- 0:21Speaker 1: What's up, everybody who are listening to Eagles postgame analysis
- 0:24Speaker 1: here at the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:27Speaker 1: running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world, over
- 0:30Speaker 1: eleven and a half year strong. Philadelphia Eagles beat the
- 0:34Speaker 1: Jacksonville Jaguars. Amazingly enough, they beat the Jacksonville Jaguars by
- 0:39Speaker 1: a score of twenty eight to twenty three down at
- 0:42Speaker 1: the link here in week nine, My goodness, what a game.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I said right before we hit the record button that
- 0:49Speaker 1: we should not have had this much anxiety during the
- 0:54Speaker 1: course of this game. First half great, second half not
- 0:58Speaker 1: so great. We're gonna get into it. Jeff Warren, you're
- 1:01Speaker 1: a good buddy from Philadelphia. Soccernow dot com can follow
- 1:05Speaker 1: him on the Twitter slash x at Flag Guy Josh
- 1:08Speaker 1: ninety one, Josh Schuster, how you doing, man, I'm just
- 1:12Speaker 1: we shouldn't have been feeling like this. This is the
- 1:14Speaker 1: Jacksonville Jaguars. We should have been feeling like this.
- 1:18Speaker 2: So, Jeff. On Friday, I sliced my finger open.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Oh man, I'm sure it.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Acquired six stitches. Yeah, and I think that in getting
- 1:29Speaker 2: stitches was more enjoyable than watching whatever next Sirianni decides,
- 1:34Speaker 2: I've always said blowout wins, they're just stupid who actually
- 1:39Speaker 2: enjoys being able to watch fun football for four straight quarters?
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yeah, oh boy, I'm telling you, I don't look the
- 1:49Speaker 1: Eagles right now at this point. They are six and two,
- 1:53Speaker 1: they have a great record, they're quote one of the
- 1:55Speaker 1: top teams in the NFC. We can certainly get into
- 1:58Speaker 1: that in a little bit as to whether or not
- 2:00Speaker 1: that is reality or if that's just the record saying
- 2:04Speaker 1: that they are. But man, Nick Sirianni costing his team
- 2:09Speaker 1: what should have been a quote easy win with about
- 2:12Speaker 1: a dozen questionable decisions today on fourth downs, various conversions. Uh,
- 2:18Speaker 1: you've got what second and twenty and you bring an
- 2:21Speaker 1: eye Smith out on some sort of flanker thing or
- 2:25Speaker 1: whatever the he whatever? That that play was just he levet,
- 2:29Speaker 1: What do you leave six points on the field? Right?
- 2:31Speaker 1: He left six points on the field. Jags have one
- 2:33Speaker 1: of the worst defenses in the NFL. This was a
- 2:37Speaker 1: poor game drawn up by Nick Sirianni. Kellen Moore as well,
- 2:41Speaker 1: I'm not gonna let him off the hook. He's part
- 2:42Speaker 1: of this offensive scheming. I I it. Even though they
- 2:47Speaker 1: won this stuff needs to be said, Josh, it needs
- 2:49Speaker 1: to be said.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah, so I'm gonna disagree a little bit here with
- 2:54Speaker 2: what you said. Really, you know, I'm I'm gonna let
- 2:59Speaker 2: Kellen Moore off the hook. I mean to me, I
- 3:02Speaker 2: think both coordinators have really come into their own.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Ok.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Sure, there's gonna be some play calls that I
- 3:09Speaker 2: don't like or don't agree with. But if like, I'm
- 3:11Speaker 2: looking at the box score right now and I'm seeing
- 3:14Speaker 2: that they ran the ball forty times today, Yes, against
- 3:17Speaker 2: the team that can't stop the run. Like, I can't
- 3:19Speaker 2: ask them to do more than that. Once again, we're
- 3:23Speaker 2: looking at Jalen Hurts only throwing the ball twenty times.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And you know what when you ask Hurts to only
- 3:28Speaker 2: throw the ball twenty ish times, guess what. Yeah, he's
- 3:31Speaker 2: a pretty good quarterback. Yes, so I there were create
- 3:35Speaker 2: creative plays. There were a lot of motion right Hurts
- 3:41Speaker 2: was under center, Like the stuff that we've been calling
- 3:44Speaker 2: for Kellen Moore to do. He's done and I can't
- 3:48Speaker 2: ask him to do anymore.
- 3:49Speaker 1: You make a great point, you make a great point.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I should, I should, I should, I will revise, I
- 3:53Speaker 1: will revise. And my remarks from earlier for sure.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Yes, I just need Nick to get out of his way. Yeah,
- 4:02Speaker 2: I mean he is the just epitome almost weekly of
- 4:08Speaker 2: shooting yourself in the foot y, except he's shooting his
- 4:11Speaker 2: coordinators in the foot while they're trying to do things successfully.
- 4:16Speaker 1: We have said a number of times on this these
- 4:18Speaker 1: postgame podcast shows this particular year that exactly what you
- 4:22Speaker 1: were saying, Josh, And this team is winning in spite
- 4:26Speaker 1: of Nick Sirianni. How many times have we seen that
- 4:29Speaker 1: thus far this year?
- 4:30Speaker 3: But again, at the end of the day, team of
- 4:32Speaker 3: six and two, they're at the top of the NFC here,
- 4:35Speaker 3: they're at one of the top NFC teams. He's not
- 4:38Speaker 3: going anywhere anytime soon, folks. So look, Jalen Hurts. You
- 4:43Speaker 3: mentioned him eighteen of twenty four on the day, two
- 4:46Speaker 3: hundred and thirty yards. He averaged nine point six yards
- 4:49Speaker 3: per attempt, two touchdowns with one hundred and thirty two
- 4:52Speaker 3: point three rating today. And I'll tell you what though,
- 4:57Speaker 3: even though those numbers look pretty fantastic and there was
- 5:00Speaker 3: a lot of fantastic play by Jalen Hurts today, those
- 5:03Speaker 3: six incompletions were horrendous and I want to put that
- 5:08Speaker 3: out there too, And I'm not sure how my grades
- 5:10Speaker 3: are going to go for the quarterback position.
