- 0:53of the Yeah, Buddy podcast.
- 0:56All right, so if y'all are a returning friend, I thank y'all for tuning in.

- 1:01And if you are a new friend, tuning into the podcast, welcome,
- 1:04man. Take a seat and grab a listen.
- 1:05You know how we do, like every episode, I try to bring my friend in from the
- 1:08entertainment business, actor, comedian, filmmaker, and we just sit down,
- 1:12chop it up, and just see what we got going on in the entertainment business.
- 1:14This is going to be a little special couple of episodes that we got going on
- 1:18because it's award seasons right now and in Hollywood.
- 1:21So in Sacramento, last year, a year and a half ago, we made the movie One Battle After Another.
- 1:26And right now it's one of the heavy favorites for this award season.
- 1:29So we're just going to bring on my friend Brandon Larson.
- 1:32He was on the show previously, so y'all might remember him. And we're just going
- 1:35to talk about one, our experience working on the movie One Battle After Another.
- 1:38And then we're just going to get into select awards predictions,
- 1:40how we think it's going to go compared to some of our other favorite movies
- 1:43that we may have or may have not seen this year.
- 1:47So, yeah, we're going to get it started right now, man. I want y'all to make
- 1:49it live and make it live for my good friend, Mr. Brandon Larson in the building, actor, filmmaker.
- 1:55Hey, everybody. Hey, I really thought that I'm doing well, and I like your new theme music.
- 2:01So, awesome. I enjoyed it. Yeah, man, don't tell nobody. It's AI.
- 2:07Yeah, don't tell nobody. It's AI, though. Yeah. Well, they just listen,
- 2:11but it's all good. For sure.
- 2:15Yeah let's do a deep diver quickly yeah
- 2:19let's do a deep diver quickly uh before we do i know we're going
- 2:22to get into one battle after the other but talk
- 2:25a little bit i know we did talk about this like pre-record but just
- 2:28give people a little update about what you have what you've been up to
- 2:31since the last time you've been on the podcast because you have a
- 2:33lot of cool stuff going on especially if we're talking about scar and
- 2:37then even the other productions that you got started working on absolutely yeah
- 2:40so my next film that's pretty much done is raven
- 2:43motel so that's just nearly
- 2:46finished it's loosely based on
- 2:49the raven from edgar allen poe so we got that going and then i've got two other
- 2:54films as well in the works so that's coming too so like to keep it local here
- 3:01in sacramento so that's that's what i'm about yes sir man we're looking forward
- 3:05to So he was like, you got a busy, busy 2026.
- 3:08But let's take it back. Let's take it back a little bit to working on one battle after another.
- 3:14Nobody knows what one battle after another is. It is a movie that was written
- 3:17and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tiana Taylor.
- 3:24Regina Hall. Sean Penn. Yeah, Sean Penn's a crazy character in that movie.
- 3:28And the new actress on the scene, Chase Infinity.
- 3:31So yeah. Oh, and Benicio Del Toro. So star-studded cast, star-studded cast.
- 3:37And they filmed that here in Northern California.
- 3:40They filmed it like the Humboldt area for like a little while.
- 3:43They filmed the downtown Sacramento area for about 30 days.
- 3:47And then I know when you was working on it, they had filmed out. It was Stockton?
- 3:51Yeah, that's where I was. I had to go out in the pouring rain.
- 3:55It was like crazy conditions. And you wake up really early.
- 4:00You get your wardrobe ready. You check in. I think that's the hardest part is
- 4:05just getting the wardrobe together.
- 4:08But my experience was a lot of waiting around. And then when they're ready, you got to be ready to go.
- 4:15And getting to see people like Leo in person at work is just...
- 4:20It's quite an experience.
- 4:22I don't know if you had a similar experience, but for me, I had a lot of takeaways
- 4:26as an actor getting to watch him work.
- 4:29Actually, I apply what I learned just by watching him, getting that opportunity to watch him.
- 4:35And so he's very specific with his movements and he does it the same way every
- 4:40time, but he allows for a new emotional response each different take.
- 4:46So that's what he does and I really enjoyed
- 4:49that plus getting to see Paul Thomas Anderson direct
- 4:53in person was awesome he's very giving to his actors so getting to witness that
- 5:00was obviously a dream come true too yeah that is one thing I will take away
- 5:06from being on the set and working with the actors and the crew in general because
- 5:10um a lot of times I feel like when,
- 5:13productions come from LA, they come up here to Northern California or just anywhere
- 5:16outside of LA they kind of.
- 5:20Don't have a certain level of respect for like the filmmakers like
- 5:23in the community or whatever because you know it's la it's hollywood
- 5:26or whatever but i will say like working on all that
- 5:30film set that was one of the ones where like as big
- 5:33uh like a-list stars that you know was in that movie that
- 5:37they was all pretty down to earth and pretty pretty
- 5:40chill if you want to like talk to them they was pretty cool with.
