- 0:33Philippines, drawing some Tagalog stories.
- 0:37This will be a two parter as the stories are a little bit longer,
- 0:40but I wanted the group them together.
- 0:42In the first story, the world is created.
- 0:44And in the second Benito, is a good song.
- 0:47Who never forgets his parents. Okay, let's begin.
- 0:52The creation story. When the world first began,
- 0:57there was no land but only see in the sky between them was a
- 1:01kite, one day, the bird which had nowhere to land, grew tired
- 1:05of lying about. So she stirred up the sea until
- 1:08it through its Waters against the sky.
- 1:12The sky in order to restrain the sea showered, upon in many
- 1:15islands until he could no longer rise, but ran back and forth.
- 1:21Then the sky ordered the kite to land on one of the islands to
- 1:24build her nest and to leave the sea and sky and peace. now, at
- 1:29this time, the land breeze in the sea breeze were married and
- 1:33they had a child, which was a bamboo one day when this bamboo
- 1:37was floating about in the water instruct the feet of the kite,
- 1:41it was on the beach. The bird Angry to anything that
- 1:44we should strike it packed up the bamboo not of one section.
- 1:48Came a man and from another, a woman, Then the earthquake
- 1:53called upon all the birds and fish to see what could be done
- 1:55with these two. And it was decided that they
- 1:58should marry. Many children were born of the
- 2:01couple and from them came all the different races of people.
- 2:06after a while, the parents grew very tired of having so many
- 2:09idling useless children around and they wish to be rid of them,
- 2:13but they knew of no place to send them to Time went on in the
- 2:18children, became so numerous that the parents enjoyed no
- 2:20peace. One day in desperation, the
- 2:24father seized a stick and began beating on them on all sides.
- 2:28This so frighten the children that they fled in different
- 2:31directions seeking hidden rooms in the house.
- 2:35Some concealed themselves in the walls, some ran outside While
- 2:38others hid in the fireplace and several fled to the see.
- 2:43Now it happened that those who went into the hidden rooms of
- 2:46the house later became the chiefs of the islands and those
- 2:50who conceal themselves in the walls became slaves.
- 2:54Those who ran outside were free men, and those who hid in the
- 2:57fireplace became dark. While those who fled to the Sea
- 3:01and we're gone for many, many years.
- 3:03When their children came back, they were liked the end.
- 3:30Okay, in the story of Benito. Benito was an only son who lived
- 3:36with his father and mother, the little village.
- 3:39They were very poor and as the boy Grew Older and saw how hard
- 3:44his parents struggled for their scanty living?
- 3:46He often dreamed of a time when he might be of help to them.
- 3:51One evening while they sat eating their Frugal meal of
- 3:54rice. The father told about a young
- 3:56king who lived in a beautiful palace some distance from their
- 3:59Village and the boy became very much interested.
- 4:04That night when the house was dark and quiet Benito.
- 4:07Lay on his mat, trying to sleep. Thoughts of the young king
- 4:10repeatedly came to his mind and he wished.
- 4:13He were a king so that he and his parents might spend the rest
- 4:16of their lives in a beautiful palace, the next morning, he
- 4:20awoke with a new idea. He would go to the king and
- 4:23asked for work so that he might in that way.
- 4:26Be able to help his father and mother, he spent a long time
- 4:29persuading his parents to allow him to go.
- 4:32However for it was a long journey and they feared that the
- 4:35king might not be gracious. But at last I gave their consent
- 4:39and the boy started out the journey proved tiresome after he
- 4:44reached the palace. He was not at first permitted to
- 4:46see the king but the boy being very Earnest at last secured a
- 4:51place as a But it was a new and Strange World to Bonito would
- 4:57only known the life of the little village.
- 5:00The work was hard but he was happy and thinking that now he
- 5:03could help his mother and father, one day the king sent
- 5:06for him and said I want you to bring me a beautiful princess
- 5:10who lives in a land across the sea, Go at once and if you fail,
- 5:14you shall be punished severely. The boy's heart sank with him
- 5:20for, he did not know what to do, but he answered as bravely as
- 5:24possible. I will my Lord, he left the
- 5:27king's chamber. he at once set out preparing things for the
- 5:31long journey for he was determined to try at least to
- 5:34fulfill the command When all was ready, Benito started, he had
- 5:39not gone far before he came to a thick forest where he saw a
- 5:42large bird bound tightly with strings.
