- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 110, Psalm
- 0:19110, and this is a Psalm of David.
- 0:22It is an incredible portion of Scripture that from the Old
- 0:26Testament is one of the clearest indications of the coming
- 0:30Messiah. So when you think about the Old
- 0:33Testament and you think about what is said, especially in the
- 0:37Gospels, in the New Testament about Jesus, there seems to be a
- 0:41little bit of a disconnect between what the children of
- 0:44Israel thought would happen and what actually did happen.
- 0:50And so the question has been all right, Is it because they just
- 0:53didn't understand the word of God?
- 0:55Is it because the path that Jesus was going to walk, who he
- 1:00was, everything in relation to him like that was hidden from
- 1:04them all? All of that, all of those
- 1:07questions come into play. And So what we're going to look
- 1:10at today is a really, really clear indication from Psalm 110
- 1:16that Jesus was always intended to be both man and God, that
- 1:22this was known by David, this was preached by the disciples.
- 1:29And we'll look at three different portions of scripture
- 1:33in the New Testament that talk about this particular passage,
- 1:37actually ones that we have already gone through in our time
- 1:41on Tabernacle Talk. And so I'll connect those
- 1:43episodes there as well. But this is just an amazing
- 1:47Psalm. So I'll read it.
- 1:48I'll look at maybe what David would have been looking at
- 1:52within his own life and how that would have appeared to him.
- 1:55And then the Messianic or the the Jesus applications of this
- 2:00passage, Psalm 110 and verse one.
- 2:03This is the declaration of Yahweh to my Lord.
- 2:07Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your
- 2:11footstool. Yahweh will extend your mighty
- 2:14scepter from Zion. Rule over your surrounding
- 2:18enemies. Your people will volunteer on
- 2:20your day of battle in holy splendor.
- 2:23From the womb of the dawn, the dew of your youth belongs to
- 2:27you. Yahweh has sworn an oath and
- 2:30will not take it back. You are a priest forever.
- 2:34According to the pattern of Melchizedek.
- 2:38The Lord is at your right hand. He will crush kings on the day
- 2:41of his anger. He will judge the nation's
- 2:44keeping up courses. He will crush leaders over the
- 2:47entire world. He will drink from the brook by
- 2:50the road. Therefore, he will lift up his
- 2:53head. All right, You hear that?
- 2:56You're like, man, that was all over the place.
- 2:58What is happening? Well, let's look first at what
- 3:02David here would have been talking about here.
- 3:06There is really from the first an understanding that David is
- 3:12talking about a future ruler that the Kingdom that God has
- 3:16promised to David. David knows I'm not going to be
- 3:20here forever. God has promised that one from
- 3:22my household will reign on this throne forever.
- 3:26You can read about that in Second Samuel Chapter 7.
- 3:29And so he says, because God has promised that I am making, I am
- 3:35talking about the declaration of God to this person.
- 3:40And here David calls this person from his lineage that God is
- 3:46making this declaration to. He calls this person my Lord, my
- 3:51Adonai, my Master, the one in charge of my life.
- 3:56And so he says, this is what Yahweh says to the one who is
- 4:00the Master, the Lord. And David says, this is my my
- 4:05Lord. This is the declaration of the
- 4:08Lord Yahweh to my Lord. So here there's a difference
- 4:12between these individuals, but there's something really,
- 4:15really, really special about this.
- 4:17Who later Jewish individuals would call this individual the
- 4:22Messiah. It comes from the Hebrew word
- 4:25mashiac. It's the anointed 1.
- 4:28And so this is what God is saying to the Messiah.
- 4:33And he starts off in verse #1 sit at my right hand until I
- 4:36make your enemies your footstool.
- 4:39That is, God is going to give the Kingdom to this individual,
- 4:44and He will give this individual the Kingdom when God has subdued
- 4:50all of his enemies. And what a joy that Jesus, He is
- 4:56one that He didn't come to this earth to fight us, to destroy
- 5:03us, to come and conquer us by force.
