of the world. Like, those are the types of
- 23:30Speaker 2: guys that they want. So I look at, you know,
- 23:32Speaker 2: some of the names that you mentioned, although it's not
- 23:35Speaker 2: like truly splashy like Ardent Key, I think comes to
- 23:38Speaker 2: mind as a guy that fits exactly what that does.
- 23:41Speaker 2: I think that he was in Tennessee with Rabel for
- 23:45Speaker 2: a year. Uh yeah, a couple of years twenty twenty three,
- 23:48Speaker 2: he was in Tennessee with Rabel. So a guy that
- 23:51Speaker 2: he's familiar with, a little bit veteran player, fits fits
- 23:55Speaker 2: the mold, fits the suit, uh right, at six five
- 23:58Speaker 2: two forty like, that's exactly what they're looking for. So
- 24:01Speaker 2: I think that there's a lot of things to learn,
- 24:03Speaker 2: both that safety, but also in terms of the edge
- 24:06Speaker 2: rushing that is different. You know, they're not again they're
- 24:09Speaker 2: like they're not setting the edge to the defense the
- 24:12Speaker 2: way they used to anymore. They want these guys up
- 24:14Speaker 2: the field. They want these guys spilling. They want these
- 24:18Speaker 2: guys forcing the ball outside and bouncing the football, So
- 24:21Speaker 2: they want guys that can get off the ball. And
- 24:24Speaker 2: you know that that's the difference between you know, why
- 24:27Speaker 2: is Jennings not playing as much? Why is Keon White
- 24:30Speaker 2: now traded? That's why. So it's an interesting sort of
- 24:34Speaker 2: exercise to understand. And they seem very locked in to
- 24:39Speaker 2: these types, like it doesn't seem like there's much wiggle room.
- 24:42Speaker 2: I think the only guys so far that's convinced them
- 24:45Speaker 2: otherwise is Marcus Jones. Other than that, they are really
- 24:48Speaker 2: really stringent and like kind of sticking to their principles
- 24:52Speaker 2: in terms of what they look for. What's your last
- 24:54Speaker 2: take there? One more?
- 24:55Speaker 1: So I don't know if you want to do other
- 24:57Speaker 1: trade deadline take, but one more trade deadline thought. I
- 24:59Speaker 1: have texting about this a little last night, and I
- 25:01Speaker 1: think I won you over on this, which I didn't
- 25:03Speaker 1: think I was gonna be able to. So they have
- 25:06Speaker 1: to add another edge rusher, whether it's Braden Swinton from
- 25:08Speaker 1: the practice squad or trading for somebody or signing for
- 25:10Speaker 1: like just bodies. They need another guy. Sure, they're gonna
- 25:14Speaker 1: need another running back on the roster. We know that,
- 25:17Speaker 1: and they already added a safety they signed last night.
- 25:20Speaker 1: I'm blanking on his name off the Dolphin squad. Yeah,
- 25:24Speaker 1: John Saunders, so I said, Josh John John Saunders. So
- 25:28Speaker 1: they're gonna need they already added. They have one spot
- 25:30Speaker 1: they need to add an edge rusher on a running back,
- 25:32Speaker 1: so there's some more shuffling coming. There's one other position
- 25:35Speaker 1: i'd really like to see them add, and this could
- 25:37Speaker 1: maybe overlap with running back. I would like to see
- 25:39Speaker 1: them at a kick returner. And if that means you
- 25:42Speaker 1: do a six to seven pick swap again and you
- 25:45Speaker 1: turn one of those six into a seventh, people are
- 25:47Speaker 1: probably gonna screen bloody murder that I'm saying trade for
- 25:51Speaker 1: kick returner. I think it matters. I think it matters
- 25:54Speaker 1: to the extent when you have ten eleven draft picks,
- 25:57Speaker 1: you can make that move. Here's why you asked last night,
- 26:01Speaker 1: what is the difference between the best returners and the
- 26:03Speaker 1: worst returners in the NFL. The best kick returns in
- 26:06Speaker 1: the NFL top five six to seven guys are all
- 26:09Speaker 1: averaging about thirty yards per return. The league averages twenty
- 26:12Speaker 1: five and a half. The guys at the bottom of
- 26:15Speaker 1: the list A when qualifying returners are closer to twenty,
- 26:17Speaker 1: they're just a tick over twenty. So you talk about
- 26:20Speaker 1: the Patriots since Antonio Gibson got hurt or averaging twenty
- 26:24Speaker 1: three point eight yards per return. They were up near
- 26:27Speaker 1: thirty before that. You're talking about, you know, seven to
- 26:31Speaker 1: ten yards per return per How many returns are you
- 26:35Speaker 1: going to have in a game, say three to four
- 26:38Speaker 1: to be conservative, that's forty yards of field position that
- 26:42Speaker 1: you're potentially leaving on the table. People may roll their
- 26:45Speaker 1: eyes at that. If you look at the there's eight
- 26:48Speaker 1: teams right now that are over five hundred in the AFC.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Let's just call that group playoff contenders for the time being.
- 26:54Speaker 1: For what it is, six of those eight teams have
- 26:58Speaker 1: a kick returner that ranks in the top half the
- 27:00Speaker 1: league that is above average. One of the teams, the Chargers, doesn't,
- 27:05Speaker 1: only because none of their.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Kick returners have enough returns to qualify for the leaderboard.
- 27:09Speaker 2: They rotate guys.
- 27:10Speaker 1: So when you're going up against these teams that are
- 27:14Speaker 1: in the playoff hunt, or even ideally when you play
- 27:16Speaker 1: them in the playoffs, they are going to have that
- 27:18Speaker 1: field position advantage. They have that kind of kick returner
- 27:21Speaker 1: the Patriots, Henderson's been better. But remember they said a
- 27:25Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago, if Trayvon Henderson is going to
- 27:28Speaker 1: play a bigger role in the offense, they don't necessarily
- 27:31Speaker 1: want him returning kicks because they don't want him taking
- 27:33Speaker 1: on that physical toll. You would hope after what he
- 27:35Speaker 1: did against the Falcons, he is going to play a
- 27:38Speaker 1: bigger role in the offense moving forward. Efton Chisholm still
- 27:41Speaker 1: think he has some upside as a receiver. He's not
- 27:43Speaker 1: an NFL kick returner at this point. So you look
- 27:46Speaker 1: at the top kick returners in the league. Ironically, most
- 27:49Speaker 1: of them are receivers, so they may have to be
- 27:51Speaker 1: heavy at wide receiver if they were to do this,
- 27:54Speaker 1: but I would count it to you know, oh, we
- 27:57Speaker 1: had seven receivers active.
- 27:58Speaker 2: A one was Matthew Slade. So I look at the
- 28:02Speaker 2: top kick returners in the league.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Now, maybe they double dip and they do the running
- 28:09Speaker 1: back thing. I've been big on Jerome Ford, Yeah, as
- 28:12Speaker 1: a guy that could help you out with that, and
- 28:14Speaker 1: now boom, he's your third running back and your kick returner.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Dylan Louby would be a guy on a bad Raiders team.
- 28:21Speaker 1: He hasn't played a ton of offense. He's mainly just
- 28:23Speaker 1: been a kick.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Returner in his career.
- 28:24Speaker 1: He's played more offense this year in the last year.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Would you be comfortable him as your third running back?
- 28:28Speaker 1: Isaiah Davis? I don't think the Jets woul trade Brees
- 28:30Speaker 1: Hall in the division? Would they trade his backup? But
- 28:33Speaker 1: you know there are some receivers that are up there
- 28:35Speaker 1: on bad teams. Greg Dortsch on Arizona, you know, would
- 28:39Speaker 1: they be willing to part ways with him again in
- 28:43Speaker 1: division trade? But Dwayne Eskridge in Miami is in the
- 28:45Speaker 1: last years contract. He's averaging twenty seven yards return. And
- 28:48Speaker 1: the one other name I'll throw out there. I'm not
- 28:50Speaker 1: saying this because he's a former Patriot. I'm literally just
- 28:53Speaker 1: looking who are the best kick returners who are on
- 28:55Speaker 1: bad teams who might part with them, especially the guys
- 28:58Speaker 1: on expiring contracts. Gunner Roschevski's a top five kick returner
- 29:02Speaker 1: in the NFL right now.
- 29:03Speaker 2: He's averaging twenty eight point three yards per return. Do
- 29:06Speaker 2: you go out and get him?
- 29:07Speaker 1: And he doesn't need to play a snap a wide receiver,
- 29:10Speaker 1: but to rebolster that kick return unit. Again, I know
- 29:14Speaker 1: it's a little bit of a banana's take. I get that.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I actually think there's real value in this that people
- 29:20Speaker 1: may not realize because the new kick return rules.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Okay, so the average starting field position in the NFL
- 29:26Speaker 2: right now, yeah, after kickoff yep, Detroit leads the league
- 29:32Speaker 2: and they are at they have what's his name returning kickoffs.
- 29:36Speaker 2: I can't remember, he's good. I have the list here here.
- 29:38Speaker 2: They're Sailors, Jacob Sailors. Their average starting field position is
- 29:42Speaker 2: the thirty five. Yep. The Minnesota Vikings are the last
- 29:47Speaker 2: place team in this stat in the league. Their average
- 29:50Speaker 2: field position is the twenty seven. So we're talking about
- 29:54Speaker 2: from the worst team in the league to the best
- 29:56Speaker 2: team in the league. About an average of eight yards
- 29:59Speaker 2: per kickoff return. So I know I agree with you.
- 30:03Speaker 2: I know to the most people that doesn't sound like
- 30:05Speaker 2: a lot. It can be a lot.
- 30:08Speaker 1: You got to extrapolate that over multiple kickoffs, right, and
- 30:12Speaker 1: let's say it's the end of the game, right or
- 30:14Speaker 1: even the end of the half, and you're trying to
- 30:15Speaker 1: get down and get a field goal.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Those eight yards are going to be massive. So I
- 30:18Speaker 2: think the biggest thing to me though, is that and
- 30:22Speaker 2: you know, this is a much longer philosophical discussion that
- 30:25Speaker 2: I don't know if I want to have right now.
- 30:26Speaker 2: But the biggest thing to me right now with the
- 30:29Speaker 2: kickoff return rules is it's not having the exact impact
- 30:32Speaker 2: that we thought it would. They are not there's now
- 30:36Speaker 2: explosive returns. So Antonio Gibson's touchdown returns still the only
- 30:40Speaker 2: one in the NFL, I believe this season on a kickoff. Yes,
- 30:43Speaker 2: so they're not getting the big returns off of this
- 30:47Speaker 2: new rule, but getting the thirty yard line is now
- 30:52Speaker 2: kind of the goal on these kickoff returns, and that
- 30:55Speaker 2: has proven to be a little bit harder than maybe
- 30:58Speaker 2: you expected because really there's no space out there, Like
- 31:01Speaker 2: they build a wall across the field with their you know,
- 31:04Speaker 2: ten guys that they're allowed to build, and there's really
- 31:09Speaker 2: it's it's a very hard play to block and it's
- 31:12Speaker 2: a very hard play to return. So it's actually turned
- 31:14Speaker 2: out to be the opposite effect. It's it's kind of
- 31:17Speaker 2: pinning teams more than it is actually having big returns.
- 31:21Speaker 2: So now gaining the thirty plus is like now an advantage,
- 31:25Speaker 2: Like if you can do that, you're swinging about ten
- 31:28Speaker 2: yards of field position compared to your.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Also, just the threat of having somebody back there, and
- 31:32Speaker 1: you see how it forces teams into bad decisions like
- 31:35Speaker 1: trying those what do they call the dirty kick, the dirty.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Kicks, and that comes up short. We saw that happen,
- 31:41Speaker 2: you know, against Buffalo.
- 31:41Speaker 1: So I just I think you need somebody back there
- 31:46Speaker 1: that is going to be a factor. And if they're
- 31:48Speaker 1: not gonna put Travon Henderson back there, which I'm not
- 31:50Speaker 1: necessarily if they want to give him the ball fifteen
- 31:53Speaker 1: twenty times a game, I'm fine if he's not returning kicks,
- 31:56Speaker 1: but you gotta have somebody back there that's a factor,
- 31:58Speaker 1: and not just well he won't fumble, and I can
- 32:03Speaker 1: you you know, with the have four to six round picks,
- 32:06Speaker 1: you turn one of those into a seventh to add
- 32:08Speaker 1: a kick return if he breaks off one big return.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Who's arguing, Ye're like, you're you're like stumping for this take,
- 32:14Speaker 2: Like everybody's disagreed.
