• 1:00
  Speaker 1: You ready, mm-hmm?
• 1:03
Speaker 1: The self-driving revolution turned out to involve more sleep deprivation than residents of one San Francisco neighborhood imagined.
• 1:12
Speaker 1: This is from Automotive News.
• 1:14
Speaker 1: Okay, people who live near a parking lot that Waymo recently began using as the home base for a fleet of robo-taxis say they're being constantly woken up by the car's incessant honking.
• 1:26
Speaker 1: When the cars slink back to their spots each night, they tend to get in each other's way and respond how many human drivers would, but here the only humans around to hear the car's warnings are in their beds surrounding this jammed lot in san francisco.
• 1:46
Speaker 1: There's no one for me to go down there and have a conversation with, because they're robo-taxi.
• 1:53
Speaker 1: Randall white 57 told the la times that's the most frustrating thing you're just yelling into the void.
• 1:59
Speaker 1: White and other neighbors had thought empty cars would be more peaceful parkers than the baseball fans that used to congregate before and after San Francisco Giants games.
• 2:10
Speaker 1: At first I actually found it really funny.
• 2:14
Speaker 1: These cars are honking at each other, he said.
• 2:16
Speaker 1: Well, I don't find it funny anymore, damn it.
• 2:19
Speaker 1: Waymo told NBC Bay Area in an August 10th statement that the company was aware that in some scenarios our vehicles may briefly honk while navigating our parking lots.
• 2:30
Speaker 1: A spokesman said the company had diagnosed the problem and was working to fix it.
• 2:35
Speaker 1: In the meantime, software engineer Sophia Tung, whose bedroom overlooks the lot.
• 2:39
Speaker 1: Sophia Tung, whose bedroom overlooks the lot, has set up a round-the-clock live stream with music she calls LOFI Waymo Hip Hop Radio, self-driving taxi depot shenanigans to relax slash study to.
• 2:56
Speaker 1: Her YouTube channel also has clips showing some of the driverless gridlock her camera has captured.
• 3:03
Speaker 1: In only a few days, tung told the Verge that she'd enjoy watching the cars maneuver themselves, if only they'd cut out the honking.
• 3:11
Speaker 1: It's expletive 4 am she says at the end of one video sounding exhausted.
• 3:21
Speaker 1: Help, it's like white noise.
• 3:22
Speaker 3: I can only imagine.
• 3:24
Speaker 3: Must see Call the police about disturbing the peace reports and see who they write tickets for.
• 3:29
Speaker 2: This fall on your favorite channel.
• 3:30
Speaker 2: Yep, no, randy, he's here.
• 3:33
Speaker 2: We got Randy oh.
• 3:35
Speaker 3: I was waiting for you to finish that story.
• 3:37
Speaker 2: We were all enthralled, we were enthralled.
• 3:40
Speaker 1: It was a good story.
• 3:40
Speaker 1: Well, theoretically, we were Theoretically.
• 3:41
Speaker 1: It was a good story.
• 3:41
Speaker 1: Well, theoretically, we were Theoretically Speaking of theoretically joining us now from Paint House, a customized shop that does absolutely fantastic paint.
• 3:51
Speaker 1: Randy Borcharding, the proprietor.
• 3:55
  Speaker 4: Randy.
• 3:56
  Speaker 4: Hi, Hi, fellas.
• 3:56
Speaker 4: Sorry about the drama there.
• 3:57
Speaker 4: I couldn't get the dang link to work.
• 3:59
  Speaker 1: Uh-oh, you couldn't.
• 4:00
  Speaker 1: That's Mar's fault, that's Mar's fault.
• 4:04
Speaker 4: Well, we all know that.
• 4:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, and if we don't, somebody will tell you yeah, exactly.
• 4:10
  Speaker 4: That's right.
• 4:11
  Speaker 3: How you been.
• 4:12
  Speaker 4: I'm good, I'm good.
• 4:14
  Speaker 1: How's.
