- 0:00Welcome to the Joe Rogan Recap. For today's Deep Dive, we're
- 0:03digging into a conversation with two pretty heavy hitting
- 0:06scientists, Richard Linson, who was at MIT for ages, and William
- 0:11Happer from Princeton. They shared some really
- 0:13skeptical views on the whole climate change narrative.
- 0:15Exactly. And our mission here is to
- 0:18really distill their arguments for you.
- 0:20Yeah, We want to give you a clear picture of why these
- 0:23academics with, you know, decades of high level experience
- 0:26are saying the whole climate discussion got hijacked by
- 0:29politics and, frankly, money. So we'll focus on their points
- 0:33about the science being uncertain, the massive role of
- 0:36funding and what they describe as well suppression of
- 0:39dissenting views. Yeah, that's the core of it,
- 0:41isn't it? These aren't outsiders looking
- 0:42in. They were inside the system.
- 0:44Lindson, Harvard doctorate, the 35 years at MIT.
- 0:46He literally said the joy of his atmospheric science work just
- 0:50died when global warming became the dominant.
- 0:53Right. And Haber story really sets the
- 0:55scene. He was director of energy
- 0:56research under Bush Cangier. He talked about inviting
- 0:59scientists over to discuss their research funding.
- 1:02You know, taxpayer money. Most were apparently happy to
- 1:05explain their work, except the climate scientists.
- 1:09He described them as resentful and crucially, they apparently
- 1:13said they worked for Senator Gore, not the agency funding
- 1:16them. Wow, so even back.
- 1:18Then yeah, I'd suggest the political lines were drawn
- 1:20really early on, long before it became this huge public issue.
- 1:23It also makes you think about how these big environmental
- 1:26fears shift, doesn't it? Happer mentioned growing up when
- 1:29the big scare was an impending Ice Age.
- 1:31Remember Leonard Nimoy? And In Search of Oh yeah, and
- 1:34then boom, total switch to global warming.
- 1:37That pivot is actually central to their skepticism.
- 1:40They point out the temperatures were cooling from the 1930s to
- 1:43the 70s. Back then, the blame was put on
- 1:46sulfates from coal burning reflecting sunlight.
- 1:48But when the temperature started warming again in the late 70's,
- 1:52the narrative, they argue, just shifted.
- 1:55Suddenly, CO2 became the villain instead of sulfates.
- 1:59It kept the focus and maybe the funding going.
- 2:02So how did they turn CO2, which they initially said?
- 2:04Was it a main driver, into the primary cause for alarm?
- 2:08That seems like a big leap. Well, that's where they get into
- 2:11the modeling. They bring up Mana B's early
- 2:13work. His calculations apparently show
- 2:15that if you just double CO2, you only get about half a degree
- 2:19Celsius of warming. Pretty small, relatively
- 2:21speaking. Half a degree.
- 2:23That doesn't sound like the catastrophe we hear about.
- 2:25Exactly. Their point is that the big
- 2:27warming predictions come from an assumption built into the
- 2:29climate models. The models assume that relative
- 2:32humidity stays constant as the planet warms slightly from CO2.
- 2:36And why is that specific assumption so important?
- 2:39Because water vapor is a much much stronger greenhouse gas in
- 2:42CO2. So if you assume constant
- 2:45relative humidity, as the temperature ticks up that half
- 2:47degree from CO2, the air holds more absolute moisture, more
- 2:52water vapor. That extra water vapor then
- 2:55traps more heat, amplifying the initial CO2 warming.
- 2:58It might double it, maybe more deending on the model.
- 3:02OK, so the huge warming effect isn't just CO2, it's CO2 plus
- 3:06this assumed water vapor feedback.
- 3:09Precisely. And Lindzen and Happer argue
- 3:11that this feedback, this assumption about water vapor and
- 3:13clouds, is where the major uncertainty lies.
- 3:16They say it's not well understood at all.
- 3:18And this scientific uncertainty, they connect directly to money,
- 3:21big money. They argue the environmental
- 3:23movement figured this out. It wasn't just about saving the
- 3:25whales anymore. It shifted to the energy sector.
- 3:27And that's, that's trillions of dollars we're talking about.
- 3:30Trillions. Yeah, they estimate that these
- 3:33net 0 policies could cost hundreds of trillions globally
- 3:36if fully implemented. With that kind of money
- 3:39involved, it creates this enormous political and financial
- 3:44pull, a gravity well. Basically, the narrative has to
- 3:47continue almost regardless of the scientific details because
- 3:51so much is riding on. It and the practical result of
- 3:54that is you can't question it. That's their claim.
- 3:57Make the science sound settled, and then anyone who brings up,
- 4:00say, the water vapor issue or historical climate cycles gets
- 4:04labeled a climate change denier. It effectively shuts down
- 4:08scientific debate, they argue. It's a pretty stark accusation.
- 4:11And they point to a paradox they see even within the official
- 4:14IPCC reports. Those reports apparently admit
- 4:17that major factors like clouds and water vapor, which they
- 4:20acknowledge are way bigger climate drivers than CO2, are
- 4:23quote not understood at all. So how can the science be
- 4:27settled if the biggest pieces of the puzzle are still missing?
- 4:30OK, let's dig into the university side of this.
- 4:32How does this massive funding pressure actually work inside
- 4:36academia? It's not just abstract
- 4:37trillions, right? No, it gets very concrete.