- 5:43Answering questions they was understanding that like hey i'm like a guest in your
- 5:45home kind of thing for sure for sure
- 5:48but yeah no i i really enjoyed the experience and
- 5:51that was my first time on a major motion picture
- 5:55so getting that opportunity doesn't come
- 5:58around for us here up in northern california like you said
- 6:01and so i think that that's what makes this makes this movie
- 6:04special to a lot of us and to see it doing so
- 6:07well that's great i mean so many standout
- 6:10performances too like you were saying chase
- 6:13infinity she's gonna have a
- 6:15big big acting career like i
- 6:18can predict that for her after that she's i'm
- 6:22sure people are calling her agent left and
- 6:25right right and then
- 6:29tiana taylor too oh yeah yeah
- 6:31did you see tiana on set yes i did yeah
- 6:34i got her and yeah her and
- 6:37leo were in a scene and what's interesting
- 6:40about that that you mention it when we watched
- 6:43the film in imax they
- 6:47cut so much out of it so i expected to see like you know a couple minutes but
- 6:53they get it down to the second so uh but i can pinpoint each scene that i was
- 7:00In and where they cut So that's That was an interesting Quote-unquote take That I have,
- 7:07Yeah That is one thing I'll take away from like When you're working on.
- 7:11Like movies and just how like
- 7:14precision and just precise everything
- 7:17is because like that like you said they cut out a lot of stuff you know
- 7:20scenes that you that you was in not to tell you that you was in but you
- 7:23know the scenes that you was watching you see like the finished result like
- 7:26it kind of got cut but at the same time like that movie
- 7:29didn't feel like it was really missing anything or it also didn't feel
- 7:32like it needed to add anything to it you know oh yeah
- 7:35definitely not adding anything to it in fact they
- 7:38they could have cut a little bit more and i
- 7:41think the story would have worked you know because
- 7:44it takes so many different turns twists and turns
- 7:47but at the heart of the story it's about
- 7:50a father who's trying to find his daughter that that
- 7:53was my take like that's that's the heart of the story right
- 7:56and it's just some beautiful moments in the
- 7:58film i really love the shot of leo and
- 8:02tiana taylor's character with their baby you
- 8:05know with their baby girl like that's just such a lovely
- 8:08moment in the film probably my favorite
- 8:11my favorite like picture if you will yeah yeah i definitely need to go back
- 8:17and give it a re-watch but i think probably like my favorite i guess you would
- 8:23say like my favorite part is just the dynamic the relationship between leo and
- 8:26his daughter and then also with benicio del toro i think that was.
- 8:30Like a little i'd say that'd be like a little buddy cop movie or not a cop movie
- 8:34but just a little you know buddy road trip type of movie or something it was
- 8:37weird like every character that interact yeah every character that like interacted
- 8:40with each other could have like,
- 8:42their own like spin-off movie or something like you could do a whole you could
- 8:45do a whole spin-off of like sean pitt's character how he even how he got that
- 8:49walk because i'm pretty sure that that wasn't no normal walk he had to get that
- 8:52walk from some sort of accident for sure.
- 8:59But yeah then when i was working on the movie so yeah i was i was working on
- 9:02when they was filming down here and um in the downtown sack area so it was in
- 9:05the courthouse or whatever you could actually see me in the movie like i got
- 9:08a quick quick split second like you could see me walking across the street right
- 9:13before the title card comes up and stuff like that so,
- 9:16that that that right there i would say it was pretty cool really cool even if
- 9:20it's only for like 0.5 seconds or whatever it may be you know i'll freeze frame
- 9:24that it'd be all like here we are, you know, you're in it. It was cool. It was cool.
- 9:28Yeah, I'm in it. I'm in it. And I got proof and I got proof, you know, so.
- 9:32That was cool. And then I honestly, I was bored, but I was upset because one
- 9:37of my favorite TV shows growing up was watching The Wire.
- 9:40Well, not growing up, but once I got older, I was able to go back and re-watch The Wire.
- 9:44And so seeing Wood Harris, that to me was kind of like, if I had to meet the
- 9:50Order of Actions, I wanted to meet Regina, didn't get a chance to.
- 9:53I wanted to meet Tiana, didn't get a chance to. But I at least met Wood,
- 9:56so that was cool. I'll take that. That's awesome.
- 10:00And it was cool because during the all the stuff like
- 10:03during downtown we got to see and we're not spoiling too much of the
- 10:05movie but we was able to see the car
- 10:08chase scenes and a lot of the stunt work oh yeah and seeing
- 10:12how that works that that's that's like like seeing
- 10:15the stunts go that's almost like yeah you're on the movie set but it's almost
- 10:19like you're watching you're watching a movie you know you're on a movie watching
- 10:22a movie type of thing it's crazy yeah the car chase scenes were extremely well
- 10:28done and it just thinking about all the logistics that have to go into that you know,
- 10:34the safety concerns that you might have with, with some of these things,
- 10:39but they're, they're pros, right?
- 10:41That when you go, when you get to set and you know, like you're,
- 10:45you know, you're at the top of your game when you're there.
- 10:48And even if you're an extra, you're still a part of it. You get to experience
- 10:53it. That's, you've got to start somewhere.
- 10:55Right. And so I think just being able to have that opportunity to see if it's
- 11:01something that you really like is it's special.
- 11:04And so it just confirmed for me that this is the industry that I want to be in.
- 11:09Yeah. Yeah. What were you able to take away from like working on that film that
- 11:13you was able to take away to apply to like the other films that you have produced?
- 11:18Right. Yeah. And, and that's a good question. I would say how Paul Thomas Anderson
- 11:24is with his actors, but also how things are organized on set from food, you know,
- 11:31you got to bring in the food And when you're an independent filmmaker,
- 11:35you're having to do all these things yourself.
- 11:37So you're wearing multiple hats to save costs.
