- 0:03Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast. The Patriots Training
- 0:11Speaker 1: Camp Cast is your source for all the news from
- 0:13Speaker 1: Patriots Training Camp.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Well, I do still watch the news.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots dot com
- 0:19Speaker 1: have you covered well, I miss yesterday now here to
- 0:22Speaker 1: review today's practice. The writers of Patriots dot com and that.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Would be the entire crew of the writing team of
- 0:29Speaker 2: Patriots dot com, Evan Lazar, Mike Desol, Paul Parola with
- 0:32Speaker 2: you after the in stadium night practice on day nine
- 0:37Speaker 2: here at Jillette Stadium, and I would say the biggest
- 0:40Speaker 2: news of the night was off the field as practice
- 0:43Speaker 2: was getting underway, a report from Adam Schefter. I believe
- 0:47Speaker 2: he was the first to have it about a contract
- 0:50Speaker 2: adjustment for Matthew Judon, so which definitely makes a lot
- 0:54Speaker 2: of sense based on what we saw during camp every
- 0:57Speaker 2: single day with Judon doing very little out there, he
- 1:00Speaker 2: gets a couple extra million in the coffers, which I
- 1:04Speaker 2: think he is, you know, certainly deserving of. After practice,
- 1:08Speaker 2: we got to hear from Jack Jones for the first
- 1:10Speaker 2: time of the summer, So we'll get to that later.
- 1:13Speaker 2: In between I'm gonna let you guys tell everybody what happened.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Well, it was a White vers Blue quasi scrimmage. I mean,
- 1:20Speaker 3: I'm not sure exactly what you would put it in,
- 1:22Speaker 3: yes scrimmage and quotes.
- 1:23Speaker 2: I used quotes in my blogs a number of times
- 1:26Speaker 2: that half scrimmage.
- 1:28Speaker 3: It's kind of just a dry run of a game
- 1:31Speaker 3: without the competition portion of it and just getting used
- 1:34Speaker 3: to the flow of the game. And you know, I
- 1:36Speaker 3: think they threw a couple of situations at them. All right,
- 1:39Speaker 3: that kick was missed, now we're here, you know, those
- 1:40Speaker 3: kind of things. So not a lot to probably take
- 1:43Speaker 3: from the in stadium practice, but a nice cap to
- 1:45Speaker 3: the week. I think six straight days of practices. They're
- 1:47Speaker 3: going to be off tomorrow and get a little break
- 1:50Speaker 3: and then and then you kind of turn the page
- 1:51Speaker 3: to the preseason on Sunday and start getting ready of Panthers.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So on the field, I don't know, not too much
- 1:55Speaker 3: to take away. Maybe the kickers, Evan, what do you got.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Yeah, specialists, I think is always a big one. And
- 1:59Speaker 4: I know it's crazy, but trust me when I tell you,
- 2:02Speaker 4: when you're in the stadium and there's even just a
- 2:04Speaker 4: little bit of stakes of being in front of a crowd,
- 2:07Speaker 4: I'm sure Bill Belichick is keeping tally of a Chad
- 2:10Speaker 4: Ryland versus Nick Folk and the punters and all that.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Bryce Berenger had some boomers tonight, a sixty five yard
- 2:18Speaker 4: punt over five seconds of hangtime and another one earlier
- 2:22Speaker 4: that was over five seconds in hang time. So there's
- 2:24Speaker 4: absolutely no question that that guy can punt the football.
- 2:27Speaker 4: The question really is is consistency, because we've seen some
- 2:30Speaker 4: punts where shanks it a little bit, and then other
- 2:33Speaker 4: punts where he can flip the field like he did tonight.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Chad Ryland did miss from about forty five yards, but
- 2:38Speaker 4: he made his other kicks, and Nick Folk was perfect.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Both of them had a weird false start snap issue
- 2:45Speaker 4: happened to them, so I'm kind of throwing those kicks out.
- 2:49Speaker 4: But I still consistently see a much bigger leg much.
- 2:53Speaker 4: It just looks fresher coming off Chad Ryley.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I don't think this much doubt, but I did think
- 2:57Speaker 2: that it was something to keep an eye on first
- 3:00Speaker 2: time in the stadium. I think Evan's right. I think,
- 3:02Speaker 2: you know, Bill likes that sort of environment to add
- 3:04Speaker 2: a little juice. I thought it was interesting that most
- 3:07Speaker 2: of the kicks came toward the you know, the cloth
- 3:12Speaker 2: the old closed and I was gonna say the close ed,
- 3:13Speaker 2: but now they both closed, you know, away from the
- 3:16Speaker 2: new larger video board. And uh yeah, there was a
- 3:21Speaker 2: couple that Rylan missed. One was definitely thrown off kilter
- 3:25Speaker 2: by the movement up front of the line and whatnot.