• 4:14
Speaker 4: Jen, it's a bit hot here.
• 4:17
Speaker 1: Yeah, I can only imagine.
• 4:18
Speaker 1: Well, the shop's air-conditioned, but I would imagine it's probably running around the clock trying to keep up.
• 4:23
  Speaker 4: It's what, what's that word?
• 4:25
Speaker 2: Around the clock, around the clock, I thought air conditioning.
• 4:30
  Speaker 4: Air.
• 4:30
Speaker 4: What Air conditioning In a shop?
• 4:33
  Speaker 4: They do that.
• 4:34
Speaker 1: Yeah, and I see insulation on the walls in that shop, so I would imagine it holds the heat in.
• 4:43
Speaker 3: Much better, much better with insulation, uh-huh.
• 4:45
Speaker 1: Okay, so is that the sunshine.
• 4:48
Speaker 4: We are not air-conditioned.
• 4:50
  Speaker 1: You're not.
• 4:51
  Speaker 4: Sadly no no.
• 4:53
Speaker 1: Well, I think that next paycheck needs to go to the AC man.
• 4:58
Speaker 4: Are you retracting your application?
• 5:02
Speaker 1: Yes, I am my application to work there.
• 5:07
  Speaker 4: Absolutely Well.
• 5:08
Speaker 4: Dang it it, you were the last one.
• 5:09
Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess so.
• 5:10
Speaker 4: Uh, no, I, I just assumed that it was air conditioned no sir, no sir, how many square feet you got there, randy uh, this building's 4 000 and so it wouldn't take that much to air condition it.
• 5:22
Speaker 4: Other than our environment is so dirty and dusty and we keep the doors open a lot to keep the dust out.
• 5:29
Speaker 4: I don't know how to capture the air and keep it clean-ish.
• 5:36
Speaker 1: There's money that can be thrown at it.
• 5:37
Speaker 1: That can solve that problem.
• 5:39
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, money right.
• 5:42
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the thing I'm missing.
• 5:45
  Speaker 4: That's just.
• 5:46
Speaker 4: That's the only thing.
• 5:46
Speaker 4: That's it all right.
• 5:48
Speaker 4: So I would love to.
• 5:49
Speaker 4: I would love to do it, you're right all right.
• 5:50
Speaker 1: Well, I figured you would, and I'm just trying to help you along, just like jen is um well, good luck with that so I see something underneath, uh, some plastic over there, which usually means that there's paint flying somewhere.
• 6:06
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a 57 Chevy Bel Air convertible.
• 6:08
Speaker 4: It's got the 2.4 barrel original high performance engine in it.
• 6:13
  Speaker 4: It's a neat piece.
• 6:14
Speaker 4: It came out of Idaho, an original with 2.4 barrels on it, 283, 2.4s.
• 6:20
  Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
• 6:22
Speaker 1: I did not know that they offered that.
• 6:27
Speaker 4: Yes, sir, stand by if I can figure out how to flip the screen.
• 6:28
Speaker 3: the only place I've ever seen them is in the convertible 57.
• 6:31
Speaker 3: I don't know if that was the only offering, but that's the only place I've ever seen them.
• 6:35
Speaker 2: My gosh is that the original color?
• 6:39
  Speaker 4: it is.
• 6:39
Speaker 4: It's kind of, uh, orangey red, I forget what they call it.
• 6:43
Speaker 4: It had a damage to the quarter panel, so we're taking care of that.
• 6:47
Speaker 4: But other than that it's a beautiful original piece.
• 6:51
Speaker 4: I mean it's been painted and restored but it's all original in its form factor.
• 6:56
  Speaker 4: It's a neat one.
• 6:58
Speaker 4: A friend of ours in Idaho owns it.
• 7:01
Speaker 1: And I would imagine that the paint job is just a little bit better than when it came from the factory.
• 7:06
  Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, slightly.
• 7:07
Speaker 1: Yeah, slightly a lot.
• 7:10
Speaker 4: So is that all you can do?
