- 0:05There are many versions of the crybaby. Some are historical, others are romantic
- 0:10and some are tragic. I come to speak of a more sinister version and
- 0:14of my experience with this dark being I am from the State of Chiapas,
- 0:20Ciudad Hidalgo. My city is bordering Guatemala. What separates us is the Suchiate
- 0:25River. One cannot cross rowing to go to Tecunumán, but it is more
- 0:30common for those there to use it to cross here. I have no idea
- 0:35how common the encounters with this crybaby are, but at least none of my
- 0:39neighbors have seen it if they' ve heard it, but apparently, I
- 0:43' ve been the only unfortunate one to run into her. Well, because
- 0:48of my work, I must spend every night by the quarantine bridge that is
- 0:53on the road that leads to the city of Tapachula. Usually, I ride
- 0:58a motorcycle, but when I' m arrested, I move in a taxi.
- 1:03I don' t know what kind of fame my city has, but
- 1:07the reality is that it is here. It' s a little dangerous,
- 1:08but it' s in certain areas, not everywhere. I am aware of
- 1:14the distrust of the police forces, but at least as far as I am
- 1:18concerned by the police. It has never stopped me, not without having looked
- 1:22for it clearly to those who if they stop, from time to time it
- 1:26is to the trailers, especially in the evenings, because on more than one
- 1:30occasion accidents have already occurred because some trailer driver fell asleep while driving or because
- 1:37it came in an inconvenient state due to certain illegal substances to get to my
- 1:42house, I must pass the Church of the Nazarene and turn in the central
- 1:46park. I live a few blocks behind the market. That night I had
- 1:52gone out a little earlier, so before I got home, I decided to
- 1:55go to the Oxo to buy me some cigarettes, some chips and a soda,
- 2:00and then I went to sit there near the thing, that giant white
- 2:05woman who stores the water in the middle of the central park. I was
- 2:08quiet there for a while. About a half hour or so soon I began
- 2:14to hear mermaids approaching. Then they passed some National Guard vans and some army
- 2:21vehicles. That was to be alarmed, for although it is now more common
- 2:27to see the National Guard at that time they were not seen frequently immediately the
- 2:34dogs began barking after listening to the sirens. Normal dogs always do that,
- 2:38but anyway, it made me uncomfortable alive about five minutes on a motorcycle,
- 2:45so the first thing I thought about was leaving. But then I started to
- 2:47think that if the National Guard had seen me sitting down and then they saw
- 2:52me leaving, maybe they might think I' m hiding from them. So
- 2:55I better decide to stay there another time, at least until the sirens were
- 3:00heard far enough and the dogs stopped making their scandal. At the time there
- 3:07wasn' t as much lighting as now, so the atmosphere there was a
- 3:12little bit dark you know and with the background noise of dogs barking, all
- 3:15that seemed like something really terrible was going to happen. It' s been
- 3:23a few minutes. The area remained in complete silence. Even the wind didn
- 3:25' t blow. The dogs also stopped barking abruptly. It was as if
- 3:30time had stopped completely and suddenly I heard a grieving, loud scream. He
- 3:37did a lot of echoing. It was horrible. Then another scream was heard
- 3:40again. It was heartbreaking, as if the person who was shouting was being
- 3:46tortured in a rather sadistic and merciless way. Then the dogs barked again,
- 3:53but their bark was different. It wasn' t the typical barking. Dogs
- 3:57sounded very upset. You could even hear some dogs hitting the bars trying to
- 4:04break free. The dogs were crazy. Fear invaded me immediately. I turned
- 4:12all the way looking for the origin of the gruesome whining, but I didn
- 4:16' t see anything out of the ordinary. Those screams began to sound louder
- 4:20and louder and more and more scary. Besides, it seemed that now the
- 4:26screams came from different places. That definitely didn' t make any sense anymore.
- 4:31My heart was beating hard at me by the hour. My body was
- 4:36getting ready to run at any moment, but out of nowhere, the horrible
- 4:41screams vanished. I didn' t have any sleep and I hadn' t
- 4:46consumed it for at least two months. So definitely, those heartbreaking screams had
- 4:50been real the dogs that were still barking at me confirmed that, unfortunately,
- 4:57it wasn' t my imagination. He was still. When I felt a
- 5:01burn in my hand, I immediately let go of the cigarette and it was
- 5:08almost completely consumed. I shook my hand to mitigate the pain while listening.
