- 1:10Speaker 1: Jeff Legwall brought to you by the International Brotherhood of
- 1:13Speaker 1: Electrical Workers IBEW Local sixty eight. You start with a
- 1:16Speaker 1: job and you end with a career, leggy you before
- 1:21Speaker 1: we get to a coaching hire, let's get to the
- 1:23Speaker 1: sexier stuff. You took a pretty deep dive into the
- 1:28Speaker 1: Broncos need to upgrade at the wide receiver position and
- 1:33Speaker 1: what they could go looking to do. Right there, Courtland
- 1:37Speaker 1: Sutton brilliant this season, a couple of young guys coming up,
- 1:41Speaker 1: and Marvin Mim sort of finding his role over the
- 1:44Speaker 1: back half of the season. Before we even get to names, though,
- 1:48Speaker 1: draw out for me a profile of the kind of
- 1:53Speaker 1: wide receiver that this offense would do well to add.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Well.
- 1:58Speaker 3: I mean, name Sean Payton's made no secret he wants
- 2:02Speaker 3: them big, like very big, like I think in a
- 2:06Speaker 3: perfect world. You know, Mimes doesn't really fit his profile,
- 2:11Speaker 3: and you know he's never said this out loud, so
- 2:13Speaker 3: I don't want to speak for him, but I think
- 2:16Speaker 3: in some ways that's why Marvin Mims has been slower
- 2:20Speaker 3: into the lineup than his production would seem to indicate
- 2:24Speaker 3: to me. And I think, you know, upgrade at wide
- 2:29Speaker 3: receiver could simply mean they play Marvin more more efficiently
- 2:35Speaker 3: and figure out how to use him.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I think that.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Could be an upgrade too, And you know they do.
- 2:44Speaker 3: They think Franklin will be more involved next year. What's
- 2:47Speaker 3: that look like? But I think they will look at
- 2:50Speaker 3: some of the big framed guys in the draft, because again,
- 2:55Speaker 3: that's one position. Even in a what's considered a generally
- 2:58Speaker 3: weak board. Uh, you can find wide receiver help in
- 3:03Speaker 3: the draft. And Devon Vley is proof of that is
- 3:07Speaker 3: all a proof you need. I mean, look where they
- 3:09Speaker 3: look where they got to Von Vley in the draft
- 3:11Speaker 3: last year. Look at his production and h he's a
- 3:15Speaker 3: different type of prospect too.
- 3:18Speaker 2: That's another reason you got to.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Look at least a little bit because you know, he
- 3:22Speaker 3: was twenty six when he got here. He'll be twenty seven,
- 3:25Speaker 3: you know when the season starts, so he's already down
- 3:29Speaker 3: the road a bit.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Sean Payton likes big wide receivers six foot four two
- 3:35Speaker 1: and twenty pounds. Let's talk about T Higgins. That's an
- 3:38Speaker 1: awfully big wide receiver that's also going to be an
- 3:41Speaker 1: awfully big paycheck that he is going to require on
- 3:45Speaker 1: the open market. If Joe Burrow is not able to
- 3:48Speaker 1: convince Bengals management to redo everybody's contract. Does t Higgins
- 3:53Speaker 1: fit the mold?
- 3:55Speaker 3: He certainly does, and every you know, I think people
- 3:57Speaker 3: in the league know Sean Payton likes him an off
- 4:00Speaker 3: a lot.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Of very complimentary things to say about him. After Denver
- 4:03Speaker 1: played Cincinnati and he killed him that day.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I think he's probably the only Bengal player
- 4:09Speaker 3: Sean Payton actually approached after the game on the field,
- 4:12Speaker 3: So you know, uh, you know, I think it was
- 4:16Speaker 3: the old Hey, how's it going, But you know, but.
- 4:19Speaker 2: It is what it is.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I mean, business card.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I didn't see him seek out many of
- 4:24Speaker 3: other you know, players throughout the year like that. But
- 4:29Speaker 3: you know, maybe maybe it's the old you do the
- 4:32Speaker 3: look away fly by so you're not talking directly at him.
- 4:35Speaker 2: And you know, my owners are the richest in the league,
- 4:37Speaker 2: you know.