- 32:15Speaker 1: I I feel like saying trade for a kid. I know,
- 32:18Speaker 1: you know what, It's weird. Ever since I've had this take,
- 32:20Speaker 1: I feel like I've had to strongly defend it because
- 32:23Speaker 1: it just seems like the kind of sick barth take
- 32:26Speaker 1: that I want to trade for a kick returner, but
- 32:28Speaker 1: I don't mind trading for. But also I feel like
- 32:31Speaker 1: throwing gunro Chevsky out there is going to get.
- 32:33Speaker 2: We are talking about eight to ten yards of field position.
- 32:38Speaker 2: We're not talking about twenty, so I's not.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Over per return. I just think having the threat back
- 32:43Speaker 1: there as a factor.
- 32:44Speaker 2: I hear you, I it would be kind of funny
- 32:46Speaker 2: ideas che one last trade deadline take that I just
- 32:50Speaker 2: am thinking about over here as we're talking about these possibilities.
- 32:54Speaker 2: I don't know, I know nothing, but I do feel
- 32:57Speaker 2: like we are seeing the Patriots kind of clear runway
- 33:00Speaker 2: for a trade here. So I would expect them to
- 33:03Speaker 2: try to add somebody by Tuesday. I'm not telling you
- 33:06Speaker 2: it's gonna be, you know, Trey Hendrickson or something, but
- 33:10Speaker 2: it does feel like you get some picks back for
- 33:13Speaker 2: these two players that were depreciated assets that you didn't
- 33:16Speaker 2: have roles for to maybe open the door for them
- 33:20Speaker 2: to acquire a player. It also feels that way to
- 33:24Speaker 2: me because they did it a week in advance. If
- 33:26Speaker 2: they had done this on Tuesday, then maybe that would
- 33:30Speaker 2: have been a little bit different, but the fact that
- 33:31Speaker 2: they did it so early tells me that this is
- 33:33Speaker 2: like a preemptible stress up yeah to something else. So
- 33:37Speaker 2: we'll see what it ends up being. I know there's
- 33:39Speaker 2: a lot of big names. They always get floated around
- 33:42Speaker 2: around the trade deadline, and sometimes that happens, sometimes it doesn't.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Most of the time, it doesn't. Like this is not
- 33:47Speaker 2: the NBA or the MLB where you see like star
- 33:52Speaker 2: players moved at the deadline. In football too often, there's
- 33:55Speaker 2: a lot of trades, but they're not usually trades of consequence,
- 33:59Speaker 2: if that makes sense. It's like, it's not You're not
- 34:01Speaker 2: going to see a ton of Luka Doncic trades right
- 34:05Speaker 2: in the NFL. It just doesn't happen in season very often.
- 34:10Speaker 2: But maybe that'll change this year. We're going to talk
- 34:12Speaker 2: about the Browns, but before we do, hate Patriots fans,
- 34:16Speaker 2: we want to see Toyota's best offers, including those not
- 34:18Speaker 2: seen on TV. Go to buy at toyota dot com.
- 34:21Speaker 2: It's Toyota's official website for deals for the official vehicle
- 34:24Speaker 2: of the New England Patriots. Toyota Let's go places and
- 34:28Speaker 2: football fans know that traditions matter turning moments together into
- 34:31Speaker 2: something truly epic. They're what inspire us to make our
- 34:34Speaker 2: masa and tostitos the traditional way, starting with whole corn kernels,
- 34:38Speaker 2: no artificial flavors, colors are preservatives, all to give you
- 34:41Speaker 2: that perfect crunch. Discover your next tradition this football season.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Head to the store, grab your Tostito's team bag, and
- 34:47Speaker 2: scan the code for a chance to score an epic
- 34:49Speaker 2: experience with the Patriots. Toastedo's tradition matters. So like, this
- 34:54Speaker 2: is like basically reset where we were almost restarting the
- 34:57Speaker 2: show again because we're gonna start where we usually start now,
- 35:01Speaker 2: which is recapping the game last week. So that first
- 35:04Speaker 2: thirty minutes was kind of like its own thing, and
- 35:07Speaker 2: now we're going into the actual show plan that I
- 35:09Speaker 2: had for today with this Cleveland Browns game. So my
- 35:12Speaker 2: big picture takeaway from this game against the Browns is
- 35:16Speaker 2: because I'm gonna get a little nitpicky with certain things,
- 35:18Speaker 2: because I want to point to a few trends that
- 35:21Speaker 2: are just not going. They're blown teams out right. They're
- 35:25Speaker 2: blown doors right now against bad teams, which is great
- 35:28Speaker 2: to see. It's great that we're at that point, but
- 35:31Speaker 2: we are at a point now where my expectations for
- 35:35Speaker 2: this team, and like my calibration of how I talk
- 35:38Speaker 2: about the team is shifting towards It's no longer are
- 35:43Speaker 2: they good? They are good? Now it's are they great? Like?
- 35:46Speaker 2: Can they be a true contender? They are trending towards
- 35:50Speaker 2: being a playoff team. So I'm thinking about this now
- 35:55Speaker 2: in the way of like, where can they fine tune
- 35:59Speaker 2: certain things so that they can make some noise in
- 36:02Speaker 2: the playoffs. And this isn't just a twenty twenty one
- 36:05Speaker 2: Reducts where they make the playoffs, ya whippy, and then
- 36:09Speaker 2: they get blown out by a good team in the
- 36:11Speaker 2: wildcard round. So I think that there's some nitpicks to
- 36:16Speaker 2: this game, both on offense and defense that we'll get into.
- 36:19Speaker 2: But to start with the good stuff, I think the
- 36:21Speaker 2: most encouraging thing about this game from a Drake May perspective,
- 36:25Speaker 2: and we can start there. I can come out here
- 36:28Speaker 2: and give Drake May all of his flowers, call me MVP,
- 36:31Speaker 2: and do it like we can do that. It's fun, cool,
- 36:33Speaker 2: we all know it. But the one thing that stands
- 36:36Speaker 2: out to me with him week to week is when
- 36:39Speaker 2: there is something to nitpick his game about one week,
- 36:42Speaker 2: he almost always fixes it by the following week. So
- 36:46Speaker 2: in Tennessee, we were talking a lot about the one
- 36:48Speaker 2: in runs, like he was not staying in the pocket,
- 36:51Speaker 2: he wasn't keeping his eyes down the field, he was
- 36:54Speaker 2: taking a lot of hits on scrambles. It wasn't sliding
- 36:57Speaker 2: like all those different types of things. I thought this
- 37:00Speaker 2: week I really only had one small grape with him
- 37:04Speaker 2: in this regard. It was on the bootleg sacked by
- 37:06Speaker 2: Miles Garrett, like that one we can just throw into
- 37:08Speaker 2: the tenth row and not take a hit there. But
- 37:10Speaker 2: at the same time, I thought he stayed in the pocket.
- 37:13Speaker 2: I thought he hit the backside of the progression more
- 37:15Speaker 2: than I think I've seen him do in any game
- 37:17Speaker 2: this season against and that's against a really good pass
- 37:20Speaker 2: rush too. Now, he took six sacks, so that's an
- 37:24Speaker 2: element of it. But at the same time, I can't
- 37:29Speaker 2: harp on him staying in the pocket and going through
- 37:31Speaker 2: his reads one week and then criticize him for taking
- 37:35Speaker 2: sacks the next week when I wanted him to stay
- 37:36Speaker 2: in the pocket and go through his progressions. So I
- 37:38Speaker 2: thought that he really took a step forward and Nat
- 37:42Speaker 2: regard kind of corrected some of those things. Scrambled when
- 37:45Speaker 2: he needed to scramble, got out of bounds on the
- 37:47Speaker 2: sixteen yarder, slid down on the twenty eight yarder. Just
- 37:50Speaker 2: much cleaner game from all those perspectives. And then he
- 37:53Speaker 2: was he was gamebusters in the second half. You know,
- 37:56Speaker 2: eight for eight, one hundred and fourteen yards, three touchdowns,
- 37:59Speaker 2: perfect passer rating in the second half of this game.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Last thing that drive that really put the game away,
- 38:07Speaker 2: the twenty eight yard scramble followed by a thirty nine
- 38:10Speaker 2: yard touchdown. Yep, that is MVP. Put the cape on,
- 38:15Speaker 2: put the team on the back. Hey Cleveland, warm up
- 38:18Speaker 2: the buses. It's time to go home. This game is over.
- 38:21Speaker 2: That was mahomes Alan Lamar Burrow esque. When the game
- 38:27Speaker 2: is almost over and you just want to go for
- 38:30Speaker 2: the juggular. I'm going to hit you with back to
- 38:32Speaker 2: back explosives and we're in the end zone and this
- 38:34Speaker 2: game is over. That's the type of stuff that wins MVPs.
- 38:37Speaker 2: You know, that's the type of thing when you put
- 38:39Speaker 2: the team on the back for a drive like that
- 38:41Speaker 2: where it's literally all you. He kind of did the
- 38:43Speaker 2: same thing in Miami where it was the big player
- 38:46Speaker 2: Ramandre Stevenson touchdown game over. Like, that's the same thing
- 38:49Speaker 2: I felt like in this game against Cleveland. I know
- 38:52Speaker 2: it was already twenty three to seven at that point,
- 38:54Speaker 2: it wasn't necessarily a close game, but that was the
- 38:58Speaker 2: drive that really ended the game. And Drake May pulled
- 39:01Speaker 2: out the MVP cap.
- 39:04Speaker 1: I mean so after the scramble was the first time
- 39:06Speaker 1: we've heard MVP chance for at least here. I think
- 39:08Speaker 1: he got some on the road, But and how does
- 39:11Speaker 1: he respond first play after his first MVP chance thirty
- 39:14Speaker 1: nine yard dot to Keshan Boudio. He was really good
- 39:17Speaker 1: in this game. He took some sacks. I think against
- 39:21Speaker 1: his defense, you just have to take some stacks, not
- 39:23Speaker 1: force it. I thought when he did scramble he did
- 39:25Speaker 1: a much better job of protecting himself. The slide on
- 39:28Speaker 1: the long scramble was a little ugly, but it was
- 39:30Speaker 1: effective and I'll take the function over fashion at that point. So, yeah,
- 39:37Speaker 1: another great game from him. One other thing I think
- 39:39Speaker 1: he did that he's been doing, but I think it
- 39:41Speaker 1: was highlighted in this game. A lot of young quarterbacks
- 39:44Speaker 1: do tend to have their favorites more so than the
- 39:47Speaker 1: average quarterback. And the example I always use is Keenan
- 39:51Speaker 1: Allen got what one hundred and forty targets from Trustin Herbert.
- 39:55Speaker 1: I don't think Drake Mays like that, which is a
- 39:57Speaker 1: good thing. I definitely think he has his preferences, you know, Keishn,
- 40:00Speaker 1: Booty Hunter, Henry. But this game plan calls for a
- 40:04Speaker 1: lot of Mac Hollins, and it's all right, let's rip
- 40:06Speaker 1: it to mac Collins and not a second thought about it.
- 40:08Speaker 1: It makes sense. Mac Hollins is a plus blocking wide receiver.
- 40:13Speaker 1: That makes him a little more effective off play action.
- 40:15Speaker 1: He's been one of their better play action receivers this year.
- 40:19Speaker 1: We talked about running play action against this aggressive Browns
- 40:22Speaker 1: defense all week. They ran a lot of play actions.
- 40:24Speaker 1: So wouldn't you know it, it's a mac Collins game
- 40:26Speaker 1: and he just adjusted to it and hit it. And
- 40:29Speaker 1: that makes him dangerous because with the young quarterbacks sometimes
- 40:32Speaker 1: the book can be if you take away this receiver,
- 40:35Speaker 1: he's not as confident throwing to the other guys, and
- 40:37Speaker 1: it's going to slow him down and it's going to
- 40:38Speaker 1: create some issues. I don't think you can do that
- 40:41Speaker 1: to Drake May. He'll throw the ball to whoever. He'll
- 40:43Speaker 1: throw the ball to the open guy. He'll throw the ball,
- 40:46Speaker 1: the ball to the guy the defense dictates. So you're
- 40:49Speaker 1: starting to hear people being now like, well, when are
- 40:51Speaker 1: we going to get the book on Drake May? You
- 40:53Speaker 1: hear this with all these young quarterbacks, you know, the
- 40:55Speaker 1: books out on him. The plan is out there, the blueprint,
- 40:59Speaker 1: and that can be something that can be a part
- 41:01Speaker 1: of the blueprint, and it looks like it might not
- 41:03Speaker 1: be for Drake May.
