Latest / Film Curious / The Drama Review - A24's New Dark Comedy’s Wild Twist & Who Really Is the Worst Character Here?
Transcript
- 0:00Mind of mush, burying trauma, Alana’s a horrible person,
- 0:04she's the most same one.
- 0:20Hello all you film lovers,
- 0:21casual theater goers, at home movie watchers and streaming
- 0:25scrollers out there.
- 0:26You're listening to Film Curious, the podcast that invites you
- 0:29to let your intrigue guide you and explore great films across genres and time.
- 0:34At least, that's what I'll be doing.
- 0:35I'm Ashley Bernhardt, and this episode I'm joined again by my good friend
- 0:39Pete Tedone to dive into a new theatrical release from A24.
- 0:43The Drama.
- 0:44And this is kind of part two of our conversation.
- 0:46It's not necessary before listening to this episode
- 0:49to listen to the previous one,
- 0:50but if you hear us mention Project Hail Mary in this episode, it's
- 0:53because we recorded one right after another.
- 0:56That's why two films on
- 0:57totally opposite ends of the spectrum come up in both episodes.
- 1:01The Drama is written and directed by Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli.
- 1:05You may have caught one of his more recent previous works, Dream Scenario,
- 1:09a quirky, surreal story starring Nicolas Cage
- 1:12and similarly in his latest work, the concept itself may be less surreal,
- 1:17but the heightened emotions certainly drive plot points
- 1:21and set the stage for a deeper cultural discussion.
- 1:23The film stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, a happily engaged couple
- 1:28who is put to the test
- 1:29when an unanticipated turn sends their wedding off the rails.
- 1:33Before getting into our deep dive, I do want to acknowledge
- 1:35the inciting plot point does open the door for a heavy topic.
- 1:39We try to handle it mainly in the context of the story,
- 1:42but with this sort of topic, it's impossible
- 1:44not to talk about personal feelings the plot brings up and how it relates
- 1:47to the real world, which I would argue is one of the points of this film.
- 1:51All this to say, this is a spoiler discussion as it wouldn't do
- 1:54the film or subject matter justice if we weren't to get into the details.
- 1:58So join us as we indulge in the drama
- 2:02so the drama, the conversation that it leads to, that you can
- 2:07I mean, we'll see how long we can talk about the drama,
- 2:10but I think it is something that we could go on for a while about.
- 2:14I think it does a good job of posing questions
- 2:17about, humans and how good we really are.
- 2:22Depending on.
- 2:24Is it the actions we take?
- 2:25Is it the thoughts we have?
- 2:27How far, you know?
- 2:29Do you have to go before then? You're not good.
- 2:34This is again, this is like a very hard movie
- 2:36to have a conversation about without getting into the spoiler of it.
- 2:39Yeah, yeah, you have to just because. Yeah.
- 2:43So it's just a full spoiler
- 2:45warning on this one, and it comes up relatively early in the film, too.
- 2:49Like you can. Yeah. Kind of.
- 2:51It's the. Marketing has made this a spoiler.
- 2:54The film doesn't. Right.
- 2:56You know the beginning.
- 2:57It's it's the inciting incident for the rest of the show.
- 3:00But yeah, the.
- 3:03And I think that's actually.
- 3:05Where a lot of I've heard a lot of people feel like, well,
- 3:07I was sort of, you know, deceived into this corner and sucker punched.
- 3:12I get it.
- 3:14If you were going for the funny rom
- 3:15com movie, you did not get that or that.
- 3:19Well, actually, I argue that you did.
- 3:21I think it is darkly comedic.
- 3:25In a. Lot of scenes.
- 3:28I'll be honest, I was laughing.
- 3:31Yeah, there was the question of time.
- 3:33Was there?
- 3:34It was from like, the absurdity of,
- 3:37you know, Pattinson's Charlie's visions of.
- 3:42Zendaya or, the character.
- 3:45That she plays of, of her, imaginations of
- 3:49of putting on this, this mass shooting.
- 3:53Yeah, I guess let's let's.
- 3:54Set it up right. Like, just in. Case.
- 3:56Someone is unaware. In the film.
- 3:59We have, you know, Charlie and Emma who is, you know, patents and and Zendaya,
- 4:04and they are getting ready for their wedding and one of the,
- 4:07you know, first, like 15 minutes or so I would say they're doing a wine tasting,
- 4:11you know, getting ready for the wedding with their bride of honor.
- 4:14Sorry, maid of honor and best man.
- 4:18And they get into a thing of telling each other
- 4:21stories of or a story of the worst thing they ever did.
- 4:24Which I want to say.
- 4:27And I think this is very important.
- 4:28And these are the little.
- 4:29Details
- 4:30that, like, everyone is fixating on this, the bigger thing, which I get why,
- 4:33but it's. It's a
- 4:36the. Delivery
- 4:37system of it that I think a lot of people are missing.
- 4:40Or just.
- 4:40Overlooking because of the larger, issue that comes up a lot of times.
- 4:46Character of Rachel, that's the maid of honor.
- 4:49She, outwardly, without.
- 4:52Any prompting.
- 4:55Shares her husband's worst thing that he ever did, that
- 4:59he told to her in secret.
- 5:01Like a year or two years ago.
- 5:04And she just blurts it out. It essentially.
- 5:06Blows up.
- 5:07It just like, says it like, or says enough that he then has to.
- 5:10Explain because.
- 5:12She says this.
- 5:12And you imagine. It the worse, right?
- 5:15You imagine imagines much worse. Yeah.
- 5:16So that then kicks.
- 5:18Off everyone sharing their their story and just to to
- 5:22just to recap what the stories were.
- 5:24Mike the the best
- 5:27man, best friend of patents is Charlie.
- 5:30He and his girlfriend, who he didn't,
- 5:33wasn't not getting along with at the time, were walking home.
- 5:37A stray dog came and sort of attacked them, and he used her as a human shield.
- 5:46Then the, you know, his wife,
- 5:48the maid of honor, Rachel Lanham, tells her story.
- 5:52And her story is that she took, in her words, a slow kid.
- 5:57And in the in the woods, put him in a closet.
- 6:01Locked him and left him there running away because he started screaming.
- 6:06So she was she panicked, and she ran away and doesn't tell anybody.
- 6:10Even when people ask her where this kid is and they don't find him
- 6:14till, like, the next morning.
- 6:16The next morning in this trailer.
- 6:17Yeah, that's locked. In a. Closet.
- 6:19He's not even all day.
- 6:20I'm assuming he probably, you know, lost bodily function at some point.
- 6:25Right. And that was that was hers.
- 6:26Pattinson's was I cyberbullied.
- 6:29Somebody. And they moved.
- 6:32But in the way that he says it, they said, sounds like they just moved.
- 6:36And it was at the same time when this happened.
- 6:39And he was like, I actually don't know if it was because of.
- 6:41Me, because. Of me.
- 6:42But but again, we have the.
- 6:44Details of his bullying are pretty vague.
- 6:47They're very vague.
- 6:48We don't we don't.
- 6:49Much at all saying, yeah, that I'll say I think it's because he really.
- 6:55Didn't have anything to. Say.
- 6:56During the scene. You can.
- 6:57See that Emma Zendaya is very hesitant for her turn in this roundtable.
- 7:04And her reveal is.
- 7:07I planned a school shooting.
- 7:09It didn't go with it, but I had planned it.
- 7:11And then she is grilled by pretty much everyone at the table,
- 7:15specifically Alana Harms, Rachel
- 7:18well, like, what do you mean?
- 7:19Like how, you know?
- 7:20And she took it as far as had a gun, had a plan and then didn't do it.
- 7:26And we find out why she didn't do it later.
- 7:29And, every one of the.
- 7:31Patents and.
- 7:32He at first like he's shocked, but he isn't like, are you insane?
- 7:37Do you love him like that?
- 7:38Whereas, Rachel and Mike, they don't.
- 7:42Mike is a is.
- 7:43Sort of like he's reacting to it.
- 7:45Heavily, but a lot of James.
- 7:46Characters really like
- 7:49perked up on this one. Yeah.
- 7:51And and she shares that, you know, she had a cousin
- 7:53who was paralyzed from a school shooting and everything.
- 7:59And then.
- 7:59Okay, so and then that's where the film.
- 8:01Goes, like, it's about these people, specifically Claire,
- 8:05Charlie and Emma and
- 8:09trying to get married within, you know,
- 8:12six days later, five days later.
- 8:14And how do you deal with learning that the person that you're about to marry
- 8:18when they were 14.
- 8:1915, was
- 8:23moments away or, you know, a half.
- 8:25A day away from, from committing this. Act,
- 8:29which is, again, the film is, is giving.
- 8:32You other information that you're supposed to carry with it because.
- 8:36When patents and tells his.
- 8:38Cyberbullying story.
- 8:41It gets washed over.
- 8:43By, well. When you're 14, your.
- 8:45Brain is mush.
- 8:46You don't have an adult brain till you're like 25.
- 8:51But at 15.
- 8:53Everyone is expecting Emma's character
- 8:56to be cognizant and understanding of everything.
- 9:00And you know, that suddenly doesn't have a brain.
- 9:03Is mush.
- 9:03Only one year older than Pattinson's character.
- 9:08And that's and that's where the film goes.
- 9:10Essentially, everyone loses their fucking mind.
- 9:14Really, everyone.
- 9:15Within within earshot of.
- 9:18This loses their fucking. Mind.
- 9:19Except me. Anybody.
- 9:21It touches me right?
- 9:22Yeah.
- 9:22Mike is the only one who I feel like he's like, you know what?
- 9:25It's fucked up the best man. Yeah, but.