- 4:38Speaker 1: You know what that is. That's an early start to
- 4:40Speaker 1: the legal tampering period, That's what that is.
- 4:43Speaker 3: But I think everyone I know in the league believes
- 4:47Speaker 3: the Bengals will likely franchise Higgins or at least really
- 4:51Speaker 3: think about it.
- 4:52Speaker 2: It's not that.
- 4:53Speaker 3: They've been in the past before Jamar Chase, before Joe Burrow,
- 4:58Speaker 3: much of the time. They've been a little slow to
- 5:01Speaker 3: react on the contract side because they're a family run team.
- 5:05Speaker 3: They don't have the resources a lot of other people do.
- 5:09Speaker 3: So that is one worth watching. But people in the
- 5:12Speaker 3: league still think t Higgins will get the tag and
- 5:15Speaker 3: then it'll be, you know, at cat fight in Cincinnati,
- 5:18Speaker 3: because he isn't gonna like that, and you know they'll
- 5:21Speaker 3: go from there. But I think that's where it stands
- 5:24Speaker 3: right now. But he certainly fits what he likes.
- 5:28Speaker 4: So our friend Kay Adams haven't sewn on and talked
- 5:32Speaker 4: to them last week, as you well know, and then
- 5:34Speaker 4: Kay Adams comes out this week. We played the audio
- 5:37Speaker 4: yesterday saying that the Broncos could be like the Eagles,
- 5:41Speaker 4: and the Eagles have unlocked the key to the Chiefs,
- 5:43Speaker 4: which you know, hey, I'm fine if that's the case.
- 5:46Speaker 4: But Jeff, you made it real clear when we talked
- 5:48Speaker 4: to you the day after the Super Bowl that the
- 5:51Speaker 4: Eagles are a draft built team. Maybe a couple savvy
- 5:54Speaker 4: trades in there as well, but they're a draft built team.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Who do you think team starters?
- 5:59Speaker 3: And he fifteen starters for the Eagles in the Super
- 6:03Speaker 3: Bowl out of the draft.
- 6:05Speaker 4: So who do you think will there be a shit
- 6:07Speaker 4: I don't know if showdown's the right word, but will
- 6:09Speaker 4: there be a little bit of a staring contest between Peyton,
- 6:14Speaker 4: Sean Payton and George Peyton over what we do because again,
- 6:17Speaker 4: thirty million doesn't seem like what George Payton was talking
- 6:20Speaker 4: about at the end of the year.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:23Speaker 3: I just think you know that the key the unlocking
- 6:27Speaker 3: is not a secret the best. You know, the Chiefs
- 6:30Speaker 3: the year before started sixteen of their own draft guys
- 6:35Speaker 3: in the Super Bowl, including both teams quarterbacks. I mean,
- 6:38Speaker 3: the draft is is where the successful teams are going,
- 6:43Speaker 3: and then you use free agency for the frosting on
- 6:46Speaker 3: the cake, as it were.
- 6:48Speaker 2: You get Barkley and.
- 6:49Speaker 3: He asked, one of the greatest running back seasons ever.
- 6:53Speaker 3: But to say that Eagles of unlocked something secret, I think, yeah,
- 6:59Speaker 3: people haven't been paying attention to the last you know,
- 7:02Speaker 3: to what the Chiefs have done with a draft build team,
- 7:04Speaker 3: to what the Ravens do annually with a draft built team.