- 5:12Speaker 1: To be honest with you, I don't know because those
- 5:15Speaker 1: six incompletions were horrible. They and if Saquon Barkley is
- 5:21Speaker 1: not on this team doing what he is consistently doing,
- 5:25Speaker 1: twenty seven carries, one hundred and fifty nine yards five
- 5:27Speaker 1: point nine yards per carry a touchdown. His long was
- 5:30Speaker 1: twenty one yards. He had the best fourteen yard run
- 5:34Speaker 1: I have ever seen from a running back in my life,
- 5:36Speaker 1: where he is spinning and then does a backward a
- 5:41Speaker 1: backward hurdle that I have never seen anybody do as
- 5:45Speaker 1: long as I have been watching the game of football,
- 5:47Speaker 1: which has been well over forty years at this point, Josh,
- 5:50Speaker 1: thank god for Saquon Barkley. And yes, that fumble that
- 5:54Speaker 1: and maybe we can talk about that too. The fumble.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I thought the defender actually got his hand on his
- 6:00Speaker 1: ankle or calf, which would have actually been him being down.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I don't know, what did you think? I thought that
- 6:08Speaker 1: the refs uh fumbled the fumble, Caul, That's how I thought.
- 6:12Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 6:14Speaker 2: So this is where I'm at with it. I know
- 6:16Speaker 2: you're a Penn State fan, so I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 6:20Speaker 2: work this in here. It bothers me to no end
- 6:24Speaker 2: and really pisses me off when I hear people say
- 6:27Speaker 2: that the refs are in such and such team's pocket,
- 6:30Speaker 2: or the refs cost us the game. No like, and
- 6:34Speaker 2: that's there will be wrong calls, right that you are
- 6:38Speaker 2: having humans who are prone to making wrong decisions. They're
- 6:44Speaker 2: doing the best they possibly can with athletes that are
- 6:47Speaker 2: ginormous and have super speed, right, and they have to
- 6:50Speaker 2: make these calls, and sometimes you don't get the best
- 6:53Speaker 2: angles with things. I heard in the Penn State game
- 6:57Speaker 2: yesterday and what I heard today was oh, are going
- 7:00Speaker 2: to cost us this? No? No, The refs did not
- 7:03Speaker 2: have anything to do with kicking that ridiculously long field goal.
- 7:06Speaker 2: They had nothing to do with Saquon Barkley going down
- 7:09Speaker 2: before the first down marker. They had nothing to do
- 7:12Speaker 2: with Avante Maddox making a very stupid play where he
- 7:16Speaker 2: got the defensive pass interference. I don't want to hear
- 7:19Speaker 2: that wasn't P I.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Guess what it was.
- 7:20Speaker 2: By definition, that is PI cannot like a rule, yes,
- 7:25Speaker 2: but you can't in the fourth quarter do something that
- 7:29Speaker 2: is that close. So my take on it, Jeff is
- 7:32Speaker 2: the Eagles still won the game. It didn't cost him.
- 7:35Speaker 2: It is what it is, and I'm not going to
- 7:37Speaker 2: dwell on it. And if they lost this game, I
- 7:39Speaker 2: wouldn't dwell on it because it's the officials, hear me, please,
- 7:44Speaker 2: The officials will never cost you a game. Right, There's fumbles,
- 7:49Speaker 2: there's turnovers. You're not perfect on everything. So guess what.
- 7:52Speaker 2: The officials will never cost you a game.
- 7:55Speaker 1: All right, you know what I will get. I'll give
- 7:57Speaker 1: it to you. I'll give you that. I don't know.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Maybe I'm just happy they won this thing. For God's sake.
- 8:02Speaker 1: This Jaguars team is a horrible team. Doug Peterson maybe
- 8:06Speaker 1: getting fired after this. But let's talk about the defense,
- 8:09Speaker 1: if you don't mind. Let's move over to that side
- 8:11Speaker 1: of the ball here. Because the Jags had zero trips
- 8:15Speaker 1: to the red zone, they only had one first down,
- 8:17Speaker 1: they had two turnovers, one of them on special teams,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and they were limited to one point seven yards per
- 8:23Speaker 1: play in the first half. A dominant performance by the
- 8:27Speaker 1: defense in the first half, and then we have a
- 8:29Speaker 1: tale of two halves giving up some plays during the
- 8:33Speaker 1: course of the second half. I mean, in the first half,
- 8:37Speaker 1: let me go back to that, only thirty six total
- 8:39Speaker 1: yards by the Jaguars offense. That is domination right there
- 8:43Speaker 1: by definition. But man, at the end of the day,
- 8:47Speaker 1: the Jaguars actually ended up having one hundred and fifty
- 8:52Speaker 1: five yards passing on the day. Their total yards were
- 8:56Speaker 1: two hundred and fifteen. So you take two hundred and
- 8:59Speaker 1: fifteen thirty six from the first half, and that's how
- 9:02Speaker 1: many yards were given up in the second half by
- 9:04Speaker 1: the defense. And look, the defense played extremely well today,
- 9:08Speaker 1: and they're gonna get some really good grades. Some of
- 9:10Speaker 1: these units are going to get some really good grades
- 9:12Speaker 1: for me. Some are not. But I give a lot
- 9:16Speaker 1: of credit to Vic Fangio and how in the second
- 9:19Speaker 1: half it was a bend but don't break type of defense.