- 9:29Okay, you know, I get it.
- 9:31It's fucked up.
- 9:34You know, I maybe I wouldn't
- 9:35marry this person, but he doesn't seem like.
- 9:39This is the worst
- 9:41human being I've ever met.
- 9:42Like he's the only one who kind of seems to take it in and sort of understand it.
- 9:47And I think it has to do a lot with.
- 9:49He comes from a background that he probably way more understands
- 9:53than the two other white people who are in this conversation about,
- 9:57you know, getting through high school and everything that that can entail.
- 10:00And the bullying and the the singling out and everything like that.
- 10:04What was your take on this? I had a lot of
- 10:09empathy for Emma's character.
- 10:11Right. Like, I'm not.
- 10:13Saying it's a good thing that she plotted out this, that she.
- 10:16Had these thoughts, but I think I having witnessed
- 10:19I haven't that I was never, badly bullied in high school,
- 10:23but having witnessed some people that were badly bullied
- 10:27and trying to kind of like, hey, cut that out, that's
- 10:29not a cool thing to do to this person.
- 10:31I always had in the back of my mind of like,
- 10:34this is how school shooters are born.
- 10:36Kind of sort of like not being included,
- 10:39being relentlessly bullied and harassed every day.
- 10:42So yeah, like my my point on this is like,
- 10:46yeah, she she's been through a dark time.
- 10:48Maybe she had a really dark time.
- 10:50And honestly, then she turns to anti-gun activism.
- 10:55So like.
- 10:57Now. She could be like, I feel so guilty.
- 11:00Or I'm trying to show that I don't have these thoughts still or something.
- 11:04I feel like.
- 11:05I think. That, but I also think that she found a way that she could
- 11:10make friends.
- 11:12Yeah, well, I mean, that was just the opportunity.
- 11:15Yeah, the opportunity presents itself.
- 11:18So again, like you have to give.
- 11:20Like, can't I guess like we have to give more context.
- 11:22Right.
- 11:23So patents and questions like well what what happened that you didn't like.
- 11:27What you know, what was it that made you decide not to.
- 11:31And she kind of didn't decide not to.
- 11:33You know, she does ultimately because she could have still made the choice and.
- 11:37Said. I'm going to follow this up.
- 11:39But essentially the night before she was going.
- 11:42To do the shooting, and this is the dark comedy. Part,
- 11:45she's making the.
- 11:46You know, the the recording that she'll then put online, you know,
- 11:50for people to see after she does this act.
- 11:53And the first time the camera stops midway because there's a mandatory update
- 11:59for the software for the camera, which is which is pretty fucking funny.
- 12:03And then she restarts.
- 12:04It again and her computer actually goes to a blue screen of death,
- 12:09windows, which you can assume is because
- 12:12there was an update that was broken because the update got pushed to a camera.
- 12:15So it's it's kind of funny when you see it happen.
- 12:20But then even more so the next day at school,
- 12:23there's another shooting, not at the school, but at the mall.
- 12:28And for whatever reason, during this school
- 12:31shooting or during this daytime shooting or whenever it may have happened,
- 12:35they lose one of their classmates, he gets killed.
- 12:39And through the trauma of that moment, the person who was her bully,
- 12:46or one of
- 12:46her bullies, really, like, breaks down and embraces her.
- 12:50And they have they share this moment and they come together,
- 12:54and she comes together with the two of the classmates that
- 12:57never really, you know, paid her any mind and or bullied her before.
- 13:02And they all become like,
- 13:04you know, a gun activist, you know, anti-gun activist group.
- 13:08And she becomes the speaker because.
- 13:11People actually do say.
- 13:12Like, you seem like, you know what you're doing when you're when you're.
- 13:15Talking, which is funny because.
- 13:18She barely talks.
- 13:19But she had information on.
- 13:22Oh, well, female shooters, do, you know, have committed mass shootings.
- 13:26And I also thought that was funny of like, oh, here's a way to put.
- 13:29This in here, because,
- 13:31you know, there's a bunch of people probably like questioning viewers
- 13:34of the audience going, yeah, I don't know what a female shooter really, you know?
- 13:39So it kind of does cover that.
- 13:40You know, if the the audience is skeptical of this, did you telling the audience.
- 13:46Were you aware of the song?
- 13:48I don't like Mondays.
- 13:50Have you ever heard that song?
- 13:52She refers. To it.
- 13:53I just I had.
- 13:55I'll tell you.
- 13:56I know that song, girl.
- 13:58I used to date way back when I was young.
- 14:00She loved that song.
- 14:02Like, I distinctly remember her
- 14:05buying that, a cassette of that tape.
- 14:08Like in a thrift store.
- 14:11And she played that song over and over again.
- 14:15What are you trying to tell us?
- 14:16I you know, I know, I remember that, you know what?
- 14:20I'm not going to say that. So that's a bad joke. That's not.
- 14:23The thing is, I'll tell you right now that this person also, I guarantee.
- 14:27You that they listen to that song and they interpreted something different.
- 14:31One of the one of the best examples.
- 14:32Of this I can give you is everyone knows the the painting,
- 14:35the scream, you know, the handsome face.
- 14:40There was once
- 14:41a joke in The Simpsons about that painting.
- 14:45And she got very upset. And I was like, what?
- 14:47What is the problem? I'm like, why are you.
- 14:48So it's like that painting. It shouldn't.
- 14:51You can't you shouldn't, like, make jokes about it.
- 14:53That painting is about a man's.
- 14:54Reaction to the Holocaust.
- 14:57And that painting was like from the 1800s.
- 15:02That was pretty old.
- 15:03So I'm like, what?
- 15:06No, it literally cannot be about that
- 15:09because it was painted 50 fucking years before it happened.
- 15:14So for all I know, she thought that it was just a person
- 15:17who just really didn't like working on Mondays.
- 15:19I really don't know. Anyways,
- 15:23you did you think that it was.
- 15:28I guess, I guess the big the big thing is,
- 15:31is it excusing that she considered this, or is it
- 15:35trying to.
- 15:38I think the movie is trying to let.
- 15:40People understand how someone can.
- 15:42Get to that point.
- 15:45And actually, I thought the best parts of the film were
- 15:50that the.
- 15:50Younger actress, I, yeah, go.
- 15:54Oh, no, no, no, that's not her.
- 15:56Jordan. Correct. Okay.
- 15:57They just have released this actress here, which is a weird thing to have.
- 16:00Yeah, I think that's why I.
- 16:01I meant to write down her name because I did enjoy her performance, and.
- 16:06Yeah, but, yeah, I don't know why they have her listed so far down.
- 16:09To be honest.
- 16:10I thought that the stuff with her was.
- 16:13My favorite part of the film because, seeing her, you know,
- 16:20work herself up into this, to this.
- 16:22Level. Of.
- 16:23What I'm.
- 16:24Yeah, this character that she's playing.
- 16:27And then having.
- 16:29The, you know, it come undone,
- 16:34I thought was fascinating to kind of watch.
- 16:37And it's
- 16:40I don't think it's excusing or anything like that.
- 16:42I think it's just trying to
- 16:46bring a. Little bit of understanding, like.
- 16:47One of the.
- 16:48I know Marilyn.
- 16:49Manson is not like a
- 16:50great person or anything, but he did have an incredible reaction.
- 16:53Quote, once, because when.
- 16:58Columbine happened,
- 16:59because those two kids listened to Marilyn Manson.
- 17:04Of course, you know, I guess what side of the political spectrum white people.
- 17:10Were like, well, that's what did it.
- 17:11It was this music.
- 17:14And he was being interviewed.
- 17:18Maybe this was in, bowling for Columbine, actually,
- 17:21he was being interviewed, and he said someone asked him,
- 17:24what would you say to those kids if you could talk to them?
- 17:27Like, right now, you know, they're the ones who did who did the shooting?
- 17:31He said, I wouldn't
- 17:33say anything. I'd.
- 17:36I'd ask them questions.
- 17:38Or like, I wouldn't say anything.
- 17:40I would listen.
- 17:43Because that's what they need, you know, they need.
- 17:45Yeah.
- 17:46I think this does bring a light to, not a.
- 17:49Yeah.
- 17:49No, we can't condone what hurt she was planning out.
- 17:53No, not at all. Of course. Not.
- 17:54No, of course not.
- 17:55But it does bring up something interesting.
- 17:58So I had read recently and I should.
- 18:01I should find the journalist who, interviews,
- 18:06shooters who, you know, haven't committed suicide
- 18:09or didn't, you know, get put down by the police, sir,
- 18:13who are alive and in prison for a mass shooting?
- 18:17And I think she said she heard her question to,
- 18:22you know, every one of them was, was there anything that could have stopped you?
- 18:27And most
- 18:28of them are like, anything could have stopped me.
- 18:32It would have taken one moment, to to not go through with it.
- 18:37So, I mean, that was kind of what, character happened.
- 18:41I mean, yeah, she was derailed by another shooting, buddy, but it's all it took.
- 18:47It proved point that it. Yeah. Like these. Yeah.
- 18:49We're not dealing with for the most part.
- 18:51And you can't we can't put a blanket over all shooters.
- 18:54But, like, we're not dealing with monsters here.
- 18:56We're dealing, with a human transfusion.
- 18:59Kids.
- 19:00Yeah, that needs somebody to just needs that.
- 19:03Hey, you're a human.
- 19:05I'm talking to you.
- 19:06You're accepted.
- 19:08I, you know, so.
- 19:09No, it is. Yeah, it is.
- 19:11That's. Yeah.
- 19:12I mean, that's deterrents like.
- 19:13Society has deterrents in place for a lot of things.
