- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. Last week I was standing in the
- 0:33kitchen when suddenly my hands started to vibrate.
- 0:36Now they weren't shaking like tremors, they were vibrating on
- 0:39the inside. And here's the wild part.
- 0:41Nobody could see it. I looked completely fine.
- 0:44And that's the problem with so many Parkinson's side effects.
- 0:47They're invisible. They're unexpected.
- 0:50And yeah, they're not in the brochure.
- 0:52So today we're going to dive into Part 2 of the side effects
- 0:54doctors will not warn you about. And some of these, honestly,
- 0:58they're worse than tremors. Welcome to Living with
- 1:02Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad, and the Reality.
- 1:06Real talk, real life, real community with Bryce Perry.
- 1:11Let's begin. Hey, friends, welcome back.
- 1:15If you saw Part 1, then you already know how real this is
- 1:19going to get. You know, thousands of you
- 1:20dropped comments, you shared your stories and you said things
- 1:23like, thank you. I thought I was the only one.
- 1:26And if this is your first time here, I'm Bryce.
- 1:28And this is living with Parkinson's.
- 1:30The good, the bad and the reality.
- 1:32Now, I've been living with Parkinson's for over 15 years
- 1:36and I'm not here to sugarcoat anything.
- 1:38This channel is about real life, real community and real support.
- 1:41So stick around to the very end to unlock today's Bryces and one
- 1:44of my signature one liners that's real, raw or ridiculous.
- 1:48So go ahead, hit that subscribe button, join the movement.
- 1:51Let's talk about what really happens with life when you live
- 1:54with Parkinson's. Oh, and you know what?
- 1:56Stick around, because I've got a story coming up about nearly
- 1:58blacking out in the pharmacy aisle and scaring a poor guy who
- 2:03was stocking toilet paper, and you really don't want to miss
- 2:05that one. So let's kick things off though,
- 2:08with the one that inspired today's video, the internal
- 2:11tremors. So it's like your insides are
- 2:14shaking, right? But nothing shows on the
- 2:16outside. It's unnerving, it's
- 2:18disorienting, and it makes you feel like you're imagining it.
- 2:22I've had days where I felt like I had an electric toothbrush
- 2:25buzzing inside my chest, but to everyone else, I look totally
- 2:28calm. It's like living in a haunted
- 2:30house where the only person who knows it's haunted is you.
- 2:33So if you've ever felt that invisible vibrating, then give
- 2:38this video a thumbs up or comment right in the comments
- 2:40right now. Me.
- 2:41That way I won't feel less alone and hopefully you don't either
- 2:44'cause you know it's not just you.
- 2:46Let's let people know that it's real.
- 2:47A lot of people just don't even believe it's real if they can't
- 2:49see it, it's not happening. That's what we're going to do
- 2:52here. Comment me.
- 2:54Let's go now here's one that I have so much fun with and this
- 2:59is another symptom that they didn't tell me about was brain
- 3:02fog, or as I like to call it, that moment when you forget the
- 3:05word for toaster and you call it the TV bread cooker, right.
- 3:10I've had conversations where I'm mid sentence and the word is
- 3:12just gone. I've had podcasts and videos
- 3:16where you know the word is gone. Opinions, right?
- 3:19Here we go again. How many times?
- 3:20I know people think that's hilarious, but again, it was one
- 3:23of those things that just disappeared.
- 3:25It's like someone yanked the cable right out of my brain.
- 3:27It's not dementia, but it's very frustrating.
- 3:30I once forgot how to say appointment during my my
- 3:33neurologist appointment, right. And yes, this symptom has made
- 3:36me miss messages, appointments, and even speaking geeks because
- 3:39I've scrambled the dates and the times.
- 3:42How about this, once you drop a comment, what's the weirdest
- 3:44word that you blanked out on? Or do you blank out on words?
- 3:47Make sure you know, sometimes I feel like I'm all alone.
- 3:50Anyway, let me know in the comments is is you know, if it's
- 3:52happens to you, let me know what happens to you.
- 3:55And if it doesn't happen to you or if it does happen to you, let
- 3:57me know what word you blanked out on because I want to see if
- 4:00there's a consistent thing. If it's the same word every
- 4:02time, I don't know. All right, let's move on to
- 4:04another thing that the another symptom that they did not tell
- 4:07me about when I got diagnosed, it was the drops in blood
- 4:10pressure right? Let's talk about that
- 4:12orthostatic hypertension, AKA the I just stood up too fast and
- 4:16now the floor is spinning feeling.
- 4:18I once stood up from a pharmacy blood pressure chair.
