- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:12Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Blazarre and Lazarre. Everybody nailed it Joined has always by
- 0:18Speaker 2: power Bar Gablita Risk Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Bars.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Teams that commit ten and more penalties in the last
- 0:27Speaker 3: ten years only win forty four percent of the time.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, but you could do that with anything. The teams
- 0:31Speaker 2: that teams that only throw for one hundred and fifty yards,
- 0:35Speaker 2: there's my point. But nobody but because one hundred and
- 0:37Speaker 2: fifty yards is an ab normally low numbers, okay, right,
- 0:40Speaker 2: Ten penalties is an a normally high numbers.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Right, So that's my point. There's no correlation between penalties
- 0:46Speaker 1: and winning. What was the exact I don't want to
- 0:48Speaker 1: miss quote what was the exact thing?
- 0:50Speaker 3: They don't impact with.
- 0:51Speaker 2: The three things win loss as much as three things
- 0:54Speaker 2: that that he highlighted that impact win loss at the
- 0:57Speaker 2: most turnover margin yeh epau per, drop back and rush differentials.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Those are the three things.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Okay, penalties aren't the most impactful thing, not a top
- 1:06Speaker 1: three thing, but.
- 1:07Speaker 3: It can be if you.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Let them become a problem.
- 1:11Speaker 2: That's a really good opening for this week, Alex, because
- 1:16Speaker 2: we're gonna do the good, the bad, and the stuff
- 1:18Speaker 2: that gets you beat. And I texted Alex when I
- 1:21Speaker 2: was doing some show prep, and I said, do we
- 1:24Speaker 2: have anything that the Patriots did in this game that
- 1:26Speaker 2: got them beat or could get them beat? I should say,
- 1:29Speaker 2: since they didn't get beat, could get them beat. And
- 1:31Speaker 2: we had a philosophical discussion last week of can you
- 1:34Speaker 2: win a game and do stuff that gets you beat?
- 1:37Speaker 2: And this week I had a really difficult time, Alex,
- 1:42Speaker 2: thinking of anything that they did in this football game
- 1:45Speaker 2: that belongs in the stuff that gets you beat. It
- 1:49Speaker 2: was really that good of a performance by the Patriots.
- 1:53Speaker 2: We philosophically disagree a little bit on penalties, which is
- 1:57Speaker 2: the one thing that you pointed out. And I wanted
- 2:00Speaker 2: to start the show with nothing but flowers, and of
- 2:03Speaker 2: course I'm going right to the stuff that gets you beat.
- 2:05Speaker 2: But it was such a short list that that's the
- 2:07Speaker 2: flowers that this performance on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers
- 2:11Speaker 2: was that good that I really did not have many
- 2:15Speaker 2: quibbles with this game. So we'll get to the good,
- 2:18Speaker 2: the bad, and the stuff that gets you beat. We'll
- 2:21Speaker 2: get to three up three down here today, and I
- 2:23Speaker 2: also sincerely want to do a Bill's preview this week.
- 2:29Speaker 3: You just want to talk about Josh Allen.
- 2:31Speaker 2: No, I want to do a Bill's preview. And the
- 2:34Speaker 2: reason why I'm excited about doing one is because this
- 2:37Speaker 2: is the first time in a long time that I
- 2:39Speaker 2: can remember where it actually matters, like the matchups and
- 2:43Speaker 2: the schemes game and the chess match it all. Actually
- 2:46Speaker 2: we can go maybe and I don't want to get
- 2:49Speaker 2: too ahead of myself, are too excited, but we can
- 2:52Speaker 2: maybe actually go back to analyzing the games, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 2: and actually like talking a show on the draft, like
- 3:00Speaker 2: the matchups and and uh, you know, big games and
- 3:03Speaker 2: Sunday night football and stakes and all that good stuff.
- 3:06Speaker 2: So that's a that's the show Rundown for today. We'll
- 3:09Speaker 2: take your calls and emails in the second hour of
- 3:12Speaker 2: the show, uh, and then we'll get us rolling here.
- 3:14Speaker 2: But that's my opening take about this game against the
- 3:18Speaker 2: Panthers was that this was probably the cleanest football game
- 3:23Speaker 2: that the New England Patriots have played in I would
- 3:27Speaker 2: say three years, eight months and twenty six days, which
- 3:31Speaker 2: was the Jacksonville fifty berg.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah, in twenty one since this, since that from that game,
- 3:36Speaker 1: going back to the end of the twenty one season,
- 3:39Speaker 1: it would I don't remember if we talked. I think
- 3:41Speaker 1: we did talk about this. The last time they won
- 3:43Speaker 1: at home in September. Their starting quarterback.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Was last time they won at home in September.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Before this game, Tom Brady, Uh, well, you actually overshot it.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Most people had said Mac Jones is Cam Newton's Cam.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I was close against the Week three That was actually
- 3:58Speaker 1: a fun game. Yeah, the first time they're at five
- 4:01Speaker 1: hundred or better at the end of September since twenty nineteen,
- 4:05Speaker 1: first time they've had and I don't know how deep
- 4:07Speaker 1: you want to dig into this one, Evan. So the
- 4:10Speaker 1: Miami game, they had five different players score a touchdown.
- 4:15Speaker 1: That was the first time, not five. There had been
- 4:17Speaker 1: other times they scored five touchdowns, but there was a
- 4:20Speaker 1: guy scoring two or three.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:22Speaker 1: It was the first time they had five different players
- 4:24Speaker 1: in a game score a touchdown since that Jacksonville game
- 4:27Speaker 1: that you mentioned and then.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Mac Holland scored.
- 4:29Speaker 1: They had six different players score a touchdown for the
- 4:34Speaker 1: first time since Week two twenty nineteen. You know game
- 4:40Speaker 1: that is Oh no, So here's your touchdown scores. Now
- 4:43Speaker 1: when Tom Brady, Yeah, James White, Brandon Bolden, Yeah, I'm
- 4:49Speaker 1: trying to do this off the top of my head.
- 4:51Speaker 1: There's a linebacker in there. I think it's Jamie Collins.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I'll double check that, Stefan Gilmour and Antonio Brown.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I was gonna say, Miami, Yeah, I was gonna say, yeah.
- 5:03Speaker 3: That's that's obviously not something.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Trust my gut more on those.
- 5:06Speaker 1: That's not something that's going to be a regular occurrence.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Obviously having six different players. It was Jamie Collins sixty
- 5:12Speaker 1: nine yard interception return touchdown.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Uh.
- 5:15Speaker 3: They had two pick sixes in the fourth quarter that game.
- 5:18Speaker 1: It's not something that's going to happen a ton, But
- 5:22Speaker 1: I think it speaks to how they've built this thing
- 5:25Speaker 1: back up.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Having Josh McDaniels back in the picture.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Did they have I mean they must have, but like,
- 5:31Speaker 1: how many different players scored a touchdown off last season?
- 5:34Speaker 2: More than six, but more than six. But like, I
- 5:37Speaker 2: think the point that you're getting at though, and this
- 5:39Speaker 2: kind of segues into the first part of the goods
- 5:41Speaker 2: as well that I wanted to bring up, which was,
- 5:43Speaker 2: of course, you know, Josh McDaniels and Drake May and
- 5:46Speaker 2: this whole marriage.
- 5:47Speaker 1: So this whole system, by the way, they had eras,
- 5:51Speaker 1: it's not including defense. I don't think they had any
- 5:53Speaker 1: defensive touchdowns last year, right, No, they didn't.
- 5:55Speaker 2: So.
- 5:57Speaker 3: They had won. So they had thirteen total players score
- 6:00Speaker 3: a touchdown last year. They had six in this game.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Yeah, So I think this comes back to, you know,
- 6:07Speaker 2: I wanted to start with McDaniels in May obviously, and
- 6:11Speaker 2: you look at this offense, that's a Josh McDaniel stown.
- 6:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Week one, Kayshaun Boody, right, leading receiver for the team,
- 6:18Speaker 2: one hundred yard game. Week two, it's Remandra Stevenson. Big
- 6:22Speaker 2: Remandra game has the fifty five yard catch, runs the
- 6:25Speaker 2: ball pretty well over one hundred plus yards from scrimmage.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Week three it's Hunter Henry eight catches ninety yards, two touchdowns.
- 6:33Speaker 2: This week it's Stefan Diggs. They do not have necessarily
- 6:38Speaker 2: the quote unquote number one receiver. Maybe Diggs is that
- 6:41Speaker 2: maybe he's starting to come on again post ACL and
- 6:44Speaker 2: we're starting to see the ACL Stefan Diggs come to light.
- 6:48Speaker 2: But on paper, they don't necessarily have a true Jamar
- 6:52Speaker 2: Chase Justin Jefferson Puka Nakua number one receiver, but they've
- 6:58Speaker 2: got great bounce, no balance. We often talk about run
- 7:02Speaker 2: pass balance, but this is also just balance of distributing
- 7:05Speaker 2: the football. Drake May has distributed the ball in the
- 7:08Speaker 2: last three weeks all over the place, like running backs,
- 7:12Speaker 2: tight ends, receivers, everybody is getting looks from Drake May.
- 7:16Speaker 2: And when I think about the Josh McDaniels offense, and
- 7:20Speaker 2: when I think about it at its peak with Brady
- 7:23Speaker 2: of course, but just in general, that to me is
- 7:26Speaker 2: the Josh McDaniels offense when it's at its peak, the
- 7:28Speaker 2: open guy is getting the football. It's not he doesn't
- 7:31Speaker 2: necessarily need to be force fed to one player. The
- 7:35Speaker 2: open guy is getting the football. And you're starting to
- 7:38Speaker 2: see that, and I think that in itself is also
- 7:42Speaker 2: a really good indication of the quarterback play that they
- 7:45Speaker 2: are getting because you don't see Drake May having to
- 7:51Speaker 2: force balls into tight windows or force feeding one particular player,
- 7:56Speaker 2: or having tunnel vision for his first read or digs
- 8:00Speaker 2: or what Hunter Henry or whatever the case may be.
- 8:04Speaker 2: And that tells you that that's a quarterback that is
- 8:07Speaker 2: going through his progressions, that's playing on time, that's playing
- 8:10Speaker 2: with confidence in the system that I can pass up
- 8:14Speaker 2: the first read because the second read is going to
- 8:17Speaker 2: be open, and I'm going to trust the guy that
- 8:19Speaker 2: is the second read in the progression to actually get
- 8:21Speaker 2: open on his route. And I understand that, based off
- 8:24Speaker 2: the coverage and based off the look that we're getting,
- 8:26Speaker 2: that that's the right decision here, and I'm willing to
- 8:29Speaker 2: make it. And that's when you start to get a
- 8:33Speaker 2: quarterback that is playing at a different level. And I
- 8:36Speaker 2: think you see that with all these different guys across
- 8:39Speaker 2: the league, and I think that that's a big part,
- 8:42Speaker 2: you know, as we start to talk about the Bills
- 8:44Speaker 2: here too, of Josh Allen's development is his willingness to
- 8:49Speaker 2: take profits and his willingness to not always hunt the
- 8:54Speaker 2: big play or the haymaker, and understanding the importance of
- 8:58Speaker 2: playing in structure. And I think we're just had a
- 9:00Speaker 2: really nice kind of heater right now for Drake May
- 9:05Speaker 2: and Josh McDaniels. In that respect, I want to break
- 9:09Speaker 2: out the McDaniels offense and what we're seeing him run
- 9:13Speaker 2: with Drake May into kind of buckets here in the subcategories,
- 9:18Speaker 2: if you will, because the other element of this Alex.
- 9:21Speaker 2: That I've just been really geeked up about with Josh
- 9:23Speaker 2: McDaniels is how much he has changed his offense to
- 9:28Speaker 2: cater it to Drake may.
- 9:31Speaker 1: I wonder who was talking about that when he got
- 9:32Speaker 1: hired and everybody freaked out.
- 9:34Speaker 2: It's it's really cool to see the different scheme elements
- 9:37Speaker 2: that he's brought to the table. This is not the
- 9:41Speaker 2: Josh McDaniels offense circa twenty sixteen. That doesn't mean that
- 9:44Speaker 2: there aren't things in it that are similar Certainly in
- 9:48Speaker 2: the drop back passing game there are similarities, but they
- 9:51Speaker 2: have done some things that I just frankly did not
- 9:54Speaker 2: know Josh McDaniels had in his bag, not because he's
- 9:57Speaker 2: not capable, but because he's never really shown it because
- 10:00Speaker 2: of the personnel that he's had, right, And the biggest one,
- 10:03Speaker 2: of course, is all like the moving pockets and stuff
- 10:05Speaker 2: like that. You just weren't going to do that with
- 10:07Speaker 2: Tom Brady, Like Tom Brady was not going to be
- 10:09Speaker 2: a bootleg quarterback. That just wasn't going to be something
- 10:13Speaker 2: that you were going to scheme with with Brady, and
- 10:15Speaker 2: he was the greatest of all time at a bunch
- 10:18Speaker 2: of other different things, but that was not one area
- 10:21Speaker 2: of his game that they were going to necessarily amplify.
- 10:24Speaker 2: So what the Patriots have done, and as we start
- 10:26Speaker 2: to go into these subcategories, I want to start with
- 10:29Speaker 2: like what they're doing from under center, And they're underneath
- 10:31Speaker 2: center quite a bit as an offense, you know, top
- 10:34Speaker 2: ten in the league there in under center rate old
- 10:38Speaker 2: McDaniels would go under center, they'd run gap right, they
- 10:42Speaker 2: run power, they run lead, they run counter, they run trap,
- 10:46Speaker 2: they run wham, and all these different gap schemes to
- 10:51Speaker 2: get downhill on the defense. But those gap schemes, for
- 10:55Speaker 2: the most part, some of them, and we saw some
- 10:57Speaker 2: of them in this game against Carolina, those gas schemes,
- 11:00Speaker 2: for the most part, do not set up bootlegs like
- 11:02Speaker 2: those gap schemes set up traditional play action pass. So
- 11:06Speaker 2: the Patriots from under center, they have evolved a lot
- 11:10Speaker 2: more to an outside zone duo team so that they
- 11:13Speaker 2: can script some of these bootlegs off of the stretch action.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And then they've also used a little bit of counter
- 11:19Speaker 2: or a trap which also kind of has like a
- 11:21Speaker 2: stretch action element that you can boot off of as well,
- 11:24Speaker 2: with the guard pulling and you boot the other direction.
- 11:27Speaker 2: So they've done a lot of that different stuff under
- 11:30Speaker 2: center that isn't necessarily what you know. We're gonna lead
- 11:35Speaker 2: the full back through the hole, and then sometimes it's
- 11:37Speaker 2: gonna be play action pass and he's gonna draw in
- 11:39Speaker 2: the linebackers and we're going to hit a crossing route
- 11:42Speaker 2: or a seam right by the ear hole of the linebacker.
- 11:45Speaker 2: This is a lot more of we're gonna get Drake
- 11:47Speaker 2: May on the edge, we're gonna get him on the move,
- 11:49Speaker 2: and we're gonna try to either push the ball down
- 11:51Speaker 2: the field off the bootlegs, or he's just gonna run
- 11:54Speaker 2: if the flat is open. So a very different philosophy there,
- 12:00Speaker 2: I would say, from what they used to be doing
- 12:03Speaker 2: to what they're doing now. And this is the last
- 12:04Speaker 2: point I'll make on this is just the amount of
- 12:07Speaker 2: motion and the increase in motion which comes with this
- 12:11Speaker 2: style of base offense. Like if you're going to be
- 12:14Speaker 2: an under center, outside zone keeper bootleg team, then you
- 12:18Speaker 2: have to have window dressing to that. You can't just
- 12:21Speaker 2: do it without motion. So over the last three weeks
- 12:24Speaker 2: they've been motioning at sixty two percent of the time
- 12:27Speaker 2: and they're right into the middle above average part of
- 12:32Speaker 2: the pack here in motion rate, that week one motion
- 12:35Speaker 2: rate is still keeping them down for the whole season,
- 12:37Speaker 2: but if we take that out, then they're at about
- 12:40Speaker 2: sixty two to sixty three percent. So they've really adapted
- 12:44Speaker 2: that under center offense to fit the quarterback and to
- 12:49Speaker 2: do it a little bit differently than what they did
- 12:52Speaker 2: with let's say Brady or mac Jones. And I think
- 12:54Speaker 2: that that's just a testament to mcdaniels's willingness to evolve
- 12:58Speaker 2: and to be different.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Yeah, this is what I talked about when he got
- 13:03Speaker 1: hired and everybody was freaking out about is he going
- 13:05Speaker 1: to be able to run the Brady offense and this and.
- 13:08Speaker 3: That they're too much on his plate or they're too
- 13:10Speaker 3: much on his plate.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Well, and it's what I'm excited for now is and
- 13:16Speaker 1: I say this a lot, so I apologize from coming
- 13:19Speaker 1: off to you know, a broken record here, but the
- 13:23Speaker 1: Josh Josh McDaniels offenses, because it's it's always even with Brady,
- 13:28Speaker 1: it's a little different from year to year, and he's
- 13:30Speaker 1: making he doesn't just tweak it for the quarterback, he
- 13:32Speaker 1: tweaks it for the personnel as a whole. So and
- 13:35Speaker 1: obviously a lot of that's around the quarterback. But you
- 13:37Speaker 1: have a running back that can do this, you have
- 13:38Speaker 1: a wide receiver that can do that. Now, YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Right, So.
- 13:43Speaker 1: It's never the same in December as it is in September,
- 13:45Speaker 1: and it always evolves and it changes it. Now that
- 13:47Speaker 1: we're a month in and you know, he started, I
- 13:51Speaker 1: think we've talked a lot about the personnel getting comfortable
- 13:56Speaker 1: with the system. I think there's also an element of
- 13:59Speaker 1: Josh mcday niels is now kind of comfortable with the personnel.