- 5:12As there were fewer and fewer dogs barking. Everyone finally shut up and the
- 5:17silence took over the place again. Suddenly in the distance I could see a
- 5:23person who was entering the park walking very slowly. I soon realized it was
- 5:29a woman. She was barefoot and her hair was long and black. He
- 5:34came with his head down, so he couldn' t tell a single detail
- 5:39from his face. What I found most curious is that, apparently, he
- 5:43had a baby in his arms, I even think he was singing to him.
- 5:47It was pretty scary. I actually had the impression that that woman might
- 5:51have some illness or mental disorder. I already wanted to go home. Honestly,
- 5:59I was really scared about all the weird things that were going on that
- 6:03night to get my bike, I had to go in the direction the woman
- 6:08was coming from, so I just did. When I passed by her,
- 6:13I could not help but notice that her hands and feet were greyish in tone
- 6:16and the baby she was carrying had somewhat blue skin. I couldn' t
- 6:21see the woman' s face. I remember I could hear you making a
- 6:26noise. They weren' t words, they were more like the sound of
- 6:30a horse. Something similar. I was with her for less than a second,
- 6:34but I became eternal. That woman had a pretty heavy, dense vibe,
- 6:40like she did something really bad for some reason. It occurred to me
- 6:45to look down and I realized that there was a faint drop of blood where
- 6:47the woman had passed. That was a bad sign. Something was definitely wrong
- 6:54with that creepy, sinister woman. Suddenly these terrible screams were heard again.
- 7:00I felt that my ears were going to burst the whining and lamenting were too
- 7:05loud. Immediately after the noise, the barking of the furious dogs was added.
- 7:12There was so much noise that I even threw myself to the floor of
- 7:15despair that I exceeded myself within a few seconds. The noises stopped, but
- 7:20the dogs didn' t shut up, I got up scared and felt the
- 7:25need to turn around to see the woman. When I did she was looking
- 7:29in my direction. Now if I could see him the face had no skin,
- 7:33it was just a skull where the eyes are supposed to go. He
- 7:38had a couple of spheres of burning fire and seemed to be crying blood.
- 7:43I could see better the creature he was carrying and I understood why the baby
- 7:47was crying was dead. I felt a lot of fear and, at the
- 7:53same time, the woman began to emit noises like a dying dog. His
- 7:57whinings were faint, but consistent r s that fear, gave sadness, melancholy
- 8:01and anxiety. The woman turned around and went on her way, while all
- 8:07the dogs in the colony were mad and barking. I stayed there for a
- 8:13few moments, but then I turned around and ran to my bike. I
- 8:18got out of there straight to my house. When I went through the market,
- 8:22I could see a dog hitting his wooden house. As he barked with
- 8:26all his might. The animal' s eyes were dilated and palpitated. It
- 8:31seemed as if the dog was possessed already one block from my house. When
- 8:37I heard a deafening noise, I suddenly braked because of the scare. Then,
- 8:41at the end of the street, I could see that some National Guard
- 8:46vans were passing with the sirens on. I breathed relief, followed my path,
- 8:52and finally, after very distressing moments, I came home. My mom
- 8:56and my brothers were awake because of the deafening. Concert that all the dogs
- 9:01were giving. The first thing I did was ask if anyone had heard what
- 9:07had happened. The answer everyone gave me was that they heard the sirens move
- 9:13fast. They said they were most likely in pursuit. I insisted on my
- 9:18question, but now I was emphasizing whether they had heard screams or anything besides
- 9:24the National Guard sirens.“ The dogs were being carried away by the devil
- 9:30of courage,” my mother said, holding a cup of coffee. They
- 9:33never make so much noise just for the sirens. My sister added it.
- 9:39I asked my mother to make me a tea for the scare and we sat
- 9:41down to talk there. I told you about my meeting with the dark woman.
- 9:48My mother came to me and told me quietly that I had run into
- 9:50the crybaby. As soon as my mother said that, our dogs started barking,
- 10:03she likes orphans. I' ve been orphaned since I was a child.
