- 0:01We tend to associate the process we call thinking with the linear
- 0:06sequence of words that organize our understanding in our mind.
- 0:10We thus associate thinking with language and indicate that our
- 0:15thinking is limited by the language.
- 0:18A language that is rich in words and nuances will yield more
- 0:22advanced and complex thinking than a language that is simpler
- 0:26and more directly expressive of our outer experience in the
- 0:30world. According to this understanding,
- 0:34if we reflect upon it, however, we can actually separate
- 0:38thinking from language, and in doing so, we remove the
- 0:43limitation of language from the process of thinking.
- 0:47The case of Nikola Tesla is illuminating.
- 0:51In his autobiography, he describes some of the training
- 0:54he received as a child, which included guessing the thoughts
- 0:59of others and the use of visualization techniques.
- 1:04He later described how he developed various of his
- 1:08inventions not through linear thought, but through seeing them
- 1:13in his mind's eye. Albert Einstein also indicated
- 1:18that he thought using visualizations and images, not
- 1:22words, to understand the universe.
- 1:27Some of the greatest thinkers indicated that the use of
- 1:30language for thought was essentially a secondary process
- 1:35for them. An interesting experiment was
- 1:38carried out by a young child for a school project.
- 1:42She designed a method to test for the existence of the power
- 1:46of telepathy. She paired individuals with a
- 1:49barrier between them. They had various shapes and
- 1:53colors that one party, the sender was to focus on in his
- 1:57mind and the other party, the receiver was to identify without
- 2:02any speech intervening. Various pairs achieved results
- 2:07over 70 per cent accuracy, far beyond the potential of random
- 2:13chance. Although this was obviously a
- 2:16simple experiment and not a double-blind study, it did
- 2:20provide a measure of confidence that thought in the form of an
- 2:25imaged shape and colour could be communicated silently from one
- 2:30person to the other with no physical or verbal cues.
- 2:36The power of visualization itself acts without language.
- 2:40People who speak different languages are unable to easily
- 2:44communicate abstract ideas that depend on language, but can
- 2:49quite easily understand visualized images in the mind of
- 2:53the other person. Thought is clearly not limited
- 2:57to verbal structure or language, but to a comprehensive process
- 3:02of understanding that may or may not be tied to sequential inner
- 3:07dialogue of words. When we enter the presence of an
- 3:12individual who has developed the power of thought without the use
- 3:16of words, we can experience what many call an atmosphere which is
- 3:22conducive to liberating the mind from the formal structures that
- 3:26language imposes upon our thinking.
- 3:31There can come from this a new way of seeing and understanding,
- 3:37the mother observes. Quote.
- 3:40So if you want to exercise the least effect on the mental
- 3:43substance, the first thing is to learn how to think clearly.
- 3:48And not a verbal thought which depends on words, but a thought
- 3:52which can dispense with words, which can be understood in
- 3:56itself without words, which corresponds to a fact, the fact
- 4:02of a state of consciousness or a fact of knowledge.
- 4:06Just try to think without words. You will see where you stand.
- 4:11Have you never tried it? Well, then try.
- 4:16You have an absolutely clear and precise understanding of what
- 4:20you want to communicate to others.
- 4:22It vibrates in a special way. It has the power to give a form
- 4:27to the mental substance. And then afterwards, as a
- 4:33concession to human habits, you organize a certain number of
- 4:37words around it to try there much lower down, to give a
- 4:43verbal form to the vibration of consciousness.
- 4:47But the verbal form is entirely secondary.
- 4:50It is a kind of covering, a rather crude one, for the power
- 4:55of thought. End Quote.