- 7:09Speaker 2: That is the secret.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Yes, and if they're gonna look like the Eagles, they're
- 7:13Speaker 3: gonna have to run the ball hell of a lot
- 7:14Speaker 3: more than they have been. So I think that's also
- 7:17Speaker 3: something to consider.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald is brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 7:21Speaker 1: of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. Start with a
- 7:24Speaker 1: job and with a career, like you, we did some
- 7:27Speaker 1: of it this week. Everybody does it? Okay, Philadelphia Eagles
- 7:30Speaker 1: just won a Super Bowl? So what what did they
- 7:32Speaker 1: do that everybody else can take? And you know who
- 7:34Speaker 1: else does this stuff? Every single owner around the NFL
- 7:37Speaker 1: who is asking their general manager, how do we do
- 7:39Speaker 1: what they just did? And I feel like one of
- 7:42Speaker 1: the questions is going to get asked is oh, is
- 7:46Speaker 1: this now a renaissance for running backs on the open
- 7:50Speaker 1: market and their paychecks? Because Saquon Barkley and Philly Derrick
- 7:56Speaker 1: Henry in Baltimore. I think the thing that a lot
- 7:58Speaker 1: of people are forgetting is though those teams were already
- 8:00Speaker 1: awesome and then they added great running backs. Yeah, but
- 8:05Speaker 1: for Najie Harris, for Rico Doubtel, this upcoming offseason, for
- 8:11Speaker 1: Nick chubbho I think has a chance of being available,
- 8:14Speaker 1: like Aaron Jones. What's the market going to look like
- 8:18Speaker 1: for running backs? Are these guys going to benefit from
- 8:20Speaker 1: what Barkley and Henry did this year?
- 8:23Speaker 3: I think they'll benefit Nate because that's just the way
- 8:25Speaker 3: it works. Because and I think people slowly in the league,
- 8:30Speaker 3: play callers notoriously want to look smart and look innovative
- 8:35Speaker 3: because that's the pressure they get from owners, from fans.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Better to lose ugly than win, or lose lose pretty
- 8:43Speaker 3: than win ugly, is often the play calling mantra around
- 8:47Speaker 3: the league. But it will help those backs. And I
- 8:50Speaker 3: think Aaron Jones is certainly somebody that Broncos should look at.
- 8:53Speaker 3: He fits that runner receiver mode. But none of those
- 8:58Speaker 3: guys are Henry or Barkley in terms of talent and
- 9:02Speaker 3: production over the long haul. So you know, I think
- 9:05Speaker 3: that's the top of the market, those two guys. And
- 9:09Speaker 3: I don't think it changes the actuarial tables on thirty
- 9:13Speaker 3: year old running backs. You know, Raheem most are another
- 9:16Speaker 3: thirty you know, a thirty two year old running back
- 9:20Speaker 3: now in the open market today, So you know, it
- 9:25Speaker 3: helps them. But I don't think anyone in the league
- 9:28Speaker 3: looks at this group and says there's a Barkley or
- 9:30Speaker 3: a Derrick Henry in there.
- 9:33Speaker 4: All right, I asked you the beginning of the week
- 9:35Speaker 4: about Deebo Samuel would it makes sense. You've talked about
- 9:37Speaker 4: the contract that comes with the ugly voidable years now.
- 9:41Speaker 4: There's rumors on the internet maybe they just release him.
- 9:45Speaker 4: If he is released, you have a different feeling about
- 9:47Speaker 4: the Broncos chatting with him.
- 9:50Speaker 2: You know, I think my feeling's the same.
- 9:52Speaker 3: I think they're going to want to know where he's at,
- 9:55Speaker 3: you know, in terms of what's the number, you know,
- 9:57Speaker 3: what's it look like, and you know that the combine
- 10:02Speaker 3: a lot of things get discussed, and you know that
- 10:04Speaker 3: certainly will be a topic going around Indy the whole time.
- 10:09Speaker 3: I think the feeling that they might release him is
- 10:12Speaker 3: just simply based on the cap pain is roughly the
- 10:16Speaker 3: same either way. So people are making the jump. Well,
- 10:21Speaker 3: you know, if they're willing to if they're willing to
- 10:23Speaker 3: trade him and take the hit, then they're willing to
- 10:25Speaker 3: release him and take the hit. Now they want something
- 10:28Speaker 3: for him. John Lynch wants something in return if he's
- 10:32Speaker 3: got to give up Deebo Samuel. So I'm not to
- 10:35Speaker 3: the point where I think they're really going to release
- 10:38Speaker 3: him or any of that.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Now. Maybe that changes after.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I roam Indy for a week, but we'll we'll see
- 10:44Speaker 3: but knowing John Lynch for a very long time, I
- 10:48Speaker 3: don't think he's sitting in his chair right now going yeah,
- 10:51Speaker 3: we could just release him and it's the same.
