- 0:00Yeah, Outlive game. Um, if you don't
- 0:02have your shirts yet, outlive.org. And
- 0:04if not, they should be selling them in
- 0:06all the different concourses. So, um,
- 0:08you know, we got a long sleeve option
- 0:10this year, which is really exciting.
- 0:12And, uh, you know, looking for trying to
- 0:15get as close to 100% participation as we
- 0:18can. Um, you know, it's a
- 0:21really, um, you know, it's a great
- 0:23cause. Um, you know, it's uh it's unique
- 0:27because uh the funds are going not
- 0:30towards like cancer research, but it's
- 0:32going uh towards funds at the discretion
- 0:36um of those that it's being given to.
- 0:39So, it can help with a mortgage payment
- 0:40or a gas bill or grocery bills,
- 0:43utilities, different things that you
- 0:45don't really think about um
- 0:48having to burden you when you're when
- 0:50you're fighting this fight with cancer.
- 0:52And uh you know something we're
- 0:54incredibly proud of. Uh our family's
- 0:56been you know really adamant about this
- 0:58for for for a long time since we were at
- 1:00Tennessee and you know Jackie's done a
- 1:02great job of taking over um everything
- 1:04with the family foundation and um you
- 1:07know just want to continue to raise as
- 1:10much money and as much awareness as we
- 1:11possibly can. um you know, there's going
- 1:13to be uh stations set up for um blood
- 1:18tests uh for uh prostate cancer and then
- 1:22there's going to be cheek swabs uh for
- 1:26to be on like a donor list. Um so, a lot
- 1:29of really a lot of really cool stuff and
- 1:31um stuff we're obviously very proud of
- 1:33and want to continue to put in front of
- 1:36our fans and we appreciate you know our
- 1:38fans being so supportive uh in this
- 1:40initiative. So with that, take any
- 1:41questions.
- 1:43>> Justin,
- 1:45>> Stephen, just talk about the challenge.
- 1:46Is this
- 1:48>> on?
- 1:48>> You're good.
- 1:49>> Uh, just talk about the challenge of
- 1:51keeping the guys when you you're going
- 1:52through this skid, you also want to
- 1:54remind them of some of the things
- 1:55they've done this year, whether it's
- 1:56hard or even the second half Mississippi
- 1:58State. How do you sort of pick them up,
- 2:00remind them of that, get them back on
- 2:01track where I know they're they're
- 2:03certainly down right now.
- 2:05This has been a resilient group and um
- 2:08you know we had a great we had a great
- 2:09practice yesterday like if you're in the
- 2:11building the energy was like we have won
- 2:13five in a row so it's commendable and um
- 2:17you know I think they uh have done a
- 2:19good job of just kind of blocking out
- 2:20the noise and we've done a good job of
- 2:22just trying to stay present in what
- 2:24we're doing and you know recognizing
- 2:26that there's a lot of things that we got
- 2:27to get better at. Um, you know, mainly
- 2:30we got to stop letting the posing team's
- 2:32best player just beat us. And, uh, we
- 2:34got to stop getting off to such slow
- 2:36starts. You know, in five of our last
- 2:38six games, we've been down 13 or more in
- 2:40the first half. So, we got to figure
- 2:41out, you know, we're trying to figure
- 2:43out ways to combat that because, you
- 2:45know, in our four game winning streak
- 2:47and when we had won five out of six, you
- 2:50know, we had done a good job of not
- 2:51getting off to slow starts. Texas was
- 2:53the only game in that stretch where we
- 2:55didn't get off to a great start and we
- 2:56were able to battle back. Um, but you
- 2:59know, you look at those 16 minutes in
- 3:01the second half of Missouri or sorry, of
- 3:04Mississippi State and uh, you know, like
- 3:06you said, Justin, you got to remind him
- 3:07of those cuz those were fun. That was a
- 3:09fun 16 minutes to coach. It was a fun 16
- 3:11minutes to watch and I know it was a fun
- 3:1316 minutes for them to play. We just got
- 3:14to find a way to be more consistent. And
- 3:16if we can do that, you know, we can we
- 3:18can start to make our run.
- 3:20>> Going off that, like what did you see
- 3:22was the biggest difference between maybe
- 3:23the start and then the the that second
- 3:26half run. Um, I know you would talk
- 3:27about playing desperately, you know,
- 3:29after the game. You think it's it's just
- 3:30kind of turning it up a little bit more
- 3:32earlier in games or, you know, something
- 3:34else?