• 7:11
Speaker 4: I'll get the plastic off here.
• 7:11
Speaker 4: Is that all you can do?
• 7:12
Speaker 4: I'll show it to you.
• 7:14
Speaker 1: You don't have to do that.
• 7:15
Speaker 1: Yeah, you don't have to do that.
• 7:16
Speaker 2: Just the repair on the right rear quarter.
• 7:18
Speaker 2: That's all that's going on, or are you going to do other work to to it?
• 7:21
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh look at that paint.
• 7:23
  Speaker 1: Yeah, hello.
• 7:27
  Speaker 4: It's a good one.
• 7:28
  Speaker 2: Yeah it's stunning.
• 7:29
Speaker 2: So just the repair on the back that's all you're doing At the moment.
• 7:37
Speaker 4: We'll polish the paint up and make it look presentable, but it's now going to live in Houston instead of Idaho.
• 7:42
Speaker 4: Oh wow, so our customer here bought it from another customer in idaho and I brought it back on a recent trip.
• 7:52
Speaker 1: And here it is, um you know I love those kind of cars.
• 7:57
Speaker 1: Look at that, look at the air cleaner that's on it.
• 7:59
  Speaker 1: Yeah, that's beautiful.
• 8:01
Speaker 1: Now the problem here lies that I don't get to see that car.
• 8:06
Speaker 1: Is he going to show it like at Autorama or something?
• 8:09
Speaker 4: It may get shown, but he's a guy that actually drives his stuff and this one was on display in the home of the folks in Idaho.
• 8:18
Speaker 4: They had a special room built where they could display some cars where they could display some cars, and now this local fellow, Noel Urban, will show it once or twice but he'll get in and drive it.
• 8:32
Speaker 2: Well, he's got a room for his cars.
• 8:33
Speaker 2: I remember putting transmissions in the bathtub.
• 8:37
Speaker 4: The folks in Idaho did.
• 8:38
Speaker 1: Yeah, we got that.
• 8:44
Speaker 4: I think he's in the process of.
• 8:45
  Speaker 4: He's got a few cars and we've built a few.
• 8:47
Speaker 4: For example, this blue Firebird here is one of his.
• 8:48
Speaker 4: And he's in the process of what do they call these garage mahal's, where you buy a piece of a building and you store your car's stuff in it, build a man cave, that kind of stuff.
• 9:00
Speaker 3: Car condo thing yeah.
• 9:01
  Speaker 3: Yeah, quite popular.
• 9:03
Speaker 1: We've got a friend of ours that has one of those called the Hemi Hideout.
• 9:06
Speaker 1: Have you ever been out to the Hemi Hideout?
• 9:10
Speaker 4: I've not been there.
• 9:11
Speaker 4: Ironically, my daughter when she got married, we were going to have the reception there and then she decided she didn't want a big wedding and we never went.
• 9:20
Speaker 4: So my wife's been there and seen it and loves it.
• 9:22
  Speaker 4: I have not.
• 9:23
Speaker 1: Okay, well there, a open house that we're going to be broadcasting from is at October, I think it's.
• 9:33
Speaker 3: October the 9th, that's what comes to my mind.
• 9:36
Speaker 1: Let me double check that.
• 9:36
Speaker 1: But, Randy, I'll come and pick you up.
• 9:40
  Speaker 1: How's that?
• 9:42
Speaker 4: I would love that.
• 9:42
Speaker 4: That would be awesome.
• 9:43
Speaker 4: Pick you up in that traffic helicopter.
• 9:46
Speaker 1: No, well, that ain't going to happen, but I can tell you that I'll drive out there, there I'll pick you up, because I want you to go, and I want you to go see, I want you to meet john first and then, and then, uh, and experience the hemi hideout.
• 10:00
Speaker 3: yeah, you you'll freak out.
• 10:01
Speaker 3: There's so much stuff there and it's november the 9th, november the 9th, okay november night I that's right after sema I may not be back oh no, you will, that's gonna be back after sema, that's a week after sema.