- 5:46Oh my friend pleaded, the bird, please free me from these bonds
- 5:50and I will help you wherever you call on me.
- 5:53Benito quickly release the bird and it flew away calling back to
- 5:56him. That it's name was sparrowhawk.
- 5:59Benito continued, his journey till he came to the Sea.
- 6:03Unable to find a way of Crossing, he stopped and gazed
- 6:06sadly out, over the waters thinking of the Kings thread.
- 6:09If you failed, suddenly he saw swimming towards him.
- 6:12The king of the fishes who asked, why are you so sad?
- 6:17I wish to cross the sea to find the beautiful.
- 6:19Princess answered the boy. Well, get on my backs of the
- 6:23fish and I will carry you across.
- 6:27So Benito stepped on his back and was carried to the other
- 6:29Shore. Sunni met a strange woman, who
- 6:32inquired, what? It was?
- 6:33He saw it. And when he had told her, she
- 6:35said, the princess is being kept in a castle guarded by Giants
- 6:41take this magic sword. For it, will kill instantly,
- 6:43whatever it touches and she handed him the weapon.
- 6:47Benita was more than grateful for her kindness and went on
- 6:50full of Hope. As he approached the castle, he
- 6:54could see that it was surrounded by the many Giants.
- 6:56And as soon as they saw him, they ran out to seize him but
- 6:59they were unarmed for they saw that.
- 7:01He was a mere boy. As they approached, he touched
- 7:05those in the front with his sword and one by one, they fell
- 7:08dead, then the others ran away in a panic left.
- 7:11The castle on Garden. Benito entered.
- 7:15And when he had told the princess of his errand, she was
- 7:17only too glad to escape from her captivity and she set out at
- 7:20once for him for the Palace of the king.
- 7:25At the seashore of the king of the fishes was waiting for them,
- 7:28and they had no difficulty in crossing the sea.
- 7:32And then in journeying through the thick forest to the Palace
- 7:35where they were received with great rejoicing.
- 7:39After a Time, the king asked the princess to become his wife and
- 7:41she replied I will O King if you get the ring I lost in the sea
- 7:46as I was crossing it. The king immediately thought of
- 7:49Benito and sending for him. He commanded him to find the
- 7:52ring, which had lost on The Journey from the Land of the
- 7:55Giants. It seemed like a hopeless task
- 7:58to the boy but anxious to obey his master.
- 8:01He started out at the seaside he stopped and gazed over the
- 8:05waters until to his great Delight.
- 8:07He Saw His Friend the King of the fishes swimming towards him.
- 8:12When he had been told of the boys troubles, the great fish
- 8:15said I will see if I can help you and he summoned all of his
- 8:19subjects to him. When they came he found that one
- 8:23was missing and he sent the others in search of it.
- 8:26They found it under a stone so full that it could not swim in.
- 8:30The large ones took it by the tail and dragged before the
- 8:32king. Why did you not come?
- 8:35When you were called inquired? The kingfish I've eaten so much
- 8:39that I cannot swim. Apply the poor fish.
- 8:44Then the kingfish suspecting, the truth, ordered it cut open,
- 8:48and inside, they found the Lost ring.
- 8:50Bonita was overjoyed at this and expressing his great.
- 8:53Thanks. Hasten with the precious ring to
- 8:55his master. The king greatly pleased
- 8:58carried, the ring to the princess and said, now that I
- 9:02have your ring, will you become my wife?
- 9:04I will be your wife replied, the princess, if you will find my
- 9:07earring that I lost in the forest while I was journeying
- 9:10with Benito. Again the king sent for Benito
- 9:13and this time he was commanded to find the earring but the boy
- 9:17was very weary from his long Journeys.
- 9:19But with no complaint, he started out once more Along the
- 9:23roads through the thick forest, he searched carefully, but with
- 9:26no reward. At last tired and discouraged.