- 19:18Buying a gun is not there in this country.
- 19:22And that's why it's such a uniquely American problem.
- 19:25You know it's just it's not a deterrent.
- 19:28It's so easy to do.
- 19:30Why not? Why wouldn't I do that if I can't?
- 19:33If I'm angry enough and I, you know,
- 19:36I was bullied, in high school for a couple of years.
- 19:39There was, like, this weird couple, just, like two year portion where I fell out
- 19:45of favor with some friends of mine, and I was sort of on my own for a while.
- 19:50And, I mean, I'll be honest, it wasn't until
- 19:54this is a weird thing to admit that it wasn't
- 19:56until I was able to, you know,
- 19:59deliver some violence
- 20:00onto somebody that it stopped.
- 20:04That was how it worked.
- 20:06It was like, oh, don't fuck around anymore.
- 20:10And that that was that was how it worked.
- 20:13Not proud of it.
- 20:14You know, it's
- 20:14not something that like, Guy would say is the only it's not the only answer.
- 20:18It's probably not the answer to it. It just happened.
- 20:22And that shaped the way that for a long.
- 20:25Time.
- 20:26I dealt with anyone who stepped out of line with me.
- 20:31I would just, you know, I was large.
- 20:34I'm big enough guy that I can physically, you know, tell someone who's talking
- 20:38too much to shut the fuck up and, you know, and and back it up if I need to.
- 20:43And I did that for a long time.
- 20:44It took a while to.
- 20:45Get out of that because it was easy.
- 20:48And people respond to.
- 20:49It and people responded to. It immediately.
- 20:52So, you know, when I, when I watched this movie, I.
- 20:57Understood what could push somebody to that
- 21:00to that point.
- 21:04Because it's a failure of of things around her.
- 21:07Right? Yeah.
- 21:08I mean. Like, they're responsible for their. Actions.
- 21:11There is a responsibility on her parents.
- 21:14You know, responsibility of the gun being out.
- 21:17Maybe she's not being,
- 21:18you know, interacted with her parents or family enough.
- 21:22You know, are.
- 21:23Her parents shown as a child at all? No.
- 21:27No, I.
- 21:28Think that's very, very, very much on purpose.
- 21:31Has a long leash of.
- 21:32Yes. There's no supervision.
- 21:34It seems going on.
- 21:35Her father works, like, all day. I think he was. He was what?
- 21:38He was a he was a cop.
- 21:40Or he was in. The military or something. Yeah.
- 21:42So he's not home at all.
- 21:43So she seems very much on her.
- 21:46Own for the majority of every of every scene.
- 21:49It's not even like voices in the background.
- 21:51Yeah.
- 21:53So I think.
- 21:54That that's again, like the isolation and the not having others
- 21:59to help you out of this mental fog.
- 22:03It it can and it does
- 22:06when you have access. To.
- 22:09Those types of implements of, of violence.
- 22:13It'll cascade.
- 22:14And even more so when you're, when you grow up where that is common.
- 22:20It's not like, you know, she was doing something that, oh,
- 22:23no one's ever done this before.
- 22:25She was planning something that she had already read and seen dozens.
- 22:30Of people do every year.
- 22:32So you know that when you see violence
- 22:35or you see suicide, I think it like increases
- 22:40the people who see it to maybe commit these sorts of things.
- 22:45Like we we know that exposure to a certain amount of it
- 22:50can, at least for suicide, can contribute, To other.
- 22:55How do you think the film,
- 22:57how do you think then the characters in the film, though?
- 23:02Every
- 23:05okay.
- 23:05Everyone else comes off as fucking insane.
- 23:08This, that that's the thing is like the end of the movie.
- 23:10I'm like,
- 23:12the Alana Ames character is the worst person on earth, is one of the worst.
- 23:16People on earth.
- 23:17She's pretty terrible. Yeah.
- 23:18She fucking she could have killed if it wasn't for dumb luck.
- 23:23Which is exactly what stopped the Emma character from doing what she did.
- 23:27If it wasn't for dumb luck, it's that kid being found. Him.
- 23:31She would have led to his death because she couldn't just own up to the.
- 23:36Parents.
- 23:37And felt so comfortable
- 23:39enough to speak to any of the parents about what she had done.
- 23:42It's very much in line.
- 23:44But the righteousness that she has, it was, I don't know is
- 23:51it's, I wonder
- 23:55did the movie want me to fucking hate that character
- 23:58because my goodness did I hate that character.
- 24:02Yeah I do think, I do think they wanted you to hate her.
- 24:05Okay.
- 24:06Do you think that Alana, was definitely playing that the the bitch?
- 24:12I mean, she was just in all of her even mannerisms.
- 24:16You know, I think it was, Yeah. Purposeful.
- 24:19Yeah.
- 24:20I don't like her, but I, I like to say with this movie is
- 24:25all of them actually committed?
- 24:28Awful.
- 24:29Like, did awful things.
- 24:30Like, the worst thing is Zendaya.
- 24:32Emma is the only one who it it's the worst thing I never did,
- 24:37right. Yeah.
- 24:38Like oh actually didn't impact anyone any ultimately.
- 24:43And maybe.
- 24:44Benefited the people around her because she
- 24:47then turns to activism like not again.
- 24:50It could be that she the guilt she feels
- 24:52or that she still has these impulses and this is her covering it up.
- 24:56But at.
- 24:57The same time, it doesn't matter because, you know, and that's also,
- 24:59I think a little bit about the movie is like
- 25:01when we find out a piece of information about somebody, even if it's just
- 25:04their thought, you know, does it
- 25:07how does it impact the rest of us or how do we react to it?
- 25:10Right. Yeah.
- 25:11And it's like she never did this action, but because of what
- 25:16the action is and what it could have done, it makes.
- 25:20Everybody think that she's way.
- 25:22Worse and while these people are terrible.
- 25:25They really are.
- 25:26You know, like, I don't like, like most of the characters.
- 25:29I don't like their interactions.
- 25:30I don't like their reactions.
- 25:32I don't like I even find.
- 25:35When Charlie, has.
- 25:37An interaction with his coworker, Which hurt.
- 25:40What? Oh, let me look up the name of this guy.
- 25:42Yeah.
- 25:42Hayley Goetz plays her.
- 25:46That was is it me?
- 25:47Sure. But, yeah, she had.
- 25:49Kind of a weird reaction as well, but it's a little bit more normal.
- 25:55But then it gets weird.
- 25:57Do you think it's normal to be like,
- 26:00hey, I'm telling you, this scenario where someone.
- 26:03They were 14 had, had these thoughts.
- 26:07And they almost did this.
- 26:08And call the cops. Call the cops, call them.
- 26:11What the fuck are we talking about?
- 26:12Call the. Cops. Okay, this is why you're going to. This is my.
- 26:15What a huge sticking point. Yes.
- 26:17Yeah. Like, what are you. Are you insane?
- 26:18Well, I want to call the cops, okay?
- 26:20If one person says it, I go, okay.
- 26:23Little strange, you know? Like, what do you mean?
- 26:25Call the cops? It's something she never did.
- 26:27There's no evidence of was 15 years ago.
- 26:29Like we talking about here? When?
- 26:32When two people say it, I'm kind of like. What?
- 26:35What did it like, say
- 26:38this, I don't know.
- 26:39I don't know if this is because, like, this is the film maker
- 26:43and he is Norwegian.
- 26:45Christopher Bigley.
- 26:48Yeah. Yeah.
- 26:49But like, I don't know, maybe.
- 26:51Can you, like, in Norway, can you like, post
- 26:54call the police about things like I don't
- 26:57I didn't find it, I did I maybe they do take like tips
- 27:01about mentally unstable people who might be aggressive.
- 27:05So don't know.
- 27:06That I get but like.
- 27:08But you know it's not anymore.
- 27:10Yeah like or shit.
- 27:12But I don't. Think so I don't know I don't know, but yeah I.
- 27:14Don't know what the film has for that or people had that reaction.
- 27:20The film has like I think more than.
- 27:23Enough chances.
- 27:25To to show.
- 27:28You she's still on the edge.
- 27:30And like yelling at somebody who almost hit you in a.
- 27:32Crosswalk because they're going through a red light
- 27:35to me is not like, well, this person is clearly going to murder some like I.
- 27:39Don't that I know, but but I like
- 27:43but I like the way it's used because we are seeing it from.
- 27:46Charlie's head.
- 27:47Which Charlie's mind is cracked and and it's it's cause.
- 27:53You read in all the time it seems though it I mean, it's.
- 27:56Yeah.
- 27:56From the first introduction of when They meet, he's a little.
- 28:01He's an anxiety ridden.
- 28:02Person and a little bit all over the place, so.
- 28:06Yeah. And actually, I like.
- 28:08So how Charlie is, he's a victim of his own advice because he doesn't take.
- 28:13His own advice.
- 28:14Because he says to Emma, you know, hey, if you ever talk to, like, you know,
- 28:18have you ever talked to anybody about this like you've,
- 28:20you've been holding this end for for this long?
- 28:23You've never discussed it with anybody.
- 28:25You know, clearly for some good reasons because of the reaction that you get.
- 28:28But like you talk to a psychiatrist, something Because you
- 28:33you can't this trauma will eat you alive.
- 28:36And then he has no one that he feels like he can talk.
- 28:39To about.
- 28:40It because, on the one occasion when he does, which is.
- 28:44With Hayley.
- 28:45It's like, oh, she sounds like a psychopath.
- 28:47And he doesn't believe that, like, he really doesn't believe that.
- 28:50And then he he reacts like a psychopath.
- 28:53Yeah, that's the.
- 28:54Thing is, because he's just looking for someone else to be like, no, she's not.