• 10:13
Speaker 4: You're gonna drive to sema and pick me up?
• 10:15
Speaker 1: no, I'm not, but uh, I'll ride on the plane with you.
• 10:19
Speaker 1: If I have to come and get you, okay, what?
• 10:21
Speaker 4: is that well that this is a 68 cutlass convertible?
• 10:25
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, beautiful, we're on the final stages of sanding.
• 10:29
Speaker 4: I've already got that.
• 10:31
Speaker 4: You can't tell now, but it's taped, taped up.
• 10:33
Speaker 4: But the bottom is bed liner and cleaned up and nice, and it's done essentially on the bottom.
• 10:39
Speaker 1: Now we're getting the top side ready bed liner on the underneath already, but it looks like it's primered down there that was masking paper yes, oh, I see, I have it.
• 10:49
Speaker 4: I have it covered, so it'll just stay clean, gotcha.
• 10:52
Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know if you can see the see it better now you kind of see through it a little bit yeah very nice.
• 10:59
Speaker 4: Some of the anyway, the bottom's done, wheel wells are done.
• 11:02
Speaker 4: Now we get the top side ready.
• 11:04
Speaker 4: It's going to be a light blue kind of a pearlescent light blue color with a white top.
• 11:11
  Speaker 1: Beautiful.
• 11:11
Speaker 4: And the interior A blue as well.
• 11:15
Speaker 4: Almost an original style interior, Nothing very custom.
• 11:17
Speaker 4: Got a Morrison chassis, LS3, that kind of stuff Very nice.
• 11:22
Speaker 4: But they want the look and the feel of the car to remain as original as possible.
• 11:27
Speaker 4: Yeah, to remain as original as possible.
• 11:28
Speaker 4: Yeah, so it'll drive drive better and and will be more fun, but you'll still think you're looking into 68 cutlass when you, when you walk up absolutely, yeah, love that so it's a neat, by the way.
• 11:39
Speaker 1: Uh didn't combination I think the last time we talked to you were you looking for an interior guy yeah, sadly our, our fella we use in tennessee has passed away from cancer recently oh, that's too bad and uh, yeah, young dude 48 years old got two daughters.
• 11:57
  Speaker 4: I mean.
• 11:57
  Speaker 4: It's a tragedy, really tough.
• 11:59
Speaker 4: However, the reality of it is that firebird you just saw the blue one was in his shop and was almost finished and he just didn't get it to the finish line before he moved on.
• 12:11
Speaker 4: So we're going to yeah, we're looking for a shop, going to try one up here in College Station.
• 12:18
Speaker 4: Got another fellow in San Marcos we're using, but I'd love to find someone closer.
• 12:23
Speaker 1: Yes, I can't imagine that you can't find one here in Houston.
• 12:28
Speaker 2: Well, you can find them.
• 12:29
Speaker 1: It's just not to his standards.
• 12:30
Speaker 1: Well, I understand that, but that's what I'm saying.
• 12:34
Speaker 4: If someone's out there or knows of someone who can do higher-end work, I'd love to know about it.
• 12:39
Speaker 4: Please reach out to me.
• 12:40
Speaker 1: Okay, or reach out to us and we'll pass it on to you, yeah yeah, however, that happens.
• 12:50
  Speaker 4: Info at InWheelTimecom.
• 12:51
Speaker 4: What is your website?
• 12:52
Speaker 4: It's PaintHouseTexascom or PaintHouseTXcom.
• 12:54
  Speaker 1: Gotcha Okay.
• 12:56
Speaker 4: We couldn't get Paint House because some company in Thailand owns it.
• 12:59
Speaker 4: Really yeah, they wanted a lot of money for it, so I added the word Texas.
• 13:04
Speaker 4: Perfect Makes more sense.
• 13:06
  Speaker 1: Yeah, it does.
• 13:06
Speaker 1: Now we know where you are.