- 41:04Speaker 2: That's the Josh McDaniels offense to a tea to me,
- 41:06Speaker 2: and that's the thing it plays super well. Josh mcdanniel
- 41:08Speaker 2: throwing to the open receiver, throwing where the coverage dictates
- 41:11Speaker 2: you to go with the football, not forcing it to
- 41:13Speaker 2: certain guys that aren't open within the coverage structure like that.
- 41:18Speaker 2: That's basically the foundation of the Josh McDaniel's passing offense
- 41:23Speaker 2: is that you need to threaten the defense with all
- 41:26Speaker 2: five eligible receivers on every single play if you are
- 41:30Speaker 2: closing off a side of the field, if you are
- 41:33Speaker 2: zeroing in on one guy. Now, Brady had his guys too, right,
- 41:37Speaker 2: Like he was zero in on Gronk and Edelman plenty,
- 41:40Speaker 2: but those guys would get open. So I think what
- 41:42Speaker 2: you're seeing with this offense is they have a hierarchy
- 41:46Speaker 2: now to their passing game, which I think is huge.
- 41:49Speaker 2: With Stefan Diggs at the top of the depth chart,
- 41:51Speaker 2: they now have Okay, these games where the defense is
- 41:55Speaker 2: probably doing something, whether it's Denzel Ward or whether it's
- 41:59Speaker 2: you know, skindically from an exus and no standpoint, these
- 42:03Speaker 2: defenses are doing things to make sure that Stefan Diggs
- 42:05Speaker 2: isn't going off. And now all of a sudden, Matt
- 42:07Speaker 2: Collins is one on one the entire game, Kaishan Boody
- 42:10Speaker 2: is one on one on the big play, and Drake
- 42:12Speaker 2: May is attacking those matchups. You know, they got a
- 42:15Speaker 2: rookie corner on the outside one on one against Kaise
- 42:19Speaker 2: Shawn Booty and he went right at him and that
- 42:21Speaker 2: was definitely something And we saw it in the micd
- 42:24Speaker 2: up if you want to check out the mic up
- 42:25Speaker 2: miked up on the Patriots dot com or Patriots YouTube
- 42:28Speaker 2: of Josh McDaniels of him going over to Drake May
- 42:31Speaker 2: and saying, hey, trust your guys against the guys we
- 42:34Speaker 2: want to trust them against I guarantee you. They circle
- 42:37Speaker 2: that corner, that rookie corner on the depth chart and said,
- 42:41Speaker 2: if we have him on the outside against Kayshawan Boody,
- 42:43Speaker 2: we're gonna We're gonna take at least one of of
- 42:46Speaker 2: these shots and see if we can get that play
- 42:47Speaker 2: to work. Uh So, I kind of thought that going
- 42:50Speaker 2: into the game, like the non Denzel Ward corners for
- 42:53Speaker 2: the Browns, I thought were vulnerable Tyson Campbell their slot
- 42:57Speaker 2: corner where I keep blanking on his freaking name. You know,
- 43:00Speaker 2: those guys I thought were a little bit susceptible outside
- 43:03Speaker 2: a Denzel Ward, and they took advantage of it. Speaking
- 43:05Speaker 2: of Josh McDaniel's, just a masterclass from him. I thought,
- 43:10Speaker 2: really from the start of the game on. I know
- 43:12Speaker 2: the third quarter drive is getting all the pub as
- 43:14Speaker 2: it should, but Jim Schwartz is a really good play caller,
- 43:18Speaker 2: one of the best defensive coordinators in football for the
- 43:21Speaker 2: Cleveland Browns. Josh McDaniels took him to school like he
- 43:24Speaker 2: took him to school in this game. And if you
- 43:27Speaker 2: are it's one thing to go out there as a
- 43:29Speaker 2: play caller, as a coordinator and take like a young inexperienced,
- 43:33Speaker 2: first time play caller to school. When you're taking a
- 43:36Speaker 2: guy like Jim Schwartz outside and behind the woodshed like that,
- 43:40Speaker 2: that's a feather in your cap as a play caller
- 43:42Speaker 2: and as a coordinator. I thought, what really got this
- 43:45Speaker 2: game going from McDaniel's perspective was that very first plus
- 43:52Speaker 2: run for Travon Henderson was a wham scheme right up
- 43:54Speaker 2: the gut. They ran full back wham with Jack Westover.
- 43:58Speaker 2: They gained twelve yards on that wham scheme right up
- 44:01Speaker 2: the gut, and the rest of the game and the
- 44:02Speaker 2: Cleveland Brown spent overplaying the inside run like they showed
- 44:06Speaker 2: him inside run action and then they could started get
- 44:09Speaker 2: the toss going the trayvon Henderson out on the edges.
- 44:12Speaker 2: That opened up the boots, that opened up the play action,
- 44:15Speaker 2: and it all kind of fit together from there. After
- 44:18Speaker 2: they got that opening drive where they go twelve yard run,
- 44:22Speaker 2: eighteen yard run to Travon Henderson. It kind of just
- 44:24Speaker 2: opened up from there for this offense, even when they
- 44:27Speaker 2: were getting shut down a little bit in the first half,
- 44:29Speaker 2: like they were getting into the red zone, like they
- 44:31Speaker 2: had two red zone drives, they drove another one to
- 44:34Speaker 2: the twenty four for Cleveland right before half, So it
- 44:37Speaker 2: wasn't like they weren't moving the ball, they just were
- 44:39Speaker 2: stalling and then they kind of the dam broke in
- 44:42Speaker 2: the second half. So I can't say enough good things
- 44:45Speaker 2: about Josh McDaniels, his job, the job he's doing with
- 44:48Speaker 2: his football team, both with Drake May behind the scenes
- 44:52Speaker 2: on the sideline, the play calling, the play sequencing, you know,
- 44:55Speaker 2: showing similar presentations, formations, things like that, and then running
- 44:59Speaker 2: different plays out of it to keep defenses off balance.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Is the amount that they're throwing at defenses in general,
- 45:06Speaker 2: whether it's under center, movement plays, shotgun, RPO, read option,
- 45:12Speaker 2: you know, different runs, you know, inside outside runs, cracks,
- 45:15Speaker 2: toss cracks, inside run plays, outside zone. There's just a
- 45:20Speaker 2: million different things that they throw out of defense on
- 45:23Speaker 2: a given Sunday. He's done a great job. Deserves his flowers,
- 45:28Speaker 2: I think right now, and I said this yesterday, between
- 45:32Speaker 2: McDaniels and Shane Steichen in Indianapolis, those are the two
- 45:37Speaker 2: hottest play callers in the NFL right now on the
- 45:39Speaker 2: offensive side of the ball. So you're doing a really,
- 45:43Speaker 2: really good job. When you're talking about he might be
- 45:46Speaker 2: on the biggest heater of any play caller in football
- 45:49Speaker 2: besides maybe the guy that's making Daniel Jones look good.
- 45:53Speaker 2: And so that tells you a lot about Josh McDaniels
- 45:55Speaker 2: right now.
- 45:56Speaker 1: That that open and look, he was good the whole game.
- 45:58Speaker 1: That opening drive of the third orter just perfect. I mean,
- 46:01Speaker 1: come on, that was he He hit him with literally
- 46:05Speaker 1: everything you had, cracked toss, you would play action toss,
- 46:09Speaker 1: you had a speed option in there, which you know
- 46:10Speaker 1: I loved. There was a trick play mixed in ghet
- 46:12Speaker 1: some things off play action. I mean it was they
- 46:15Speaker 1: were their heads are spinning. That was just brilliant, brilliant
- 46:18Speaker 1: stuff from Josh McDaniels. Again, he's been good all year.
- 46:21Speaker 1: That drive was another one that was the best masterpiece
- 46:25Speaker 1: caliber drive.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Yeah, one of the best skirted drives in the league
- 46:27Speaker 2: all season. You know, Danielrolofsky said that he watches a
- 46:30Speaker 2: lot of football too, so it's not just me from
- 46:32Speaker 2: a biased standpoint saying that truly one of the best
- 46:35Speaker 2: scripted drives in all of the NFL this season. You mentioned,
- 46:39Speaker 2: you know, just all the different things they threw at him,
- 46:41Speaker 2: even just like setting up you know, handing the jet
- 46:44Speaker 2: sweep to pop to set up the hoops. Jets sweep
- 46:47Speaker 2: in there too. Yeah, so they run a jet sweep
- 46:50Speaker 2: and then they come back and they run jet motion
- 46:53Speaker 2: and then they get Hunter Henry just wide open in
- 46:56Speaker 2: the flat on the touchdown. And if you watch the
- 46:59Speaker 2: defensive back for Cleveland, they actually flip the safeties. So
- 47:03Speaker 2: the safety starts down, he sees the jetsweep the safety
- 47:06Speaker 2: who's up. He comes down to take the other side
- 47:08Speaker 2: of the formation to take the jetsweep. That safety goes
- 47:11Speaker 2: back and then all of a sudden, now there's a
- 47:13Speaker 2: two on one in the flat to hunt Hunter Henry,
- 47:16Speaker 2: all schemed, all dressed up. And when you watch the
- 47:21Speaker 2: micd up that instance, there's a couple of different instances
- 47:25Speaker 2: within the micd up that were kind of subtle where
- 47:28Speaker 2: Josh McDaniels is basically saying, yep, okay, now you go
- 47:32Speaker 2: over there, right and if we're gonna throw it here,
- 47:34Speaker 2: and like he's basically knowing exactly how Cleveland is going
- 47:38Speaker 2: to react to all the motion and all the different
- 47:40Speaker 2: movement from by the offense. That is next level preparation,
- 47:44Speaker 2: like having that ability to watch a defense on film,
- 47:48Speaker 2: and I think We talk about this a lot with motion,
- 47:50Speaker 2: like how does the team a defense react to motion,
- 47:53Speaker 2: Like how do they play motion? Do they follow it?
- 47:56Speaker 2: Do they pass it off? Do they use their safeties
- 47:59Speaker 2: like the Browns due to to you know, rotate. He
- 48:01Speaker 2: knew the Browns were going to rotate their safeties like
- 48:03Speaker 2: that when they motioned. They didn't they relate to it
- 48:06Speaker 2: against pop pop games. Eight yards on the play before.
- 48:09Speaker 2: So now they are on it and they're really overplayed
- 48:12Speaker 2: on the Henry touchdown. And he knew it the whole time.
- 48:15Speaker 2: He knew exactly what he was doing. That that's play calling,
- 48:18Speaker 2: that stack and plays, that's sequencing plays off of each other.
- 48:21Speaker 2: Really really good stuff. I want to stick on one
- 48:25Speaker 2: point there. Trayvon Henderson. A nice breakout game for Trayvon Henderson.
- 48:30Speaker 2: They finally got the ball to him in space and
- 48:32Speaker 2: got him outside on these toss plays. Obviously, you know,
- 48:36Speaker 2: you can't be too predictable with toss plays, you know.
- 48:39Speaker 2: I think as the game wore on, they tried a
- 48:42Speaker 2: couple more late in this game, and Cleveland was ready
- 48:45Speaker 2: for it and shut him down. But once you start
- 48:48Speaker 2: tossing the ball, then you have the run actions off
- 48:50Speaker 2: the toss. But then you also have now the inside
- 48:53Speaker 2: is going to start to open up for him, right
- 48:54Speaker 2: when you start to get guys to over pursue out
- 48:57Speaker 2: to the edge, and now you can hit him inside
- 48:59Speaker 2: with different run. I thought this plan, you know, this
- 49:02Speaker 2: usage was significantly improved. And then I thought Henderson was
- 49:07Speaker 2: a lot better in this game, both making reads out
- 49:10Speaker 2: in space, but also his pass blocking. I thought he
- 49:12Speaker 2: had a couple good pass blocking grips in this game
- 49:15Speaker 2: as well. So his game is starting to develop and
- 49:17Speaker 2: he's starting to come along. That would be huge. Yeah,
- 49:19Speaker 2: if they could get training camp Travion Henderson back, and
- 49:22Speaker 2: maybe he's not quite as dynamic as he was in
- 49:24Speaker 2: training camp, but close to that. We still haven't really
- 49:28Speaker 2: unlocked the passing game elements of what he could do
- 49:30Speaker 2: as a receiver. This is all running game stuff. But
- 49:34Speaker 2: he carried the ball seven times I think are around
- 49:36Speaker 2: seventy yards on those outside tosses he runs outside of
- 49:40Speaker 2: the tackles, averaged almost ten yards per attempt on crack
- 49:43Speaker 2: toss schemes, essentially down the line there. This was good.
- 49:48Speaker 2: This was a very positive development for them.