- 10:11It happened in a road accident. My sisters were fighting and at a
- 10:15certain point, one pushed the other and that caused them to end up moving
- 10:20one of my father' s arms. He was driving. Next thing I
- 10:24know, the truck was upside down. Only I survived In an instant a
- 10:30stupid fight took my family away from me. I remember seeing my mother close
- 10:35her eyes while I looked scared. It' s very difficult to get over
- 10:41something like that. Fortunately, some relatives took care of me. They tucked
- 10:46me in as one more of their sons and my cousins became my brothers.
- 10:52I was never very smart, but I was committed and persevering. I studied
- 10:56at the Hellenic Cultural Institute, but for one thing or another, I had
- 11:01to change to the National School of Anthropology and History to graduate. That was,
- 11:07without a doubt, one of my greatest achievements. Having the opportunity to
- 11:11study the history of Mexico in depth is something incredible. You learn very interesting
- 11:16things. One of the things I liked most about the race was discussing myths
- 11:22and legends that are part of the Mexican folklore. Some of my last works
- 11:28were precisely about all those myths. But from a point of view completely away
- 11:33from the paranormal and having read almost two hundred books that compile stories, I
- 11:39can safely claim that the legend of the crybaby is Mexico' s popular belief.
- 11:45Your Excellency. There' s not a single Mexican who doesn' t
- 11:50know the crybaby. Even if I don' t live in Mexico. Every
- 11:52Mexican heard at least once about the legend of the crybaby. Indeed, various
- 11:58researches have been carried out that seek to give rise to such a memorable myth.
- 12:05The oldest record on the crybaby dates back to the time when Mexican territory
- 12:09was ruled by Moctezuma. Second, history says that the ruler suffered recurring and
- 12:18vivid nightmares that tormented him those dark dreams were rather premonitions about the Spanish conquest
- 12:24that would reach a decade later. During a second Moctezuma meeting with his generals,
- 12:31it was supposed that there was a woman who appeared crying and lamenting during
- 12:35the evenings near the hour, known as Lake Tescoco. It occurred to someone
- 12:41to suggest that possibly the complaints of that suffering woman might have some connection to
- 12:48the ruler’ s nightmares. Moctezuma presumably ordered an investigation of the mysterious female.
- 12:56Those who lived nearby said that the like always allowed laments that were evoked
- 13:01toward their children. Moctezuma is presumed to have associated that woman with an ancient
- 13:07goddess, with the goddess of motherhood. What Moctezuma could not interpret was the
- 13:13reason for the appearance of the goddess who tentatively attempted to warn about the slaughter
- 13:18that the Spanish conquerors would cause when they arrived on the American continent. When
- 13:24the Spaniards arrived, the woman stopped appearing in the lake of Tescoco and it
- 13:30is assumed that it was until after the birth of the new Spain that she
- 13:33returned to allegedly pursue her usurped children, that is, all of us who
- 13:39are descendants of the forced and bloody cross between the Mechicas and Europeans. With
- 13:46those words I finished my job. It seemed like a good ending to my
- 13:50bad luck. There was still one thing left to meet face to face with
- 13:54the ghost of the crybaby. My research had left me with a bittersweet taste.
- 14:01Yes, on a historical level there was not much more to tell,
- 14:05but then I began to wonder if, by chance, there was the remote
- 14:09possibility that all the stories that are told about the apparitions of the crybaby could
- 14:15be real, even a little. It was then that I decided to start
- 14:20another investigation. But now, with an open mind, away from the academic,
- 14:24I contacted a friend who was studying at the Autonomous University of Mexico City
- 14:28and told him about what I was doing. He recommended me to travel to
- 14:35Sochimilco to talk to a person who had some stories that might interest me.
- 14:41I asked him if he' d be willing to join me and he told
- 14:46me he had the weekend available. Two days to go. Saturday afternoon,
- 14:50we were already in Sochimilco. My friend took me to an old house.
- 14:54Inside lived a man already quite old. I would dare say that by the
- 15:00age of ninety the man was blind. I explained to her the reason for
- 15:05my visit and she told me that I could ask her only two questions,
- 15:09since, according to him, the crybaby doesn' t like to be talked
- 15:13about. I thought well the questions I was going to ask and when I
- 15:18decided I told the gentleman where I can find her. How I' ll
- 15:22know I found her. He replied that the first question was very ambiguous,
- 15:26because he said that the crybaby could appear anywhere as long as there was a
- 15:31river nearby, but he told me that the canals of Sochimilco during the night
- 15:35were a good place to start the search. As for the second question,
- 15:39she simply told me if I saw her, there would be no doubt that
- 15:43it was her. We were just gonna go. The gift told me one
- 15:48more thing be careful. He likes orphans. When the lord said that,
- 15:54he turned his face directly to me. Like I said, the gift was
- 15:58blind, but I' m sure for a moment his eyes aligned with mine.