• 13:08
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 13:10
  Speaker 2: All right.
• 13:11
Speaker 1: So you showed us these cars that you've got in the shop.
• 13:14
Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to talk a brief minute about your custom paint availability.
• 13:22
Speaker 1: And you actually do custom paint that you don't necessarily apply yourself.
• 13:30
Speaker 1: People come to you and say, randy, I've got this blah blah blah car and I want a custom color on it.
• 13:37
  Speaker 1: I want it.
• 13:38
Speaker 1: I want it red, but I want, I want a paint house red.
• 13:43
Speaker 4: Jeez, we're in the lab and when you look at uh, it's like a mad scientist's lab.
• 13:49
Speaker 4: These little speed shapes.
• 13:50
Speaker 4: I've had these made kind of the old Ferrari GTB style Put our logo in it.
• 13:56
Speaker 4: But this is an example of a red like you're talking about.
• 13:59
Speaker 4: It's got that candy look but it's not a candy.
• 14:02
Speaker 4: It doesn't have all the headaches that a candy paint would bring with it.
• 14:05
Speaker 4: Right, and yeah, people all over the country and quite honestly, the world have have asked about our colors and buy them.
• 14:13
Speaker 4: I just can't ship them out of the country.
• 14:16
  Speaker 4: Paint can't fly.
• 14:17
  Speaker 4: That's the rule.
• 14:18
Speaker 1: Gotcha well, although it can ride on a boat to australia and it has a few times interesting, um, and I would imagine that when you do a custom color, could you put paint codes on a piece of paper and mail it to them.
• 14:38
  Speaker 4: Well, I don't, I don't give away the formula.
• 14:41
  Speaker 2: I wouldn't do that.
• 14:41
Speaker 2: It's like Coca-Cola and that recipe right.
• 14:43
Speaker 2: Yeah, kentucky fried chicken.
• 14:47
Speaker 4: There's a level of trust involved here that I'm going to be available if they need more and if I should ever give up on this or god forbid go on to where my upholstery buddy went um, I've instructed people around me to email everybody with their paint formula, so they have it that was nice of you, nice of you, yeah uh, I know what.
• 15:09
Speaker 4: Yeah, I know what it's like to fix a car and not have a paint coat.
• 15:12
  Speaker 4: That's a nightmare.
• 15:14
Speaker 1: Yeah, trying to match a custom color just by looking at it.
• 15:17
Speaker 1: Yes, sir, I've been down that road myself and it's not pretty and it's next to impossible to do.
• 15:28
Speaker 1: People may say, oh, we can make it match.
• 15:31
Speaker 1: No, it won't ever really match unless you paint the whole car all over again.
• 15:38
Speaker 4: Well, in many cases that's true, and we've all seen those cars in parking lots and driving down the highway where half of it's one color and half of it's another color.
• 15:47
Speaker 1: Well, I made the mistake years ago in my 77 Corvette to get a custom paint job on it, and I wanted a faded paint job.
• 15:56
Speaker 1: That should tell you all you need to know right there.
• 16:00
Speaker 1: So the whole car.
• 16:02
Speaker 4: Black guys like you.
• 16:03
Speaker 1: Yeah, the whole car was painted silver and then I left the center of the car, right down the hood and the top of the back of the car silver.
• 16:13
Speaker 1: But then we faded from blue.
• 16:16
Speaker 1: From that era where it was silver faded from light blue all the way to a dark blue and then at the very bottom, bottom of it, was black.
• 16:26
Speaker 1: It looked great but it sure didn't do too well once I crunched a front fender.
• 16:32
Speaker 2: And you know how people name their cars.
• 16:34
Speaker 2: His was named Ugly.
• 16:38
Speaker 1: Actually it did win an award for best paint, but whatever that was before I wrecked it, yeah, whoever had to fix that was cussing you, I promise you.
• 16:47
Speaker 1: Oh, there's no doubt about it.
• 16:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm sure Stevie Wonder is not a good judge of paint color.