- 28:59Fucking insane.
- 29:01But he runs into, like, the three.
- 29:03Wrong people to ask about it, you. Know?
- 29:06And when you're in a situation like that
- 29:09and you're looking for support of like, and it's
- 29:12I shouldn't that this isn't a big this isn't a big deal.
- 29:16Like as big a deal is as I as I want it to be. Right.
- 29:20It takes a lot of emotional.
- 29:23Energy to ask one person to be like.
- 29:26Am I fucking crazy?
- 29:27Or is
- 29:28or is this not maybe not that big of a deal
- 29:30because everyone else seems to be acting like that.
- 29:32And when that person is like, no, no, no, that person
- 29:34out of the person is not like, you should call the cops.
- 29:38You don't want to.
- 29:39Even have that conversation again.
- 29:40And he doesn't like you.
- 29:42He does it in the right situation.
- 29:45Charlie, Emma and like her father or someone and this and like
- 29:50a psychiatrist should have all sat down and been like, hey, this is what happens.
- 29:54Yeah, you all should. Know about. This,
- 29:57you know, and let's
- 29:59see what we can, you know, do I just feel like again, like.
- 30:03Conversating I feel would have been the way that the.
- 30:06Solutions. Approach you. Yeah.
- 30:08Yeah yeah. Like the, the.
- 30:10The craziness that ensues or the drama that ensues.
- 30:14I mean, so what did you take as, I mean, I think we, we get shots with the editing
- 30:20of what Charlie is imagining.
- 30:23I could not have done be doing, I think the.
- 30:26Montage where he can not see the young,
- 30:30her being with the young, her, the the when the shooter is.
- 30:33Kind of.
- 30:35It is dark, but hilarious.
- 30:37I made that montage, so. Cracks me up.
- 30:40And then you kind of are like, he's looking.
- 30:43He's looking through the book.
- 30:44Of when he gets the the.
- 30:47I guess, like the high fashion.
- 30:48Of the women with the guns and the rifles and,
- 30:52he because it's shots.
- 30:55I mean, yeah.
- 30:56There's a large portion of the.
- 30:57Country where that's fetishized. Yeah,
- 31:01yeah.
- 31:01But so we're getting all of these quick
- 31:05kind of edits of what he could be imagining.
- 31:09There's a one.
- 31:10There's one quick one where it's like, I think that's it is reality.
- 31:14Where he talks to Mike about calling off the wedding.
- 31:17I think it might be afterwards or the day afterwards.
- 31:21No, that's in his head.
- 31:22No, that is in his head.
- 31:24That's in his head.
- 31:24Like Mike.
- 31:25Mike saying like, get out of the fucking country.
- 31:28And like, I'll, I mean, no, that's that's in Charlie's head.
- 31:32I and I think that actually now thinking back on it,
- 31:36if he would have actually spoken to Mike,
- 31:39I think it would. Have been that. Bad.
- 31:41Nope. Mike would have been like, no, no, no, no, let's sit down.
- 31:43This is this is upsetting.
- 31:46And, you know, and even I was like, hey, this is that's really fucked.
- 31:51But like, I thought about it and, you know, it was both.
- 31:54I really think Mike would have been the one to bring him down, but
- 31:58he doesn't feel like he can talk to him because of.
- 32:01Yeah, Rachel's.
- 32:03And also. Jessica's. Or.
- 32:06Yeah.
- 32:06Like the whole situation is probably just so uncomfortable.
- 32:08You know, you don't want to you don't want to embarrass yourself.
- 32:12To a friend when you're looking for support.
- 32:15And in his mind, right then he wasn't going to get it.
- 32:18So he backs away from it.
- 32:19So it's another example of like if someone felt comfortable.
- 32:23Reaching out for support and thinking that they would receive it,
- 32:27it would save them a shitload of trauma.
- 32:30Right.
- 32:30And or, you know, three of the, you know, our two main characters.
- 32:35Suffer from that where.
- 32:37They don't.
- 32:38Feel comfortable enough to entrust what they're thinking to somebody else.
- 32:42And be open. And
- 32:45and that's what leads to it.
- 32:46And then the one person that he does it go well.
- 32:50And, you know.
- 32:51And that really breaks him.
- 32:53For sure. And then.
- 32:55Yeah, and then I we aren't.
- 32:58Do you I mean, from what I saw, we are getting some, perspectives
- 33:04that are from Emma's, what she wants to happen or what
- 33:07she needs from him, which I think were really great.
- 33:11You know, like, when he comes back into the apartment after the awful
- 33:14night of the the reveal, and she wants she clearly she needs him to love her
- 33:21to accept her, to be okay with her past or,
- 33:25you know, again, it's like I, I feel for the girl
- 33:28because is being bullied and a 14 year old and no connection.
- 33:33So but we went all over all that but so yeah.
- 33:37And you get these moments of Emma and when she wants
- 33:40what she wants is just like love.
- 33:44Basically from Charlie when we get her.
- 33:47Her instances, of what she imagines that she wants to happen.
- 33:52So I found that really that was,
- 33:56I think, the the editing, the use of the editing and of what
- 34:00the people are imagining in their heads,
- 34:02versus and and it would just be so simple of.
- 34:06Right, you know, like just communicating it like.
- 34:08But again.
- 34:09As simple as that's. Being. Human.
- 34:11Is that right? Yeah. Like that's our.
- 34:13That's our the hardest thing that we have
- 34:15and all we have above like all of your animals.
- 34:17Is our ability to communicate, but we still can communicate very well.
- 34:21Yeah.
- 34:21And so I know,
- 34:25I mean, I would like to watch it again to, kind of do so many quick edits.
- 34:30There's so many, you know, just this imagining of what could happen,
- 34:34like even patterns and imagining that.
- 34:36She slaughtered the entire wedding guests and.
- 34:40The party, and that's, you know, I.
- 34:43MRNA was about. Half.
- 34:44So when I was it was a smaller theater.
- 34:46But it's about Hessel.
- 34:47That, that that.
- 34:51Shot noise with that DJ setting up his equipment
- 34:56made a like half the theater gasp.
- 34:59They thought like it. Was it happening?
- 35:02Yeah. They were like, oh my future.
- 35:04Yeah, yeah.
- 35:05They they 100% like, oh, you know, you heard that from people.
- 35:10Which is.
- 35:10Another good example, you know, again, of the film really.
- 35:14Playing, I mean, and maybe.
- 35:15The thing, maybe it plays all the angles too much.
- 35:18Maybe, Zendaya like.
- 35:22Hey, we saw you think we saw you smoked heroin in the street.
- 35:28Therefore, you cannot be part of our wedding.
- 35:29You should be. What the fuck is wrong with you?
- 35:32It's like, oh, yeah.
- 35:35But that's a comment that was also a reaction
- 35:37to because her initial reaction to it was whatever.
- 35:41She's she's.
- 35:42DJ like if she smokes like they both were kind of,
- 35:46if you. Know what I thought.
- 35:49She was like in the beginning, that conversation
- 35:51that they're having with each other about it, that they saw her,
- 35:54I thought she was more kind of.
- 35:55Mellow about it, where.
- 35:56She was like, no, she was she.
- 35:58Was really her.
- 35:59No. I thought she was the one who wanted to then like go.
- 36:02And he was like, I don't think so.
- 36:04I think she was the one that wanted something to happen.
- 36:07And then his. Friends were pushing.
- 36:08I remember the opening, I don't remember.
- 36:10Yeah, I think, I think that's what happen is that.
- 36:13Yeah, he he caught it.
- 36:15He saw Charlie out on the street.
- 36:17I was like, look, I think that's our DJ.
- 36:18But then like when they're discussing it at the table, it seemed that Rachel and.
- 36:22Mike were both encouraging them to fire her.
- 36:26And the DJ and Emma and Charlie were like,
- 36:30I don't really know if we need to fire her.
- 36:32And I thought Emma was.
- 36:33Like, I'm not going to, I'm not going to do that.
- 36:36You know.
- 36:38So then I thought, is I so is it just.
- 36:41Like a reversal because she felt that she need to do something?
- 36:46In reaction to their reaction.
- 36:48Right. Like, yes. Friends.
- 36:50And now you knew this about her?
- 36:51I thought it was, and I.
- 36:53Well, we'll have to watch again at some point, I guess.
- 36:56But I thought it was her kind of doing that.
- 36:59Okay. You want me to.
- 37:01Do. That?
- 37:02Make sure that bad things.
- 37:03People don't do bad things, and I'm a good person.
- 37:05And, you know, because the friends were the ones kind of pushing to fire the DJ.
- 37:10And so that works.
- 37:10I took that, as, you know, if other people if I have to get fucking persecuted
- 37:16for this shit. Right.
- 37:17I didn't actually do anything.
- 37:19So she took it out on this stage.
- 37:21She takes out on her. Yeah.
- 37:23The DJ and kind of a reversal of like, no, I'm gonna, you know, say bad.
- 37:28This was bad or doing drugs. Bad.
- 37:30You know, I it was kind of,
- 37:33it was kind of, really crazy to fire your DJ on the day
- 37:39of smoking heroin at some point, I don't know.
- 37:42Protip, though, if you're having an argument with
- 37:45someone who's hired you and you're still expecting them
- 37:49after you say you're a cunt.
- 37:53When they say you're fired, don't act surprised.
- 37:56Not like up until that moment. Because.
- 37:58Because she only acts. She.
- 38:00Because I think she only says you're fired after, the.
- 38:05DJ calls and there's she's like, you're being a real cunt.
- 38:08And and then she gets fired and she's like, you're firing me?
- 38:11I'm like, well.