- 5:06Instead, he laid down his life. And in his death for our sin,
- 5:11and in his burial and in his resurrection, he has shown
- 5:15himself to be worthy of all of our praise.
- 5:18He has shown himself to be God. And so as a result, he's worthy
- 5:23of our adoration and our worship.
- 5:25But the Lord has said that right now he is working to subdue all
- 5:30the enemies of Christ, that all of them would be his footstool.
- 5:34It's something that you rest your feet on.
- 5:36I don't know if you guys have siblings.
- 5:39I have three younger siblings. And so certainly there would be
- 5:41times, you know, you you'd sit in a chair and you'd, you know,
- 5:44rest your feet on someone. I'm sure there's a Disney movie
- 5:47or something where some tyrant king has someone else that's
- 5:51sitting under and it just makes it so your feet don't have to go
- 5:53all the way to the floor. You can kind of recline a little
- 5:56bit. And God says, I'm making you a
- 5:58recliner, Jesus. And the, the footstool, the foot
- 6:02portion, the thing that's lifting you up is even your
- 6:05enemies. And I think about what we
- 6:07learned a couple months ago in Ephesians, that we were the
- 6:13enemies of God. I was an enemy of God.
- 6:16And now I, who was the enemy of Christ, of the Messiah, Now I
- 6:19have been made his footstool, that I am there to serve King
- 6:23Jesus. And I think man, I don't know
- 6:27that David knew this. He might have given what we read
- 6:30in Psalm 22, but Jesus's feet are nail scarred and for all of
- 6:37eternity, he, he bears these wounds for us that we see him
- 6:42who we have pierced, but he was pierced for us.
- 6:47And the fact that we as humanity inflicted those wounds on him,
- 6:51it didn't make him run away, but instead it made him like love us
- 6:56and forgive us. And he said Father forgive them
- 6:58because they don't know what they're doing and owed to be a
- 7:02footstool for nail scarred feet that were pierced for me.
- 7:08I I love that thought. So God is is the one that he is
- 7:13exercising dominion over the enemies of Jesus so that the
- 7:17Kingdom is delivered to him. And certainly Jesus himself will
- 7:21land that final blow at the Battle of Armageddon.
- 7:25But you can read in First Corinthians 15 when Paul talks
- 7:29about this portion at length and he says that the last enemy that
- 7:36will be defeated is death, and that as all of creation is
- 7:41subjected to Jesus, then Jesus delivers it to the Father.
- 7:44And he says, look, what if you will, look what we have done and
- 7:49what, what a joy that the unity of our God, our triune God makes
- 7:56it so that they are loving and, and generous and giving to one
- 7:59another and exalting of each other.
- 8:02And that's how we're called to interact with one another, that
- 8:05we're called to encourage each other and lift each other up and
- 8:08do things for each other and give gifts to one another
- 8:11because that's even what our Triune God does.
- 8:14All right, that's verse #1 I promise not all of these verses
- 8:17have as much packed into them as as that first verse does.
- 8:23Verse #2 Yahweh will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, rule
- 8:27over your surrounding enemies, that the Messiah would reign not
- 8:30just over Israel, but over all of here, the surrounding
- 8:35enemies. And then we'll read at the end,
- 8:37over all of the world, Jesus will reign.
- 8:41There's a great old hymn, I can't remember offhand who wrote
- 8:45it. Seems like something Isaac Watts
- 8:47would have likely written. Jesus will reign.
- 8:50Where are the sun does its successive journeys run?
- 8:54His Kingdom spread from shore to shore, till wound, till moons
- 8:59shall wax and wane no more. That's got a little bit older
- 9:03language, so I got tongue tied a little bit.
- 9:04I will throw Jesus shall reign in the in the show notes.
