- 2:03supporting dubby today. The year was 1859 and Mining had
- 2:16began to decline along the western slope of the Sierra,
- 2:19Nevada. Prospectors in search of riches
- 2:23beyond their Wildest Dreams began to cross the Eastern
- 2:27Slope. One, such man was named William
- 2:31S Bode, during his expedition Bode would find gold near a
- 2:35place now known as Bodie Bluff, he would make Camp there and
- 2:40continue to take his chances in order to collect his riches his
- 2:45supplies and food with gross scarce but his stash of gold
- 2:49nuggets was growing ever larger. Powered by his insatiable love
- 2:54for a better life. Bodie continued on, however, as
- 2:59the year progressed and winter came over the area, he
- 3:03unfortunately, would Breathe his last breath, Bodie died in a
- 3:08snowstorm that very winter and would later be discovered by the
- 3:12future inhabitants of the town that would come to bear his
- 3:15name. His story in its own way, would
- 3:18manifest within the settlement, even down to its last days.
- 3:24As the search for gold continued bodis gold vein would be
- 3:28rediscovered in slowly, but surely a mine was established as
- 3:33well as a mill. The year was now 1861 and the
- 3:37town known as Bodie, was home to 20 minors for the next 17 years
- 3:43to come. It's population would grow
- 3:46steadily, but it would remain a rather insignificant mining
- 3:49camp. And that was until the mill was
- 3:52sold. Bunker Hill.
- 3:55Mine. As it came to be known on the
- 3:57west slope of bode. Bluff would change hands several
- 4:00times within the 17 years until it came into the possession of
- 4:05standard Mining Company. It was originally sold because
- 4:09the owners of Bunker Hill mine at the time believed that the
- 4:12well had run dry. So to speak since their profits
- 4:16and gold Discovery had been on a downward trajectory for many
- 4:20years, but after it was sold to standard Was if a miracle had
- 4:25taken place just months after the sale as significant vein of
- 4:30Rich gold or was discovered profits, as a result Rose
- 4:35dramatically. And by 1878 bodis population had
- 4:40soared to over 5,000 people. It's estimated that the mine
- 4:45would yield nearly 15 million dollars worth of gold over the
- 4:48next 25 years profits that would be worth an estimated 400
- 4:53million dollars in today's money, although all seemed to be
- 4:58going, great and Bodie. There were many hardships yet in
- 5:01store for the fledgling town and its citizens, the winter of 78
- 5:07was particularly Savage, it's estimated that over 200, people
- 5:12would lose their lives, either due to exposure hypothermia or
- 5:18disease. Others would be taken by Fallen
- 5:22Timber and one of several explosions to take place within
- 5:26the mines as the Powder Magazine mysteriously ignited.
- 5:33But despite the horror of the winter frost Bode continued to
- 5:37grow people, of almost, every Walk of Life, would end up there
- 5:42from minors to Gamblers prostitutes and businessmen.
- 5:49And by 1879, it had doubled in size to over 10,000 residents,
- 5:55it had added an additional 2,000 buildings and before long, it's
- 6:00supported over 30 gold mines, 65 saloons, and untold amounts of
- 6:06brothels gambling halls and opium dens.
- 6:10Opposite, the brothels gambling and opium smoking.
- 6:15The town also had several churches banks in schools, three
- 6:21breweries within the town Work Day and Night Brewing, whiskey
- 6:24and 100 gallon barrels because Bode seem to have an insatiable
- 6:29thirst for alcohol. Like a perfect storm Bodie would
- 6:34soon earned. A reputation for violence
- 6:36lawlessness and debauchery of every kind killings at times
- 6:42were daily events, robberies stick ups.
- 6:47And street fights all became frequent occurrences, as well.
- 6:51As the town seemed to turn its back on God and worship.
- 6:54Its Newfound Idol one of gold and profit.
- 7:00It seemed like the good times for those who indulge themselves
- 7:04would never end. But they would.
- 7:08Given bodis reputation. It's perhaps not surprising.
- 7:12That one. Little girl, whose family was
- 7:14moving to the mining town. Reportedly prayed, goodbye, God.
- 7:20We are going to bode. For all of its construction
- 7:25Bodie needed vast amounts of lumber.
- 7:28And the problem was that there were scarce trees in the area.
- 7:32Soon, several businessmen, formed the Bodie and Benton
- 7:36Railroad Company in 1881 for the sole purpose of sustaining that
- 7:41appetite for much-needed. Lumber, however, for the
- 7:45citizens of Bodie, this was not a good decision in order to
- 7:49maximize profits, the company hired an Chinese labor, much to
- 7:55the outrage of the locally unemployed so with a large
- 7:59influx of cheap foreign labor and soon.
- 8:02Help Drive the competing labor costs into the ground.
- 8:06Not just for the railroad but for mining as well.
- 8:11This marked the beginning of the end of the town.
- 8:14The boom was over. Just one year later in 1882,
- 8:18Bodhi started to rapidly decline.
- 8:22Prior to 1882, there were no churches within the town but
- 8:26there were two preachers. One Methodist and one Catholic
- 8:31who held services in their private homes and despite of the
- 8:35town's decline to churches would be built in 1882 one for each of
- 8:41the two faiths. However, both would not end up
- 8:45surviving. After the merging of Bodie and
- 8:49the standard mining companies in 1887, the town saw a brief
- 8:54Revival in both wealth as well as population but that too would
- 8:59be short-lived. A series of fires would soon
- 9:02extinguish Bode for good. In 1892, a fire ravaged, much of
- 9:09the business district further depleting the population and in
- 9:131898, a massive fire broke out and destroyed the once
- 9:18prosperous Mill. And although it was a slow burn
- 9:23metaphorically speaking. As far as the decline of the
- 9:26town, the final nail in the coffin was in 1932 when a
- 9:32two-year-old boy who had gotten ahold of his father's matches
- 9:35ended up lighting a fire that would destroy 95% of all
- 9:40buildings left within the town. In the years to come prohibition
- 9:46and the Great Depression would in tune Bodhi and although
- 9:49attempts were made to strike new gold companies once record
- 9:53profits crashed. We are thus left with a tale of
- 9:58a city that flew too close to the Sun and burned showing that
- 10:04chasing profit and vanity debauchery and lust yield a
- 10:08disastrous long-term consequences.
