• 1:27
Speaker 1: I hope you appreciate it Got some backlighting.
• 1:31
Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know if anybody's know, but I've been changing the color.
• 1:34
Speaker 1: Have you been doing that or has you been doing it?
• 1:36
Speaker 1: I've been doing it, okay, well, thank you.
• 1:38
Speaker 2: I think, jeff, just to glow there.
• 1:40
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's purple now.
• 1:42
  Speaker 3: That is no.
• 1:42
  Speaker 3: It's actually blue.
• 1:43
Speaker 3: Supposed to be blue, okay, is it?
• 1:45
Speaker 1: No, it's button I pushed was oh, okay.
• 1:48
Speaker 1: Well, thank you very much.
• 1:49
Speaker 1: I I've been dying to do this story while we're waiting for the guy from pencil, here we go.
• 1:55
Speaker 1: Okay, nine old tools Almost nobody uses anymore, and I think I would fall into that category myself.
• 2:04
Speaker 1: You are a tool.
• 2:05
  Speaker 1: I am a tool.
• 2:06
  Speaker 1: Here's one, peter.
• 2:08
  Speaker 1: There's a tool, that's a tool Spark plug gap tool.
• 2:14
Speaker 1: When's the last time you used one of those?
• 2:16
  Speaker 1: Last time I?
• 2:17
  Speaker 3: changed spark plugs.
• 2:18
Speaker 3: Yeah, I was gonna say I used it all the time.
• 2:19
Speaker 3: Do you really, yep, use it for the mower too when you change plug?
• 2:24
Speaker 1: Spark tools can still be found in the impulse bisection of your favorite parts store.
• 2:27
Speaker 1: These have all been eliminated from regular loose by the growing popularity of iridium and platinum plugs.
• 2:35
Speaker 1: These rare earth metals are extremely resistant to degradation, but when it comes time to set the proper gap between the ground strap and electrode, they are very delicate.
• 2:44
Speaker 1: That's why the factory sets the gap when the plug is produced.
• 2:48
Speaker 2: Yeah, most plugs that you buy are gapped in the box, but I always check them.
• 2:54
Speaker 1: You know you never Do you ever have to adjust them.
• 2:56
  Speaker 1: I never do.
• 2:57
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, if somebody gets a little rough with a box and drops on them, I guess, but it's rare.
• 3:03
Speaker 3: Nothing worse than getting rough with the box.
• 3:07
Speaker 1: You know, I'm not even gonna go there on that one.
• 3:09
Speaker 1: Here's one, and actually if we looked in that toolbox you will find a Torque wrench Dwell meter.
• 3:17
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, oh, probably in the bottom drawer, I don't know, it's in there somewhere.
• 3:21
Speaker 1: Yeah, fifty years ago, tune up of an engine centered on the ignition system.
• 3:29
Speaker 1: Breaker points are critical to a properly functioning ignition system and timing how long those points are closed.
• 3:37
Speaker 1: The dwell determines how much charge is built up in the ignition coil and thus discharged through the spark plug.
• 3:43
Speaker 1: Poorly timed ignition discharges wasted energy.
• 3:47
Speaker 1: But electronic ignition setups have never been more reliable or polarizing.
• 3:52
Speaker 1: But we'll leave that verdict up to you.
• 3:54
Speaker 1: Setting the point gap properly is usually enough to keep an engine running well, and modern multifunction timing lights can include a dwell meter.
• 4:04
Speaker 2: And there was a period of time where you needed a dwell meter to tune a carburetor.
• 4:08
Speaker 2: Yes, and they had the electronic carburetors and I used my dwell meter doing the carburetor as well.
• 4:13
Speaker 1: Time, because you could tell.
• 4:16
Speaker 3: Oh, that's too far.
• 4:16
Speaker 3: Back it off a little bit.
• 4:18
Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, distributor wrench.
• 4:21
Speaker 1: When's the last time?
• 4:23
  Speaker 4: you used it.
• 4:23
Speaker 4: Remember the distributor the funny looking thing that's called L shaped thing.
• 4:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, distributor wrench, I've got two of them.
• 4:31
Speaker 2: I've got one that's a half inch, which is typically a four, and then I got one that's a nine, 16 inches.
