Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Disgraceland as a production of Double Elvis.
- 0:16Speaker 2: The stories about hood hip hop queen Cardi B are
- 0:19Speaker 2: in singe, she admitted to drugging and robbing men to
- 0:22Speaker 2: bankroll her rise from the streets. She allegedly ordered the
- 0:26Speaker 2: beatdown of a strip club bartender to scare off her man.
- 0:30Speaker 2: She definitely brawled with Nicki Minaj at a prestigious gala
- 0:33Speaker 2: event named after the liquor she loved, and proudly sporting
- 0:37Speaker 2: the signature red of the blood Streak. Gang Carti short
- 0:40Speaker 2: for Bacardi became America's biggest celebrity stripper in hip hop sensation.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Through the sheer force of personality, she took over reality
- 0:49Speaker 2: TV became one of the most successful female rappers of
- 0:52Speaker 2: all time, all on the back of her no fucks given,
- 0:55Speaker 2: in your face authenticity and armed with this diamond sharp
- 0:59Speaker 2: sense of self. Cardi B made great music. That music
- 1:03Speaker 2: you heard at the top of the show that wasn't
- 1:05Speaker 2: great music. That was a preset loop for my melotron
- 1:09Speaker 2: called all the Angels Sing MK three. I played you
- 1:14Speaker 2: that loop because I can't afford the rights to Girls
- 1:16Speaker 2: Like You by Maroon five with a featured verse by
- 1:19Speaker 2: No joke, Cardi B herself and why would I play
- 1:23Speaker 2: you that specific slice of red pilled cheese? Could I
- 1:26Speaker 2: afford it? Because that was the number one song in
- 1:29Speaker 2: America on September twenty nine, twenty eighteen, And that was
- 1:34Speaker 2: the night Cardi B found herself in the middle of
- 1:36Speaker 2: a violent melee and a queen strip club that led
- 1:39Speaker 2: to charges that still stand today, a potential prison sentence
- 1:43Speaker 2: in courtroom drama that has yet to play itself out.
- 1:47Speaker 2: On this episode, insta celebrity strip club beat downs, red
- 1:51Speaker 2: pill Cheese and the inimitable Cardi B. I'm Jake Brennan
- 1:56Speaker 2: and this is Disgraceland. Cardi B. Kept her right leg
- 2:20Speaker 2: aligned vertically with the pole and stood parallel to the
- 2:23Speaker 2: cold titanium rod that stretched from the floor to the ceiling.
- 2:27Speaker 2: She extended her left leg, pointed her toes and lifted
- 2:30Speaker 2: them about six inches from the ground, and then began
- 2:34Speaker 2: to twirl as she swung her voluptuous body with grace
- 2:38Speaker 2: around and around. She ended her motion by hooking the
- 2:42Speaker 2: pole with her extended left leg, gripping it with her
- 2:45Speaker 2: inner thigh. She clutched the top of the pole with
- 2:48Speaker 2: her right hand and squatted down and back, slowly, arching
- 2:51Speaker 2: her back slightly, popping her ass out just a touch
- 2:55Speaker 2: to accent her natural curves. It was a small but
- 2:59Speaker 2: attentive audience who she held and raptured the late shift.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Two old timers, one dude clearly a perb from central casting,
- 3:08Speaker 2: trench coat buttoned all the way up in the middle
- 3:10Speaker 2: of the summer, hands nowhere to be seen, disheveled and
- 3:13Speaker 2: unable to make eye contact with anyone since the nineteen eighties.
- 3:17Speaker 2: The other a total herb. White dude, thin hair that
- 3:20Speaker 2: was probably once blonde, but was now too thin and
- 3:23Speaker 2: too gray to properly color. He looked tired, beat down
- 3:27Speaker 2: by work, by his wife, by his life. He was
- 3:30Speaker 2: a familiar sight to Carnie. He and the countless other
- 3:33Speaker 2: middle aged working stiffs who looked just like him and
- 3:36Speaker 2: took this ride with her every night. She didn't mind.