• 16:51
Speaker 1: That's right Well hey, there's no doubt about it.
• 16:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm sure Stevie Wonder is not a good judge of paint color.
• 16:53
  Speaker 1: That's right.
• 16:53
Speaker 1: Well, hey, it's great to talk to you, my friend.
• 16:56
  Speaker 4: Sorry.
• 16:56
  Speaker 4: Yeah, indeed, guys.
• 16:57
Speaker 4: Thanks and sorry for the drama there on the link.
• 16:59
Speaker 2: No drama, nah, no problem, you're good.
• 17:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, when are we going to see you again?
• 17:03
Speaker 1: November, for sure, because we're buying you a?
• 17:07
Speaker 4: Yeah, I've got a super-duper Uber coming to get me, or something.
• 17:10
Speaker 1: Yeah, apparently so, and it's going to be a couple of days.
• 17:13
Speaker 1: You'll be in the back of it from Las Vegas to Brookshire, texas.
• 17:18
  Speaker 4: All right, cool.
• 17:18
Speaker 4: All right, we'll do it.
• 17:21
Speaker 1: We'll be counting on it, Randy.
• 17:22
Speaker 1: Great See you, man.
• 17:23
  Speaker 1: Thanks, Randy.
• 17:25
Speaker 1: Randy Borchardt and Paint House is the name of the company.
• 17:28
Speaker 1: In Real Time Car Talk Show is available 24-7 through the iHeartRadio app.

• 20:58
Speaker 3: Well, go ahead, yeah, cool.
• 20:58
Speaker 3: August the 11th this is when Chevrolet actually introduced the Camaro.
• 21:03
Speaker 3: Now, this was Chevrolet's answer to the Ford Mustang, which actually starts the Pony Wars.
• 21:09
Speaker 3: It was a sporty, compact car, got several different performance operate options, such as the rs, the ss and the z28.
• 21:17
Speaker 3: There was a total of 699 138 000 first generation chevrolet camaros built between 1966 and 1969.
• 21:29
Speaker 3: It's a very popular car, even to today.
• 21:31
Speaker 3: Now, on August the 12th this is when Honda's first vehicle went on sale.
• 21:37
Speaker 3: It was actually a T360 mini truck that they moved out of the motorcycle market over into the automotive world.
• 21:43
Speaker 2: That's pretty cool looking.
• 21:44
Speaker 2: That's ugly as hell All right.
• 21:47
Speaker 3: So this vehicle had a 30-horsepower, 356cc engine, much like their motorcycles that they were building.
• 21:54
Speaker 1: No wonder those people are angry over there.
• 21:57
Speaker 3: Top speed is 62 miles per hour.
• 21:59
Speaker 3: It had a mid-engine layout, but this is Honda's first step into the car industry and eventually become one of the largest automakers in the world.
• 22:07
Speaker 3: Now, on August the 13th, we get back into the real world.
• 22:11
Speaker 3: Pontiac GTO Judge is revealed, a special edition of the GTO.
• 22:15
Speaker 3: It was actually named after the catchphrase from the TV show.
• 22:19
Speaker 1: Here Comes the Judge Exactly I was surprised to read that.
• 22:23
Speaker 3: Now this was actually.
• 22:25
Speaker 3: It was originally conceived as a budget muscle car to get back into the market, help produce some more sales.
• 22:31
Speaker 3: But it came with special Judge decals, a rear spoiler, special carousel rib paint.
• 22:37
Speaker 3: It had a 400 cubic inch engine, 366 horsepower and several different options that made it very popular for that time, for the muscle car years.
• 22:46
Speaker 3: Then, on August the 16th this is when, in 1927, the last Model T is built.
• 22:55
Speaker 3: Ford introduced this is the last one that came off.
• 22:59
Speaker 3: It was known as the 10 Lizzy.
• 23:00
Speaker 3: It had been in production since 1908.