- 4:21I turned to say thank to thank the staff and the entire room
- 4:24did like a barrel roll. I grabbed the nearest thing for
- 4:27balance, which happened to be guess what, No, you won't guess
- 4:30it. OK, here it is, a cart full of
- 4:33adult diapers. The poor guy stalking the toilet
- 4:36paper nearly had a heart attack. And now I stand up very slowly.
- 4:42That ever happened to you? And if it has happened to you,
- 4:43they'll let you know. You're not alone.
- 4:45And you probably haven't done it as brilliantly or as graceful as
- 4:48I have. But you're not alone.
- 4:50It happens. And it's not just getting older.
- 4:53It's Parkinson's. It really is now something I've
- 4:57been dealing with a lot lately. And, and again, this is, you
- 4:59know, where I've been kind of pushing into looking deeper into
- 5:03what's going on here. But how about this, another
- 5:06symptom that they did not tell me about and they didn't tell
- 5:09you about or maybe didn't tell you about is your internal
- 5:11thermostat, right? My, my internal thermostat is
- 5:14broken. Some days I'm freezing in a
- 5:17hoodie. Other days I'm sweating through
- 5:18my shirt in air conditioning and I don't even get my, don't even
- 5:22get me started when I go public speaking.
- 5:24It's crazy. I've sweat through more dress
- 5:26shirts than I care to admit. And this isn't just nerves,
- 5:29right? It's that anatomic dysfunction,
- 5:32Parkinson's, hijacks the part of your brain that controls body
- 5:35temperature and says, let let's mess with them today.
- 5:40Ever sweat for no reason? Or have you ever froze when
- 5:43there's no one else's? I don't know.
- 5:46My wife Carmen, she says I have like this perfect internal
- 5:49temperature and she said or perfect temperature that I need
- 5:52the house to be set at, it's not 19 or 20 or 21 if you're in
- 5:56Celsius or I don't know, 787980 in Fahrenheit, she says it's
- 5:59like 79.2 or 70.3, right? Or in Fahrenheit it's 19.6.
- 6:07And she said anything over and I'm freezing anything under and
- 6:10I'm hot. Did I just do that backwards?
- 6:14I really did, I think. Anyway, you catch my drift.
- 6:18And if that's you right, here's all I want you to put in the
- 6:21comments. Hot flash hero or frozen solid.
- 6:24Let me know. Let me know if that's you.
- 6:26Now here is one that I really want to talk about because it's
- 6:31not talked about often. And we've gotten so many
- 6:33comments and there were so many comments from the episode 1.
- 6:37And that's Constipation. And Yep, we're going to go
- 6:40there. Let's talk about Constipation.
- 6:43You know, when Parkinson's with Parkinson's does not just eat
- 6:46more fiber, OK, It's, it's my meds aren't working because
- 6:50nothing's moving. You know, one time I went like 4
- 6:53full days a day, five. I was Googling, can a person
- 6:57explode from not pooping? Right?
- 7:00It's not just uncomfortable, it throws off your meds, your mood,
- 7:04your everything. It's very frustrating.
- 7:08It's extremely nerve wracking. It can be humiliating.
- 7:13And if that's you and you're dealing with that, let me know.
- 7:16Is this something they told you in the very beginning or did you
- 7:18have to learn this along the way?
- 7:20Or are you just learning it now? Because it's something that we
- 7:23may dive into. Actually, I probably I'm going
- 7:25to dive deeper into in later, but let me know drop your drop
- 7:28your safest Constipation hacks in the comments because somebody
- 7:31is going to thank you. There's, you know, everybody
- 7:34needs 1 and I don't know them all, but it is something that so
- 7:38many people deal with and it's it's such a like this hidden
- 7:40embarrassing symptom that we don't want to talk about.
- 7:44And I think we're going to have a whole episode just about, you
- 7:47know, pooping. But anyway, let me know in the
- 7:51comments. Let me know if that's you.
- 7:52Let me know if it's something to deal with and let me know if you
- 7:55think it's a good idea to do a whole episode of that.
- 7:58OK, here's the sixth, another one, the 6th one that they don't
- 8:02tell the symptom they don't tell you about.
- 8:04And this one is for the over prepared.
- 8:07OK. I plan my outings based on
- 8:10bathroom access. I've memorized every clean
- 8:13restroom in the city because when I got to go, I have got to
- 8:17go. No warning, no grace period.
- 8:20And yes, I've had accidents and more than once.
- 8:24Is it humiliating? It is very humiliating, but
- 8:28you're not gross and you're not alone.