- 38:12What did you think the.
- 38:14Yeah. Like, what did you think that that.
- 38:16Particular statement would have led to like.
- 38:19Oh, you think this would have been like, you're like, yeah, like, oh never.
- 38:23Mind. You're right, I am you.
- 38:25You know what, John?
- 38:27I can't wait to play your song.
- 38:29Yeah. I thought that was wild.
- 38:32And I, I want to look deeper and I go, I gotta think more.
- 38:36About their dance instructor.
- 38:38She was a little rough, dude.
- 38:40Well, but again, like.
- 38:41But why? But why?
- 38:43So why is she so why is she like that?
- 38:45When they encounter somebody who,
- 38:48if you don't do the exact plans.
- 38:51The exact steps that have been given to you as the acceptable things,
- 38:55you are wasting my fucking time.
- 38:57And you are, you know. What are you doing?
- 39:00And that's she goes from,
- 39:02like, a dance instructor to as if she was.
- 39:07The dance director for a major Broadway show.
- 39:10And people are fucking up.
- 39:12Just because these two people are.
- 39:14Having fun dancing to their own song.
- 39:18You know, practicing that dance for the other wedding.
- 39:21Yeah. And it was, it shows like.
- 39:23How close.
- 39:24People are to going over the edge of normal to insane, right.
- 39:31And that's all it took for her to to go over that.
- 39:33And there was, there was two things that,
- 39:37Charlie finally,
- 39:40when he can not confront, but when he speaks.
- 39:43To Rachel and Mike later, like in, Rachel's office.
- 39:48And he's the first person to bring up.
- 39:50You almost killed the boy like you only didn't.
- 39:53Yeah.
- 39:54You know, because, they let her off the hook way.
- 39:58Too easily on that.
- 39:59And Mike doesn't say.
- 39:59Anything, and I know it's because, like, Charlie is supposed to be.
- 40:03A weaker character. So I get why he didn't press that.
- 40:06But as a watcher, I found that a little frustrating.
- 40:09Or I was like,
- 40:11of all the people in that room,
- 40:13this person should not be having the like,
- 40:16be getting off so easily on what they did.
- 40:19I thought. That's.
- 40:20Who forces.
- 40:22The conversation and that, yeah, that is one thing that I had of just
- 40:27I was like, it's not a cool thing to do if you're forcing everybody
- 40:32to say the worst thing they've ever done, you it should be,
- 40:36you know, a little bit like. Yes.
- 40:37Okay, look, you know, and this reveals is shocking, right?
- 40:41Right.
- 40:41And she probably just should said something else. Yeah.
- 40:44She said something else, but she was, you know, the the boos.
- 40:47Were heavy and yeah, lips.
- 40:50Were loose and so but it's like
- 40:53no, that should be a, bubble of safety here.
- 40:57You know, she's not revealing that she murdered someone yesterday.
- 41:01She's not revealing, you know.
- 41:03You know, it's not an immediate.
- 41:05Rachel's reaction is like, there's a there needs to be an immediate.
- 41:09Something needs to be done about what she did.
- 41:12What am. Yeah. As a child.
- 41:14And it's like,
- 41:15I don't know if you're already forcing everybody to reveal these things.
- 41:18I do think.
- 41:19You need to create a little bit of a safe space here.
- 41:22And like.
- 41:23Let's just remember she's not her friend.
- 41:27She's, Rachel's.
- 41:29Friends with Pattinson. Yeah. It's,
- 41:33that that stands.
- 41:34Yeah.
- 41:35They make a point of it that, like, those two weren't friends before.
- 41:39Yeah.
- 41:40And, I don't know, maybe there's some envy,
- 41:44because I don't really get a lot
- 41:46of great connection between Rachel and Mike.
- 41:49I don't, I don't know, like, how their situation is.
- 41:51We don't go very deep into it.
- 41:52But maybe there's a certain, you know, thing of, of, jealousy,
- 41:58towards Emma because she doesn't seem friendly to her ever.
- 42:02No. And, you know, she even, like, she didn't really her reaction
- 42:06that she later does, on a, her speech,
- 42:09you know, being invited as a maid of honor, her interior
- 42:13reality reaction was, you don't have any real friends.
- 42:16Yeah. And that's why you're asking me.
- 42:19And she also.
- 42:19Apparently she hates Charlie a little bit, too.
- 42:22It seems that it's kind of revealed because she's like,
- 42:25you deserve each other. You you know, that's.
- 42:28I guess you could say that she's accepting because.
- 42:31Charlie's accepting her going through with the.
- 42:33Marriage or whatever is Rachel.
- 42:34Is like, okay, well, now you're a trash person, too.
- 42:36Yeah. No, I that's the thing.
- 42:38I think that Rachel has feelings for Charlie
- 42:40and they were never reciprocated or, you know, or anything like that.
- 42:44And that's led to a lot of animosity in her.
- 42:48At least that's how the movie plays it off.
- 42:50It plays it off like she has
- 42:53just daggers.
- 42:54For for these two folks.
- 42:57I don't know if she overplayed it, you know, as he played it, but I don't think.
- 43:01So, because at a certain point, the director would have noticed,
- 43:05you know, like how hard she was going into that side.
- 43:08But, yeah, I was, She was one of the more puzzling aspects
- 43:12to understand, in
- 43:15the film was like, what's her deal?
- 43:18What is she?
- 43:20You know, the crazy part is, though,
- 43:23and maybe I'm giving us as people too much credit, but
- 43:28I when I, you know, I, I walked out and I was like, but I mean
- 43:31there's really kind of wild reactions.
- 43:34Overly wild reaction. Yeah.
- 43:36And I think that's kind of also the point.
- 43:38But then I thought about it and I go, you know what though,
- 43:42people might, might react this way.
- 43:45Like people, if you look in the discourse, I mean, you had the internet, you know,
- 43:49heightened different freaking reaction.
- 43:51And so like, oh, you look at,
- 43:53you know, the talk around the discussion around this of like, whether
- 43:57she should have even been a school.
- 43:59She would be school shooter.
- 44:00And yeah, you know, all that discussion, it's like, okay,
- 44:04maybe this would be people's reactions.
- 44:07Like maybe they're, you know.
- 44:09I mean, remember for every good.
- 44:12That it is done,
- 44:13you know, if anyone is accused of anything nowadays, they're guilty first.
- 44:18And unless your, you know, a politician.
- 44:22But for everyone else, as soon as.
- 44:25You're
- 44:27someone. Says
- 44:29an accusation, they're guilty.
- 44:31You're guilty until proven innocent.
- 44:33And even then
- 44:35I don't really think it matters.
- 44:36Like here's what.
- 44:37Because what happens if if something is accused
- 44:39and it goes to court and it gets dropped or whatever the argument is?
- 44:43Oh, well, it was years ago
- 44:45and there wasn't, you know, how would you have evidence
- 44:46for something that was, you know, supposedly happened years ago?
- 44:49This person probably did do that.
- 44:51So that doesn't even matter either.
- 44:53So it's I, I.
- 44:54Perception comes in.
- 44:56Yeah. I mean like if.
- 44:57Let's say like the argument was there's a video that pops up of of Zendaya
- 45:03as a 13 year old girl and she says,
- 45:08I would kill those people if I had the chance, she would be done.
- 45:13She her career would be over.
- 45:15It wouldn't matter that she was 13.
- 45:16It wouldn't matter at all.
- 45:18People would crucify her over something like that.
- 45:21And so no, I think the film is properly portraying
- 45:26the way that the greater the larger public would react to anything like that.
- 45:31But but then patent since character
- 45:34after out of all of his, you know, madness.
- 45:38And how how far he goes down into a whole.
- 45:40There's not being able to deal with this.
- 45:43He says the most.
- 45:45Insightful thing in the whole
- 45:46movie, one of the most insightful things in the whole movie,
- 45:50because, you know, you're you're
- 45:53angry at her for something that she confessed,
- 45:56you know, to thinking about doing and to planning.
- 45:59But if you look out on the street, there are thousands of people
- 46:03who have had thoughts like that every day, and they don't do it.
- 46:06Yeah. And you don't think about it.
- 46:08You don't know.
- 46:10You just don't know.
- 46:11And it's just your knowledge of knowing that that has turned you into this.
- 46:14And it's.
- 46:16It may.
- 46:17Be like out of character, maybe a little bit at that point because,
- 46:20you know, he's he's so thinking, but he's thinking of it 100 different ways.
- 46:24Trying to rationalize.
- 46:25Yeah, he's trying to to come to terms with it.
- 46:28And that to me was yeah. No.
- 46:31It was the summation.
- 46:32Yeah.
- 46:33I was I say that's kind of like a little bit of a summation of
- 46:36like what the director I think is trying to get the point across here.
- 46:40You know, that what happens in your head doesn't happen, in reality.
- 46:45But we all treat our perception
- 46:49of what we hear and what we think as reality, you know?
- 46:55And,
- 46:56I guess to, I mean, wrap it all up, unless you have anything.
- 47:00No, no, I was, I mean, we
- 47:03we talked about so much about it in such a short time already.
- 47:06Yeah. Bush burying trauma.
- 47:09Allen is a horrible person.
- 47:10She's the most sane one.
- 47:12I, I I'm okay. I'm.
- 47:14I like the ending.
- 47:16I actually genuinely think.
- 47:17Like the way that everyone's going to react to.
- 47:20What happened at the wedding.
- 47:22They're going to have.
- 47:23Each other and they don't need anyone else, and they'll be fine.
- 47:28It's how I view the ending like yep
- 47:31they're going to be fine just with the two of them.
- 47:33It also just it occurs to you that what happens in a relationship
- 47:38is its own little interior world.
