- 0:00Speaker 1: And the king said to Araunah, Nay, but I will
- 0:04Speaker 1: surely buy it of thee at a price. Neither will
- 0:07Speaker 1: I offer burnt offerings unto the Lord my God of
- 0:10Speaker 1: that which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing
- 0:14Speaker 1: floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. 2
- 0:19Speaker 1: Samuel 24 24 Dear Lord, when the abundance of your
- 0:24Speaker 1: goodness is apparent and on display in my life, I
- 0:28Speaker 1: will make sure that insecurities won't lead me into thinking
- 0:32Speaker 1: that all I have will be preserved by my own
- 0:35Speaker 1: methods and tactics. As you increase the works of my hands, Lord,
- 0:41Speaker 1: help me not to see those you've called me to
- 0:43Speaker 1: lead as commodities and not sheep you've called me to honor, protect,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and shepherd. I declare that you are my sustaining force
- 0:54Speaker 1: and the lifter of my head. Keep me from experiencing
- 0:58Speaker 1: loss and defeat as David did. I will instead look
- 1:02Speaker 1: to you and your power to cover my weak areas
- 1:05Speaker 1: when I feel insecure and inadequate. Thank you for reminding
- 1:10Speaker 1: me that my life is about serving and helping others
- 1:15Speaker 1: as I grow to become more like you. In Jesus' name.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Listening to these daily prayers strengthens your relationship with God.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Continue hearing from the Lord by listening to today's Bible
- 1:32Speaker 1: in a Year. Brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Taking Account of the People In our last story, we
- 1:50Speaker 2: witnessed the continued bravery of David even into old age.
- 1:55Speaker 2: He continued to wage war against all who would threaten
- 1:58Speaker 2: the flock of God. As a result, David became weary,
- 2:02Speaker 2: but did not lose hope in the Lord of his salvation.
- 2:05Speaker 2: In this story, we witness an odd change in the
- 2:08Speaker 2: character of David as he takes a census over the
- 2:10Speaker 2: people in order to maintain control and wealth for the nation.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Inspired by 2 Samuel.
- 2:16Speaker 3: And 1 Chronicles. We're so glad you joined us on
- 2:22Speaker 3: the Bible in a Year podcast today. The Bible in
- 2:25Speaker 3: a Year podcast is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and
- 2:29Speaker 3: can only come to you each week through the support
- 2:31Speaker 3: of listeners just like you. Your support today is so
- 2:34Speaker 3: important that we want to thank you for your gift
- 2:37Speaker 3: by giving you a copy of my book called The
- 2:39Speaker 3: Jesus Book. It is a powerful guide that shows how
- 2:43Speaker 3: every book of the Bible points to Jesus and how
- 2:46Speaker 3: his living word, the truth of God's word, will transform
- 2:49Speaker 3: your life. So to get a copy of the Jesus book,
- 2:53Speaker 3: simply go to jackgraham.org slash Jesus. That's jackgraham.org slash Jesus.
- 3:01Speaker 3: And thank you for your support. In our last episode,
- 3:05Speaker 3: we learned how David made right on a wrong done
- 3:07Speaker 3: by his predecessor Saul to the Gibeonites, and how God
- 3:11Speaker 3: blessed his righteous actions with prosperity for Israel. The Philistines
- 3:17Speaker 3: once again attacked. wanting to plunder Israel's wealth, but David's
- 3:21Speaker 3: army was strong, well-trained, and courageous, just as their leader David.
- 3:27Speaker 3: David now is in his older years, and he had
- 3:30Speaker 3: built a legacy, a life of courage and conviction and
- 3:33Speaker 3: commitment that glorified God and blessed the people of God.
- 3:39Speaker 3: So today, we'll hear how David actually allowed some insecurity
- 3:43Speaker 3: in and a sense of ownership of the people. causing
- 3:46Speaker 3: him to seek to control God's people by taking a census.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Though he was warned by his friend and commander Joab,
- 3:54Speaker 3: David pushes forward. And as always, when we disobey God,
- 3:59Speaker 3: there is a price to pay for his actions. And
- 4:02Speaker 3: David will be faced with a very tough decision. What
- 4:05Speaker 3: will he choose? Let's find out on today's reading.
