- 0:34Speaker 2: and Onto tells all about it is lady behind this
- 0:36Speaker 2: whole thing, Lisa Manheim. Hi, Lisa, Hi, Lisa, Lisa Mensa
- 0:41Speaker 2: to Lisa's. Lisa is the co founder of that Lisa.
- 0:45Speaker 2: She's a co founder of the Tour to Peer and
- 0:47Speaker 2: executive director of the Hirschberg Foundation for Pancredit Cancer Research,
- 0:51Speaker 2: one of the organizations that will benefit from this massive
- 0:54Speaker 2: morning of all this love coming together. So when I
- 0:57Speaker 2: know I feel like this one, we get excited for
- 0:59Speaker 2: this one because the energy, the vibe at Towar to Peer.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Is just it's really special.
- 1:04Speaker 2: People get all pumped up to be out there by
- 1:06Speaker 2: the beach to make a difference together and get their
- 1:08Speaker 2: spin on.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Thank you. Yes you've been there to witness it, so
- 1:12Speaker 3: you know we say. It's not your average spin class.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Absolutely more of a big party with lots of energy
- 1:21Speaker 3: and emotion and really some super special moments throughout the
- 1:26Speaker 3: five hour ride.
- 1:28Speaker 2: So this event, look, it's fun to ride, fund to attend,
- 1:31Speaker 2: fun to support, do all the above, But I imploy you
- 1:34Speaker 2: if you want to spin with us next weekend, you
- 1:36Speaker 2: better check a website right now. As a last check,
- 1:38Speaker 2: it wasn't totally sold out, but that might change. This
- 1:40Speaker 2: event sells out every year, so please go to toardpeer
- 1:43Speaker 2: dot com right now to see if you can still
- 1:45Speaker 2: grab a bike and some friends to pull this thing
- 1:48Speaker 2: off next Sunday morning.
- 1:49Speaker 3: You're right, we do sill out. We have to. We
- 1:52Speaker 3: only own so many spin bikes, so when we fill
- 1:56Speaker 3: them up, we fill them up. I would definitely encourage
- 1:58Speaker 3: anybody to go to to peer too and hit register.
- 2:02Speaker 3: And the way it works is you choose a bike,
- 2:05Speaker 3: you choose to be a team captain of a bike,
- 2:07Speaker 3: and that bike has five one hour sessions and eight thirty,
- 2:11Speaker 3: nine thirty, ten thirty, eleven thirty and twelve thirty and
- 2:14Speaker 3: you can ride all five hours, or you can get
- 2:16Speaker 3: four other friends to ride along with you. And there's
- 2:19Speaker 3: a reeducation fee and a fundraising minimum. But as long
- 2:22Speaker 3: as the bike's got to raise seven hundred and fifty dollars,
- 2:26Speaker 3: that all goes towards one of the three cancer charities,
- 2:29Speaker 3: the Herschford Foundations, Uncle Party Foundation for Brain Cancer Research,
- 2:33Speaker 3: and the Cancer Support Community South Bay.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Everyone listening to this program right now. We know you
- 2:39Speaker 2: have four friends. We know you have four friends. We
- 2:41Speaker 2: know you have four coworkers that you must love dearly.
- 2:45Speaker 2: No four neighbors, four girlfriends, guy friends. Should be pretty
- 2:48Speaker 2: easy to get the five people together. And I will
- 2:51Speaker 2: say this from first hand experience the people. It's such
- 2:53Speaker 2: a great I guess it's such a great Five people
- 2:55Speaker 2: do matching colors, there's different themes, All the different teams
- 2:59Speaker 2: come with their flair. Thousands come together for toward Peer
- 3:03Speaker 2: every year because usually we're affected by cancer. We lost
- 3:06Speaker 2: a love wind to cancer and we're tired of it.
- 3:07Speaker 2: So we're out there spin our little butts off to
- 3:09Speaker 2: make a difference. And if we are sold out for
- 3:12Speaker 2: the bikes for next Sunday, Twitterpaer dot com.
- 3:14Speaker 1: If we are sold out by the time you go
- 3:15Speaker 1: to the website, just show up.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Anyways, It's such a great experience and watch people spend
- 3:21Speaker 2: watch these enthusiastic, passionate teams and spend with these incredible
- 3:25Speaker 2: instructors with so much energy and inspiring words on the mic.