- 9:22Speaker 1: We saw that, and the linebackers were fantastic. They were
- 9:27Speaker 1: so incredibly fantastic in this game to Kobe Dean Zach Bond,
- 9:31Speaker 1: two guys that I just never thought we'd see this
- 9:34Speaker 1: type of play from them. We're just finishing up Week
- 9:36Speaker 1: nine here, but I think the defense they're gonna get
- 9:39Speaker 1: some decent grades from me later on. What are your
- 9:41Speaker 1: thoughts here, Josh.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not upset with the defense in the second
- 9:47Speaker 2: half because I think this is again Nick Sirianni. I mean,
- 9:50Speaker 2: there were decisions Nick Sirianni made that made the defense
- 9:54Speaker 2: be on the field a more than they needed to, Yeah,
- 9:58Speaker 2: and be quicker than they needed to. So any team
- 10:01Speaker 2: is going to get tired and exhausted. To me, and
- 10:05Speaker 2: we text about this, there was no prevent defense. It
- 10:10Speaker 2: was so refreshing. Yeah, to watch the fourth quarter of
- 10:13Speaker 2: a close game and Vic Fangio is bringing pressure. Yeah, right,
- 10:17Speaker 2: Like and I had said to me, this is a
- 10:19Speaker 2: sign that Vic Fangio is trusting the young defensive backs.
- 10:24Speaker 2: So you know, maybe there was more openings and different
- 10:27Speaker 2: things like that because of that. But how often have
- 10:30Speaker 2: you and I gotten on here talking about how we
- 10:33Speaker 2: hate the prevent defense. I'm not going to penalize the
- 10:35Speaker 2: same coaching staff for making the changes and not doing that.
- 10:39Speaker 2: I just think the head coach shot his defensive coordinator
- 10:43Speaker 2: and the entire defense in the foot.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, Look, I was talking about the linebackers as well,
- 10:50Speaker 1: and I just want to and not that not that
- 10:53Speaker 1: this is just because of the linebackers, but I think
- 10:55Speaker 1: if you take if you take a pie graph and
- 10:58Speaker 1: you look at in terms of defenses and how they're
- 11:02Speaker 1: or this defense and how they're defending against tight ends,
- 11:06Speaker 1: that a lot of that does come down to the linebackers.
- 11:08Speaker 1: This Eagles defense, Josh doing such a better job against
- 11:13Speaker 1: opposing tight ends this season, more than they have in
- 11:16Speaker 1: previous years. Coming into this game against the Jaguars, they
- 11:20Speaker 1: hadn't given up a touchdown to a tight end, and
- 11:24Speaker 1: they've held tight ends this year to seven point nine
- 11:27Speaker 1: yards per catch. That is so much better, believe it
- 11:30Speaker 1: or not, that we have seen in previous years. So
- 11:35Speaker 1: I gotta give a shout out again to the linebackers
- 11:38Speaker 1: and just to the defense in general to tight ends consistently,
- 11:42Speaker 1: year after year, the opposing tight ends have just sliced
- 11:45Speaker 1: and diced them. It's not happening this year. And the
- 11:48Speaker 1: fact that they haven't given up a tight end a
- 11:50Speaker 1: touchdown to a tight end really says something about this
- 11:53Speaker 1: team and this defense.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Absolutely, And I think part of it is this is
- 11:58Speaker 2: what happens when you have a defense of coordinator who
- 12:01Speaker 2: knows what they're doing. Yeah, you know, it's just like
- 12:03Speaker 2: when you get a new boss. Sometimes there's people that
- 12:06Speaker 2: just begin to shine because they're putting in a better
- 12:09Speaker 2: situation or they're only asked to do things that they're
- 12:12Speaker 2: strong at. And that's really what Vic Fangio has done.
- 12:15Speaker 2: You know, we've we've mentioned you know, why is it
- 12:17Speaker 2: Ni Kobe Demon Dean out on the field, what's up
- 12:19Speaker 2: with Jalen Carr? All these questions that we've had, and
- 12:23Speaker 2: they've been answered this year by Vic Fangio. It was
- 12:25Speaker 2: a little bumpy in the beginning. Yeah, you know what,
- 12:28Speaker 2: he figured it out.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Yep, absolutely he did. Uh, let's go back to the
- 12:32Speaker 1: offense for a second too, because I forgot to mention
- 12:35Speaker 1: this and I actually told you, I texted you, I said,
- 12:37Speaker 1: we're got we got to get into this on the
- 12:39Speaker 1: postgame show. And it is the tush push. And I
- 12:43Speaker 1: feel like we may be having a similar conversation that
- 12:45Speaker 1: we had last week on the postgame pod. But the
- 12:49Speaker 1: tush push here twice in this game, failing on two
- 12:55Speaker 1: point conversions. They tried to use it, one before the half,
- 12:58Speaker 1: one in the third quarter. Back to what we were
- 13:00Speaker 1: talking about last week, Josh, teams are figuring out this
- 13:04Speaker 1: push push and it is not automatic anymore. It certainly
- 13:07Speaker 1: wasn't in this game, lots of points being left on
- 13:10Speaker 1: the field by Nick Sirianni wanting to use it. And
- 13:13Speaker 1: that's stubbornness, dude, that I think that's probably why I'm
- 13:16Speaker 1: so pissed off at this point with regard to Nick Sirianni,
- 13:19Speaker 1: that stubbornness of thinking that yes, I don't care, I'm
- 13:22Speaker 1: gonna do this hasn't been working. I've been making questionable calls.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Those questionable calls have not been going my way. But
- 13:28Speaker 1: he was still sticking with it, still sticking with it,
- 13:31Speaker 1: and it's just not working the way that it used to.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Teams are figuring this out. It is a problem, and
- 13:37Speaker 1: it I think is going to be a problem as
- 13:39Speaker 1: this season continues to move on.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I really do, Josh, Yeah, I agree, you know, I mean,
- 13:45Speaker 2: I don't. The Solid Verbal podcast has a phrase where
- 13:50Speaker 2: they say, you gotta win your clunkers, right, And we
- 13:54Speaker 2: heard at the beginning of the season from Cowboys fans
- 13:57Speaker 2: that the Falcons weren't really a good team and so
- 14:00Speaker 2: that win didn't really count for anything. Well, Cowboys lost today.