- 4:10Speaker 2: David arose early in the morning. His bones creaked as
- 4:13Speaker 2: he lifted himself out of his bed. His muscles were sore,
- 4:17Speaker 2: and every step revealed a new part of his body
- 4:20Speaker 2: that ached. David's youth was waning. Decades of battle had
- 4:24Speaker 2: aged him rapidly. His once muscular and chiseled frame felt
- 4:29Speaker 2: as if it had been slightly eroded by the sea.
- 4:32Speaker 2: David washed his face and gazed into the mirror. His
- 4:35Speaker 2: beard was becoming gray, and the light in his eyes
- 4:38Speaker 2: seemed to be dimming. David realized that he was no
- 4:42Speaker 2: longer the young warrior who defeated Goliath. He was older
- 4:46Speaker 2: and less capable of defending Israel with his sword. In
- 4:49Speaker 2: light of this new insecurity, David decided to take a
- 4:52Speaker 2: census of the nation to measure the vastness in Israel.
- 4:56Speaker 2: He took great pride in the work he had done
- 4:58Speaker 2: as king. Therefore, he desired to measure his success by
- 5:01Speaker 2: accounting the people in his armies. He also wanted to
- 5:04Speaker 2: gauge how vulnerable Israel might be to outside attack. David
- 5:08Speaker 2: gathered Joab and said, We will take a census of
- 5:12Speaker 2: all the tribes of Israel. From Dan to Beersheba, we
- 5:16Speaker 2: will know just how many people are within our borders.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Joab winced at David's orders. He knew that the census
- 5:23Speaker 2: was a means to control people. The law of Moses
- 5:26Speaker 2: clearly stated that a man only had the right to
- 5:29Speaker 2: count what belonged to him. Israel belonged to God, not David.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Joab knew this and spoke up to David, saying, You
- 5:37Speaker 2: know I love you, king. It is my prayer that
- 5:40Speaker 2: God blesses you a hundredfold. But why would you do
- 5:43Speaker 2: this to the people? It would cause unrest and discomfort.
- 5:47Speaker 2: David ignored Joab's complaints. He was solely focused on fortifying
- 5:51Speaker 2: what he had built. He sent out all of his
- 5:54Speaker 2: commanders to comb the country to count all of the people.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Nine months had passed, and David's men had disrupted every city, town,
- 6:03Speaker 2: and farm in Israel to count its members. Joab returned
- 6:07Speaker 2: from his nine-month journey and handed the records to David.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Joab's eyes scanned David's demeanor as he read the results
- 6:14Speaker 2: of the census. There was only one thing David truly
- 6:18Speaker 2: cared about. In the nation of Israel, there were 1.3
- 6:22Speaker 2: million capable men able to fight. With this, David put
- 6:26Speaker 2: down the report and went to bed. That night, David
- 6:29Speaker 2: tossed and turned in his bed. David's delicate conscience began
- 6:33Speaker 2: to stir within him. He imagined all of the people
- 6:36Speaker 2: of Israel being rounded up like cattle to be counted.
- 6:40Speaker 2: He pictured the humiliated look on men's faces when soldiers
- 6:43Speaker 2: entered their homes. He sat up from his bed and
- 6:46Speaker 2: took a deep breath. He covered his face with his
- 6:48Speaker 2: hands and began to weep. What have I done?
- 6:52Speaker 1: He whispered.
- 6:53Speaker 2: David got up from his bed and grabbed his harp.
- 6:56Speaker 2: He sat on his balcony and strummed. It soothed him.
- 7:00Speaker 2: He played for the Lord for a while and began
- 7:02Speaker 2: to weep again. Lord, forgive me. Forgive my guilt. I
- 7:07Speaker 2: have been so foolish. The next morning a prophet in
- 7:11Speaker 2: the land named Gad sat in the halls of David
- 7:14Speaker 2: waiting for him. David walked around the corner to find
- 7:17Speaker 2: Gad sitting and waiting. He knew why Gad was there
- 7:20Speaker 2: and had no need to ask. Gad arose from his
- 7:23Speaker 2: seat and beckoned David to walk with him. Together they
- 7:27Speaker 2: strode the courtyards of David's home, and Gad spoke clearly
- 7:31Speaker 2: to David, saying, You must choose from three punishments from God.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Only one of the three will be inflicted upon you.
- 7:38Speaker 2: David gulped and nodded for Gad to continue. Three years
- 7:43Speaker 2: of famine, hunger and strife. Three months of fleeing your
- 7:47Speaker 2: enemies in fear for your life. Three days of severe
- 7:51Speaker 2: plague on the land. These are your choices. David held
- 7:56Speaker 2: his breath for a long moment. His heart began to race.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Sweat dripped down his brow. Every option seemed too much
- 8:03Speaker 2: to bear. I am in a desperate situation, David yelled.
