- 0:13Welcome back to Crusade with me. Our world moves
- 0:20quickly. Our minds rarely rest. We consume more
- 0:28information than any generation before us and
- 0:31yet many of us struggle to find wisdom. So for
- 0:38the next... not an hour, but... It might be an
- 0:42hour, not today. Let's slow down. Let's pay attention.
- 0:48Let's ask better questions. And together, let's
- 0:54listen for the voice that has been speaking since
- 1:00the beginning. You know, we're getting ready
- 1:16to start a series. Haven't done a series since
- 1:20we brought back Crusade with me, but I think
- 1:24it's time. The title of the series is gonna be
- 1:32called Attention. I haven't even figured out
- 1:35all the episodes, but it looks like it's gonna
- 1:37be about six episodes, maybe more. Focusing on
- 1:43Attention, and today, Title of this episode is
- 1:50There has to be more to this You know everyone
- 1:57has said it It doesn't matter who you are in
- 2:03this life, I mean the wealthy have said that
- 2:05there has to be more than this The addict has
- 2:11said it Teenagers have said it. The retiree has
- 2:22said it. The CEO has said it. The single mom
- 2:30has said it. The atheist has said that. And Christians
- 2:39have said that. Everyone. Why is that? I mean,
- 2:50I think we can all say we've had that moment,
- 2:54have we not? You know, when you finally accomplish
- 3:00something that you've worked for for years or
- 3:05thought about or planned, you know, you buy the
- 3:11truck or you buy the gun or you buy the you buy
- 3:14the whatever or You finally get that promotion.
- 3:23You finally take that vacation. You know, you
- 3:30raise your kids and you and your spouse sit there
- 3:33and you look at each other. Or you finally retire.
- 3:43And somewhere in the quiet, A question sneaks
- 3:50into our minds. Is this it? It's not because
- 4:02life is bad necessarily, but because there's
- 4:08something within us or something inside that
- 4:15whispers There has to be more to this Last episode
- 4:29we looked at Romans chapter 8 And Paul had written
- 4:35there that I want to remind you of that This
- 4:41is what led to this series Romans chapter 8 When
- 4:47Paul writes that creation groans, we groan, the
- 5:00world groans for more. So then that makes me
- 5:12wonder. Where does that feeling come from? You
- 5:26know, evolution can't really explain it. And
- 5:32materialism can't satisfy it. Consumerism absolutely
- 5:43exploits it. advertising depends on it politicians
- 5:53promise to fix it pornography counterfeits it
- 6:03success distracts from it and technology and
- 6:17it synthesizes it. One of my favorite books of
- 6:22the Bible is the book of Ecclesiastes, written
- 6:29by Solomon, professed to be the wisest man that
- 6:35ever lived. In chapter 3 verse 11, Solomon writes,
- 6:46He has set eternity in our hearts. You know,
- 7:01I've spent nearly 40 years in manufacturing.
- 7:11And I've learned over the years, you know what?
- 7:14A good operator is a person that operates a line
- 7:20or operates a machine every day. And when he
- 7:24hears a strange sound, he knows that's different.
- 7:30That's not noise. It's a sound. And then he reports
- 7:36it or he investigates it himself. You know, we
- 7:41could simply kind of turn up the radio, right?
- 7:49Nah, it's just noise. Until we have a catastrophic
- 7:54failure. Because if we can stop and investigate
- 7:58and say, hey, this thing's just not getting enough
- 8:00lubrication, we can either one, fix it so it
- 8:04gets the proper lubrication, or we can manually
- 8:06lubricate it just to get it by till we have more
- 8:09time and schedule the fix. But stopping to investigate
- 8:21is kind of important. Because noise is telling
- 8:29us something. And I think that that longing inside
- 8:38of each one of us is noise. And it deserves to
- 8:47be investigated. So what do we do instead of
- 8:55investigating the noise that we sometimes hear?
- 9:00Scroll, or we go buy things that we think we
- 9:05want or need. Got to double down on my career,
- 9:11got to make that happen. Sometimes I just get
- 9:17a big old jar of peanut butter and a spoon and
- 9:20just eat. Sometimes drink just coffee today.
- 9:35Sometimes people drink stuff much harder so they
- 9:40can not hear the noise. Sometimes we dive into
- 9:46politics and we say, Oh, we've got to, we've
- 9:49got to join this movement to drown out that noise.
- 9:57Sometimes people turn to pornography. Sometimes
- 10:04people turn to any type of achievement. They
- 10:08look at what I have achieved. Then we can do
- 10:15more scrolling for more noise. You know, maybe
- 10:45the feeling that whisper, that there has to be
- 10:51more than this, it isn't depression. It isn't
- 10:57weakness. It isn't failure. Maybe it's the sound
- 11:05of a heart that remembers that it was made for
- 11:11more. You know, every civilization I've ever
- 11:19studied tried to explain the groaning that Paul
- 11:25wrote about in Romans 8. You know, evolution
- 11:35can describe survival, but it can't explain longing.
- 11:47Materialism can measure matter, but it can't
- 11:53measure hope. Consumerism profits from our dissatisfaction,
- 12:08and technology distracts us from it. Politics
- 12:14promises to fix it. What if your attention has
- 12:25been captured by everything except the one thing
- 12:30trying to get your attention? And that's what
- 12:36I want to talk about for the next several weeks.
- 12:39That's what we need to investigate. I want to
- 12:43be clear, not because I have any answers. but
- 12:50because I've spent the last 60 years discovering
- 12:53that the deepest questions are worth asking slowly.
- 13:03So maybe the question isn't, is there more than
- 13:08this? Maybe every one of us already knows there
- 13:14is. Maybe the better question is, what is the
- 13:24more trying to point us toward? The noise is
- 13:36real. Don't silence it. So stay with us. And
- 13:47together let's investigate what it's trying to
- 13:50tell us.