- 14:03Speaker 2: In fact, after Dak and Lamb went out, the game
- 14:06Speaker 2: was closer than when they were playing. Yeah, so like
- 14:10Speaker 2: you got to win your clunkers, and you got to
- 14:13Speaker 2: play the team that's on the schedule that week. And
- 14:17Speaker 2: records a lot of times don't mean a whole lot.
- 14:19Speaker 2: We've seen it this year where teams that are bad
- 14:23Speaker 2: last week, right the Browns, and then this week the
- 14:26Speaker 2: Browns look absolutely horrible. Right. So it depends week to week.
- 14:32Speaker 1: But one of the.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Things that this again comes down to his coaching and
- 14:36Speaker 2: I'm not gonna steer away from this. This is a
- 14:38Speaker 2: head coaching decision. And Merrill mentioned it on the radio
- 14:42Speaker 2: today that this is automatic and when he said that,
- 14:45Speaker 2: I don't really disagree often with Meryl Reese. Yeah, but
- 14:48Speaker 2: I was like, you aren't watching the same thing I'm
- 14:50Speaker 2: watching this year because it wasn't successful. Today teams have
- 14:55Speaker 2: definitely figured it out and it's really time to start
- 14:58Speaker 2: putting in some different wrinkles to it. It seems to
- 15:02Speaker 2: be whenever they do try a wrinkle, they get a penalty,
- 15:05Speaker 2: so it eliminates it. And now they've shown what that
- 15:08Speaker 2: wrinkle is.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Going to be.
- 15:09Speaker 2: So just across the board, it's not it's not working. Yeah,
- 15:14Speaker 2: I don't think this is a Kelsey situation, right, like
- 15:18Speaker 2: other teams can sometimes run it well, and they can't
- 15:21Speaker 2: as well, even on the college level. Yep, it's just
- 15:23Speaker 2: I think teams are prepared for it now.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I think that's a really good point. I mean there's
- 15:28Speaker 1: a lot of film on it out there for sure,
- 15:30Speaker 1: and yes, the personnel that they've always had you mentioned
- 15:33Speaker 1: Jason Kelcey not being there. I don't necessarily know if
- 15:37Speaker 1: it's that. I just think you start, you start running
- 15:40Speaker 1: certain plays, you start running certain offensive schemes, you start
- 15:43Speaker 1: running certain defensive schemes. The league figures things out over time.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Did people think that the tush push was not going
- 15:50Speaker 1: to get figured out after five, six, seven years? Of
- 15:53Speaker 1: course it's going to get figured out. We're starting to
- 15:55Speaker 1: see it right now. It needs to be more of
- 15:56Speaker 1: a conversation from a honestly, I think from a more
- 16:00Speaker 1: national perspective, and even within the Philly sports market, fourth
- 16:04Speaker 1: largest sports market in the United States, I think it
- 16:07Speaker 1: needs to be talked about a lot more. But I
- 16:11Speaker 1: guess just an offshoot really quick, before we head to
- 16:14Speaker 1: our break or any other themes you have. Eagles ended
- 16:17Speaker 1: up scoring in the first quarter for the first time
- 16:19Speaker 1: this season. What was a nine game ten games? Nine
- 16:22Speaker 1: ten games something like that? Where they hadn't scored, they
- 16:25Speaker 1: finally scored in the first quarter. And I want to
- 16:27Speaker 1: put this out there too as one of my last
- 16:29Speaker 1: statements before we had to break. It was just so bizarre,
- 16:33Speaker 1: and I know what's happened before, but so bizarre seeing
- 16:36Speaker 1: Doug Peterson on the sideline and the fact that Doug
- 16:38Speaker 1: Peterson was coaching against a team that has a statue
- 16:41Speaker 1: of him outside the stadium. I don't care what anybody says.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I'm always gonna love Doug Peterson. I don't care even
- 16:46Speaker 1: if he's fired this week by the Jags. I will
- 16:49Speaker 1: always love him forever, endeavor.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Well and rightfully. So yeah, I mean has helped win
- 16:56Speaker 2: the first few Super Bowl in franchise history. Really, the
- 16:59Speaker 2: last and I have is that the Eagles really have
- 17:02Speaker 2: a head coaching problem. Yeah uh, And I mean that
- 17:06Speaker 2: not just in the way Nick Sirianni coaches. What I
- 17:09Speaker 2: mean is if they keep winning, they're not going to
- 17:13Speaker 2: be able to let him go, right Like, there was
- 17:15Speaker 2: already talk around the league that it didn't go over
- 17:18Speaker 2: well that they fired Doug Peterson. So I'm now getting
- 17:23Speaker 2: to the point where I'm like, Okay, guys, if you
- 17:27Speaker 2: really want you know, to really move forward, you gotta
- 17:32Speaker 2: slow down, like tossing an L once or twice here,
- 17:35Speaker 2: because this is it's getting to the point where Nick
- 17:38Speaker 2: Siriani's job is gonna be safe no matter what.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Was on the board. Though that's the problem. But that's
- 17:45Speaker 1: what we want, you know what I mean. It's the
- 17:48Speaker 1: weirdest dichotomy in the world. Here we want we want
- 17:52Speaker 1: the wins. The front office wants the wins too, but
- 17:56Speaker 1: it's it's it's it's a no, it is a known
- 18:00Speaker 1: even though they do. Yeah.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it's really creating this interesting dynamic. I do wonder
- 18:08Speaker 2: if we start having more games like the one today
- 18:11Speaker 2: where it is obvious that this head coach is actively
- 18:15Speaker 2: hurting not just the coaching staff but the players. I
- 18:19Speaker 2: wonder if that love that they have for Nick Sirianni
- 18:22Speaker 2: is gonna start to fade.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not too often in this league that you
- 18:26Speaker 1: see winning coaches getting let go owner by team front
- 18:31Speaker 1: offices or ownership. You very rarely ever see anything like that.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Wonder if the Eagles could be a first with that.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Who knows, you never know any other themes, buddy, Before
- 18:41Speaker 1: we head to break and then get into our grades.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Win's a win. I guess there you go.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Win's a win. They are now six and two on
- 18:50Speaker 1: the season here. Man, it's an interesting six and two
- 18:54Speaker 1: for sure. All Right, folks, we're gonna take a break.
