- 0:16Speaker 3: Spend I'm good, guys, good, very good.
- 0:18Speaker 4: I don't usually does I do the one S and
- 0:20Speaker 4: N and it's kind of a more recent I don't
- 0:21Speaker 4: usually do because get I don't like talking with myself.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Since it's used to And you know, I've got a lot.
- 0:26Speaker 4: Of respect, a lot of time for you both, and
- 0:28Speaker 4: that's why thanks.
- 0:30Speaker 3: For the end.
- 0:31Speaker 5: People ask me like, who's the funniest for me? You're
- 0:35Speaker 5: the funniest player I've played me Rejake, sim do.
- 0:39Speaker 2: You see you're up there with me as well?
- 0:41Speaker 3: Really, I don't have to take that as a compliment.
- 0:44Speaker 4: I know one thing that the last time I get
- 0:46Speaker 4: close this close to Jackie, he took he took a.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Dive on the pitch.
- 0:50Speaker 4: I got a red card and a four game suspension
- 0:52Speaker 4: to a grand fine. And Simon says that you're paying
- 0:55Speaker 4: to fine the days that's I remember that you did
- 1:00Speaker 4: die men and you couldn't tell the truth.
- 1:02Speaker 5: No, my recollection, I've need to look it back and
- 1:06Speaker 5: what year were talking, because that is ninety eight, two
- 1:11Speaker 5: thousand and Martin Neil was a manager.
- 1:14Speaker 4: It must have been one of my last games before
- 1:16Speaker 4: I went to the States, because I like you and
- 1:18Speaker 4: the thing I never pridedly fine in the SVA, so.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Getting what you mean in the club.
- 1:25Speaker 5: Because I remember the time you try to tip my
- 1:28Speaker 5: head off with an elbow and I thought, I thought
- 1:30Speaker 5: we had got on really well.
- 1:31Speaker 4: We spending and we must have been two of the
- 1:34Speaker 4: smallest guys that practice. I've never stood five secs and elbows.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Some usually catch people in the chest, you know, went
- 1:40Speaker 4: So it must have been the second video on the pitch, mate,
- 1:42Speaker 4: I've caught you in the gid. But there's no way
- 1:44Speaker 4: I caught you, mate. When I seen your line of
- 1:45Speaker 4: ground rolling a bit, I was looking for blood.
- 1:47Speaker 3: There was nothing there. So disappointed, But listen, lifelong friends.
- 1:52Speaker 2: And that was, by the way.
- 1:53Speaker 4: That's two teammates as well as Scotland before that obviously.
- 1:58Speaker 2: But when you cross that white liner.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Were you in the twenty ones when I was in
- 2:02Speaker 4: the nationally too? I think you're a bit younger men.
- 2:04Speaker 5: I'm fifty six, I'm fifty three. A couple of months.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Yeah, so I think he was part of the under
- 2:10Speaker 4: twenty ones. Were you in the same squad as Paul Hartley? Now?
- 2:13Speaker 5: Then no, I was after he's a wee bit younger
- 2:16Speaker 5: again and it helped, so I was hardly's a wee
- 2:18Speaker 5: bit you hardly will be. He waved at four or
- 2:24Speaker 5: five years younger and me, I.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Think, yeah, I remember one of the squads. I'm sure
- 2:28Speaker 3: that was doing it.
- 2:29Speaker 4: True in I was three, sat having a conversation about
- 2:32Speaker 4: football outside the hotel and I thought it was I thought.
- 2:35Speaker 1: It was part of remember the trun thing. I remember,
- 2:38Speaker 1: this is what sticks in my head. So we were we.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Were invited for dinner, some sort of meal at the
- 2:45Speaker 4: golf club and there was a few kind of I
- 2:49Speaker 4: don't know if it was the captain of the club
- 2:50Speaker 4: or whatever, and they were asking you if you'd played
- 2:53Speaker 4: we played through, John, if we played through and join
- 2:55Speaker 4: and you just shot the guide the fucking I would
- 2:59Speaker 4: over agree with a quad something along the lines, and
- 3:02Speaker 4: just I just didn't know how to do. I think
- 3:05Speaker 4: there was a lot of people then my lack of
- 3:07Speaker 4: a diligence selfly showed through it.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Coversation did. But yeah, it's lessened life change.
- 3:15Speaker 4: When you're a young footballer coming from Glasgow, everything's about
- 3:18Speaker 4: of laughing a joke and there's probably certain times that
- 3:20Speaker 4: I probably should bear a joke. And there was a
- 3:23Speaker 4: certain times Jackie mentioned earlier about coming back favors at
- 3:26Speaker 4: Moto and I think I talked my way, you're getting
- 3:28Speaker 4: another international.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Cap, but it was at your last cap. I think
- 3:32Speaker 3: it was you know what, I kind of a.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Nine.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Yeah, nobody disrespectful to anybody you were playing. I was
- 3:39Speaker 4: playing every week in the Premiership and I was under
- 3:41Speaker 4: Glenn Glenn Hodo and Peter Shreeves at Chelsea and I
- 3:46Speaker 4: love the way they did things, of the why they
- 3:47Speaker 4: wanted to play. They got the body and in they passed,
- 3:50Speaker 4: and it was always felt that was that was my
- 3:52Speaker 4: type of football.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I wasn't there a four four.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Two guy where you knocked at all your flackorns and
- 3:57Speaker 4: stuff that I didn't enjoy that type of game, so
- 3:59Speaker 4: I'm glai. Then he changed it to three four three,
- 4:02Speaker 4: and then when you would get up to play with
- 4:03Speaker 4: Scotland it was four four two and the message and
- 4:07Speaker 4: I'm not defending I don't want to speak badly any
- 4:09Speaker 4: coaching but that you're just looking at going. The message was, listen,
- 4:12Speaker 4: you know what your socks are for sixty five minutes,
- 4:15Speaker 4: will sub you it, We'll get somebody else on. So
- 4:18Speaker 4: I was like, the first couple of caps I got, Yeah,
- 4:20Speaker 4: I'm buying into that. Right, you're playing for your contrac.
- 4:22Speaker 4: You're on a built a madman and you get subbed
- 4:25Speaker 4: out and then the guy gets subbed then scores.
- 4:26Speaker 3: It going you're kind of gone, just running. He center
- 4:29Speaker 3: backs ragged and the silk comes on, he gets the headlines.
- 4:32Speaker 4: You're kind of going nah. And I remember going to
- 4:35Speaker 4: Molt and I think it was a similar type situation.
- 4:37Speaker 4: I don't know if I get injured.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I was over there.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Training or whatever, and I was thinking to myself, this
- 4:41Speaker 4: is just no working for me. I always felt that
- 4:44Speaker 4: if I was going to way through my wife and
- 4:45Speaker 4: my kids, I had to.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Be for something that I was massively enjoying.
- 4:50Speaker 4: I think with Glenn Hoddle and Peter Seves at Chelsea,
- 4:53Speaker 4: I loved what they were trying to do. I love
- 4:55Speaker 4: getting into training every day because it was just football
- 4:58Speaker 4: for age. Would you have been in the ninety seven
- 5:00Speaker 4: that twenty seven that's still young, Yeah, yeah, twenty seven.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I just wasn't enjoying my football.
- 5:05Speaker 4: And somebody asked me us a couple weeks ago, like
- 5:08Speaker 4: you like you Rangers frying growing up? And I was
- 5:10Speaker 4: like no, I was a Celti fun like why did
- 5:12Speaker 4: you sign for Rangers? And I was like I was
- 5:16Speaker 4: enjoying it and Celtic the Celtic scouts a couple of
- 5:20Speaker 4: times you came to me after it. I was training
- 5:21Speaker 4: at Rangers. Then I signed and I like joy to
- 5:23Speaker 4: come me Celty and I was like, well I'm at Rangers.
- 5:25Speaker 4: And one of the scouts say to me listen, so
- 5:27Speaker 4: and I get fifteen John Spencer's it's Celtic yeah, And
- 5:30Speaker 4: I was like, well, you know I need a sixteenth thing. Yeah.
- 5:33Speaker 4: So I was always kind of a I came for
- 5:35Speaker 4: the Gorbos. I came up through a single parent whatever.