- 3:35>> Yeah, I mean, we can't wait till we're
- 3:37down 16 to or 18 and Hubard's got 35 to
- 3:40start, you know, executing the game
- 3:43plan. you know, we if he made nine
- 3:46threes in the first half, um you know,
- 3:49three of them, well, no, probably like
- 3:51five of them were just scouting report
- 3:53mistakes where we just weren't at the
- 3:54level. We didn't impact, we didn't get
- 3:56the ball out of his hands. You know, we
- 3:58gapped um we gapped a pin down. Um you
- 4:02know, we we laid on a couple screens. We
- 4:05didn't top lock. Our bigs weren't, you
- 4:08know, at the level of their man to be
- 4:09able to jump out. Now, he made just
- 4:11three like what in the world shots, you
- 4:13know, but he's capable of doing that and
- 4:16we told him that he's capable of doing
- 4:17that. And as soon as he sees one or two
- 4:19go in, the rim looks like a hula hoop to
- 4:21that guy. So, um yeah, we and you know,
- 4:26the first last five games, the first
- 4:28possession, we've had a we haven't
- 4:31executed our coverages correctly on the
- 4:33very first possession, and I just we got
- 4:35to stop doing that. So, um, yeah, I
- 4:38mean, we we got to find a way to fly
- 4:40around more early in games, um, to get
- 4:42us more engaged on the defensive end.
- 4:47>> Stephen Ted's got notes here that
- 4:48Kucky's the best three-point shooting
- 4:49team in the league during SEC play. You
- 4:51mentioned getting off to better starts
- 4:53defensively. Do you feel like that's
- 4:54kind of been a theme whether it's
- 4:56Hubard, Vanderbilt, Alabama, they've
- 4:58kind of had some early three-point
- 4:59shots. Do you think that's kind of been
- 5:00a theme that's allowed those teams to
- 5:02get confidence and then you guys maybe
- 5:03are better in the scouting report later
- 5:05on? I guess how do you kind of get them
- 5:06to hone in a little earlier in the game?
- 5:09>> Yeah, I mean um Alabama we were too flat
- 5:13on a ball screen and they hit a three in
- 5:15the corner. Vanderbilt we got caught uh
- 5:18on a on a back door where they then came
- 5:20off a dribble handoff and he hit a
- 5:22really tough one. Uh Mississippi State,
- 5:24they missed their first couple, but they
- 5:25got extra possessions. U actually no,
- 5:27they made their first one. they we
- 5:29messed up two switches and uh you know
- 5:33um he was standing wide open at the top
- 5:34of the floor. Now he's made eight threes
- 5:36all year and he made two in that game.
- 5:38Um so you know there's been a little bit
- 5:41of that this year. Um but yeah, we we
- 5:44just got to do a better job of executing
- 5:45early in the scouting report and uh you
- 5:47know we just can't let guys that can
- 5:50really shoot it. um you know, get get
- 5:53easy ones, get clean ones, and um you
- 5:57know, it's uh you know, Mississippi
- 5:59State makes seven threes a game. They
- 6:00made 16, you know, so it's it's going to
- 6:02be really hard to beat teams when they
- 6:04do that. Um but yeah, we uh recognize
- 6:08that KY's a really good three-point
- 6:09shooting team. Um um they shoot good
- 6:12percentages, but you know, they're still
- 6:14probably better from two overall than
- 6:15they are from three just because they do
- 6:17a great job attacking downhill and get
- 6:18into the paint. But, you know, like
- 6:20Chandler's a guy that like you got to
- 6:22treat like Tyler Nickel from Vanderbilt.
- 6:23You can't you can't allow him to get
- 6:25anything clean off cuz I think he's made
- 6:2720 in his last five games. You know,
- 6:29Aberdeen's a guy that, you know, with
- 6:31time and space can really make shots and
- 6:33can be streaky. You know, OA um has the
- 6:36green light, you know, and he can knock
- 6:38down shots, too. So, they got three
- 6:39guards that can all really shoot it.
- 6:40And, uh, you know, we got to do a Noah
- 6:42coming off the bench can shoot it. So,
- 6:44just got to recognize where shooters are
- 6:46and uh do a better job in our closeouts.
- 6:49I want to ask you about Oway and
- 6:50defending him like he's probably the
- 6:52most consistent, you know, high level
- 6:54scorer in the NC this year with the
- 6:55amount of 20 point games he's had. The
- 6:56challenges of defending him, especially
- 6:58knowing that, you know, he's had to
- 6:59carry a lot of this offense this year
- 7:01with the injuries they've had.
- 7:02>> Yeah, I want to say 11 out of the 13
- 7:04conference games, had 20 or more. So,
- 7:07>> um, does a really good job of driving
- 7:08either direction, getting downhill, um,
- 7:12you know, really physical, uh, getting
- 7:14to the rim and, you know, if he can make
- 7:16one, he can make three. um you know can
- 7:18get to his mid-range. I think he shoots
- 7:2075% inside the paint which is you know
- 7:23pretty pretty impressive. So we got to
- 7:26do a really good job of uh you know
- 7:28trying to limit you know his his touches
- 7:30around the rim um and got to try and
- 7:33keep him out of the paint as best we
- 7:34can.