- 8:30You've just got someone navigating Parkinson's with
- 8:33courage. So fill up that cup, man.
- 8:37Fill up that cup. And one that I've touched on,
- 8:41but I touched on it in, in chapter 1, chapter one in the
- 8:45first, in the first video. And, and, and this one I, you
- 8:48know, I'm dealing a lot with and I'm feeling a lot of people are,
- 8:51are really messaged hard on this one.
- 8:52And I really want to touch on it again, but it's, it's, I want to
- 8:55go a bit deeper on it. So it's this one.
- 8:58My face doesn't always show what I'm feeling.
- 9:01My voice is quieter. My smile doesn't always show up.
- 9:05People are always sitting and asking, are you mad?
- 9:08Are you bored? Are you tired?
- 9:11And you know what? Yeah, sometimes I'm tired,
- 9:15sometimes I'm mad, and sometimes I am bored.
- 9:18But sometimes I'm having the best moment of my day and nobody
- 9:22can tell. That disconnect, it wears on
- 9:26you. Have you been there?
- 9:30And if you're there, you're feeling that here's the truth.
- 9:33You don't know anyone. A performance.
- 9:35You're still you even if your face isn't playing along.
- 9:41So what helps? Well, one of the main things
- 9:45that helps is staying on, right? Staying on your on time instead
- 9:48of your off time. And you know me, I'm tell you
- 9:50again, because repetition is learning.
- 9:53What do you you know, how do you help?
- 9:54Stay on, Journal it, track your trends.
- 9:57I track my meds, my food, my sleep.
- 10:00I use my pill bottle, pill, pill cap timer religiously.
- 10:07And you know, some of the other things that I do, I carry around
- 10:10sugar because sometimes nausea hits out of control out of
- 10:13nowhere. So I got my peanut M&M says, you
- 10:16know, but my most powerful tool on how I deal with all of this
- 10:19stuff, because it's embarrassing, I'm learning as I
- 10:22go, is my community. It's talking with you, talking
- 10:26with others, reading through the comments and sharing openly in
- 10:31the inner circle. And it reminds me that I'm not
- 10:34alone and neither are you. And if you're feeling that
- 10:38embarrassment or that sting or that frustration or that anger
- 10:42over these symptoms that no one told you about or symptoms that
- 10:45you're dealing with, you just can't find a way out.
- 10:48You need community and you need a, you need a bat.
- 10:50There is support groups probably all around the world and there's
- 10:53support groups around you. I know there is, or there's
- 10:55places to plug into, right? And you need to do that.
- 11:00OK, so let's keep this going. Tell me in the comments, what's
- 11:03your hidden symptom that nobody warned you about?
- 11:07Just drop it in there and vote for the ones that you want me to
- 11:09cover in Part 3. So if you see a good one in
- 11:11there and you agree with it, give me, you know, vote for it.
- 11:14And I, I don't know, I'm going to put together in part three,
- 11:17you know, we're starting a symptom of the week soon.
- 11:19So let me know what you want me to dive deep on next.
- 11:22Is that Constipation? Should we go deeper on that?
- 11:24Should we go deeper on the mask? You tell me.
- 11:26And if this video helped you or made you laugh or or made you
- 11:29feel seen, give it a like. And if you know somebody feeling
- 11:33alone with Parkinson's, send this video to them.
- 11:36Please do that. And if you want to go a little
- 11:38bit deeper, you want to talk a bit more about in depth about
- 11:41this, You don't want to put it in the comments in public, but
- 11:45then join in the circle. It's a private group, monthly
- 11:47live talks, real talk. The links in the description.
- 11:50No pressure is totally up to you.
- 11:52And if you made it this far, then you've unlocked the Bryce
- 11:56system of the episode. And here's your Bryceism with
- 11:59Parkinson's. Your symptoms don't knock.
- 12:01They barge in, uninvited and pantless.
- 12:05You're not alone in this. We're figuring out.
- 12:07We're figuring out together, one day, one video and one story at
- 12:11a time. And until next time, you keep
- 12:13doing life and you keep. Parkinson's may be part of your
- 12:18life, but it doesn't get to define it.
- 12:21Thanks for listening to Living with Parkinson's, the good, the
- 12:24bad, and the Reality. If this episode moved you,
- 12:28helped you, or reminded you you're not alone, share it with
- 12:31someone who needs to hear it. Want to go deeper?
- 12:35The Inner Circle is waiting monthly Zoom calls, 24/7
- 12:38community, and a Direct Line to Bryce.
- 12:41You'll find the link in the show notes.
- 12:43Until next time, keep showing up and keep doing life today.