- 18:56Speaker 1: We're gonna be right back with our grades. Stick with us,
- 19:00Speaker 1: all right. We are back again with my good buddy
- 19:03Speaker 1: Josh Schuster from philadelphiasoccernow dot com. Loves covering the Union
- 19:08Speaker 1: there and loves doing some Eagles analysis with us on
- 19:11Speaker 1: our postgame shows every now and again. Let's get into
- 19:15Speaker 1: our grades. Jalen Hurts I ran over the stats earlier,
- 19:18Speaker 1: or I should say ran through the stats earlier. Even
- 19:22Speaker 1: though eighteen to twenty four on the day and for
- 19:25Speaker 1: the most part played pretty well, I'm actually gonna give
- 19:28Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts a C plus this week. The stats say otherwise,
- 19:33Speaker 1: The stats probably say he played an AA minus type
- 19:37Speaker 1: of game, maybe even an A plus game C plus
- 19:40Speaker 1: for me. Like I mentioned earlier, those six incompletions were
- 19:44Speaker 1: horrendous and time and time again, as we have talked
- 19:47Speaker 1: about on these postgame shows and on our regular shows,
- 19:51Speaker 1: hearts is holding onto the ball too long, not reading
- 19:54Speaker 1: the zone coverage well at all. He is not getting
- 19:57Speaker 1: through it today for whatever reason, not getting through his
- 19:59Speaker 1: per aggressions at all at all, and just feeling like
- 20:06Speaker 1: he needed to somehow be back to some sort of
- 20:08Speaker 1: a vanilla shotgun drop back mainly in the first half.
- 20:13Speaker 1: We did see him under center a lot more during
- 20:16Speaker 1: the second half, and I think he does thrive there
- 20:19Speaker 1: quite frankly. But I'm gonna give Jalen Hurts a C
- 20:21Speaker 1: plus this week. Man, what do you give him?
- 20:23Speaker 2: Yeah, this is where we're gonna differ. I'm giving him
- 20:26Speaker 2: an A okay, And I think a lot of it
- 20:27Speaker 2: boils down to what I talked about last week. I
- 20:30Speaker 2: judge Hurts based off of his contract and where it ranks. Yeah, right,
- 20:34Speaker 2: And so I see two quarterbacks. You know who's the
- 20:37Speaker 2: higher paid quarterback, Trevor Lawrence. He is, right. So Jalen
- 20:41Speaker 2: Hurts has a contract that puts him at the middle
- 20:44Speaker 2: third of the league. You know what, he played well
- 20:47Speaker 2: above a middle third quarterback. And that's all I can ask.
- 20:49Speaker 2: He let his receivers make plays. I don't need perfect
- 20:54Speaker 2: passes every time. Just get the ball within the catch radius.
- 20:57Speaker 2: That's it, and don't turn the ball upright. And the
- 21:01Speaker 2: one fourth down one where he held onto it forever.
- 21:04Speaker 2: I'm putting that on the coach like.
- 21:06Speaker 1: It was a terrible play. Don't need to go.
- 21:09Speaker 2: You don't even need to go for it on fourth
- 21:11Speaker 2: down there, Yeah, there was no reason. Your defense is
- 21:14Speaker 2: playing well, you are up by multiple scores. Do not
- 21:19Speaker 2: go for it on fourth down.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Very true, very true, very true. And it was a
- 21:24Speaker 1: terrible play call as well. It was a terrible Seriously,
- 21:28Speaker 1: two seconds into the play, he's running for his life.
- 21:30Speaker 1: You can't go through your progressions if you're running through
- 21:33Speaker 1: your for your life.
- 21:34Speaker 2: And uh oh, and they have Saquon Barkley, who averaged
- 21:38Speaker 2: six yards to carry today. Yeah, let's let's go ahead
- 21:42Speaker 2: and throw.
- 21:42Speaker 1: It exactly well, speaking of Saquon the running back Saquon Barkley,
- 21:46Speaker 1: Kenny Gainwell. Uh I mentioned his stats earlier. Kenny Gainwell
- 21:51Speaker 1: had five carries for nine yards, did a whole lot
- 21:53Speaker 1: of nothing, one point eight yards per carry. His long
- 21:57Speaker 1: was three, His long was three. So regardless of that,
- 22:01Speaker 1: I am gonna be giving this running back group because
- 22:04Speaker 1: of Saquon Barkley an A plus this week. One hundred
- 22:07Speaker 1: and fifty nine total yards on the day on twenty
- 22:09Speaker 1: seven carries, dear lord, and when you're hurtling a guy backwards,
- 22:13Speaker 1: you're gonna get an A plus from me. A plus.