- 7:35>> You were talking about around the rim. I
- 7:37mean that's been a problem the last few
- 7:39games on both ends of the court as well.
- 7:40I mean you're only five of 14 on layups
- 7:43the other day and they're seven of 10. I
- 7:45mean, just is is the offensive problem
- 7:48because teams are backing it in so much
- 7:50and just, you know, giving you the three
- 7:52or what are you seeing?
- 7:53>> Well, we went like 12 for 24 from three,
- 7:55so I don't think that's the problem. We
- 7:57just missed layups. Um, yeah, we we've
- 8:01been a really good two-point shooting
- 8:02team all year. Um, we just haven't three
- 8:05out of the last four games. So, um,
- 8:08yeah, we got to do a better job, you
- 8:11know, and I it's cuz we played off one
- 8:12foot and, uh, all we talk about is not
- 8:15playing off one foot. You got to play
- 8:16off two. So, showing them possessions
- 8:19yesterday, just every time we played off
- 8:20two, it was either a foul or a made
- 8:22layup. Every time he played off one, it
- 8:23was a miss layup, no foul. So, we kind
- 8:26of got away from what we've been doing,
- 8:27playing off two feet in that game. And
- 8:30uh you I thought we shot the ball better
- 8:31from three. Made made made 12 in the
- 8:33game. Um which you know should uh you
- 8:35should be able to win a lot of games
- 8:36doing that. Um but obviously when they
- 8:39make 16 it makes it a little more
- 8:40difficult.
- 8:42>> You were talking about how good practice
- 8:43was yesterday and the energy was and how
- 8:45resilient this group has been just for a
- 8:47new team or a team bunch of guys and
- 8:49played together before and it's the
- 8:51first time. Where's that where do you
- 8:52think that comes from just with guys?
- 8:54me. No, I'm joking.
- 8:57No. Um, no. I mean, I think
- 9:01I think, you know, um,
- 9:05you know, the things that I say, it's
- 9:07not just lip service. Like, they I think
- 9:08they believe it, too. Like, they they
- 9:09believe that they're capable of making a
- 9:11run. And that that's that's where I
- 9:13think that energy comes from is that,
- 9:15you know, they know that, you know, and
- 9:18we're not going to say the C-word, but
- 9:20we're right there. You know, we just got
- 9:22to get over the hump, man. like um we
- 9:25lost to four really really good teams.
- 9:27One of those without was without our
- 9:29best player and then you know he had 46
- 9:32freaking points. So it's like golly you
- 9:35know we're just we're we're right there
- 9:37and we just got to finish. we got to
- 9:38push it over the edge and uh you know um
- 9:43so I think that the reason why there's
- 9:44good energy is because they they just
- 9:46they recognize that we're we're very
- 9:48we're more than capable um if we can
- 9:50just you know finish and that's that's
- 9:53what we got to do in these last five
- 9:55games is we got to finish possessions,
- 9:57you know, we got to finish games.
- 10:00>> Stephen, I'm I'm curious at this point
- 10:02in the season, you guys have had some
- 10:03highs and lows. I mean, do you do you
- 10:05reach out to your dad for for counsel at
- 10:07any point? right now. I mean, how much
- 10:08do you speak with them necessarily for
- 10:11advice or anything like that? Or are you
- 10:12guys just so deep in trying to finish
- 10:14season, trying to get to March that
- 10:15that's not something necessarily on your
- 10:17mind that much?
- 10:18>> Uh, I mean, you know, we
- 10:20No, I don't I mean, I talk to him once a
- 10:24week pretty routinely, even when, you
- 10:25know, when we're winning, you know, if
- 10:27we're not winning. Um, so no, I mean,
- 10:31you know, he's whenever I need him, I'll
- 10:33reach out to him, but it hasn't been
- 10:34like, uh, you know, where I I've had to
- 10:37confide in him for counsel, you know,
- 10:40over these last this tough stretch cuz
- 10:43it's just it's just part of it, you
- 10:45know. Um, biggest thing is we just have
- 10:48to stay consistent with what we're
- 10:49doing. Um, and we just we can't panic.
- 10:52Um, so no, I mean, if I if I ever need
- 10:55him, he's there. Um, you know, he he's
- 10:58not reaching out to me, you know, cuz he
- 10:59he knows what what we're what we're in
- 11:01right now, what we're dealing with, what
- 11:02we're going through, and uh, you know,
- 11:04he knows when when I need him, I'll
- 11:05reach out to him.
- 11:10>> Just, you know, how the schedule shapes
- 11:12up with the, you know, the lack of, I
- 11:14guess, major, you know, quad one
- 11:16opportunities left, you know, making
- 11:18this game important. Is that something
- 11:19that you, you know, address honestly
- 11:21with the team and, you know, that this
- 11:23game is big because of that or do you
- 11:25just keep the focus on, you know, this
- 11:27game is big because it's the next game
- 11:28is another opportunity out?