- 5:37Speaker 3: I was.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Always could handle myself rough and ready. Probably hope my
- 5:40Speaker 4: move too much at times killed me at times. But
- 5:43Speaker 4: I always felt that I spoke the truth and it
- 5:45Speaker 4: was transparent with people. What age were you when you
- 5:47Speaker 4: signed the Rangers? Then I went in at twelve. John
- 5:50Speaker 4: care who owned a garage and it pays the road west.
- 5:55Speaker 4: He had connections with Jack Gillespie, the old Rangers director.
- 5:59Speaker 4: I played in Glasgow and I to boys club and
- 6:01Speaker 4: they he asked, after playing a few games, letters and
- 6:04Speaker 4: when you committed to Rangers, and I was like yeah,
- 6:06Speaker 4: and I was thinking about on the drive here I
- 6:08Speaker 4: was going to They ask me this question. And for
- 6:11Speaker 4: me it was always about just played when I just
- 6:13Speaker 4: wanted to play. And even when I left Chelsea it
- 6:16Speaker 4: was because Rude started doing that squad rotation thing and
- 6:20Speaker 4: I was like, I just wanted to play. I didn't
- 6:23Speaker 4: want to sit in the bench for two games a month,
- 6:26Speaker 4: you know, I just wanted to do it for starting games,
- 6:29Speaker 4: finishing games ninety minutes. Platy, you get injured, platy, you
- 6:33Speaker 4: lose form, you're on the bench and in the stand,
- 6:35Speaker 4: then you go again. And that was that was me
- 6:37Speaker 4: throughout my career. Really, Like the only reason I never
- 6:40Speaker 4: never went to Celtic wasn't it because I didn't support
- 6:42Speaker 4: Celtia or I didn't like Celti.
- 6:44Speaker 3: It's just I was it Rangers. I loved there.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Yeah, they treated me ever so well and I didn't
- 6:48Speaker 4: think about Catholic bodies and it was just about football.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Who was the manager then when they signed me John
- 6:54Speaker 4: Greg yeah, because I was like twelve thirteen, so they
- 6:58Speaker 4: wanted to sign me. And then it was I was
- 7:02Speaker 4: too young for the S form and maybe I don't know.
- 7:05Speaker 4: I guess they used to sign S forms and put
- 7:07Speaker 4: them in the drawer right. Well, they never did that.
- 7:09Speaker 4: We mean that one day. One day they called me in.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Me and my mom Mo went into the stadium and
- 7:13Speaker 3: I thought I was going to send an S.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Form and they were like, listen, the religious thing and
- 7:18Speaker 4: all that, and we do why.
- 7:19Speaker 3: To put you under pressure?
- 7:21Speaker 4: And I walked to the club and I was like
- 7:23Speaker 4: in twelve year old and I was like, that's so
- 7:24Speaker 4: I'm going to Dundee United. So I was training with
- 7:26Speaker 4: Day the same because I was trained Dune United. I
- 7:28Speaker 4: think it was like Wednesday. Rangers was like Monday. Shend
- 7:30Speaker 4: with my club last we united during the week the
- 7:33Speaker 4: other nights. And then I was like, I've got to
- 7:34Speaker 4: Dundee United. So we didn't have house phone, so I
- 7:36Speaker 4: went to my Mynie Suss, picked up the phone, phoned
- 7:40Speaker 4: the Dundee United scouted a time, couldn't get audio, must scouting,
- 7:44Speaker 4: And I said to his mys Caesar at his moment
- 7:46Speaker 4: at the I was like, listen, tell me phone when
- 7:48Speaker 4: they get in. So Rangers had obviously thought about my
- 7:50Speaker 4: reaction because I was in tears leaving the stadium. They
- 7:53Speaker 4: must have thought, listen, you get this kid tied up whatever.
- 7:56Speaker 4: So I think I went back and signed the s form,
- 7:58Speaker 4: put it in the drawer, and then Dunde united phone
- 8:00Speaker 4: saying listen, what's the problem.
- 8:01Speaker 3: And I was like, listen, you missed, mister chance. That's
- 8:04Speaker 3: how I went.
- 8:06Speaker 4: And then obviously soon As came in at that time, yeah,
- 8:08Speaker 4: took over at Rangels.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Run about is that run a bit of.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Time viewer right after Mexico clocking with the team, but
- 8:15Speaker 4: you run about the first team they made that That
- 8:17Speaker 4: was the first year soon As came in. It was
- 8:19Speaker 4: the first year as a professional for me.
- 8:21Speaker 3: I loved him.
- 8:22Speaker 4: He was absolute legend, just the rory of the man
- 8:26Speaker 4: when he walked through the stadium, the corridors, the corridors
- 8:29Speaker 4: shook supreme physical condition.
- 8:32Speaker 3: And I was always intrigued beforeign football, so.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Like seeing the shape of them and all that you know,
- 8:37Speaker 4: and always asking him questions about serie and stuff. And
- 8:40Speaker 4: I remember the conversation walking back through the training room
- 8:42Speaker 4: one day and I was holding the balls and if
- 8:43Speaker 4: we got two bags of balls over my shoulders and
- 8:46Speaker 4: we're walking and you.
- 8:47Speaker 3: All said the shots rolled up was a challenge.
- 8:49Speaker 4: I remember, and when the shots rolled up back in
- 8:51Speaker 4: the day and I walked back and I'm thinking, it
- 8:53Speaker 4: is this funk, I'm got to take one of these
- 8:55Speaker 4: bags of ball many killing me And he must have
- 8:57Speaker 4: been going on, I'm no caring for this.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I was carrying these two boys. I don't remember sending
- 9:02Speaker 3: him about.
- 9:03Speaker 4: You know, Serie, I played Sam Dori and stuff, and
- 9:05Speaker 4: it's like Great League and the football, the culture totally differently.
- 9:09Speaker 4: He said to me, listen to man, if you ever
- 9:11Speaker 4: get the chance to go, so always stuck in my mind,
- 9:14Speaker 4: if I get the chance to go and play in Europe,
- 9:16Speaker 4: I would I would take it.
- 9:16Speaker 3: But the opportunity never came.
- 9:18Speaker 4: And then how long after that did it? You kind
- 9:21Speaker 4: of broke around about the first team. I think always
- 9:24Speaker 4: the problem, to be honest with you, I never they
- 9:26Speaker 4: never wanted to put me in because of the Catholic Protestants.
- 9:30Speaker 4: And if I'm being honest with you, because I remember
- 9:32Speaker 4: me and Swiggy we went to play.
- 9:34Speaker 3: I think it was Hibbs reserves of similar age.
- 9:38Speaker 4: I mean Swiggy grew up through Rangers, Amateurs, Scotland school
- 9:41Speaker 4: boys and stuff like that, so we were kind of
- 9:42Speaker 4: like the two young strikers at the club.
- 9:44Speaker 3: It to him.
- 9:45Speaker 4: I always remember we went to Hibbs Easter Road resis
- 9:48Speaker 4: Friday night and they come in before the game.
- 9:51Speaker 3: I was the gaffer.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Walter came in and they're like money matching night, whoever
- 9:55Speaker 4: it is be on the bench for a first team more.
- 9:58Speaker 4: And I was saying, oh my god, what an opportunity.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Someone who played really, really well, scored a couple, sat,
- 10:03Speaker 4: a couple come in and I was waiting, waiting for
- 10:06Speaker 4: the tart, waiting for the tart, and maybe they said nothing.
- 10:09Speaker 3: Swig he was on the bench next day and I
- 10:10Speaker 3: was like, fuck, you know what I mean. It was
- 10:13Speaker 3: like got clipping the balls? Really, you know it?
- 10:16Speaker 4: So I always memember thinking I'm going to get an opportunity,
- 10:18Speaker 4: and I remember being McCall came to me. He's like me, man,
- 10:20Speaker 4: you should have you should have got the opportunity to
- 10:22Speaker 4: be on the bench the first team.
- 10:23Speaker 3: You know.
- 10:23Speaker 4: So it never happens. It wasn't. I think it might
- 10:27Speaker 4: have been. I'm looked saying it was a Catholic position.
- 10:29Speaker 4: I think it could have been. They will just try to.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Protect me from that situation, you know what I mean.
- 10:34Speaker 4: And and then I obviously got my opportunity, and I'm
- 10:38Speaker 4: trying to think. I played in a European game against
- 10:40Speaker 4: Valletta Fimoto, and I played a couple of games.