- 3:27Speaker 2: But I bring it up only because it gave me
- 3:30Speaker 2: some PTSD to justin Rollwasser. It did low line drive
- 3:34Speaker 2: that was kind of spinning sideways, fell short into the
- 3:37Speaker 2: to the left. Was not good, but I don't think
- 3:40Speaker 2: that was necessarily on him. I agree with Evan that
- 3:42Speaker 2: the leg is definitely stronger than nick Folk, and Folk
- 3:45Speaker 2: was as normal. He made everything.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Yeah, and just you know, I could comment on Jude
- 3:49Speaker 3: on too, because I guess this is kind of the
- 3:51Speaker 3: new normal with the hold ends and this is what
- 3:52Speaker 3: it kind of looks like. You know, I think this
- 3:54Speaker 3: is what you got to keep in mind when you
- 3:56Speaker 3: know guys are going through this. Certainly not everybody, but
- 3:59Speaker 3: there was a lot of speculation of what was going on,
- 4:01Speaker 3: and that is what's going on.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Hold in not getting I think, so, you know, and
- 4:04Speaker 2: again you know, they they're not going to come right
- 4:06Speaker 2: out and admit that. But Stefan Gilmour never did either,
- 4:09Speaker 2: and I would go to my grave thinking that he
- 4:11Speaker 2: did that a couple of years ago as well.
- 4:13Speaker 3: And it's an easy to kind of hide it because
- 4:14Speaker 3: he's such an important player and they don't really have
- 4:16Speaker 3: much depth behind him, so it's easy to kind of
- 4:18Speaker 3: make that leap in your mind, like, well, maybe they're
- 4:19Speaker 3: just protecting him. But it's good news, and I hope
- 4:22Speaker 3: to see Judon out there and involved and getting in
- 4:24Speaker 3: shape and getting ready for the season. But I also
- 4:26Speaker 3: am okay if they continue to manage him a little bit.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Ye, So go ahead.
- 4:29Speaker 3: No.
- 4:29Speaker 4: I just think my line for Judon was the first
- 4:33Speaker 4: joint practice in Green Bay. I didn't really care if
- 4:36Speaker 4: he practices in the practices here, but he's got to
- 4:39Speaker 4: have some sort of competition to get the cobwebs off
- 4:42Speaker 4: at some point. And I think that that that was
- 4:44Speaker 4: back to back weeks. They wanted to get something done.
- 4:46Speaker 4: They maybe even got down a little bit early to
- 4:48Speaker 4: have him practice next week. I think he'll be out
- 4:52Speaker 4: there practicing. But a guy that only Nick Bosa and
- 4:55Speaker 4: Miles Garrett have more sacks than Matthew Judon since he
- 4:58Speaker 4: signed with the Patriots two years go, and I think
- 5:00Speaker 4: you look at that locker room. If they're not going
- 5:03Speaker 4: to take care of Judon, then who are they going
- 5:05Speaker 4: to take care of. I think it's somebody that they
- 5:07Speaker 4: got to make sure, just for locker room morale that
- 5:10Speaker 4: when you're back to back Pro Bowls amongst the leaders
- 5:14Speaker 4: in Zack fifteen and a half sacks last year, you
- 5:16Speaker 4: got to reward some people for that type of effort.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Yeah, let him wet his beak a little bit, as
- 5:20Speaker 2: they say, Mike. So with the Jack Jones situation, he
- 5:24Speaker 2: took a very limited amount of questions at the end
- 5:27Speaker 2: of the practice. I thought he did a good job
- 5:29Speaker 2: of just sort of handling himself. You know, he just
- 5:32Speaker 2: talked about, you know, wants to be on the football field,
- 5:35Speaker 2: and when he's out there, it's all about what he's
- 5:37Speaker 2: supposed to do, when he wants to make sure he's
- 5:39Speaker 2: doing whatever he needs to do for the team. He
- 5:41Speaker 2: was asked about his version of the events that night.
