Ep. 173. Who is Artie Maddicks in Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:11
Hello I am Megan from vigilante vibes and I am here for another
• 0:14
character breakdown of the underrated mutants of the Marvel
• 0:17
Universe. I just keep going and going and
• 0:20
I'm not sure when I'm going to stop.
• 0:21
So enjoy whatever comes out because there's a lot of
• 0:25
underrated mutants outside of the popular X-Men like Cyclops,
• 0:29
Jean Grey, Wolverine, all of them.
• 0:31
So today, who are we talking about?
• 0:34
We're actually talking about Arthur or Artie Maddox.
• 0:38
Artie Maddox made his first appearance in X Factor Volume 1
• 0:42
#2 in March 1986. He was created by Bob Layton and
• 0:47
Jackson Gucci. Artie Maddox is the son of
• 0:50
Doctor Carl Maddox, a devoted scientist.
• 0:54
After trying to steal a serum from Doctor Henry McCoy, who we
• 0:57
know as Beast, Carl was shot by the Secret Empire.
• 1:02
He survived the attack and started a new life for the son,
• 1:05
Artie. Since Artie's mother had passed
• 1:07
away years earlier, Carl was really all he had.
• 1:12
Carl got a job at Ryan's Labs and everything seemed fine until
• 1:16
Artie's 11th birthday when his mutation kicked in.
• 1:19
Unfortunately, it left him very disfigured and a mute.
• 1:24
Desperate to fix what happened to his son, Carl hired the
• 1:28
Mercenary Tower to kidnap Doctor McCoy, knowing he was the only
• 1:32
one who could help. After Carl hit a dead end, Carl
• 1:36
attempted an experiment to cure mutation, but he all he managed
• 1:40
to do was partially reverse Beast's blue furry form to an
• 1:44
earlier state. Hoping to cover his tracks, Carl
• 1:48
contacted X Factor, completely unaware they were actually
• 1:52
Beast's teammates, and asked them to eliminate Tower.
• 1:56
When X Factor showed up to rescue Beast, the lab security
• 2:00
was triggered. Carl, realizing they'd shoot on
• 2:03
sight, begged X Factor to save Artie and held off security
• 2:07
himself. He was fatally shot in the
• 2:09
process. So place to big games.
• 2:14
After that, Artie moved into The X Factor complex to live and
• 2:17
train with a team. He played a key role in letting
• 2:20
them know Rusty Collins had been kidnapped by Frenzy.
• 2:24
Later, he got worried about Rusty again.
• 2:27
Artie followed him and skids into the Morlock Tunnels where
• 2:30
he met Leach and Caliban. At the time the Marauders were
• 2:34
slaughtering the Morlocks, Artie, Leach and Caliban were
• 2:38
terrorized by Saber Tooth, but thankfully X Factor arrived just
• 2:42
in time to save them. Artie got separated from Leach
• 2:45
and Caliban, but was found by Thor who helped him reconnect.
• 2:49
Those Cyclops and Marvel girl Jean Grey returned to The X
• 2:55
  Factor complex after the massacre.
• 2:57
Caliban and the remaining Warlocks decided to return to
• 3:01
the tunnels and Artie and Leach said their goodbyes.
• 3:04
Later, when Emma LaPorte was transferred to New York Hospital
• 3:09
for treatment from injuries Rusty had unintentionally
• 3:12
caused, Rusty struck a deal with the Morlock mask.
• 3:15
He would allow masks to deform him if masks restored Emma's
• 3:19
face. Artie, Skids and Boom Boom
• 3:23
helped Rusty get Emma out of the hospital and brought her to the
• 3:26
Morlocks temple. Mask did his part, but Emma
• 3:29
rejected the deal when she found out, saying her beauty wasn't
• 3:32
worth Rusty suffering. We love a Queen.
• 3:36
Rusty and Skids fought Masks, and he eventually reversed the
• 3:40
changes to both of them before retreating.
• 3:43
Artie, along with Rusty, Skids and Leech, were among the first
• 3:46
to discover X Factor's PR guy, Cameron Hodge, was up to
• 3:49
something shady. They overheard him talking to a
• 3:52
group called The Right. After X Factor battled
• 3:56
Apocalypse Horsemen in Central Park, Artie helped Rusty melt
• 4:00
the mountain of ice that Iceman had used to trap the villains.
• 4:04
Then, the kids were kidnapped by the Right and used as potential
• 4:08
  weapons. During their captivity, they
• 4:11
learned Cameron Hodge was actually the commander of the
• 4:13
Right. Thankfully, X Factor came up to
• 4:16
their rescue. Artie and Leach later met
• 4:19
Franklin Richards in the Power Pack, and the trio witnessed
• 4:22
  Franklin getting kidnapped by Quicksilver.
• 4:25
After Apocalypse was defeated, his massive sentient ship
• 4:29
crashed into X Factor's complex. The team moved into the ship,
• 4:33
which only mutants could enter. Caliban left with Apocalypse
• 4:38
around this time. During the holidays, the kids
• 4:40
received donated gifts and decided to give them to the
• 4:43
children displaced by the recent battles.
• 4:46
Artie even dressed up as an elf for the occasion.
• 4:48
It was adorable, and it further proves that Leach and Artie are
• 4:53
the cinnamon rolls of the Marvel Universe.
• 4:57
One night while they were asleep, Apocalypse reactivated
• 5:00
his control over ship, causing it to attack.
• 5:03
Rusty managed to free ships consciousness and The X Factor
• 5:06
disarmed a bomb on board. Once ship was back to normal, it
• 5:10
actually asked to stay with them.