- 3:30Speaker 1: With the music.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Just a really cool thing to be a part of.
- 3:33Speaker 1: And it's not a competition.
- 3:35Speaker 2: You can spin at your own pace, so just take
- 3:37Speaker 2: it all in.
- 3:38Speaker 1: You're right there at the beach and with all these
- 3:39Speaker 1: amazing people.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. I tell people all the time. You
- 3:43Speaker 3: just have to be able to sit your seat on
- 3:45Speaker 3: the bike and peddle your legs. You can turn off
- 3:47Speaker 3: the tension and nobody cares because it's not a race.
- 3:51Speaker 3: You're not going anywhere. And while you're there, you're able
- 3:55Speaker 3: to watch five different you have five different hours with
- 4:00Speaker 3: five different themes, and so many different celebrity appearances and
- 4:04Speaker 3: entertainers and LA sports teams, mascots. They're all out there,
- 4:09Speaker 3: entertainers all out there trying to keep you motivated. And
- 4:13Speaker 3: add to the you know, add to the shared energy
- 4:16Speaker 3: of sport of peer.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Talk about some of the instructors you have on the stage. Boy,
- 4:19Speaker 2: these people are just wonderful. I want them to be
- 4:22Speaker 2: like my life coach. These spin instructors that she gets.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Like Lisa said, each each Spin instructor essentially hosts an hours, right.
- 4:30Speaker 1: They picked the music, they picked the vibe for that.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Hour, and they are literally talking to you and they
- 4:35Speaker 2: what they have to say is so impactful. And many
- 4:38Speaker 2: of them have been affected by cancer in so many
- 4:39Speaker 2: shape or form, like most of the people who come
- 4:41Speaker 2: to this event, and it's a beautiful thing to see
- 4:44Speaker 2: us all come together seriously spinning to make a difference.
- 4:47Speaker 2: But those moments with the music and the ocean right
- 4:49Speaker 2: in front of you is just and all these sweet people,
- 4:53Speaker 2: it's a must experience.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Yeah, we are really lucky to have the five instructors
- 4:58Speaker 3: that we have. The majority of them work teach out
- 5:01Speaker 3: of the Bay Club in the South Bay, and they
- 5:05Speaker 3: put a lot of energy into getting their playlist and
- 5:08Speaker 3: all the all the various antics that go on during
- 5:11Speaker 3: their ride. The detail level that they put in is
- 5:13Speaker 3: really super special. And then we we of course on
- 5:17Speaker 3: the stage. Always have a celebrity rider for every hour,
- 5:20Speaker 3: sometimes two on the main stage, and we always have
- 5:23Speaker 3: a hero rider each hour. We feature a different story
- 5:27Speaker 3: of a cancer survivor or somebody who's riding for someone
- 5:32Speaker 3: and I think that provides extra motivation as we share
- 5:36Speaker 3: their story and you see them up there. And then
- 5:39Speaker 3: I mean, my favorite parts are just seeing all of
- 5:42Speaker 3: the One of my favorite parts of seeing all the
- 5:44Speaker 3: local sports teams and the mascots. I mean, I'm a
- 5:47Speaker 3: huge mascot. I don't for some reason. I just love
- 5:50Speaker 3: a mascot. Yeah.
- 5:52Speaker 1: We Bailey comes sometimes right and kings Bailey Bailey.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Bailey all the time. We've got this year's Sparky from
- 6:01Speaker 3: the Sparks. We have Chuck the Condor from the Clippers
- 6:05Speaker 3: making the first toward to peer appears nice Gizmo from
- 6:09Speaker 3: the Galaxy, so so so many, and we have the
- 6:15Speaker 3: World Cup is going to be making a making its
- 6:18Speaker 3: way to toward a peer. They're going to be really
- 6:21Speaker 3: activating with their Yeah, they're giant. They've got a forty
- 6:24Speaker 3: foot bus that's going to bring out you know, energy
- 6:28Speaker 3: and activations. Amongst the many other sponsors that are activating
- 6:32Speaker 3: in the free health and Fitness Expo.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Very cool.