- 49:50Speaker 1: Yeah, it really was go figure. It just took facing
- 49:52Speaker 1: the best run defense in the league. But the crazy
- 49:55Speaker 1: thing to me, so remember earlier in the year when
- 49:59Speaker 1: people were saying tre On Henderson needs to play more,
- 50:01Speaker 1: and we were saying, like, no, he's playing a lot.
- 50:02Speaker 1: It just doesn't feel like it because he's not doing
- 50:04Speaker 1: a ton. We've hit the complete polar opposite of that.
- 50:08Speaker 1: So Ramandra Stevenson in this game had fifteen touches on
- 50:12Speaker 1: fifty snaps five zero fifty snaps, touched the ball fifteen times.
- 50:17Speaker 1: Trevion Henderson had ten touches on fourteen snaps. That's that's
- 50:23Speaker 1: an insane usage rate. I mean, he was basically what
- 50:26Speaker 1: two out of every three times more than to every
- 50:28Speaker 1: three times he was on the field he got the ball.
- 50:30Speaker 1: So you don't want it to become a tell, but
- 50:33Speaker 1: it's kind of crazy that it felt like he played
- 50:35Speaker 1: this big role in this game. He really was not
- 50:36Speaker 1: on the field that much. Yeah, so and maybe that's
- 50:39Speaker 1: ultimately the role for him. Maybe that's what it is.
- 50:42Speaker 1: You know, right, pick your spots and go. Now, they
- 50:45Speaker 1: are going to need another running back to spell more
- 50:47Speaker 1: with Stevenson. If they're going to do that fifty snaps,
- 50:49Speaker 1: the game is a lot. Even if it is only
- 50:50Speaker 1: fifteen touches, but yeah, if they can get him going,
- 50:54Speaker 1: that's a huge development.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it was really positive. Again, I think there was
- 50:59Speaker 2: a clear and he he said so as much after
- 51:01Speaker 2: the game when I asked him that there was a
- 51:02Speaker 2: clear point of emphasis this week to let's get this
- 51:07Speaker 2: guy out on the edge and see what he can
- 51:08Speaker 2: do in some space. And if we have to toss
- 51:11Speaker 2: the ball to him instead of stretch handoffs and things
- 51:14Speaker 2: like that, that's what we're going to do. So they
- 51:16Speaker 2: did a nice job of getting him out outside the tackle,
- 51:19Speaker 2: some really good blocks on some of those plays as well.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Shout out Jared Wilson, I thought was really good at
- 51:25Speaker 2: his games, especially climbing to the second level of the
- 51:29Speaker 2: defense on some of those toss schemes, like his ability
- 51:31Speaker 2: to climb to the second level when they run him
- 51:34Speaker 2: to the right side to Morgan Moses' side. His ability
- 51:38Speaker 2: to get up to the second level and block the
- 51:40Speaker 2: backside pursuit is why that becomes a twenty seven yard
- 51:43Speaker 2: run because he's up there at the second level turning
- 51:46Speaker 2: out that week sidelinebacker and that allows those runs to
- 51:50Speaker 2: go from you know, okay, let's call it a six
- 51:52Speaker 2: yard run to a twenty seven yard run. That's how
- 51:55Speaker 2: you get those bigger runs down the field. So Morgan
- 51:58Speaker 2: moses at thirty four getting out there front of those
- 52:00Speaker 2: toss schemes. I thought that again. Jared Wilson was a
- 52:03Speaker 2: big part of it as well. So a lot of
- 52:06Speaker 2: good things there from all those players, A couple of
- 52:09Speaker 2: the positives on the defensive side of the ball here
- 52:10Speaker 2: and the goods. I thought that again. You know, they
- 52:13Speaker 2: settled down nicely against the script, but I think the
- 52:16Speaker 2: biggest thing for them was the only way Cleveland was
- 52:20Speaker 2: going to win this game is by running the football
- 52:23Speaker 2: like they had to run the ball with quin Shawn Jenkins,
- 52:25Speaker 2: play really good defense on the other side of the ball,
- 52:28Speaker 2: and win this game, you know, twenty to seventeen, seventeen
- 52:32Speaker 2: thirteen something like that, like that was their formula. They
- 52:35Speaker 2: kind of got it for the first half defensively, but
- 52:38Speaker 2: they were never able to run the ball. Judkins had
- 52:41Speaker 2: what nineteen yards on nine carries in the same was
- 52:44Speaker 2: running into a brick wall the entire game. I broke
- 52:47Speaker 2: it down and after further of you with you know,
- 52:49Speaker 2: diagrams and plays, and it's much easier to digest that way,
- 52:53Speaker 2: but the way they're fitting the runs different than it
- 52:56Speaker 2: did in the past. I mentioned that earlier in the show.
- 52:58Speaker 2: They have it rolling right now from a run defense perspective,
- 53:01Speaker 2: roberts Plaine has it rolling. But also this defensive line
- 53:04Speaker 2: is as good against the run as any defensive line
- 53:07Speaker 2: I've seen for the Patriots. They don't make any mistakes,
- 53:11Speaker 2: they don't jump out of gaps, they don't get double
- 53:13Speaker 2: teamed off the ball very often. They are sound, they're
- 53:17Speaker 2: stout up front. It's a great group. It's being coached
- 53:20Speaker 2: really well by Clint McMillan. He deserves a lot of
- 53:22Speaker 2: credit for that as well. But their run defense continues
- 53:26Speaker 2: to be one of the best run defenses in football.
- 53:29Speaker 2: And this was a week where the Browns were big,
- 53:31Speaker 2: physical team up front, really physical, good rookie running back,
- 53:35Speaker 2: and the Patriots completely shut him down on the ground.
- 53:37Speaker 1: Yeah, and they're gonna get another test this week in BEJN. Robinson,
- 53:40Speaker 1: so we'll really tell. But the run defense is, I mean,
- 53:44Speaker 1: it's at an insanely high level right now. And you
- 53:47Speaker 1: talk about I was actually oddly enough kind of impressed
- 53:50Speaker 1: with Judkins in this game in the sense that I
- 53:53Speaker 1: thought when he got hit, he did a good job
- 53:54Speaker 1: of falling forward and creating some hitting yardage, and even
- 53:57Speaker 1: doing that, he really didn't.
- 53:59Speaker 2: Do a lot in this game. No, didn't do a
- 54:01Speaker 2: lot at all. Now, part of that's game script, like
- 54:03Speaker 2: once you're down by two touchdowns, you're not going to
- 54:05Speaker 2: keep running the football most likely. But again I thought
- 54:08Speaker 2: that was the Browns only path to victory was a
- 54:11Speaker 2: big Judkins game, a big game for their defense, and
- 54:15Speaker 2: they got the defense from the first half, but they
- 54:17Speaker 2: didn't sustain on defense and then they never got Judkins going.
- 54:21Speaker 2: And I thought that was a huge reason why the
- 54:23Speaker 2: Patriots won this game so easily, was that Cleveland was
- 54:26Speaker 2: never going to beat him throwing the football. They just
- 54:28Speaker 2: Dylan Gabriel was never going to be the reason why
- 54:30Speaker 2: they lost. So I thought that that was, you know,
- 54:34Speaker 2: something that was really feathering their cap. Last thing on
- 54:37Speaker 2: the goods and then we'll take a break and we'll
- 54:38Speaker 2: talk about the bads here. Just the goods. These receivers,
- 54:43Speaker 2: I think just continue deserve praise for the work they're doing.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Maccollins big game for him, As you mentioned, three more
- 54:52Speaker 2: chunk plays in this game, as five in the last
- 54:54Speaker 2: two weeks. Kaishawan Boody just once a week, Kasehwan Boody
- 54:58Speaker 2: is hitting a bomb. May It seems like over the
- 55:01Speaker 2: last month or so, I just continue to be really
- 55:04Speaker 2: impressed by every single player kind of finding their targets,
- 55:09Speaker 2: finding their role, Like even Pop Douglas hits the forty
- 55:12Speaker 2: four yard or on the extended play, Like they all
- 55:15Speaker 2: kind of have a niche right now. They all kind
- 55:17Speaker 2: of work and fit together. Again. I'm not gonna sit
- 55:21Speaker 2: here and say I wouldn't take aj Brown or I
- 55:23Speaker 2: wouldn't take a stud receiver on top of this, But
- 55:28Speaker 2: when you start talking about trades and the deadline and receiver,
- 55:32Speaker 2: I'm not that interested in adding a receiver. That's just
- 55:35Speaker 2: kind of part of this mix. Like it's gotta be
- 55:38Speaker 2: somebody that top of the depth chart or don't. Like
- 55:43Speaker 2: I see a lot of these names out there that
- 55:46Speaker 2: got thrown out there. I'll just give you an example,
- 55:48Speaker 2: and I'm a fan of this player, but I don't
- 55:51Speaker 2: really see the need to trade for Chris Alave. Like
- 55:54Speaker 2: I think Chris Alave is just gonna play where Kaishan
- 55:56Speaker 2: Boodie is playing. How much more production, how much better
- 56:01Speaker 2: is he gonna be than Kaishan Budi to give up
- 56:03Speaker 2: a pick for Chris Olave. Like again, if it's not
- 56:07Speaker 2: Aj Brown, if it's not somebody of that ilk, I'm
- 56:11Speaker 2: not interested in receiver because right now they are puzzle
- 56:14Speaker 2: pieces at that position and in that room just fit
- 56:17Speaker 2: tremendously together. And Drake May has got plenty. He's got
- 56:21Speaker 2: enough receiver talent on this team right now. I'm really
- 56:25Speaker 2: pleased with where it are.
- 56:26Speaker 1: It's more of a long term need because look, Diggs
- 56:28Speaker 1: is a big part of what they're doing right now,
- 56:30Speaker 1: and he's thirty one, right so you got to go
- 56:32Speaker 1: out and you got to get the guy that's going
- 56:34Speaker 1: to grow long term with Drake May. I also would
- 56:38Speaker 1: like to see them if we're I mean, we're getting
- 56:40Speaker 1: way ahead of ourselves here, but get that Z slot type.
- 56:44Speaker 1: I'm good with Kaishan Boudi at the X. I don't
- 56:46Speaker 1: think they need the big outside X. I think you
- 56:48Speaker 1: like Kaishan Bouti in that role. Find the guy and
- 56:50Speaker 1: maybe it's ky Wiams, who knows, but find the guy
- 56:52Speaker 1: that's gonna step into Diggs role.
- 56:54Speaker 2: Sure, and that that's really the addition they need. After that,
- 56:57Speaker 2: they're in relatively good shape. Yeah, agreed. All right, we're
- 57:00Speaker 2: gonna take a quick break and then we'll do some

- 59:48Speaker 2: that Atlas could also have some brunt workwar dog clothes
- 59:53Speaker 2: do clo. So yeah, I think you know. If you're
- 59:55Speaker 2: gonna be the official sponsor of the Jellette Stadium field Crew,
- 59:59Speaker 2: then Boyd is a heart of the Jiled Stadium field Crew.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: Uh so we need to get him outfitted with some

- 1:00:10Speaker 2: That would be great. I love that, right, My dog

- 1:00:17Speaker 2: It rolls. So what happens when you have a short
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: haired dog in New England when it gets cold? Uh,
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: he doesn't really like the cold too much. All right,
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: let's get back to football. I want to talk about
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: some of the the other things here in terms of
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: the bads. Let's say in this game, the nitpicks of
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: this game. And again I want to be clear, this
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: is about fine tuning things so that this team can
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: go on a run here and be a true playoff contender.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: They're already a good team. Let's make them a great team.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: One of the things that stands out to me right
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: now with Drake may and and then I want to
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: unpack all of these sacks. He's now second in the league.
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: He has taken twenty eight sacks this year. That's second
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: most in the NFL. His pressure two sack rate, so
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: when he's under pressure, how often does he go down?
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: That's also the second highest in the league at twenty
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: six percent. So I think one thing that stands out
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: to me about these numbers is getting sacked a lot.
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: That's just on the surface, but when you dig even deeper,
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: he's a great scrambler, he's a great play extension artist,
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: but when he gets under pressure, he's going down. You know,
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: that seems to be the book on him. This is
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: a bit of everything, you know, some of its offensive line.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: But I will give the offensive line this. All six
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: of the sacks in this game took over four seconds.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: So this was not jail breaks. This was not Miles
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: Garrett blowing by Will Campbell in two and a half seconds.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: In sacking the quarterback. There was one or two sacks
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: that I would put on May. Certainly the bootleg I
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: think is a default where just throw the ball away
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: and save the yards there. But I thought the first
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: red zone sack he got a little hung up on
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: remondros Stevenson kind of froze on his first read a
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: little bit had Hunter Henry in the middle of the
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: field if he had come off of that. So, as
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: all with sacks, this is a little bit of a
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: quarterback stat It's not just an offensive line stat. I
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: want to go sack by sack here in a second
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: and talk about Will Campbell in some of the issues
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: that they had upfront. But if there's one thing that's
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: going to start to bite them in the butt. Offensively,
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: it's that they're taking a lot of sacks, which of
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: course is putting them in long down and distance, and
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: to Drake May's credit, he's getting them out of it.