• 5:13
It could control its entire structure, create rooms,
• 5:17
weapons, vehicles, basically anything, and even run training
• 5:21
programs and build living spaces, which is like super
• 5:24
super helpful. While exploring ship, the kids
• 5:28
ran into Beast, who was looking through some old photos and
• 5:31
shared the origins of The X Factor as the original X-Men and
• 5:34
students of Xavier School. Later, Infectia tricked Iceman
• 5:39
into letting her aboard ship. Beast tried to warn him that she
• 5:43
was dangerous, but due to his temporarily lowered
• 5:47
intelligence, Iceman did not get the message went right over his
• 5:51
head. Artie and the others had to stop
• 5:54
her from kissing Iceman cock blop or whatever.
• 5:59
When the Zartans and their leader Lord Zano disguised as
• 6:03
Avengers attacked, ship protected the kids, but they
• 6:07
also stepped in to help X Factor during the fight.
• 6:10
Later, when the team planned to send the kids to a private
• 6:13
school, Marvel Girl and Iceman took them shopping for clothes,
• 6:17
only to be attacked by the Alliance of Evil.
• 6:21
After defeating them, Freedom Force showed up, demanded
• 6:24
registration, and Rusty ended up turning himself into the Navy.
• 6:29
After seeing Rusty off at the naval base, Artie and Leach
• 6:32
enrolled at private boarding school called Saint Simons in
• 6:35
New Hampshire, where they met another young mutant whiz kid.
• 6:41
Not long after starting school, they were kidnapped by demon
• 6:44
infants who haunted mutants, which is just as terrifying as
• 6:49
it sounds. They were delivered to the demon
• 6:51
Nestier, who was mad they weren't actually infants and
• 6:56
held them hostage to motivate his minions to find real mutant
• 6:59
babies. While in captivity, Artie sent a
• 7:03
mental image to his old X Factor friends to clue them in.
• 7:07
The former students of X Factor, now calling themselves the X
• 7:10
Terminators, came to help, but they were also captured.
• 7:14
Everyone was teleported to Times Square, where the new mutant
• 7:18
magic was trying to bring her teammates back from Limbo.
• 7:22
Nastier used 10 kidnapped infants arranged in a mystical
• 7:27
pentagram to keep the portal open since their purity made
• 7:31
them perfect conduits for of magical energy.
• 7:35
Which is just oh, it's dark. Following clues from Wiz Kid,
• 7:42
Artie and Leach managed to shut down Nestier's computer and free
• 7:45
the Exterminators. The two then worked on the with
• 7:49
the New Mutants to save the babies and stop the demonic
• 7:52
  ritual. Rusty suggested the
• 7:54
Exterminators rescue Wiz Kid while the New Mutants handled
• 7:57
the rest. After they succeeded, Artie
• 8:00
stayed behind to look after the infants while the others
• 8:03
searched for magic. After the Inferno event ended,
• 8:08
the X Terminators and New Moons returned to X Factor ship,
• 8:11
bringing with them the rescued babies and Gossamer.
• 8:14
Artie and Leach eventually returned to Saint Simons with
• 8:17
Wizkid, and the three had more adventures under the X
• 8:22
Terminators names. At one point they were captured
• 8:26
by Marrow, who was leading a violent Morlock faction.
• 8:31
The X-Men were rescued them and brought them to Massachusetts
• 8:34
Academy where Generation X was training.
• 8:37
During their time there, Franklin Richards briefly
• 8:40
attended the Academy and he, Artie and Leach joined Howard
• 8:43
the Duck and Man Thing on a wild dimension hopping adventure to
• 8:48
save the multiverse. They stayed at the Academy for
• 8:52
several months until it was destroyed by Emma Frost's evil
• 8:56
sister Adrian Frost. After M Day, Artie lost his
• 9:01
mutant powers but kept his unusual appearance and muteness.
• 9:06
When he later joined the Future Foundation, they gave him a
• 9:08
helmet that let him project images the same way his old
• 9:12
powers did. Eventually, Artie resurfaced on
• 9:15
Krakoa, the new mutant homeland established by Xavier.
• 9:20
RIP to Krakoa as part of the new mutant culture.
• 9:24
Already trained within the quarry where he's barred with
• 9:27
Leech and lost during a session led by Silver Samurai.
• 9:31
So I think like I said, he is one of the two cinnamon rolls of
• 9:37
the Marvel Universe. Him and Leech are best friends,
• 9:41
very sweet together. If you want to know more about
• 9:43
Leech, just check out my channel because I have a breakdown of
• 9:46
that sweet little thing too. So I have some comics for you to
• 9:53
check out. Just keep in mind these are the
• 9:55
ones I've read. If there's more that you think I
• 9:59
should check out, let me know in the comments because I want to
• 10:01
read. I want to know more.
• 10:03
So starting off X Factor #10 through 33 X Terminators one
• 10:09
through 4, Future Foundation number one through 4, fantastic
• 10:15
450 fantastic years. Side note, Artie was mixed up
• 10:20
with Leech when it was printed, so Artie was accidentally
• 10:23
Leeches signature shade of green instead of pink.
• 10:27
It got fixed but I think that's just a really fun fact.
• 10:30
I like when those things happen. So I hope you enjoyed this
• 10:34
  character breakdown of Artie Maddox.
• 10:36
I hope you will like and subscribe so you don't miss any
• 10:38
more of these breakdowns and I hope you have a marvelous day.
• 10:42
  Goodbye.