- 22:15Speaker 1: What do you think, buddy.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm just gonna remove smooth Kenny g from this
- 22:22Speaker 2: this ranking, and it's gonna come in again at the
- 22:25Speaker 2: special teams grade. I told you what I was gonna
- 22:27Speaker 2: give the special teams grade as long as they have
- 22:30Speaker 2: him returning kicks. Yeah, the unest thing ever, I give
- 22:34Speaker 2: them an A.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Okay, sounds good. Let's go to the receivers and tight ends.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Still don't have Dallas Goddard out there, but Grant Calcatara
- 22:43Speaker 1: is getting some targets. Five targets caught all five balls
- 22:46Speaker 1: for thirty yards. Yeah, you only average six yards per carry.
- 22:49Speaker 1: But with this team as asking of Grant calcata by
- 22:51Speaker 1: the way, he's getting it done on a week to
- 22:53Speaker 1: week basis without Dallas Goddard out there. A lot of
- 22:56Speaker 1: these numbers are very similar Goddard like type of numbers too,
- 23:00Speaker 1: So something for us to keep in mind for the future, folks.
- 23:03Speaker 1: But Devonte Smith, with six targets on the day leading
- 23:06Speaker 1: the team, came down with four balls for eighty seven
- 23:08Speaker 1: yards and a touchdown. He averaged twenty one point eight
- 23:10Speaker 1: yards per reception. Then Saquon Barkley with three receptions for
- 23:15Speaker 1: forty yards. Johan Dotson with that amazing thirty six yarder
- 23:18Speaker 1: that he caught basically one handed. Fantastic. AJ Brown went
- 23:23Speaker 1: out with an injury, and I forgot to mention the
- 23:25Speaker 1: injuries right at the top. But he only had two
- 23:27Speaker 1: receptions for thirty six yards. So yes, AJ Brown knee
- 23:31Speaker 1: injury and not good, not good at all when he's
- 23:35Speaker 1: not out there because Jalen doesn't necessarily look the same.
- 23:37Speaker 1: But I'm gonna get the wide receivers and the tight
- 23:40Speaker 1: ends this week. I'm gonna give him an A minus.
- 23:43Speaker 1: What do you give him this week? Buddy?
- 23:45Speaker 2: I think they get an A? Okay, I mean they
- 23:47Speaker 2: did exactly. They made Hurts better. They made Hurts better,
- 23:52Speaker 2: and that's part of their job. If I'm expecting Hurts
- 23:56Speaker 2: to be a middle third quarterback in the NFL, he's
- 23:59Speaker 2: gonna need help from his receivers.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Yep.
- 24:01Speaker 2: And they did just that.
- 24:03Speaker 1: All right. We're right around the same vicinity there the
- 24:05Speaker 1: offensive line. But there were some ups and downs with
- 24:09Speaker 1: this offensive line today. Decent amount of false starts, there
- 24:13Speaker 1: was what am I thinking about? Sorry, I can't remember
- 24:18Speaker 1: off the top of my head. I kind of lost
- 24:19Speaker 1: it there. But some undisciplined play is basically where I
- 24:22Speaker 1: was gonna go with this run the run game, fantastic
- 24:28Speaker 1: pass protection at times not all that great. However, I
- 24:31Speaker 1: am gonna give them a B plus this week. What
- 24:33Speaker 1: do you give the offensive line?
- 24:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna do an A minus because I think
- 24:41Speaker 2: the three sacks that happened, I think were because herts
- 24:45Speaker 2: held onto the ball too long.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Yea, so two of those were friend Johnson too. By
- 24:48Speaker 1: the way, he had a rough first half, kind of
- 24:51Speaker 1: did it together in the second half.
- 24:53Speaker 2: But I mean, Barkley is running through wide open holes.
- 24:57Speaker 2: So I mean, I really can't ask, especially con tering.
- 25:01Speaker 2: You know, you're missing some people on the offensive line
- 25:03Speaker 2: they got. I really can't be upset about what they're doing.
- 25:06Speaker 2: I give him an A.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Okay, you know what, McKai Beckton, A fantastic game from him. Boy,
- 25:11Speaker 1: you want to talk about a career change with him
- 25:14Speaker 1: for when he was on the Jets where he is
- 25:16Speaker 1: right now and what he's doing for this offense and
- 25:19Speaker 1: the fact that we want him out there, we need
- 25:21Speaker 1: him out there. McKai Beckton was keeping my eye on
- 25:23Speaker 1: him today. Very very good game. So let's move over
- 25:26Speaker 1: to the defensive line. I'm gonna give the defensive line
- 25:30Speaker 1: a C plus. I you know, was a little disappointed
- 25:33Speaker 1: in the fact that, you know, they only got two sacks.
- 25:37Speaker 1: This is an offensive line that's really not all that great.
- 25:40Speaker 1: In fact, they're one of their key offensive linemen. We're
- 25:43Speaker 1: just traded this past week, so they have had major
- 25:47Speaker 1: issues on the offensive line. There were three tackles for
- 25:51Speaker 1: a loss and there were only three quarterback hits too,
- 25:54Speaker 1: So I'm gonna get the defensive line a C plus.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Bryce Huff not a lot of play and he wasn't
- 26:01Speaker 1: on the injury report, so something's going on with him
- 26:03Speaker 1: behind the scenes as well. But C plus for me
- 26:06Speaker 1: for the defensive line, what do you give him, buddy?
- 26:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I guess I'll go with C.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Okay.