- 10:43Speaker 3: So family and et cetera.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Never made a lot of appearances, probably be made maybe
- 10:47Speaker 4: ten or twelve, but just came to a stage in
- 10:51Speaker 4: my career where I was like McCoy's hat Lee Johnston
- 10:54Speaker 4: three the best in Europe at that time, and I
- 10:57Speaker 4: never have a gonny breakthrough and it's not really changing.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Think about how hard is it for young SEALTI players,
- 11:02Speaker 4: younger and just plus to break in it the first
- 11:03Speaker 4: team now, so there's so much demand.
- 11:06Speaker 1: And presciently strikers you don't really in recent times, it's
- 11:09Speaker 1: not really been anybody that can anybody that's come in
- 11:13Speaker 1: and like held the position and took the position instead.
- 11:16Speaker 4: So for me, it was like I got to a
- 11:17Speaker 4: stage where I was like I need to go and
- 11:19Speaker 4: play because I went to Hong Kong and eighty nine
- 11:22Speaker 4: for a year. What was that brilliant brilliant.
- 11:26Speaker 3: You enjoyed that.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Yeah, soon as came to me one day, I was
- 11:29Speaker 4: on fire and the reserves, like the reserve that what
- 11:32Speaker 4: wasn't dating me any good?
- 11:33Speaker 2: This was this was before you get in.
- 11:35Speaker 3: This was when did Hong Kong get over? Eighty nine
- 11:38Speaker 3: n nineteen.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Eighty nine even there, I feel yea yeah. Nineteen eighty
- 11:43Speaker 4: nine went out there playing a team called Li Son.
- 11:47Speaker 4: It was owned by the guy owned the team owned
- 11:50Speaker 4: like Lacoste rights in Asia, and then he did that
- 11:54Speaker 4: like kind of rapa version and they called it Crocodiles.
- 11:59Speaker 3: It was meant to it's crazy stuff.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Get that we get a game for We had Yeager
- 12:05Speaker 4: club suits, right, you sort you had to get into
- 12:07Speaker 4: the club shut and tie every day, right, So I
- 12:10Speaker 4: had been like Yeager suits, boss suits or whatever.
- 12:12Speaker 3: It was shut and tie every day to rangers.
- 12:14Speaker 4: All of a sudden, soon as she was like listen,
- 12:17Speaker 4: you're going to Hong Kong and I was like what
- 12:19Speaker 4: he go, yeah, you're not going to play here. They said,
- 12:21Speaker 4: Reserve it was doing any good. We're going to get
- 12:23Speaker 4: you on law into Hong Kong. And I was like,
- 12:24Speaker 4: what's that. He's like random and it's like somewhere you
- 12:28Speaker 4: have a connection with that, not like you think about
- 12:30Speaker 4: it now, like if someday comes you but al right,
- 12:31Speaker 4: you go out on your phone, google my apps whatever,
- 12:34Speaker 4: you know what it is.
- 12:35Speaker 3: I was like a clue. So fast forward. I'm out
- 12:39Speaker 3: in Hong Kong.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Get out there, and we're training and changing rooms like
- 12:44Speaker 4: a tenement building and downtown Hong Kong. That's places and
- 12:52Speaker 4: mingo in here, so like you got and it's like
- 12:57Speaker 4: three bedroom, four bedroom apartment.
- 12:58Speaker 3: I was standing up with the boys. Most of the team.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Boys stayed their bunk beds all over the place. Here's
- 13:04Speaker 4: your gear rolled up, and I'm thinking, my god, we
- 13:06Speaker 4: get a gear off folded at rangers and all that stuff.
- 13:09Speaker 4: What doing across the street Anty Happy Valley Racecourse? Then
- 13:13Speaker 4: with all the teams in the league trained inside the
- 13:16Speaker 4: racecourse because it was multiple football pitchers and so about
- 13:19Speaker 4: the first I don't know. I think must have been
- 13:22Speaker 4: in the first two weeks. I've been over there with
- 13:24Speaker 4: a ten on my pocket, right, I've been over there.
- 13:27Speaker 4: Nay money, I'm not going to get who was in
- 13:30Speaker 4: the team with me. Steve Wafford, big Wally was there.
- 13:34Speaker 4: He was the kind of big name English player they
- 13:36Speaker 4: signed and I was just let we rag him off
- 13:38Speaker 4: and they took it and j you know what meant.
- 13:40Speaker 4: So I went over there first ten twelve days, name
- 13:42Speaker 4: money whatever. Wally looked after me and eventually went to
- 13:45Speaker 4: the owners. She's listening, you need to pay me my salary.
- 13:47Speaker 4: I've get told I'm getting five on aquid a week,
- 13:50Speaker 4: whether it's tax free, give me more money. He's like, no, money,
- 13:54Speaker 4: come money, come tournament this weekend, money, come money, and
- 13:57Speaker 4: so we'll go claim this serving a side tournament.
- 13:59Speaker 3: The full size pitch and this big stadium in Hong
- 14:03Speaker 3: Kong is unbelievable. So I'm like, you know seven aside,
- 14:07Speaker 3: that's full pitch.
- 14:08Speaker 4: They're like, yeah, there's no off side. I said the boy,
- 14:16Speaker 4: just get a boy, just hump. I'll get on it
- 14:19Speaker 4: in fact, so sure enough, I'm standing happy. L like
- 14:22Speaker 4: one big stupid center center defender was at that age,
- 14:25Speaker 4: I was rapid quick, so they'd want to knock out
- 14:28Speaker 4: as I wanted one foot from the goal.
- 14:29Speaker 3: He goes, I's going back halfful of goals.
- 14:33Speaker 4: After the tournament Monday morning and I got to sit
- 14:35Speaker 4: to the owner, get me a flight, homemie Scotland.
- 14:37Speaker 3: I'm going home. This is why there's no money. I'm
- 14:40Speaker 3: not playing. I'm going home.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Go over the training. He's come running, big, heavy guy,
- 14:48Speaker 4: heavy guy. He's come runn He's got a brown Velo spencer,
- 14:53Speaker 4: it's a com calendar and got the pitch. He goes,
- 14:55Speaker 4: there's your money for the month. And I was like, all.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Right, I'll stay.
- 15:00Speaker 4: So that was me again to the groove and I
- 15:02Speaker 4: eventually won the foreign played a year in the league, scored.
- 15:05Speaker 3: The barrelful of goals. It was they seven a side
- 15:07Speaker 3: off season was name the last game.
- 15:10Speaker 4: So one of the last games was Everton, right before
- 15:13Speaker 4: Itali united. So Everyton came over at end of the season
- 15:16Speaker 4: and we played them in a like a league selecting
- 15:20Speaker 4: versus Everton and scored a couple in the game finished
- 15:24Speaker 4: two two when then the penalty scored the penalty shootout,
- 15:26Speaker 4: and then after the game, Colin Harvey, the Evert manager,
- 15:28Speaker 4: seemingly bid for me.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Then Walter turned it down. When you let me go?
- 15:32Speaker 3: So I came back to Rangers, and when I came
- 15:34Speaker 3: back it was so.
- 15:34Speaker 2: That's that's when you get into the first movie. After
- 15:37Speaker 2: the Hong Kong.
- 15:38Speaker 3: Episode, when I came back. It was a different animal.
- 15:40Speaker 4: I'd seen different culture and I had like seen successful
- 15:43Speaker 4: playing in front of twenty five thirty thousand every week.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:46Speaker 4: One we beat the big team. I think it was
- 15:48Speaker 4: like Hong Kong. I can't remember the big name at
- 15:51Speaker 4: that time, beating them in.
- 15:52Speaker 3: The final scored the winner won.
- 15:53Speaker 4: That was Cup league, the fished sixteen teams. It was
- 16:00Speaker 4: a semi pro amagur thing. They police did the team
- 16:02Speaker 4: Hong Kong Police did a team in the league and
- 16:04Speaker 4: you played them. My god, I used to put it
- 16:08Speaker 4: unbelievable experience, but I came back for it. Yeah, And
- 16:13Speaker 4: I never touched alcohol when I came back, I thought
- 16:15Speaker 4: because over that was so hot and humid, and it
- 16:18Speaker 4: was like you drunk next to my full.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Days Robin drink over that yea.
- 16:27Speaker 4: So I came back a completely different like person stayed
- 16:32Speaker 4: after drink, and I think within maybe four or five games,
- 16:38Speaker 4: I was getting into the first team.
- 16:40Speaker 3: But still you had hate Lee McCoys and Johnson there.