- 9:30He sat down under a tree to rest.
- 9:33Suddenly there appeared before him, a mouse of great size and
- 9:37he was surprised to find out that it was the king of the
- 9:39mice. Why are you so sad as the king
- 9:42Mouse? Because answered the boy, I
- 9:46cannot find an earring which the princess lost as we were going
- 9:49through the forest together. I will help you said the mouse
- 9:53and he summoned all of his subjects.
- 9:56When they assembled, it was found that one little mouse was
- 9:58missing and the King sent the others to look for him in a
- 10:02small hole among the bamboo trees, they found him and he
- 10:05begged to be left alone for he said he was so full that he
- 10:08could not walk. Nevertheless, they pulled him
- 10:12along to their master who upon finding out that there was
- 10:15something hard inside the mouse ordered him cut open and inside
- 10:18they found the missing earring. Benito at once forgot his
- 10:22weariness. And after expressing his great,
- 10:24thanks to the king Mouse, he hastened to the palace with the
- 10:27prize. The king, eagerly seized the
- 10:30earring and presented it to the princess.
- 10:32Again, asking her to be his wife.
- 10:35All my king replied. The princess.
- 10:38I have one more request to make, only granted and I will be your
- 10:42wife forever. The king believing that.
- 10:45Now with the aid of Bonito he could Grant anything inquired.
- 10:49What it was she wished and she replied get me some water from
- 10:53heaven and some from the lower world and I shall ask for
- 10:56nothing more. Once more the king called Benito
- 11:00and sent him on the hardest are in of all.
- 11:04The boy went out without knowing which way to turn and while he
- 11:07was deep in study, his weary feet led him to the forest.
- 11:12Suddenly thought of the bird who promised to help him and he
- 11:14called out sparrowhawk, there was a rustle of wings and the
- 11:18bird swooped down, he told her of his troubles in it said I'll
- 11:23get the water for you. then Benito made to like cups of
- 11:26bamboo, which he fastened to the birds legs and it flew away all
- 11:32day, the boy, waited in the forest and just as night was
- 11:35coming on the bird return, with both cups, full The one on his
- 11:39right foot, he told Benito was from heaven and that on his left
- 11:42was the one from the lower world.
- 11:45The boy, unfasten the cups and then as he was thinking the
- 11:47bird, he noticed that the journey had been too much for it
- 11:51and that it was dying. Filled with sorrow for his
- 11:54winged friend, he waited, and carefully buried it, and then he
- 11:57hastened to the palace with the precious water.
- 12:01When the princess saw that her wish had been fulfilled, she
- 12:04asked the king to cut her into and pour over her water from
- 12:07heaven. The King was not able to do
- 12:10this, so she cut herself. And then is he poured the water
- 12:13over her? He beheld, her grow into the
- 12:15most beautiful woman. He had ever seen.
- 12:17He had to become more handsome himself.
- 12:20The king them, begged her to pour the water over him, from
- 12:23the other cup. He cut himself.
- 12:25And she did as he requested, but immediately there arose.
- 12:28A creature. Most ugly and horrible to look
- 12:30upon which soon vanished from out of sight.
- 12:34And the princess called Bonito and told him that because he had
- 12:37been so faithful to his master and so kind to her.
- 12:40She chose him for her husband. They were married to make great
- 12:44festivities and became king and queen of that Broad and fertile
- 12:47land. During all that great rejoicing.
- 12:51However, Bonito never forgot his parents, one of the finest
- 12:54portions of his kingdom, he gave to them.
- 12:56And from that time, they all lived in great happiness.
- 13:01The end. This is the second part of the
- 13:35Tagalog folklore Series. Today, we are covering the third
- 13:38and fourth story. From this section, all about
- 13:41Juan food, just keeps getting into trouble and everyone thinks
- 13:44he's a liar. Some Tagalog words, bolo is a
- 13:48large knife and tuba is an alcohol made from coconuts.
- 13:53Okay, let's begin. The Adventures of Juan.
- 14:00One was always getting into trouble.
- 14:02He was a lazy boy and more than that, he did not have good
- 14:05sense. When he tried to do things, you
- 14:08made such Dreadful mistakes that he might better.