• 4:35
Speaker 2: This is next to a dwell meter, typically GM.
• 4:38
Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe we should put those on display for everybody.
• 4:41
Speaker 1: Oh look, bunch of old guys with some old tools.
• 4:44
  Speaker 1: That nobody.
• 4:45
Speaker 1: Well, they're all old.
• 4:46
Speaker 2: Nobody uses any of them anymore.
• 4:48
Speaker 1: No, guys, old guys have old tools.
• 4:49
Speaker 1: There's that A pre OBD two, two diagnostic scan tools.
• 4:59
Speaker 2: Tech one is what in GM's phrase it was called was a tech one.
• 5:03
Speaker 2: Now they just plug into the OBD two and run it through a laptop.
• 5:08
Speaker 2: But there are certain break systems.
• 5:11
Speaker 2: You had to have a tech one to diagnose certain break systems.
• 5:17
Speaker 1: I never, I was not, that was not my era.
• 5:20
Speaker 1: Distributor machine oh, distributor machines.
• 5:26
Speaker 2: Turn it and turn the distributor at that Go again.
• 5:29
Speaker 2: And you could not only just tune the distributor for the points, but you could tune the vacuum advance.
• 5:37
  Speaker 2: That's right.
• 5:37
Speaker 1: Yes, well, you take the Allen wrench and stick it in the vacuum hole and turn it and turn it.
• 5:44
  Speaker 1: Thank you, yep.
• 5:47
Speaker 1: Here's one, and I actually saw an ad for a used one.
• 5:53
Speaker 1: They can't give them away.
• 5:54
Speaker 1: It's kind of like real to real.
• 5:55
Speaker 1: Tape recorders, an engine analyzer, the sun 2000.
• 5:59
Speaker 2: Oh, the big one.
• 6:00
Speaker 2: It hung from the rail in the ceiling.
• 6:02
Speaker 2: Oh, I actually, when I worked at the Oldsville dealership.
• 6:06
Speaker 2: Yeah, the wires were chewed up.
• 6:07
Speaker 1: Either that or the one that I'm familiar with was a big roll around cabinet.
• 6:12
Speaker 1: That was probably six feet six feet tall, yeah, and they had to put up a huge amount of wall space in the tuneup guys slot and it had an oscilloscope on it so you could look at the secondary ignition on the oscilloscope.
• 6:25
Speaker 2: The thing I used it most for was to charge condensers.
• 6:30
Speaker 3: I'd charge and then say here you go Throw it to somebody.
• 6:33
  Speaker 3: They catch it.
• 6:34
Speaker 2: It's zap the crap out of them.
• 6:37
  Speaker 1: Yes, I do.
• 6:38
  Speaker 3: What a guy.
• 6:39
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 6:39
Speaker 1: Yep the most pneumatic tools for home shops.
• 6:46
Speaker 1: Yep Gone away, gone away.
• 6:48
Speaker 2: Everybody's gone with the wireless Yep, makita's and stuff, yes, so yeah, yeah, I still have my air, air air air wrench, and I guess if I looked in there I'd probably find it.
• 7:00
Speaker 2: I still got an impact and the ratchet, the ratchet, and then I have a butterfly as well.
• 7:05
Speaker 2: Which is the faster?
• 7:06
Speaker 2: Yeah, my butterfly died.
• 7:07
Speaker 4: But you know, and I got a pumpkin compressor that almost run the impact.
• 7:11
Speaker 4: You know it's just not big enough to hold in the volume, but it'll run the ratchet and I've since bought an electric battery oh yeah.
• 7:19
Speaker 2: Or not ratchet Impact.
• 7:21
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what I had up here last week when we was working with the battery powered with.
• 7:25
  Speaker 4: Okay, here's one.
• 7:27
Speaker 1: Here's one that I'm not familiar with, the words Babbit bearing molds or machining jigs, machining jigs, I got that, but what is a babbit bearing mold?
• 7:37
Speaker 2: So in a think of a main bearing or a rod bearing, the softest material in there that you could literally scratch with a thumbnail that's the babbit.