- 6:35Speaker 3: The King's the Galaxy, they'll all be out there. So
- 6:40Speaker 3: that part is that's the pure.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Fund And if there's still spaces for you and your
- 6:44Speaker 2: plus four to take over a spin bike, each bike
- 6:47Speaker 2: needs to raise seven fifty right.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's a fifty dollars registration feet and one
- 6:52Speaker 3: hundred dollars fundraising minimum per person, which is so easy
- 6:57Speaker 3: these days with social media when you register, when you register,
- 7:02Speaker 3: you get an individual fundraising page and all you have
- 7:05Speaker 3: to do is share that link on on any social
- 7:09Speaker 3: media or drop that link in an email to friend's family.
- 7:14Speaker 3: And we always say, like everybody's always surprised. We're like, oh,
- 7:18Speaker 3: that was a lot easier than I thought. Yeah, people
- 7:20Speaker 3: really do. People really do want to give and want
- 7:24Speaker 3: to support you, and it doesn't have to be large gifts.
- 7:27Speaker 3: But I think that's what that's what we all so
- 7:29Speaker 3: often here is how surprised people are when somebody from
- 7:33Speaker 3: their you know, middle school supported them.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Or a coworker, a co worker gave twenty five bucks,
- 7:38Speaker 2: like oh so and so Valentine Tip gave twenty five dollars.
- 7:42Speaker 2: You hear coworkers, people in your friend group people who
- 7:46Speaker 2: just have a big generous heart twenty bucks, thirty bucks,
- 7:48Speaker 2: fifty bucks, whatever they can give. It all adds up
- 7:50Speaker 2: and next you know, you met your goal. Your fellow
- 7:53Speaker 2: writers met their goal. And then hopefully, as we pretty
- 7:56Speaker 2: much every year, you raise a million every year.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Right, yeah, we we we raised over a million dollars.
- 8:02Speaker 3: We hit a million, a million and a half last year. Wow,
- 8:06Speaker 3: And we should be on target if everybody, everybody who's
- 8:10Speaker 3: outriding to to raise more than you know, set the
- 8:13Speaker 3: goal of one hundred and fifty per person, seven thirty
- 8:15Speaker 3: per bike, but so many will raise more and again
- 8:18Speaker 3: with the tools and that it's about you got it.
- 8:21Speaker 3: You got to ask. That's how that's how fundraising works.
- 8:25Speaker 3: And long ago was told that it's a mythsta to ask,
- 8:28Speaker 3: it's a good deed to ask and as well as
- 8:32Speaker 3: it is to give. And the beauty of this event
- 8:35Speaker 3: is that we have so many active, engaged sponsors who
- 8:41Speaker 3: cover the costs of the event. So one hundred percent
- 8:43Speaker 3: of everything that a participant raises goes right to our
- 8:47Speaker 3: cancer charities, which is really phenomenal. We're super blessed with
- 8:51Speaker 3: the sponsor sponsorship community that we have and it's like,
- 8:55Speaker 3: not only are do we have great sponsors like Sketchers
- 8:58Speaker 3: as are are presenting sponsor, and day Club and the
- 9:01Speaker 3: Clippers as even this year the Clippers are spaunshing. We
- 9:04Speaker 3: have so many but they not only are writing the check,
- 9:08Speaker 3: but they're bringing out the riders to ride, they're setting
- 9:12Speaker 3: up the boosts and they're really involving up the boots
- 9:14Speaker 3: and the expo. They're very involved, and I think it's
- 9:16Speaker 3: really speaks volumes about the event that sponsors are coming
- 9:21Speaker 3: back year after year and recognizing what an awesome date
- 9:26Speaker 3: is to engage their employees and to obviously market their
- 9:31Speaker 3: company and share goodwill. Yeah, we're super excited. Yeah, I
- 9:35Speaker 3: can't believe it's your fourteen already.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 9:38Speaker 2: And again all the money raised and this is for
- 9:40Speaker 2: Tour the Peer Manhattan Beach next Sunday morning, May of seventeenth,
- 9:44Speaker 2: Tour to Peer dot com for all the information and
- 9:46Speaker 2: the three charitys again, I want you to touch on
- 9:49Speaker 2: Hirschberg Foundation for paying credit cancer research elements and the
- 9:51Speaker 2: other two that the Tour to Peer benefits, the cancer
- 9:54Speaker 2: support community South of Bay. It's the Dando Beach based
- 9:57Speaker 2: nonprofit founded back in the eighties free emotional support, education,
- 10:02Speaker 2: and wellness programs to cancer patients and their families, and
- 10:05Speaker 2: they are wonderful. And also the Uncle Corey Foundation for
- 10:10Speaker 2: Brain Cancer Research. They're another nonprofit that's dedicated to funding
- 10:14Speaker 2: innovative adult in pediatric brain cancer research, particularly focusing on
- 10:19Speaker 2: how do you say geoblastoma, geoblastoma, geo blastoma, Inspired by
- 10:24Speaker 2: the loss of Corey Hunter. Uncle Corey, the Foundation has
- 10:27Speaker 2: raised millions to support over one hundred research grounds aimed
- 10:30Speaker 2: at improving treatments and survival rates.