- 9:08There's a great version done by the music group Enfield that
- 9:12they wrote a little chorus. He shall reign with glory,
- 9:15crowned with grace and love. Bless his name and praise the
- 9:18sovereign King. He shall reign forever with his
- 9:21chosen bride, and all the earth shall sing that Jesus is the
- 9:24King. Love, love that song verse #3 I
- 9:28love this verse. He says your people will
- 9:31volunteer on your day of battle and holy splendor from the womb
- 9:35of the dawn. That's the very beginning of the
- 9:37morning at earliest light. The dew of your youth belongs to
- 9:42you. What's being said here is that
- 9:45Jesus's people, the Messiah's people, they will be eager to
- 9:49fight for him. They will be happy to join in
- 9:53what He is doing now. The Jewish people certainly
- 9:56thought about what we would think of as the day of
- 9:59Armageddon, what's often called the day of the Lord in the
- 10:03prophets. But here I I think of what Jesus
- 10:07has actually done for us and what he has called for us to do.
- 10:11And it is you are called to fight a battle today, but it's
- 10:15not a battle of swords or guns or political domination over
- 10:20someone else. No, you have been called to
- 10:23fight the holy fight, putting on the spiritual armor of God, that
- 10:27as you have the breastplate of righteousness, the helmet of
- 10:30salvation, the belt of truth, the sword of the spirit, the
- 10:34shield of faith, your feet shod with the preparation of the
- 10:37gospel of peace, as you have that Holy Spirit armor on.
- 10:41And you fight against Satan and you fight for the souls of
- 10:44mankind and you fight against what Satan is trying to do in,
- 10:47in discouraging and disarming and disheartening God's people
- 10:52that you venture into battle against the spiritual forces of
- 10:56wickedness. And we are to be the volunteers
- 11:00in that battle. May God not have to like drag us
- 11:03into conscription to say, listen, you're a Christian.
- 11:07I saved you. I saved you from hell.
- 11:09I put you into my Kingdom. I gave you, I give you the
- 11:12church, I give you your brothers and sisters and the Lord.
- 11:14Will you please do something? Will you please engage in this
- 11:18battle? May we volunteer from here, the
- 11:21womb of the dawn, from from the break of dawn, may we say, God,
- 11:25I want to do what you have called me to do today.
- 11:29Verse #4 Yahweh has sworn an oath and will not take it back.
- 11:34You are a priest forever, according to the pattern of
- 11:38Melchizedek. This is something that would
- 11:43have struck Israel as really, really weird.
- 11:47Kings were not priests. No one from Davidde lineage
- 11:51could ever be a priest. Not in the Aaronic priesthood.
- 11:55Well we went through at the end of last year the book of Hebrews
- 11:59where over and over and over again the writer of Hebrews
- 12:04references this verse to say Jesus was a priest and he wasn't
- 12:10like the fallen sinful evil priest like Israel had.
- 12:15Instead Jesus was a perfect priest.
- 12:18He was the priest that did not have father or mother, like
- 12:23Melchizedek did not have father and mother, and like Melchizedek
- 12:27endured forever. So Jesus endured forever.
- 12:30If you have questions about that, you can go look over at
- 12:33especially any of the Tabernacle talk episodes on Hebrews 7 and
- 12:398. It might be Hebrews 6 through 8
- 12:42deal with that at length and so you can look over at that.
- 12:47So here Yahweh says to the Messiah that you are a priest
- 12:53forever. I actually read a a great little
- 12:56book called Prophet, Priest and King by Doctor Al Mohler from
- 13:02Southern Baptist Theological Seminary last week.
- 13:05At the time of my recording and that book in particular, the
- 13:09best section of it was the section on the priesthood and
- 13:14who Jesus is. For us, a priest is one that
- 13:17goes between the people and God. He's the one that makes
- 13:20sacrifice so that the God does not destroy the people for their
- 13:24wickedness. And he's the person that takes
- 13:27gifts from the people to God to thank him and to glorify him.
- 13:32And yes, Jesus is all of those things.
- 13:34Jesus is the one that prays for us, that intercedes for us as a
- 13:38perfect priest does, and He is the one that is our model in
- 13:43his, in his prayer life and in his worship for how we are
- 13:48priests. We are a Kingdom of priests, as
- 13:50Peter tells us in First Peter Two.
- 13:52We are mirroring what the children of Israel were supposed
- 13:56to be, which was a Kingdom of holy priests and you can read
- 13:58about that in the book of Exodus.