- 47:41And everybody's outside
- 47:43opinion of it really doesn't matter.
- 47:47You know, like it's a, it's, it's between the two people.
- 47:50It really is. It's between the two people.
- 47:53And there's that aspect of it.
- 47:56But I also liked The Full Circle,
- 47:59where it starts off of where
- 48:04he's,
- 48:06you know, coming on to her at the coffee shop
- 48:08and she doesn't hear him.
- 48:10And so then he she's like, let's start over.
- 48:12And that's kind of their thing, you know, a little bit.
- 48:15She tried it, I think to show the movie.
- 48:18To be like, yeah.
- 48:20I see that this is really you're spiraling over this.
- 48:23I'm still me.
- 48:24Let's like, hey, let's start over.
- 48:26And that's kind of their like their go to, to help.
- 48:31Which there was.
- 48:33Before midnight. Linklater's Before Midnight.
- 48:36Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:37That's one of my favorite scenes where he.
- 48:39Tries to stand two.
- 48:41Thirds of the way through the film.
- 48:42Like, yeah, you, you know, or actually no.
- 48:44He says in the same scene, he tries it, he gets stopped.
- 48:49But then later in that scene as they're, as they're sitting at night,
- 48:54she starts to, you know, to, to play along with it.
- 48:57So yeah.
- 48:59I yeah, I thought it was a, it was, it was great.
- 49:02I enjoyed watching it a lot.
- 49:03Yeah.
- 49:04I don't I'm not going to really care about like what other people think towards it
- 49:06because I know that people are going to be very locked into.
- 49:11Oh, you're making a joke of this.
- 49:12I don't really I don't think it's doing that at all.
- 49:16I think that it's helping.
- 49:18I think that laughing at really awful things
- 49:21while trying to discuss them helps, trying to discuss them first.
- 49:26So you know, that's that was Mel Brooks's entire thing, which I'm going
- 49:30to make the worst person in the world look like a fucking clown.
- 49:35And that helps me deal with
- 49:38those awful people.
- 49:42So I think it's, you know,
- 49:45I don't think it's to that extent that the he's doing this in this film,
- 49:48but it's like
- 49:49we want to be able to talk about this, but I'm going to break it up a little bit
- 49:52and give you some like darkly comic, you know, comedy.
- 49:54Her computer crashing was so.
- 49:56Yeah that was the and the kid did she's a toy toys try to like yeah reboot.
- 50:02You get into character.
- 50:03You do the thing then she can't do it. Yeah.
- 50:06It was there was a lot of funny moments and yeah, the darkly funny moments.
- 50:10But I also think there was I do think it kind of opens up the conversation
- 50:14a little bit of like it's it's a small thing, but patterns and magic.
- 50:20Mentions his bullying.
- 50:21Charlie mentions his bullying, that he's not sure
- 50:24if it really caused somebody to move or not.
- 50:26But there's a moment that Emma is trying to explain,
- 50:29I think how awful the bullying was like that.
- 50:32Her daily harassment. And
- 50:37he kind of doesn't get it.
- 50:39It does seem like that's his reaction.
- 50:42Seems almost like that's what caused it.
- 50:46Like, this is what caused I for my memory, I don't remember.
- 50:49Yeah I don't.
- 50:50He doesn't have his like he doesn't kind of he goes what
- 50:53I was a bad you know he didn't like see it as that bad.
- 50:57It seemed like his reaction.
- 50:59Which is something he didn't get bullied.
- 51:00I well, that's what.
- 51:02I'm. Saying.
- 51:03Like. Yeah.
- 51:04Yeah.
- 51:04Like he does think. That. He.
- 51:08Doesn't understand how impactful it can. Be.
- 51:10Yeah, exactly.
- 51:11And I think that was a point that I kind of picked up on and I, I liked
- 51:16was like and I think it does open up the conversation of,
- 51:19yeah, bullying is a massive problem.
- 51:22That we need to acknowledge and open up.
- 51:25The discussion about, like, and I think, again.
- 51:28If, if the Emma character went through and she was a mass shooter.
- 51:32Awful, terrible.
- 51:33But yeah, I do think it does open up the conversation of like, well,
- 51:37what led this now seemingly emotionally stable person to.
- 51:42I think the other and again, is.
- 51:45You know, Pattinson brings it up.
- 51:47His character brings it up.
- 51:50It's a uniquely American problem.
- 51:52No, it's not like bullying didn't exist
- 51:54except for the last, you know, since Columbine,
- 51:56it doesn't only exist in the United States of America,
- 51:59but the United States of America is the only place where you constantly
- 52:02have school fucking shootings.
- 52:04So, yeah, what's going on?
- 52:07What's the difference? Yeah.
- 52:08What's the I mean, the difference is obvious and stupid
- 52:10and people will never people who on the other side will never,
- 52:14you know, come up to that realization
- 52:18because they don't want to
- 52:21But that's also, you know, the biggest thing like this
- 52:25isn't a uniquely American problem in bullying.
- 52:29It isn't even like this generation.
- 52:32It's, it's a it's been a forever thing for kids.
- 52:36But it's harder nowadays with social media it's easier.
- 52:40It's a lot easier to do it and it's constant.
- 52:44There's no like
- 52:45and then you get a break from it when you go home, like it doesn't fucking stop.
- 52:50It's endless. Yeah.
- 52:52And then you have the easy access to
- 52:56a violent end.
- 52:58Yeah.
- 53:00It's a yeah, it's a cocktail.
- 53:02It's a cocktail for.
- 53:03Yeah. Awful things to happen.
- 53:06That's so cool.
- 53:08What a way to end the conversation.
- 53:10But, yeah, I mean, there's no, there's no, I think the the happiness or the happy,
- 53:15the happy ending of the film is you've got, a couple that seems to now
- 53:20finally understand each other is okay being more vulnerable with each other.
- 53:25Yeah. And. Yeah. Yeah.
- 53:27Like if, if she, if he can,
- 53:31if she can find it to move.
- 53:32On from the experience that happens that we witnessed at the wedding.
- 53:36Then she will the cheating prior to the wedding with the coworker or the.
- 53:40Yeah. The then the, yeah.
- 53:42The awful speeches and even like, this
- 53:45falling apart, of of that.
- 53:49Yeah. She can.
- 53:51How the speech like deteriorates into all the notes.
- 53:54That Mike.
- 53:55Mike told him in the opening like, don't, don't
- 53:59take that out.
- 54:00Like everything that he was told in the beginning to get out again.
- 54:04Mike seems, Mike seems good. Yeah.
- 54:07Mike seems like a good source said that Charlie needs, in his life.
- 54:12I wonder going forward if he has it.
- 54:14I tell you, I wouldn't be surprised
- 54:16if Rachel and Mike were divorced within a month of the end of that song.
- 54:20I could see that happening.
- 54:22It's funny, because I.
- 54:24Can see Mike being like, I'm going to support them and her being like, you're.
- 54:28Fucking ass.
- 54:29But at the same time, if if it's very quick editing, I'm almost positive.
- 54:35I see that. You see Rachel
- 54:39trying to physically a cost the.
- 54:42Boyfriend who headbutts, Robert.
- 54:44Pattinson. Yeah. Then she starts to so.
- 54:47I wonder if, like, if she had a mental slip
- 54:50that we don't get to really experience where she was like.
- 54:54It's like a tribalism. Like, no. Yeah.
- 54:57It's like now I can.
- 54:58The thing is, the violence is against him.
- 55:02Yeah. And I think that.
- 55:03If it was on her, if it was on Emma, she wouldn't give a shit.
- 55:07But again, it feeds into my thing of like,
- 55:09there's more in her mind towards Charlie.
- 55:13That. Maybe she's even willing to. Admit.
- 55:16Because, yeah, she slips immediately and it's like.
- 55:18I'll fucking kill you.
- 55:20Like I remember, you know, or, you know, something that would.
- 55:22Yeah, yeah.
- 55:23I brought you, Just to wrap.
- 55:25I know we got to wrap up, but, like, I was telling Melissa about this movie.
- 55:29My wife, and she.
- 55:31She reminded me.
- 55:31She was like, oh, it's like that line that you really like in 12 Angry Men,
- 55:34you know that that sequence.
- 55:36Where he beats.
- 55:39One of
- 55:39the other jurors into saying, I'll kill you.
- 55:43And Henry Fonda says, you don't really mean you'll kill me.
- 55:46They'll do you,
- 55:48because that's sometimes just the thing people say.
- 55:50Yeah, yeah, it's it's good.
- 55:53It's a great movie to watch.
- 55:55And then sit down and talk about it for like two fucking hours, because,
- 55:59yeah, it's it's got a lot to say. And,
- 56:02And there's so many I mean, the school shooter,
- 56:04the mass shooter aspect takes over the conversation.
- 56:08But there, there's these other little, you know, deeper.
- 56:11Yeah.
- 56:11Subplots of how well do you know your partner, how vulnerable
- 56:15are you willing to be with your partner?
- 56:16How do your friendships, affect your your partnership?
- 56:20Yeah.
- 56:21So there's a there is a whole, you know, subplot of the relationship there.
- 56:27Yeah.
- 56:27That I think also just a rewatch of because the edits are so quick.
- 56:31They're, they're so quick of the flashes of these things.
- 56:36Yeah.
- 56:36It's just this thing, the ring or the rings, the poster that.
- 56:41Yeah, yeah, in the poster, it's it's her holding up her.
- 56:45Hand, you know, as you know.
- 56:48Yeah. It's right on his, his chest. Yeah.
- 56:50Showing the ring off.
- 56:52But when you see that image in the movie,
- 56:55she's pointing at him with the finger gun symbol.