- 10:33Speaker 1: So you got two biggies right there.
- 10:35Speaker 2: And then yours named after your late step dad, the
- 10:38Speaker 2: Hirshberg Foundation for pan Credit Cancer Research, to talk about
- 10:41Speaker 2: what you do.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I know we have you on the show regularly, and gosh,
- 10:43Speaker 1: you guys are.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Just on the forefront of advancements in the pancredit cancer
- 10:47Speaker 2: research space based right there at UCLA, and you've just
- 10:51Speaker 2: made so many strides since you began your organization thirty
- 10:55Speaker 2: years ago.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Thank you, thank you. Yes, it's been hour in our
- 10:58Speaker 3: twenty ninth year, which is hard to believe. But our
- 11:03Speaker 3: whole focus is to keep raising money to find a
- 11:07Speaker 3: cure while also supporting patients who are living with the disease,
- 11:12Speaker 3: and we do that through our fundraisers like Tour to
- 11:14Speaker 3: Peer and LA Cancer Challenge, and through patient events. We
- 11:19Speaker 3: just had a symposium last month at UCLA where over
- 11:24Speaker 3: forty survivors came together with doctors, family members, caregivers, community
- 11:29Speaker 3: members and spent the day learning about the latest updates
- 11:34Speaker 3: in pancradic cancer research, things like nutrition. We've really been
- 11:39Speaker 3: able to not only fund research, but you know, support
- 11:43Speaker 3: patients steadily. And there's more breaking news happening right now
- 11:48Speaker 3: in the pancratic cancer space than there have been in
- 11:50Speaker 3: a really long time, exciting, a lot of yeah, really exciting,
- 11:54Speaker 3: big positive results with some drugs that are extending life expectancy,
- 12:00Speaker 3: and a lot of positive work in immunotherapy. So there's
- 12:03Speaker 3: a lot of things happening. And what we've been doing
- 12:06Speaker 3: for over twenty years now is funding seed grants, which
- 12:11Speaker 3: are little small grants up to seventy five thousand dollars
- 12:14Speaker 3: that we give to a young investigator who's got a
- 12:16Speaker 3: novel idea that they want to pursue. But you really
- 12:20Speaker 3: need money in order to pursue pursue research, and you
- 12:25Speaker 3: need to do your research in order to get the
- 12:27Speaker 3: real money which comes from NIH. So these SE Grant
- 12:31Speaker 3: awards that we've been giving out for years have really
- 12:34Speaker 3: produced phenomenal results. I mean just in the personnel of
- 12:39Speaker 3: the SEA Grant recipients who are now running major cancer,
- 12:43Speaker 3: major pancratic cancer programs at institutions around the country, to
- 12:49Speaker 3: patient care and all of the various accomplishments that these
- 12:53Speaker 3: SEA Grant recipients have been able to do and to
- 12:56Speaker 3: be able to still be engaged in still want to
- 13:00Speaker 3: be working in pankcredic cancer and still finding working, you know,
- 13:05Speaker 3: so hard to find a cure.
- 13:06Speaker 2: But also we talked about this before, Lisa, how your
- 13:09Speaker 2: organization has also made strides in earlier detection of pan
- 13:13Speaker 2: credic cancer.
- 13:14Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean there's so much we know now that
- 13:16Speaker 3: we didn't know no gosh, of course, and even things
- 13:21Speaker 3: like genetic testing was something that wasn't talked about and
- 13:25Speaker 3: now is a common thing that we talk about. I mean, immunotherapy,
- 13:29Speaker 3: customized therapies. I mean, there's there's been so so much
- 13:33Speaker 3: work that's been done that it's just really it's exciting.