• 7:45
Speaker 2: So you would, you would put the bearing in Now this is like real old school and you would smear fresh babbit in there and that mold would hold it in place so that you got the correct depth of Babbit.
• 7:57
Speaker 2: See, I even had, when I was turning wrenches, I even had a, an old valve grinding machine, yes, and then you had the, the, the electric spinner that you could seat the.
• 8:13
Speaker 2: You know, cut the valve seats as well.
• 8:14
Speaker 1: We had one of those machines in a cage at Richardson Chevrolet.
• 8:18
Speaker 1: Nobody usually used it, but it was there Apparently at some point.
• 8:23
Speaker 1: They used it Because you replaced the valves.
• 8:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, because it's cheaper too.
• 8:26
Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought that was fun.
• 8:28
Speaker 1: And then this one.
• 8:31
Speaker 1: I'm familiar with the split rim tire tool.
• 8:34
Speaker 1: Oh, that'd kill you if you didn't do it right.
• 8:38
  Speaker 1: You're right, it's exactly right.
• 8:39
Speaker 1: Now they have a really thick cage that they use to blow up tires and you know, high pressure stuff.
• 8:47
Speaker 1: So when it does go, when it does release, it stays within the cage.
• 8:52
Speaker 2: Well, and even when you go because you know I just recently got my tires done at Discount every time they do a tire that final, last air piece until the bead seat and pop out, they do put it inside that cage, which is for the safety of the handler, yeah, and everybody in the shop.
• 9:12
Speaker 1: But with the split ring that thing was really thick and it was basically spring steel because you could bend it a little bit.
• 9:22
Speaker 2: And I'll tell you what.
• 9:23
Speaker 2: You go shooting across the shop and oh, it shoot a hundred feet a year.
• 9:27
Speaker 1: if you did it the wrong way, you better stand back.
• 9:30
Speaker 3: And those beads aren't seated once they do that.
• 9:31
Speaker 3: The beads aren't seated on the tire until after a few miles are driven.
• 9:35
Speaker 2: Where you drive it, it flexes and gets itself already seated.
• 9:37
  Speaker 1: It's actually seated.
• 9:38
Speaker 1: It worked all the way in.
• 9:39
Speaker 1: Yeah Well, talk to me about tire beads and beads on wheels.
• 9:45
Speaker 1: What about craftsman torque wrenches?
• 9:47
Speaker 1: Don yeah, Let me tell you about my craftsman torque wrench.
• 9:51
  Speaker 3: Now it's a dwell meter.
• 9:52
Speaker 3: It was, you know what when we were doing the studio.
• 9:55
Speaker 3: The show was going really well See we did.
• 9:57
Speaker 2: Jaguar and torque wrenches today.
• 9:59
Speaker 1: I want you to know that I finally threw that.
• 10:01
  Speaker 3: Happy new year.
• 10:02
Speaker 1: I finally threw that.
• 10:02
Speaker 1: George Skelton was tired of hearing me talk about the damn craftsman torque wrench that they wouldn't take back because it wasn't warrantied for life.
• 10:15
Speaker 2: It was warrantied for life.
• 10:16
Speaker 2: George has already posted on here.
• 10:18
Speaker 3: Well, that person, that individual that denied your claim, is now VP of customer relations.
• 10:23
Speaker 2: Yeah, and snap on tools yeah.
• 10:25
Speaker 1: I'm sorry, sir, we don't take, because they sold the entire line of craftsman to somebody else.
• 10:32
Speaker 2: Well, and because torque wrenches to a large degree are a thing of the past, Now they go with these angle meters.
• 10:38
Speaker 2: So you get, you get the, the bolt down to a point and then you put an angle meter on it and you put 45 degrees on it all the way around and you do another 45 degrees on it all the way around and they say that that bolt stretches a little bit and that's a better measurement of the compression load on the gasket than a torque meter.
• 11:00
Speaker 1: I will tell you this that one that George sent me works just fine.
• 11:05
  Speaker 1: Thank you, George.
• 11:07
Speaker 4: Hundred pounds of torque on the wheels on the Corvette, and I haven't been in any machine shops lately or quite some time, but I don't remember ever seeing somebody say okay, let's go 45 degrees.