- 14:02Speaker 1: And look, you spend you know, the spring practices training camp.
- 14:05Speaker 1: You have an idea of what you have in these guys, certainly,
- 14:07Speaker 1: but I think there is an element of you have
- 14:09Speaker 1: to see it in a game to really understand. And
- 14:11Speaker 1: I think now he's like, Okay, this guy can do this,
- 14:14Speaker 1: and I want to try this with that guy and
- 14:15Speaker 1: blah blah blah. So that clip going around from the
- 14:18Speaker 1: miked up of McDaniels saying to May we're just getting started, right,
- 14:22Speaker 1: I'm excited to see. Okay, this is an awesome start. Now,
- 14:26Speaker 1: what like, what's the next evolution to this? And again
- 14:29Speaker 1: we'll talk about the bills in a little bit. But boy,
- 14:31Speaker 1: what a time to start introducing some new elements. Divisional
- 14:34Speaker 1: game prime time. You're gonna need, you know, some help
- 14:36Speaker 1: on the road against the superior team.
- 14:39Speaker 3: I just this is.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Josh McDaniels when he's at his best. It's catered to
- 14:45Speaker 1: the players in the system. It's a little bit different
- 14:48Speaker 1: than what everybody else is doing. He's mixing and matching
- 14:51Speaker 1: different pieces. You do a good job breaking down there
- 14:53Speaker 1: what they're doing with some of the play action stuff,
- 14:56Speaker 1: and I believe he's going to build on it from here.
- 15:00Speaker 1: This is not the final form of this offense. I
- 15:01Speaker 1: don't even think it's close. I think we're probably scratching
- 15:04Speaker 1: the surface just based on how he's done this in
- 15:06Speaker 1: the past, so I know we're not doing ups and
- 15:08Speaker 1: downs yet. But like Josh McDaniel's big up from this
- 15:11Speaker 1: game and probably from the first month of the season.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of good points, and I just.
- 15:17Speaker 1: I'll say this too, sorry, cut in with that talk
- 15:20Speaker 1: about him mixing and matching the different pieces, and he's
- 15:22Speaker 1: talked a little bit about this, and Mike Rabel's talked
- 15:23Speaker 1: a little.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Bit about this.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Thomas Brown, right, and we all ultimately don't know who's
- 15:30Speaker 1: inputting what.
- 15:30Speaker 3: But as the past game coordinator.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Your station, sir loves loves this topic. What topic.
- 15:35Speaker 1: There's other coaches now, Row h Thomas Brown, Doug Marone,
- 15:40Speaker 1: you know who brings some of that experiences. Some other
- 15:41Speaker 1: guys well, but I'm just thinking off top of my
- 15:43Speaker 1: the guys who've been at the coordinator level and above
- 15:45Speaker 1: Todd Downing, right, who have.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Been in other systems.
- 15:48Speaker 1: While you're shaking your head, no, okay, I'm listening, like
- 15:53Speaker 1: you have to imagine there's some input there as Josh
- 15:55Speaker 1: puts this together, so he's ultimately driving this, he's putting
- 15:58Speaker 1: it together. But yeah, uh we talked to when they
- 16:03Speaker 1: hired him. We talked about this being a little bit
- 16:05Speaker 1: of an all star staff. On the offensive side, you
- 16:07Speaker 1: have two former three former head coaches. I guess if
- 16:10Speaker 1: you want to include Doug Moroon, Thomas Brown, well interim
- 16:14Speaker 1: Thomas Brown, Thomas Brown, Doug Moron, and Josh McDaniels yep, right,
- 16:17Speaker 1: plus Todd Downing, who is a coordinator. Yeah, I feel
- 16:20Speaker 1: like I'm missing somebody. I apologize if I am, but
- 16:22Speaker 1: I feel.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Like now in terms of former like high level coaches,
- 16:26Speaker 2: you know, OC's or or head coaches. I believe that the.
- 16:29Speaker 1: The the schematic edge you would expect to have. And look,
- 16:34Speaker 1: there'still a lot of things to clean up, the turnovers,
- 16:35Speaker 1: right and all of that, but like schematically the stuff
- 16:38Speaker 1: that you love where you're like, well, I don't always Kurra.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Wins the game. I just want fun tape.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Yeah, like that side of it, is it safe to
- 16:45Speaker 1: say they've checked that box as you would expect from
- 16:47Speaker 1: a coaching staff with this much brain power hundred percent?
- 16:50Speaker 2: Why do you think I'm so giddy about all this?
- 16:51Speaker 2: Like this is this is uh, this offense and their
- 16:55Speaker 2: tape is legitimately fun to break down. Like there's so
- 16:59Speaker 2: many different things that they're doing and so many different
- 17:02Speaker 2: plays that they're running where I just look at it
- 17:05Speaker 2: them like holy hell, is at a great scheme right, Like,
- 17:08Speaker 2: even if it doesn't work because the execution isn't perfect,
- 17:11Speaker 2: I just know that they're going to come back to
- 17:13Speaker 2: certain things here that they're running where you know, like
- 17:17Speaker 2: for example, as we kind of segue into like their
- 17:19Speaker 2: early down gun package, I wanted to talk about a
- 17:22Speaker 2: little bit they ran on Sunday, and I know I
- 17:24Speaker 2: talked about this yesterday on PU and everybody made fun
- 17:26Speaker 2: of me. They ran counter bash in this game, which
- 17:30Speaker 2: is a designed quarterback option, right, it's a our option run.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Quarterback reads the end, he gives it or he keeps
- 17:37Speaker 2: it himself on the counteraction. It's actually technically inverted counter
- 17:41Speaker 2: bash because the quarterback is the one that was counter
- 17:44Speaker 2: counter's GT right guard tackle poll and then the quarterback
- 17:49Speaker 2: is actually the one that would follow the pollers. So
- 17:52Speaker 2: in this case here it's actually would be called inverted
- 17:55Speaker 2: counter bash because typically the running back would follow the
- 17:58Speaker 2: pollers in the quarterback would take it around the edge.
- 18:01Speaker 2: If the end crashes. I digress. They ran counter bash.
- 18:05Speaker 2: It only gained five yards. He handed the ball off
- 18:08Speaker 2: to Travon Henderson. He probably should have kept it, but
- 18:11Speaker 2: I think when in doubt, most quarterbacks are coached that
- 18:14Speaker 2: if you're not one hundred percent sure that you were
- 18:16Speaker 2: going to hit a big play as the runner, that
- 18:19Speaker 2: just give the ball to the running back and let
- 18:20Speaker 2: the running back take the beating and not the quarterback.
- 18:23Speaker 2: But they only gained five yards on the play, But
- 18:26Speaker 2: the fact that it's in in the different sort of
- 18:31Speaker 2: just wrinkles they had off of this one play thinking
- 18:35Speaker 2: about all the different things that they can do with
- 18:37Speaker 2: it moving forward, because now they've put it on tape.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Like they snuck Hunter Henry out on a route on
- 18:43Speaker 2: the play and he was wide open because the Panther
- 18:47Speaker 2: safety has jumped the counteraction and he was just wide
- 18:51Speaker 2: open behind the defense for a home run. Like now
- 18:54Speaker 2: they can go back to that play and they have
- 18:57Speaker 2: that in their bag now because they've put it on film.
- 18:59Speaker 2: And that's what makes their offense right now so exciting
- 19:02Speaker 2: to watch. And you know the gun stuff that you know,
- 19:05Speaker 2: obviously there's a lot of quarterback read option style plays.
- 19:10Speaker 2: They're doing a lot of that kind of stuff, Drake
- 19:13Speaker 2: May holding the backside or reading the backside and deciding
- 19:16Speaker 2: whether to give it or to keep it himself. They're
- 19:20Speaker 2: doing a lot of design rollout plays as well, which
- 19:24Speaker 2: we saw on the Hunter Henry touchdown in this last game,
- 19:27Speaker 2: and you just see the impact of Drake May's legs
- 19:30Speaker 2: on that play because two guys go to Drake Bay
- 19:32Speaker 2: and no guys go to Hunter Henry because they're worried
- 19:35Speaker 2: about him running with the football. And then they also
- 19:38Speaker 2: have this motion package that they've installed from the gun
- 19:42Speaker 2: where they're running a lot of orbit you know, when
- 19:44Speaker 2: the player just kind of goes right behind the quarterback
- 19:46Speaker 2: and orbits around the quarterback like he's the son. That's
- 19:49Speaker 2: why they call it orbit motion. So they're doing that.
- 19:52Speaker 2: They have their spinner series where he's you know, faking
- 19:55Speaker 2: it to the orbit motions and the different motions. So
- 19:59Speaker 2: this that element to their playbook. You know, the under
- 20:01Speaker 2: center stuff is classic pro style, right, but the gun
- 20:06Speaker 2: elements to the playbook in terms of the early down
- 20:08Speaker 2: offense is college style offense. This is you know, RPO
- 20:14Speaker 2: heaven like is what they're running right now with Drake May.
- 20:18Speaker 2: And so they have all these different elements and you
- 20:20Speaker 2: can just you can see obviously the window dressing is
- 20:24Speaker 2: huge with me, you know, I love that, but also
- 20:26Speaker 2: just leveraging Drake May's legs against the defense. His mobility
- 20:31Speaker 2: is now becoming a factor on every single play by design.
- 20:36Speaker 2: It's not just that he could scramble, it's that he's
- 20:39Speaker 2: holding the backside, it's that they're rolling him out of
- 20:42Speaker 2: the pocket. It's these different things that they're doing to
- 20:46Speaker 2: amplify his mobility. And you know, not to keep going
- 20:50Speaker 2: back to it, but it's just Bills week, and it's
- 20:52Speaker 2: on my mind a lot of this is what Brian
- 20:54Speaker 2: Dable did with Josh Allen, Like a lot of this
- 20:56Speaker 2: is similar to what the Bills have done with Josh Allen,
- 21:00Speaker 2: and I just look at it and I just think
- 21:02Speaker 2: it's just hitting more notes with Drake May. And then
- 21:04Speaker 2: the last bucket that I had here was just their
- 21:06Speaker 2: traditional dropback passing game, which is a lot more of
- 21:11Speaker 2: what the old McDaniel's stuff is. Like, this is when
- 21:14Speaker 2: you see a lot more of you know, the double
- 21:16Speaker 2: digs and the middle reads and the daggers and the
- 21:18Speaker 2: underformations and the bunches and like all these different stuff.
- 21:21Speaker 2: So they're doing, you know, what I want to give
- 21:24Speaker 2: flowers to in terms of the dropback stuff, Alex, is
- 21:27Speaker 2: something that you were hitting on with Todd Downing. Their
- 21:30Speaker 2: levels and spacing to their route concepts right now are
- 21:34Speaker 2: really really good. And I think some of us had
- 21:37Speaker 2: some concerns coming into the year that Todd Downing had
- 21:40Speaker 2: never coached wide receivers before, and we weren't one hundred
- 21:43Speaker 2: percent certain if that was a great higher. But I
- 21:45Speaker 2: think what's been great about the hire so far with
- 21:48Speaker 2: Downing is that he conceptually. Because of his coordinator background,
- 21:52Speaker 2: he understands how the routes fit into the bigger picture.
- 21:56Speaker 2: So he can explain to Pop Douglas and Kyle Williams, Hey,
- 22:01Speaker 2: we're going to have you run these two posts. We're
- 22:03Speaker 2: gonna have you run this Dino concept on the left
- 22:05Speaker 2: hand side here, because we're actually clearing out space for
- 22:08Speaker 2: Stefan Diggs to run a crossing route underneath the two
- 22:12Speaker 2: deep routes. And even though you might not get the
- 22:14Speaker 2: football like, your route is really important in terms of
- 22:19Speaker 2: the spacing, in terms of the way the defense plays it,
- 22:22Speaker 2: So you need to run that route like you are
- 22:25Speaker 2: going to get the football. So the two of them
- 22:27Speaker 2: take off on the left side of the formation, and
- 22:30Speaker 2: the post safety in the deep middle of the field.
- 22:32Speaker 2: He's got to stay over the top of the two
- 22:34Speaker 2: deep post routes because he has no other choice otherwise
- 22:37Speaker 2: it's going to be a sixty yard bomb over his head.
- 22:40Speaker 2: And so Stefan Diggs is just wide open underneath the
- 22:42Speaker 2: coverage running away from man to man. So these the
- 22:46Speaker 2: elements of their dropback game that I think are the
- 22:48Speaker 2: most impressive to me is how well space they are
- 22:52Speaker 2: and how well just well, frankly coordinated they have been
- 22:57Speaker 2: in that aspect, and we have not seen that really
- 23:00Speaker 2: going back all the way to twenty twenty one, Like
- 23:02Speaker 2: twenty twenty two, all the spacing and that type of
- 23:06Speaker 2: stuff started to creep up in the Patricia offense and
- 23:08Speaker 2: they never really got it out of their system. They
- 23:11Speaker 2: were never able to get that back to where it
- 23:14Speaker 2: needed to be. In short order, this coaching staff has
- 23:16Speaker 2: gotten this passing game back to where it needs to be.
- 23:21Speaker 2: And I want to talk about Drake May here in
- 23:23Speaker 2: a second. I don't know if you had any other
- 23:24Speaker 2: thoughts about that, but some of these numbers that Drake
- 23:27Speaker 2: May is putting up in the first month of the season,
- 23:30Speaker 2: you have to like remind yourself that it's only been
- 23:32Speaker 2: four games. But do you have any other thoughts on that?
- 23:34Speaker 3: Just on the schematic stuff.
- 23:35Speaker 1: And you kind of touched on the motion there from
- 23:37Speaker 1: going way back, and I apologize if you mentioned it though.
- 23:40Speaker 3: It was good. It was a lot. It was good.
- 23:43Speaker 1: The two play sequence in the second quarter. Yeah, where
- 23:46Speaker 1: so first off, and we can get into how they
- 23:49Speaker 1: used Remandra in all of that and him starting and
- 23:52Speaker 1: him playing the most snaps of any running back they've
- 23:54Speaker 1: been using a lot of two back, and this is
- 23:56Speaker 1: where I get to the elevation of the Josh McDaniels offense.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Right, they've been using a.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Lot of two back, but it's been traditional pony. It's
- 24:02Speaker 1: it's Drake May and the shotgun with a running back
- 24:05Speaker 1: on either side, or in a handful of times like
- 24:06Speaker 1: they used Antonio Gibson as a fullback, right they So
- 24:10Speaker 1: you don't know that when you're in the defense, they're
- 24:12Speaker 1: in the huddle, you're just like two backs. So they're
- 24:14Speaker 1: probably assuming, all right, they're gonna go pony he or
- 24:16Speaker 1: whatever this or that they come out. I don't know
- 24:18Speaker 1: how many times they've done it before this game, Evan,
- 24:20Speaker 1: you might have this off the top of your head
- 24:22Speaker 1: where they came out two back with the running back
- 24:25Speaker 1: out wider in the slot.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Like they definitely hadn't done it a lot before this game.
- 24:30Speaker 2: In training camp. Yeah, and so I knew that that
- 24:33Speaker 2: was in their bag, but they hadn't done it necessarily
- 24:35Speaker 2: a ton in game yet.
- 24:36Speaker 1: So they come out, they put Antonio Gibson in the slot,
- 24:39Speaker 1: Vermandra Stevenson behind Drake Manders center. They put Gibson on
- 24:44Speaker 1: the jet motion yep, hand it off to him, end around,
- 24:48Speaker 1: good blocks from Hunter Henry and Stefan Diggs. Gibson breaks
- 24:51Speaker 1: a tackle, goes to twenty one. Like great play, right,
- 24:54Speaker 1: good play. You'd show them a little bit of a
- 24:56Speaker 1: different wrinkle. They're running back in the slot. You do
- 24:58Speaker 1: the motion, but if you watch May after the handoff,
- 25:01Speaker 1: he still kind of leans and it's a fake handoff
- 25:05Speaker 1: after the real handoff, which sometimes because you see that
- 25:07Speaker 1: sometimes on like draws or whatever, and you know the
- 25:12Speaker 1: quarter or on whatever, Like it's a fake handoff after
- 25:16Speaker 1: the real handoff. But they kind of go stretch left
- 25:18Speaker 1: with Ramandre after the end around the jet sweep to
- 25:21Speaker 1: the right. So they come back the very next play.
- 25:24Speaker 1: It's not the exact same formation, but again you've it's
- 25:27Speaker 1: Travon Henderson now and stead out. Yeah, so I know
- 25:30Speaker 1: why that happened, But keep keep going Hender, Why what happened?
- 25:33Speaker 2: Why it was Henderson instead of Gibson.
- 25:35Speaker 1: But so I think it's Henderson because Okay, you hit
- 25:38Speaker 1: them with this, you know jet motion play. Now let's
- 25:42Speaker 1: put the guy in who's really the game breaker, who's
- 25:45Speaker 1: kind of the ideal person do that.
- 25:47Speaker 2: That's not why, But keep Okay, finish your post.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Be part of the reason they put him it wasn't
- 25:51Speaker 1: They put him in the in the same motion, yes,
- 25:54Speaker 1: and the entire defense comes crashing, not the entire defense,
- 25:57Speaker 1: but like the linebackers, like all come crashing down to
- 26:00Speaker 1: that motion the jet right because may even fakes the handoff.
- 26:03Speaker 1: He comes back left, stretch, run ramand right he rips
- 26:06Speaker 1: it off for twenty two. That's and talking to David
- 26:09Speaker 1: Andrews on Monday, you know, I got to get the
- 26:10Speaker 1: plug in for the Andrews podcast.
- 26:12Speaker 2: I was gonna say, what did David Andrews I think
- 26:14Speaker 2: about this game?