- 3:40Speaker 2: She needed them as much as they needed her. She
- 3:43Speaker 2: threw trench coat pur of a look. His eyes started away,
- 3:46Speaker 2: and then she clutched the top of the pole with
- 3:49Speaker 2: her left hand just above her right and pulled her
- 3:51Speaker 2: body in slowly to the pole so that it was
- 3:54Speaker 2: positioned dead center against her. She pressed her forehead against
- 3:58Speaker 2: it first, and then threw her head, allowing her hair
- 4:01Speaker 2: to cascade down to her ass. She pulled herself toward
- 4:04Speaker 2: the pole again and slid it between her breasts, then
- 4:07Speaker 2: threw her head backward again while slowly grinding her crotch
- 4:10Speaker 2: against the pole. Thinning Hair Dude sat expressionless, just stared
- 4:15Speaker 2: at her dispassionately but focused. Trench Coatpurve looked like he
- 4:19Speaker 2: was going to burst his face flushed sweat dripping down
- 4:21Speaker 2: the sides of his head from his greasy hair, and
- 4:24Speaker 2: Cartie knew she had them, both of them. She writhed
- 4:27Speaker 2: up on the pole some more. As she swore, she
- 4:29Speaker 2: saw Thinning Hair Dude's lips start to form a smile,
- 4:32Speaker 2: and then, in one quick motion, she lifted her lower
- 4:35Speaker 2: body up, clutched the pole with her knees, slid herself
- 4:37Speaker 2: down the pole toward the floor, locking eyes with trench
- 4:40Speaker 2: Coat purb the entire way. Upon landing as her assim
- 4:44Speaker 2: at the floor, she extended both legs out like scissors,
- 4:48Speaker 2: completely straddling the pole. From a seated position. She continued
- 4:51Speaker 2: to rub herself against the pole, but now her face
- 4:54Speaker 2: had come alive. That big bronx personality was starting to
- 4:58Speaker 2: take over to ham it up for the audience. Sitting
- 5:01Speaker 2: on the floor straddling the pole, grinding gripping it with
- 5:04Speaker 2: both hands, she leaned backward and began twirling her long
- 5:07Speaker 2: brown hair while pantomiming a mild orgasm. She then began
- 5:11Speaker 2: pulling herself back up the pole, and as she did,
- 5:14Speaker 2: she stared straight at thinning hair Dude. He stared straight back.
- 5:18Speaker 2: He was transported away from a shitty job, away from
- 5:22Speaker 2: his demanding wife. She was all that mattered, and she
- 5:25Speaker 2: knew it. It was working. She had him, him and
- 5:28Speaker 2: everyone else. But more importantly, she found something she was
- 5:32Speaker 2: good at stripping. Thinning hair Dude and trench coat purb
- 5:36Speaker 2: were firmly in her grip near the point of climax
- 5:39Speaker 2: as Cardi b rode the pole back down and then
- 5:46Speaker 2: Cardi b let go of the subway pole, grabbed her
- 5:49Speaker 2: backpack on the seat behind her, and bounced out of
- 5:51Speaker 2: the a train car for her apartment in Washington Heights.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Stripping was a skill like anything else, and if she
- 5:58Speaker 2: was going to go get that money, she needed practice.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Her poll work in New York City subway cars in
- 6:03Speaker 2: the middle of the night were a hell of a
- 6:04Speaker 2: lot cheaper than renting a dance studio. Cardi had been
- 6:08Speaker 2: fired from the Amish market she was working at, and
- 6:11Speaker 2: the one good thing that came from the minimum wage
- 6:13Speaker 2: gig was the idea her boss had when he fired her.
- 6:16Speaker 2: You should dance. You get the body for it. Go
- 6:18Speaker 2: across the street, they'll probably hire you. Across the street
- 6:22Speaker 2: was the strip club New York Dolls, and although young
- 6:25Speaker 2: twenty something Cardi B likely knew nothing of the nineteen
- 6:28Speaker 2: seventies downtown proto punk band of the same name, the
- 6:31Speaker 2: group's trashy glam in New York City street style is
- 6:34Speaker 2: a foundational part of Cardi B's makeup. Her DNA is
- 6:38Speaker 2: as New York as David Johansson's menacing androgyny, in her
- 6:41Speaker 2: personality like Johansson's, as big and bombastic as anything to
- 6:46Speaker 2: ever come out of the Five Boroughs. Management at New
- 6:49Speaker 2: York Dolls was quick to recognize this. They knew the
- 6:52Speaker 2: little girl from the market across the street was on brand,
- 6:55Speaker 2: that all she had to do was act naturally, and
- 6:57Speaker 2: the bridge and Tunnel herbs would unload their walls onto
- 7:00Speaker 2: the glass stage and she was hired. But once hired,
- 7:04Speaker 2: on as a dancer, it was survival of the fittest.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Dancing was a hustle. You not only needed to be
- 7:09Speaker 2: good at dancing, at pollwork, at working the customers, but
- 7:12Speaker 2: you needed to invest in yourself. The girls who brought
- 7:15Speaker 2: home the most bread two three grand a night looked
- 7:18Speaker 2: more like Jessica Rabbit curved hip hop superheroes than they
- 7:21Speaker 2: did Cardi B, who at the time was going by
- 7:24Speaker 2: her birth name bel Callous Almanzar, and the competition in