- 5:44Speaker 2: He said that that was a question for his lawyer,
- 5:47Speaker 2: which I think is the absolute right answer from the
- 5:50Speaker 2: player perspective there. And then you know, someone I think
- 5:54Speaker 2: asked him if he was surprised to still be part
- 5:57Speaker 2: of the team or no, sorry, if he expects to
- 6:00Speaker 2: be part of the team in twenty twenty three, and
- 6:02Speaker 2: he said that, well, that's that's going to be up
- 6:04Speaker 2: to code. That's coaches call. And you know, he's again
- 6:09Speaker 2: just doing whatever he's supposed to do to make sure
- 6:11Speaker 2: he's ready to be part of this team. And he
- 6:14Speaker 2: was asked, I know that we was sort of like
- 6:17Speaker 2: a short amount of questions. But he was also asked
- 6:19Speaker 2: about the incident that took place at practice on Thursday,
- 6:23Speaker 2: and he really didn't get into it. Just that's just football, man,
- 6:26Speaker 2: you know, And that was that was big. I thought
- 6:29Speaker 2: he did a nice job. I mean, under the circumstances.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Not an easy situation, right for a young guy in
- 6:35Speaker 2: the crosshairs. He's got to balance the legal elements of
- 6:39Speaker 2: this as well as everything else. I thought he did
- 6:41Speaker 2: a good enough job. And you know, I think you
- 6:43Speaker 2: face the music and maybe you won't have to do
- 6:45Speaker 2: it again for a while. Yeah.
- 6:47Speaker 3: So, I mean still has big questions with him. Is
- 6:48Speaker 3: he going to be available. He's a good player. I
- 6:50Speaker 3: mean I think he can definitely play. He could definitely
- 6:51Speaker 3: help this team. And so it's just disappointing. You know,
- 6:54Speaker 3: we knew what he was dealing with legally, then to
- 6:55Speaker 3: have that event yesterday happen, it's just it's kind of
- 6:58Speaker 3: adding to the uncertainty of Jack Jones. And you know,
- 7:00Speaker 3: he said he didn't know, and I don't know what's
- 7:02Speaker 3: going to happen with him right now. And obviously he's
- 7:04Speaker 3: got legal things coming up in August as well that
- 7:06Speaker 3: could have something to do with it. So I guess
- 7:08Speaker 3: we just kind of wait and see. And you know,
- 7:11Speaker 3: Isaiah Bolden kind of playing a little well, came up
- 7:13Speaker 3: with an interception at the end. I know it doesn't
- 7:14Speaker 3: mean anything, but I think he's just been one guy
- 7:16Speaker 3: who maybe has benefited a little bit from Jack Jones's
- 7:19Speaker 3: reduced reps.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah, some reps, absolutely, Yeah.
- 7:21Speaker 4: I think, you know, just to spin it to football
- 7:23Speaker 4: with Jack Jones, you look at what happens when he's
- 7:26Speaker 4: not out there to that outside cornerback depth, and I
- 7:29Speaker 4: think you are talking about Isaiah Bolden or maybe even
- 7:32Speaker 4: moving Jalen Mills back the corner because they don't have
- 7:34Speaker 4: much size if that's if he's not in there, and
- 7:37Speaker 4: I know he's not the biggest guy, but He's at
- 7:39Speaker 4: least five eleven six foot, so's a little bit bigger
- 7:42Speaker 4: than a Jonathan Jones or Marcus Jones. And those two
- 7:45Speaker 4: guys being on the field a lot with five eight,
- 7:48Speaker 4: five nine corners all over the place, and Miles Bryant's
- 7:51Speaker 4: a smaller guy too. So I look at Isaiah Bolden
- 7:54Speaker 4: and see a much bigger guy, a guy that can
- 7:56Speaker 4: really run four to three speed. He can return kickoffs,
- 7:59Speaker 4: play on special teams. You know, a couple of different
- 8:01Speaker 4: things there that he can do to make himself valuable
- 8:04Speaker 4: as a fifth corner. I thought the best play that
- 8:06Speaker 4: he's had in camp was punching the ball out from
- 8:08Speaker 4: Devonte Parker. I think that was yesterday or the day
- 8:10Speaker 4: before Thursday or Wednesday, and you know, just one of
- 8:13Speaker 4: those late punchouts where Parker looked like he caught it
- 8:16Speaker 4: and then he went to go bring it down and
- 8:17Speaker 4: Bolden punched it out and forced the incompletion. So he's
- 8:21Speaker 4: made some plays. He's played a little bit with the
- 8:24Speaker 4: with the high end twos. I wouldn't call it ones,
- 8:27Speaker 4: but high end twos. And we'll see what happens with
- 8:30Speaker 4: Isaiah Bolden.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and those two guys him and speed a mere
- 8:34Speaker 2: speed great, Uh, you know, projections to special teamers with
- 8:39Speaker 2: their with their just their measurables, uh, and obvious athleticism.
- 8:42Speaker 2: So that's gonna do it for tonight. Uh, Mike, you
- 8:46Speaker 2: put the preview on it. Sunday, they'll be back at it,
- 8:49Speaker 2: uh with practice at one o'clock. It's supposed to be
- 8:51Speaker 2: now Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and that'll put it into the
- 8:55Speaker 2: public portion of training camp. So it's amazing how quickly
- 8:58Speaker 2: these days go. But that's day nine. The books