- 26:15Speaker 1: I was waiting, Well, so for that play is really
- 26:17Speaker 1: interesting because he kind of talked about how he can
- 26:19Speaker 1: hear like a lot of the calls in his head
- 26:20Speaker 1: when he sees him. He didn't know what that was.
- 26:22Speaker 1: That's not something they've run before. That was new, so
- 26:26Speaker 1: new wrinkle using the setup to build a shot playoff
- 26:30Speaker 1: of it.
- 26:31Speaker 3: I loved that everything about that sequence that was awesome.
- 26:34Speaker 3: But why was it?
- 26:35Speaker 2: I'll tell you in a second, But I think that
- 26:37Speaker 2: just like because I you know, I could talk about
- 26:39Speaker 2: motion all day. Yuck, Like this is my wheelhouse. This
- 26:42Speaker 2: is why and I know I sound like a broken
- 26:45Speaker 2: record when I constantly bring up motion rates and things
- 26:47Speaker 2: like that, But this is why I love it so much,
- 26:51Speaker 2: because the impact that it has on the defense, to me,
- 26:55Speaker 2: makes it's so much more like important, vital than and
- 27:00Speaker 2: maybe some of the drawbacks that it might have for
- 27:02Speaker 2: the offense, Like the drawback that it has for the
- 27:04Speaker 2: offense that I hear a lot of the time from
- 27:07Speaker 2: talking to like offensive coordinators and stuff, is that it
- 27:10Speaker 2: changes the defense's picture, right, because it's going to change
- 27:12Speaker 2: how the defense is distributing after the snap, and you
- 27:16Speaker 2: have to have a quarterback that is quick on his feet,
- 27:19Speaker 2: and I kind of can process that. Sometimes quarterbacks don't
- 27:22Speaker 2: like it, like Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers notoriously did
- 27:25Speaker 2: not like motion. They wanted stagnant formation so that they
- 27:28Speaker 2: could see the shell that the defense was in and
- 27:31Speaker 2: then make decisions because if you motion, now the shell
- 27:34Speaker 2: changes and so you have to change with it. But
- 27:38Speaker 2: that's the drawback that people say with motion. But the
- 27:42Speaker 2: benefit is exactly what you're talking about, which is that
- 27:46Speaker 2: you can really get I can't need to make defenders
- 27:50Speaker 2: bite on certain things and then you can hit them
- 27:53Speaker 2: in different places. And this is what the whole Shanahan
- 27:56Speaker 2: Tree has based their entire offense off of. Is you're
- 28:00Speaker 2: gonna be looking over here because we're going to put
- 28:02Speaker 2: all this eye candy, your window dressing over here, but
- 28:06Speaker 2: we're actually trying to throw the ball or run the
- 28:08Speaker 2: ball over there, and it's really difficult to stay home,
- 28:13Speaker 2: Like it's really difficult. And then you can also have
- 28:16Speaker 2: all these different elements off the motion that you can script.
- 28:19Speaker 2: So now they showed the jet motion with Gibson, then
- 28:23Speaker 2: they handed off to Remandre. Well, now you can play
- 28:25Speaker 2: action fake off the motion, off the off the handoff,
- 28:29Speaker 2: and now all of a sudden you just create this
- 28:31Speaker 2: like chain reaction in the defense and that's where you
- 28:34Speaker 2: really get those scripted plays going. No, the the reason
- 28:37Speaker 2: why the personnel changed was that Gibson landed on the
- 28:41Speaker 2: football on the jet notion, he got went knocked out
- 28:44Speaker 2: of him and he got he had to come out
- 28:47Speaker 2: for a couple of plays.
- 28:48Speaker 1: So do you think they run that play again with Gibson,
- 28:52Speaker 1: I like, if they were that was supposed to be
- 28:54Speaker 1: Gibson back to back.
- 28:54Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, so they's supposed to be Gibson and Remandre again.
- 28:58Speaker 3: I do think it's an ad element with Henderson his
- 29:00Speaker 3: speed there.
- 29:00Speaker 2: It ended up working out and all well in all
- 29:03Speaker 2: that elements of that too, so that that's the offense breakdown.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Hopefully I didn't overload you too much with the jargon,
- 29:10Speaker 2: but it just this toughest. I have to like remind
- 29:13Speaker 2: myself to be, you know, to remain calm about this.
- 29:19Speaker 2: And I would say the same thing about Drake May
- 29:22Speaker 2: and some of the advanced analytics in the numbers that
- 29:25Speaker 2: he is putting up right now in terms of the
- 29:27Speaker 2: efficiency we all. I feel like in some respects, I
- 29:32Speaker 2: personally am just set up for failure, Like that's just
- 29:36Speaker 2: like the way I think. So I'm just waiting for
- 29:38Speaker 2: the shoot to drop, like I'm waiting for him to
- 29:41Speaker 2: regress back to the mean or something like that. But
- 29:44Speaker 2: there is a chance, Alex that he's just good and
- 29:47Speaker 2: this is just what they're going to be. There's a chance.
- 29:50Speaker 2: The fact that I can sit here and say that
- 29:53Speaker 2: through four weeks of the season, the Patriots are third
- 29:56Speaker 2: in the league in EPA per dropback. Third in the
- 30:00Speaker 2: league in EPA per dropback on passing downs is the
- 30:05Speaker 2: Buffalo Bills, with the MVP of the league, the Green
- 30:09Speaker 2: Bay Packers and the Patriots. Like, that's incredible. I don't
- 30:13Speaker 2: care what four games stretch of the season. We were
- 30:16Speaker 2: talking about.
- 30:16Speaker 1: A lot of other teams playing bad teams too, and
- 30:18Speaker 1: they're not out there. Look, there probably is some regression
- 30:22Speaker 1: back to the mean here for this offense. This is
- 30:24Speaker 1: why I think this weekend's game is so fascinating because
- 30:28Speaker 1: they just played one of the worst teams in the
- 30:29Speaker 1: NFL and the Carolina Panthers, and blew their doors off,
- 30:31Speaker 1: which you want to see because the last couple years
- 30:33Speaker 1: they've been the team getting their doors blown up.
- 30:35Speaker 2: But we got to see what they look like.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Against the Panthers, bottom the league, and now right away
- 30:41Speaker 1: we get to see what they look like against the Bills,
- 30:42Speaker 1: which is one of the teams at the top of
- 30:43Speaker 1: the league. And so we get to come in next
- 30:46Speaker 1: week and this is going to kind of be the
- 30:48Speaker 1: big thing for me coming away from this game.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Who are they closer to?
- 30:53Speaker 1: Right, even if they don't beat the Bills, do they
- 30:57Speaker 1: look closer to Buffalo than they did to Carolina?
- 31:00Speaker 3: That sort of thing.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Yeah, He's Drake's just been really outstanding, I would say
- 31:05Speaker 2: for three straight games. Sam's two plays against Pittsburgh.
- 31:09Speaker 1: I think you can honestly say seven of the eight
- 31:13Speaker 1: halves of football he's played have been high level. Yeah,
- 31:15Speaker 1: the second half against the Raiders was still bad, but
- 31:18Speaker 1: outside of the first Avaganst Furs he was good, played
- 31:21Speaker 1: well against Miami. There's two turnovers against Pittsburgh, Like I
- 31:24Speaker 1: would say, he played well in that game. I think
- 31:26Speaker 1: that is a winning level of quarterbacking. And then obviously
- 31:29Speaker 1: played played well this week. So it's just that one
- 31:31Speaker 1: half against the Raiders.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Yeah, and I I look at it and I just
- 31:37Speaker 2: think that again, it's just a perfect marriage between the
- 31:40Speaker 2: plays they're asking him to run and his skill set
- 31:42Speaker 2: and it's allowing him to play on time, decisive, accurate
- 31:46Speaker 2: with the football. And then there also are still elements
- 31:49Speaker 2: in the offense that they're running that allow him to
- 31:52Speaker 2: make plays and get out of the pocket and do
- 31:55Speaker 2: those different types of things. But they've done a really
- 31:57Speaker 2: nice job, and Drake May's done a nice job of
- 32:00Speaker 2: kind of limiting those hero ball yolo moments where like
- 32:05Speaker 2: he just tries to do a little bit too much
- 32:07Speaker 2: and that can get him into trouble. He had one
- 32:10Speaker 2: or maybe two of those instances in this game, he
- 32:13Speaker 2: threw one over the middle of the field. It was
- 32:15Speaker 2: the one incompletion that he threw to Stefan Diggs. Where
- 32:18Speaker 2: Diggs was they were running dagger, so like middle reed
- 32:22Speaker 2: go route in the middle of the field and then
- 32:24Speaker 2: a dig from the outside receiver. They call that dagger
- 32:28Speaker 2: and Diggs just like Hunter Henry was on the fourth
- 32:32Speaker 2: down play against Pittsburgh, Diggs is wide open up the shoot.
- 32:35Speaker 2: He's they bust the coverage and he's wide open. But
- 32:38Speaker 2: Drake May has pressure in his lap and he tried
- 32:42Speaker 2: to jump throw it off two feet like his two
- 32:44Speaker 2: feet were both off the ground and he ended up
- 32:46Speaker 2: dirting it. Not the worst outcome that could possibly happen,
- 32:50Speaker 2: but those are when I see him throw from those
- 32:52Speaker 2: like wonky basses and platforms. I'm like, I don't know
- 32:56Speaker 2: if we need him to do that anymore, Like maybe
- 32:58Speaker 2: you need to do that last year when you just
- 33:00Speaker 2: start trying to do anything that you can to move
- 33:03Speaker 2: the football. I'm not sure they need him to do
- 33:05Speaker 2: that now, Like he can do it conventionally, but the
- 33:09Speaker 2: amount of conventional offense that he is doing everything is
- 33:13Speaker 2: in terms of their passing game right now, you know.
- 33:16Speaker 2: I know a lot of people talk about, well, when
- 33:18Speaker 2: you boot like you're cutting the field in half and
- 33:20Speaker 2: that makes it easier for the quarterback, and YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Well a lot of that too, is the defense is
- 33:27Speaker 2: reacting because he's an athlete like that. It doesn't work
- 33:31Speaker 2: if you don't have a mobile quarterback like Drake May
- 33:35Speaker 2: being the one that's booting. Like, if you have a
- 33:37Speaker 2: quarterback like Mac Jones on a bootleg, then it's not
- 33:40Speaker 2: necessarily going to have the same impact on the defense
- 33:43Speaker 2: that a guy like Drake May can have on the defense.
- 33:45Speaker 2: So so much of what they're doing is leveraging off
- 33:49Speaker 2: of Drake May's physical talent and raw ability. I didn't
- 33:53Speaker 2: necessarily know this game was tough because he only had
- 33:55Speaker 2: twenty one dropbacks, So it wasn't like he had this
- 33:59Speaker 2: game where a I had him with like fifteen plus
- 34:01Speaker 2: plays because he had fifty dropbacks and there was a
- 34:04Speaker 2: whole bunch of plays to come out of it. But
- 34:06Speaker 2: in some ways, I kind of like that there's not
- 34:09Speaker 2: a lot of volatility right now where I'm just looking
- 34:11Speaker 2: at it, I'm like, yeah, like, that's an NFL quarterback
- 34:14Speaker 2: should make that throw. And he's making it. But that's
- 34:16Speaker 2: telling you that the scheme is working and the plays
- 34:19Speaker 2: that they're running or working.
- 34:20Speaker 1: It's consistency. And so what I've been hammering since the
- 34:23Speaker 1: beginning with him just has to be more consistent.
- 34:25Speaker 3: He's doing it all right.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Now that I've waxed poetic about the offense, because which
- 34:30Speaker 2: was fun, don't get me wrong, I want to move
- 34:32Speaker 2: on to a couple of things on the good side
- 34:34Speaker 2: for the defense and just kind of talk about one
- 34:36Speaker 2: thing philosophically with the defense before we do that, because
- 34:39Speaker 2: that could be a bigger discussion. We wasn't an uproar
- 34:43Speaker 2: down in this game. I didn't feel like, but Christian
- 34:45Speaker 2: Zalez returning is just a good, good element. He played
- 34:49Speaker 2: all three quarters that the starters played in this game,
- 34:52Speaker 2: so he didn't have to come off the field at
- 34:53Speaker 2: all in those snaps. So even though I think he
- 34:56Speaker 2: probably played like seventy percent of the snaps, this deceiving
- 34:58Speaker 2: because they pulled the starters in the fourth quarter, so
- 35:02Speaker 2: he was not limited. He was not on a snap
- 35:05Speaker 2: count or a pitch count or anything like that. Was
- 35:08Speaker 2: a little bit rusty. McMillan's a good player like Ted's
- 35:10Speaker 2: gonna be a good receiver in this league. But he
- 35:13Speaker 2: was maybe a little bit rusty. But in general, I
- 35:16Speaker 2: just think it's a good thing overall that Gonzo's healthy.
- 35:21Speaker 2: His conditioning seems good enough to play one hundred, you know,
- 35:24Speaker 2: close to one hundred percent of the snaps. And this
- 35:26Speaker 2: was a good game to get his feet wet because
- 35:28Speaker 2: no offense to the Carolina Panthers not exactly the greatest
- 35:31Speaker 2: show on turf. So now that we build up to
- 35:34Speaker 2: the Bills this week, it's good that he had this
- 35:36Speaker 2: one game under his belt before you throw him in
- 35:38Speaker 2: there against Buffalo. So what did you What did you
- 35:41Speaker 2: think about Gonzalez's return?
- 35:43Speaker 1: I so, yeah, I think the big thing, like you said,
- 35:46Speaker 1: he played essentially the whole game. He played as long
- 35:48Speaker 1: as the starters are out there, so this isn't going
- 35:50Speaker 1: to be a ramp up in terms of conditioning or
- 35:52Speaker 1: anything like that. I actually thought the Panthers were one
- 35:55Speaker 1: of the few things out credit Panthers for in this game.
- 35:57Speaker 1: They were smart to test him with a comeback early
- 35:59Speaker 1: on right, make him put his foot in the ground
- 36:01Speaker 1: and push off and go off that hamstring. And that's
- 36:05Speaker 1: the one play where he really gets beat, he allowed
- 36:06Speaker 1: another catch, but it's like underneath wrap and tackle you.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Live with that.
- 36:10Speaker 1: So need a more this week for sure, like you said,
- 36:14Speaker 1: but I it is solid, solid return. You know, nothing
- 36:19Speaker 1: mind blowing, But I think you kind of saw everything
- 36:22Speaker 1: you needed to see with him to not be nervous
- 36:25Speaker 1: about him long term and you go from there.
- 36:26Speaker 2: Yeah, And I'm just really excited about seeing how moving
- 36:32Speaker 2: forward they're going to game plan with Christian Zalez and
- 36:35Speaker 2: Carlton Davis, because I don't feel like this game was
- 36:38Speaker 2: that fully unleashed just yet in terms of, no, we're
- 36:42Speaker 2: going up against a team where we really like our
- 36:44Speaker 2: advantage of the corners over the receivers. They probably did
- 36:47Speaker 2: in this game too, but it just is gonna be
- 36:49Speaker 2: fun to see now that when they go up against
- 36:51Speaker 2: the guy like Josh Allen, like how the vision of
- 36:55Speaker 2: how they envisioned in the off season of using this
- 36:58Speaker 2: cornerback tandem and then actually implementing that in a real game.
- 37:02Speaker 2: And then the other thing I had down here for
- 37:05Speaker 2: the defense was, you know, they played pretty good defense
- 37:08Speaker 2: after the opening script. I have some quibbles with the
- 37:11Speaker 2: defense in this game that I thought the score kind
- 37:14Speaker 2: of washed away some of the of the stuff that
- 37:17Speaker 2: didn't go so well for the defense. But the defense
- 37:20Speaker 2: after the opening script, you know, was what it was. Obviously,
- 37:23Speaker 2: they basically went three quarters without giving up points in
- 37:28Speaker 2: this game. They give up the opening drive touchdown, they
- 37:30Speaker 2: give up the garbage time touchdown to Andy Dollon, they
- 37:33Speaker 2: went the entire time in between without giving up any points.
- 37:36Speaker 2: I thought, what was really good about the defense other
- 37:38Speaker 2: than the individual players, which we'll get to, but they
- 37:41Speaker 2: won all of the important downs in the middle of
- 37:45Speaker 2: the field. Like once the Panthers crossed over into Patriots territory,
- 37:49Speaker 2: the Patriots were able to hold them out of scoring
- 37:52Speaker 2: territory and really lockdown defensively to keep them out of
- 37:56Speaker 2: getting points in those situations, which was really good to see.
- 38:00Speaker 2: My facilitation question for you, is this feels like in
- 38:06Speaker 2: this at times? The Patriots defense under Bill Belichick was
- 38:09Speaker 2: just this exactly the same way. This feels like a
- 38:13Speaker 2: defense that's a we're gonna let the game declaire kind
- 38:16Speaker 2: of defense. So the Raiders, the Steelers, and now the
- 38:23Speaker 2: Panthers all scored on their opening drive all three games
- 38:27Speaker 2: at home, by the way, all scored on their opening
- 38:29Speaker 2: drive touchdowns right down the field and then, for whatever
- 38:33Speaker 2: reason they talked a lot about in the postgame locker room,
- 38:37Speaker 2: the first fifteen the scripted plays, the Panthers ran like
- 38:41Speaker 2: four or five plays, got on the other side of
- 38:43Speaker 2: the fifty yard line, stalled out, and that was all
- 38:46Speaker 2: she wrote for the rest of the game. For Bryce
- 38:48Speaker 2: Young in Carolina, do you have a problem with them
- 38:52Speaker 2: being an in game adjustments kind of defense, because I
- 38:56Speaker 2: don't really have a problem with that now. The only difference, though,
- 38:59Speaker 2: I would say, is that the Patriots in the Dynasty
- 39:02Speaker 2: era were able to do that because the offense was
- 39:05Speaker 2: gonna score, right. So if you get down fourteen to
- 39:08Speaker 2: nothing like they did against Pittsburgh, the Patriots knew Tom
- 39:11Speaker 2: Brady was gonna come back.