- 56:59So. Okay, so I didn't catch it on the fridge.
- 57:02The picture on it's. On the fridge. Yeah.
- 57:04So I didn't catch that. Really.
- 57:08But.
- 57:09So, Ryan, my husband brought it to my attention.
- 57:12He's like, I think it changes, like from the poster to the the photo,
- 57:17and then I, I questioned, then I was like, but I didn't, I didn't notice that.
- 57:21Does it change at some point with his?
- 57:23I don't think it changes. I just. Perception.
- 57:25I think it's that they.
- 57:27The poster is one thing.
- 57:29And then when you see that image in the film, it's a different image.
- 57:33Although I will argue, I think you could have put out that poster.
- 57:37With the image of that, and no one would have batted an eyelash.
- 57:41And then when the
- 57:42movie came out, you would have been like, Jesus Christ.
- 57:45Yeah, you know, it's an interesting. Choice.
- 57:48I remember when,
- 57:52What was the second film?
- 57:54It was the sequel, the.
- 57:55Unknown sequel to unbreakable at the time when it came out.
- 58:00The my channel
- 58:03on, the second film, Split Glass.
- 58:06Okay.
- 58:06Split, as I want to say, shatter.
- 58:10There was an
- 58:13a hidden in plain sight.
- 58:15Tell that that was a sequel.
- 58:17To. Unbreakable.
- 58:19And it was.
- 58:19If you took the two.
- 58:21Theatrical posters and put them next.
- 58:22To each other, the Shattering Glass met
- 58:27in the middle.
- 58:28You could put them next to each other and the glass that was broken. On.
- 58:32The one half of the original unbreakable poster.
- 58:35That expands.
- 58:37Line to line in the in the other poster.
- 58:40For split and you didn't know it.
- 58:43You could have put it together if.
- 58:45You would have, like, thought of it, you would have never thought of it.
- 58:48And I yeah, I wonder what the decision was
- 58:53to change the poster.
- 58:54Is it is it to have this moment afterwards to be like, oh wow, look at that.
- 58:59Or was A24 really.
- 59:01Fucking terrified of promoting this movie for what it was?
- 59:06I, I hate to be like, it's a marketing thing.
- 59:10It's a marketing thing.
- 59:11You've got two big names.
- 59:13Zendaya, especially.
- 59:16You want the butts in the seats before the the conversation you know, you need.
- 59:22I do think it might be a get them get them to the theater.
- 59:26Do you think it's
- 59:29what's your reaction then to.
- 59:30Like, if someone watched this and they're, like,
- 59:33deceived, they feel a little deceived.
- 59:35Like they needed a trigger warning.
- 59:38Or they were just straight up sold a bag of goods that wasn't the movies
- 59:41they were going to see. It was. Yeah.
- 59:43But I don't think the trailers.
- 59:46Here's the thing.
- 59:46Watching the trailers, I did
- 59:47seem like it was going to be some kind of psychological.
- 59:51Something seems off.
- 59:53Dark. Yeah, where you're like, oh, this isn't.
- 59:55Just going to be funny.
- 59:56Like there's going to be something that happens, you know.
- 59:59At the very least, Robert.
- 1:00:01Pattinson is going to discover that he's actually gay, you know, and then like, and
- 1:00:04break off the wedding at the end or something like that.
- 1:00:06Yeah.
- 1:00:07Because I yeah, we're getting I mean, maybe if you don't have
- 1:00:12like a higher media literacy, you're just seeing an awkward couple.
- 1:00:16Because I guess you could take it as a this is a really uncomfortable
- 1:00:19couple because, like, I think, like, the photo shoot is in the.
- 1:00:22Trailer where, like.
- 1:00:24But then we learned, you know,
- 1:00:25after the trailer that it's really like they're doing this photoshoot
- 1:00:28after the night of the reveal and he's having all these crazy.
- 1:00:32So it's about it. So it does like it.
- 1:00:35That moment that was hilarious to, which is the photographer,
- 1:00:39like basically gives up on obviously we know what it's going to be good.
- 1:00:43So we'll catch it, we'll go to deal. With it.
- 1:00:46And you get, you get the. The the early,
- 1:00:51the foreshadow that
- 1:00:52like he may sway very quickly
- 1:00:56to someone else in an act of desperation, because he can't smile.
- 1:01:00But then he looks at the, the blond is working of destiny,
- 1:01:04and just for a hot second, he, like, has a genuine smile
- 1:01:08because he's just desperate to find, like, normalcy
- 1:01:11like that normal relationship again somewhere.
- 1:01:14But yes, I don't know,
- 1:01:15maybe people I honestly, I didn't read a whole lot of did this.
- 1:01:18I'm not I'm not going to.
- 1:01:20Yeah. Like I don't know if it matters to me.
- 1:01:23I think it maybe I guess you,
- 1:01:26but I this is where I'm going to sound so old.
- 1:01:29And you know, it's like it's like a cancel
- 1:01:32kind of comment for an old person to say,
- 1:01:36I don't
- 1:01:37really, truly believe in trigger warnings.
- 1:01:40Like, there are some movies that like, I'll mention one that I had,
- 1:01:45like a panic attack afterwards, but, like,
- 1:01:47I don't know how you would give it a trigger warning as, like Aftersun.
- 1:01:50I had like a panic attack after watching Aftersun with Pascal.
- 1:01:55Yeah.
- 1:01:56That movie was a little too close to comfort.
- 1:01:59Yeah.
- 1:02:00Yeah, but I don't think, you know, I don't think I would put a trigger
- 1:02:03warning on it, but, So I don't know if you know that.
- 1:02:07That's the thing. I don't know. That's a generational thing.
- 1:02:10Yeah, yeah, it's a generation like in an old person because.
- 1:02:14Yeah, because. I, I don't have that either.
- 1:02:16It's like if I watch something that's upsetting, it's okay.
- 1:02:19Yeah, I'm okay with.
- 1:02:20Watching something that actually upsets me.
- 1:02:24But I
- 1:02:25understand that people are not like that.
- 1:02:28Yeah.
- 1:02:30Yeah. Funny.
- 1:02:32So like, yeah, I don't, I don't know, maybe it would be beneficial
- 1:02:35for people when they went in to know this plot point.
- 1:02:39I don't, I don't think that the marketing is trying to fool you.
- 1:02:41I do think that, I mean,
- 1:02:43it is at the beginning of the movie, it does set up the inciting incident.
- 1:02:47I yeah, I was okay.
- 1:02:48Though, that it was I, I'm happy that the.
- 1:02:52Point is the point is the characters don't know.
- 1:02:56Yeah. So you're not supposed. To know.
- 1:02:57You're in their seats.
- 1:02:58You need to have the reaction that they're going to have
- 1:03:01or your own reaction to this information reveal.
- 1:03:04So I, I appreciate that it was, you know,
- 1:03:07I didn't catch the spoiler before we, we went in, I didn't either.
- 1:03:10Yeah. No.
- 1:03:11So it's funny, this is just go ahead.
- 1:03:14No, no, no, I was just, you know, the point that
- 1:03:19if you know it beforehand, you're going to make your.
- 1:03:21Own determinations and then bring that in there with you.
- 1:03:24Yeah.
- 1:03:24And it's been proven true because that's what I,
- 1:03:27you know, that's what people are going to do.
- 1:03:29Oh, well, this is unforgivable.
- 1:03:31And it this person's terrible person.
- 1:03:32That's an end of the movie.
- 1:03:35You know, that's.
- 1:03:35Not the point of storytelling, right?
- 1:03:37Like we the brilliance of, of of a film is you can show different perspectives.
- 1:03:42You can.
- 1:03:43Also it also. Proves at the movies. Right.
- 1:03:46It's it's the reaction is that it solidifies that.
- 1:03:49The movie is 100% fucking accurate.
- 1:03:52It nailed it.
- 1:03:53Yeah.
- 1:03:53I, you know, you kind of you proved the thesis of the film before you even saw.
- 1:03:59It, right?
- 1:04:00Because you were told something and you said, I never, man,
- 1:04:03I don't need to know anything else because that's crazy.
- 1:04:05This person's insane. How could you ever back them up?
- 1:04:08Ta-Da!
- 1:04:09That's not. Done. Yeah.
- 1:04:12Funny.
- 1:04:13This is just, I guess I know before we, I know I said I think we.
- 1:04:16Okay, we'll wrap this up half hour ago, but,
- 1:04:19the funny side note of Pattinson being in another film
- 1:04:24that people have like strong reactions to the non
- 1:04:29to reveal with this. Yes.
- 1:04:33Okay. But that. One.
- 1:04:34Remember me remember. Me. Yeah that is like.
- 1:04:38And so I guess for people I feel I'm sure but not really.
- 1:04:42I don't feel bad about it specifically because I don't think it's a great movie.
- 1:04:45I don't think it needs to be watched. But.
- 1:04:48That's also it doesn't.
- 1:04:50It's a totally. Different thing because it's.
- 1:04:51It's just it's throw it in.
- 1:04:53Just me stalling at the end.
- 1:04:54It's a left sealed saying and yeah, it's
- 1:04:59it is one of the, fucking.
- 1:05:02Craziest decisions I've ever seen in a movie.
- 1:05:05And especially in that moment in time.
- 1:05:08Okay, so here's a look at what happened when I watched this movie.
- 1:05:13So I watched this
- 1:05:14movie after it came out on DVD.
- 1:05:17I guess, like,
- 1:05:17I guess the normal amount when it was like six months after three months
- 1:05:21after what you could get on like Redbox or in college.
- 1:05:25And we watched it with all of the floor, like the my floor and my dorms.