- 7:28Speaker 2: the clubs had curves for days, humongous asses and big
- 7:32Speaker 2: fake boobs. Bell Callous needed to invest in herself to
- 7:35Speaker 2: make that big bank, and so that's what she did,
- 7:38Speaker 2: and before she knew it, she was one of the
- 7:40Speaker 2: most in demand dancers in Manhattan, even traveling out of
- 7:43Speaker 2: state for appearances. But it was her regular appearances on
- 7:47Speaker 2: Instagram that brought her real fame. Her videos with observations
- 7:51Speaker 2: on life, love stripping, even advice from the dudes and
- 7:54Speaker 2: the haters. Her follower count grew right alongside her growing curves,
- 7:58Speaker 2: and she made no apologies for her chosen profession or
- 8:01Speaker 2: her implants. But it wasn't because of her looks or
- 8:04Speaker 2: her dancing that her social profile blew up. It was
- 8:07Speaker 2: because she was funny as fuck. She was unique with
- 8:11Speaker 2: that big Bronx accent and quipped totally raw and totally
- 8:14Speaker 2: authentic musings on most everything, and there was no faking
- 8:17Speaker 2: it to make it. There was just this is who
- 8:19Speaker 2: I am later for you. If you can't get with me,
- 8:21Speaker 2: I'm gonna make you laugh, even if you hate on
- 8:23Speaker 2: me vibe and it was infectious on Instagram, Cardi B
- 8:27Speaker 2: turned herself into a meme machine, spitting out constant, quotable
- 8:30Speaker 2: one liners that spoke to her specific sense of self
- 8:33Speaker 2: and unique brand of feminism. I think as bad bitches
- 8:36Speaker 2: as a gift from God. It doesn't matter where life
- 8:39Speaker 2: takes me or what life gives me. I'm gonna be
- 8:40Speaker 2: the way I am to the day I die, And
- 8:42Speaker 2: if you don't like it, go die first, bitch. I
- 8:45Speaker 2: don't care about anyone not liking me. You bitch is
- 8:47Speaker 2: barely like yourselves. And then my personal favorite, yo, I
- 8:51Speaker 2: want to eat my own pussy. She created her own language,
- 8:55Speaker 2: popularizing words like ohkur meaning okay, regular, regular, schmegular meaning
- 8:59Speaker 2: girl store, or you know your basic bitch yeao meaning yeah,
- 9:03Speaker 2: that's cool, but whatever, and schmuney, as in that's what
- 9:07Speaker 2: I want, that m ony what it can't buy, I
- 9:09Speaker 2: can't use give me that shmuney. But once she popped
- 9:13Speaker 2: on Instagram, the VH one reality television show Love and
- 9:16Speaker 2: Hip Hop came calling, and with her platform on swollen,
- 9:19Speaker 2: her new manager suggested she rap on those videos she
- 9:22Speaker 2: was posting, and once that attitude, humor, and accent was
- 9:26Speaker 2: set to rhymes, a megastar was born. After guesting on
- 9:30Speaker 2: various singles with bigger artists, releasing her own mixtape, Gangs
- 9:34Speaker 2: the Bitch Music Volume one, Cardi B signed with Atlantic
- 9:37Speaker 2: Records and in twenty seventeen released her for a single,
- 9:41Speaker 2: Bodak Yellow, and her debut went to number one on
- 9:44Speaker 2: the Billboard Hot one hundred chart, making Cardi B the
- 9:48Speaker 2: first female rapper to go number one since Lauren Hill
- 9:51Speaker 2: back in nineteen ninety eight. But another female rapper almost
- 9:55Speaker 2: prevented it from happening. Nikki the Boss aka Nikki the
- 9:59Speaker 2: Ninja aka the Female Wheezy aka Nicki Minaj. Nicki Minaj
- 10:05Speaker 2: had a thing for the most hated Cardi B. There
- 10:26Speaker 2: wasn't a square engi of wall visible beneath the cutout
- 10:29Speaker 2: magazine images and posters of Taylor Swift blanketing seventeen year
- 10:33Speaker 2: old Jessica's bedroom in a diy T swizz collage of blonde,
- 10:38Speaker 2: pink and bedazzled pop style. Jessica was a Swiftie, a
- 10:42Speaker 2: Taylor Swift superfan, and she had work to do. An
- 10:46Speaker 2: hour earlier, a series of dms set off her Instagram
- 10:49Speaker 2: notifications from Vic the Trick, who was part of the Barbs.
- 10:53Speaker 2: The Barbs were Nicki Minaj's answer to the Swifties. But
- 10:57Speaker 2: where the Swifties were friendly, inclusive, wholesome digital BFFs to
- 11:01Speaker 2: their idle Tata, the Barbs were hard, dead serious defenders
- 11:05Speaker 2: of their idol, Nicki the Boss. They were known for
- 11:08Speaker 2: stomping down Nicki Minaj haters online with the ferociousness of
- 11:11Speaker 2: a pride of lions protecting their cup. Vic the Trick's
- 11:15Speaker 2: first message was direct, Yo, you was swifty. Your girl
- 11:19Speaker 2: single is about to be bounced from the number one
- 11:21Speaker 2: slot by that hole Cardi and we need to stop
- 11:23Speaker 2: that from happening. The Barbs, like their idle Nicki Minaj,
- 11:27Speaker 2: had a thing for Cardi B. It was competitive, territorial,
- 11:31Speaker 2: zero sum. Cardi B's win was their loss, so fuck
- 11:34Speaker 2: that bitch. Let's keep her out of the number one
- 11:36Speaker 2: slot and send her back up on that pole. But
- 11:39Speaker 2: all Jessica Wanda was Taylor Swift's song to remain at
- 11:41Speaker 2: number one, because Taylor was everything. Taylor was the reason
- 11:45Speaker 2: there was swiftness. Taylor was the reason she had a kimono.