- 39:12Speaker 1: So yeah, there's layers to this, and I wonder if
- 39:14Speaker 1: that's why I've Rabel took the ball last week against
- 39:17Speaker 1: the Steelers. I don't mind them being an adjusting defense,
- 39:22Speaker 1: but that's not that's not carte blanche to just be
- 39:29Speaker 1: bad in the beginning, right, allow opening drive scores like yeah,
- 39:32Speaker 1: because when you start facing some of these better teams,
- 39:34Speaker 1: like yeah, you let the Panthers get up seven, I
- 39:36Speaker 1: guess six, nothing you can come back from that when
- 39:39Speaker 1: you get to the Bills, When you get to the
- 39:41Speaker 1: Bucks in a few weeks, the Ravens later in the year,
- 39:43Speaker 1: when you're getting in the playoff games in a year
- 39:45Speaker 1: or two, like, you can't be doing that on a
- 39:47Speaker 1: regular basis. So yeah, I think they should adjust as
- 39:51Speaker 1: the game goes on, but they do got to come
- 39:53Speaker 1: out with a little bit more. You can't keep allowing
- 39:56Speaker 1: first drive touchdowns every single game. That's not sustainable.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Yeah, so you know, to go to the bads. Just
- 40:02Speaker 2: to segue into it, the opening drive for the Panthers
- 40:06Speaker 2: in this game, they averaged ten yards of play on
- 40:08Speaker 2: the opening drive. Carolina did just went right down the
- 40:11Speaker 2: field on the Patriots, and I thought there were a
- 40:13Speaker 2: couple of different things that they did that gave the
- 40:16Speaker 2: Patriots problems schematically that I am sure teams will try
- 40:20Speaker 2: to replicate and hit on moving forward. The one thing
- 40:23Speaker 2: that really popped up in this game to me, and
- 40:26Speaker 2: again you know, not to keep bringing up Buffalo, but
- 40:29Speaker 2: with James Cook in that Bill's running game, they had
- 40:32Speaker 2: a tough time setting the edge in this game. Defensively,
- 40:35Speaker 2: they gave up over seven yards of carry on runs
- 40:37Speaker 2: outside the tackles in this game to Carolina. And this
- 40:40Speaker 2: is not a Carolina rushing attack that is great shakes
- 40:45Speaker 2: like the Bill's rushing attack. Number one team in the
- 40:47Speaker 2: league in pretty much every rushing category. So you're about
- 40:50Speaker 2: to go up a notch in competition. I don't know,
- 40:55Speaker 2: and I asked they're outside linebackers coach this question. I
- 40:59Speaker 2: think it was last week. Of course I'm blaying on
- 41:01Speaker 2: his name. I'll look it up in a second. He
- 41:04Speaker 2: said that this is all by design and none of
- 41:06Speaker 2: it is like Smith, Yes, Mike Smith. None of this
- 41:09Speaker 2: is you know, freelanced or anything like that. But the ends,
- 41:13Speaker 2: you know, Chason and Landry are slipping inside the tackles
- 41:17Speaker 2: a lot. They are like kind of stunting or slanting inside,
- 41:21Speaker 2: trying to hunt those tackles for loss. And that's all
- 41:23Speaker 2: well and good if you replace the edge, right, if
- 41:27Speaker 2: a linebacker or nickel corner or something like that is
- 41:30Speaker 2: gonna set the edge of the defense so that Landry
- 41:33Speaker 2: and Chaison can slip into the backfield and go inside
- 41:37Speaker 2: the B gap, that's all well and good. But they
- 41:40Speaker 2: aren't resetting the edge, and so they're kind of losing
- 41:44Speaker 2: the edge a lot. Now, Belichick. This would drive Bill crazy,
- 41:47Speaker 2: Like Bill would be like, we're not why you going
- 41:49Speaker 2: inside the tackle, Like we're gonna set the edge. We're
- 41:52Speaker 2: gonna take a bucket step, We're gonna get up, you know,
- 41:54Speaker 2: a yard up the field, and we're gonna sit on
- 41:56Speaker 2: the edge. Right, that's what we're gonna do. They aren't
- 42:00Speaker 2: really schematically, they're not doing it that way right now,
- 42:04Speaker 2: so they either need to go back to doing it
- 42:06Speaker 2: that way or they need to find a better way
- 42:08Speaker 2: to get the force right to get that edge set
- 42:11Speaker 2: to the defense. So that was one of them. The
- 42:14Speaker 2: other thing that I've seen a little bit on film
- 42:17Speaker 2: with them, they're matching a lot of their zones backside,
- 42:21Speaker 2: so the backside corner is carrying the receiver backside like
- 42:25Speaker 2: it's man to man coverage, and then the passing strength
- 42:28Speaker 2: is playing zone coverage and that is leaving the flat
- 42:32Speaker 2: like wide open on the backside of the formation. So
- 42:35Speaker 2: not to pick on him, but a lot of those
- 42:38Speaker 2: passes are completed on Christian Ellis right now, and Ellis's
- 42:42Speaker 2: eyes seem to like be in the backfield in the
- 42:44Speaker 2: middle of the field, and they're not getting numbers out
- 42:48Speaker 2: to that flat. So the Panthers multiple times hit the
- 42:52Speaker 2: flats on the back side of the formation. So these
- 42:55Speaker 2: are just things that consistently happen against Carolina that the
- 43:00Speaker 2: Panthers are not good enough to sustain offense and make
- 43:03Speaker 2: you really hurt for these things. But as the competition
- 43:06Speaker 2: ramps up here a little bit, UH, teams are going
- 43:08Speaker 2: to be better at hitting on these weakness is last
- 43:11Speaker 2: one really quickly. They move Tech McMillan in the slot
- 43:15Speaker 2: a little bit in this game, and there was more
- 43:17Speaker 2: than one occasion where Jalen Hawkins was on Tech McMillan
- 43:20Speaker 2: in the slot. So they're not traveling as often with
- 43:24Speaker 2: their corners and not moving the corners as often inside.
- 43:27Speaker 2: If that's what you're gonna do again, Like teams are
- 43:30Speaker 2: going to realize, oh, if we put our number one
- 43:33Speaker 2: receiver in the slot and you know, the number three
- 43:36Speaker 2: spot in a three by one formation in the slot,
- 43:40Speaker 2: he's going to get covered by a safety and we're
- 43:42Speaker 2: going to love that matchup.
- 43:43Speaker 3: Well, that's where I'm wondering what they're gonna do with Dalton Kinkaid.
- 43:45Speaker 2: This week, right, you know, whether it's you know, a
- 43:47Speaker 2: player like that that's a pass catching tight end, whether
- 43:51Speaker 2: it's a player like McMillan that has flexibility to go inside,
- 43:54Speaker 2: you know, not that I think that he's you know,
- 43:56Speaker 2: you know how I feel about Keon Coleman. But Keon
- 43:58Speaker 2: Cohen has the ability to run routes as like a
- 44:01Speaker 2: big slot or a power slot too. So these are
- 44:04Speaker 2: just things that you know. Vrabel said after the game,
- 44:07Speaker 2: they did a good job. Carolina did a moving guys
- 44:09Speaker 2: around early on in the game. I think that's what
- 44:11Speaker 2: he was talking about with Ted. The other thing that
- 44:14Speaker 2: he said is that they're going to have to do
- 44:15Speaker 2: a better job at disguising defensively, and I think right
- 44:18Speaker 2: now it's pretty easy to decipher what exactly the Patriots
- 44:22Speaker 2: are doing defensively, so they're going to have to ramp
- 44:24Speaker 2: up some of that to improve on defense. What did
- 44:28Speaker 2: you think of the defense in this game? Was I
- 44:30Speaker 2: thought that this score was a little bit misleading for
- 44:32Speaker 2: how they played defense.
- 44:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you hit on a lot of it, you know,
- 44:35Speaker 1: the slow starts obviously concerning I think they buckled down
- 44:39Speaker 1: in the middle. The big thing to me with this
- 44:40Speaker 1: defense right now when they rush for and I thought
- 44:43Speaker 1: they're going to be more blitz heavy than they've been
- 44:45Speaker 1: maybe that was just a Terro Williams thing, and Zach
- 44:49Speaker 1: Krr kind of has a different philosophy when he's calling
- 44:50Speaker 1: these plays. But when they rush for it's been very streaky.
- 44:57Speaker 1: And when they get going in when Milton Williams and
- 44:59Speaker 1: Christian and Harold Lander and Caleb On Chase On, like
- 45:02Speaker 1: when they get in a rhythm, it's every play they're
- 45:06Speaker 1: getting back there, impacting the quarterback every play, But there's
- 45:08Speaker 1: stretches they'll go a driver too, especially early in games
- 45:11Speaker 1: where you really don't see much. That's to me where
- 45:14Speaker 1: this game changed for the defense. They weren't getting any
- 45:17Speaker 1: pressure on Bryce Young until that really that third drive
- 45:20Speaker 1: right and once they got it, it didn't really stop.
- 45:24Speaker 1: But they weren't doing much early in the game. So
- 45:27Speaker 1: I just want to see I want to be careful
- 45:30Speaker 1: about how I say this, Like the numbers are already
- 45:33Speaker 1: pretty immense. I don't know, it's hard to ask that
- 45:39Speaker 1: group to do more because I think that group's done
- 45:41Speaker 1: a ton, but it's been very like a ton here
- 45:44Speaker 1: and then none and then a ton here, and it's
- 45:46Speaker 1: just like, can you just level it out a little
- 45:48Speaker 1: bit more? Obviously, if they're playing at that if it's
- 45:50Speaker 1: just a ton all the time. That would be awesome, right,
- 45:52Speaker 1: but it just feels like there's some moments and blitzing
- 45:55Speaker 1: has jump.
- 45:56Speaker 3: Started that at times.
- 45:57Speaker 1: So maybe some more timely blitzes to get at that
- 46:00Speaker 1: group up front going, maybe some disguise helps with that
- 46:03Speaker 1: team start preparing for the blitz that isn't there. That's
- 46:05Speaker 1: what happened on the big Milt Williams didn't.
- 46:09Speaker 3: Get the sack.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Calevon chase On got the sack, but Milt Williams came
- 46:12Speaker 1: right up the middle of Bright Young basically just fell over,
- 46:15Speaker 1: sacked himself.
- 46:17Speaker 3: Chase On touched him down.
- 46:19Speaker 1: I think that's kind of what happened there because if
- 46:20Speaker 1: you watch the center, he goes to block nobody and
- 46:23Speaker 1: even the guard kind of lets Milton Williams through and
- 46:26Speaker 1: looks the block. He doesn't follow Milt Williams around after
- 46:29Speaker 1: he gets beat. He stays in his pass set even
- 46:31Speaker 1: though there's nobody else coming. I wonder if he was
- 46:32Speaker 1: expecting a linebacker. So that's a big thing for me
- 46:36Speaker 1: with the defense right now. Like I think some of
- 46:38Speaker 1: the coverage just uses. Gonzalez gets back and they figure
- 46:41Speaker 1: some things out. You're right, they gotta do a better
- 46:42Speaker 1: job when guys going the slot of traveling. I think
- 46:45Speaker 1: it's probably Gonzales when another team's going to put a
- 46:47Speaker 1: number another wide receiver and a Number one wide receiver
- 46:50Speaker 1: in the slot.
- 46:50Speaker 2: I mean they did you know Gonzales covered ten a
- 46:53Speaker 2: few times? He did it, Yeah, in the slot. Ted
- 46:56Speaker 2: caught that back shoulder from the slot.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Doing that a little more moving Carlton Davison's side on
- 47:00Speaker 1: big slot receivers or even tight ends occasionally things like that.
- 47:03Speaker 2: But maybe that's uh, that might be like post Halloween.
- 47:09Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe that's something that comes.
- 47:11Speaker 2: This is sort of the base of what they're trying
- 47:13Speaker 2: to do, and they're trying to get you know, that
- 47:15Speaker 2: established and trying to get everybody on the same page,
- 47:18Speaker 2: and that sort of.
- 47:19Speaker 1: The big thing for me though, And again, I like,
- 47:21Speaker 1: I want to stress this enough. The front has been
- 47:25Speaker 1: really good. The pass rush has been really good. When
- 47:28Speaker 1: it's really good.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Yeah, they're, like I just twelfth right now in pressure
- 47:32Speaker 2: rate as a team, which is good, I mean much
- 47:34Speaker 2: better than was Loud, Yeah, significantly.
- 47:36Speaker 1: I don't know, I'm curious how you feel about this. Like,
- 47:38Speaker 1: I just think a little more consistency from that group. Again,
- 47:42Speaker 1: you're not going to get pressure on every play. I
- 47:44Speaker 1: just think the dry spells are going maybe a little
- 47:47Speaker 1: longer than they should for what this group is.
- 47:50Speaker 2: So I see what, you know, a little bit of
- 47:53Speaker 2: a small sea concern that we had about this defensive line,
- 47:56Speaker 2: which I think has been an outstanding on the whole,
- 47:58Speaker 2: but just the little small sea concern that we had
- 48:02Speaker 2: was do they have like a true one on one
- 48:05Speaker 2: pass rush guy on the outside right? You know, they know,
- 48:08Speaker 2: we know about Milton Williams and Christian Barmore, who are
- 48:11Speaker 2: on my ups and we're fantastic in this game for
- 48:13Speaker 2: the most part. But what we're seeing a lot of
- 48:16Speaker 2: now is, you know, teams are starting to pay a
- 48:18Speaker 2: lot of extra attention to those two guys. Yeah, you know,
- 48:21Speaker 2: they're kind of switching off on who's getting double teamed
- 48:23Speaker 2: and who's getting the slide side and who's getting the
- 48:25Speaker 2: man side, and like all that different type of nuance
- 48:28Speaker 2: on the interior of the offensive line that is now
- 48:31Speaker 2: being game planned for. Like Millon Williams, and this is
- 48:34Speaker 2: a good thing. Like Milon Williams and Christian Barmore are
- 48:37Speaker 2: Tuesday players, Like they are guys that teams are going
- 48:40Speaker 2: into the game saying we cannot allow these two guys
- 48:43Speaker 2: to wreck the game. But that really kind of puts
- 48:46Speaker 2: Harold Landry and calebon Chase on in the spotlight where
- 48:49Speaker 2: you're going to get a lot of one on ones
- 48:51Speaker 2: on the tackles, and do the Patriots have a true
- 48:55Speaker 2: one on one winner in the pass rush? I had
- 48:58Speaker 2: on the edge that probably frankly in need in the
- 49:02Speaker 2: offseason that we're gonna gonais. Yeah, like that that's right
- 49:08Speaker 2: up there with number one wide receiver. If you really
- 49:11Speaker 2: want this defense to take that next step is can
- 49:13Speaker 2: you draft or sign or whatever a guy that can
- 49:17Speaker 2: truly go out there and when he gets a one
- 49:19Speaker 2: on one, he's winning, And that that maybe is what
- 49:23Speaker 2: you we're missing right now from the pass rush and
- 49:25Speaker 2: the four man rushes and the standard four man rushes is. Yeah,
- 49:28Speaker 2: like Barmore and and Williams are going to create havoc,
- 49:32Speaker 2: but they're not sacked guys like they're not. They're not
- 49:34Speaker 2: gonna be double digit sack players. They're gonna be disruptive,
- 49:40Speaker 2: creating havoc type of players. So they need those edges
- 49:43Speaker 2: to to maybe be a little bit more one on
- 49:46Speaker 2: one winning in the four man rush just to move
- 49:49Speaker 2: back over to the offense and then uh, we're gonna
- 49:52Speaker 2: We're gonna move on from the good the bad, at
- 49:53Speaker 2: the stuff that gets you beat, because there's not much
- 49:56Speaker 2: to talk about in the bad category. I do want
- 49:58Speaker 2: to talk a little bit about the run game on offense.
- 50:01Speaker 2: The numbers are not good Alex right now for the
- 50:04Speaker 2: rush offense, they are thirty second in the league and
- 50:07Speaker 2: EPA upper rush there last in the league in rush
- 50:10Speaker 2: EPA they only had a twenty six percent success rate
- 50:13Speaker 2: in this game against the Panthers. And if you want
- 50:17Speaker 2: the traditional SATs, you know taking out Drake May runs, Yeah,
- 50:21Speaker 2: traditional runs, jet motions, traditional runs. Three point one yards
- 50:25Speaker 2: of carry in this game just on traditional runs and
- 50:29Speaker 2: that includes r Mandre having a twenty two yard run.
- 50:31Speaker 2: So it just hasn't been very good with traditional runs.
- 50:35Speaker 2: And I just wonder, you know, where you see because
- 50:40Speaker 2: this is always a chicken or the egg thing with
- 50:42Speaker 2: the running game. Is it the backs or is it
- 50:44Speaker 2: the blocking. It's always a little bit of both. And
- 50:47Speaker 2: I went back and watched all there between the twenties
- 50:50Speaker 2: stuffs and to really examine whether or not you know
- 50:53Speaker 2: what's going on I don't think that there's necessarily a
- 50:57Speaker 2: ton of room. There's probably a little bit more room
- 51:00Speaker 2: once they sort of get used to cutting off the
- 51:02Speaker 2: blocks and things like that on these outside zone plays.
