- 0:00Podcasthero.com. Welcome to The Daily Quote, a
- 0:05podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Andrew Mcgibbon for October 23rd.
- 0:13Today is National Mole Day and no, we're not talking about the
- 0:17small burrowing mammals or that delicious Mexican sauce or the
- 0:21little brown or black marks on your body.
- 0:24We're celebrating chemistry. Observed annually on October
- 0:2823rd from six O 2:00 AM to 6:00 O 2:00 PM Mold Day commemorates
- 0:35avogadro's #6.02 * 10 to the 23rd Power, which is one of the
- 0:43most fundamental measuring units in chemistry.
- 0:47The holiday was inspired by an article in the Science Teacher
- 0:50magazine in the early 80s by educator Margaret Kristoff, who
- 0:55celebrated this special number with her students.
- 0:59In 1991, Maurice Oller, a high school chemistry teacher from
- 1:04Wisconsin, founded the National Mold, a Foundation to officially
- 1:08establish the celebration. Since then, schools throughout
- 1:12the United States and around the world have celebrated with mole
- 1:17themed activities, puns, and chemistry demonstrations.
- 1:22What makes Mold a special is its mission to foster interest in
- 1:26chemistry through fun and creativity.
- 1:29It transforms what could be intimidating scientific concepts
- 1:33into something accessible and enjoyable, reminding us that
- 1:37science can be both serious and playful.
- 1:41And that brings us to today's quote from scientist Murray
- 1:45Curry, who once said nothing in life is to be feared.
- 1:51It is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand
- 1:56more so that we may fear less. Curry's wisdom captures exactly
- 2:02what Moldy celebrates. Avogadro's number and the mole
- 2:07concept can seem intimidating at first.
- 2:10After all, 6.02 * 10 to the 23rd, it's almost
- 2:15incomprehensibly large. But once you understand what it
- 2:19means and how it works, it becomes a powerful tool that
- 2:23makes chemistry comprehensible and practical.
- 2:26Think about what Curry is really saying.
- 2:29Fear comes from ignorance, while understanding brings
- 2:33empowerment. This applies not just to
- 2:35chemistry, but to everything in life.
- 2:38When we take the time to understand complex concepts,
- 2:42whether it's Avogadro's number, financial planning, or difficult
- 2:45relationships, they become less scary and more manageable.
- 2:50Mole Day embodies Curry's philosophy by making chemistry
- 2:53accessible through mole themed activities, puns and
- 2:57celebrations. It removes the fear that often
- 3:00surrounds scientific subjects. Teachers bake mole shaped
- 3:03cookies, students create mole puns, and everyone has fun while
- 3:09learning fundamental chemistry concepts.
- 3:12Fear dissolves when understanding increases.
- 3:16Curry herself faced enormous challenges and prejudices as a
- 3:20woman in science, yet she persevered through
- 3:23understanding, not fear. She won 2 Nobel Prizes by
- 3:29pursuing knowledge with curiosity rather than
- 3:31intimidation. As you head into your day,
- 3:36embrace Curry's wisdom and the spirit of Moldy.
- 3:40What in your life seems scary or intimidating simply because you
- 3:43don't understand it yet? What would change if you
- 3:47approached it with curiosity instead of fear?
- 3:51Maybe it's learning about a subject that intimidates you.
- 3:55Maybe it's asking questions about something you've been too
- 3:57embarrassed to admit that you don't understand.
- 4:00Maybe it's simply reminding yourself that knowledge is the
- 4:04antidote to fear. If you have kids or no students,
- 4:08share the joy of them all day with them.
- 4:11Tell some terrible mole puns. There are thousands of them
- 4:14online. Explain why this strange number
- 4:18matters. Help them see that science isn't
- 4:21something to fear. It's something to explore with
- 4:24wonder and humor. That's it for today.
- 4:27Thanks for listening. I'm Anna McGovern, signing off
- 4:30for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:34Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