- 10:12After WWII, only six people lived in the old settlement and
- 10:17five of these six would soon. Meet strange and untimely
- 10:21deaths. The first was a man who
- 10:25seemingly went mad out of the Clear Blue Sky.
- 10:29He woke up one day, loaded his pistol and shot.
- 10:33His wife in broad daylight in the Town Centre.
- 10:37Three men witnessed this take place and quickly took action,
- 10:41which would lead to the death of the man who had just killed his
- 10:44wife. And this is where things take a
- 10:47very weird turn. Indeed.
- 10:50According to each man, the ghost of the murdered man.
- 10:53Would visit them individually. Tormenting them and forbidding
- 10:58their rest soon. All three would die of a
- 11:02mysterious and painful disease. Details on their condition are
- 11:07scarce but thick and painful boils were said to envelop them
- 11:13within a matter of agonizing weeks, they would all perish.
- 11:19But the strange happenings didn't seem to stop with just
- 11:22those three men after this Bode, truly became a ghost town by
- 11:281962, after years of neglect, it was designated as State
- 11:33Historical Park by the state of California.
- 11:37Legends about this place. Seemingly stuck in time one,
- 11:42such Legend is known as the Bode curse.
- 11:45Supposedly if visitors take anything from from this town,
- 11:49even a pebble, they will forever.
- 11:52Be cursed with terrible misfortune.
- 11:55One such victim claimed to have been struck with horrible luck
- 11:59and tragedy until they returned an item that they had stolen
- 12:03from a previous visit and this is an entirely speculation or
- 12:07Superstition. However, the park zone Rangers
- 12:11claim, it's a real phenomenon years ago.
- 12:14They began to keep a log of anyone who would offer to tell
- 12:17them that they were. Sing something from Bode and the
- 12:21log book also contains Pages upon pages of those.
- 12:24Same people returning those items and claiming the notorious
- 12:29curse. The curse is said to be
- 12:32perpetuated by the ghost that lived there, who guard their
- 12:35riches against thieves, as they are, still searching for new
- 12:39gold. And despite the park rangers
- 12:42vouching for the happenings many believe, it's nothing more than
- 12:46silly Superstition but I for one wouldn't want to be the guy to
- 12:50test this out. There are many places I'd be
- 12:53willing to go to investigate with Bodhi, being one of them.
- 12:58But why take the chance of destroying your life for
- 13:00something that wasn't yours to begin with.
- 13:04Another ghostly Legend, is that of the haunting of the Jays Kane
- 13:08house at the corner of green? And parched streets.
- 13:13James Stewart cane or JS Cain had arrived in Bodie.
- 13:17When he was just 25 years old soon after his arrival, he
- 13:22entered the lumber transporting business and soon became a mogul
- 13:28He would go on to own the Bodhi Bank, a leasing company and
- 13:32became the primary property owner within the town.
- 13:36The home is said to be haunted by the Restless Spirit of a
- 13:39chinese-made the made, apparently loves children who
- 13:43visited but hates adults. Adults sleeping in the old house
- 13:48of said to be awakened, frightened and breathless,
- 13:52feeling the weight of another person.
- 13:55Sitting on their chest. Others have experienced doors,
- 13:59opening, and closing by themselves and have even seen
- 14:03The Apparition of the spirit herself sitting in the chair and
- 14:07the main room. And this isn't the only place
- 14:10that's claimed to be haunted as still stands there.
- 14:14The men duccini house is called home to several friendly,
- 14:17ghosts. One, who is thought to be mrs.
- 14:20Mehta Cheney herself. She loved cooking.
- 14:24Large Italian meals for her family guests, and park rangers
- 14:28alike have reported smelling delicious Aromas emanating from
- 14:32the house. Although no one has cooked there
- 14:35for over 100 years. Others have seen the spirit of a
- 14:40woman peering out of the top window of the dock.
- 14:43Imbue house, almost as if the woman is still alive, but
- 14:48trapped in another time. Still dressed as though it's the
- 14:52early 1900s. And yet another ghost is known
- 14:57as the angel of Bodie and her home is the Bode Cemetery.
- 15:02There is an old angel statue that sits to guard her grave The
- 15:07angel was a three-year-old little girl who was said to have
- 15:10been accidentally killed when she was hit in the head by
- 15:14slipped miners pickaxe. Visitors of her, giggling
- 15:18feeling a small hand tugging on their pant legs.
- 15:22And others have seen a little girl run from Tombstone to
- 15:25tombstone. but upon rushing to finder, There's never anyone.
- 15:31There. Bodie is now in a state of
- 15:34Arrested decay. There are no permanent residents
- 15:38of the town, except the park employees, and only about 10% of
- 15:42the original buildings still stand in this ghost town.
- 15:47There are no Maps. No.
- 15:49Restaurants were re-creations here.
- 15:53You get the real ghost town experience.
- 15:56So if you find yourself in California and feel like taking
- 15:59a walk through time Bodhi just might be the place for you.
- 16:05But just remember, don't take anything.