- 11:48Speaker 2: So Cardi B would have to find another way on
- 11:50Speaker 2: to the top of the charts. Jessica wasted no time
- 11:53Speaker 2: and headed online, posting your mission today, fellow Swifties, is
- 11:57Speaker 2: this stream Look what you made me do non stop
- 12:01Speaker 2: on all platforms. We can push Cardi B out of
- 12:04Speaker 2: the way and keep Queen Tete at number one where
- 12:06Speaker 2: she belongs. Do it, Swifties. The Barbs got behind the
- 12:10Speaker 2: action too, and soon both fan armies were streaming Taylor
- 12:13Speaker 2: Swift's single repeatedly on as many platforms as they could,
- 12:16Speaker 2: trying to keep it at number one, streaming for vengeance
- 12:19Speaker 2: in an effort to hold Cardi B down, But it
- 12:22Speaker 2: was no use. Carti's track Bodak Yellow was too good,
- 12:26Speaker 2: Carti's personality too big, Carti's own fans, the Barti Gang
- 12:30Speaker 2: too inspired. Her song popped out of speakers and headphones,
- 12:34Speaker 2: everywhere organically, without digital armies rallying to some contrived campaign.
- 12:40Speaker 2: When her single overthrew Taylor Swifts, Cardi B was too
- 12:43Speaker 2: ecstatic to let the rumors that Nicki Minaj was trying
- 12:46Speaker 2: to mess with her money mess with her. Hater's gonna
- 12:49Speaker 2: hate hate hate, and a lot of haters hate it
- 12:52Speaker 2: and had lots to say about Cardi B. Another stripper
- 12:55Speaker 2: turned rapper, amazing what passes for talent these days? Can
- 12:59Speaker 2: you imagine all all the STDs she's carrying. Takes little
- 13:02Speaker 2: to no talent to create rap. Just write an expletive
- 13:05Speaker 2: filled rant and put a drum beat to it. She
- 13:07Speaker 2: did a vine that went viral celebrity status overnight. She
- 13:11Speaker 2: needs someone to shove something into her mouth. You sing
- 13:14Speaker 2: what work? Get over your s O God, She's total trash,
- 13:17Speaker 2: Wake up, you overrated stripper pure ghd tt oh. Cardi
- 13:23Speaker 2: B is only interested in the schmuney and highly overrate.
- 13:27Speaker 2: She's a train wreck headed for a dumpster viral, pure trash,
- 13:31Speaker 2: Give me a fucking break, hard work? How hard can
- 13:34Speaker 2: it be? All of her songs are the same nasty,
- 13:36Speaker 2: foul mouth lyrics over and over again. She needs to
- 13:39Speaker 2: go back to the crack house fuck that. There are
- 13:43Speaker 2: two hard truths about Cardi B. She is totally authentic
- 13:47Speaker 2: and she works her ass off, just as her star
- 13:52Speaker 2: was mid supernova ascent. Cardi B found out she was
- 13:55Speaker 2: pregnant in September of twenty seventeen. She had gotten married
- 13:59Speaker 2: in secret the offset from Migos, the trio from Georgia
- 14:02Speaker 2: behind the smash Bad and Bougie single. Rather than take
- 14:06Speaker 2: time off as would have been totally acceptable, Cardi B
- 14:09Speaker 2: put in work. There was a record to make. She
- 14:12Speaker 2: locked herself in the studio for three months, worked round
- 14:15Speaker 2: the clock and endured the constant fatigue and discomforts of pregnancy. Nausea,
- 14:20Speaker 2: bloody noses, stuffy noses, anxiety, aches, pains, cravings, bloatings, headaches, constipation,
- 14:25Speaker 2: mood swings, all without complaining, and throughout it all she
- 14:28Speaker 2: hunk tough and the result was undeniable. The album she
- 14:32Speaker 2: completed while Invasion of Privacy, was a smash creatively and commercially.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Variety called it one of the most powerful debuts in
- 14:41Speaker 2: the millennium. The New York Times brave that it was
- 14:43Speaker 2: a hip hop album that doesn't sound anything like any
- 14:46Speaker 2: of its temporal peers, and they were both right, especially
- 14:49Speaker 2: the times. Invasion of Privacy doesn't sound like anything else
- 14:53Speaker 2: and a variety's point, the album is refreshingly raw. It's
- 14:57Speaker 2: Cardi B's big, major label debut full length, but it's
- 15:00Speaker 2: totally authentic to her unique voice and point of view.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Nothing on it, not the production of lyrical content, is
- 15:06Speaker 2: cleaned up or watered down for mass consumption. Yet the
- 15:09Speaker 2: album debuted at number one on the Billboard Charts and
- 15:13Speaker 2: Cardi B became the first female artist to chart thirteen entries.