- 11:41We don't have millions of dollars when we're making short films.
- 11:45But something like this, I found it interesting that even with the millions of dollars,
- 11:53there's certain departments in major motion pictures that need more help,
- 12:00like wardrobe, for instance.
- 12:02They only had two people to do everybody. You know what's weird?
- 12:05That's almost how it usually is. That's almost how it usually is on a film set.
- 12:09There's usually only about maybe two or three people that manage the whole wardrobe,
- 12:13which is crazy. That's why, like I say, like, when you watch like the credits
- 12:16at the end of the movie, like, bro.
- 12:18People don't understand just how much hard work goes into making the movie outside
- 12:21of just, you know, see the people who work on the in front of the camera,
- 12:25like all the stuff like well, of course, be busting their ass.
- 12:28Exactly. That's exactly right. And so and but it prepares you,
- 12:33I feel you can take what you learn from that experience, like you were saying,
- 12:38and and apply that to the next time you're on set and what the expectations
- 12:44are of how to be professional on set.
- 12:46But, you know, we really can't go up to Leo and start having a long conversation
- 12:51because everybody wants their photo with Leo to talk to Leo.
- 12:55But it's it's against the rules, at least for us to, you know,
- 13:00talk to him unless he comes up to us and and asks us something like he came
- 13:04up to me and asked me where the restroom was.
- 13:07And so, you know, I can talk to him in that case.
- 13:10But but, you know, we're we all have our job to do.
- 13:14Right. So we report to an assistant director and they tell us what to do.
- 13:19And so there's a chain of command involved. And I think that that's what really
- 13:23makes things go smoothly, not only on that set, but on my sets, too.
- 13:28So just letting people do their job, right, and trying not to interrupt people's process.
- 13:34Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. All right, Matt. So you want to take a deep dive into this awards season?
- 13:41Absolutely. yeah we just had the we'll follow back up later with the Critics
- 13:45Choice Award but we'll start with the most relevant one the Golden Globes Golden
- 13:48Globes was just this past weekend one battle after another it was nominated for was it about nine.
- 13:54Nine nominations and it won four Golden Globes yeah and that was the most for that night right,
- 14:01Yeah, that's my understanding is that it was the most.
- 14:04And so that that kind of gives you an idea of where this is going when it's doing well like this.
- 14:13Yeah, good. It's a good indication for what the Oscars are going to look like.
- 14:19You know me i personally i'm team sinners but because one battle
- 14:22after another i gotta give to the whole team but i'm i'm
- 14:25rooted for sinners and i was rooting for
- 14:28frankenstein i really liked frankenstein a
- 14:31lot i i love the art and the makeup and the
- 14:35whole just the acting everything about
- 14:38it it just it really sucked me into the story so
- 14:41yeah and the thing the unfortunate thing
- 14:44about like frankenstein as sinners is that like these award shows
- 14:47they don't really understand horror movies you
- 14:51know this so so like just like i
- 14:54mean it's hard to have a good storyline in a horror movie you
- 14:57know let alone it be something like on this this type of magnitude and stuff
- 15:01like that so yeah i just think that's that's the only well that's not the only
- 15:05thing we can get into that later but that's that's one of the things that i
- 15:08feel that's that would be holding back those films but no let's get into it
- 15:12with the one battle after another the first award that it had won was, oh,
- 15:18best, what was it? Best performance.
- 15:22Oh yeah, we'll start with best picture. So yeah, it won best picture for a musical or comedy.
- 15:27And one thing that's interesting about the Golden Globes is when it comes to
- 15:29the movies and the TV, they divide it up between drama and then musical slash comedy.
- 15:36So that almost makes it a very tight race when it comes down to the Oscars.
- 15:40So let's get into the nominees real quickly for best motion picture, musical, or comedy.
- 15:45We had Blue Moon, Sony Pictures Classic, Begonia from Focus Features, Marty Supreme from A24,
- 15:53No Other Choice from Neon, Novel Beg from Netflix, and then of course One Battle
- 15:59After Another from Warner Brothers, which won for Best Musical or Comedy.
- 16:03I don't think there was really any two surprises there.
- 16:06No, I don't think so either. Yeah, that was pretty... No surprises there, like you said.
- 16:13Have you got a chance to see any of these other movies that was nominated?
- 16:16Yeah, I've seen four of them. I still need to see Marty Supreme.
- 16:21So I want to definitely check that out, especially since Timothee Chalamet took it down for Best Actor.
- 16:29Yeah, man. He's been on a run, too. I feel like ever since last year at the
- 16:32Academy Awards, I think he was nominated, but he lost.
- 16:35I think ever since that he's been on a tear like he's basically been campaigning
- 16:39for you know the best actor for this
- 16:43year's Oscars he's basically been campaigning for it since last year so.
- 16:47From that standpoint I haven't seen Marty Supreme either but I know Timothy
- 16:51Chalamet he's doing his thing with that as far as promoting it and marketing
- 16:54it and you know make sure it's out there because it hasn't really gone,
- 16:59a wide release yet I don't think not too much of a wide release,
- 17:03but just enough to get some buzz around it because a lot of people are like
- 17:06I never heard of that movie, I never heard of that movie but 824 do what 824 does 824 does.
- 17:12Yeah. Begonia. Did you see Begonia? I did. Yeah, that was a weird one.
- 17:18I thought, yeah, I saw bits and bits of it.