- 26:16Speaker 2: I mean, they didn't kill you, but it wasn't like
- 26:21Speaker 2: they really stood out. They were okay, So I guess
- 26:25Speaker 2: the C.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, sounds good. Let's go to the linebackers. They're
- 26:29Speaker 1: getting an A plus for me especially. I mean, of course,
- 26:31Speaker 1: you got Nacobe Dean sealing it at the end of
- 26:34Speaker 1: the game where they absolutely needed a play like that.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Zach Bond with ten total tackles on the day, one
- 26:41Speaker 1: tackle for a loss. He had two passes defended. I
- 26:44Speaker 1: couldn't believe that. One of the first plays of the
- 26:47Speaker 1: game and he's knocking down passes in coverage. Zach Bond,
- 26:52Speaker 1: Nakobe Dean a plus for me today. What do you
- 26:54Speaker 1: give him, Jeff?
- 26:56Speaker 2: Did you know it was possible for linebackers to not
- 26:59Speaker 2: be a afraid of hitting. I've learned that this year.
- 27:05Speaker 2: It's wild. I thought this was just something that I
- 27:08Speaker 2: read about on the internet. It's actually pretty crazy. They
- 27:13Speaker 2: have been the biggest surprise for me this season. It
- 27:19Speaker 2: is amazing what it looks like when you have linebackers
- 27:23Speaker 2: who are willing to be physical, and I think it
- 27:26Speaker 2: helps Vic Fangio in the sense of him being able
- 27:29Speaker 2: to do that. Where the corners play back off the ball,
- 27:33Speaker 2: you have people in the middle of the field now
- 27:35Speaker 2: that I don't know that receivers are really looking forward
- 27:40Speaker 2: to running over the middle of the field, which is
- 27:43Speaker 2: very different than especially the last couple of years. I
- 27:48Speaker 2: really think what this is showing is just how bad
- 27:52Speaker 2: the coaching staff was around Nick Sirianni last year. Maybe
- 27:56Speaker 2: it wasn't a great idea to bring in Jalen's buddy. Yeah,
- 28:01Speaker 2: and maybe it was a really bad idea to try
- 28:05Speaker 2: the defensive coordinator route and hiring two first time coordinators
- 28:10Speaker 2: with a relatively new head coach. That sounds just crazy.
- 28:14Speaker 2: I can't believe I'm saying it. But yeah, anyway, long answer,
- 28:18Speaker 2: they get an A plus.
- 28:19Speaker 1: We're certainly not seeing Sean decide defensive scheme with regard
- 28:24Speaker 1: to the linebackers for sure, so all right' but hey, yeah.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Nick Sirianni's call him defensive place, he says, I.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Know, I know he had the chance to call a
- 28:32Speaker 1: few recently. I wonder if I wonder if he called
- 28:36Speaker 1: any of this game. I have to wait see after
- 28:38Speaker 1: the presser. So let's move to the secondary. Josh. It's
- 28:43Speaker 1: just you should see his his head is in his hands,
- 28:45Speaker 1: just like, oh, this freaking guy.
- 28:48Speaker 2: But the second better myself, this freaking guy, Yes, exactly.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Look the the receiving one hundred and sixty nine total
- 28:57Speaker 2: receiving yards ten point six yards per Evan Ingram led
- 29:01Speaker 2: the team with forty five yards. Parker Washington with forty
- 29:05Speaker 2: one yards, Austin Trammel with forty yards. Like there was
- 29:09Speaker 2: a Brian Thomas who has been one of their go
- 29:12Speaker 2: to guys. He was targeted only four times in this
- 29:15Speaker 2: game for twenty two yards. I think the secondary did
- 29:18Speaker 2: a very good job in this game. Yes, they gave
- 29:20Speaker 2: up some big chunk yardage here and there throughout the
- 29:24Speaker 2: course of the second half, mainly you know, halfway through
- 29:27Speaker 2: the third quarter and into the fourth quarter. But I'm
- 29:29Speaker 2: still gonna give them a B plus this week. I
- 29:31Speaker 2: think they did a pretty darn good job. Yes, the
- 29:34Speaker 2: wide receiver corps for the Jacksonville Jaguars were banged up,
- 29:37Speaker 2: but I'm still I'm gonna give them a B plus
- 29:39Speaker 2: because I think they did their jobs this week. What
- 29:40Speaker 2: do you give them? Yeah, I'm gonna give him an
- 29:43Speaker 2: A plus.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Okay.
- 29:45Speaker 2: I mean one of the things to consider is that
- 29:47Speaker 2: Darius Slay, who is the leader really for that defense,
- 29:51Speaker 2: was an end today. So you now have your first
- 29:54Speaker 2: round pick and second round pick having to play critical roles. Yeah,
- 29:59Speaker 2: And I think it it's just wild to me that
- 30:02Speaker 2: the Eagles drafted what looks like to be their cornerback
- 30:05Speaker 2: duo in the same draft, and not just like average corners,
- 30:09Speaker 2: but really good physical, smart corners.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Yes, in the same draft, solid shutdown down.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's amazing.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:19Speaker 2: And you know what Avonte Maddicks played today, and other
- 30:22Speaker 2: than really that one play, he wasn't a liability because
- 30:26Speaker 2: of the other two corners that you have. Yeah, so
- 30:29Speaker 2: really they get an A from me?
- 30:30Speaker 1: All right, sounds good Special teams. I'm gonna give special
- 30:34Speaker 1: teams this week a B. Mind. I don't even know
- 30:38Speaker 1: if I should give him a B minus actually, because
- 30:40Speaker 1: I was thinking of the miss Jake Elliott field goal,
- 30:42Speaker 1: the fifty seven yarder. But you know what, Nick put
- 30:44Speaker 1: him in that position, and he probably shouldn't have been
- 30:47Speaker 1: in that position at that time. Jake Elliott was one
- 30:50Speaker 1: of two on the day as long as forty three.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Like I just said, he missed the fifty seven yarder.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Braden Man, he had three punts today. He was only
- 30:59Speaker 1: averaging forty eight point seven yards per punt. Not a
- 31:02Speaker 1: big fan of that, but we know that special teams
- 31:05Speaker 1: had that turnover in the first punt return of the game.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Kiey Ringo jumping on that ball. I don't know. I
- 31:13Speaker 1: guess I'll give special teams a B this week. I
- 31:16Speaker 1: think a B. What do you give them?