- 15:16Speaker 2: At the same time, Invasion of Privacy also became the
- 15:20Speaker 2: most streamed album by a female artist in a single
- 15:23Speaker 2: week's time. Two of the album's singles, Vodak Yellow and
- 15:26Speaker 2: I Like It, shot to number one, and by the
- 15:29Speaker 2: fall of twenty eighteen, six months after it was released,
- 15:33Speaker 2: Invasion of Privacy was certified double platinum, and when all
- 15:37Speaker 2: was said and done, all of the album's thirteen tracks
- 15:40Speaker 2: were certified gold or higher. Cardi B's debut album wasn't
- 15:46Speaker 2: your run of the mills success story. It was a
- 15:48Speaker 2: massive smash, and that kind of success comes with perks,
- 15:52Speaker 2: fame and money, of course, but also access doors opened
- 15:57Speaker 2: for you that previously barred you from entry. In the
- 16:00Speaker 2: fall of twenty eighteen, the guest list for Harper Bazaar's
- 16:04Speaker 2: annual fashion Week Sore at Manhattan's prestigious Plaza Hotel listed
- 16:09Speaker 2: Carti B's name along with an uber a list of
- 16:12Speaker 2: guests including Kendall Jenner, Justin Thirow, Russell Westbrook, Meek mill
- 16:16Speaker 2: A o G, Uptown Girl, Christy Brinkley, among others. Carti
- 16:21Speaker 2: was distracted on the red carpet Nicki Minaj that first
- 16:24Speaker 2: class pain in the ass was going to be there.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Nicki and her Barb's bs, along with their low keyed
- 16:29Speaker 2: disses on Instagram, liking posts that disparaged Carti's flow, etc.
- 16:34Speaker 2: It all had Nicki Minaj on Cardi B's last nurve.
- 16:38Speaker 2: But the offense that had Carti most upset was Nicki's
- 16:41Speaker 2: supposed diss of Carti's parenting. After Carti had created one,
- 16:45Speaker 2: if not the most successful debuts by a female hip
- 16:48Speaker 2: hop artist while pregnant, and had then decided against going
- 16:52Speaker 2: on the road with Bruno Mars, turning down a massive
- 16:54Speaker 2: payday in order to stay home with a newborn baby
- 16:57Speaker 2: culture and to rear that baby. Bond with that baby
- 17:00Speaker 2: and raised that baby. Fuck Nicki Minaj and her Pink
- 17:03Speaker 2: Friday Barbie bullshit. Nicki was decked out in a sequined
- 17:07Speaker 2: tiger print gown straight off the runway, her hair blonde,
- 17:10Speaker 2: maximum Vami and Carti strolled the red carpet in a
- 17:14Speaker 2: massive dul jacabana gown scarlet with ruffles, announcing her arrival
- 17:18Speaker 2: with the subtlety of a diamond encrusted sledgehammer. Her blood
- 17:21Speaker 2: red platform heels killed and were killing her and she
- 17:25Speaker 2: was in no mood. So when someone stepped on the
- 17:27Speaker 2: train of her dress, Cardi B's blood boiled, and when
- 17:31Speaker 2: she turned around to see that that someone was who
- 17:33Speaker 2: she believed to be, Nicki Minaj, Carti lost it. She
- 17:39Speaker 2: went at her hot and instantaneous a five foot three
- 17:43Speaker 2: inch manic fury of violence, shouting down Nicki Minaj in
- 17:46Speaker 2: that thick bronx accent and raging toward her. Security quickly
- 17:50Speaker 2: sprang into action and threw themselves between the two brawling
- 17:53Speaker 2: hip hop divas. In the midst of the melee, Cardi
- 17:57Speaker 2: shouted out at Nikki, say some shit about my kid
- 17:59Speaker 2: again and lunged through a security before Nikki's security stopped her.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Then Cardi bent over and took off her shoe, the
- 18:06Speaker 2: one with the sharp stiletto that had been driving her
- 18:08Speaker 2: crazy since she'd arrived. It was no longer a fashion item.