• 11:19
Speaker 4: Now, they were just yeah they're putting the torque wrench on it.
• 11:22
Speaker 1: And that's what they do at Disco tire.
• 11:24
  Speaker 2: And yeah.
• 11:26
Speaker 3: And they have that torque.
• 11:27
Speaker 2: they have that torque to yield thing yeah.
• 11:30
Speaker 3: And speaking of George, we had the Perini luncheon last week.
• 11:33
  Speaker 3: We did.
• 11:33
Speaker 4: Thank you very much.
• 11:34
Speaker 1: Yes, oh yeah, it was wonderful it was.
• 11:36
Speaker 1: It was very good.
• 11:37
Speaker 1: Thank you, george Skelton for our our Perini lunch.
• 11:40
Speaker 1: We love that and we made it every year.
• 11:43
Speaker 1: As a matter of fact, the girls even commented on it.
• 11:45
Speaker 1: You know this started off as some sandwich meat and now it's turned into this thing, ex.
• 11:52
Speaker 3: You know a lot of deserts they were going to bring something.
• 11:54
Speaker 1: Yeah, and they were going to bring something.
• 11:55
Speaker 3: So, yeah, well, cathy made that wonderful, the Inwheel Time, ladies' auxiliary, they they helped out.
• 11:59
Speaker 1: That's that's exactly right, and it was delish.
• 12:03
Speaker 2: I missed out on the on the whiskey.
• 12:04
Speaker 2: Uh, whiskey cake yeah.
• 12:06
Speaker 1: Yeah, how did you miss?
• 12:07
  Speaker 2: out.
• 12:07
Speaker 2: I think I probably left a little early.
• 12:09
Speaker 3: I had a couple, oh you know she was cooking it or she was baking it or warming it up, but it actually the whiskey is in the sauce, not the cake itself.
• 12:17
Speaker 3: So when you layer it with the sauce and that caramel stuff that's where the whiskey's at.
• 12:22
Speaker 3: I had a pedicure and it we had some for the next couple of days after that.
• 12:29
  Speaker 3: It was.
• 12:29
  Speaker 3: It was delish.
• 12:31
Speaker 1: The meat it is, it's spectacular, yeah yeah, and it looked like it was half raw.
• 12:39
Speaker 1: It was delicious, it was delicious.
• 12:41
Speaker 4: It was perfect, Absolutely perfect.
• 12:43
Speaker 4: I just figured it was the lighting crummy lighting in the kitchen.
• 12:48
Speaker 1: Well, there's that too, but that had nothing to do with the meat.
• 12:52
Speaker 4: Close your eyes and just eat it.
• 12:53
Speaker 4: It was so good.
• 12:54
Speaker 1: We had some horseradish sauce and we had the fixings you know what it was.
• 12:59
Speaker 3: Coal slaw, there was twice baked potato casserole, the main course, obviously, and bread pumpernickel, was it pumpernickel.
• 13:07
Speaker 1: No, and some of that in-store cooked sourdough One was sourdough and the other was roll kind of thing.
• 13:15
Speaker 1: It was really good Thank you.
• 13:17
  Speaker 1: George.
• 13:18
Speaker 1: Thank you, george, appreciate you.
• 13:20
Speaker 4: Thank you yes, yes, yes.
• 13:22
Speaker 1: George Skeleton is our number one fan, always.
• 13:27
Speaker 1: Yep, I hope George got my little video that we did.
• 13:32
Speaker 1: I sent it to him.
• 13:33
Speaker 1: I had to send it in three parts because you know, stupid Too big.
• 13:36
Speaker 1: Yeah, the file is too big.
• 13:38
Speaker 1: I sent it in three parts.
• 13:39
Speaker 4: Remember, he's the video guy.
• 13:42
  Speaker 1: Yeah, live video.
• 13:43
Speaker 1: Shut up Coops horseradish.
• 13:48
  Speaker 3: Actually, that's a market.
• 13:49
  Speaker 1: That's horseradish mustard.
• 13:50
  Speaker 1: Coops horseradish mustard.
• 13:52
Speaker 1: Yes, Well, I had a different.
• 13:54
Speaker 1: I actually had real horseradish in there too.