- 51:05Speaker 2: There probably were a few cutback lanes that the backs
- 51:08Speaker 2: missed in this game. But I don't necessarily think that
- 51:12Speaker 2: there was like one hundred and fifty yards of rushing
- 51:15Speaker 2: offense that they left on the table. Just what has
- 51:17Speaker 2: been your take there, Because when you look at all
- 51:19Speaker 2: the charts, the passing offense is like all the way
- 51:22Speaker 2: over here, you know, bottom top right is good. Yeah,
- 51:25Speaker 2: in the pass offense. In the rush offense is putting
- 51:28Speaker 2: them in the bottom right because the pass offense is
- 51:30Speaker 2: really good, but the rush offense is really really bad.
- 51:34Speaker 1: I still feel like maybe the backs are missing a
- 51:37Speaker 1: little bit of feel like they're just kind of running
- 51:40Speaker 1: into contact. Like you said, I think there's been some room.
- 51:42Speaker 1: It could be better, but I think there's been more
- 51:46Speaker 1: room that's been there. It's like you said, I don't
- 51:49Speaker 1: think it's any one thing. There's been times there's been
- 51:52Speaker 1: holes to hit that haven't been hit. There's been times
- 51:54Speaker 1: that there.
- 51:54Speaker 3: Just hasn't been holes.
- 51:56Speaker 1: It just the whole thing just feels a little disconnected
- 51:58Speaker 1: right now, and that's something I want. Or as they
- 52:00Speaker 1: go on and the backs get more chemistry with the
- 52:02Speaker 1: line and Josh McDaniels gets a better feel for the
- 52:06Speaker 1: line and how they're blocking it, if that comes along,
- 52:09Speaker 1: But they do have to get that run game going.
- 52:11Speaker 1: And I mean we can do the whole thing about
- 52:12Speaker 1: Drake may design runs again. Yeah, I mean they really
- 52:14Speaker 1: haven't called a lot of those.
- 52:15Speaker 2: You just can't be one dimensional like this forever. Like
- 52:18Speaker 2: it's not they're balanced enough that they're not getting stuffed
- 52:22Speaker 2: a lot.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Can I just pause every second?
- 52:24Speaker 1: Yeah, we're talking about Yeah, the Patriots pass game is good,
- 52:27Speaker 1: but dang, they need to run the ball better.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Yeah they do.
- 52:29Speaker 1: Who would have thought they do need to run this?
- 52:31Speaker 1: It's been a minute since we've talked about them.
- 52:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so they're they're not getting stuffed a lot, like,
- 52:37Speaker 2: they're not getting a lot of you know.
- 52:38Speaker 3: They don't negative runs.
- 52:40Speaker 1: They just kind of it's these two to three yard
- 52:42Speaker 1: gains and that's it.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Right, And so that allows you to keep running the
- 52:45Speaker 2: ball right when you're not getting stuffed a ton and
- 52:48Speaker 2: you're not getting those negative runs. But they haven't really broken,
- 52:52Speaker 2: you know, big ones or ones that really inflate those
- 52:56Speaker 2: statistics that I brought up. So whenever you're thirty second
- 52:59Speaker 2: in the and anything that's not good. Yeah, and they're
- 53:02Speaker 2: dead last in the NFL right now in rush EPA,
- 53:05Speaker 2: so that has to improve. Last last one here. I
- 53:08Speaker 2: you know, I had this in the bad category, You're
- 53:10Speaker 2: gonna have it in the stuff that gets you beat.
- 53:13Speaker 2: Seven more penalties in this game. Fifty four yards, two
- 53:17Speaker 2: penalties by first down by penalties, So not terrible in
- 53:21Speaker 2: that category, but the penalties are still creeping up. There's
- 53:25Speaker 2: still top ten in the league in terms of penalties
- 53:27Speaker 2: called against them. It's a it's a it's a problem.
- 53:30Speaker 2: Like I'm not trying to say it's not a problem.
- 53:32Speaker 2: They need to get that cleaned up.
- 53:34Speaker 1: So I have an interesting take on the penalties here.
- 53:37Speaker 1: So they've they've been called for a lot of penalties,
- 53:40Speaker 1: but the officials that they've had this year.
- 53:44Speaker 2: You making excuses for them. It's penalty.
- 53:46Speaker 1: It's not excuses, it's just well, all right, let me
- 53:49Speaker 1: get the whole taken. So they've had Tolbert Ron Tolbert,
- 53:52Speaker 1: Alex Moore, Clete Blakeman, Bill Vinovich, yep, those refs rank
- 53:57Speaker 1: and this isn't in the exact order, but first, second, fourth,
- 54:03Speaker 1: and tenth in flags thrown this year. So they're getting
- 54:07Speaker 1: crews that have thrown a lot of flags.
- 54:09Speaker 3: Now it's early in the year.
- 54:10Speaker 1: So there's the Patriots game makes up a quarter of
- 54:13Speaker 1: that sample size.
- 54:15Speaker 3: Chicken or the egg.
- 54:16Speaker 1: Are the Patriots getting refs that are flag happy or
- 54:19Speaker 1: do these refs look flag happy because the Patriots are
- 54:23Speaker 1: committing a lot of penalties.
- 54:24Speaker 2: This is so these games are getting way too So
- 54:28Speaker 2: here's the gauge.
- 54:29Speaker 3: Here's the gauge. How many.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Penalties are called on the other team in these games.
- 54:36Speaker 1: And so this game is pretty lopsided towards Patriots, Steelers game,
- 54:41Speaker 1: Dolphins game. In the Raiders game it was relatively even.
- 54:46Speaker 1: So we'll have to see moving on.
- 54:50Speaker 2: Now.
- 54:50Speaker 1: Look, here's where I'm gonna say it's it's not an excuse.
- 54:55Speaker 1: These guys know every week, like the coaching staff briefs them.
- 54:58Speaker 1: And it's not just these guys call a lot of penalties.
- 54:59Speaker 3: He guys don't.
- 55:00Speaker 1: Hey, this crew is a little tighter when it comes
- 55:03Speaker 1: to pass interference. Hey, this cruise little tighter when it
- 55:06Speaker 1: comes to holding or this cruise, a little looser on this,
- 55:08Speaker 1: this cruise a little looser on that, and then once
- 55:10Speaker 1: the game happens, even if it is maybe something a
- 55:13Speaker 1: little different, you still need to know. Okay, like early on,
- 55:19Speaker 1: I got called for a borderline pass interference.
- 55:22Speaker 3: That's how they're calling it.
- 55:23Speaker 1: And maybe you see the other team got called for
- 55:24Speaker 1: it too, that's how they're calling it. Like, you have
- 55:25Speaker 1: to adjust and do that within the game. So the
- 55:28Speaker 1: penalty numbers do absolutely need to come down. But I
- 55:32Speaker 1: also wonder if there's an element of it being so
- 55:35Speaker 1: high that simply they're getting a lot of these refs
- 55:42Speaker 1: that are flag happy. So I was trying to find
- 55:44Speaker 1: this number year.
- 55:45Speaker 3: I have it.
- 55:45Speaker 1: So they've been called for thirty five penalties this year.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Their opponents have been called for thirty two. Yeah, so
- 55:52Speaker 1: I do think some of this is the referees. But
- 55:57Speaker 1: again you got to know, Okay, these refs are flag
- 55:59Speaker 1: hap Like the borderline stuff.
- 56:01Speaker 3: I can't go there. I don't have that edge in
- 56:03Speaker 3: this game.
- 56:04Speaker 2: So the one thing I'll say about the penalties and
- 56:06Speaker 2: then we're going to break and we'll do and.
- 56:08Speaker 1: By the way, sorry, by the way, just to put
- 56:09Speaker 1: the ball on that They have Sean hockey Ley this week,
- 56:12Speaker 1: who is the sixth most flag happy ref in the NFL.
- 56:15Speaker 2: He he loves to hear his own. That guy loves
- 56:17Speaker 2: himself a little bit too much for me, and I
- 56:20Speaker 2: will say that I shouldn't say things like that, but
- 56:23Speaker 2: the officials like are really starting to get under my skin.
- 56:26Speaker 3: Well there's another side.
- 56:27Speaker 2: It's just really too much guys, like we need to
- 56:31Speaker 2: these games. Let the players decide the games. And I'm
- 56:34Speaker 2: not saying that there's these like blatant penalties that are
- 56:37Speaker 2: like literally costing games that I'm seeing every single week. Necessarily,
- 56:41Speaker 2: it's just the whole thing. So I'll say this, it's
- 56:44Speaker 2: on the whole.
- 56:45Speaker 1: There's another side of the referee thing that I complain
- 56:47Speaker 1: about that because you know my rule on complaining about
- 56:50Speaker 1: the refs in terms of deciding the outcome of the game,
- 56:52Speaker 1: you get one a year all sports.
- 56:54Speaker 2: And this isn't about the paper, it's not the product.
- 56:57Speaker 3: So this is this is my thing. Like Ron Tour
- 57:00Speaker 3: did Week one, there were a lot of flags in
- 57:02Speaker 3: that game, but credit toront Torbert and his crew.
- 57:04Speaker 1: They throw the flag, play ends whistled. He'd quickly get
- 57:06Speaker 1: the signal from whoever threw it, call it you move on.
- 57:09Speaker 1: It didn't drag the game down. A couple of weeks
- 57:11Speaker 1: ago into Pittsburgh cleat Blakeman's crew, it was like a
- 57:13Speaker 1: forty second conference every time, and and and they had
- 57:17Speaker 1: to discuss and debate it, like no, keep you gotta
- 57:21Speaker 1: keep it moving. You got if you're gonna throw all
- 57:23Speaker 1: you know what you're calling and keep going all.
- 57:25Speaker 2: Of these like ticki tac. You know, you know, I'm
- 57:29Speaker 2: a big Ted Carris guy. Ted carri is like bobbing
- 57:31Speaker 2: his head a little bit too, like much.
- 57:35Speaker 3: So there's side of it.
- 57:36Speaker 2: No, and then like all these like alignment penalties and
- 57:39Speaker 2: things like that. You know, the one thing that I
- 57:42Speaker 2: don't want to make excuses for for the Patriots, Yeah,
- 57:44Speaker 2: can we line up on side?
- 57:46Speaker 3: They keep on off side? That's on them.
- 57:47Speaker 2: That and it's they're lining up off side, like you
- 57:52Speaker 2: can see it from the overhead angle. You can see
- 57:55Speaker 2: it from the dots on next gen like Harold Landry
- 57:58Speaker 2: was off side. Like this is what it is.
- 58:00Speaker 1: This is a separate rant. It's like there's two things
- 58:03Speaker 1: you want from an official number one consistency. I'd rather
- 58:06Speaker 1: they call it looser than tighter. But if you're gonna
- 58:08Speaker 1: call it tight, call tight, call it the same way
- 58:10Speaker 1: the whole game. If they're gonna be nitpicky, it's annoying.
- 58:13Speaker 1: But if they're going to be nitpicky the entire way through,
- 58:15Speaker 1: as long as you kind of know what is and
- 58:17Speaker 1: isn't a penalty, fine number two speed, Like, if you're
- 58:21Speaker 1: gonna be nitpicking and throw a million flags, know what
- 58:23Speaker 1: the flag is, call it, move on, don't spend two
- 58:25Speaker 1: minutes discussing it each time. That's what I look for
- 58:27Speaker 1: from the officials. I'll give you one more referee not
- 58:29Speaker 1: before we move on. Here I mentioned Sean hockeyy the
- 58:32Speaker 1: six most flags in the league this year. He against
- 58:36Speaker 1: the home team, so he's throwing fifteen on average, fifteen
- 58:40Speaker 1: quarter flags per game on against the home team, it's
- 58:44Speaker 1: six and a quarter per game. Against the road team,
- 58:46Speaker 1: it's nine per game. So that's a that's a kind
- 58:49Speaker 1: of a noticeable split there that favors.
- 58:51Speaker 3: The home team for Sean Hockey. Something to keep in mind.
- 58:54Speaker 2: I do wonder if all the defensive off sides are there, since.
- 58:58Speaker 3: That's not the rest there is lining up.
- 58:59Speaker 2: I know Derek coaching is so get off the ball,
- 59:03Speaker 2: fire off off the ball, up the field, violence, like
- 59:06Speaker 2: all these different things that they're coaching them on. It's
- 59:09Speaker 2: like Anthony Jennings just like jumped one like he was offside.
- 59:13Speaker 2: Harold Andry was lined up in the neutral zone, which
- 59:15Speaker 2: Calebon Jason's had some penalties like that too. So I
- 59:19Speaker 2: had those ones, the neutral zone ones like, that's on you.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Like that. The line of scrimms is the third you
- 59:24Speaker 2: don't put your hand on the like, so it's on you.
- 59:27Speaker 1: We've talked about this and Trent Brown was big on this,
- 59:30Speaker 1: and we've seen it from other teams that like timing
- 59:34Speaker 1: the snap count as an offensive lineman and getting right
- 59:37Speaker 1: back into that pass set and you know, you get
- 59:39Speaker 1: called for one or two fall starts a game, but
- 59:40Speaker 1: you get that extra step. The rest of the snaps
- 59:44Speaker 1: is the defensive counter to that. Now, Hey, I'm gonna
- 59:46Speaker 1: line up right on the ball. Yeah, and if I
- 59:49Speaker 1: get called for one off side to game, but I
- 59:52Speaker 1: get this extra half step to counter his extra half step,
- 59:56Speaker 1: it's worth the five yards.
- 59:57Speaker 3: I don't know that's what it is. It's just me guessing.
- 59:58Speaker 1: Out loud, but I just know that Bets have been
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: doing that for a while. You got to figure there's
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: a defensive counter coming eventually, right, And I just know
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: that they're coaching them so hard to get off the ball.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I just think that some of that is eagerness
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: to try to get off the ball as quickly as
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: they can. All right, we're going to take a quick break,
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: pay the bills, and we'll come back with three up,

- 1:03:49Speaker 2: monitor it and host the show at the same time,
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: but we do try it. So this is from DC Patriot,
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: who I believe is in here quite frequently. Evan is
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: going full Nerd on this pretty sure he's the only
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: one who knows what he is saying. That is catch
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: twenty two in a nutshell, right, there is an hour
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: of full nerd. And sometimes I probably go a little
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: too heavy on the football jargon, so I apologize, but.
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: I mean I think I followed mostly no you, he said,
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: good luck to you.
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Like, yeah, but Evan, I got a note in my
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: in here, said Evan, going so nerd. It doesn't even
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: sound like words to me. Okay, So I am not
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: that we have all the time in the world to
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: do this, but if you, I am more than happy
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: to explain some of my nerd them like this doesn't
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: have to be I'm not a gatekeeper like I. We
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: welcome everybody. So the emails are on, the calls are on,
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: if you legitimately, I'm not being like, you.
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: Know, a snarky what's the formula for DVOA.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: I can't tell you that it's proprietary sole gate keeping
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: to me. So the Patriots are thirteenth in offense dv
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: A good, they're twenty why they're twenty eighth in defense DVA,
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: which I think tells you a little bit more about
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: where their defense.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: Is at and maybe like points, I didn't want to
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: open this oul door. Oh yeah, not great, chirp the
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: secret formulas?
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: Should we do three up? Three down? All right? Who's
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: your number one up in this game? I think we
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: probably have the same one.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: My number one up in this game was Christian Barmore.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Oh wow, we don't have the same I don't do
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: him in order, like I just do him in order.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: That why why don't you do them in order?
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: It's who's yours?
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: Digs?
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: No, keep going, just give you great, give your take,
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: give your take.
- 1:05:26Speaker 7: Uh.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: Barmore and mil Williams, two of them were just really
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: good in this game. Once they got going, that's when
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: the game changed. And I kind of just talked about
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: it before. Once they started getting the interior pressure, the
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: Panthers were never the same. Is nicey Barmore kind of
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: get to run ring it up a little bit because
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: teams a bit. You talked about how teams are going
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: back and forth on who they're focusing on. I feel
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: like it's been a lot of focus on Barmore deal
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: with what Milton Williams does, and Milton Williams did a lot,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: and so I think in this game maybe it switched
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: a little bit and teams decided, what if we double
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Milton Williams. What can Christian Barmore do? He can do
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: a lot too, So I was glad to see he
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: didn't get any sacks. But you know, for people who
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: follow up pressures and things like that, or just watch
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: the tape like he looked like somebody is like the
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: resistance bands coming off right shooting with the ankle weight
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: till you take those off and deal with double teams
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: NonStop for three games.
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: Suddenly he gets some one on ones light work.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: So I had him with five pressures in this game,
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: Christian Barber who's on my list too, and he just
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: had constant interior push, Like he had one really good
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: rush where he landed to hit on Bryce Young and
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: just dusted the right guard cleanly off the ball, and
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: that was nice to see. But to me, most of
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: his pressure was just denting the pocket. And he was
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: just in Bryce Young's lap consistently in this game and
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: took away multiple completion opportunities with his pressure. There was
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: one in particular, you know, right before Marcus Jones's punt
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: return touchdown where he walks the center back and then
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: the left guard comes over and tries to like help
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: out the center and he actually knocks Christian Barmore over.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: But it led to Bryce Young all this trash being
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: at Bryce Young his feet, and so Bryce Young I
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: had to move off his spot and I ended up
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: missing those.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: We didn't talk that sequence probably isn't talked enough about
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: that change the game because so there's that second hand
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: where they get the pressure third and ten from I
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: think the forty one forty three yard line going in.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: So what I think they were doing is trying to
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: catch the Patriots off guard.
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: All right, if we can get six on a draw
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: right now, we're going to go for it on fourth down.
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: And when you're a pass rusher in that spot third
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: and ten, you're not thinking about my run fits and
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: I got to get keep this light like you're pinning
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: your ears back and going. Milton Williams is still able
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: to get the stop at the line of scrimmage. I
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: don't know that the Panthers are punting there without like
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: even if they get three yards on that run, they
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: might go for it at least try long field goal.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: That's that's a huge run stuff for Milton Williams in
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: that spot that ultimately forces the punt that Marcus Jones
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: takes back to the house.