- 18:11Speaker 2: It's a weapon. Once freed from her foot and in
- 18:14Speaker 2: her hand, Carti launched it straight at Nikki's head. Security
- 18:17Speaker 2: scrambled to move Nikki out of the plaza. Cardi took
- 18:20Speaker 2: the beat and realized her gown had been ripped so
- 18:22Speaker 2: bad her ass was hanging out. Her security used the
- 18:24Speaker 2: train to cover her and hustled her out of the
- 18:26Speaker 2: plaza barefoot. A lesser woman would have been humiliated, but
- 18:31Speaker 2: not one who is so comfortable in her own semi
- 18:33Speaker 2: exposed skin. There was no humiliation for Cardi B. Plaza
- 18:37Speaker 2: Hotel or not harveer'st bizarre Gala Fashion Week, Whatever the
- 18:40Speaker 2: fuck this was who Cardi B was? Fuck them all
- 18:43Speaker 2: and fuck Nicki Minaj. Bitch had it coming. We'll be
- 18:47Speaker 2: right back after this word word word, Cardi B, quote
- 18:53Speaker 2: unquote emotional gangsta offered up regular relationship advice on record
- 18:58Speaker 2: and on Instagram two her forty five million plus followers
- 19:01Speaker 2: and fans. Carti's advice and matters of love were self empowering,
- 19:05Speaker 2: shamelessly materialistic, and came with just a hint of vulnerability.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Though she married in secret to Offset, Carti made no
- 19:13Speaker 2: secret about her love and admiration for her new husband,
- 19:17Speaker 2: but the relationship wasn't without problems. In late twenty seventeen,
- 19:21Speaker 2: Offset's iCloud account was hacked, revealing not only explicit videos
- 19:25Speaker 2: of Cardi from her days on the pole, but also
- 19:28Speaker 2: a video of one of Osset's friends, a young unidentified woman,
- 19:32Speaker 2: dancing naked in a hotel room. Rumors of the young
- 19:36Speaker 2: husband's infidelity lit the Internet on fire, and Carti blew
- 19:39Speaker 2: it all off with the rumors and the suspicion, and
- 19:42Speaker 2: no doubt stung, and these suspicions were likely swirling around
- 19:45Speaker 2: in her head. On August twenty nine, twenty eighteen, when
- 19:48Speaker 2: she and her entourage entered Angels Strip Club in Queen's,
- 19:51Speaker 2: New York. The night was supposed to be about blowing
- 19:54Speaker 2: off steam, having some fun, and that's what these places
- 19:57Speaker 2: were for, except now it would be Cardi b in
- 19:59Speaker 2: her entourage sitting on sticky wooden chairs in the audience,
- 20:03Speaker 2: making it rain singles onto the stage. Carti's time on
- 20:06Speaker 2: stage was over, but it didn't mean she couldn't appreciate
- 20:09Speaker 2: a good night out at the club with her man,
- 20:11Speaker 2: and that's what was set to happen when they entered.
- 20:14Speaker 2: The bass bumping from the large subs under the beer
- 20:17Speaker 2: stained stage, a shiny faux oak color dark like the
- 20:21Speaker 2: rest of the club, black barstools, and soft waves of
- 20:24Speaker 2: purple from the led striplights. The interior design, no doubt
- 20:29Speaker 2: intended to imply a sort of regal hip hop sexiness,
- 20:32Speaker 2: and the fake crystal chandelier above the stage, the overpriced
- 20:36Speaker 2: drinks and mandatory two drink minimum, the smell of urine
- 20:39Speaker 2: permeating the excitement and desperation in the air. It all
- 20:43Speaker 2: added up to an utter drag that was tolerable only
- 20:46Speaker 2: because near naked women were prancing around in thongs and
- 20:49Speaker 2: or hotpants and pasties, some strippers working on stage and
- 20:53Speaker 2: on the couches out back her lap dancing tips perfectly
- 20:56Speaker 2: legal intimate performances that went from innocent to prostate tutionin
- 21:00Speaker 2: with the first flash of real cash and the other women,
- 21:04Speaker 2: scantily clad waitresses and bartenders serving up watered down cocktails
- 21:08Speaker 2: to thugs on pervert row and professionals at the bar,
- 21:12Speaker 2: and to Carti's estimation, the bartenders were a problem, especially
- 21:16Speaker 2: that short one with the kinky hair and the impossibly
- 21:19Speaker 2: small waistline who called herself Jade. Carti was rolling deep.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Her man Offset and his group Migos were making a
- 21:26Speaker 2: paid appearance at the club. Carti had her security in
- 21:29Speaker 2: tow as well as some friends, a group that swelled
- 21:31Speaker 2: with hangers on. Once inside Angels, it was loud in
- 21:35Speaker 2: that bass bumping. Carti wanted something from the bar. She
- 21:39Speaker 2: glanced over. There was that little trick, Jade smiling, batting
- 21:43Speaker 2: those fake eyelashes, and her sister Batty G at the
- 21:46Speaker 2: other end of the stick. The two of them had
- 21:48Speaker 2: dudes three deep behind stools competing for their attention. Jade
- 21:52Speaker 2: was aware of Cardi B's presence. Everyone was so Jade
- 21:55Speaker 2: was stressing in her sister Batty G knew why she
- 21:58Speaker 2: and Jade had Cardio on watch ever since they ran
- 22:01Speaker 2: into her in a hotel lobby in Atlanta a couple
- 22:03Speaker 2: months earlier, where they claim Cardi rolled up on them
- 22:06Speaker 2: and out of nowhere, threatened to beat them down if
- 22:08Speaker 2: they messed with their man. Then, according to the sisters,
- 22:12Speaker 2: Cardi B backed her words up with continuous threats of
- 22:15Speaker 2: violence on Instagram. Jade and Betty G, if they weren't scared,
- 22:19Speaker 2: were at the very least cautious of Cardi. To the world,
- 22:22Speaker 2: Cardi B was a hip hop social media superhero, but
- 22:25Speaker 2: to the sisters, she was hood as fuck, a blood
- 22:28Speaker 2: gang affiliate, totally intimidating. From behind the bar, Jade caught
- 22:33Speaker 2: Carti's stare. She tried avoiding it. Couldn't Cardi B AKA
- 22:37Speaker 2: the most hated bitch on the planet, as she had
- 22:39Speaker 2: jokingly referred to herself, her wrath as real in that room.
