- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I'll start by explaining why praising staff is so great for you.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: I didn't used to praise staff members very much, probably similar to many managers.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: I didn't really know how to praise well and was not confident in using praise.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: It felt a lot easier to only praise really good worker results.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Then I worked alongside a manager that praised his team a lot.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: He really went out of his way to find opportunities to praise.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: After observing him giving all this praise, I realised he was very intelligent about it, giving praise about the results, activities, behaviours, decisions, etc.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: that helped the team reach its goals.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Even more impressive was the impact of the praise on the manager's team.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Staff worked that much harder so they could earn that praise.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: They were happy, motivated, and really working at producing their best.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: A big light bulb went off for me.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: From that point on, I worked at how to praise staff at work.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: I gave praise a lot more and for specific thought-out reasons.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Everyone likes to be appreciated and feel valued, which is exactly what giving praise to others provides.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Giving praise creates positive reinforcement and action.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: People will work harder and do more of the things that earn them praise from others.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: This is a core fundamental part of human nature.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: As a manager, the more intelligently you give praise and the more praise you give, the happier, more motivated and higher performing your team is likely to be.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: And at a personal level, we like people who like us.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: We work harder for those giving us praise and we like them more compared to those that don't give praise.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Giving genuine praise as a manager helps you create a positive and enjoyable working environment.

- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Every time you give praise, you are communicating.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: I like what you have done.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Please do more of that.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Spend time thinking about the types of decisions, actions, behaviors, and results that you want your team to display or achieve and what will help your team reach their goals and targets quicker.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: When you have a clear list in your mind, start actively looking for all the decisions, actions, behaviors, and results your team displays or achieves that meets your expectations.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Praise these consistently and publicly.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Be careful to avoid praising anything that falls short of your reasonable expectations.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: This approach reinforces and communicates your expectations to team members every day and week.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Lastly, always make sure your praise is genuine, that you are truly pleased with what the other person has done.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Show your positive emotions and appreciation when giving praise.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Next, when improving how to praise staff at work, make your praise specific.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: It is really easy to give very general praise and compliments like, you know, well done or good job or great work.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Of course, do give these types of compliments when staff have members have actually earned them.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: To make your praise stand out, remain memorable and maximise the chances of repeat action, make your praise specific.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Specific praise should cover exactly what they did, the impact of what they did and why it was so good.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Giving specific praise takes a bit of thinking through before giving it.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: This extra effort is an investment of your time that you'll get back many times over and improve motivation, performance and goodwill.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: I can still remember specific pieces of praise given by great managers years and decades later.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: I can't say the same about general plays like well done.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Give as much specific praise as you practically can.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Finally, let's cover where to give praise, you know, public praise versus private praise.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: There are lots of ways to give praise.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: Four good methods are you know firstly give spoken praise face to face.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Second, write your praise down, you know, in an email, newsletter, report, etc.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Third, give public praise in meetings, and fourth, provide prizes and awards along with the praise.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Most of these you can do publicly or privately.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: Which you choose depends on the situation and the person receiving praise.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Some people really don't like to receive praise in public in front of their peers.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Others love receiving praise publicly.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Do take the individual's preference into account so they feel comfortable and receptive to receiving praise.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: I do recommend that you give a good portion of your praise publicly.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Doing so advertises good decisions, actions, behaviours, and results to the rest of the team.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: This is a great way to set expectations, provide an incentive for team members to meet those expectations, and demonstrate how to praise staff at work.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: In summary, giving regular praise to staff at work is a really important management action too.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Firstly, demonstrate appreciation and to show you value staff members.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Secondly, to create a positive, enjoyable team atmosphere and culture.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Third, you praise to communicate expectations and provide incentives for staff to meet those expectations.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: And fourth, praise is a great way to provide positive reinforcement and get people to do what is in the best interests of the team culture and performance.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Do make your praise specific and genuine.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: When you start looking for decisions, actions, behaviours, and results to praise, you'll find a lot worth praising in most teams.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: To start with, give yourself a target, you know, say giving one piece of specific praise each day.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: It won't be long before you are comfortable and good at giving praise.