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: Yeah. So I had them as my number three up here,
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: and combined, Milton Williams and Christian Barmer had seven total
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: pressures in this game. Yeah, that big stuff that you're
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: talking about there by Milton Williams. They they are a
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: consistent week to week problem for opposing the offensive lines
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: to the point where we might need to retire Milton
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: Williams and Christian Barmore from the ups.
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: I don't even retire anybody week monthly.
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: Okay, well, they're gonna be on it every single week
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: because those guys reckon the game. And my number one
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: up and you like talked about all these other guys.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: I can't believe it. Marcus Jones obviously, and Marcus Jones
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: eighty seven yard punt return touchdown sixty one return special person,
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: he was a player of the game. I mean, the
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: game totally flipped. Now. I agree with you that the
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: defense making that stop sort of started to change the
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: tide of the game, But the game flipped on the
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: eighty seven yard punt return touchdown. And I often go
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: back and watch those to try to find out, like
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: who made the block that sprung him on this return,
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: because that, to me is really when special teams can
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: can be interesting. There was no block sprung him because
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: he literally did it himself. He made three guys miss
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: and then ran by everybody else. I haven't seen a
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: whole lot of returns where the returner truly did it
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: by himself. He truly returned that punt return by himself.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: Look, footballs and the Patriots been big on talking about
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: this this year. I think this is something like Rabel's
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: truly preaching it's all eleven guys, nobody, you know, no
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: one play is done by any one player and all that.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: That's as much of one player doing the job for
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: all eleven as you're ever gonna see. And what's fascinating
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: about that play to extend the point we were just making,
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: so they get that third down run stop it's four
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: to ten. I still think the Patriots or maybe Mike
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: Rabel said something after the game about wanting to get
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: a better push up front against the punt. I wonder
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: if they were expecting a fake because they had a
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: lot of their starting defense out there.
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: When's the last time you think Milton Williams helped on
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: punt return?
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: And Kiris Tonga and so these are not How many
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: times do you think those guys have? Well else play
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: special teams a lot, But that's true, but that was yeah, sorry,
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: how many times do you think Milton Williams's practiced how
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: to set block and set up a return in his career,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: not many, if any, right, So credit to those guys
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: for not getting in the way and not committing penalties,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: although Milt Williams kind of gotten the way Charles Woods
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: it was the biggest hit of the game.
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: Although I guess Charles Woods told Williams after the game
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: it wasn't him. Didn't want him to feel beat or something.
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: I don't know what though, did you hear Mill Williams
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: got asked about it after the giving goes who was it?
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: Then somebody in the scrum goles like, oh it Charles Woods,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: he goes, He told me it wasn't him, So I
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: don't know what happened there, But like, credit to those
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: guys staying out of the way, not getting penalized. Kiris
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: Tonga there was one spot I think it was tong
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: around like don't block in the back, don't block in
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: the bag, and he didn't as much of a one
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: one guy doing all.
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: And then the second one too was a really good
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: return and the second one had.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: A little bit more help. Not to take anything away
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: from Marcus Jones, but just to credit those guys, you know,
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: mapou Jack.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: Gibbons's special teams. They built the wall right to allow
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: him to reverse field the other.
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: Thing on the first one.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: To your point of building the wall, I think schooler
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: who is a special teamer, he thinks it's going to
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: be a fair catch. Yeah, everybody thinks it's going to
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: be a fair catch. So I mean that play, let's
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: not forget. He also had Look, I know it was
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: only nineteen yards. Yeah, in a close game, which this
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: obviously wasn't. A nineteen yard punt return can be massive. Yeah,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: and we're just throwing that away as as a footnote
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: in this game.
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: So yeah, he was excellent.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: So Marcus Jones, we both had a bar more and
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: plus Williams in my case, who was did you have
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: Marcus Jones too?
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: Or I did?
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: Okay, who is your next one?
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: So I cause I kind of went like defense off
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: in special teams. This one's a combo. I'll just it's
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: two guys, but I'll do it together because they're related
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: Will Campbell and Ben Brown.
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: Yep, so Will Campbell dog dog. And obviously the play
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: is going around a ton. You guys posted it first
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: snap of the game. Backside of the run.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: It's not a.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: That blocks he just kind of needs to get in
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: the way there. He doesn't need an impact block on
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: that play. Nick Scorton, though, tries to swim move him
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: for whatever reason, that didn't sit well with Will Campbell,
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: and he drives him about fifteen yards and puts him
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: on his ass tone setter dog awesome and he look
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: it's not an amazing front.
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: But he was on his p's and q's.
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: Right, they literally cut the guy that was rushing on him.
- 1:12:18Speaker 9: That was did they?
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: Yeah? D J Johnson. Now that's not to take anything J. Johnson.
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: That's not to take away anything from Will Morgan. Right,
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: it was also tightened. Maybe maybe he should go back
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: to playing tight end, you know. But the point is
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: is that Will Campbell was DJ Johnson.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: It's a shoutout in pass protection, was good in the
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: run game, in this game, and when you face this
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: level of competition, that's.
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: What he wanted to dominant him.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and it was. It was borderline dominant. So borderline
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: I don't know, Yeah, I mean, I.
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: That's not just because of the level of competition. So
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: but and then I want to throw into that too.
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: So because this against Joey Bosa this week, we can
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: we can.
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: Let's give Will Campbell's flowers.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: I also want to recognize Ben Brown, who I think
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: a lot of people have written off in camp comes
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: back in, beats out Cole Strange, wins that starting back
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: up in here guard. He played what six snaps eight
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: snaps of guard in the NFL in the regular season
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: prior to this game, he was great too, and him
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: and Campbell were working some combo blocks and he looked
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: good in past pro. And you know, we'll see ultimately
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: where this goes long term. Chared Wilson's going to be
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: part of their long term plans. If Bradbury starts to struggle,
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: does this maybe open the door more to moving Wilson
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: inside to center? And now you feel where Ben Brown's
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: at his starting guard. When he came from Cincinnati last year,
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: texted our old friend Trags said he and I think
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: he means like personality wise, which by the way, is
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: a major compliment, reminds him a little bit of Ted Carris. Yeah,
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: there's a little Ted Harris in his game too. And
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: you know, if you go back to it, and I
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: don't know how they would have done it because they
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: had Joe Tuney, Shack, Mason, David Andrews, but like Ted
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: Carris was a starting caliber player and maybe there was
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: a way for the Patriots to keep him involved and
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: keep him around like he kept him.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: Definitely should have kept them in twenty twenty one.
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: Well, but where was gonna play?
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: What do you mean they traded Jack Mason? They had
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: right garb.
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: One Okay, so that was that wasn't twenty one, that
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: was twenty two.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Yes, they should have kept Yeah, so I'm with you,
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: but like, does he become their Ted Carris where he's
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: like a super sub, you know, super sub starting caliber
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: and tier offensive linean that can move around and maybe
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: the long term plan is.
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: And it's just one game, let's not get too far
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: ahead of ourselves.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: But like, yeah, k, I think that's exactly what you
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: picture something where it's you know, Will Kit long term here,
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: Will Campbell, Brett Ben Brown, Jared Wilson, Mike on WINNU
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: second round pick in this year's draft, because Morgan Moses
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: has been very good to start his hair and take
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: anything away from Morgan Moses, but he is thirty four.
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: He's not a long term option.
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: We know that.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Everybody knows that, So like really encouraging to see Ben
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Brown have that game. They're a question about when he
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: make the team, would he fit in the new scheme,
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: whereas the coaching staff was gould be with them.
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: You saw it last year.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: He got signed on Thursday, started the first game of
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: a rookie quarterbacks career at center and was he fell
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: off a little bit late in the year, but like
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: really gave them, you know, solid center play for most
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: of that season. Well everything was falling apart around him.
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: This guy stays ready, shows up, plays on Sundays. You
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: need guys like that on their football team. A big
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: shout out to Ben Brown for the way he played
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: ensive line talk. He also he had the toughest match
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: of anybody. Derek What did Derek Brown do in this game?
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: Yeah? He had a little bit of Derek Brown in
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: this game. So I think the biggest thing with the
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: line And I'm gonna nerd out here for a second
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: as well. So they're there and you should ask Andrews
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: about this. So they're maybe I did. They're sliding the line, yeah,
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: to three man slides to one side of the field,
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: to one side of the formation, and then their man
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: to man on the backside. It's just like traditional pass
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: protection like it's nothing, there's five on four. Yeah, they
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: got exotic about it. But by what they're doing when
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: they to the non slide side to the man side,
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: is it They're they're chipping with the tight end. So
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: if Campbell is on the non side side or Moses
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: on the non side side, they're getting chip help from
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: the tight ends, and then they're sliding on the other
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: side of the line, which is giving the tackle inside
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: help from the guard. Right, So what big picture of
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: what they're doing is that this is how you help
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: tackles that might not be world beaters in pass protection.
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: Is you slide one way, you chip, you do different things,
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: you move the pocket. Of course, on these play action
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: passes they only had in this game. I only they
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: only dropped back to past twenty one times total, so
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: it's obviously a low number to begin with. But they
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: only had like nine or ten true pass sets in
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: this entire game. So all that is doing is just
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: limiting the exposure that Campbell and Moses have, right, the
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: true drop back pass. Now, you can't live in that
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: world forever, Like they're gonna be games where you're gonna
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: have to ramp that up and they're gonna have to
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: hold up, but they're doing a really good job skimally
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: of helping the offensive line, which I think is a
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: big part of why the line and pass protection has
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: been so good. I also think it's a part of
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: why if you look at win rate, they're down still
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: in the bottom ten of the league. I think they're
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: like twenty third now in the league and win rate,
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: but they're up near the top of the league in
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: terms of like time to pressure and blown block rate
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: and things like that because they're doing these things to
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: help the line. So it hasn't been perfect with the
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: run blocking, but the pass protection for this group has
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: really come a long long way. It's a big reason
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: why the pass game has been so good. My last
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: up with Diggs obviously great game six for one oh one.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: I think the most encouraging thing for this game with Diggs,
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: and I keep picking on this guy and I apologize,
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: but I'm going to do it anyways. Yeah, Mike Jackson,
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: the corner for the Carolina Panthers, not a very good
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: player in my opinion, not on Stefan Diggs's level, and
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: it did not look like he was on Stefan Diggs's
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: level on Sunday. The fact that the pay Mariots have
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: a version of digs that he can still feast on
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: guys that are not on his level is really really
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: important just for the whole hierarchy of the passing game,
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: because now you go into games and like the Bills
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: are going to prepare for the Patriots offense this week,
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: you can't just allow digs to go against your second
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: or third corner like Christian Benford on third down is
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: going to have to cover Stefan Dins And now the
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: domino effect that that causes for Kaishaan Budi, for Matt Collins,
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: for Kyle Williams, for Tomorrow Douglas, it just puts those
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: guys in the right pecking order. And so if Diggs
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: can do that every single week where he's that coverage
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: dictating game planned receiver, that's all you're looking for. Like
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: the production will hopefully come with that too, but even
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: if it doesn't, just the fact that he's drawing number
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: one receiver coverage is kind of enough. And the Panthers
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: didn't shadow him with J. C. Horn in this game,
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: and they hurt for it like they paid for it,
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: And hopefully he can continue to do that. It was
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: also great to see I talked about the numbers yesterday,
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: thirteen air yards per target in this game, six point
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: eight six point nine in the first three games, targeting
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: him much farther down the field like that. To see
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: him get to the second and third level of the
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: defense effectively is really good progress and the really positive
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: for the Patriots as well. So it'sdefon Diggs last one.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I had Digs on there as well. That's my
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: holest Okay downs, who you got penalties?
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: Number one? We already talked about that.
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I had Carlton Davis number one, who had two
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: of the seven penalties. Yeah. I don't think Carlon Davis
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: has been bad, but he's going to get a lot
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: of targets this season because nobody's going to want to
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: throw at Christian Gonzales. So the ball is going to
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: come at him a lot. And if he's holding and
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: if he's you know, tugging on jerseys and things like that,
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: that he's going to get a lot of flags thrown
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: his way because the ball is going to be come
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: in that direction, which puts a spotlight on that matchup.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: And so I thought in this game he struggled a
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: little bit with Ted McMillan, certainly on those inbreaking routes,
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: and he's gonna have to gear up every single week
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: for seeing a ton of targets, like he's going to
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: get the ball throw in his direction a lot and
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: he's gonna have to be ready for it. So I
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: don't I don't think he's been. It's not been a
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: bust of a signing or anything like that, right, but
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: this game wasn't his best game. Who's number two?
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: Number two for me was Christian Ellis. Yeah, bench second
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: week in a row. It's obviously not great. Defense has
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: been getting better and he's neither jacket. We probably should
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: put Jack Gimmons on the ups. He was really good
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: in this game. They have some holes that week' sideline
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: back we could have put in the ups, But you know,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: two benchings in a row, both times the defense gets
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: better after he comes out of the game. You wonder
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: if his starting jobs in jeopardy, especially Jilnie devis eligible
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: to come back off ir this week. I don't think
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: that stylistically that's a fit, but they're just going to
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: have another linebacker. Yeah, another another rough game for him,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: So I only had.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: One other one, and I do want to talk about
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: one other guy, but I feel like I keep picking
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: on a rookie and I feel bad about that. We
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: talked about it. With the defense stuff, just setting the
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: edge against the run in general, I just didn't think
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: was very good in this game. I didn't want to
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: single out either Chason White or Landry because I think
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: all three of them at times were culprits of blowing
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: the edge. So whether it's schematic, whether it's you know,
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: just playing blocks a little bit differently, like, whatever they
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: need to do to be a little bit more consistent
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: on the edge of the defense, They're going to have
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: to figure it out because this is a copycat league.
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: And when the teams start to see on film that
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: they can't set the edge, all they're gonna do is
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: run off tackle and they're just going to keep hitting
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: that button and keep hitting that button until you stop it.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: So that was my second one. You had one more.
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: You said, yeah, Pop Douglas.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: Now, look he sets the great block on the Hunter
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: Henry touchdown, but he's fallen behind Kyt Williams. Now in
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: terms of usage. At least he did in this game.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: The offense looked really good with him not out there.
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: I just he he might find himself on the outside
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: looking in of a you know, significant role in this
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: offense as things stand right now.
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: So the one that I the rookie Trayvon Henderson another
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: hold in pass protection, the nine yard checkdown that he caught,
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: I thought there was a lot more yards available, Like
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: there's it's one on one with the linebacker and there's
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: nobody else on that side of the field. So if
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: he makes the linebacker miss there, he's going to be
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: running for a while. That's the type of play less
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: so than the pass protection stuff, which I think will
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: come in time. Like I would like to see him
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: make a defender missing some space there on that pass,
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: Like that's why he's here. Like that, those types of plays,
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: getting him into space with the ball in his hands
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: as a receiver is why he was drafted at the
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: top of the second round. I just I've just been
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: a little disappointed. Like it's not like I'm ready to
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: write the kid off or call him a bust or
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: anything like, but it's been a slow start for Travon Henderson.
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: All Right, that is three out, three down, We're gonna
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: get to your calls here, We're gonna ask you to
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: be a little bit quick. We're going to try to
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: be quicker with the calls because we do want I
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: had to fit previews in and we haven't been doing
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: a good job of budgeting all right time in that respect.
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: So we're gonna take a calls.
- 1:23:06Speaker 4: Though.
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: Patty is an agu on what's up? Patty?
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: What's up? Guys?
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: Will make it quick, So thanks Patty.
- 1:23:13Speaker 10: The one no problem. The one thing that I don't
- 1:23:15Speaker 10: want to happen after this game is win or lose.
- 1:23:18Speaker 10: You know, I don't want to see like, if we
- 1:23:20Speaker 10: win this game, fans go nuts and have the hype
- 1:23:23Speaker 10: train go off the rails and say we're going to
- 1:23:25Speaker 10: the super Bowl. We're winning the super Bowl, and lose
- 1:23:29Speaker 10: like see, like Paul likes to say, the blid police
- 1:23:31Speaker 10: come out and say, see, that's who we really are.
- 1:23:33Speaker 10: I just want to get you guys' thoughts on that,
- 1:23:35Speaker 10: and I'll take it off there.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I hear what you're saying, Patty. You know I
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: wouldn't worry too much about the external.
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: Do you remember in twenty twenty one when they got
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: rolling a little bit and we started seeing the mac
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: Jones Tom Brady Super Bowl Collision chorus graphics and all that.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: I'd like to see him win the game and then
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: whatever happens with that happens with that. But yeah, I mean,
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: people are gonna get a little ridiculous if they do
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: win this game. I'd say, you know, take a deep breath.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: But also it's part of being a fan. It's part
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: of being a fan. You win a game like that,
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: you know they'll be over five hundred for the first
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: outside of being one and oh last year, for the
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: first time since when like probably twenty twenty one, right
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: back to back wins for the first time in a
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: long time.
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: Like, you're getting ahead of ourself. Yeah, they're gonna win
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: this game, but I'm not gonna fall fans for being
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: excited if they win the game on Sunday night. Now, internally,
- 1:24:27Speaker 2: I'm sure Mike Rabel will do everything in his power
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: to keep them grounded. But that's internal, Like I don't
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: we don't have to do like we're not playing, we're
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: not coaching.
- 1:24:36Speaker 3: I'll just say this.
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: I've been known to take a victory lap for two
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: on takes. The biggest victory lap I probably ever took
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: was after the Mac Jones three pass wind game in Buffalo,
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: and what has it been like between the Patriots and
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: Bills since? So just you know, keep that in mind
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: if you're gonna make any big picture claims.