- 22:43Speaker 2: As the bumping sub Jade focused on the drink she
- 22:46Speaker 2: was making, pressed her thumb to the soda gun. It
- 22:49Speaker 2: spat out flat club soda from a dirty line into
- 22:51Speaker 2: a dirty glass with dirty smelling ice. As she grabbed
- 22:55Speaker 2: a lime, threw it into the glass and slid it
- 22:57Speaker 2: across the bar to the thug with the twenty. She
- 22:59Speaker 2: kept the change and kept her focus on the drinks,
- 23:02Speaker 2: avoiding the South Bronx sirens staring her down, and Jade
- 23:05Speaker 2: wondered what her sister was doing at the other end
- 23:07Speaker 2: of the bar. She was afraid to look up for
- 23:10Speaker 2: fear of catching Cardi's stare. She grabbed the gun again
- 23:13Speaker 2: and sprayed more so into the glass with a splash
- 23:15Speaker 2: of Smirnoff grabbed another line with her long, dirty fingers,
- 23:18Speaker 2: threw it into the glass and slid it across the
- 23:20Speaker 2: bar to the newest thug with the twenty. Then she
- 23:23Speaker 2: turned to the bar again, and that's when she felt
- 23:26Speaker 2: it crash right across her pretty face. Glass ice smear
- 23:30Speaker 2: it off. Then the swarm of thugs at the bar,
- 23:33Speaker 2: someone grabbed her hair, pulled her down. All she could
- 23:35Speaker 2: do was hear that voice, that familiar, thick bronx accent.
- 23:39Speaker 2: You fuck my husband? What Jade thought? You fuck my husband? Jay,
- 23:44Speaker 2: amidst the melee thought to herself, how could she asked
- 23:47Speaker 2: me a question like that? How could she ask me?
- 23:49Speaker 2: I'm a sister, you asked me that. What do you
- 23:52Speaker 2: get your balls big enough to ask me that? Again,
- 23:55Speaker 2: that bronx accented voice, but now closer to her, above
- 23:59Speaker 2: her hovering, Just tell me, Jade thought to herself. I'm
- 24:03Speaker 2: not answering you. I'm not gonna answer that. It's stupid. Again,
- 24:07Speaker 2: the voice over the subs You're very smart, JD. You
- 24:11Speaker 2: give me all these answers, but you don't give me
- 24:13Speaker 2: the right answer. I'm gonna ask you again, did you
- 24:16Speaker 2: did you not? Jade in her head, I'm not gonna
- 24:20Speaker 2: answer it. It's a sick question. You're a sick fuck
- 24:22Speaker 2: and I'm not that sick that I'm gonna answer it.
- 24:24Speaker 2: I'm not telling you anything. You're a sick bastard. I
- 24:27Speaker 2: feel sorry for you. I really do you fuck my husband?
- 24:30Speaker 2: You fuck my husband. Then someone grabbed Jade by her hair,
- 24:37Speaker 2: long piercing nails like daggers dragged across your scalp. Jade
- 24:41Speaker 2: felt herself being pulled up over the bar, then a
- 24:44Speaker 2: hard thump to her skull. Jade could smell cigarette ashes,
- 24:47Speaker 2: could taste the grimy tobacco on her glossed lips. Then
- 24:51Speaker 2: smacks to the skull and a giant crash in the
- 24:53Speaker 2: back bar, broken glass, spilled water, all the result of
- 24:56Speaker 2: a giant hooka pipe that had been launched shatter. Finally
- 25:00Speaker 2: she was let go. She slid down behind the bar
- 25:03Speaker 2: to the sounds of the melee entering its second phase.
- 25:06Speaker 2: It's all over but the shrieking phase. Security hustling out
- 25:09Speaker 2: her attackers, her attackers busting out a final round of
- 25:12Speaker 2: shit talk, and then that big bronx accent again. Fuck
- 25:17Speaker 2: with my man, fuck with my money, fuck with my man,
- 25:20Speaker 2: my man, I'm blood. I'll fuck you bitches up. What
- 25:24Speaker 2: might have sounded intimidating, harsh, violent, aggressive, it was just
- 25:28Speaker 2: Cardi B being herself whatever and wherever the hell she
- 25:32Speaker 2: happened to be the club Instagram, same thing, Cardi B
- 25:35Speaker 2: being Cardi B, shouting down haters, and then it was over.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Authenticity is why Cardi B was at the top of
- 25:58Speaker 2: the game, number one hits, massive royalty checks, sold out shows, diamonds,
- 26:03Speaker 2: luxury automobiles, a new house for a mama, a book deal,
- 26:06Speaker 2: a movie deal, and a massive rabbit following. As Cardi
- 26:09Speaker 2: B says, I'm rich, bitch, and I smell like it.