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: You know, he's getting into second and seventeen and turning
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: that into first down, which is very uncommon in a
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: feather in his cap in terms of you know, his play.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: But eventually, when you place better defenses, eventually, when your
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: luck kind of runs out and those long down and
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: distant situations, sacks can be drive killers. Right now, they
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: haven't been drive killers because of how good he's been,
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: but eventually that might change. So where are you at
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: with this number of sacks? Because I think I go
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: back and forth on it. On the one hand, you
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: don't want to take away his play extension, his instincts
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: to try to hold in the hocket, hang in the
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: pocket and let things develop, because he's capable of squeaking
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: out and hitting Pop Douglas for forty four yards right
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: down the field. So you don't want to completely take
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: that away. But at the same time, you are taking
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: a lot of sacks. Right now, it's starting to pile up.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: I mean, there, what's the stat I think it's something
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: like once you have a sack on a drive. I'm
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: trying to remember exactly what it is, just trying to
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: look it up. I think like on drives that include
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: a sack, teams only score like fifteen percent of the
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: time or something like a sack can really really set
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: you back. So it's obvious not great. I don't know
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: how sustainable it is at this level for them to
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: keep making it work, but I it's working, right, it's working,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: And I don't, like you said, you don't want to
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: negate his ability to extend plays. And maybe as the
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: line continues to come together and they build chemistry and
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: will Campbell and Jared Wilson get more experienced, it just
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: kind that number comes down naturally. Yeah, I would also
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: I'd rather take the sacks and the turnovers. And if
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: the sack number comes down to turnover number goes back up,
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: that's not necessarily good thing either.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: So the one thing I will say about the sacks too,
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: I hear list a lot just throw the ball away. Well,
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: if you started just throwing the ball away from the
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: pocket and there's pressure, then that's what's called intentional grounding, right,
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: Like you can't just you can throw the ball away
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: at guy's feet and you can throw the ball away
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: you know where it's like kind of your guy or
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: no guy. And like Brady was a master at that
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: and he eliminated that way. It's very hard and it's
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: a fine line because if you start trying to throw
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: the ball under pressure at guy's feet or like out
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: of bounds and you don't get it out of bounds,
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: those become turnovers.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: The one thing he does need to get better at
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: doing is when he's outside the pocket throwing the ball away.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: There's a few times where he's taking sacks or even
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: run out of bounds outside of the pocket, Like those
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: ones need to be thrown away.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: That would be a.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: Bigger nitpick for me. Inside the pocket is different. He's
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: got to be a little more willing to.
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: Throw the ball away outside the pocket. Yeah, I agree
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: with that. I mean the Miles garrebuleg sack is a
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: perfect example. This is one other like little nitpick that
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: I had from this game from a the one sort
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: of nitpick of Josh McDaniels and Drake May from a
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: play calling perspective, there was three plays in this game
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: that we're doomed from the start, the tackle trap played
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: down by the goal line on the first drive that
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: goes for minus four yards, the bootleg to Miles Garrett's side,
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: and then there was one other run that went that
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: was so I think it was the third and one run.
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: Maybe that got stuff. But I just wonder where we're
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: at and maybe I'll try to ask this this week,
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: like where are we at with Drake checking out a place?
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: So I was gonna say the bootleg to Garrett's side
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: that they called, and we had talked a little bit
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: last week about running bootlegs to his side to upset
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: his timing, But that was on the left side. That
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: was on the back side. That's one where I do wonder.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: You get to the line, you're expecting that to be
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: a boot away from him. Suddenly he's on the right side.
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: Should they have checked out of that play? Should they
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: check out of it? Can they? Can they just flip
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: it right like? And he, you know, give a little
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: flipper call and then all of a sudden, instead of
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: booting to the left, you're booting to the right. Now
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: there's moving parts. You got to move the tight ends,
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: you got to move all the pieces. But that's part
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: of maturing and part of developing here as a quarterback.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: I'm not holding it totally against him because I don't
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: know if they're giving him that kind of control yet.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: So I think that that's a question for Josh McDaniels
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: and Ashton Grant of like how much is he really
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: allowed to do at the line of scrimmage, like if
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: he's canning, like if they have two play calls in
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: the huddle. Yeah, that's very different than asking him to
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: see Miles Garrett on the right side and now we're
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: gonna flip it, and now we're gonna move the tight
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: end over here. We're gonna flip the formation, and now
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: we're going to run the boot leg to the left
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: because Miles Garrett's lined up on the right. In theory,
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: that sounds great. In practice, it's not as easy. So
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: I don't know where they are with that whole thing.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: But you know, I mentioned the tackle trap play that
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: goes four minus four on first down from like I
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: think it was like inside the five right on the
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: opening drive there, basically kill the drive and force them
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: to kick a field goal. There they run tackle trapped
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: to a wide nine. So like the defensive end on
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: the side of the field that they're pulling to is
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: all the way outside the tackle. He's way outside. So
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: now Morgan Moses has to go from right tackle. He's
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: going to pull all the way to the front side
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: of the play, all the way out to a wide
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: nine technique defensive end. Like he's not going to get there.
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: He's just not Like it's just not a possibility. And
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: so what happens. You know, the guy comes into the backfield.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: I think it was Alex right, you know, he comes
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: screaming out the field, into the backfield, blows out to
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: play for four yard loss. So when we start looking
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: at those types of things, you know, where are they
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: at with checking in and out of plays? Where are
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: they at with Drake may having the controls and having
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: that ability. I think that might be Josh McDaniel's offense
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: PhD level, Like that might be the next step for
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: them in terms of the mental stuff and the pre
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: snap stuff defensively. Oh wait, I want to take talk
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: about sacks. So I mentioned all six sacks took more
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: than four seconds, so this was not a jail break situation.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: I wrote down somewhere, Hopefully I have it somewhere where
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: like all the sacks were to blame, right, and who
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: was to blame in my mind, you know, I'm not
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: in the room. I don't know for one hundred percent,
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: but just where the blame was for some of the sacks.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: So I look at the very first sack in the
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: red zone and wasn't a great execution on the chip
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: by Will Campbell. He lets Miles Garrett around him. But
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: I kind of felt like that was also a little
- 1:08:36Speaker 2: bit on may Like I thought he held the ball
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: a little bit on that play. They did ship Miles Garrett.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: It happened in over four seconds. There was an open
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: receiver in the middle of the field. He also could
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: have ran out to his right, you know, and try
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: to extend the play that way. So I kind of
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: looked at that one as I gave it to Campbell,
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: like it's Campbell's sack, But I also kind of look
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: at it and say the quarterback could helped him out
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: a little bit there. The other Miles Garrett sacks, one
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: of them was on Jared Wilson on a stunt. He
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: stunted inside a little tn he wraps inside, beats Jared Wilson.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: He beat Morgan Moses on the hunt move like a
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: couple of times and finally got a sack out of
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: it on Morgan Moses and then they had the bootleg sack.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: So two on Campbell on the chips, one on Wilson,
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: one on Moses, one on scheme or you know, play call.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: I didn't think this was a disastrous game from Will Campbell.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: I really didn't, And watching it back, I thought he
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: was really good against Miles Garrett one on one, got
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: him eight times without any help. One on one, I
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: thought he won seven of them and the one time
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: that he didn't win, Drake May stepped up in the
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: pocket and scrambled, so it wasn't a pressure. I thought
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: that he was much better without the chips and the chips,
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: I'm sure you talked to David Andrews a little bit about,
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: you know, the technique and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: It just wasn't executed properly. But outside of the two sacks,
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: which were more about his execution I thought than Miles Garrett,
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: I really think that this was a okay game for
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: Will Campbell. I'm not gonna excuse him for the sacks,
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: but I think that it was better than the original
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: watch made it see him.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: A first ballot Hall of Famer, made a rookie look
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: like a rookie going up against the first ballot Hall
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: of Famer like.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: It wasn't a disqualifying game by any means.
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: He needs to be better than that most weeks, but
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: he's not facing Miles Garrett most weeks. Right, you mentioned
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: the chips, and what Andrews had talked about was, you know,
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: the chip is not necessarily meant to buy you time.
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: It's to offset the center of gravity.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: And what Campbell does is he used it to buy time,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: so he hunter Henry chips, he's still back in his
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: pass set, and then he lets Garrett come to him,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: so it's essentially resetting the rush. It does buy you
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: a second, but it doesn't actually make anything easier for
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: Campbell in the one on one. If anything, it makes
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: it harder because now Garrett has more of a head
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: of team coming to him. And what Andrews pointed out
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: is later in the game, it wasn't against Garrett, it
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: was against somebody else. They get the same look, and
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: this time Will Campbell steps up and meets him right
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: in the chip, meets the rusher right in the chip,
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: instead of letting the rusher come to him, so you
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: saw the growth there. I don't think Will Campbell's at
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: the point where he's Trent Brown, We're all right, we're
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: not gonna chip because it's gonna throw him off.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: He just has to.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: He didn't really get chip help in college, so it's
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: not something he's done a lot.
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: He has to learn how to. This was also a
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: very different type of chip help because, like Hunter, Henry
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: literally is like chucking him off the line of scrimmage,
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: like he's engaging him off the line of scrimmage in
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: his face. Whereas as the game we're on, there's a
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: couple of more instances. One on I believe it was
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: Booty's touchdown where they executed the chip better, but also
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: that he got chip help from the running back instead
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: of the tight end on the line of scrimmage. And
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: I think those he looks a little bit more comfortable
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: with because that helps him with the short corner, right,
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: because we talked a lot about with him, you know,
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: and the ability, you know, to get a little bit
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: over aggressive and kind of get off his landmark and
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: then open the inside to those inside rush moves. When
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: you get a little bit of help, you know from
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: the running back coming out of the backfield. What that
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: can do is that pushes the rusher back inside. So
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: instead of allowing the rusher to threaten the corner and
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: open up Will Campbell now he can kind of set
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: a little bit more to the inside and have that
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: ability to just let the chip kind of just push
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: him back inside towards him. So I think the running
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: back chip help. He's better at that. So like if
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: I when they're moving forward, if you're not gonna see
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: Miles scared again, thank god, But if they see another
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: pass rusher that's an elite guy. I don't even know
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: when or if, but if they do, then I think
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: the running back chip help is he seems more comfortable
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: with that than he did with the tight end chips.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: And then as the game we're on, like he closed
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: down the space and he got much better at it,
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: even with Hunter Henry working on the chips. But I
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: agree with the point when he goes and chip, like
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: Campbell needs to take that time to go get his
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: hands on Garrett, right. He can't sit back and try
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: to catch Garrett. You want to chip him from the
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: tight end, campb will get aggressive. He gets his hands
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: on him too, and now we're running riding him around
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: the edge again. I thought he was much better on
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: one on one pass pro in this game than he
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: was with the Chips. So those were the sacks, you know.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: I like to see them take a little bit fewer sacks,
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: you know, Drake May take a little bit of fewer sacks.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: I think this goes hands in hand a little bit
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: with the man coverage stuff that we saw from Cleveland
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: in this game, which I think more teams are gonna
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: try against the Patriots. Even though the Patriots won some
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: rounds in man coverage, the forty four yard at a
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: pop being a big one. The twenty eight yard scramble
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: by may was against man coverage, they also had to pick.
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: They had five sacks of their six sacks were in
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: man to man. Man with a spy on Drake May
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: might be might be the book of what teams try
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: playing zone against Drake may As a death sentence. Do
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: not play zone against this kid. Like second him the
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: league and EPA against zone coverage, he is lighting up zone.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: The only quarterback in the league that has been better
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: against zone covers than Drake may As Patrick Mahomes so
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: like that's not an answer. You know, these two deep zones,
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: he's covered two's like he's just shredding those types of zones.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: Man to man is more about the receivers than it
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: is about the scheme or the quarterback. Can the receivers
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: get open? That that's the difference. So I think we're
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: gonna see a little bit more of that moving forward.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: You spy Drake May with a linebacker, you know, Carson's
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: Wessinger did it on his pick. He's a spy in
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: that play. And then you play man to man on
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: the back end. Can the receivers separate consistently against man?
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: If you spy Drake May, can he outrun the spy?