- 13:37Speaker 3: It's a good.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Time to put money into fighting cancer.
- 13:39Speaker 3: You'll be finding. Yeah. Yeah, especially especially after the last
- 13:44Speaker 3: year where there was a lot of a lot of cuts.
- 13:48Speaker 3: It really impacted twenty twenty five. So you know, the
- 13:53Speaker 3: researchers that we fund just you know, we're holding on
- 13:56Speaker 3: to keep on going. And when you cut a researcher
- 14:00Speaker 3: and stop their work, not just stopping you know it
- 14:04Speaker 3: for a week or a month, you're setting back that
- 14:06Speaker 3: work years and years. So the cuts are not you know,
- 14:11Speaker 3: just like a temporary Oh I'm not going to be
- 14:14Speaker 3: able to do this work for a month. Oh no,
- 14:17Speaker 3: it has longstanding implications. So yeah, So it's been twenty
- 14:23Speaker 3: twenty six has definitely been more positive on that front.
- 14:27Speaker 3: And again it's you know, we're so lucky that we're
- 14:30Speaker 3: able to raise so much money at toward a peer
- 14:33Speaker 3: for all three cancer charities, and we're we're really lucky
- 14:37Speaker 3: that it's quite unique that this event is put on
- 14:40Speaker 3: by three cancer charities. I mean, we we do it
- 14:44Speaker 3: ourselves and we work together, and.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Usually charities don't like to share. Usually charities don't like
- 14:50Speaker 2: to share it, so thank you for sharing.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Yeah, But they're all special groups, special people, so and
- 14:57Speaker 3: it allows it allows us to you know, to connect
- 15:01Speaker 3: with people who we you know, wouldn't have had the
- 15:04Speaker 3: opportunity to because maybe they haven't been impacted by Paying
- 15:07Speaker 3: Credit Cancer. But they'll know we're here. And it's the
- 15:10Speaker 3: same thing for the other organizations. You know we're here,
- 15:13Speaker 3: why when they need them hopefully they hopefully you won't
- 15:16Speaker 3: and hopefully there will be a cure. We feel like
- 15:18Speaker 3: it is it is a common.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Well to know this money this hopefully this million dollars
- 15:23Speaker 2: we're going to raise at tour to Pier next Sunday morning,
- 15:25Speaker 2: May seventeenth, right there at the pier, Manhattan Beach Pier.
- 15:29Speaker 2: We know now it is definitely making a difference every
- 15:31Speaker 2: single year with proceeds going to, like Lisa said, Hirstburg
- 15:34Speaker 2: Foundation for Paying Credit Cancer Research, Cancer Support Community South Bay,
- 15:38Speaker 2: and the Uncle Corey Foundation for Brain Cancer Research.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Hopefully you'll be able to get get a team together
- 15:44Speaker 1: a U plus four.
- 15:45Speaker 2: We know you got four friends to join thousands who
- 15:48Speaker 2: are coming together and spend they'll be spending their little
- 15:50Speaker 2: hearts out for a couple hours at three hundred plus
- 15:52Speaker 2: stationary spin bikes right there on the beach.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Thousands coming together.
- 15:56Speaker 2: If it's not sold out, you can grab your U
- 15:58Speaker 2: plus four and spin do the spinning, or just show
- 16:01Speaker 2: up and be a part of it. You can pop
- 16:03Speaker 2: on the website and make a donation. I always usually
- 16:05Speaker 2: donate to Lisa Manheim her team. Thank you and come
- 16:08Speaker 2: out and be a part of the vibe and you know,
- 16:11Speaker 2: bring your family and come hang and enjoy the free
- 16:14Speaker 2: health and fitness expo and kid zone, all that things
- 16:17Speaker 2: to eat, drink, sample while we cheer on the writers,
- 16:20Speaker 2: the spinners and be a part of this whole, very
- 16:23Speaker 2: special day in hopes of raising a million plus dollars
- 16:26Speaker 2: to fight cancer. Fourteen Daniel Tour to Peer next Sunday morning,
- 16:29Speaker 2: bright and early, May seventeenth, Manhattan Beach, Peer tourdpeer dot
- 16:33Speaker 2: com for all the info, Lisa Manheim, thank you so

- 16:40Speaker 3: Thank you, thank you so much. Appreciate it.