- 26:13Speaker 2: The charges the sisters are throwing at her for the
- 26:15Speaker 2: incident of angels weren't anything to worry about. Cardi B
- 26:18Speaker 2: showed up in court looking like a corporate hood goddess
- 26:20Speaker 2: and rejected the plea deal. She'd beat the rout. It
- 26:24Speaker 2: was kids stuck the misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment and assault,
- 26:28Speaker 2: and it only carried a short prison sentence, probably a year,
- 26:31Speaker 2: maybe five. Whatever, she knew she'd beat him. After all,
- 26:35Speaker 2: she'd done worse and got away with it. Trench coat
- 26:38Speaker 2: Purv sat on the edge of the bed, nervous and
- 26:41Speaker 2: the hotel room is too expensive, but still the ac
- 26:44Speaker 2: was busted, and the room was too hot, and he
- 26:46Speaker 2: was too shy to take off his coat, and so
- 26:49Speaker 2: he just sat there, afraid to make eye contact with
- 26:52Speaker 2: the dancer whose offer he'd taken up. It was just
- 26:55Speaker 2: too good to refuse, and she was too sexy, and
- 26:57Speaker 2: he was too obsessed. He'd been falling allong around the
- 27:00Speaker 2: city since she got her start, at first on the subways,
- 27:03Speaker 2: then at various clubs where she danced, and finally to
- 27:06Speaker 2: disappearance on stage in Toronto. He nearly came in his
- 27:10Speaker 2: pants when she leaned over and sing song into his ear.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you want to fuck me? Yeah yeah, Let's
- 27:17Speaker 2: go back to my hotel and you can fuck me
- 27:19Speaker 2: all night. It was too much, he said nothing, just
- 27:22Speaker 2: stood up, pulled his wallet out of his pocket, opened
- 27:24Speaker 2: it to check its contents, flashed his water cash, gave
- 27:27Speaker 2: her a look and a nod toward the door. Within
- 27:29Speaker 2: seconds that were bouncing down the street toward the hotel
- 27:32Speaker 2: she'd mentioned. Once in the room, his mood changed, his
- 27:36Speaker 2: shyness had taken over, and she wanted to party. She
- 27:39Speaker 2: cracked the mini bar open and grabbed two nips near
- 27:41Speaker 2: knock for him, the cardi for her. She told him
- 27:44Speaker 2: to close his eyes while she got undressed. It was
- 27:46Speaker 2: part of the tea, she said, And when she did,
- 27:49Speaker 2: she slipped the powder into the smeir knof bottle, pulled
- 27:51Speaker 2: off her faux fur coat, grabbed him by the back
- 27:53Speaker 2: of the head with both hands, and buried his face
- 27:55Speaker 2: into her naked ample bosom, letting out that big bronx
- 27:59Speaker 2: laugh in the process. She shook his head free of
- 28:02Speaker 2: her chest, turned to the desk to grab the nips,
- 28:04Speaker 2: gave him his smirnov already uncapped, and proposed a toast
- 28:08Speaker 2: to get in that shmuney. He laughed, raised his bottle
- 28:11Speaker 2: to hers, shot it down and fell back onto the bed.
- 28:14Speaker 2: He felt instantly relaxed, and then when he awoke he
- 28:18Speaker 2: was tied up to the bed, his wrists bound by
- 28:21Speaker 2: his socks, hit his naked and absent his trench coat
- 28:24Speaker 2: with his limp little ticket taker exposed. He felt a
- 28:27Speaker 2: sharp shriek of embarrassment, But when he saw his wallet
- 28:30Speaker 2: lying on the bed below him and all of its
- 28:31Speaker 2: contents totally gone in the wind, just like her, he
- 28:35Speaker 2: felt humiliated. The robbery was straight hood, just like Cardi B.
- 28:40Speaker 2: That Cardi B didn't care. She let the world know
- 28:43Speaker 2: in an Instagram story, boasting about drugging and robbing men
- 28:46Speaker 2: from her stripping days as a means of survival. It
- 28:49Speaker 2: was a different reality for her then, but that reality
- 28:52Speaker 2: informed her and she never ran from it. Nothing was
- 28:55Speaker 2: handed to her. She had to go out and get it,
- 28:57Speaker 2: and that didn't change with success. There was no more
- 29:00Speaker 2: stripping or robbing, but there was still Cardi B. Who
- 29:03Speaker 2: She was, her authentic self, hustling, hard working, shit talking
- 29:08Speaker 2: big and proud, defending herself against their haters, against women
- 29:12Speaker 2: out to take her man, against divas out to keep
- 29:14Speaker 2: her down. And there was no faking need to make
- 29:16Speaker 2: it because she'd made it by being her own damn
- 29:19Speaker 2: self every step of the way, without compromise. Once more
- 29:23Speaker 2: rock and roll or punk, good gangster about that nothing
- 29:27Speaker 2: haters gonna hate. I'm Jake Brennan in this this disgraceland.