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: Is that a factor or not a factor? I think
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: that's where we're headed here. If you keep playing zone
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: against Drake May, he's gonna be the most efficient quarterback
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: in the league all year. Like that, that's just gonna
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: be a death sentence for teams. Maybe the man to
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: man stuff is it? Browns kind of found something in
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: that first half. The Falcons a aj Terrell, It's not
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: really what they do. They're more of his own defense.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: I don't know if they're gonna play a lot of
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: man in this game. It's not really their book. It's
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: not really their mo Tampa maybe, Like you know, I
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: don't know if these teams have it in terms of
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: the horse. Yeah, so that's the thing. It's easier said
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: than done. You got to have the horses to do it.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: And then you know, not this year, but long term,
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: if you're the Patriots, you go out and you get
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: a bunch of man beater wide receivers and you put
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: him around Drake May. So that's if that's the book
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: on Drake May, that's not an easy defensive game plan
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: to execute by any means, not for four quarters.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: No, And you know his big playability, his explosive playability
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: to run scramble and then also to extend plays and
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: give the receivers more time to open up against man coverage,
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: that's tough to cover too. So if you're gonna play man,
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: like I said, it's got to be with a spy,
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: it's got to be with a contained rush trying to
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: aim to keep him in the court, in the pocket
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: and make throws from the pocket, because if you let
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: him dip and rip like on the pop Douglas one,
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: he's gonna hit bombs down the field against broken coverage,
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: so it's a hard quarterback to solve. I mean, that's
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: what makes them good. But I do think demand stuff
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: in the first half that Cleveland played, they might see
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: a little bit more of that here moving forward. Going
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: over to the defense, I mentioned the script numbers are
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: just insane.
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: Right now, they're giving up seven point eight yards per play.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: They're giving up an explosive play twenty four percent of
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: the time, and the opponent's first two drives of the game,
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: so they are last in the league in yards per
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: play on the first two drives of the game. They
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: then almost cut it in half for the rest of
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: the game. They go from seven point eight in the
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: opening script to four point seven outside of the script.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: On defense, but similar to what we're talking about with
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: the sacks on offense, so far they've gotten away with it.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: The question is when does that run out? It does it,
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: you know, But when and if that luck runs out,
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: you know, are they porked at that point?
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: I mean, look against better offensive teams, it's gonna be
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: much much harder. You can't put yourself in that hole
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: like Tampa. Tampa is the game I'm watching for in
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: that regard.
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: Yeah, So last thing here, the biggest thing that I
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: see with this defense that's still breaking my brain. And
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: I'm going to keep harping on this until they prove
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: me right or proved me wrong. Twenty eighth in the
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: league in past DVA, fourth in the league in scoring.
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: Defense doesn't add up. It doesn't add up. So I
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: looked this up. I went back five years. Over the
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: last five years, eighty percent of the defenses that finished
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: top ten in scoring also finished top ten in past
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: DV away. So the best pass defenses in the league
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: are also the best scoring defenses in the league. Shocker.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: There's always one outlier. Maybe the Patriots are it. The
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: Niners are also another outlier. This season, their pass defense
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: has struggled, but statistically speaking, again, if you continue to
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: play pass defense level, the numbers are telling us that
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: water is going to find its level eventually with the scoring.
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: So can they keep up this level of scoring defense
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: as the stakes ray eyes as the opponents get better.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: If they don't improve significantly as a pass defense, I
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: think is another thing that could come back up. In
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: let's say January, when we're talking about why their season ended,
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: it might be because they faced Patrick Mahomes or Justin
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: Herbert or Josh Allen and they couldn't get off the
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: field on defense and they couldn't stop. I think that
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: there's some truth to that, because you know, in this game,
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: like Dylan Gabriel has Isaiah Bond wide open down the
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: field and misses him. Patrick Mahomes or Justin Herbert or
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: Josh Allen is not missing that throw like this quarterback
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: does you know? Ward? You know has one good half
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: of football, but doesn't have four quarters of good football
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: in Tennessee the week before. You know, this type of
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: stuff might come up to haunt them once they face
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: better teams, so that the good and the bad. I
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: didn't really have anything that got them beat. I thought
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: I did.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: They had some sloppy plays late that against the better
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: team would.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: Would concern me.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Uh on sidekick fumble, yeah, along an onside kick recovery,
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: Travon Henderson fumbling at the goal, and they had some
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: avoidable penalties. Marte Mapu lines up incorrectly on the opening kickoff,
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: a couple third down fall starts at third and one fall.
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: I forget which one was which Hunter Henry and Mike
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: and Wnnu got called for fall start. BA one was
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: on a third and one, which pushed them back to
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: third and five and they stall out and the others
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: on a third and long. But it was at the
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: end of the first half there and temporarily took him
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: at a field goal range if if you know, May
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: doesn't hit that throat a booty, which, by the way,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: you know it's ridiculous. Kishon Boody had that stretch of
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: consecutive catches for a first down. I think it reached
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: twelve and it snaps because he gets twenty three yards
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: on third and twenty four.
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: But this is what I'm talking about, right, Like, they
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: get into third and twenty four and they get knocked
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: out of field goal range before halftime most teams, that's dead, right, Like,
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: that's not your right. But so they hit a twenty
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: one yard pass and they get right back into very
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: makeable field goal range, not just field goal range like
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: under fifty yard old.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: Let's also give Andy burg Alli some credit. He's been
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: really good lately and that's gone under the radar.
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean he's not exactly hitting bombs like you.
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: No forty two is. I mean, it's not a chip shot,
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: but it's manageable.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: But this might like you're right, that usually doesn't happen,
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: which is why I put that penalty in the stuff
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: that gets you beat category. Yeah, they recovered on sidekick,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: the fumbled the goal line, a bad bad chank punt
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: from Bryce Bearing or just like they kind of let
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: go of the rope at the end there, and yeah,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: you know, I'm sure Mike Rabel will that's probably all
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: they've heard about all week.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: So sacks, pass defense, some of the situational football late
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: in the game. You know, those are the things that
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: when you get into a game against a healthy Baltimore,
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: Buffalo Tampa playoffs like those are the things that you
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: hope they can fix. They can fine tune, they can correct,
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: and you know, before the players.
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: You know, it's it's crazy. They they haven't looked like
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: a young team as much as they probably should have
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: at points this year except in those moments. So you
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: hope later in the year, like they don't look like
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: as much of a young team because.
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: They're not as young at that point. Bill Belchick, you
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: said no rookies was once you get past Thanksgiving? Right, Yeah,
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: something like that, Bill Belichick all right, Patty's Patty's in
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: the agoa, we're going to take the casts. I know,
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: I always leave you guys on. Hold, what's up Patty?
- 1:21:28Speaker 7: Hey, what's going on?
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: Guys?
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: How are you doing.
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: Good?
- 1:21:32Speaker 7: So I got a point and a couple questions to
- 1:21:35Speaker 7: end with. I know this is probably not going to
- 1:21:38Speaker 7: be a very popular take, but I don't know if
- 1:21:40Speaker 7: I would want to trade for Trey Hendrickson just because
- 1:21:42Speaker 7: of the age. He's injured right now, and realistically he's
- 1:21:47Speaker 7: been great, he's been a great player, But how many
- 1:21:49Speaker 7: more great years are you going to get out of him,
- 1:21:51Speaker 7: you know, especially like if if he comes here and
- 1:21:55Speaker 7: then he decides to test the market afterwards, So there's
- 1:21:58Speaker 7: you know, trading for somebody like that is a little
- 1:22:01Speaker 7: bit ballatle in my opinion. Alexi brought up their name
- 1:22:04Speaker 7: boy A my fey. I mean, like as far as
- 1:22:06Speaker 7: defensive ends go, I know, like Ard and Key's a
- 1:22:08Speaker 7: popular name. But if you're gonna swing for defenses like Mafe,
- 1:22:11Speaker 7: if he's available, I would, I mean, I would give
- 1:22:13Speaker 7: up a date two picks for that guy. My two questions.
- 1:22:18Speaker 7: A lot of a lot of people bring up Jerome Forard.
- 1:22:21Speaker 7: Alexi brought him up earlier, but and I would I
- 1:22:23Speaker 7: would very much welcome him on the team. But a
- 1:22:25Speaker 7: guy that doesn't get mentioned a lot that I would
- 1:22:27Speaker 7: like to see here, who can he's return kicks in
- 1:22:30Speaker 7: the past, he hasn't done it in the past two years.
- 1:22:32Speaker 7: Is Tony Pollard and he could be your third down
- 1:22:35Speaker 7: running back and possibly get him out there to return kicks.
- 1:22:39Speaker 7: What do you guys feel about that? And Kevin, you
- 1:22:43Speaker 7: you brought up like obviously the sack numbers and the
- 1:22:47Speaker 7: pressure numbers on may we know that during his North
- 1:22:50Speaker 7: Carolina career he did run a lot of RPOs. As
- 1:22:54Speaker 7: the season gets gets a little bit more deep and
- 1:22:57Speaker 7: Josh opens up the playbook, do you think they add
- 1:22:59Speaker 7: a few RPOs a game just to see if we
- 1:23:02Speaker 7: can get the ball out quickly so he doesn't get
- 1:23:04Speaker 7: that quick pressure. And I'll take it off there.
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: Guys, Thanks Pat, thanks for the call. Yeah, they they haven't.
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: They've gone away from some of that stuff, you know,
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: RPO read option. They do it a little bit on
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: the goal line where I don't know if it's a
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: true read option. He might just kind of be threatening
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: the backside to try to like hold the backside and
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: kind of give them pause. But they haven't done a
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: ton of RPO stuff lately. They instead of doing that,
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: they've kind of went more to the boots and the
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: under center and moving the pocket and like getting him,
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: you know, his legs involved that way instead. So I
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: don't know if that's a comfort thing, like maybe he
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: feels more comfortable. I know he did a lot of
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: RPO at college, so you would think that he would
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: be comfortable with that. But it's different in the NFL.
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: One of the big things with RPOs it's different in
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: the NFL is how far down the field you can
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: block legally on RPOs. In the NFL it's I think
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: it's two yards. In college, it's like five or something
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: crazy like that. Yeah, so you see the lineman way
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: further down on the field and the run action in
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: college and that mesh, like you can hold the mesh
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: for a lot longer than you can in the NFL.
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: So I think that that's why you're seeing some of
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: these RPO schemes that have trickled up to the NFL.
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: They haven't been quite as effective since they first kind
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: of broke in with it. Because of that. I think
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: defenses have adjusted, But I would also say, you know,
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: the rules in the NFL with the illegal man downfield
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: penalties is definitely a little bit more restrictive than it
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: is in the college game. And then also like the hashes, right,
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: like you know, there's a lot more space to the
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: field in the college game than there is in the
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: pro game as well. What was the Tony Pollard? Yeah,
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: so yeah, I.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: Feel like that's a guy that you know, I think
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: they're probably looking at in my mind, would be looking
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: to add a third running back. Yeah, and Tony Pollard's
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: the guy with his pedigree and the way he's played.
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: I don't think you want to bury Traveon Henderson. How
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: is he going to handle coming here and being in
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: a third running back role. Weren't there some reports that
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: he didn't love splitting carries with Ezekiel Elliott and Dallas.
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: And I think they probably want to go younger too.
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: You know, Tony Pollard's only twenty eight, but for running
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: back that that's getting up there a little bit. Yeah,
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: now Taja Spears, Yeah, as a you know, five minute back,
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: third running back, the Titans backup running back would make
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: more sense to me.
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: I think if you're gonna go as big as Tony Pollard.
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: Well, at that point you called the Jets about Reese
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: hal and I just don't think that's the kind of
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: back they need to add. They don't need somebody to
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: the top the depth chart. They just need a third guy,
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: a body who's gonna be able to split some carries
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: with Stevenson. I don't know that the Pollard's going to
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: slide into that role.
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: So I I had thought about Tony Pollard during Titans Week, obviously,
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: just because it was relevant at the time. If Remandre's
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: fumbling issues continued and they really had to bench Remandre,
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: then it would make more sense, and I thought I
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: thought it made a lot of sense. Obviously, it's only
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: been two games where he's had it a little bit
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: better under wraps in terms of the fumbling, But it
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: seems like they've he's sort of leveled off in that regard.