- 8:08Speaker 2: His lower lip began to tremble, but he regained his
- 8:11Speaker 2: composure and said, I would rather us fall into the
- 8:14Speaker 2: hands of the Lord than the hands of man, so
- 8:16Speaker 2: I choose the plague. David's logic seemed to be sound.
- 8:20Speaker 2: He chose three days of a plague than three years
- 8:23Speaker 2: of hunger. However, he also chose the harm of people
- 8:27Speaker 2: over the harm of himself. In the first part of
- 8:30Speaker 2: that week, 70,000 Israelites died of intense sickness. David was
- 8:35Speaker 2: walking the streets with horror as people were crying out
- 8:38Speaker 2: in pain. The anguished cries filled David's ears and he
- 8:42Speaker 2: could hardly bear it. In an emotional daze, David caught
- 8:46Speaker 2: a glimpse of something passing through the streets. Hovering over
- 8:49Speaker 2: the sick and dying, David saw an angel of the
- 8:52Speaker 2: Lord administering the punishment due to Israel because of David. Immediately,
- 8:57Speaker 2: David fell to his knees and prayed to God, Lord,
- 9:01Speaker 2: I am the one who has sinned. David beat his chest.
- 9:05Speaker 2: These people are innocent sheep. They have done nothing. Let
- 9:07Speaker 2: your anger fall on me and my family. Do not
- 9:10Speaker 2: harm them anymore. Finally David understood. He had lost his
- 9:15Speaker 2: shepherd's heart. In doing the census, David had acted as
- 9:18Speaker 2: a tyrant king instead of a loving shepherd. The very
- 9:22Speaker 2: reason David was chosen as king in the first place
- 9:25Speaker 2: was that he would willingly lay down his life for
- 9:27Speaker 2: the protection and joy of his people. Yet in the
- 9:30Speaker 2: past few years, David had lived his life solely for
- 9:33Speaker 2: his own safety and security. David arose from his knees
- 9:37Speaker 2: and went back to the center of Jerusalem. David sacrificed
- 9:41Speaker 2: much of his personal wealth to build an altar for
- 9:43Speaker 2: the Lord in the center of Jerusalem. There he made
- 9:46Speaker 2: sacrifices to God on behalf of himself and all the
- 9:49Speaker 2: people of Israel. He wept, he worshipped, and he prayed
- 9:54Speaker 2: for the preservation of his sheep. God answered, and there
- 9:58Speaker 2: was a restoration in the land of Israel unlike any
- 10:01Speaker 2: has ever seen.
- 10:05Speaker 3: As we begin today's passage, David is feeling the toll
- 10:08Speaker 3: of his years. He has fought many battles, and his
- 10:12Speaker 3: body reminds him that he's not a young warrior anymore.
- 10:16Speaker 3: So much of his identity has been wrapped up in
- 10:18Speaker 3: his strength and courage, from his days as a shepherd
- 10:22Speaker 3: boy defending the flocks from wild beasts to the time
- 10:25Speaker 3: of killing the great giant and then later protecting God's
- 10:28Speaker 3: people from foreign aggressors as the king of the nation
- 10:33Speaker 3: of Israel. But without that vigor of youth, David began
- 10:37Speaker 3: to worry that he could no longer defend God's people.
- 10:41Speaker 3: He would have done well to remind himself of all
- 10:44Speaker 3: the promises of God that God would keep and protect
- 10:47Speaker 3: his people. But as insecurity began to creep in, a
- 10:51Speaker 3: switch seemed to flip in David's mind. David wanted to
- 10:54Speaker 3: take hold of what he had accomplished to control his kingdom.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Chronicles tells us that Satan tempted David to take a
- 11:02Speaker 3: census of the people. Surely the devil was not pleased
- 11:06Speaker 3: that God's people were prospering and that David was leading
- 11:10Speaker 3: so well, so he went on the attack. He planted
- 11:13Speaker 3: a seed, but it was David who acted. David took
- 11:17Speaker 3: the bait, he took the temptation, and called for a count,
- 11:21Speaker 3: a census of all the people, once again in disobedience
- 11:25Speaker 3: to God's instructions. Joab, David's nephew and commander of his army,
- 11:30Speaker 3: was troubled by the orders and counseled the king to reconsider.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Joad seemed to know that David was motivated by fear
- 11:38Speaker 3: and a desire to control. But unfortunately, David ignored him,
- 11:43Speaker 3: and for over nine months they counted people throughout the land.