- 17:20Yeah, it's pretty good. It's different. It's unlike anything I've seen.
- 17:26So I think it was interesting and I do think that it deserved a nomination.
- 17:30But in terms of actually winning anything, I don't know.
- 17:34I was impressed by Jesse Plemons, the actor.
- 17:38I thought he was like the standout for me in terms of acting wise,
- 17:43but I thought it was an interesting script and interesting premise,
- 17:47but I just think it's too weird to win any awards, to be honest.
- 17:53I think Frankenstein's going to win.
- 17:56If Frankenstein doesn't win for best start, there's something wrong because
- 18:01they built a life-size ship for that and they built it in a parking lot.
- 18:08So if you go to that trouble to building a big vessel, I think you should win an award, don't you?
- 18:16Yeah. No, yeah, most definitely. Most definitely. And we'll see.
- 18:18Like I said, Begonia kind of falls.
- 18:20I feel like it falls in with Sinners and Frankenstein, where it's those kind
- 18:24of sci-fi type of thing where the people that are voted, they don't really get it.
- 18:29But, yeah, like I said, we don't really got too much. Yeah, one map to another
- 18:33is probably going to clear it. He's probably going to take on all the awards for Best Picture.
- 18:37I agree. Yeah.
- 18:40But the one that did sneak up and surprise me was when Hamnet won for Best Drama.
- 18:47I know there's totally different categories, but now I got to go back and watch
- 18:51that one because I'm all like, wait a minute.
- 18:53Because that's what, you know, the Academy Awards, they tend to lean more towards,
- 18:57you know the the films that they recognize is those dramas and
- 19:00those those romance movies so now i kind of got to go
- 19:03back and watch this one just to just to see that was like all
- 19:06competitions get it stiff for sure yeah no
- 19:09you're absolutely right i saw sentimental value
- 19:12i thought that was a good i think that's something that
- 19:15might be a sleeper because it was really well
- 19:18shot and the acting was incredible uh stellan
- 19:21scarzard won for best actors so he
- 19:24he was a surprise i think in the golden
- 19:27globe for me uh winning best supporting actor yeah
- 19:30yeah and so that and him winning and
- 19:33also tiana taylor getting the win for best supporting actress was a nice surprise
- 19:40for me i don't know about you but it was a really nice surprise to see her win
- 19:45you know what's interesting is that they people have been saying that for a
- 19:49long time they were saying whoever gets the nominee for Best Supporting Actress,
- 19:52whether it's Tiana or Regina.
- 19:55They said those were kind of like the lock. One of those two is going to be
- 19:59the lock-ins for it. It's great to see Tiana doing her thing.
- 20:03Because she's had a long journey, right? She started in the music industry.
- 20:09She started in the music industry, yeah. And most people would remember her
- 20:12from, she was on that MTV show, Super Sweet 16.
- 20:16Like, you know, that's, you know, so.
- 20:19See her go through just her journey in the entertainment we're
- 20:22not gonna talk about like you know personal stuff or anything like that but just her journey
- 20:25growing through the through the entertainment business it's
- 20:28a wonderful thing to see well yeah and you see that
- 20:31so often like even will smith like you can
- 20:34go down the line of what i find interesting is
- 20:37those starting out in the music industry and then becoming actors i think that's
- 20:41interesting to me i don't know about you no i feel like it's the same thing
- 20:46with even like stand-up comedians you People would be surprised how many actors
- 20:52started off at least trying to do state-up comedy.
- 20:57I mean, Tom Hanks had tried to do a state-up comedy at one point.
- 21:00A lot of actors, you'd be surprised, all these dramatic actors,
- 21:06the character actors, these character actors, all have some sort of background.
- 21:10I think you almost have to have that sort of other artistic switch or whatever
- 21:15that you could kind of lean into, too, especially if you're not,
- 21:17like, the classically trained actor.
- 21:20You know, just having that little bag that you can get into,
- 21:23because, you know, Will Smith having that history of being in...
- 21:26There's a certain type of swag that comes with being in rap or,
- 21:29you know, being around hip-hop that it just shows on screen.
- 21:34Same thing with, like, Tiana Taylor.
- 21:36You could tell, like, her character was a badass, but you could tell Tiana kind
- 21:39of got, like, some hood in her from her time in hip-hop and shit like that.
- 21:44Yeah, it was really real. She deserves the award because she embodied the character.
- 21:49And I just really enjoyed seeing her on screen and to hear that she's going to be in more movies.
- 21:56I was looking her up and seeing kind of what's next for her.
- 22:00And I'm just interested to see what's next.
- 22:03And she's been quietly doing her thing. Quietly doing her thing on the movie side.
- 22:07If you go into her IMDb page, she's been doing her thing active for a cool minute.
- 22:11And so I said, yeah, like how you were saying, it's good for her to finally
- 22:14get that recognition, get those flowers that she deserves.
- 22:16And hopefully it carries over to SAG Awards and the Oscars. So we'll see about that.
- 22:21And absolutely. And you kind of make me think, too, about Paul Thomas Anderson,
- 22:25because he's been going since the 90s.
- 22:29And I remember his first film, his first feature film, Boogie Nights.
- 22:35And so going from that in the 90s, you know, he had Magnolia.