- 11:30>> I mean, 60% of our remaining games are
- 11:32quad ones. So, is that a lack of quad
- 11:35one opportunities?
- 11:37>> Well, just in terms of I mean, I guess
- 11:38>> Oh, seriously. Yeah. If you look at our
- 11:40last eight and it's not eight in a row.
- 11:41>> Yeah.
- 11:42>> Yeah, I got you.
- 11:43>> The next, you know,
- 11:44>> I'm just messing with you, Peter.
- 11:47>> Um, no. I mean, they're all they're
- 11:49right now they're just they're all
- 11:50equally important because like you know
- 11:53we have five quality wins already this
- 11:55year and every one that you can add on
- 11:57top of this you know is is significant
- 11:59at this point in the year. So you know
- 12:02um every win is is a way to win your win
- 12:04yourself into the tournament or win
- 12:06yourself into better seating in the SEC
- 12:07tournament and every loss is you know a
- 12:09way to lose yourself out of the
- 12:10tournament and lose yourself in seating.
- 12:12So they they recognize what it is. I
- 12:14mean you know they they know where we're
- 12:15at right now. They they know exactly
- 12:17where we're at right now. And um yeah, I
- 12:21think
- 12:23I think we as coaches probably put more
- 12:25pressure on ourselves than young people
- 12:27do. You know, I don't think they, you
- 12:29know, feel that pressure as much. They
- 12:32feel that pressure for I think they feel
- 12:33that pressure for like Key Keshan Hall
- 12:36and Keshan Murphy. Murf's never won a
- 12:37tournament game and Keshan Hall's never
- 12:39been there. So, I think collectively
- 12:40they'd like for them both to be able to
- 12:42experience that. So, I think that's
- 12:44where there's a little pressure in
- 12:45there. But besides that, like I think
- 12:47they they have a full awareness and
- 12:48understanding of you know the
- 12:51um you know the urgency of what needs of
- 12:54how we got to play and how we do have to
- 12:57put our backs up against the wall and
- 12:58play desperate these last five to you
- 13:01know put ourselves in position to do a
- 13:03lot of the things that we set out to do
- 13:04at the beginning of the year because you
- 13:06know while we're sitting here at 14 and
- 13:0812 and you know we're not in as good of
- 13:10a spot as we'd like to be like we still
- 13:12are in position to accomplish you know a
- 13:14lot of the things that we talked about
- 13:16and we set out to earlier in the year.
- 13:17We just got to finish.
- 13:21>> You guys have had to play guys like
- 13:23entire halves, you know, keep play the
- 13:25entire game the other day. Just to be
- 13:26this deep in the season and still having
- 13:28that fight and kind of that energy. What
- 13:29does that kind of say about you guys and
- 13:31the conditioning especially going down
- 13:33the stretch because, you know, it's a
- 13:35it's thinner than what y'all are usually
- 13:37used to, but obviously there's reasons
- 13:38for that. Yeah, I mean obviously not you
- 13:41know with Mech and Abdul both being out
- 13:43with injuries for the year like you know
- 13:45it just makes it really difficult and
- 13:47the other guys that you have are
- 13:49freshman you know so it's like you know
- 13:52it's you're putting a lot on those on
- 13:54those seven or eight guys and uh but
- 13:57it's a credit to them and how hard they
- 13:59work you know like you know Keith's in
- 14:01here working out every single day. Todd
- 14:02was in here last night getting an extra
- 14:04workout in and was is getting shots
- 14:05right now. Like, you know, all those
- 14:07guys, you know, work worked their tails
- 14:09off and, you know, it's a credit to
- 14:11coach D and and Clark and the work that
- 14:13they put in uh to help these guys be,
- 14:15you know, in tip-top shape. And, you
- 14:17know, Keith plays 40 minutes the other
- 14:18night and you really don't recognize any
- 14:21like lack of effort or energy when he's
- 14:22out there. So, it it's, you know, Todd
- 14:25Todd's getting, you know, in much better
- 14:28shape as the year's gone on. And um you
- 14:30know it's just a testament to to the
- 14:32work that they've put in to be able to
- 14:34you know be in those situations. Um but
- 14:36that's you know if you look across the
- 14:37country like that's kind of the norm now
- 14:39is there's seven eightman rotations now.
- 14:41We we would like to have nine cuz then I
- 14:43feel like we could just fly around a
- 14:45little bit more defensively and be a
- 14:46more a little more effective on that
- 14:48end. Um but you know with what we got
- 14:51you know we got we got seven really
- 14:52talented players that can go out there
- 14:54and be impactful. So, um, you know, we
- 14:57just
- 14:58got to, you know, just stay healthy and
- 15:00just just keep pushing.