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: All right, Christian is in La. What's up? Christian?
- 1:24:58Speaker 7: Hey you guys?
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: Hey, how are we doing?
- 1:25:00Speaker 11: Happy Wednesday?
- 1:25:01Speaker 12: Today?
- 1:25:02Speaker 11: Good today? So really quickly to me, I really feel
- 1:25:05Speaker 11: like the key to this game, at least with having
- 1:25:07Speaker 11: a chance in the game, really is our sideline, the
- 1:25:09Speaker 11: sideline defense. I feel really confident about our run defense
- 1:25:13Speaker 11: up the middle. Yeah, we've given us some stuff, but
- 1:25:15Speaker 11: I'm pretty secure with not losing the game by by
- 1:25:19Speaker 11: a team beating us in the like in the trenches.
- 1:25:22Speaker 11: But sideline sideline sort of worries me. And I think
- 1:25:24Speaker 11: if we can get sidelined, the sideline defense cover these guys.
- 1:25:27Speaker 11: I really think we can neutralize a lot of what
- 1:25:29Speaker 11: James Cook does to make his big yards and then
- 1:25:32Speaker 11: you know, against Blaine or someone's gonna have to cover
- 1:25:34Speaker 11: him out the backfield. So to me, when the game
- 1:25:37Speaker 11: really key on how we play and treat James James Cook.
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: Yeah, Christian, thanks for the call. It's it's a really
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: good point. I think preparing, you know, setting up for
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: the Bills this week. And we're going to get into
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: this deeper in a second. But they are under center
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: a lot more now. They run the ball traditionally a
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: lot more now than what you probably, uh, you know,
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: if you think of Josh Allen, you think of him
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: running a lot. But they turned the ball, they you know,
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: snapped the ball, turn it around and handed to James
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: Cook a lot more now than they did maybe two
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: or three years ago. And he is you could argue that,
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: you know, he's kind of outside of Allen, like the
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: engine of their offense right now. Him, Shakir and Allan
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: are kind of like their holy trinity, like their threesome
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: right there, of guys that are really driving this offense
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: to number one in the league in pretty much every category.
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: I think they're second in points technically because the Lions
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: scored like sixty one one week. So yeah, so the Bears. Yeah,
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: so that's but they are they're thirty fit points a week,
- 1:26:39Speaker 2: of thirty points a game every week, like they are hitting.
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: They're not You're probably not going to hold the Buffalo
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: Bills under thirty points, let me put it to you
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: that way. And James Cook is a huge part of it.
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: The passing game stuff is obviously there for them if
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: they want it, Like the Bills can do whatever they want.
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: They have that kind of offense and that kind of talent.
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: But I would say the run game with what James
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: Cook has really been a difference maker because it's made
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: their offense more consistent, Like it's less volatile because it's
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: not all predicated on Josh Allen just like throwing haymakers
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: all the time now because they have like scripted offense
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: that they can go to where they're just running plays
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: in structure traditionally conventionally offensively, and that's just leveled out
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: their offense so much so that it's not just like
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: sixty yard bomb pick, sixty yard bomb pick right like,
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: and now there's a consistency to it. Let's take Randy
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: in Providence. What's up Randy?
- 1:27:34Speaker 13: He of guys, how's it going with that?
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: Good?
- 1:27:38Speaker 13: So real quick? Two questions. One, in the pre draft
- 1:27:42Speaker 13: process part of the whole Will Campbell scouting, you saw
- 1:27:45Speaker 13: the Land and Jackson matchup, which was kind of his kryptonite.
- 1:27:49Speaker 13: And I'm wondering how you guys think that he's grown
- 1:27:52Speaker 13: since that matchup to not necessarily specifically avoid Jackson, who
- 1:27:58Speaker 13: I don't believe has been active yet, but to what
- 1:28:00Speaker 13: any chips to Jackson might give his teammates on like
- 1:28:04Speaker 13: how he was able to consistently get Campbell that week
- 1:28:07Speaker 13: last year. And then secondarily just quick five names. There
- 1:28:11Speaker 13: are five names that made eighty or better grade for
- 1:28:15Speaker 13: PFF this week for the Patriots. On Wayne You, Giggs,
- 1:28:19Speaker 13: bar More, Pettis s the lay you guys hadn't mentioned
- 1:28:24Speaker 13: Pettis at all. I wonder what you think about that.
- 1:28:27Speaker 13: On Wayne You was the highest graded right guard in
- 1:28:29Speaker 13: the week in the year in the league this week too,
- 1:28:32Speaker 13: So thanks thanks.
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: For the caller, Randy. Yeah, del Pettis played in garbage
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: time in the fourth quarter. Yeah, it was a little
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: bit of a small sample size there in terms of
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: his play, But on when it has been interesting because
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: I had him for a hurry in this game, and look,
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: he's a run blocking right guard in their last in
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: the league in rush EPA. So I have I understand
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: that it's a team game and it's not just one
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: guy ever, But at the same time, you know, if
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: you're I think there's an another gear there for big
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: Mike as a run blocker to really be an impact
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: run blocker and have that right side be an impact
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: right side for them that I just don't know if
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: they've not fully hit yet. And and so I don't
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: think on one who I know, he gets a lot
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: of flak. He is a big dude, and some people
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: think he's out of shape and all that stuff. I
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: don't think he's been bad, but when you're paying a
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: guard eighteen million dollars like you're expecting him to be
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: a little more an impact player. Yeah, all right, Jeff
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: is in Maine. What's up, Jeff?
- 1:29:32Speaker 5: Hey, guys, good, I'll make it quick. I got a
- 1:29:36Speaker 5: comment in a question. The comment is Island off to
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: a rough start for one and three? Uh oh no,
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: Joe Burrow was like quarterback, so things have gone downhill.
- 1:29:50Speaker 5: We had a bounce back week this week, though, so
- 1:29:52Speaker 5: we're you know, we'll we'll get back there.
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: Love it and my question.
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: I feel pretty good about our matchup with the Bills receivers.
- 1:30:01Speaker 5: I think that you know, Davis bigger physical corner, matches
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: up really well with Kean Coleman, really shifty, smooth guy
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: against all his matches up well with Khalil Shakir and
- 1:30:16Speaker 5: then their tight ends are a little bit worrying with
- 1:30:19Speaker 5: how Tommy Tremble did against this last week. I was
- 1:30:22Speaker 5: just wondering what you guys think about how we match
- 1:30:24Speaker 5: up against the Bills passing game. And I'll take it
- 1:30:26Speaker 5: off there.
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: Thanks guys, Yeah, Jeff, thanks for the call. I it's
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: a it's a good question. And I was on with
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: the Bills guys on coover one Greg and Aaron last night.
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: And when you hear the opponent's perspective on your team's
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: kind of interesting because they're always looking at it like
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: where are the holes, Like where are the weaknesses that
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: the Bills can attack? And you know, rightfully, they pointed
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: out the Patriots linebackers and safeties against the Bills tight
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: ends and running backs like that was where we went
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: and where the conversation went. And I think that's a
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: it's a fair concern and I want to kind of
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: tackle here in a second more in depth, but that,
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: to me is part of what probably is going to
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: decide this game is whether or not the Patriots can
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: cover Kincaid and Knox. And I'm I was gonna say
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: Dalvin James Cook out of the backfield like that, that's
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: gonna be a big part of this game. But I
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: also when I watch the Bills offense, I know how
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: you feel about this, Alex. When I watch their passing game,
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: I think Khalil Shakira is the guy that starts to
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: drink in that passing game. Like to me, he's the
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: one that is almost like Edelman like where like he's
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: the chain mover. He's fantastic with the ball in his hands,
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: breaks tackles at an insane rate for receivers, led the
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: league in broken tackles last year, is near the top
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: of the league, and broken tackles this year. Given the
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: Patriots issues that they've had tackling through the first month
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: of the season two, I just look at Shakir and say,
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: that's the guy that you absolutely like. If they beat
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: you throwing the ball. Dawstin Knox and Kean Coleman and
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: like these other guys in their passing game, you kind
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: of have to just tip the cap to those types
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: of things. I'm not saying that don't go in with
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: the plan, but I think Khalios Shakira is the guy
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: that really is Josh Allen's binky, Like that's the enngine
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: of this offense.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: And he's killed Patriots, has been very good and that wow,
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: I am I blaying on his name Isaiah not Isaiah Rodgers,
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: Isaiah Zi McKenzie roll a little bit. That's probably who
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: I'm putting Gonzales on in this game.
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: And if you want to talk about that, it's tough
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: because Shakir is a catch and run guy and he's
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: not a guy that Gonzalez is gonna end up covering
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: a lot down the field with downfield routes. They throw
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: a ton of passes to him short behind the line
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: of scrimmage, passes like screens and you know, motions and
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: like all that different kind of thing. Uh, you know,
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: all those like schemed plays that they run offensively in
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: the passing game or pretty much all featuring Khalil shit here.
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: So it's a tough matchup for a guy like Gonzalez,
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: who is fantastic. But Gonzalez really takes out guys that
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: are running routes down the field like that's his specialty.
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: I don't also wouldn't necessarily say that tackling is Christian
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: Gonzalez his best trade either, So I don't know what
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: exactly because like in theory, I agree, and I'm probably
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: gonna write that it should be Gonzalez because Shakir to
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: me is top billing like he is. He is like
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: the Marquee matchup in this game and the Bills passing game.
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: But I do wonder how they handle him because he
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: is a little bit different last year. Not that last
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: year's coaching staff is the best barometer of how to
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: game plan an offense, but they had Jonathan Jones on Shaquir,
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: which makes sense, like speed guy, great open field tackler.
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: I don't know if Marcus Jones is necessarily that kind
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: of player, but maybe a little bit more like that
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: kind of player. So it's an interesting It's not like
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: it's not a Ted McMillan where you can just line
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: up Christian Gonzales over him and have them go to
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: to tem They.
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: Just don't have a ton of good receivers though, and
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: somebody's got to cover somebody.
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: Yeah, Ryan is in Tennessee. What's up, Brian?
- 1:34:13Speaker 5: Hey, what's up?
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: Guys? Huge fans of the show, and your guys's takes
- 1:34:17Speaker 4: an analysis and what you do, so thank you keeping
- 1:34:20Speaker 4: past fans close to all the action and a couple
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: of things. Yeah, absolutely, And I know you want to
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: be quick, so I'll be as quick as I can here.
- 1:34:29Speaker 4: But just like big picture, I can't remember the last
- 1:34:32Speaker 4: time I was just excited about the Patriots really, and
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: when the schedule came out, I kind of was just
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: hoping for two and two entering the Buffalo game no
- 1:34:41Speaker 4: matter how it came, and it was very interesting, but
- 1:34:45Speaker 4: super excited for the matchup this week and nice to
- 1:34:48Speaker 4: not just be incredibly nervous before we play Buffalo and
- 1:34:53Speaker 4: really just feeling like we have a chance in every
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: game that we have on the schedule that we have
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: a chance to be in it with this staff, our offense, defense,
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: and everything we've got going.
- 1:35:03Speaker 8: For us this year.
- 1:35:04Speaker 4: So that's all. And wanted to stay hi and get
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: thank you guys for what you do. And I also
- 1:35:08Speaker 4: agree Marcus Jones on Khalil Shakir. I think he's our
- 1:35:11Speaker 4: best matchup match at speed and a pretty good tackler,
- 1:35:14Speaker 4: underrated tackler. So that's all I got, guys, Thank you again, appreciated,
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: no problem.
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: Thanks for the caller, I appreciate it. Uh yeah, it
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: is nice And like I think I might have said
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: this off the air, so I'll say it on the air.
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: The fact that we can like really get you know,
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: nerd out and talk about like the x's and o's,
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: and but also just like get really in depth on
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: the games because people actually care about how these games unfold.
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: Again is, uh, is what this show is all about.
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: So it's really cool that we have that opportunity. I
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: just feel like the last couple of years everything is
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: just so doom and gloom, and you know, it's just, uh,
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: what went wrong or you know, big picture draft, you know,
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: like all these other different things, Like that's not what
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: this show was built for. This show is built do
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: what we're doing here today. So it's cool to be
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: back in that category, at least for now. We'll see
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: if it lasts, but at least for this week, we're
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: back in that in that world. Jordan is in Georgia.
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: What's up, Jordan?
- 1:36:13Speaker 12: Hey guys, this is my first time calling Glad. I
- 1:36:16Speaker 12: finally got to I watch you all the time.
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you.
- 1:36:21Speaker 12: Yeah. My question more of a statement REALA. I love
- 1:36:25Speaker 12: the Patriots. I got a lot of friends, and I
- 1:36:28Speaker 12: still a lot of people in the media hyping this
- 1:36:30Speaker 12: stuff after these last couple wins. I don't want to
- 1:36:33Speaker 12: be a Debbie downer, but like I've been watching football
- 1:36:36Speaker 12: for ten years and I don't know if I've seen
- 1:36:38Speaker 12: a more miserable fifty three man roster than the Panthers.
- 1:36:41Speaker 12: Like receivers I've never heard of. Bryceon Tremaine was starting
- 1:36:46Speaker 12: for them. Hunter Renfro who they actually cut I heard,
- 1:36:49Speaker 12: and then brought back after a Cocher injury. Besides, Ted
- 1:36:52Speaker 12: didn't really have anyone. I think they said they had
- 1:36:55Speaker 12: two pressures on Drake May the whole day. And I'm
- 1:36:58Speaker 12: really I love the direction we're going in. I feel
- 1:37:00Speaker 12: like we're building momentum, but I just I want to
- 1:37:03Speaker 12: see it against some better teams. I just want to
- 1:37:05Speaker 12: know if I'm being too pessimistic.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: But that's it, No, no, not at all. I think
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: that you're spot on. But just the one thing I
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: would say, just on the positive is that the Panthers
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: are not a good team and the Patriots made them
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: look like.
- 1:37:20Speaker 3: Beat by thirty.
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: Right, it would be one thing that that was like
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: a ten point game and it was close, and you
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: can't not play them. You don't get to be like, well,
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: we're so above them, like we don't you know, So
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: I get what he wanted to look like against the
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: bad team.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: If we're if we're talking playoffs or trying to take
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: this team's truly seriously, he's right, He's one hundred percent right.
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: With that being said, when you play bad teams, you
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: make them look bad. You win by twenty nine, win
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: by thirty, that's what it's supposed to look like, right,
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: And so they were able to do that. I you
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: can't say the same for that. This team for the
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: past like two and a half years, they have not
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: been able to beat bad teams the way they beat
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: down Carolina on Sunday. So that's a that's positive. What
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: was Mike Rabel's first checkpoint? Can you take advantage of
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: bad football? They're starting to take advantage of bad football,
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: Like the win against Miami was kind of taking advantage
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: of bad football. And then this was also with taking
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: it football. And you know, just quickly just look at
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: the schedule, like this schedule bad. There's a lot of
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: bad football at Buffalo this week. But one thing, but yeah,
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: I mean you have that was it New Orleans, Tennessee.
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: Cleveland Trio there right after Buffalo to wrap up the month,
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: of October. That's a lot of bad football, and that's
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: a lot of opportunities there to win some of these
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: games and and just try to get ahead of it
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: and maybe even be dare I say, like in the hunt,
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: you know, come December and January, if you clean up
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: and let's face it, like I don't know what's gonna
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: happen in Atlanta, Like Atlanta is is sort of teetering.
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: They played better this past week, But this Panthers team
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: beat Atlanta thirty to nothing two weeks ago, right like that,
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: that Panthers team that everybody's saying is terrible blew out
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: the Falcons the week before. So if Falcons are on
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: your schedule, the Joe Burrow of Cincinnati Bengals that look
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: lifeless on Monday night are on your schedule. Both those
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: teams Miami and the Jets that also looked like they
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: were a bunch of bad football going on in that game.
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: You have three more games against those guys. So I
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: just rattle off six to seven games, right that are
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: all very winnable for the Patriots, and they you know,
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: you start talking about eight, nine, ten wins, now you
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: start talking about wild card and being a six or
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: seven seed and all that good stuff. We have twenty
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: minutes to talk about the bill, so we did a
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: little bit better today with the timing here. This game,
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: to me is a really fascinating game in terms of
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: matchups and all that kind of stuff. Let's start with
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: Josh Allen because I just I know that this is
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: one of our favorite topics to discuss on and off
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: the air With Josh Allen. I have two takes on
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: Josh Allen. The first take is watching their film and
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: watching their offense over the last two years evolve. They
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: have basically allowed Josh Allen to be Clark Kent like
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: ninety five percent of the time, and then every once
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: in a while, like last week he had that big
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: thirty yard run where he pulls out the Superman cap.
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: But he doesn't have to do that as much anymore,
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: and he's gotten so much better in structure, running conventional
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: offense that it's just made them a juggernaut offensively. And
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: I give him credit for that. I gave obviously the
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: Buffalo coaches, and Joe Brady is really good at what
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: he does too, But to me, that's been the biggest
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: difference with Josh Allen, that the Patriots faced early on
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: in his career. In the Josh Allen now is Josh
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: Allen now can play quarterback like he can sit in
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: the pocket and just tear you up just playing conventional quarterback.
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: I mentioned the run game stuff earlier on with James Cook.
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: When you can buy those two things that they are
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: number one in the league right now in pass and
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: rush EPA. They're number one in both categories. They are
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: the best offense in football. And I think a lot
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: of it stems from the fact that Josh Allen doesn't
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: play as much chiro ball anymore as what he did
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: early on in his career. So where are you at
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: with Josh Allen? Because I know that this is all
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: we always go back and forth on Josh Allen. I
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: wanted you're on the record now here.
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I said for years that there were
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: elements of the quarterback position that he couldn't handle, and
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: you yelled at me for being a hater, and you
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: just admitted that he struggled at playing quarterback until recently.