• 23:02
Speaker 3: It was the first car to be mass produced on assembly line, which actually is what led to the reduced cost and increased production speed of the automobile industry.
• 23:13
Speaker 3: There were over 15 million units were built of this car.
• 23:19
Speaker 3: August the 19th, 1995, this really surprised me.
• 23:22
Speaker 3: It was the first official Woodward Dream Cruise.
• 23:26
Speaker 3: Now the Dream Cruise.

Speaker 3: It's an annual automotive event third Saturday of August on Woodward Avenue in Detroit.
• 23:32
Speaker 3: For years and years the Detroit people came out of the automotive cars they would cruise Woodward.
• 23:38
Speaker 3: But this was the first time it was an organized event in 1995, but it was actually to be a fundraiser for a soccer field and from that it's grown to where it now draws 1.5 million visitors.
• 23:50
Speaker 3: It's got 40,000 classic cars, muscle cars, hot rods from the 1950s and 60s.
• 23:55
Speaker 3: 16 miles down through the Detroit suburbs is where this cruise runs and it's got to be an event that would be awesome to see.
• 24:03
Speaker 2: And Woodward Avenue was the first paved road in the United States.
• 24:06
  Speaker 2: That's right.
• 24:07
Speaker 3: And I actually was in a drag race on Woodward Avenue.
• 24:09
Speaker 3: I'll be darned, I was a passenger in a BMW min on woodward.
• 24:11
Speaker 3: I'll be darned, I was a passenger in a bmw mini car, mini club car and the uh first police motorcycle uh department was in detroit with harley davidson's.
• 24:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, they're the first ones that have motorcycles all right, uh.
• 24:26
Speaker 1: General motors has been sued by the state of texas, which accused the automaker of installing technology on more than 14 million vehicles to collect data about drivers, which it then sold to insurers and other companies without driver's consent.
• 24:42
Speaker 1: Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, said Tuesday's lawsuit arose from a probe announced in June into whether several automakers collected and sold mass amounts of data without driver's knowledge.
• 24:53
Speaker 1: Paxton said GM's data were used to compile driving scores assessing whether more than 1.8 million Texas drivers had bad habits, such as speeding, braking too fast, steering too sharply into turns, not using seatbelts and driving late at night.
• 25:10
Speaker 1: Insurers could then use the data when deciding whether to raise premiums, cancel policies or deny coverage.
• 25:17
Speaker 1: Paxton said the technology was allegedly installed on most GM vehicles starting with the 2015 model year.
• 25:25
Speaker 1: Paxton and GM said GM's practice was for dealers to submit unwitting consumers who had just completed the stressful buying and leasing process into believing that enrolling in its OnStar diagnostics products, which collected the data, was mandatory.
• 25:42
Speaker 1: Companies are using invasive technology to violate the rights of our citizens in unthinkable ways, Paxton said in his statement.
• 25:50
Speaker 1: Our investigation revealed that General Motors has engaged in egregious business practices that violated Texans' privacy and broke the law.
• 26:00
Speaker 1: We will hold them accountable.
• 26:03
Speaker 3: Big Brother is listening.
• 26:04

• 26:12
Speaker 1: Oh God Zing there you go.
• 26:16
Speaker 2: Thanks for the help.
• 26:17
Speaker 1: We appreciate it, and the owner of two Tempe Arizona General Motors dealerships and a former GM of the stores have agreed to pay a combined $2.6 million to settle state and federal accusations of bait-and-switch advertising, price discrimination against Latinos and improperly charging for additions such as etching.
• 26:39
  Speaker 1: That's awful.
• 26:39
  Speaker 1: It is awful.
• 26:40
Speaker 1: The group at Depola, which is one of the guys there, the GM agreed to collectively pay $2.35 million in refunds to customers and a $250,000 civil penalty to the state of Arizona.
• 26:55
Speaker 1: Watch out, you dealers, don't be doing nothing funky there.
• 26:58
Speaker 2: That team was big back in the 90s.
• 27:00
Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, I remember very well.