- 16:43Speaker 1: So then what happens for you after this thing? Because
- 16:46Speaker 1: you obviously traveled into London. How did that come about?
- 16:49Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 16:49Speaker 4: I played the first two reserve games of the season.
- 16:52Speaker 4: And I think at that time Chelsea had Ken Bates,
- 16:55Speaker 4: the owner, had done a deal with David Murray to
- 16:57Speaker 4: rebuild Stamford Bridge, because I think Murdy at that time
- 17:01Speaker 4: a national metal so ken Bates told me the story.
- 17:05Speaker 4: So I playing the resies, me and Swiggy. I think
- 17:08Speaker 4: the first game we play Saint Johnson and me Dermid
- 17:14Speaker 4: we beat them ten to nothing, scored six.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Second game we.
- 17:17Speaker 4: Play Hibbs at Ibrooks and the first team are obviously
- 17:20Speaker 4: playing away beating phone all scored three. And on the
- 17:25Speaker 4: Monday morning, I think Chelsea said the deal was with
- 17:28Speaker 4: Chelse ken Bates told me was They said, listen, come up,
- 17:31Speaker 4: take such a big squad, the first team writing Ferguson's
- 17:34Speaker 4: or his boys, Peter Houstra, we're aking, and you know
- 17:36Speaker 4: the first team they want to reduced the wage ball.
- 17:39Speaker 4: So I believe that the scout come up to watch
- 17:41Speaker 4: the games, watch the two reserve games, reported back to
- 17:44Speaker 4: ken Bates, who don't take any of the pros to
- 17:46Speaker 4: the boy, and I think they bought me for three
- 17:50Speaker 4: hundred grand and I went doing and we went on
- 17:53Speaker 4: a trip to La Half.
- 17:54Speaker 3: It was like money. They kind of Chelsea La Half connections.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Right, and we went Chelsea on the first to visitors
- 18:00Speaker 1: point Chelsea in the Premier League.
- 18:01Speaker 3: I tell you when I.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Went there, that was the first year of Sky Sports
- 18:05Speaker 4: took over nat too, and so they did the thing
- 18:12Speaker 4: with have and he told me that in an elevator
- 18:13Speaker 4: trip and down he goes.
- 18:14Speaker 3: You're my player, they said, And I was like, how's that?
- 18:18Speaker 4: And he told me the story that they wanted me
- 18:21Speaker 4: to take these older, like first team players, and the
- 18:23Speaker 4: scouts said this and that, so to make sure you
- 18:26Speaker 4: did well for me and all this stuff.
- 18:27Speaker 3: And I was like, yeah, no problem.
- 18:29Speaker 4: So when then a few years later they get a
- 18:31Speaker 4: new contract and I never agreed the deal. I came
- 18:33Speaker 4: out of the office and Bates he was sitting in
- 18:35Speaker 4: his office and he tapped him and he says, came here.
- 18:37Speaker 4: I stopped my head and he goes, what did they
- 18:39Speaker 4: offer you? That says five a week. He says, get
- 18:43Speaker 4: six and a half.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Year lo And I turned in the deal and end
- 18:49Speaker 3: up got the money that bakes They told me that
- 18:50Speaker 3: I get. So he looked at him.
- 18:53Speaker 4: Your times in Chelsea then, so you must have played
- 18:56Speaker 4: a few top players.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Was bullied there. It was that yeah, Craig. Me and
- 19:01Speaker 3: Craig were in the regids for a long time. I went,
- 19:03Speaker 3: there was he already there? Yeah, Greg been there. I
- 19:06Speaker 3: think Craig went, there's a young Scots doing.
- 19:10Speaker 4: He went doing a or big copy was probably Hoppy
- 19:14Speaker 4: and Denny mckinnis came doing actually the same time.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Yeah, of course that.
- 19:18Speaker 4: Yeah, in that time it was all about pacing, power
- 19:20Speaker 4: and tackling, and Hoppy was tailor made.
- 19:24Speaker 5: For that long throwing as well.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Yeah, Hoppy was browing, man.
- 19:28Speaker 4: He came down and at that time, I don't know
- 19:29Speaker 4: if you ever remember, they be kind of cotton shots
- 19:32Speaker 4: used to wear.
- 19:34Speaker 3: We poking in the back. Yeah, so we're still wearing
- 19:36Speaker 3: there with Chelsea.
- 19:38Speaker 4: We'll still wearing with Chelsea and be it ranges me
- 19:41Speaker 4: like the best, the best you had if you remember,
- 19:43Speaker 4: they like he just equipment gear. Remember that it was
- 19:45Speaker 4: the Buyer Munich jersey with a few stripes and we'd
- 19:48Speaker 4: admir own training gear was amazing. And I remember getting
- 19:50Speaker 4: in the first day and only stuff and I was like,
- 19:54Speaker 4: what was getting on here?
- 19:56Speaker 3: Man? What have I come to?
- 19:57Speaker 4: And remember big Cascardino, she is the higher note range mate,
- 20:00Speaker 4: you know, And I was like it's mad.
- 20:02Speaker 2: That's mad because you think that likes a Chelsea nowadays and.
- 20:07Speaker 4: So big Hoppy and Derrick mckinness they came doing and
- 20:09Speaker 4: I can't remember that was my first year or maybe
- 20:11Speaker 4: second year, but they can doing Hoppy his brobing mate.
- 20:13Speaker 4: It's like hot short Hamish. The picture of the picture
- 20:18Speaker 4: was like solid copies. You get big aluminium screw, pure
- 20:21Speaker 4: mustard belting.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Down the way. I remember I'm shooting kind of teeth
- 20:30Speaker 3: take his teeth up before and he's shooting his list.
- 20:35Speaker 4: And I was like, oh my god. They didn't know
- 20:38Speaker 4: how to take them. They couldn't understand me. They certainly
- 20:40Speaker 4: couldn't understand that. And the eventually they signed them, they said,
- 20:45Speaker 4: and then it was obviously a cultural midfield player when
- 20:48Speaker 4: he came doing, you know, I think he ended up.
- 20:50Speaker 3: I think he went back to what and then end
- 20:52Speaker 3: up went to Rangers Rangels After that, who was the man?
- 20:54Speaker 2: Is it that Chilsea?
- 20:55Speaker 4: Then I think it might have been in Portfield Field
- 21:00Speaker 4: and then with Dane Portfield and then he left and
- 21:04Speaker 4: then they brought Dave Webbing and Dave Webb.
- 21:07Speaker 3: I'll never forget it.
- 21:09Speaker 4: He pulled me and he was like listen, I don't
- 21:11Speaker 4: like wee players just so we get more time. And
- 21:15Speaker 4: he goes, I don't like we players at all, So
- 21:17Speaker 4: I like bad guys. And he was a manager of
- 21:18Speaker 4: South End. It was like back to front foot. Remember
- 21:21Speaker 4: he was chelseason maybe it was in nineteen seventy or
- 21:25Speaker 4: seventy one. F he cut winning captain right and so
- 21:28Speaker 4: I don't like wee players, this says, But they tell
- 21:29Speaker 4: me you can finish, he said, So if you get
- 21:31Speaker 4: an opportunity, he says, finish. I was like, sorry, all
- 21:35Speaker 4: I want is the opportunity. So first four or five
- 21:37Speaker 4: games didn't he happened. Then I got an opportunity to
- 21:40Speaker 4: score goals in the team and that was me to
- 21:41Speaker 4: end of the season. And then they brought Glenn Hoddle
- 21:44Speaker 4: and it was like changed.
- 21:46Speaker 3: Then he changed.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Then he changed right away from me. Glenn made a
- 21:49Speaker 4: couple of signings and I was scoring in the resies
- 21:53Speaker 4: regular and I always remember my remit was when it
- 22:00Speaker 4: wasn't he working out for me? And I knew I
- 22:01Speaker 4: was there a training a little base because I was
- 22:03Speaker 4: a good trainer, yea. And for me playing in the
- 22:06Speaker 4: Regies wasn't a problem. Was a problem for a lot
- 22:08Speaker 4: of people. I grew up playing in the reserves. We
- 22:10Speaker 4: were rangels, so I didn't care where I was playing,
- 22:12Speaker 4: at Kingstonians or half a Bridge. I was like, get
- 22:15Speaker 4: my football school, yeah you know. And I always remember
- 22:18Speaker 4: I started getting we bit rowdy and I always I
- 22:22Speaker 4: was shouting at it. Tell my boy, don't come fucking
- 22:25Speaker 4: asking for my goals at Christmas time when you're fighting relegation.