- 11:46Speaker 3: 1.3 million souls were numbered in David's kingdom. But what
- 11:51Speaker 3: David did to bring himself peace had the exact opposite effect.
- 11:56Speaker 3: He is now troubled and convicted of his disobedience. I
- 12:00Speaker 3: think all of us can relate to this. When we
- 12:02Speaker 3: disobey God, when we don't follow God's guidance and leadership
- 12:06Speaker 3: in our lives, we find ourselves grieved and filled with guilt.
- 12:11Speaker 3: God gave David three choices, two that would afflict his
- 12:14Speaker 3: people and one that would afflict him only. David chose
- 12:18Speaker 3: the shortest punishment, three days of plagues on the people.
- 12:23Speaker 3: It might have seemed the best choice, a wise choice,
- 12:25Speaker 3: but there was so much selfishness in David at this point.
- 12:29Speaker 3: He opted for his own safety, taking care of himself
- 12:33Speaker 3: rather than seeking to protect God's people. They were punished
- 12:38Speaker 3: for his sin. 70,000 Israelites died, and as David walked
- 12:43Speaker 3: the streets, he saw God's judgment angel giving out punishment
- 12:48Speaker 3: on the people, striking them with disease. He could take
- 12:51Speaker 3: it no more and cried out to God as we
- 12:53Speaker 3: read in 2 Chronicles 24, verse 17, Behold, I have sinned.
- 12:58Speaker 3: and I've done wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done?
- 13:03Speaker 3: Please let your hand be against me and against my
- 13:07Speaker 3: father's house. Once again, David, the good shepherd, emerged, eager
- 13:13Speaker 3: to save his people. It was a foreshadowing of something
- 13:17Speaker 3: much greater, a greater king, one greater than David, one
- 13:22Speaker 3: greater than Solomon, who would take our sins to a
- 13:25Speaker 3: cross and died in order that he may experience the
- 13:29Speaker 3: judgment that we deserve. This is the message of the
- 13:32Speaker 3: Christian faith, that God redeems our suffering, that he saves
- 13:37Speaker 3: us from our sin, not because we deserve it, but
- 13:40Speaker 3: because of what Jesus himself has done in laying down
- 13:43Speaker 3: his life as the full and final sacrifice for all
- 13:47Speaker 3: that we have done in disobedience to God. Jesus took
- 13:51Speaker 3: the wrath of God in order that we might experience salvation, forgiveness,
- 13:58Speaker 3: and eternal life. David built an altar to offer sacrifices
- 14:03Speaker 3: to the Lord and atone for his sins and save
- 14:05Speaker 3: Israel from God's wrath. He purchased a threshing floor, insisting
- 14:10Speaker 3: to pay a fair price because he knew that a
- 14:12Speaker 3: sacrifice that cost David nothing would not honor God. In fact,
- 14:17Speaker 3: David said, God forbid that I would sacrifice to the
- 14:21Speaker 3: Lord that which cost me nothing. Today's lesson reveals once
- 14:26Speaker 3: again that David is very human and very sinful and
- 14:30Speaker 3: very imperfect. But there is a God who is faithful.
- 14:34Speaker 3: And the God of Israel, the God of David, the
- 14:37Speaker 3: God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is faithful
- 14:40Speaker 3: to us today. And when we sin and break God's
- 14:42Speaker 3: commandments and repent of that sin, we receive God's grace.
- 14:48Speaker 3: God loves you with an everlasting love. He will never
- 14:51Speaker 3: let you go. He keeps you and holds you, not
- 14:54Speaker 3: because of what you have done, but because of the
- 14:56Speaker 3: work of his Son on the cross and by the
- 14:59Speaker 3: power of his love. Dear God, thank you for today's scripture.
- 15:04Speaker 3: A reminder that you are quick and eager to forgive
- 15:08Speaker 3: when we repent and turn to you. Help us, like David,
- 15:13Speaker 3: to be willing to sacrifice our own comfort and well-being
- 15:16Speaker 3: for the sake of others. May we be generous in
- 15:19Speaker 3: what we give to you. May we become living sacrifices
- 15:23Speaker 3: as you tell us in the scripture and lay our
- 15:25Speaker 3: lives on the altar in Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you
- 15:30Speaker 3: for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast. And