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: Red he had to fumble in Buffalo, I think might
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: have been the last one that he fumbled, yes, And
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: so I think that that's hopefully they've kind of corrected
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: that and we're moving past that. If they were in
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: a position where they had to bench Fromandre, Stevenson because
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: of fumbling, then Tony Poller would have made a lot
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: of sense. But because they aren't in that position, I
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: think I'm more with you that they need a third
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: running back. You know, Tajy Spears is a good shout.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: You know, Jerome Ford is a guy just for the
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: kickoff returns to is a good shout. Those types of
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: players more so than you know, Tony Poller is making
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: a lot of money, like Tony Powler's like a ten
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: eleven million dollar a year running back. They're not doing
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: that unless he's starting and he's playing. Now, what was
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: the other thing I was gonna say about the backs?
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: I don't remember. Let's let's keep garling what they calls
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: Sam is in Virginia. What's up to say?
- 1:27:01Speaker 8: Hey, guys, thanks for taking my college.
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: Thanks for waye. I appreciate it.
- 1:27:05Speaker 8: Oh yeah, of course, just one quick question. That's the deadline.
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: No.
- 1:27:10Speaker 8: We opened up the show talking about the dugger trade
- 1:27:15Speaker 8: a little concerned about the safety deaths here. I mean,
- 1:27:19Speaker 8: Jalen Hawkins and Craig Woodson has emerged and seemed like uh,
- 1:27:23Speaker 8: solid starters, but that's just kind of an issue all
- 1:27:26Speaker 8: around their roster, especially in the safety room. Now I'm
- 1:27:29Speaker 8: curious if you could see a trade on the margins
- 1:27:32Speaker 8: for for sue safety help. I don't take it off there.
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: Thanks for the call us, Sam, Yeah absolutely. I mean
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: they signed Sonders from the Dolphins practice squad. That's, you know,
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: similar to signing Richie Grant to their practice squad. It
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: feels very depthy, like that doesn't feel like a guy
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: that could truly step in to a third safety role.
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: I wonder how they feel about del Pettis. You know,
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: maybe they feel like he's made strides behind the scenes.
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: He's a decent find as a rookie, as an undrafted
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: rookie last year, maybe he can be that safety. I
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: would still entertain all safety suggestions. I'll keep pounting the
- 1:28:05Speaker 2: table to try to pry a Moni Hooker out of Tennessee.
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: I don't know if that's just happened last offseason he did. Yeah,
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: I don't know if that's gonna happen, But Tennessee says
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: they're open for business on everybody that isn't Cam Warden
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: and Jeffrey Simmons. So I'm at least making the phone call. Vrabel,
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: guy grew up in that system, would definitely be seamless.
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: Now.
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: With all that being said, Woodson I think has shown
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: enough flashes that I'd like to continue to develop. Craig Woodson.
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: Jalen Hawkins, for what it's worth, is PFF seventh rated safety.
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: He's been playing well.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: I mean, hamstring injuries are tricky, as we've learned this year,
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: but he has been playing well. It's that's in the
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: short term, like, well, this will be different when.
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: We get to the offseason. In the short term, that's more.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: I don't think they need to go out and try
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: to find like somebody who's going to push Hawkins off
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: the depth chart. I just you know, the depth eyes
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: up really quickly. You already have Hawkins dealing with an injury.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: Craig Woodson's been on the injury report. Do they have
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: the bodies there is more of the question for me. Look,
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: I take them on the hooker, certainly, but I think
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: you can get by for this year with Hawkins and Woodson.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: You don't need to move a third round pick at
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: the deadline right to get a new starting safety.
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: Yeah, agreed. I think they figured out with Hawkins, he's
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: just not at man coverage on tight end safety. They
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: got burned a couple times by Brat Bauers and the opener,
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: and I think they kind of were like, all right,
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: we've seen enough. Yeah, that's not his role now that
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: they got him, you know, kind of doing a little
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: bit of everything, playing deep, playing in the box and
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: being more of like a free defender that's just allowed
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: to roam and play over the top and great interception
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: on Sunday, you know, playing the deep part of the
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: field like that's his game. He's not gonna go cover
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: Kyle Pitts one on one. That's not his game. Yeah,
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: So if you're looking for safety type, like that's the type.
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: Like they need somebody to cover the tight end. They
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: tried Marte Mapi. We played one play nineteen yards off
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: the field, right like they They've tried Hawkins not so good.
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: They've tried Woodson not so great. They've tried, you know,
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: just zoning off the tight end. Right now, they're fifth
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: in the league and yards allowed to tight ends. Dalton
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: kick went off against them, brought Bowers went off against
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: them in this game. I think Kyle Pitts could go
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: off against them if he gets the quarterback play that
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: he needs to do. So, so it's a position that
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: is more like a role that they need to fill,
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: Like they need to cover safety. So what about a
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: coverage linebacker. Sure, I don't know if he's going one
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: on one against the tight end, but I like Logan
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: Wilson as a player, Like I think it's an upgrade
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: over Ellis to Vai Gibbons, like at that spot next
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: to Splane. I don't know if he's the answer to
- 1:30:47Speaker 2: all your tight end problems, but I would kick the
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: tires on it just because of the upgrade that it
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: would be at that level. I just I don't know
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: if it's scheme. I don't know if they can do
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: something differently scheme wise. But you know, even Harold Fannon,
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: you know, nineteen yard third down crosser touchdown on an
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: eighteen yard play and Joco got him once.
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: I do think the touchdown was a miscommunication, busty coverage, Yeah,
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: but still yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: They do know they need a tight end stopper, and
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: that's a long term meet. It's a problem. It's been
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: a problem. All right, Let's go back to the phones.
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: Uh Don is in Philly? What's up? Don? Hey? Guys, Hey,
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: how are we doing?
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: Not want us to discuss the secondary really quickly. You know,
- 1:31:32Speaker 3: while the Marcus Jones extension obviously we're gonna have to
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: shell out a lot of cash. Figazol is most likely
- 1:31:38Speaker 3: the SAFT season. What I was looking up Carlton Davis's
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: contract looks like he has like thirty four million guaran speed.
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: That's a lot of cash that's going to be spent
- 1:31:49Speaker 3: towards the secondary. Do you possibly see us unloading Carlton
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: Davis maybe at the end of this year, seeing if
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: we can find a trade partner. It just seems like
- 1:32:01Speaker 3: there's some hold on the defense that we could use,
- 1:32:04Speaker 3: you know, fill that, you know, that linebacker spot, maybe
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: get another stafety somewhere, just because they're also spending so
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: much money on the D line. And secondly, you know,
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: now we have ten draft picks this upcoming year, a
- 1:32:19Speaker 3: lot in the sixth round. Sounds like we're going to
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: try to get some depth, but we really need to,
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: you know, help Drake may out in the long run,
- 1:32:27Speaker 3: and I think Evans said it the other day, we
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: just we can't just keep this same or going forward.
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: I doubt there's going to be a move at the
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: trade deadline for someone that's you know, truly going to
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: change how this roster you know, works this year in
- 1:32:43Speaker 3: terms of Drake's may development. But who are we targeting,
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: you know, maybe in the off season or who do
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: you guys want as like a dynamic playmaker to help
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: Drake May out. And I'll take it off you guys pick.
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: Thanks Don, thanks for the call. You know, I to
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: that last point that that's my feeling on it is
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: just I'll look back at learning from mistakes in twenty
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: twenty one. Yeah, twenty twenty one, you have the big
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: off season, big free agency spending spree, record breaking at
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: the time you draft Mac Jones, he has a decent
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: rookie season, and then your big off season acquisition on
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: offense is Devonte Parker.
- 1:33:20Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: So I don't know how it fits into the puzzle
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: that they're building here offensively, but you need to do
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: something next off season to continue stacking right, and it
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: has to be better than something like davontee. I don't
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: think you need to rebuild the whole thing.
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: But it's just like he said, add a playmaker or two,
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: whether that's in a draft, whether it's in fregency. We
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: talked about, you know, we know Josh McDaniels is happy
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: to go two tight ends. Do you get a more dynamic,
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: you know, yards after the catch tight end next to
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: Duranry's at the move?
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: Do you try to find a you know, it's all right.
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: Booty and Digs ideally would be your one and two
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: receivers again, do you try to find a third guy
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: with a little more explosiveness than Mac Hollins but more
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: consistency than Pop Douglas. Again, maybe that is Kyle Williams,
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: or maybe they go back to the draft a guy
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: like KC. Conception Own or you know, we could go
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: through all that. But to his point about Carlton Davis,
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: it's a it's a yeah, it's an expensive secondary, but
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: it's a good secondary.
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: It's not like, well, I think the point that he's
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: trying to get at, and we can just address the
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: elephant in the room is Christian Gonzalez's future extension and
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: just future period when you're now the thing about Carlton
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: Davis though, you know, before I get into the whole
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: Gonzales of it all, Carlton Davis's contract is really only
- 1:34:45Speaker 2: a two year deal, right, so like in Gonzalez's money
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: doesn't kick in till twenty twenty seven, right, because he's
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: going to sign an extra Well, if he signs an extension,
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: I would asume they're gonna use to do the fifth
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: year option. Well, you can't do it that way. If
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: he signs an extension, then the extension kicks in after
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: his force, so you would have to wait until the
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: fifth year option year to then next sign the agree
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: to the fifth year option and then extend them on
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: top of the fifth year option. Yeah, how they're not
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: going to like say like, oh, we're fifth year option
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: and then like you have to team control for like
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: eight years. Well, it's still only going to overlap for
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: a year. So he has two more pure years on
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: his rookie contract right this year, next year? Yeah, taking
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: out the fifth year. So then if so if if
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: they move on next year and then the following year.
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: So yes, this is year two when when your extension
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: kick in? Year Oh god, now you're making me do
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: math live on the air. So he's going into his
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: fourth year next year, right, twenty two is twenty three,
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: twenty three, twenty four, twenty five, twenty six, twenty six
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: last year and the extent you kick in twenty seven,
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: So that's the hour we're not good at math, and
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: you're making me do it on the air. You and
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: you love the math.
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: Uh, Carlton Davis. The twenty seven year on Carlton Davis's
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: contract is the dumb year.
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: That's what you can get out of.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: You're not gonna be paying both those guys at the
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: same time after next year, after twenty twenty six. It's
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: a real conversation. Yes, I don't think, first of all,
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: there's a ton of dead cap if you do move
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: on from Carlton Davis after this year, at least if
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: you cut him, not if you trade him.
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: But no, they're gonna They're in the Carlton Davis business
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: through twenty twenty six, as they should be. And I've
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: seen people say, oh, it's an expensive secondary. Now I
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: do something.
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: It didn't like sneak up on them that they have
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: an expensive secondary. They didn't Harrod Gonzales, but he's on
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: a rookie contract. They signed Carlton Davis, they signed Marcus Jones.
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: Maybe they want a high priced secondary because they know
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: they value talent back there. And we've talked a lot
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: about how good they are developing pass rushers, and we've
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: seen the work that they've done with calevon Chase on Frankly,
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: the work they've done with Milton Williams as a run
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: player and how he's progressed. He's better than the player
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: he wasn't Philly, and it's credit to him and it's
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: credit to coaching staff. You know, we'll see hopefully maybe
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: some of these younger guys coming up Caleb Murphy and
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: Elijah Ponder and Braden Swinton at some point. But like
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: the Patriots kind of did this in reverse when they
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: had Belichick here, they could develop the hell out of
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: some cornerbacks and so they put more draft resources. They
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: put more financial resources into the front because hey, we
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: can go find Jonathan Jones, j C.
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: Jackson, Malcolm Butler.
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: Now there's obviously exceptions, right Stefan Gilmore, But you build
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: your team around your strengths and weaknesses, and they may
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: look at it, and this is a little over simplified,
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: but they may look at it and say, hey, you know,
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: the guys we have coach in the front, and that's
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: just something that clicks for us, and we can develop
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: guys there better than we can in the secondary. So
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: let's pump some money in the secondary, get set back there,
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: and yeah, maybe we're not working with the same high price,
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: high draft pick guys up front, but we know that
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: we can identify and develop the talent to get more
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: out of those guys than the average team would.
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: So it's just but you have Milon Williams under a
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: big contract, you have a Christian Barmore under a big contract.
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: I wouldn't call Marcus Jones' contract big, but it's for
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: the position. He's well paid now once the extension kicks in.
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: I just think that I'm a little bit on your
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: station side of the street with this. With Gonzales, the
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: Felger and maz take of you know, is he here
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: long term? Is he a rabel guy? Is he are
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: they fully thrilled with him? I just I hope that
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: all that dust kind of settles and they end up
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: extending Gonzales and making him one of the highest paid
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: corners in football. But I'm not fully convinced yet that
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: that is one hundred percent going to happen. That's just
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: my opinion, is not anything else other than a take.
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: But I just I hope that that does happen. But
- 1:38:40Speaker 2: we'll see. I think we'll see, And I don't think
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: that has anything to do with Carlton Davis, by the way, No,
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: it doesn't. It's independent.