- 22:28Speaker 4: And I'd shouted walking through the corridors and the doors
- 22:31Speaker 4: were shut to the gaffer's office and that the doors
- 22:34Speaker 4: would shut.
- 22:34Speaker 3: And sure enough they came asking for my goals.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Runn about Christmas time when they were struggling and I
- 22:40Speaker 4: got in the team scored at Sheffild Wednesday way in
- 22:42Speaker 4: the FA Cup replay, and then we went to the
- 22:45Speaker 4: FA Cup final and that was me and the team
- 22:47Speaker 4: back in the team I was paying in the ass.
- 22:49Speaker 4: I'm the first one I meet it. I was uncoachable
- 22:52Speaker 4: at times. Un coach will probably something to do with
- 22:55Speaker 4: my upbringing. I always like, as I said, I came
- 22:57Speaker 4: up through a single parent family and always managed myself.
- 23:02Speaker 5: So I was like I was like the Sun and
- 23:05Speaker 5: Glenn because I was like, how he has.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Glenn kept the teammated like City. Yeah, for months.
- 23:12Speaker 4: I was at the team for months and Sheffie wentz
- 23:16Speaker 4: the wear in the cup and then we get in,
- 23:18Speaker 4: we go on a run, we get battled with Man
- 23:21Speaker 4: United in the fause.
- 23:22Speaker 5: I really enjoyed working under him. When I went to Wolves,
- 23:26Speaker 5: I thought he was the way ahead of these years
- 23:28Speaker 5: football wise, how he wanted to play and I know
- 23:31Speaker 5: the other ones that he may be not handle sitting individuals,
- 23:36Speaker 5: you know what I mean. I think he liked being
- 23:39Speaker 5: the obviously the main man, but he could still do
- 23:41Speaker 5: it as well, couldn't.
- 23:42Speaker 4: He was unlable because he used to join. Yeah, I
- 23:45Speaker 4: used to join in the training. I don't know if
- 23:46Speaker 4: he did that Wolves, and I always remember.
- 23:49Speaker 2: They're still he's still playing. Was he still?
- 23:51Speaker 3: Yeah? Manager.
- 23:55Speaker 4: I was never one for like juggling with the ball
- 23:57Speaker 4: like see the the world, balancing it by your head.
- 24:01Speaker 4: I used to I was like, you never use that
- 24:03Speaker 4: shit in the game, you know what I mean. I
- 24:05Speaker 4: was like a control past move and anyway Glenn came
- 24:09Speaker 4: in and Glenn, I don't know if he did this
- 24:10Speaker 4: up move Jackie, but a lot in the first fifteen
- 24:12Speaker 4: twenty minutes of training any times was technical work.
- 24:15Speaker 3: I didn't mind doing the vall. He's not that. It
- 24:18Speaker 3: was like controlling the left like at the Rain. I
- 24:20Speaker 3: was going and every day you.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Go eat partner up and I'm like, but spending you
- 24:25Speaker 4: coming me? I'm sure this guy's day nisty pistage, you
- 24:30Speaker 4: know what I mean. So anyway, I became, I became
- 24:33Speaker 4: a better I became a better footballer for a working
- 24:36Speaker 4: room and I'll never forget it. He pulled me one
- 24:39Speaker 4: day and I don't know if I was getting to Massadi,
- 24:41Speaker 4: they're probably going to Massordid, but pre game in the dressroom,
- 24:44Speaker 4: I was one of the annoying fucking players. Right there
- 24:48Speaker 4: was loud and and it was laughing, you know what
- 24:51Speaker 4: I mean, And probably some guys were. He was probably saying,
- 24:54Speaker 4: this guy's get me a fucking headache before the game,
- 24:56Speaker 4: do you know what I mean? And he pulled me
- 24:58Speaker 4: on a Monday morning and he was like and the
- 25:01Speaker 4: way he explained it, it kind of a it just
- 25:03Speaker 4: hit home and he was like, you know what, I've
- 25:05Speaker 4: like watched you for a number of weeks. It said
- 25:07Speaker 4: you've got some talent, it's but see you use all
- 25:11Speaker 4: your mental energy before the game, he goes, and you're
- 25:16Speaker 4: geting into the pitch and I don't see as effective
- 25:18Speaker 4: as you could be.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Its dami a favor. It is Leicster this weekend. This
- 25:23Speaker 3: is at home.
- 25:24Speaker 4: You're going to start, he says, saying nothing before the game,
- 25:29Speaker 4: almost meditate right, I was.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Try to help me. You Ca'm done. I thought, you
- 25:38Speaker 3: know that. I remember sitting by like I'm going to
- 25:43Speaker 3: start the slashing against the wall before games.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Before the game was started, I thought myself, you know,
- 25:48Speaker 4: let see if I maybe don't take his advice, I
- 25:50Speaker 4: might end up with the team.
- 25:51Speaker 3: And I've worked hard to try and get in. So
- 25:53Speaker 3: I sat there and I was like, all right, man,
- 25:55Speaker 3: remember sitting.
- 25:55Speaker 4: Going okay, just focus in the game. Just what you're
- 25:58Speaker 4: going to take control. I get it first, simple and
- 26:01Speaker 4: the game ellie, I mean minute and a half, score ahead,
- 26:08Speaker 4: score again, set up one.
- 26:10Speaker 3: I come off, we's cut a point.
- 26:12Speaker 4: And he says to me, told you and I changed
- 26:15Speaker 4: for that day on and did it from my whole career,
- 26:18Speaker 4: and I mean the whole career you finished. Yeah, And
- 26:20Speaker 4: I was the one for sitting earphones on, like playing
- 26:23Speaker 4: music and all that. I just used to go for
- 26:26Speaker 4: whistle goes, get on the ball as quick as you
- 26:28Speaker 4: can control it. Simple, simplify the game, keep bill confidence,
- 26:31Speaker 4: et cetera.
- 26:32Speaker 3: And it stuck with me. T retired at thirtyfoone. It's
- 26:36Speaker 3: amazing that did he bring Yeah he did make Yeah
- 26:41Speaker 3: rude was unbelievable football.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Through that time. Then you must have played with huge there.
- 26:47Speaker 4: I know you. Parker was the yeah, yeah, top players.
- 26:50Speaker 4: I look back even at Rangers and you go Sooners, Walkins,
- 26:57Speaker 4: hate Lee Johnson. Marris Johnson was the creamery crop. Honestly
- 27:02Speaker 4: had everything. He was unbelievable in their three size left foot,
- 27:06Speaker 4: right foot, just he didn't you eat everything. It was
- 27:10Speaker 4: a complete fowoard. He was probably more unselfish than koysty
- 27:15Speaker 4: Koisty was like a supreme goal scorers. But I think
- 27:18Speaker 4: if you re turnround and say who was the best
- 27:22Speaker 4: all round at the three, I would probably say, yeah, yeah,
- 27:26Speaker 4: he was magnificent. So I look at the look at
- 27:28Speaker 4: the Empy right and you're going, yeah, Ray Wilkins as
- 27:30Speaker 4: soon as Butcher like legends in the game, right.
- 27:35Speaker 3: And then I go down to Chelsea and you're going
- 27:38Speaker 3: Sparky Zola. So really you know to be Honestly, I.
- 27:45Speaker 4: Look back and I was actually blessed to play with
- 27:48Speaker 4: some unbelievablelayers. Dan Petrescu. Dam Petresco made me so many
- 27:54Speaker 4: chances and goals. He was one of the best fullbacks.
- 27:58Speaker 4: I thinks every.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Blessed, which obviously I look back and certain guys that
- 28:03Speaker 1: I've played with and I regard myself the same. But
- 28:07Speaker 1: you've actually the longevity there despite all the players coming,
- 28:11Speaker 1: you still held your own in that team.
- 28:13Speaker 3: I did.
- 28:14Speaker 4: I think that it changed when right after the ninety
- 28:19Speaker 4: six Euros the club changed. That's when like they were
- 28:23Speaker 4: really looking to bring in elite footballers. Right if Yale
- 28:27Speaker 4: came in, Zola him in and Zola I remember first
- 28:32Speaker 4: his tray and I always felt I was kind of decent.
