- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The Propers of the Day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The Vigil of Saints Peter and Paul, June 27 in the year of our Lord 2026. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen.
- 0:29A note on the rubrics.
- 0:32Before 1955, certain feasts had common vigils with masses proper to them. These feast days were penitential days And at mass, the priest wore violet, and there was neither Gloria nor Credo said. If the feast itself was of sufficient rank and fell on a Sunday, celebration of the feast was transferred to Monday. If any feast had a common vigil that fell on Sunday, the vigil mass was anticipated on the preceding Saturday. This practice of transferring or anticipating feasts was removed in 1955 and many of the vigil masses were suppressed.
- 1:22By 1962, almost all of the common vigils were removed. Among those that survived was the vigil of saints Peter and Paul. With the implementation of a new calendar for the Novus Ordo, none of the common vigils survived. The entire system of traditional penitential vigil days was abolished.
- 1:51The Introit The Lord said to Peter, When you were younger, didst gird yourself, and didst walk o'er you would.
- 2:03But when you shall be old, you shall stretch forth your hands, and another shall gird thee, and lead thee whither thou wouldst not. And this he said, signifying by what death he should glorify God. The heavens show forth the glory of God and the firmament declares the works of his hands. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 2:47The Lord said to Peter, When you were younger, didst gird yourself, and didst walk o'er you would. But when you shall be old, you shall stretch forth your hands, and another shall gird thee, and lead thee whither thou wouldst not. And this he said, signifying by what death he should glorify God. The Collect, let us pray. We beseech thee, oh, almighty God, that thou suffer no disturbance to shake us, whom thou hast founded on the rock of the confession of thine apostles.
- 3:37A commemoration of the octave of Saint John the Baptist. O God, who has made this day honorable to us on account of the birth of blessed John. Grant to thy people the grace of spiritual joys and direct the minds of all the faithful into the way of eternal salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the acts of the apostles.
- 4:23In those days, Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, which is an hour of prayer when a man was carried by who had been lame from birth. Every day he was put down at what is called the beautiful gate of the temple so that he could beg alms from the temple visitors. And he asked Peter and John as he saw them on their way into the temple if he might have alms from them. Peter fastened his eyes on him as John did too and said, turn towards us. And he looked at them attentively hoping that something would be given him.
- 5:15Then Peter said to him, Silver and gold are not mine to give. I give thee what I can. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk. So taking him by his right hand, he lifted him up. And with that, strength came to his feet and ankles.
- 5:44He sprang up and began walking and went into the temple with them, walking and leaping and giving praise to God. All the people as they saw him walking and praising God recognized him for the man who used to sit begging at the beautiful gate of the temple and were full of wonder and bewilderment at what had befallen him. The gradual. Their sound went forth into all the earth and their words to the ends of the world. The heavens show forth the glory of God and the firmament declareth the works of his hands.
- 6:36A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John. At that time, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, dost thou care for me more than these others? Yes, Lord, he told him. Thou knowest well that I love thee. And he said to him, feed my lambs.
- 7:08And again a second time he asked him, Simon, son of John, dost thou care for me? Yes, Lord, he told him. Thou knowest well that I love thee. He said to him, tend my shearlings. Then he asked him a third question.
- 7:37Simon, son of John, dost thou love me? Peter was deeply moved when he was asked a third time, dost thou love me? And said to him, Lord, thou knowest all things. Thou canst tell that I love thee. Jesus said to him, feed my sheep.
- 8:08Believe me when I tell thee this. As a young man, thou wouldst gird thyself, and walk where thou hast the will to go. But when thou hast grown old, thou wilt stretch out thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee where thou goest, not of thy own will. So much he told him, prophesying the death by which he was to glorify God. And with that, he said to him, follow me.
- 8:48The offertory. Great reverence have I for thy friends, o God. Sovereign power is theirs in abundance. The secret. Sanctify, we beseech thee, O Lord, the offering of thy people by the intercession of thine apostles, and cleanse us from the stains of our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 9:30Amen. A commemoration of the octave of Saint John the Baptist. We heap our gifts upon thine altars, O Lord, as we celebrate with due honor the nativity of him who prophesied the coming and made known the presence of the world savior. Jesus Christ, thy son, our Lord, who is god living and reigning with thee in the unity of the holy ghost through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 10:09The common preface, just it is indeed and fitting right in for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, oh, holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, Through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord.