- 31:18Speaker 2: Oh, I give him a day as long as they
- 31:20Speaker 2: continue to run smooth. Kenny g out there to return
- 31:24Speaker 2: kicks like, sorry, you're gonna get a D because it's
- 31:28Speaker 2: horrible decision.
- 31:29Speaker 1: It is it's that is a terrible decision for sure.
- 31:31Speaker 1: All right, Well, let's move to the defensive coaching. Vic Fangio.
- 31:35Speaker 1: I am going to give him an A minus this week,
- 31:38Speaker 1: could be an A. I think the defense generally generally
- 31:42Speaker 1: performed very well. Of course, holding the Jags to thirty
- 31:46Speaker 1: six total yards in the first half, even throughout part
- 31:49Speaker 1: of the first what maybe six minutes of the second
- 31:53Speaker 1: or second half to it was still thirty six yards.
- 31:56Speaker 1: So I gotta give vic Fangio a ton of credit
- 32:00Speaker 1: for this game. Yes, the Jaguars not a great team,
- 32:03Speaker 1: but I think he came in scheming where, what, where
- 32:06Speaker 1: and how he needed to get it done, and for
- 32:08Speaker 1: the most part did. This was a Nick Sirianni failure.
- 32:11Speaker 1: The failures we saw in this game wasn't because of
- 32:13Speaker 1: Vic Fangio. I'm gonna I'm gonna give him a I'm
- 32:15Speaker 1: actually gonn give him an A this week. What do he
- 32:17Speaker 1: give him?
- 32:18Speaker 2: Oh, I give him an A plus.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Okay.
- 32:20Speaker 2: I mean eight points of the twenty three were because
- 32:24Speaker 2: of a turnover that is returned for a touchdown, right,
- 32:27Speaker 2: So I can't knock him for eight points. And the
- 32:31Speaker 2: Eagles stopped them when they were put in a horrible
- 32:34Speaker 2: spot by the head coach. Right, they had the ball
- 32:38Speaker 2: at midfield with over two minutes left in the game. Yes, yes,
- 32:43Speaker 2: and somehow they didn't score, even overcoming a really boneheaded
- 32:47Speaker 2: play by Maddox. As far as I'm concerned, Vic Fangio
- 32:50Speaker 2: gets an A plus.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Okay, all right, sounds good, Nick Sirianni, Kellen Moore, maybe
- 32:56Speaker 1: two different grades, because I know you've done this before,
- 32:59Speaker 1: two different grades. You could certainly do that again, my friend,
- 33:02Speaker 1: But I'm gonna over it. From an overall perspective, I'm
- 33:05Speaker 1: gonna give them a B minus. And that's been It
- 33:08Speaker 1: really goes to what you were saying earlier. I think
- 33:10Speaker 1: you were very convincing with regard to your argument that
- 33:12Speaker 1: it's Nick Sirianni who is the problem here. We know
- 33:15Speaker 1: that Kellen Moore has done a great job of putting
- 33:18Speaker 1: the offensive pieces together where these guys can be and
- 33:21Speaker 1: have been successful despite Nick Sirianni. So I'm gonna give
- 33:27Speaker 1: a B minus this week to the overall offensive coaching.
- 33:30Speaker 1: But I have a feeling you're gonna be giving me
- 33:31Speaker 1: two grades here, right.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Yeah. Kellen Moore gets an A, all right, there were
- 33:36Speaker 2: creative plays. He did what he had to do. Uh
- 33:40Speaker 2: he he gets an A. Nick Sirianni gets a gets
- 33:43Speaker 2: a D.
- 33:43Speaker 1: Yeah, a D minus.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:45Speaker 2: And the only reason it's not an F is because
- 33:47Speaker 2: they won.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:49Speaker 2: I really am beginning to think that the beginning of
- 33:52Speaker 2: the season, Nick Sirianni had more influence on play calling, yeah,
- 33:57Speaker 2: and and game planning. And I think what happened that
- 34:00Speaker 2: the bye week was the conversation happened. And I think
- 34:03Speaker 2: that maybe Jeff Lori and Howie Roseman said something to Nick, like, hey, Nick,
- 34:10Speaker 2: the agreement was that we were gonna let Kellen run
- 34:13Speaker 2: the offense.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:14Speaker 2: And if you look at the Eagles offense now, it
- 34:17Speaker 2: looks like the offense that he ran at other locations
- 34:21Speaker 2: when he was in charge of play call. Absolutely, That's
- 34:23Speaker 2: why I'm saying Nick Sirianni had to have something to
- 34:27Speaker 2: do with the first four weeks, because this offense looks
- 34:30Speaker 2: night and day different from those first four weeks.
- 34:34Speaker 1: A great point, Josh, because we saw Dak Prescott under
- 34:38Speaker 1: center a decent amount. We've been seeing Jalen Hurts under
- 34:41Speaker 1: center a decent amount. I think there may be something
- 34:43Speaker 1: to that, my friend. So great postgame show, great postgame show.
- 34:47Speaker 1: You got anything else, buddy before we head out?
- 34:51Speaker 2: No, No, it was a wild weekend. I got the
- 34:55Speaker 2: win from Liverpool which was great, a semi miracle, and