- 28:34Speaker 4: But if you put me in the right system, I
- 28:35Speaker 4: could play. If you're playing as a CGL at four
- 28:38Speaker 4: folto just you wouldn't see me. I wasn't effective. You
- 28:42Speaker 4: put me in at the seven or the eleven position.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Ten whatever I can link up, I can control, I
- 28:47Speaker 4: can see passes and stuff like the quickest in the world.
- 28:50Speaker 3: But you're looking at I remember Zola cam In and
- 28:55Speaker 3: we played eleven v. Eleven.
- 28:56Speaker 4: I went in there as he's he was one of
- 28:59Speaker 4: the front two. And they took three kicks playing a
- 29:02Speaker 4: game and read calls a foul to a free kick.
- 29:05Speaker 4: Ben it's a crop top of the cross, bargains over
- 29:08Speaker 4: to another one, bends at the top quality, another one
- 29:11Speaker 4: keeper polls off of world.
- 29:12Speaker 3: They take another one scores and.
- 29:13Speaker 4: I've got the holy less guys like elite, elite football.
- 29:20Speaker 4: And he was the same height as me and the
- 29:22Speaker 4: nicest guy that you could ever meet. And I remember
- 29:24Speaker 4: sitting and talked to for I was about stretching and
- 29:27Speaker 4: the preparation and how he eats, and my god, the
- 29:31Speaker 4: guy wasn't he only wasn't he just one of the
- 29:33Speaker 4: best footballs in Europe at the time. Was just like
- 29:35Speaker 4: as a human being, he was unbelievable guy. So I'll
- 29:38Speaker 4: look back and I go gez Man coming through backingf
- 29:43Speaker 4: playing like big games, playing all the big stadiums, played
- 29:46Speaker 4: better players that I kind of ever dreamed about playing
- 29:48Speaker 4: way And that's how I feel blessed about my my
- 29:51Speaker 4: career side.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Did you hold Zola is the best of the buncher?
- 29:57Speaker 4: I think I think like individual talent, he was absolutely incredible,
- 30:03Speaker 4: but he couldn't play as a six. Rud could play
- 30:07Speaker 4: as a sweeper. In the world class, you could put
- 30:11Speaker 4: them right back. The better on Kyle Walker, you could
- 30:14Speaker 4: put left. He could play anywhere in the in the
- 30:17Speaker 4: on the pitch. In the world class we played. I
- 30:21Speaker 4: was at Liverpool think it was Liverpool and a cup
- 30:23Speaker 4: and he started as a sweeper right and we went,
- 30:26Speaker 4: they went go. I was on the bench and they
- 30:28Speaker 4: went a couple of goals behind, and then he put
- 30:30Speaker 4: them up front as a striker, change the game. You're
- 30:33Speaker 4: kind of this guy's like six foot four and his
- 30:38Speaker 4: knees was shot. I remember, I'm kind of getting his
- 30:40Speaker 4: knees clicked, like before training in the morning, and he
- 30:42Speaker 4: was only a pitch and you're going, this guy is
- 30:44Speaker 4: just And that's what you talk about when you had
- 30:46Speaker 4: if you're an honest player, if you're an honest player,
- 30:49Speaker 4: like I was going to come off a really good
- 30:51Speaker 4: season a half at Chelsea and I was felt I
- 30:53Speaker 4: was one of the men players there.
- 30:54Speaker 3: And then when you bring that like Zola and pull
- 30:56Speaker 3: it and you kind of got mm hm.
- 30:58Speaker 4: You kind of find your level your mind, you kind
- 31:00Speaker 4: of go, I'm no really anywhere near that quality. But
- 31:04Speaker 4: that's why these guys have been playing and selling. Had
- 31:06Speaker 4: one balling doors and one European Cups.
- 31:08Speaker 3: You know what.
- 31:08Speaker 4: A minute's kind of a it's a great leveler in
- 31:11Speaker 4: your mind where you kind of brings you down a
- 31:12Speaker 4: begg or two.
- 31:13Speaker 2: But as I said, nothing but admiration for them as
- 31:16Speaker 2: he took over, eventually didn't they were you still there? Then?
- 31:19Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 31:19Speaker 4: He was the one that I've seen the podcast before,
- 31:22Speaker 4: but mess me about a couple of times we went
- 31:25Speaker 4: and played at Bolton. I was always a guy that
- 31:27Speaker 4: you get the best do to me by going listen,
- 31:30Speaker 4: here's what I rate you, Here's what I think you're
- 31:32Speaker 4: going to day in on the pitch for us, here's
- 31:35Speaker 4: your role. I would go, then, no, I don't want
- 31:39Speaker 4: to play one game a month. I'm getting I'm out
- 31:42Speaker 4: here a way to go or about it? Right?
- 31:43Speaker 3: Okay? So he would.
- 31:45Speaker 4: He was that kind of manager where you play a
- 31:47Speaker 4: Living via Living a Friday. She's right, okay, Remember we
- 31:51Speaker 4: play bolting Away. I scored bolting Away. We come back,
- 31:53Speaker 4: we're playing Spots on the Saturday and it's like Friday
- 31:58Speaker 4: pregame prep Living via Living. I'm flying a book I
- 32:01Speaker 4: can create a couple of goal for sparkying the eleven
- 32:03Speaker 4: v eleven against the reserves as what we need.
- 32:07Speaker 3: That's me.
- 32:08Speaker 4: You go in there, your teacher shut You'll think you're
- 32:10Speaker 4: shut half, you're tie half. You're kind of look at
- 32:12Speaker 4: the team in the boone and you're going where I
- 32:15Speaker 4: spenny number. So, but I'm on, I don't want to
- 32:22Speaker 4: swear on the podcast, but I'm kind of going, that's
- 32:24Speaker 4: this is. I just don't think that's where you treat players, right,
- 32:28Speaker 4: I don't. So I went to see I was like,
- 32:32Speaker 4: that's you're not going anywhere. And that's when I started singing,
- 32:34Speaker 4: like please release me, let me go. They talked my voice.
- 32:37Speaker 4: That week, I came back it again for the Gorbos
- 32:39Speaker 4: and just caused mayhem upon mayhem and he kind of
- 32:42Speaker 4: treated me poorly, and I was like, I remember one
- 32:45Speaker 4: of my last meetings.
- 32:46Speaker 3: I went into him. I said to him, rude, listen,
- 32:49Speaker 3: you're going to being so disrespectful me.
- 32:51Speaker 4: You need to let me go. You're not going anywhere.
- 32:53Speaker 4: I said, well, listen, here here's how it is. This
- 32:55Speaker 4: is how it's going to get down. I'll see your
- 32:58Speaker 4: team on a Friday. I'm going to release your team
- 33:01Speaker 4: to repress.
- 33:03Speaker 3: You don't let me go.
- 33:04Speaker 4: He said that, because it's like, you're not going to
- 33:07Speaker 4: ruin my career. I worked so hard to get it
- 33:10Speaker 4: in that position. As I said, you're all I want
- 33:13Speaker 4: is respect, Yeah, disrespect. I think it's the best way
- 33:16Speaker 4: to be as a manager, and I was as a
- 33:17Speaker 4: coach and MLS myself it's like, you're no going to
- 33:21Speaker 4: it's not going to fit for you here, but I'm
- 33:22Speaker 4: going to have it. I can to get you to
- 33:24Speaker 4: your city, to a team that you want to go
- 33:26Speaker 4: to where you want to go. And that's how I worked.
- 33:28Speaker 4: Were the players that I walked to we in America
- 33:30Speaker 4: when I was the head coach at the Portland Timber.
- 33:31Speaker 4: So that for me, I was like, listen this, I'm
- 33:35Speaker 4: at my happiest as a human being as a player
- 33:38Speaker 4: when I'm playing right. So at that time, Strasbourg came
- 33:41Speaker 4: in for me and I was thinking, what are you
- 33:43Speaker 4: going to play? And in France to be brilliant, QPR
- 33:46Speaker 4: bid more money.
- 33:47Speaker 3: I ended up. I went to QPR and I was
- 33:50Speaker 3: just shut the door and the doors.
- 33:52Speaker 5: Did that kind of Dutch way as well, that sometimes
- 33:54Speaker 5: they're communication, you know.
- 33:56Speaker 3: I think that arrogant.
- 33:57Speaker 4: I think I've seen them and as I say, yeah,
- 34:00Speaker 4: think that man management let him do. And I think
- 34:01Speaker 4: it showed that at Newcastle when he went and he
- 34:03Speaker 4: kind of tried to make a point where allan share
- 34:05Speaker 4: that's right, right, rude, he could He's seen the name.