- 14:11Not have tried. His family grew very impatient
- 14:14with him, scolding him and beating him whenever he did
- 14:17anything wrong. One day, his mother who was
- 14:20almost discouraged with him. Gave him a bolo and sent him to
- 14:23the forest. Push.
- 14:24He thought he could at least cut firewood.
- 14:27Juan walked leisurely along, contemplating some means of
- 14:30escape. And at last, he came to a tree
- 14:32that seemed easy to cut and then he drew his long knife and
- 14:34prepared to work. Now, it happened that this was a
- 14:37magic tree and it said to Juan, if you do not cut me, I will
- 14:42give you a goat that shakes silver from its whiskers.
- 14:45This please one wonderfully both because he was curious to see
- 14:49the goat and because he would not have to chop the wood.
- 14:53He agreed. It wants to spare the tree,
- 14:55whereupon the bark separated and a goat stepped out.
- 14:59Juan commanded it to shake its whiskers.
- 15:01And when the money began to drop, he was so delighted that
- 15:04he took the animal and started home to show his treasure to his
- 15:07mother. On the way he met a friend who
- 15:10was more cunning than Juan and when he heard of the boys Rich
- 15:13goat, he decided to Rob him. Knowing one's fondness for tuba.
- 15:18He persuaded him to drink and while he was drunk, the friend
- 15:21substituted. Another goat for the magic wand.
- 15:24As soon as he was sober, again, one hastened home with the goat
- 15:28and told his people of the wonderful tree, but when he
- 15:31commanded the animals shake its whiskers.
- 15:32No money fell out. The family, believing it to be
- 15:36another one of once tricks, beaten, scolded, the poor boy.
- 15:41He went back to the tree and threatened to cut it down for
- 15:43lying to him, but the tree said, no, do not cut me down and I
- 15:47will give you a net, which you may cast on dry ground or even
- 15:50in the Treetops and it will return full of fish. so one
- 15:55spared the tree and started home with his Precious net, but on
- 15:59the way he met the same friend who again, persuaded him to
- 16:01drink tuba, While he was drunk, the front, replace the magic,
- 16:05net with a common one. So that when one reach home and
- 16:09tried to show his power, who's again the subject of ridicule.
- 16:13Once more one went to his tree this time determined to cut it
- 16:16down but the offer of a Magic Pot always full of rice and
- 16:20spoons, which provided him, whatever, he wished to eat with
- 16:23his rice, dissuaded him. And he started home happier than
- 16:27ever. Before reaching home.
- 16:30However, he met with the same fate as before and his folks or
- 16:34becoming tired of his pranks, beat him harder than ever
- 16:39thoroughly angered wants up the tree for a fourth time and was
- 16:43on the point of cutting it down. When once more at arrested his
- 16:46attention, After some discussion, he can send it to
- 16:50accept a stick to which he only had to say, boomba boomba and it
- 16:55would beat and kill anything you wished.
- 16:59When he met his friend on the trip, he asked what he had.
- 17:02And he replied, oh, there's only a stick, but if I say, boom, ba
- 17:07boom, ba it will beat you to death.
- 17:10At the sound of the magic words. The stick leap from his hands
- 17:13and began beating his friend until he cried.
- 17:16Oh! Stop it.
- 17:17And I will give you back everything I stole from you.
- 17:20One ordered the stick to stop and then he compelled the man to
- 17:23lead the goat to carry the net, in the jar and the spoons to his
- 17:26home. They're one commanded, the goat
- 17:30and it shook his whiskers until his mothers and brothers had all
- 17:32the silver, they could carry. Then the eight from the magic
- 17:36jar and spoons and totally were filled.
- 17:38And this time Juan was not scolded.
- 17:41After they had finished one said, you have beaten me in
- 17:44scolded me all my life and now you are glad to accept my good
- 17:48things. I'm going to show you something
- 17:50else. Boomba.
- 17:53Boomba immediately the stick leaped out and beat them all
- 17:56until they beg for mercy and promise that one route Ever
- 18:00After be the head of the house. From that time.
