- 0:22SPEAKER_00: One of the basic motifs of superhero stories is the importance of a double life.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: When the hero puts on their costume, they're a courageous individual who rushes into the battle to save lives.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: But in order to conceal their true identity, they adopt a mild-mannered persona that's the total opposite of their superhero personality.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: For example, Batman is secretly Bruce Wayne, an aloof billionaire playboy.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Susan Storm of the Fantastic Four is secretly a scientist.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Spider-Man is secretly Peter Parker, a nerdy newspaper reporter.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Superman is secretly Clark Kent, yet another nerdy newspaper reporter.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: And Wonder Woman is secretly Diana Prince, an ambassador to the United Nations.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: But you know, superheroes aren't the only ones who can live a double life.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: We writers can develop an alter ego as well if we're not careful.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: It's easy to appear bold and brave on the page, but how do you handle the challenges of real life?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Let me ask you a few tough questions.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Are you dealing with your personal problems head on, or are you avoiding them?
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Do you engage in conversations about hard things, or do you shut down when you're confronted by a truth that you don't want to hear?
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Would the people who know you best describe you as brave, focused, determined, disciplined?
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Or would they be more likely to say that you're aloof, timid, or uncaring?
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Let's be honest, it's hard to face your real life problems instead of running away from them, and it's easy to turn to substance abuse or other unhealthy patterns as you try to escape from reality.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Henry David Thoreau once said how vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Just because you're a writer, you don't have the license to check out of real life.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: You've got to show up on the stage of life where the real action is happening day in and day out.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Nobody is perfect, of course, but your writing should reflect the person that you're trying to become.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Bold, brave, and above all, a true life superhero to the people you love the most.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Think about the past 24 hours.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: What did you do that was brave, bold, or fearless?
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I'll see you next time.