- 22:38He had all these other big names. but he
- 22:41hasn't he hasn't been really he hasn't
- 22:44really received the type of accolades until now and
- 22:48so yeah just to see his whole journey he's
- 22:51had an even longer journey i feel like and so to see him winning best director
- 22:56and best screenplay that he wrote because he writes and he directs and he produces
- 23:02and he does it all right like this guy is super talented and so to see him get to this place where.
- 23:11He's being recognized finally.
- 23:14I think that he's going to win an Oscar would be my prediction that he'll end
- 23:20up winning for this film.
- 23:23Yeah, that was something I was thinking about earlier too because Warner Brothers
- 23:26put out a lot of movies this year and then when it comes to,
- 23:30with Sinners and One Battle After Another, where I feel like One Battle After
- 23:36Another has the leg up as far as like,
- 23:39campaigning for this awards season it's kind of like Warner Brothers kind of
- 23:43went in with the expectation that like okay this is going to be the movie that,
- 23:48we used to you know solidify paul thomas and it's gonna be the movie that's gonna get him as oscars
- 23:53and all that type of stuff i think like with sinners because like
- 23:56i said going back to like it being a horror movie or if you want to talk you
- 23:58know be a predominantly black
- 23:59they didn't really know what to do with it until they saw the results of it
- 24:03and then once they saw the results up they're like okay yeah we could really
- 24:05push this for award season and stuff like that but by the time that already
- 24:09happened you know one battle after the other that was even though it hadn't
- 24:12been released yet as far as like one of the studios goes there's they already
- 24:15had in their mind they're,
- 24:17planning for this year that One Battle After Another is going to be our big,
- 24:21award season campaign movie.
- 24:24What did you think of Sinners? Did you enjoy Ryan Coogler's film?
- 24:29Did you think that they did a really good job with it?
- 24:32Yeah, I had to watch it at least, I think it's two times in theaters and.
- 24:37Streaming streaming the previous the other times but what's
- 24:41your movie go ahead no what are you saying i
- 24:45was gonna say the movie that it reminded me of was from
- 24:48dust till dawn and so
- 24:51i don't know if i could give any spoiler about
- 24:55it but because i don't want to ruin the movie for people
- 24:57if they haven't seen it but i just see a lot of parallels
- 25:00with you know those two films for me but
- 25:04i i enjoyed their take on it and I was glad to see that it won for best music
- 25:10because I felt that their music was the strongest whereas my biggest criticism
- 25:17for one battle after another was their musical score.
- 25:22I'm sorry man but I just wasn't a fan of It was so wonky out there of a movie
- 25:29that's so weird of a movie that's one battle after another I get that the score
- 25:33is kind of weird to match the vibe,
- 25:35but it was so weird that it was almost off-putty.
- 25:38Yeah, like the notes didn't sound right, you know, at times.
- 25:43Yeah. Yeah, you know what I mean? And so, not to put him down,
- 25:46not to put down the composer, but I was glad to hear that Sinner's won for that.
- 25:52Yeah, yeah. I think Sinner's is going to take that, and then,
- 25:54oh, let's go back over with Check Out, the.
- 25:59Other nominees that was for, that they was also nominated for,
- 26:04so Oh, for best, because you said Stellan Skarsgård went for best belt supporting role.
- 26:10That's right. And that was a stat cast too, man. That was, because he had two
- 26:14people for one battle after.
- 26:15They had Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn.
- 26:19Then you had Paul Best Scout for Hamnet that won the best drama.
- 26:22And then you got Jacob Lorty for Frankenstein and Adam Sandler for,
- 26:26Jay Kelly. Yeah, that's a stiff competition, especially because with the supporting
- 26:30roles, they don't separate those from musical comedy drama.
- 26:35It's just all one thing. So that's a bit cooler, I feel like,
- 26:39as far as if you win that award.
- 26:41Oh yeah, that's a big deal. It's
- 26:44way stiffer competition to win the supporting role than the lead role.
- 26:48Oh, I agree. Yeah. Cause it, it was stacked to be up against Sean Penn,
- 26:52who I felt was a standout in one battle after another.
- 26:56I felt like his character work was extremely strong and that I,
- 27:01it was so interesting to watch as an actor, you know, you studied people like that.
- 27:07So, uh, his choices, his physicality that he embodies.
- 27:11And then, yeah, just to take
- 27:14it a step further i feel like if you
- 27:17beat out people like that that that really goes to
- 27:20show that hey you you're doing a
- 27:23stellar job right because you said
- 27:26you saw sentimental value did did you do you think that his
- 27:28performance you think his performance stellan's performance was
- 27:32worthy of winning over like champion or is that
- 27:34more of a surprise to you i i thought
- 27:37it was a surprise but i do see why he
- 27:40won because his performance came across more natural
- 27:44so it didn't you didn't really see
- 27:46the acting right and that's that's what
- 27:50good acting is right that you don't see the acting
- 27:53or the choices that the actor is making and so
- 27:57i think i believe that he was this film director that had a falling out with
- 28:03his daughter is essentially what the film is about And so I believe that And
- 28:09I felt that it was well deserving I don't think that it was Something where I would say No,
- 28:15he didn't deserve it Because I've seen him in other films And I think that it's
- 28:21also his time And who knows He could potentially take down the Oscar Right?
- 28:26Like if he's won the Golden Globe Chances are he's going to get An Oscar nomination
- 28:31for this And like I said When it comes down to supporting roles.
- 28:36That's way different because the people you see nominated for the supporter
- 28:40roles could be the same people for the Oscars.