- 18:04One was a rich and powerful, man, but he never went anywhere
- 18:07without his stick. One night when some thieves came
- 18:11to his house. He would have been robbed and
- 18:13killed. Had it not been for the magic
- 18:14words. Boom.
- 18:15Ba boom ba. Which caused the death of all
- 18:18the robbers. Sometime after this, he married
- 18:22a beautiful princess. And because of the kindness of
- 18:24the Magic Tree, it always lived happily.
- 18:28The end and the next Story.
- 18:53One gathers guavas. One day wants father, sent him
- 18:57to get some ripe guavas for a number of the neighbors had come
- 19:00in and he wanted to give them something to eat.
- 19:04One went to the guava, Bush, and they all the fruit.
- 19:06He could hold. And then he decided to play a
- 19:09joke on his father's guests instead of giving them a feast
- 19:12of guavas. A wasp's nest hung nearby with
- 19:17some difficulty. He succeeded in taking it down
- 19:20and putting it into a tight basket that he had brought home
- 19:22for the fruit. He hastened home, and gave the
- 19:25basket to his father, and then he left the room where the
- 19:28guests were seated. He closed the door and fastened
- 19:30it. As soon as wants father opened
- 19:33the basket, the Wasps flew over the room.
- 19:36When the people found the doors locked, they fought to get out
- 19:38of the windows. After a while, One open the
- 19:42door. When he saw the swollen faces of
- 19:43the people he cried what? Fine, Rich guavas, you must have
- 19:47had they have made you all so fat.
- 19:51The end. I really like the story Benito.
- 20:19The way that he was faithful and kind, and I like that and he
- 20:24gets the reward in the end and she chooses him.
- 20:28I love seeing that in the book. And the first one, I was just
- 20:31kind of an interesting way of explaining why people have
- 20:34different colors. I like that, there was bamboo
- 20:37and there's a kite and there was no land, but then the kite is
- 20:41splashing up the water like, okay, okay, you can have some
- 20:43land, that was all just kind of fun.
- 20:47But I like the magic stick story with the Magic Tree, it reminds
- 20:53me of a couple other stories where I was one from the Azores
- 20:56where the magic sifter and the magic.
- 20:59This is the magic that and, you know, the guy gets promised
- 21:01these magic things in comes home, and eventually has to go
- 21:04back and get all of them because he's lost them someplace, but
- 21:07it's good to see them fulfilling those needs.
- 21:11Like, I'm hungry. That's, that's our big concern
- 21:13is, I'm hungry. Oh, I'm worried about Being
- 21:16safe. That's my other worry about
- 21:18having enough money. Okay, that's the other word, not
- 21:20having a food in those of the big worries.
- 21:23And then one with the guavas, man, he is just a jerk getting
- 21:29everybody's faces all stabbed up and then oh oh yeah.
- 21:33That's uh, they've made you fat. I hope he gets it.
- 21:39I hope he gets his comeuppance and the podcast.
- 21:44Shout out is to the Sleepytime. Al's podcast if you like what I
- 21:48do, but don't want to stop and Rewind because you missed a part
- 21:51of the story. Go and give Dave a listen.
- 21:54He's got a very laid-back Boise and reads long sections of any
- 21:57old public domain text. Just to get you off to sleep,
- 22:01you can listen to philosophy. Classics are textbooks or
- 22:05anything else. They finds out on Guttenberg.
- 22:08So go and give him a listen and give them a review wherever you
- 22:12were listening to this and The Listener.
- 22:14Shout-out is to Cairo Egypt. A city that is home to 20 1.3
- 22:19million people and is one of the largest cities on the continent.
- 22:23It started out as Foose taught and had neighboring cities of
- 22:26Memphis and heliopolis and the Roman Fort of Babylon.
- 22:30Currently there's some very cool history being researched in the
- 22:34Cairo genizah project, which is sifting through the old paper
- 22:37trash of the old synagogue of Cairo.
- 22:41I have friends who have lived in Egypt or are from Egypt, like
- 22:45nor and Nasheed. Also I fell in love with the
- 22:48city through the writings of Nuggie mahfouz and I hope to
- 22:51visit there someday so to my friends and al-masri, thank you
- 22:56and good night.