- 10:54Speaker 2: He's not going to feel that way.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Keep it on the theme of again copying off what Philadelphia
- 10:59Speaker 1: likes to do, rush four, drop seven again. I'm pretty
- 11:04Speaker 1: sure that there's a lot of people around the NFL
- 11:05Speaker 1: that are going, well, if you're gonna rush four, there's
- 11:07Speaker 1: nobody better to add to your team than Miles Garrett did.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Perhaps that Super Bowl performance Legie did that maybe put
- 11:15Speaker 1: some more teams on the Miles Garrett Chase.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I don't know that a lot of
- 11:21Speaker 3: people have played as disciplined a look as Vic Fangio
- 11:26Speaker 3: does for as long a time.
- 11:27Speaker 2: That ain't easy to do what he did and.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Still disguise coverage and still be assignment sound. I mean,
- 11:35Speaker 3: those two things don't go together. It's very complicated, very
- 11:40Speaker 3: difficult to play. Uh, It's very very difficult to consistently
- 11:45Speaker 3: give quarterbacks a muddy picture to look at. So the
- 11:49Speaker 3: degree of difficulty makes that hard to duplicate. But the
- 11:54Speaker 3: rush fourth thing is always the goal, even.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Ones, even if.
- 12:01Speaker 3: You're simulating pressure. You know, you don't tell them what
- 12:03Speaker 3: for you're Russian. But if you can get away with four,
- 12:07Speaker 3: you're gonna play really good defense. And Miles Garrett instantly
- 12:11Speaker 3: makes any team able to do that because he takes
- 12:14Speaker 3: triple teams sometimes. And but it's just, you know, it's
- 12:20Speaker 3: really difficult for them to trade him to a lot
- 12:24Speaker 3: of places just because of the way the contract is,
- 12:27Speaker 3: the cap you know, the cap space, you need to
- 12:30Speaker 3: do it. But yeah, that'll be interest's he's too good.
- 12:35Speaker 3: But I can't imagine the Browns are too excited about
- 12:38Speaker 3: the prospect.
- 12:39Speaker 2: And you know, I think they're hoping.
- 12:42Speaker 3: I know some folks there, and I think they're hoping
- 12:44Speaker 3: that they can show him. Okay, we're making some moves,
- 12:49Speaker 3: we're doing what we can. You know, are you willing
- 12:53Speaker 3: to ride along with us a little bit, you know,
- 12:56Speaker 3: one more year maybe or whatever they got to do.
- 13:00Speaker 2: He's their best player and to give up your.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Best fu unbelievable.
- 13:05Speaker 3: And I don't think in this environment you're gonna get
- 13:08Speaker 3: Khalil mack return for him, And that to me, if
- 13:12Speaker 3: you can't get that, then you're gonna end up looking stupid.
- 13:17Speaker 4: All right, let's continue a little bit with the Eagles theme,
- 13:19Speaker 4: but more draft based. Okay, I don't know that the
- 13:22Speaker 4: Broncos would do this, it would be a surprise, but
- 13:24Speaker 4: there is word that this is a strong defensive line class.
- 13:28Speaker 4: The Eagles drafted that.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Defensive line legy.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Now the Broncos haven't done that, but the guys are
- 13:33Speaker 4: playing well. Could we get shocked and could there be
- 13:36Speaker 4: a defensive lineman that gets picked by the Broncos. It
- 13:39Speaker 4: would be a good addition. Is there a guy that
- 13:41Speaker 4: you're excited to go watch the combine?
- 13:44Speaker 3: Well, it's a really good class overall, and you can
- 13:46Speaker 3: pick any number of names down in the you know,
- 13:49Speaker 3: in the twenties and into the second round. It was
- 13:52Speaker 3: one of the probably the strongest position overall at the
- 13:55Speaker 3: Senior Bowl too. So there are a lot of people,
- 13:59Speaker 3: you know, there are names in free agency they could look.
- 14:02Speaker 2: At as well. But they need a defensive tackle.