- 34:10Speaker 3: He was a very very good coach.
- 34:12Speaker 4: I've seen him making tactical substitutions and that you've got
- 34:14Speaker 4: one fair playmate, that's I think you see what you
- 34:17Speaker 4: were then there and worked too and the team won.
- 34:20Speaker 4: So I tipped my hat after you as a tactical coach.
- 34:24Speaker 4: The thing that let him do was mad management and
- 34:27Speaker 4: I think that to be.
- 34:28Speaker 2: I do you think that is?
- 34:29Speaker 3: I don't know. I think that is it possible? I mean,
- 34:31Speaker 3: I don't. I don't have the answer to you. I've
- 34:33Speaker 3: got to the answer to it.
- 34:34Speaker 4: I'm going to throw it back to you and say,
- 34:36Speaker 4: is it possible that you become that good a footballer
- 34:40Speaker 4: that you can almost look and doing people in a
- 34:43Speaker 4: sense that the hare knows And then when you try
- 34:45Speaker 4: to explain, you'd maybe not get the point across, or
- 34:48Speaker 4: it's like I need to get the point across because
- 34:50Speaker 4: I'm so.
- 34:51Speaker 5: A better level. I've thought that, like growing up, like
- 34:55Speaker 5: Doug Leash was my hero, and I always said, like
- 34:58Speaker 5: I walked under Kenny Itseltic and I thought he'd be like,
- 35:03Speaker 5: we're shite.
- 35:03Speaker 3: Yeah, you know.
- 35:04Speaker 5: I mean we took off with John Barnes, but he
- 35:06Speaker 5: was a complete opposite. He's like encouraging and you know,
- 35:10Speaker 5: praising and stuff like that, and he took us to
- 35:13Speaker 5: the end of that season before Matt and Eel come in.
- 35:15Speaker 5: But when I worked with Glenn Hoddle, who was arguably
- 35:19Speaker 5: one of a top top player as well. He worked
- 35:21Speaker 5: under Glenn, but Glenn, for me, was very frustrated. Maybe
- 35:25Speaker 5: bit's because we were doing set PCEs or you know
- 35:28Speaker 5: with Paulins and dan anderm that we stood in the
- 35:31Speaker 5: set pieces and he would just go right and then
- 35:33Speaker 5: you're going and get the bond Doty sell.
- 35:35Speaker 3: So it was like a frustration, Yeah, because I can
- 35:38Speaker 3: I can relate to that.
- 35:39Speaker 5: Yeah, But I thought he was way ahead of his time,
- 35:42Speaker 5: how he wanted to play, how he wanted to do things.
- 35:44Speaker 5: But the communication side of it with some of them
- 35:48Speaker 5: and putting that across, but he could still do it.
- 35:51Speaker 3: We're both feet it was.
- 35:54Speaker 5: It was class but Kenny was class as well.
- 35:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I always find that the best ones that I've
- 35:58Speaker 4: came across or something, the most humblest human beings, like
- 36:02Speaker 4: do you look at really you look you're going It's like, yeah,
- 36:06Speaker 4: them two boys. I remember sitting on the coach going.
- 36:09Speaker 4: I used to watch that as it was it Gazette
- 36:12Speaker 4: on the Saturday and then I'm going, I remember this
- 36:14Speaker 4: week like running Riot and palm Ohama, you know, and
- 36:17Speaker 4: like Vialley all superstars, superstars and when you spoke to them,
- 36:23Speaker 4: just you and don't yeah, like individuals and the song
- 36:27Speaker 4: great experience for me coming from a Rackon for to you.
- 36:30Speaker 5: Burley would have been in it as well. It was
- 36:34Speaker 5: rumored to be coming to Celtic. Remember that was when
- 36:37Speaker 5: we dr.
- 36:38Speaker 3: I nearly went a couple of times.
- 36:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I was my son Brad, I was doing my
- 36:44Speaker 4: missus was getting into hospital appointment doing in London and
- 36:49Speaker 4: came back out.
- 36:50Speaker 3: My mother Love was sitting there. She was like, Tommy
- 36:53Speaker 3: Bums has been on the form. Was it really?
- 36:57Speaker 4: She said you have to call him back. So I
- 36:58Speaker 4: phoned the number back and it was to be here.
- 37:00Speaker 4: I spoke to them and he's like would you come?
- 37:04Speaker 3: And I was like listen.
- 37:05Speaker 4: If it's you can get something older would be one
- 37:08Speaker 4: hundred percent okay coming, So I'm going to rewind back.
- 37:11Speaker 4: I was walking through glass weareport. One time Tommy was
- 37:14Speaker 4: under twenty one manager. Think Tommy took a couple of
- 37:15Speaker 4: games or twenty one's at one time.
- 37:17Speaker 2: I was run a bit of time and that I think.
- 37:20Speaker 4: We went to Copenhagen and we're walking through and I
- 37:26Speaker 4: checked in at the same time as him and said Hi.
- 37:29Speaker 4: Obviously I'd spoke to Hi when he was a command
- 37:30Speaker 4: that manager, give me a kit. That actually give me
- 37:32Speaker 4: a tip during the game. One time we were playing
- 37:34Speaker 4: four four two long ball. He has me turned and
- 37:37Speaker 4: running hate lya thinking on and then he's standing over
- 37:39Speaker 4: the ball, wasn't it Tommy Buns.
- 37:41Speaker 3: He was playing manager.
- 37:42Speaker 4: I think you're killing You can off a half timus
- 37:44Speaker 4: list and stopped turning your back and the ball, and
- 37:46Speaker 4: I was like, that's pretty cool, you know what I mean,
- 37:49Speaker 4: like oposing manager.
- 37:50Speaker 3: If I don't if I don't turn my back, I
- 37:52Speaker 3: collected in a score and I beat his team.
- 37:55Speaker 2: He talked the talk about humility, but partomise Tommy Bun.
- 38:00Speaker 4: Jimmy I grew up as I said, I grew up
- 38:01Speaker 4: like watching Celtic Point. They taught me bones and guys
- 38:04Speaker 4: deaby prove ands.
- 38:05Speaker 3: And you know, just like Charlie. Nickluss was one of
- 38:07Speaker 3: my heros. When I had hair, I had the long
- 38:10Speaker 3: hair with it permanent back and all that. So back.
- 38:13Speaker 4: He told me like walking through Glasgow Port and he
- 38:15Speaker 4: said to h to come with Celti part and I was,
- 38:19Speaker 4: I don't know if it's just a place because the
- 38:21Speaker 4: press for everywhere, and he goes, would you come, and
- 38:24Speaker 4: I said, of course I would.
- 38:25Speaker 3: I would love to come plan under you. You know.
- 38:27Speaker 4: I had a lot of a lot of respect for
- 38:28Speaker 4: him as a as a player. And then is what
- 38:30Speaker 4: he does a Silkie manager. And I think they bid,
- 38:36Speaker 4: they bid for me and Chelsea turned down the bid
- 38:39Speaker 4: say it wasn't enough. I think Hugh Kevans tells it
- 38:42Speaker 4: a be a bit differently. He said it was doctor Joe.
- 38:45Speaker 3: That was never the case. I'd never he he hanged.
- 38:47Speaker 4: He comes out and says something along like my rat
- 38:51Speaker 4: check John Spencer and ha ha ha that's how that goes.
- 38:53Speaker 4: And I'm going, sorry, you're gonna get a three different
- 38:55Speaker 4: times you got spat so I nearly went twice and
- 38:58Speaker 4: so it wasn't the doctor Joe Tak. I nearly went
- 39:01Speaker 4: under Tommy, and then Martin sent Steve Wolferd to watch
- 39:06Speaker 4: me playing for Mother Will, and I think Steve was
- 39:10Speaker 4: pushing for it, but they were looking for a wide
- 39:13Speaker 4: right ish and they end up signing, was it d
- 39:16Speaker 4: D a guard hat and you.
- 39:21Speaker 3: Actually run?
- 39:22Speaker 4: I could run for halfway ninety eighteen yard box. I
- 39:25Speaker 4: couldn't go box the box, the box, that's what you
- 39:28Speaker 4: were looking for.
- 39:28Speaker 5: Then I was find there was a say kind of striker.