- 28:44The best actors, they got to cut down those to half. So see how that goes.
- 28:51And then one battle after another also won for best screenplay and best director.
- 28:59Like we said, no real surprise there. I felt that I don't think the other actors,
- 29:04the actors in the film outside of Tiana, I feel like they're all so accomplished
- 29:08that they don't really care about winning the award.
- 29:11I feel like they all got on board just to make this all about Paul Thomas Anderson.
- 29:16So if any more is that they do consistently win, yeah.
- 29:20Because I feel like if Leo wanted to really campaign for the best lead actor,
- 29:24he could really be doing that, but he's not really doing that.
- 29:28Say with Benicio or Sean Penn, they could really be out there doing interviews,
- 29:33whatever, maybe really campaigning for their thing, but they're just chilling.
- 29:36Well, they've already won the awards, right? All three of those actors you just
- 29:41mentioned have won Oscars.
- 29:43So all of them have had their moment. And I think that with awards.
- 29:52There's that sense of who's next, like who do we recognize next, right?
- 30:01Yeah. And it's cool because you can see When you see people that big put their
- 30:06ego to the side just to kind of help out, not to help out, but,
- 30:10you know, just say, OK, this is this is all about Paul Thomas.
- 30:12So we got his back, which is cool, which is cool. It's cool to see that in Hollywood.
- 30:18Absolutely, yeah. I thought it was nice, his speech, how he recognized Adam
- 30:24Somner, who I guess passed away.
- 30:28He mentioned that without him being the assistant director, he wasn't just an assistant director.
- 30:37He made the film possible. It sounded like he took on so much to make the film
- 30:43possible and what it was. So to hear that he's very selfless,
- 30:48you know, he's giving props to people that deserve it.
- 30:53And I appreciate that because it's not all about the individual,
- 30:57right? It's about the team. Mm-hmm.
- 31:00And then they also won Best Screenplay.
- 31:05That was interesting, too, because they was up against Marty Supreme,
- 31:08Ryan Coogler, Jafar Panahi. for It Was Just an Accident, Eskil Vaught,
- 31:14and Joe Chim Trier for Sentimental Value, and then Chloe Zhao for,
- 31:18oh, and Maggie O'Farrell for Hamnet.
- 31:20Best Screenplay, that's going to be, well, I think for the Oscars,
- 31:24though, don't they separate it from Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay?
- 31:28Yeah, they separate the two.
- 31:31Okay, yeah, I think they're going to win for, I think Paul Thomas Anderson probably
- 31:34went for Best Adapted Screenplay. Yeah. Yeah.
- 31:38Then I'm going to probably go with Sinners for Original Screenplay.
- 31:42Yeah, I agree with that. And Ryan Coogler wrote it.
- 31:45So what was interesting was he, Ryan Coogler, received the Critics' Choice Award
- 31:51for Best Writing, but he didn't get it for the Golden Globes.
- 31:56But I still think that he has an opportunity to win an Oscar.
- 32:01I'd like to see him win something for Sinners. Yeah.
- 32:06But they made up for Sinners because they gave them the award for,
- 32:10was it Cinematic and Box Office Achievement or whatever?
- 32:14Yeah. I've never seen that award until now. Have you?
- 32:18I think that was the first year they did it. That and the podcast was the first
- 32:21year that they did those awards.
- 32:22I thought that was funny because, you know, when Sinners first came out,
- 32:25they was trying to devalue. It's a compliment at the the box office.
- 32:30So to kind of give them that award is kind of the cherry on the top to all the haters.
- 32:38And then yeah I believe those are all the awards that they have won and that
- 32:41they was nominated for yeah oh best female motion picture oh yeah Chase Affinity
- 32:48Sheila but she'll be back she definitely has more awards yeah.
- 32:53The other line right you know because this
- 32:56is this was her breakout performance like this is
- 32:59just her start so the fact that she gets nominated
- 33:02is is outstanding i mean because i
- 33:06don't recall her being in anything else i
- 33:08believe she she was in a series before but
- 33:12outside of that she wasn't really in anything major
- 33:15like this was her first big movie role as
- 33:18i recall yeah so if
- 33:22you start off being nominated for all these awards you're at
- 33:24least going somewhere yeah you're destined for greatness
- 33:28for sure yeah but i'm definitely i'm gonna have to check
- 33:30out that rose burn movie if i
- 33:33had legs i'd kick you and then oh and then
- 33:36amanda cyphrey she wasn't nominated for the testament
- 33:39of ann lee actually i got to go see um uh for
- 33:43your consideration screening of the testament of ann lee
- 33:46i think last thursday and then the director
- 33:49it was pretty i didn't i had no idea what the movie
- 33:51was you know but i was just out there just doing the networking thing that
- 33:55you know we're supposed to do as actors and um oh absolutely so so i had no
- 33:59idea what the movie was about it was a long ass movie i don't lie it was good
- 34:02but i fell asleep a couple times but that's only because i drove a long way
- 34:05out as well because i drove a long way out it wasn't it wasn't like a it wasn't
- 34:08a bad movie i just had drove a long way out so i wish i had been more
- 34:13more awake to really grasp the movie but it was it was pretty good it was pretty
- 34:18good i mean if you're into like.
- 34:20Because I believe she's like a...