- 1:05:30And so like there was like ten of us.
- 1:05:32Did you not?
- 1:05:33No, no, none of us knew except for except for one person.
- 1:05:37One person had seen it before.
- 1:05:39It was like, let's watch this behind me.
- 1:05:42Oh, that person's great.
- 1:05:43To not tell anything.
- 1:05:45The moment happens.
- 1:05:46Where? Yeah, he hit the building.
- 1:05:49It's hit by the play in the 911.
- 1:05:52But they don't show it. They don't show.
- 1:05:53They don't show. It.
- 1:05:54Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:55But it's implied that he said he dies in 911.
- 1:05:59Or is it. Yeah.
- 1:06:00Oh yeah. No. Because he's way up.
- 1:06:02Yeah. Yeah. Building like. Right.
- 1:06:03He's not getting out of there. Yeah.
- 1:06:05And so we finish the film.
- 1:06:09And then this I guess is kind
- 1:06:11of like proving the point of like this, like how.
- 1:06:14Triggering things can be.
- 1:06:17And I don't blame her because it was like, not,
- 1:06:19I mean, yeah, 911 I guess was like ten years before that.
- 1:06:23But I would still argue, like for New Yorkers, it's still really ever present.
- 1:06:28It's just that's the way it is.
- 1:06:31And one of our, our floor
- 1:06:34mates lost it, like, angry,
- 1:06:37like raging that they would throw this in,
- 1:06:41that it's not, drama point that, you know, and it's totally understandable.
- 1:06:46Like. Yeah.
- 1:06:46Because it has nothing to do with the rest of the movie.
- 1:06:49Yeah.
- 1:06:50There's nothing heavy shit that you're not, you.
- 1:06:52Know, and I would argue that we haven't we still haven't really reconciled.
- 1:06:57As a country with what happened in 911.
- 1:07:00We still have no way to properly talk about it.
- 1:07:04So yeah, but that was my experience with it.
- 1:07:08And I just remember being like, silently
- 1:07:11being like, I, I've got nothing to add to this conversation.
- 1:07:15Yeah.
- 1:07:15And it was and it was just.
- 1:07:16A hard core argument to.
- 1:07:19For anyone who has seen.
- 1:07:20The film already and, and the floor mate
- 1:07:23who was like livid that that this happened.
- 1:07:27Just to.
- 1:07:28Just to if you haven't seen the film and you're listening.
- 1:07:31It's a movie.
- 1:07:32About like, you know, a guy,
- 1:07:33young man who won't, like, just take the job working for his father,
- 1:07:37and he's trying to make his own way in this, that it's a lot of stuff happens.
- 1:07:41Ultimately, he gets a job.
- 1:07:44And he's at the office of the job.
- 1:07:47And then the camera, as he's staring out the.
- 1:07:49Window, the camera backs up and I want to see he's in tower
- 1:07:52two of the world trade.
- 1:07:56And if I remember.
- 1:07:57Correctly, you hear a plane
- 1:08:00and then it goes.
- 1:08:01Black. And that's the end of the film.
- 1:08:04So the idea is like his first day on this
- 1:08:08new job is on September 11th.
- 1:08:122001, which I think is slightly hinted at
- 1:08:16when you hear dates earlier in the film or something like that,
- 1:08:21but it has no other.
- 1:08:25Tom Ryan like that.
- 1:08:27Like it's just it's just this crazy fucking thing to throw in at the end,
- 1:08:33you know?
- 1:08:34And then that's how it is.
- 1:08:35Like, that's how it ends.
- 1:08:37It's just a cut to black.
- 1:08:39And that's the end of the film.
- 1:08:42Out of nowhere.
- 1:08:44It's nothing to be discussed.
- 1:08:45It has no, like, take on this or like it.
- 1:08:48Nothing. It's just. What?
- 1:08:50How does that. Shock.
- 1:08:51Story. It's just a crazy ending.
- 1:08:54Yeah.
- 1:08:55But so I just I had. Very, very.
- 1:08:57I had I thought that was slightly funny that Pattinson is yet and another.
- 1:09:03I remember.
- 1:09:03When that came out and that happened
- 1:09:07and that news got to me before
- 1:09:09I saw the movie and
- 1:09:13I just remember people being like, you will not fuck you.
- 1:09:16Could I, could you give me a thousand guesses
- 1:09:19and you are not going to get what happened.
- 1:09:22In okay movie. Yeah.
- 1:09:24And there's the difference, right?
- 1:09:25Like there's a difference between this one.
- 1:09:27I would say, like,
- 1:09:28I don't think the marketing is leading you to believe that this is a rom com.
- 1:09:32You know, and whereas like.
- 1:09:35Remember Me is.
- 1:09:36Sold and for the most part until the very end is a romance movie.
- 1:09:42It is a romantic movie like
- 1:09:46so that's where like
- 1:09:47I say, this is a yeah, but anyway, it's.
- 1:09:51Very, very weird.
- 1:09:52The experience that that thing was when I, when that came out
- 1:09:57and at the time that it came out because it was still like,
- 1:09:59you know, sort of fresh in everyone's mind.
- 1:10:02Yeah. And I think that was what was so triggering.
- 1:10:05But that was like the.
- 1:10:06I probably the first like, should there be a trigger.
- 1:10:09Warning, Debate that I heard you know, like when we were starting to like.
- 1:10:13Because my roommate and my floor mate were like, going at it
- 1:10:18a debate for like an hour whether there should have been a trigger.
- 1:10:22There should have been something that alerted you to this.
- 1:10:26But anyway, yeah, I, I thinking back, I would like to rewatch the drama.
- 1:10:31I think coming out of it I was like,
- 1:10:34do I want to rewatch it?
- 1:10:36But I think that was maybe.
- 1:10:37Just my like,
- 1:10:39infuriating with the people, the other characters in the film.
- 1:10:44You know?
- 1:10:45Yeah, the, the a lot of character, a lot of character.
- 1:10:47We don't want to just fucking.
- 1:10:50Yeah, I just want to. She's trying to people.
- 1:10:52I just want to be like, how are you.
- 1:10:54Not giving her the her do shit for what she admitted to?
- 1:10:58Like after all of this, but.
- 1:10:59Yeah, well. Yeah, check it out.
- 1:11:02I definitely.
- 1:11:03I mean, I hope you checked it out already before you listen to this conversation,
- 1:11:07but, you know, whichever way you consume, it is fine.
- 1:11:12All right. Cool. Well, thanks.
- 1:11:14Thanks for coming. On to talk about that, Pete.
- 1:11:16And he'll have some, new movies coming up to discuss.
- 1:11:21And I don't know the schedule of the movie releases, but, we try to.
- 1:11:26I know Pete and I always try and get to catch them in theaters.
- 1:11:29Yeah.
- 1:11:30Trying to get to the theaters.
- 1:11:32Yeah, especially like a project.
- 1:11:34Hail Mary. Go, go see that in theaters.
- 1:11:37You're gonna want to experience on a big screen.
- 1:11:39I even regret, it not being, not seeing it on a larger screen.
- 1:11:44I was in, like, a smaller theater for our,
- 1:11:47our local, film society has a nice little,
- 1:11:51membership thing, and they have a good theater,
- 1:11:54great projector, everything that was just a little bit a smaller theater.
- 1:11:57So I would even recommend, like, if you can go see it in a larger format.
- 1:12:01I think I would also just I mean, even for me, like
- 1:12:05the drama is a great movie to see up on the big screen too,
- 1:12:07because of some of the visuals that you know are in it.
- 1:12:11You know, as you're jumping around, it
- 1:12:14brings you into that space of Pattinson's like,
- 1:12:18dwindling sanity, and just trying to deal with it.
- 1:12:21So yeah, I. Think, yeah.
- 1:12:23Encouraged just and also it's just being able to turn off.
- 1:12:28I think that's I don't know why I'm advocating suddenly for moviegoing or.
- 1:12:32Seeing in theater things, but.
- 1:12:34I think it does.
- 1:12:36It does help. Yeah.
- 1:12:37And but it also just it's a really nice relief to shut off the phone,
- 1:12:42block out the noise. Yeah.
- 1:12:44No dogs, no distractions, just.
- 1:12:47You know, and if you don't own dogs, you probably shouldn't have dogs regularly.
- 1:12:50Also you shouldn't you just shouldn't just have dogs around you.
- 1:12:54Probably a good idea.
- 1:12:56Right? Right.
- 1:12:56You know, and I don't even know whoever's noisy in your life
- 1:12:59is not interrupting you while you're trying to absorb a film.
- 1:13:03Especially the drama.
- 1:13:04Where, like, there's such quick edits that you could miss thing so easily.
- 1:13:08And I don't think that the drama is something that really should be paused.
- 1:13:12I think you kind of need to, like.
- 1:13:13Ride that one through.
- 1:13:15Yeah, sit with that.
- 1:13:17Yeah.
- 1:13:18All right. Cool. Well. Thank you.
- 1:13:19This was so much fun.
- 1:13:22Thanks, everyone. Bye!
- 1:13:26Hey, guys. Ashley here.
- 1:13:27Thanks for listening to Film Curious!
- 1:13:29If you enjoyed this episode, there's plenty more to come.
- 1:13:31I'll be reviewing new theatrical releases and new streaming as much as possible,
- 1:13:35so make sure to subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
- 1:13:37As a follow up to this episode, I think I'm going to do a rewatch of Dream
- 1:13:40Scenario, the director's previous film, because I always find the connections
- 1:13:43between the topics they choose and how they grapple with them adds value
- 1:13:47to understanding their breadth of work.
- 1:13:48Thanks again! See you real soon.