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: I didn't say that now that you just did. I
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: think that it's I give him a lot of credit
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: for developing patients.
- 1:41:30Speaker 3: You literally just said, he's really playing quarterback. I think
- 1:41:33Speaker 3: something like that.
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: Developing patients is something that I think is a really
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: underrated thing about quarterback play. When you're Josh Allen and
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: everybody is trying to keep you in the pocket, and
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: everybody's trying to keep the top on the defense, and
- 1:41:47Speaker 2: they're playing a lot of soft zone and covered two
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: and two high shell, Like the easiest thing to do
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: is to go play hero and start running around and
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: chucking the ball all over the place. And to his credit,
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: what his growth has been, along with the mechanic stuff
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: and the accuracy, is that he is now willing to
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: take the profits, like he's willing to just sit there
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: and throw the ball underneath the defense and move the
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: ball that way. He is middle of the road, like
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: nineteenth in air yards per per pass attempt, but they're
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: number one inefficiency. So the fact that he's not throwing
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: the ball down in the field it done hasn't hurt
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: them at all. And that's a testament to I think
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: him developing some patients, which I think is tough for
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: young quarterbacks.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I look, it is impressive. He's cut out
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: the turnovers and that's what was killing him. And I
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: know that the math will tell you that the turnovers
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: aren't important, because I didn't say that. The nerds saw
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: their favorite guy turning the ball over and said, let's
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: cook up a formula where we downplay that. But no,
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: the fact he's not turning the ball over now and
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: he can play more instructure. I mean, that was the
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: book on him, was just keep him in structure, make
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: him be patient. He could do it against Patriots because
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: he had a hair across his ass for Bill Belichick
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: in this organization, and he would only do it against
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: Patriots and nobody else.
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: We saw that.
- 1:42:55Speaker 3: Now he's doing it against everybody.
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: So it hurts you to say say nice things about him.
- 1:43:01Speaker 3: Heard you never said that he's bad. I just said
- 1:43:04Speaker 3: he was overrated, and I still think it's true.
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: Like I got asked this morning on the radio, I
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: was on a Toucher and Hardy and touch of do
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: you think James Cook's one of the most underrated players
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: in the league. I think he is, or one of
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: the more underrated running backs in league. I think he
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: is because we have to give anything that happens with
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: the Bill's credit. Anything that happens with the Bills. We
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: have to credit to Josh Allen, nobody else cook and
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: you you were very confimentari secure today, but we have
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: to give and look, ironically, now there's not as much
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: talent around him as there used to be. I thought
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: Diggs was underrated for years, and I still think he
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: was at the time.
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: But like you are still you're still like on this island,
- 1:43:39Speaker 2: like you're still you're not.
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: What Josh Allen is doing now is very impressive. You
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: guys have been talking about him like he was doing
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: this since twenty twenty, and he hasn't been this hass been.
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: He's been a top five quarterback in the league since
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: twenty twenty.
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: The way he's playing right now. You just said he's
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: changed a lot in the last year and change.
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: I said that he's playing more conventional quarter but that
- 1:44:01Speaker 2: doesn't mean that he wasn't damn good doing the other stuff.
- 1:44:03Speaker 3: But what he was doing before, right, And I never
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: said he was bad before, but these were just and
- 1:44:10Speaker 3: this is my point. I never said he was bad.
- 1:44:11Speaker 3: I just pointed out there were flaws in his games.
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: Overrated, I think.
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: Because I pointed out there were flaws in his game
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: and got you, Josh Allen, you're just a hater brob
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: the book.
- 1:44:21Speaker 3: No, I'm sorry, he's perfect, all hail Saint Allen or whatever.
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: But like you know, and now he's cleaned up a lot.
- 1:44:27Speaker 3: And here's the thing.
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: So you're now sure changing him because I want to Yes,
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: you are, because I want to say, he's cleaned up
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: a lot of things in his game that I thought
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: were going to be tough to clean up. But according
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: to you and all the other fan boys, he was
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: perfect forever. So we can't give him credit for he does.
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: How can he get better?
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: So no, that's not what I say.
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: I just look, I you got to be on your
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: p's and q's defending him. He doesn't give you a
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: ton of room for error defensively. The hardest thing with him,
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: the thing that always kills me and the play that
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: the play that I think really scares me with him
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: more than anything else, when he starts rolling out of
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: the pocket and he just has an unbelievable knack for
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: you get the two on one and he's got a
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: receiver in the flat and there's one defender and the
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: defender has to either come down and crashing on Allen
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: or take the receiver in the flat. He's really good
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: at waiting until the last second to make that decision
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: and always making the right decision. It's uncanny the way
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: he always makes the right decision in that situation. That's
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: the play that makes me pull my hair out, is
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: you think you haven't pinted the sideline and either the
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: defender pulls up the last second because they don't want
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: to flag, or they think he's gonna throw and then boom,
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: he scoots up the sideline for fifteen yards, or that
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: defender crashes down, he flips the ball to whoever, and
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: now that guy's got a ton of room to run.
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: That's the play to me that makes him the most dangerous.
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny because I think everybody goes there with
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: him because that is the play that is a backbreaker.
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: Like it's third and eight and you have them and
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: you have the initial kind of routes covered initially, and
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: you have the play stopped initially, and then he just
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: goes off script and pulls something out of his butt.
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: But you know, like I was saying, he doesn't have
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: to do that as much anymore because their conventional offense
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: is just working, like they just they just have enough
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: open guys that he can just make throws on time
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: from the pocket. It's cool to see that development. I
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: think it gives you an awful lot of hope if
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: you're a Patriots fan about Drake May, because you already
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: see Drake May doing that. I would say even earlier
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: on in his career compared to Josh Allen, like Drake
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: May and your two is already where Josh Allen started
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: to get maybe in like nineteen twenty twenty type range,
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: which is two three years into Allen's career. The other
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: thing I wanted to say about Josh Allen just from
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: like a game plan perspective on how to you know,
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: stop this freaking guy. Teams have not really brought the
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: fight to Buffalo very often, and a big part of
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: what I'm seeing on film with the Bills is that
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: they get all this soft zone coverage because everybody's terrified
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: of the big play and him getting out of the pocket.
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: So it's mush rush. Four guys drop off into coverage,
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: keep everything in front of you. They right now are
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: lead in the league and yards after the catch per reception,
- 1:47:13Speaker 2: they're averaging seven yards per catch after the reception. They
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: have twelve explosive plays on passes that traveled less than
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: ten yards in the air. So they're just killing teams
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: on catch and run stuff, screens Khalil Shakira brick and
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: six tackles last week and going up the sideline and
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: all of this is because everybody backs off, like everybody,
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: you know, they're giving them eight yards of cushion. And
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: so all Alan does is he just flips the screen
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: out to Khalil Shakir with a couple of blockers, and
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: the corners are way off the line of scrimmage and
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: Shaki's just running, you know, with daylight all the time.
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: And I understand that this strategy a lot kind of
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: you know, on steroids. But like week one, Yeah, for
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: the Patriots defense, you might lose some rounds like this,
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: I end up with you on the mat a couple
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: of times. But with the corners that the Patriots have,
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: with the pass rushers that the Patriots have up front,
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: has anybody actually tried to like get in the face
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: of these receivers and try to press these guys because
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: they're not a great group of wide receivers. And the
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: one thing that gives you pause on that is they
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: do motion. So much that if you try to play
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: man to man and now you're chasing Shakir left to
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: right because he's constantly going in motion. That's what Joe
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: Brady's gonna do if they play man is He's just
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: going to motion Shakir all over the place. But I
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: just wonder if you if you try to bring the
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: fight to them a little bit and you go man
- 1:48:40Speaker 2: to the mass, say this for a long time. You
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: play press, you rush four or five guys to keep
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: Allen in the pocket, and let's see, like, let's see
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: if these receivers for Buffalo can separate.
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: I've said this for a while. There's more games than
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: people want to admit. That the Bill's success is just
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: the other team playing scared. And I always go back
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: to and I've told her story on here before, but
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: like when when Brady came back here in twenty one
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: and we were talking to Matthew Judne about it.
- 1:49:06Speaker 3: Matthew Judon had been on.
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: Some of those Ravens teams right that gave the Patriots trouble,
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: and he talked to some guys that were on the
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: teams that really gave him trouble back in the day,
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: and he wouldn't say Brady's name or something during the
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: press conference. I mean, there was something weird about it,
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: and we just kind of kept asking him and he's like, guys, look,
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: he's a good football player. And I'm paraphrasing if he's like,
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: he's a good football player. But we're in the NFL
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: two and at a certain point, you got to do
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: what you do. And we saw how many teams did
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: we see come in here, whether it was the Steelers,
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: whether it was the Colts, whether it was the Chargers
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: and just completely try to reinvent themselves because they were
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: so in their heads about what this Patriots offense was.
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: And now you come out of your comfort zone and
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: you're hurting yourself more than you think. And I think
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: some teams do that against the Bills now, and frankly,
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: the Bills are not good enough to deserve that respect,
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: not dis iteration of their offense.
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: You just said they have no receivers. Don't laugh, I say,
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: this is your point of receivers. I said that they're
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: I don't know if this group because like.
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: Who's who's better receiver in Patriots and Bills close exactly
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: like Shakira, I think might be a little bit better.
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: And after last week, I don't know, but if dig
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: starts like getting healthy and.
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: I hear your point, and this is my point, so finish.
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: So like I said, there's all these teams that would
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: come in and just mess their pants because oh it's
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: the Patriots. We got to do all this stuff that
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: we don't know how to do because we got to
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: do something different, and the Patriots just roll over. The
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: Ravens were the one team. And this is why the
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: Ravens gave the Patriots trouble for all these years. I
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: think is part of it because Ray Lewis and Terrell
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: Suggs and those guys had this mentality that who cares.
- 1:50:45Speaker 3: Right where in the league. They're in the league, let's
- 1:50:47Speaker 3: play ball. And I do think against the Bills and
- 1:50:51Speaker 3: the Chiefs, like against any great team, I see that this.
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: The Eagles are another team that this happens against you.
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: I see teams twist themselves into a pretzel trying to
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: get against the Eagles, and it's like, just play them, man, Yeah,
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: just play them. If you're a decent team and maybe
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: they win, maybe they are better than you. You at
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: a certain point, you gotta do what you do and
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: you got to play to your strength. So to your point,
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: they got a good pass rush, they got these big
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: physical corners, get up on them present. But Josh Allen
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: might do that, all right, So then sit ten yards
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: off and let him pick you apart, right right, That's
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: what I'm saying, That's what I saw. Don't let this
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: couple weeks force you to reinvent yourself.
- 1:51:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, that's exactly what I've seen the last
- 1:51:28Speaker 2: couple of weeks out of these defenses is that they're
- 1:51:30Speaker 2: terrified of the deep ball. They're terrified of Josh Allen
- 1:51:33Speaker 2: off script. And if you play man to man coverage,
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: then you're you're opening yourself up for him running around
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: and playing off.
- 1:51:40Speaker 3: Having a spy in this game would be helped, sure,
- 1:51:42Speaker 3: But and if you.
- 1:51:43Speaker 2: Spy him and you for you know, with the spy
- 1:51:45Speaker 2: and forced him into a decision, right, I don't let
- 1:51:48Speaker 2: him just extend the play. And I think the biggest
- 1:51:51Speaker 2: thing to me about it all you know, we were
- 1:51:53Speaker 2: talking about it just now, with Josh Allen and his growth,
- 1:51:56Speaker 2: like at this point, I would rather turn this into
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: a messy playground football game. And I know that sounds
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: crazy with Josh Allen because that's been his superpower. But
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: I think that you're gonna win more rounds than doing
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: it that way then backing off and playing scared, because
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: when you back off and play scared, they are just
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: driving the ball down the field on teams, they're taking
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: the profits underneath zone defenses. They're running the football at
- 1:52:25Speaker 2: an extremely high rate. So I just wonder if the Patriots,
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: now with these two corners, are just built. So let's
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: just man them up and let's see, like, let's make
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: Keon Coleman get open. Let's make you know, Dalton Kinkaid
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: beat us. Let's make this happen for the Bills instead
- 1:52:43Speaker 2: of just we're gonna give am eight yard checkdowns every
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: all game long, because as you always talk about with
- 1:52:49Speaker 2: the run game, if you have a j eight yards
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: per pass attempt, they're gonna be in the end zone
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: a lot. And it just I get why teams are afraid,
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: but the Patriots might be one of the few teams
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: that have the personnel to not be afraid.
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: And it's also I mean, do you think there's a
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: chance the Bills overlooked the Patriots a little bit? But
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: they went up there last year and got up to
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: a fourteen nothing lead, like ultimately didn't hold it.
- 1:53:10Speaker 2: Yeah, but that was one of the best games. Although
- 1:53:13Speaker 2: like they they kind of they were in more of
- 1:53:16Speaker 2: a dogfight against New Orleans and they wanted to be
- 1:53:18Speaker 2: in And so I do think that the Bills kind
- 1:53:21Speaker 2: of had some humble pie last week where the Saints
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: were not really in the game, but it was thirty
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: one to nineteen.
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: There are also an element of Dolphins played them close.
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: And I get that's a divisional game on a short week,
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: but the Dolphins played him close at home.
- 1:53:34Speaker 3: How do the Bills have three home games in a row.
- 1:53:36Speaker 3: Of course they do.
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: Dolphins played them close at home. Saints played them close
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: at home. Maybe there's something to that. Maybe there's something
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: to the Bills letting these teams hang around and stay
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: in games, and maybe they're not the juggernaut. Everybody thinks
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: last thing, a last thing there. I mean, sorry, who's
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: better the Saints of the Panthers. Yeah, I hear you,
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: there's a juggernaut. Let that that Saints team.
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: I love the little digs.
- 1:54:02Speaker 3: I'm just I'm just here to keep everybody honest.
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: If we're just gonna hand the Bills to the Lombardi
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: Trophy in September, like people try to do.
- 1:54:11Speaker 3: Can we talk about the remember when tweeted that they.
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: Got their revenge and like we wanted the season? Ah,
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: full circle moment.
- 1:54:19Speaker 3: It's ridiculous.
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: We have one minute to talk about the offense. I
- 1:54:22Speaker 2: want to really quickly talk about You just want to
- 1:54:25Speaker 2: talk about Josh Allen True the Bill's defense. Yeah, talking
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: to to some of the Bills fans this week, they're
- 1:54:34Speaker 2: way more concerned about their defense than I thought they
- 1:54:37Speaker 2: should be. Like, I guess this is fandom and and
- 1:54:39Speaker 2: that's the whole thing. Uh. They they've been playing down
- 1:54:42Speaker 2: a couple of starters. No At Oliver, No Matt Milano,
- 1:54:44Speaker 2: Max Harriston, their first round pick hasn't been playing. So
- 1:54:47Speaker 2: that that's a big part of it. And we'll see
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: on the practice reports this week if Milano and Oliver
- 1:54:52Speaker 2: are going to play in this game on Sunday. But
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: they're getting run on. They're they're twenty eighth in the
- 1:54:57Speaker 2: league and against the run they're running core have given them.
- 1:55:01Speaker 2: Even Rattler had some scrambles last week. So running quarterbacks
- 1:55:05Speaker 2: have given them problem. Conventional run has given them problems.
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: They're still really good pass defense, and they have always been,
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: and that's always been a tough one, but the Patriots
- 1:55:13Speaker 2: have found ways, especially in that twenty twenty one, really
- 1:55:16Speaker 2: both matchups in twenty twenty one with Mac Jones, to
- 1:55:19Speaker 2: run the football on this Bill's defense. The Bills play
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: a four to three over front. They play the same
- 1:55:24Speaker 2: front and the same base defense that I've seen them
- 1:55:26Speaker 2: play since Sean McDermott took the job eight years ago.
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: They play the same style. The Patriots love to run
- 1:55:33Speaker 2: it at the weak side of the defense because the
- 1:55:35Speaker 2: overfront is tilted to the strong side. The numbers are
- 1:55:38Speaker 2: at the strong side of the defense. So if you
- 1:55:40Speaker 2: can isolate the weak side linebacker, it's one on one
- 1:55:43Speaker 2: back side if you can get blockers, whether that's with
- 1:55:45Speaker 2: the full back or pollers or whatever the case may be.
- 1:55:48Speaker 2: So the Patriot's got to be able to run the
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: ball on this game. I'm going to come on your
- 1:55:52Speaker 2: side of the street. You know this is a run
- 1:55:53Speaker 2: the ball, Shorten the game, limit possessions for Josh Allen, like,
- 1:55:57Speaker 2: that's the formula for the Patriots this week and game.
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: They're built to do it well and that usually puts
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: coaching more on the spotlight. Say it's a good point
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: on the run. I just want to bring up one
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: more point. I'll ask you this, who's the coaching advantage
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: in this game? Shouldn't need to think about that? Yeah,
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: I think probably the Patriots probably think it's probably. I
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: don't think it's probably. I think the Patriots have the
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: coaching advantage in this game. So that's something that you know,
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: if you can shorten a game that looms large.
- 1:56:19Speaker 2: All right, we got to wrap it up. Patriots Unfiltered
- 1:56:22Speaker 2: is going to be on here in four minutes at noon,
- 1:56:24Speaker 2: so we're still going to talk way more about the
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: Buffalo Bills in this matchup on Sunday. Alex and I
- 1:56:28Speaker 2: will be back next week recap the Bills. It's the
- 1:56:31Speaker 2: Saints right after the Bills game.
- 1:56:33Speaker 3: I know it's Saints Titans Browns.
- 1:56:35Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll get into that matchup as well. We'll see
- 1:56:38Speaker 2: you guys then. Thanks for watching, right, Hey, this is Deuce.