- 16:03That gave me the creeps. Besides, it was impossible for that gentleman
- 16:08to know that I had lost my parents. My friend thanked the lord and
- 16:14we left his house. I was confused because of the last thing the gift
- 16:18had said to me so I asked my friend where I knew him. He
- 16:22replied that he was an old acquaintance of his grandparents. I was trying to
- 16:27put aside the old man' s alleged divination powers. When suddenly my friend
- 16:33asked me if I was actually going to sail through the canals during the night.
- 16:37I said yes. Roads through the streets looking for a boatman who could
- 16:42move us through the night. We didn' t take long to find one
- 16:47he accepted. He told us 11 o' clock we could find him in
- 16:49such a place. It' s time. We were on time. The
- 16:53boatman had already arrived. He said he had to cancel an engagement, so
- 17:00we had to pay more. Yeah, we had enough money, but we
- 17:06wanted to spend it on taking more night, so we protested. We were
- 17:10on it. When suddenly we hear a cry, a lament accompanied by tears.
- 17:15For a moment I thought it was simply a woman, but when that
- 17:18deep cry spread for more than a minute without cutting, I realized that it
- 17:23did not come from an ordinary woman. That scream was rough and scratchy made
- 17:30me tremble with fear. I could see my friend' s pupils dilated.
- 17:36The boatman pulled a rosary out of his pants and held it tight. While
- 17:40saliva was passing, I was scared. The regret slowly faded until there was
- 17:45silence. Then another scream sounded, but they no longer seemed to cry.
- 17:51It sounded more like despair. That scream was grotesque and its sound was ultra
- 17:56- tumba. It had a lot of echo and seemed to emerge from everywhere.
- 18:02The scream didn' t stop, but it sounded farther and farther.
- 18:04So the anchorman told us it was best to get out of there and the
- 18:10guy ran wild. We didn' t understand anything. Then, in front
- 18:17of our eyes, a woman began to come out of the water. I
- 18:19was in shock. My friend pulled me off the shirt and we started running.
- 18:25While we were running away my friend, he kept repeating himself. The
- 18:27crybaby is the crybaby. We stopped running. When we got to a street
- 18:33where there were several people, we were still very upset. We needed a
- 18:40drink. Luckily, there was a place near the corner. I' ve
- 18:45never tried tequila before. Well, that night served me at least three times.
- 18:49We weren' t so nervous anymore. We were there for a while.
- 18:55Then again I heard that terrifying regret immediately I turned to see my friend
- 19:02his face told me everything. He had heard it too, but apparently,
- 19:06we were the only ones, as the rest of the people were still in
- 19:10their own business as if nothing had happened. We concluded that we were imagining
- 19:14it. We had been so shocked that it was normal for our mind to
- 19:18make a bad move on us. I didn' t want to drink anymore,
- 19:22but my friend did. Shortly before 2: 00 in the morning,
- 19:26my friend was already falling out drunk, so it was time to get paid
- 19:30and I helped him out. I wasn' t holding him so he wouldn
- 19:36' t fall. While we were walking, there were no people on the
- 19:41street but if there were any cars that were passing at speed, we had
- 19:47already advanced a couple of blocks. When I heard a noise that lit all
- 19:49my alerts, something was crawling behind us. I speeded up the pace a
- 19:56little while trying to hear what that noise was. It was a strange sound,
- 20:02like the one that makes a cardboard box when it crawls closer and closer.
- 20:07I was getting really nervous. I couldn' t take it anymore and
- 20:11turned around. She was there walking towards us, in her long, broken
- 20:17white dress, with her pale skin and her lost look at my friend even
- 20:22took off her drunkness. As soon as she saw the crybaby, we fortunately
- 20:26managed to escape. I haven' t seen the crybaby since that time.
- 20:30I will never return to his chimilco story written and adapted by Ramiro Contreras