- 34:23A shaker was that religion or
- 34:26whatever like that she has shaker but yeah you got to watch the movie i'm not going
- 34:29to dive into it i'm not going to dive into it this is all about one battle after another for
- 34:32sure but yeah but if you get a chance to yeah check it
- 34:35out and then yeah those are all the movies that it was nominated
- 34:38for and the movies that it won we could
- 34:42kind of compare it to to the critics choice because those
- 34:45are you know the movie critics that get to vote on it and
- 34:48stuff like that you they won three awards right yeah they
- 34:51won three awards and they had more nominations so they
- 34:54had 14 nominations whereas you know in
- 34:57the golden globes they only had nine but i still
- 35:00think it's important to note that that that even
- 35:03with the more nominations they still
- 35:06won three awards you know
- 35:09and then compare that to less nominations
- 35:13and and winning more awards it obviously did
- 35:16better at the golden globe globes it did better yeah
- 35:19there so that i think is a good indication that
- 35:23it's going to do even better at the oscars yeah yeah because we have as far
- 35:28as the movie awards go we have oh we have the actors they changed the name of
- 35:32the sag after awards the actors awards so they have the actors awards and then
- 35:37after that it's the uh the oscars i believe.
- 35:42So, yeah, from the Critics' Choice, the Golden Globes, the SAG,
- 35:47well, not necessarily SAG Awards, because the nominees will already be announced
- 35:51by the time we have the SAG, the Actors' Awards, but the final voting won't be in.
- 35:56So the final voting from those movies will, from those awards will all dictate
- 36:00how one battle after another performs.
- 36:04And what was the awards that it won at the Critics' Choice? yeah so
- 36:08it was nominated for 14 it won for
- 36:12best director paul thomas anderson
- 36:15it won for best picture and then
- 36:18it also won for best screenplay paul thomas
- 36:21anderson so it was just paul thomas anderson and
- 36:25then pretty much everybody else only got nominated for
- 36:28their acting and so that was
- 36:31the only three awards that it won for critics choice
- 36:34out of the 14 nominations so
- 36:37i hope they weren't disappointed with that
- 36:41result only winning three out of
- 36:4414 nominations yeah i mean you could
- 36:47take that in a negative view that that's not
- 36:49good but from my perspective it's like well it did
- 36:52win for best picture though so yeah
- 36:55and one though and one the for what it for what one
- 36:59battle after or another was supposed to be as far as like award season goes
- 37:02everybody knows it's all about paul thomas anderson so him
- 37:06went like any awards that it wins for like best director best
- 37:08screenplay it's not really going to be a surprise i think where
- 37:11it gets iffy is where it comes down to like the best picture that's about it
- 37:16but i think any any any award that you know paul thomas anderson is nominated
- 37:21for is probably going to win which is which is interesting you'll see we'll
- 37:24see how that plays out with the actors awards because the director's not nominated.
- 37:30Usually it's just like best ensemble or something like that. So.
- 37:35We'll see how many awards it wins with that.
- 37:39Because, yeah, there's no Paul Thomas Anderson or anything like that.
- 37:41It's just strictly about the actors.
- 37:43So that'll be interesting to see how that awards, how one battle after another
- 37:48plays out with that awards show.
- 37:50Because I know, I think they just had the directors, something for the directors
- 37:54or whatever, but that's neither here or there. But, yeah, no, yeah.
- 37:59Anything director-related, screenwriter-related, anything connected directly
- 38:02to the Paul Thomas Anderson, I think he's got that in the bag.
- 38:04Anything else would be a surprise.
- 38:05I would really, which is why I was really happy to see Sianna Taylor win.
- 38:09Oh, yeah. That was what was so shocking for me because I didn't,
- 38:13and even I heard her say it herself that she was shocked, right?
- 38:17She just prepared a speech in time, it sounded like.
- 38:21So I think that's awesome that she won, to be honest. And I think that's only
- 38:26going to help her further.
- 38:28Yeah. Yeah, definitely. I said, because you see, she's been putting it in the
- 38:31work. So it's definitely good to see her getting her just dues.
- 38:37Then let me see. Was there anything else we had going on with one battle after
- 38:41another for this holiday season? I mean, for this awards season?
- 38:45You know what I wish they would do? Is this like, but like, cause they're doing
- 38:49a lot of, um, like I said, like the, like for like the movie campaigning for
- 38:53like the awards or whatever.
- 38:54They, you know, they produce directors or stars in movies.
- 38:58They'll pop up in different locations around the U S to show the movie,
- 39:01you know, talk about the movie, do Q and A's.
- 39:04I really hope they do something up here in Sacramento for that.
- 39:07Especially if it gets closer to like the Oscars or something like that,
- 39:09that they do like, um, a screening up here.
- 39:12And like Paul Thomas, they'd have like Paul Thomas Anderson up here,
- 39:14or maybe like Leo, just to talk about what it was like to make this movie up here in Sacramento.
- 39:19Yeah, the only screenings that I've been to here locally, they'll have it where
- 39:25it just comes out just right before I went to one here locally and saw it before it came out.
- 39:33You're cordially invited. It was with Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon.
- 39:38So I got to attend that for free. And then you basically speak to somebody after
- 39:45you watch the movie and they ask you what you thought of it so that they kind
- 39:50of get an idea of what the audience is thinking about it.
- 39:57Yeah, so I think those are fun. But outside of that, I haven't really experienced
- 40:03something bigger like I have in L.A.
- 40:07Where it's a bigger – if you're in L.A., you've got a chance to maybe experience more, certainly.