- 14:04Speaker 3: They need an impact guy in the middle, and I
- 14:07Speaker 3: think they'll be looking for that, whether that's a draft
- 14:11Speaker 3: player or one of their free agency signings. Could well
- 14:15Speaker 3: be in the defensive front. Uh So, I think that
- 14:18Speaker 3: is a position to keep an eye on for sure.
- 14:20Speaker 3: And you know, I think if you're going to be
- 14:23Speaker 3: really good, you got to be willing to you know,
- 14:25Speaker 3: quote unquote shock people in the first round and take
- 14:29Speaker 3: a non skill player once in a while. That should
- 14:32Speaker 3: be the lesson from the Eagles. Look at look at
- 14:35Speaker 3: the and even the Chiefs. Look at the draft capital
- 14:38Speaker 3: they expended to make the big guys better. Uh So
- 14:43Speaker 3: I always think you shouldn't. You shouldn't just make the
- 14:46Speaker 3: first and second round. You know, Day one and two
- 14:49Speaker 3: shouldn't just be the skill player zone. It should be
- 14:53Speaker 3: get really good players who help you immediately. And history
- 14:58Speaker 3: has shown defensive lineman immediately and that is always a
- 15:02Speaker 3: good place to go early in the draft.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Like you take us through the hiring of Darren Rizzy
- 15:07Speaker 1: as the Broncos new special teams coordinator, not terribly surprising
- 15:13Speaker 1: another New Orleans reunion here in Denver, but specifically tell
- 15:18Speaker 1: us about Darren Rizzy and what impact he should have
- 15:20Speaker 1: on the Broncos special teams.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Well, he just brings the familiarity that you know, he
- 15:25Speaker 3: was on Peyton's staff for three of his ears in
- 15:28Speaker 3: New Orleans were with Peyton. And you know it was weird.
- 15:32Speaker 3: I know some of the New Orleans Saints coaches and
- 15:35Speaker 3: they were in this weird limbo. Many of them were
- 15:40Speaker 3: waiting to hear their fate, you know. Now you know
- 15:42Speaker 3: Kubiak has gone to Seattle, they allowed him to do that,
- 15:46Speaker 3: but some of the guys were sort of in this
- 15:49Speaker 3: weird limbo, and Rizzy was one of them. He had
- 15:52Speaker 3: been interviewed for the head coaching job as the interim,
- 15:56Speaker 3: but he was one of the guys who was kind
- 15:58Speaker 3: of caught up in the weird We got to wait
- 16:01Speaker 3: till they announce a head coach. So that's why this
- 16:05Speaker 3: kind of looked odd from the outside. It's where Sean
- 16:09Speaker 3: Payton's wanted to go. I mean, they told Chris Banjo.
- 16:13Speaker 3: I've had multiple people inside the building tell me. They
- 16:16Speaker 3: basically told Chris Banjo, we don't think you're ready for
- 16:19Speaker 3: the job, so we're looking elsewhere. And that's why he
- 16:23Speaker 3: went to the Jets. So this has been the move,
- 16:27Speaker 3: and they just had to wait for Kellen Moore to
- 16:29Speaker 3: be introduced and for Rizzy to be formally formally told
- 16:33Speaker 3: you didn't get the job, even though the rumors about
- 16:37Speaker 3: Kellen Moore were swirling, you know, forever, it seemed like.
- 16:41Speaker 3: But that's why this took a little longer than you
- 16:44Speaker 3: would have expected, but this was his top target all along.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Darren Rizzy the new special teams coach for the Denver Broncos.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Hopefully he can teach the guys how to block on
- 16:53Speaker 1: field goals. Jeff Legwaald, everybody, brought to you by the
- 16:56Speaker 1: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. You
- 17:00Speaker 1: start with a job, you end with a career. You
- 17:02Speaker 1: read Jeff Legwald at ESPN dot com. His latest is
- 17:06Speaker 1: up on the hiring of Dinnren Rizzy right now, but
- 17:08Speaker 1: a great long form piece on Sean Payton's pursuit of
- 17:11Speaker 1: wide receiver talent from this week. That was great that
- 17:13Speaker 1: you should read. Leggy, well done as always, man, Thank
- 17:16Speaker 1: you all right, the great Jeff Legwald with us right there.