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: I think they've We've had that question about a lot
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: of players, and ultimately you can kind of draw a line.
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: I think there are players that we identified as maybe
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: not being rabel guys. The ones that performed are still here.
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: Anthony Jennings played his way back onto this roster. He
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: was not going to make the team at the start
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: of camp. That's just it just looked plain and simple.
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: Then he was really good.
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: The guys that aren't performing are not here, and I
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: think yesterday is a perfect example of that with Keon
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: White and Kyle Dugger. So they're in the business of
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: keeping good football players. And you look at Marcus Jones,
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: another guy did not look like a fit and and
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: just gets an extension. They're in the business of keeping
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: good football players. Christian Zalez is a good football player.
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: Great, I mean he's he looked great against Cleveland. It
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: is not a great wide receiver.
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: Room is not a great How many how many guys
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: that we we kind of put in a box is
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: not verbel Guys are still here that aren't performing, Like.
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: I don't know, that's a tough question for me to answer, Uh,
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: you could say the one maybe on the offensive line.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: He'd been he had a couple of rough weeks, but
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: he was good to start the year. The one I
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: look at maybe is Stevenson with the but they don't
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: really have another option there.
- 1:40:02Speaker 2: Yeah. I just I'm not saying again I I this
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: is not informed at all. I am just telling you
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: that I still think that that prove it thing with
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: Christian Gonzales still exists. We know in the past that
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: Rable hasn't been thrilled about soft tissue injuries and hamstrings,
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: and that thing lingered and took a lot longer than
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: it should have. Now he's starting to come back and
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: look like Christian Gonzalez again. I certainly this last week
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: I think was his best game so far. He's going
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: to but against Buffalo too. Yeah, but I thought that
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: this was his best week so far. So if he
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: finishes the season like this, if he goes nine games,
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: then I think that we are talking tout. This is
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: my point.
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: They're in the business of keeping good football players. If
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: Gonzalz gives them a reason to keep them, they're going
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: to keep them a great I think the one thing
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: you look at and this is big picture. Is guys
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: that because of their contract, because of their draft standing,
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: because of you know, previous leadership or starting roles or whatever.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: Guys that in a vacuum may have more of a
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: leash to work through struggles. On the average team, don't
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: under Mike Vrabel because he's trying to get the program
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: up and running, and he doesn't you know, he didn't
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: draft him that high, he didn't sign him into that contract.
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: He doesn't have that kind of allegiance to them. Those
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: are the guys that you look at and Okay, is
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: he not a rabele guys are gonna go. So if
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: Gonzales were to slip, that conversation comes into play. But
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: like you said, he's been playing well, and if he
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: keeps playing like this, just like Marcus Jones played well
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: and not only hung around, got an extension to a
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: lesser extent, Anthony Jennings played well, kept himself on the
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: team and now is in a role where like they
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: need him and.
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: Is in kind of a that I just, yeah, there
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: was a lot of money, I know what you're saying.
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: Giving the counter Gonzo w and the hamstring thing was happening.
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: I just I'm just giving you the counter to it.
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: I understand. I just think that when we start to
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: look down the road, and again, this isn't about salary,
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: cap space, It's not about any of that kind of stuff.
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: It's just a business. He saw the guy, Yes, but
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: I'm just talking about the money, like we saw this
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: in Dallas with Micah Parsons. Like it's just a business.
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: And when you're going to have to pay the quarterback
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: probably the biggest contract in the history of the NFL,
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: not before long, and then you're gonna also make Gonzales
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: the highest paid corner in the league. And then you
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: also have Milton Williams on a big contract, and you
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: also have Christian barm We're on a big contract. Like
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: this is the problem that good teams have. Like this
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: is the problem that good teams have. The Chiefs ran
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: into it. It's why they traded Tyreek Hill. Like this
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: is a problem that good teams have. I don't want
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: to get bught.
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: Down by the will to say real quick, I want
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: to talk Falcons so quick Milton Williams contract.
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: Comes off the books by the time they pay Track
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: May okay, I mean again, like by what like Drake
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: May is in year two, so he's a contract extension
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: eligible year from January and then he's four years into
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: his rookie contract. Again. I don't want to do math
- 1:42:59Speaker 2: on the air.
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: Extensional hit twenty twenty eight, which is technically last year
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: of Milton Williams deal, but it's it's kind of a
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: dummy year, like it's all there's no dead money on it.
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: Okay, so at the very least they could. I'm not
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: worried about the contracts with the salary. I'm worried about
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: the cash. I'm worried about them having to dole out
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: a probably four hundred million dollars contract by that point.
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: Milton Williams is for the accounting of it, not for
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: when they actually have to start writing them checks.
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: Right, They're not writing I don't think they're writing Milton
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: Williams big checks at that point, is what I'm saying.
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: But the guaranteed money is the guaranteed money, like when
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: he signs the deal, they have to actually put the
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: money in escort actually right, and have to hold the
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: money for drake Man and it'll have been paid at
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: that point. But okay, I don't want to semari money. Yeah,
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: really quickly on the Falcons, I can come to your
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: side of the street for a second. Here with the
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: Atlanta Falcons of offense, I think it's how do I
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: put this playly? I think it's crazy that they're twenty
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: eighth in the league and scoring twenty eighth in the lead.
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: Were scoring with Bijon Robinson, Kyle Pitts, Drake London, Darnell Mooney.
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: A decent offensive line, not like a CIVO. They got
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: some injuries, but yes, Cale McGarry got hurt. That that
- 1:44:15Speaker 2: you know, they're starting right tackles out for the year.
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: That that was big.
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: Yeah they didn't have and they didn't London miss last
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: week and oh sure, but yeah, this.
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: Was happening before. You know, this was getting shut out
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: by the Carolina Panthers, way before any of these, like
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: you know, London and Pennics injury issues started to pop up.
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: Your boy Pennic is not playing particularly well. No he's not.
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: That's upsetting. That's a part of it is does that
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: offense make sense for him? So this offense, to me,
- 1:44:44Speaker 2: you're gonna love this take. This is a social media offense.
- 1:44:48Speaker 2: They do all these fancy motions and dipsy dudes and
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: oh we're gonna have four receivers on one side of
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: the formation and go four strong, and we're gonna motion bijon.
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: He's gonna art outside, and he's gonna motion inside, and
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: he's gonna motion back outside, and he's gonna motion into
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: the pistol and then we're gonna hand him the ball.
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: But then sometimes we're gonna throw them screen and we're
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: just doing all this different stuff, and all these defenses
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: are just letting the Falcons offense go into a blender
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: and then they're just sorting it out after the snap, right,
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: and they're just like, you're doing all this fancy stuff
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: for no reason. No wonder the Dolphins cook them. They're
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: used to seeing that. It's different. The Dolphins motion with
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: the purpose. Yes, yes, the Dolphins and the Rams and
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: the Niners. I can show you physical evidence of the
- 1:45:33Speaker 2: motioning for purpose. This Falcon's team niner. Yes, this Falcons
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: team motions for fun. They motion because it's cool and
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: like that, in my mind is killing them, along with
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: the fact that every freaking time they line up in
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: the pristol they just run outside zone.
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: Yeah right, I don't think they know how to use
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: So I'm a big fan of pistol. I think pistols
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: an underused concept in the NFL. And I say that,
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: and then everybody points to the falcons and say, do
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: you really think that? Look what the falcons are doing.
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: I don't think they're using pistol correctly. First of all,
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: you tell me this. Are they lining up too deep
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: when they're in the pistol? It feels like bijon so
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: far back.
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: I think the biggest issue with them with the in
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: the pistol is that they run the ball seventy one
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: percent of the time out of the pistol, So it's
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: just a dead giveaway what they're doing. And really all
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: they do post nap they run outside zone and they
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: run boot off of outside. They don't do a lot
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: out of it.
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: They don't do a lot at which the whole beauty
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: of pistol is you get to run so many of
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: the under center concepts that are taken away by having
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: to be in the shotgun. Will still getting the view
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: of the shotgun. You can run outside zone out of
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: the shotgun.
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: So if I won, you know two little things on that, yeah,
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: the fact that their quarterback isn't mobiles killing them, because
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: when you run the pistol. The biggest advantage I would
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: say about running the pistol is running readoption and you know,
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: RPOs and stuff like that out of the pistol A
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: la Lamar Jackson, right like that, that's the advantage of
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: being in the pistol. Pennix with his two knees isn't
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: running anywhere. So therefore you just you know what you're
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: getting when they're in the pistol. They are awfully predictable.
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: Out of the pistol. They don't go under center unless
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: it's Victoried formation. Like, they don't run anything from under center,
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: which Penix is good under center. Washington get the quarterback
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: under center, Like, I don't understand that. So their offense
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: makes no sense.
- 1:47:31Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: I like Zach Robinson. I think he's a bright guy.
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: He does Oklahoma state head coach. He does a lot
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: of creative things. He does a lot of bells and
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: whistles that I can clip and put on social media
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: and say, oh, look at this, this is cool. It
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: doesn't lead to anything. It doesn't lead to any production.
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: I'm sorry, I'm ranting on the Falcons offense. It just
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: annoys me. It annoys me when you have talent and
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: you do nothing but frustrates me defensively, really quickly, because
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: we have two minutes. It's good defense. Don't sleep on
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: this defense. Tenth and Dvoa pas number one pass defense
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: in football in terms of yards allowed, Number two pass
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: defense in football in terms of explosive plays allowed. So
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: they don't give up very many big plays. They don't
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: give up a lot of yards in the passing game.
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: It's a strength on strength matters yards in the game.
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: This year, yeah, it's a big time strength on strength.
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: Like the most explosive or second most explosive passing offense
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: in the league with the Patriots against the second most
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: at least explosive pass defense in the in football. I
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: really loved watching their defense and what they do schematically,
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: it's basically Robert Sala's Seattle three. Uh, you know, interpretation,
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: a lot of Cover three, a lot of quarters, but
- 1:48:46Speaker 2: then on third down and pass in obvious passing situations
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: all and I tried to find the the link. I can't.
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: They just like run a Brian Flores Cover zero package
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: just out of nowhere on like third and eight. It's crazy.
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: I don't know who learned it. I don't know where
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: it's coming from. I don't know if they just copied
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: it based off of studying it in the offseason. I
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: can't find a connection between the two coaching staffs. But
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: they're running a lot of fire zone zone pressure on
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: third down where they're dropping five or six guys into coverage,
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: but instead of playing man to man, they're playing zone.
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: Out of those looks, I want nothing to do with
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: that third down pressure package. Isn't an early down game
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: for the Patriots offense. You can run the ball in Atlanta.
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: That's their one wee weakness. Defensively. They're twenty fourth or
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: twentieth somewhere around there in the league in rush EPA.
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: They're giving up a lot of yards to gap runs,
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: you know, downhill power, crack tosses, counter scheme, lead duo,
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: all that good stuff. So you can run the ball
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: on them that maybe can sequence some play action off
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: the run. But the biggest thing I would say with
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: this pass defense, this is a good pass defense, Like,
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: you don't want to necessarily get into a lot of
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: third and long against this Falcons team. A scheme up
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: pressure at a really high level. Dude A Sky's coverage
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: at a really high level, it's fun watch this week.
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: As frustrated as I was watching their offense, I was
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: intrigued by their defense.
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: I will say they can be run on a little bit.
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: So there is that if they can get the run
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: game going again. The one other split that's important, massive,
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: massive indoor outdoor split for this Falcons team.
- 1:50:24Speaker 2: Yeah, they went to the shitter last week, but yeah
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: that was without Pennix. No, they've been bad outside. They've
- 1:50:31Speaker 2: been good in.
- 1:50:32Speaker 4: No.
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: So they played at home last week? What they played
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: at home last week? Oh they did played home last week? Yeah,
- 1:50:36Speaker 2: well they still been good out. You can make it
- 1:50:38Speaker 2: work without Penix, like with and without Penix, within.
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: Without pen Yeah, they have not been a good outdoor team.
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: Their one good road game was indoors.
- 1:50:46Speaker 2: All right, we got to wrap it up. I wish
- 1:50:48Speaker 2: we had more time to vent about the Falcons offense,
- 1:50:50Speaker 2: but we don't. We'll be back next week talk about
- 1:50:53Speaker 2: this Falcons game, talk about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That's
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: going to be a fun game too. So it's a
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: little two game, a little bit of better competition here
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: for the Patriots over the next couple of weeks. But
- 1:51:04Speaker 2: you will be live at noon. I'll see you guys then,
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: and we'll see you guys next week here on Cash