- 14:01So here Yahweh says to the Messiah, you are a priest
- 14:04forever according to the pattern of Melchizedek.
- 14:07And can I tell you, your high priest will never fail you.
- 14:11His sacrifice will always be acceptable.
- 14:13There will never be a day when God's like that sacrifice wasn't
- 14:17very good today or it didn't get put in on time, or that was the
- 14:20wrong sacrifice and so you are going to be condemned.
- 14:23No, Jesus, our perfect high priest, makes it so that always
- 14:28and forever we are justified before our God and he prays for
- 14:33us before the Father, and he denounces Satan's accusations
- 14:37against us. We have a great high priest.
- 14:42Then verse 5 through 7 says the Lord is at your right hand.
- 14:47He will crush kings on the day of his anger.
- 14:49He'll judge the nation's heaping up courses corpses.
- 14:53He will crush leaders over the entire world.
- 14:57You might, as I might. When we read these verses, we're
- 15:01thinking of evil doers, like a Hitler or Stalin or Mao Zedong,
- 15:08and we go, oh, well, I don't really like the way that those
- 15:11words make me feel. No, no, no.
- 15:13Think about the And again, this is imperfect because humans are
- 15:17imperfect. But think about the Allies
- 15:23coming and destroying the evil Axis powers.
- 15:27Think about those that have liberated and freed people from
- 15:32oppressive rulers. And here that is what is being
- 15:36said, that Jesus, he conquers evil, sinful, oppressive, wicked
- 15:41rulers and instead God's good reign and rule.
- 15:46They they cover the entire Earth now the Anniverse 6th.
- 15:50There he will crush leaders over the entire world.
- 15:53This will of course ultimately take place at Armageddon.
- 15:57But I think over the course of human history you can even think
- 16:00back to the barbaric actions that used to just be normal and
- 16:05commonplace in the world. But as even Christianity itself
- 16:09has shaped the global mindset of what is right and wrong and how
- 16:14lives are to be valued and to be cared for, Christians were ones
- 16:19that helped make many of the hospitals in the Roman Empire in
- 16:24the first couple centuries after Christ.
- 16:26You can think about the effect that Christianity had even on
- 16:29sexual ethics of care and love and consent and appreciation.
- 16:34All of that came out of the Christian mindset that the
- 16:39marriage relationship is to be a picture of the love of Christ
- 16:43and His church. And so Jesus, even to this
- 16:48point, has crushed leaders over and over and over again.
- 16:53And though this world is still very imperfect, very sin flawed,
- 16:58there will come a day when Jesus makes all things right.
- 17:02Then verse #7 He will drink from the brook by the road.
- 17:06Therefore, he will lift up his head.
- 17:11When you think about that portion, it's talking about the
- 17:15drinking from the brook by the road.
- 17:17Solomon, as he is going to his coronation, he drinks from the
- 17:22brook Gehan. So you would drink from the
- 17:26Gehan Spring as part of an enthronement ceremony.
- 17:29So that is in his coronation, He is recognized by that.
- 17:34And also you only drink when your enemies are defeated, when
- 17:38you have time and space and safety to be able to do that.
- 17:42And so that is what Jesus does in his victory.
- 17:46He is able to have simple refreshing.
- 17:49So with all of that being said, what a amazing Psalm.
- 17:56And I hope that some of these thoughts would be an
- 17:58encouragement to you today. That it would come for your
- 18:00heart. Knowing you have a great high
- 18:02priest. Knowing that you have the king
- 18:03that will crush all evil. That you are to be a person that
- 18:07volunteers for the work that he does.
- 18:10That you would want to be the footstool of the pierced feet
- 18:15that were pierced for you and knowing that your God is just
- 18:19and that there is a judgment day coming.
- 18:21Turn to Jesus, worship him, serve him, follow him, tell
- 18:26other people about Him because the day is coming when there
- 18:29will be no more opportunity to turn to Him.
- 18:32So turn to Him now while there is still time.
- 18:36Thanks for tuning in. Looking forward to next week and
- 18:38Psalm 111.