- 40:18But but that's not a knock on Sacramento or
- 40:21anything because I think it's just
- 40:24a smaller market but but yeah and I
- 40:27was looking you know on IMDB buddy and I was I saw that like it's been one battle
- 40:36after another has been nominated 389 times and it's won 168 times excuse me 186 wins.
- 40:48So 186 that's almost like 50 huh yeah and
- 40:52so that's good you can't be mad at that yeah and
- 40:56so i was going through and it's like nationwide so it's
- 40:59you know with having a film of your own you wonder do they have to pay the festival
- 41:06submission fees or do they just get in i wonder i think that i think that they
- 41:13have to to some degree i think that would be applied to the budget, you know?
- 41:17Like, let's say they wanted the film to close out Sundance or something like that.
- 41:21I'm pretty sure that they have to, that's all, that goes into part of the budget of,
- 41:26Because I think, let's break it down from, like, even, like,
- 41:28with you doing Scar and then me doing, like, putting almost 30 out to the film
- 41:31festivals, you know? Right.
- 41:33I would imagine they'd have to pay some sort of stipend to get their films shot at the theater.
- 41:39But it's nothing to them. Yeah. But it would be nothing to them. They're like, okay.
- 41:44Yeah, because they're going to pay the same rate, aren't they, as we would? No.
- 41:48I think they—no, not for us, because we're not doing—they're not putting it
- 41:51in a short film, you know?
- 41:52They're putting it like a they probably got to pay a good amount of money a good amount of money,
- 41:58i could i could imagine that um i think it'd be yeah i think it'd be but who
- 42:02knows we got to get to that level to find out yeah it'll be interesting to see
- 42:06but i think you're right i think it's got to be a little bit more wouldn't you
- 42:10think i would imagine so because you're dealing because like for business wise it's like.
- 42:15It's like, it's, it's part of like the promotion and marketing of the film.
- 42:18So I'm pretty sure that's part of that.
- 42:20Even if they do have to put something up for it, that's all like pre-planned.
- 42:25It part of like, it part of the budget.
- 42:27So they already know like going in like, okay, we're going to aim for this film.
- 42:31That's where at least put the money aside for it. I'm not sure.
- 42:33We'll figure it out. And they must've spent, they must've spent a ton of money
- 42:37on marketing this film because I remember so many ads on one battle after another.
- 42:43They put it on your phone. They put it on the TV. They put it everywhere now.
- 42:48So I don't think you could have avoided knowing about this movie unless you're
- 42:54completely not on social media, not, you know, watching TV or anything like that.
- 43:00That would be the only way. But even then, I feel like it was in the newspapers here locally.
- 43:05It talked about how they were in town, you know.
- 43:09Shopping for props and wardrobe and going to like Goodwills and going to different
- 43:16stores and things locally around the area to find certain things.
- 43:21So there was a lot of buzz about it in the area. And people knew that it was
- 43:25here and people knew that it was starring Leo, that we just didn't know what it was called.
- 43:31Didn't know what it was about nothing like that what was it called like
- 43:34highway something it was referred to as the bc
- 43:37project at but you're right it was highway
- 43:40something at 1.2 and how i got how i got my extra spot was off casting network
- 43:48so i had applied there and then i actually had to talk to the uh casting director
- 43:55too so i had to actually have a phone call.
- 43:59And, and, and so that was interesting, you know, to have that chat.
- 44:04It was a pretty quick conversation though.
- 44:07Yeah, they probably want to just test because like I said, filming up here,
- 44:11they have like their certain standards of what professionalism is.
- 44:14So that probably was just a quick
- 44:15phone call just to check your level of professionalism. So you passed.
- 44:19But yeah, that's, that's interesting. That's interesting.
- 44:22For sure yeah and the whole process was
- 44:25because it was pouring down rain when i was
- 44:28there it was like flooding and i remember having
- 44:31to leave my apartment and there was two feet of water so i had to put on some
- 44:36cowboy boots and trudge through this water just to get to my car and then there
- 44:41was a tree that fell down right near my car so i was lucky to get out of there
- 44:46like just to get out and get on the highway and get there safely.
- 44:53We're going to get ready to wrap up this episode. We'll be back,
- 44:59I think, what's the next big thing? Oh, I think they're doing the awards,
- 45:02the nominations for the Oscars coming up.
- 45:06So we'll either be back for the Oscars or talking about the set, the Actors Awards.
- 45:10Yeah, either the Oscar nominations or the Actors Awards. We'll be back for,
- 45:14well, for both of those. I just don't know which episode's coming first.
- 45:17So yeah, we'll see you then. But besides that, other than one battle after another,
- 45:21was there anything else that you wanted that people know that you got going on?
- 45:24No, I just appreciate you having me on your podcast, buddy. It's always a good
- 45:28time. and look forward to next time.
- 45:31No, yeah, I appreciate you being the special co-host during this.
- 45:34I'm going to call this series One Buddy After Another.
- 45:37Instead of one battle after another, we're just going to call this One Buddy
- 45:39After Another. Oh, that's perfect, buddy.
- 45:44Yeah. So, yeah, no, so, yeah, thanks for tuning in.
- 45:47Brandon's going to be here throughout the whole awards season,
- 45:50chopping it up, and we're going to be giving you all the spill.
- 45:52It's weird, because I don't know why nobody from Sacramento even thought about
- 45:55talking about the movie shit.