- 39:31Speaker 5: But then since I was playing wing back at that
- 39:34Speaker 5: point and I get injured the way with Scotland and
- 39:37Speaker 5: San Marino, and then he tried day and the weekend
- 39:40Speaker 5: one at home and that was.
- 39:42Speaker 3: That flying ship. They liked his, you know, so I
- 39:46Speaker 3: can listen, I would that would have been maps.
- 39:49Speaker 1: Can you remember who was drinking when TV was looking
- 39:51Speaker 1: at you can remember who they was vanoid on and
- 39:53Speaker 1: that they're already did you been compete for them?
- 39:56Speaker 2: Can you mind that?
- 39:59Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 39:59Speaker 5: And maybe just because he was getting on your thoment
- 40:02Speaker 5: and then tom maybe what about.
- 40:04Speaker 3: That time, as I said, the conversation was had and
- 40:09Speaker 3: I enjoyed playing. You know, Tommy coach.
- 40:14Speaker 4: They played the why Tommy play. He was a cultured
- 40:16Speaker 4: midfield player. It's just a shame you look at guys
- 40:19Speaker 4: like him, Paul Miksteak. Imagine if he had then Paul Stay.
- 40:25Speaker 4: You know, they called him the Micero thirty five forty
- 40:28Speaker 4: years ago, you know, and you look now you're gone.
- 40:30Speaker 4: He's thirty five million, forty million pound midfield player, goalscoring
- 40:34Speaker 4: midfield you know, but before.
- 40:37Speaker 5: He had numbers a six ten midfielder when you're a midfielder, yeah,
- 40:44Speaker 5: I mean it's the same in today's football, Like what
- 40:47Speaker 5: would you class Lampard? Yeah, but he could do the
- 40:52Speaker 5: whole pits, you.
- 40:53Speaker 3: Know what I mean? It was a midfielder. I believe that.
- 40:56Speaker 4: Roy wasn't believe what I believe Lampard is the high
- 40:59Speaker 4: school scored on. Chelsea's history is exactly just incredible, mate,
- 41:04Speaker 4: you know, great finishing.
- 41:06Speaker 1: So you go to America, Yeah, and you're talking about
- 41:09Speaker 1: all these managers I had to deal with yourself as
- 41:12Speaker 1: a player.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Did you find the transition pretty simple gunto management?
- 41:18Speaker 4: What they're doing here coaching wise with players that were
- 41:22Speaker 4: then in America in two thousand and I'm talking about
- 41:26Speaker 4: man management.
- 41:28Speaker 3: It's advanced, different culture. Yeah, America was brought for me.
- 41:31Speaker 4: Like I remember pat Vincent that to making back and
- 41:34Speaker 4: I did something at Chelsea when he's like, we're doing
- 41:36Speaker 4: Chelsea TV and at halftime he.
- 41:37Speaker 3: Says, you really changed as a person.
- 41:41Speaker 4: I was like, you're so calm because me and him
- 41:45Speaker 4: putting together as the chief executive player chief exact.
- 41:48Speaker 3: I mean like so, I mean part was a very
- 41:52Speaker 3: kind of a it's the same spinning yeah, mean battle
- 41:55Speaker 3: jock and cheese.
- 41:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 41:56Speaker 3: Part was like.
- 41:59Speaker 4: I was like that the street Numpty you know in
- 42:01Speaker 4: part with came in like dressed in the paper under
- 42:05Speaker 4: his arm and I would freaking terrorized part and the
- 42:07Speaker 4: boys were going, why is the chief one?
- 42:11Speaker 3: When he stands in the dress?
- 42:14Speaker 5: You terrorized Alec Miller.
- 42:18Speaker 3: A terrorizing go on? You remember, I'm thinking it was
- 42:23Speaker 3: mot was your last trip might have been his last
- 42:26Speaker 3: trap was in Japan?
- 42:27Speaker 5: Did you know in Japan or I must I'm sure
- 42:29Speaker 5: it was Motor I'm sure it was one of your
- 42:31Speaker 5: last trips with Scotland. It might have been because of that, Yeah,
- 42:35Speaker 5: because Alex said big balls.
- 42:39Speaker 3: Can we talk about on your wife?
- 42:43Speaker 5: But He's like, no, you're looking there and he's going
- 42:45Speaker 5: fucking Health and Spain. He is like, fuck me, I
- 42:49Speaker 5: like you you're saying with everybody else in the dress
- 42:51Speaker 5: room was saying fuck me, Alex says, your boss on
- 42:54Speaker 5: a fucking space.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Hop played the doctor Fount. He pleaded, he took it.
- 43:03Speaker 5: He's like driving you s funk off.
- 43:07Speaker 3: That's why he probably because it was rattling against his appreciates.
- 43:10Speaker 2: It was more than that was his last cat.
- 43:14Speaker 3: I always remember like we went to Japan. I felt terrible.
- 43:17Speaker 3: Paul Lambert, man, he had these We went to Japan's.
- 43:19Speaker 4: An under twenty three strip before the it was his
- 43:23Speaker 4: summer before the Euros. I'm sure it was the summer
- 43:25Speaker 4: before the Euros. Paul Lambert obviously, I think he just
- 43:28Speaker 4: won the Champions Champions League. So Paul get brought in
- 43:32Speaker 4: and it was like a mixture and we're going to
- 43:34Speaker 4: play against Japan. I never forget it, me and Don
- 43:37Speaker 4: Jackson not playing it. From the game's going on register.
- 43:41Speaker 4: It was a weird game and stadium Royce was brilliant,
- 43:44Speaker 4: great atmosphere and Jacko and this big boys playing against
- 43:47Speaker 4: Jacko and he's smashing jack a little over the gaff
- 43:50Speaker 4: and Jack's lad to meet one.
- 43:51Speaker 3: He said, pieces to swamp men. This guy's kicking the
- 43:55Speaker 3: shot at me, and I was like, I'm all right.
- 43:57Speaker 3: He goes that, please be when please what? So like,
- 44:00Speaker 3: all right, I'm fuck got a smart ass here.
- 44:02Speaker 4: So Ball goes to the right back and I let
- 44:05Speaker 4: him come across and bogs down the channel. So as
- 44:08Speaker 4: he comes across a slow doing told him right.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Up the ass, and I thought, I've done him. He's
- 44:15Speaker 3: not going to come back. I turn round red card. Ah,
- 44:20Speaker 3: I can't. Hell, man, that's part of Euros. I'm done.
- 44:22Speaker 4: I'm getting the Euros year. And I walked past JACKO.
- 44:25Speaker 4: Jack was like, like, you know, man, you're lucky there,
- 44:27Speaker 4: weren't you. I was thinking you should be you. I
- 44:31Speaker 4: get the addressing him and I hear the door open
- 44:33Speaker 4: for like three minutes later, Paul Lambert comes in and goes, fun,
- 44:36Speaker 4: did you get red grabbed me as well? He goes, no,
- 44:39Speaker 4: they took me after you get right to make a defense.
- 44:43Speaker 4: And it was his debut for the NOD. Listen, that's
- 44:50Speaker 4: the trial and tribulations in the game, and there's things
- 44:52Speaker 4: that It's one of the things if you could wind back,
- 44:54Speaker 4: you would tell me.
- 44:55Speaker 3: Have you any regrets? And then you would change. Do
- 44:59Speaker 3: you know what I said?
- 44:59Speaker 4: I saw tell him I'm going to I've been on
- 45:01Speaker 4: that radio clade and they talk about you know, I
- 45:04Speaker 4: get battered than these quizzies for you twenty years ago
- 45:07Speaker 4: and all that stuff, and I'm looking on gone.
- 45:09Speaker 3: I don't look back away. You know.
- 45:11Speaker 4: I'm kind of an a type of guide it. As
- 45:13Speaker 4: I said, I don't know these because I don't like
- 45:15Speaker 4: talking about myself. I have a laugh of a joke,
- 45:17Speaker 4: but I get mere joy seeing my boy playing at
- 45:20Speaker 4: Foker and know what they've done for League one out
- 45:22Speaker 4: of the prem has journey. I love going to watch. No,
- 45:26Speaker 4: I'm not that dad that's trying to live like through
- 45:29Speaker 4: his career. I've done that myself, so I go there
- 45:32Speaker 4: just as a fan and enjoy. So for me, I
- 45:35Speaker 4: look back and they're gone. That's what I say to
- 45:37Speaker 4: your boo when they spoke about music and stuff. It's