• 13:57
  Speaker 2: Yeah, raw.
• 13:57
Speaker 2: I call it raw horseradish as opposed to a lot of times people make it sour, the fake horseradish.
• 14:01
Speaker 2: No, they mixed it with sour cream.
• 14:03
Speaker 2: Now you want the raw horseradish.
• 14:05
Speaker 2: That kind of burns a little bit that all burns twice.
• 14:09
Speaker 1: Yes, Did you want to make a comment there, Mr Mars?
• 14:15
Speaker 1: No sir, we have a little time.
• 14:17
Speaker 1: It's time now to get your pens and paper.
• 14:20
Speaker 4: Oh here we go.
• 14:21
  Speaker 1: Here we go.
• 14:21
Speaker 1: Emmyscom sold cars roundup.
• 14:25
Speaker 3: Play along at home this one here.
• 14:27
Speaker 1: I put these two together because they're both 1978 models.
• 14:31
Speaker 1: Okay, so the first one is a 78 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe.
• 14:39
Speaker 1: Okay, with the teatops.
• 14:41
Speaker 1: All right, there's nothing fancy about it.
• 14:45
Speaker 1: It's got stock factory optional aluminum wheels, not too far from yours.
• 14:53
  Speaker 2: Well years.
• 14:54
Speaker 1: There is Well, you mean, you talked about that one yeah, no, but 78 had the bubble back glass, didn't it?
• 15:00
Speaker 1: Yes, and there was also a 78 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe.
• 15:05
Speaker 1: That's an official pace car, at least that's what it's got on it, so we'll assume that it is a true pace car, pace car.
• 15:14
Speaker 1: Okay, this is a lot of clones and you can buy the stickers that go on the side.
• 15:19
Speaker 1: We were buying both of them together.
• 15:20
Speaker 1: No, not together, but I want you to give me a price on the original Coupe for 78.
• 15:27
  Speaker 1: Chevrolet Coupe.
• 15:29
  Speaker 1: Okay, it's a two tone.
• 15:31
  Speaker 1: I think that that was a that I don't even.
• 15:34
Speaker 1: Is that an option?
• 15:35
Speaker 1: I'm not quite sure, but this one is painted in a two tone color scheme.
• 15:39
  Speaker 4: Nothing about miles.
• 15:40
Speaker 4: No, we don't get into that Miles makes such a difference in the price of that.
• 15:44
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 15:46
Speaker 1: Well then you do your bid Based on your miles.
• 15:50
  Speaker 3: Yeah, your miles.
• 15:51
Speaker 3: How far is it to your house?
• 15:52
  Speaker 1: 1978.
• 15:53
Speaker 1: So, mr Mars, what would you think the 78 standard looking Corvette would be?
• 16:01
  Speaker 4: 14, 9.
• 16:02
  Speaker 4: Okay, Conrad.
• 16:04
  Speaker 2: Well, I had 14 down, I wrote 14 down, okay, 17.
• 16:09
  Speaker 1: 15, 750.
• 16:10
Speaker 1: All right, mars, we're all within a couple of grand.
• 16:14
Speaker 1: Now let's talk about the pace car.
• 16:17
Speaker 1: We'll just assume that it's original.
• 16:20
Speaker 1: How much would you think that the 78 clean looking pace car would be 23.
• 16:25
Speaker 1: Bust of Mars 19.
• 16:27
  Speaker 1: 27.
• 16:28
  Speaker 1: 26.
• 16:30
  Speaker 1: 250.
• 16:31
Speaker 1: Wow, so it's probably got very little mileage on it and it looks very clean.
• 16:36
Speaker 1: Anyway, more than it was new?
• 16:37
  Speaker 1: Yes, most definitely.
• 16:39
Speaker 1: My 77 was $11,000 ordered from the factory and I paid sticker price for it.
• 16:46
Speaker 2: Without the trailer package on it.
• 16:49
Speaker 1: No trailer package on a Corvette.
• 16:51
Speaker 1: God, here you go.
• 16:53
  Speaker 1: 84 Ford Bronco 2.
• 16:55
  Speaker 1: Oh, j 84.
• 16:57
Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, no, no, this is the little one.
• 17:00