- 4:40They explain this university overhead system.
- 4:42When researchers get large government grants, especially in
- 4:45climate science, the university often takes a huge cut off the
- 4:50top, like 50 or even 60% is overhead. 50 to 60% just skimmed
- 4:55off. Yeah, that money doesn't go to
- 4:57the actual research project. It goes straight to the
- 4:59university administration. Think buildings, administrative
- 5:03salaries expansion. So the institution itself has a
- 5:06massive financial stake in keeping those climate grants
- 5:09flowing. That's exactly their argument.
- 5:11Hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake for the
- 5:13university's bottom line, so there's immense pressure from
- 5:16the top down not to rock the boat.
- 5:19Don't challenge the narrative that brings in the cash.
- 5:22And this pressure effects individual scientists.
- 5:24Directly, Lindsen shared his own experience.
- 5:27He said he published a paper questioning some aspect of the
- 5:30narrative, and the editor of the journal who published it fired
- 5:34immediately. They said this happened twice,
- 5:37decades apart, with different journals.
- 5:39And that ties into those Climategate emails that came out
- 5:41years ago, remember, where scientists were caught
- 5:43discussing how to quote, block publication of skeptical papers
- 5:47and even get rid of editors who didn't toe the line?
- 5:50So peer review isn't necessarily about catching errors anymore.
- 5:54In this field, they argue, it's shifted.
- 5:56It's less about checking the math or preventing plagiarism
- 6:00and more about enforcing conformity, ensuring everyone
- 6:03sticks to the accepted narrative.
- 6:05And the real world impact of all this, they argue, hits the
- 6:08developing world hardest. Yeah, they really stressed this
- 6:10point. Pushing for net zero makes
- 6:13energy incredibly expensive. That means poorer countries
- 6:17can't afford to build the power plants they need, even modern,
- 6:20cleaner coal or natural gas plants.
- 6:22They argue it's keeping billions of people poorer longer.
- 6:26They pointed to the UK, where electricity prices have tripled,
- 6:29as an example of the pain even in a rich country.
- 6:32OK, let's shift gears a bit. They also talked about the
- 6:34actual science of CO2 itself, didn't they?
- 6:37Right. The sort of inconvenient thing
- 6:39about CO2, as they put it, is that it's plant food.
- 6:43The increase in CO2 in the atmosphere has actually led to a
- 6:46measurable greening of the planet.
- 6:48More plant growth, more arable land.
- 6:50They mentioned an anecdote from EO Wilson, the biologist.
- 6:54Yeah, that was fascinating. Wilson apparently pointed out
- 6:56that during the last Ice Age, the last glacial maximum, CO2
- 6:59levels dropped really low, down to about 180 parts per million.
- 7:04That's dangerously close to 150 PPM, which is like the
- 7:07starvation level for plants, Wilson suggested This low CO2
- 7:11nearly caused a complete wipeout of humans because the food
- 7:14supply collapsed. That really puts today's levels
- 7:17around 404 thirty PPM in a different perspective.
- 7:21It does, and it also highlights the scale issue they kept
- 7:24bringing up. People panic about half a degree
- 7:26or 1° of warming, but the difference between the peak or
- 7:29the last Ice Age, you know, massive ice sheets covering
- 7:32continents and today was only about 5°C globally.
- 7:35They're questioning if the current level of alarm is
- 7:38proportional to the actual numbers involved.
- 7:40And they also emphasized that CO2 isn't the only thing
- 7:43changing the climate. Not by a long shot.
- 7:46They talked about the big external drivers, things like
- 7:49the Milenkovic cycles, these long slow changes in Earth's
- 7:52orbit and tilt. Those are what really control
- 7:54the Ice Age rhythms based on how much summer sun hits the Arctic.
- 7:58And the sun itself. Absolutely the sun is in
- 8:00constant. They mentioned using proxies
- 8:02like carbon 14 and beryllium 10 isotopes to track past solar
- 8:06activity. This data shows the sun changes
- 8:10and it's linked to significant climate shifts in the past, like
- 8:13the Medieval Warm Period around 1000 AD.
- 8:15That's when the Norse were farming Greenland, clearly much
- 8:18warmer than today, and obviously long before industrial CO2
- 8:21emissions. So based on all this, Happer
- 8:23seemed to suggest the whole approach is flawed science.
- 8:26Yeah, his point was that science is supposed to be a methodology,
- 8:29not an unquestionable authority. You make predictions based on
- 8:33your theory. If the predictions fail, like
- 8:35they argue Al Gore's 2006 predictions did, you're supposed
- 8:38to fix the theory. But that's not what happens.
- 8:41They say no. Instead of fixing the models or
- 8:44questioning the core assumptions, the goal posts just
- 8:47get moved. The fear shifts from just
- 8:50warming to say, extreme weather, something harder to disprove
- 8:54definitively. They compared it to theology,
- 8:57where you adjust the interpretation rather than the
- 9:00core belief when evidence contradicts it.
- 9:02That leads into a really powerful and maybe controversial
- 9:05parallel Happer Drew. Yes, the eugenics movement in
- 9:08the early 20th century. He pointed out that eugenics
- 9:11wasn't some fringe idea back then.
- 9:13It was supported by the presidents of Harvard and
- 9:15Princeton, published and respected learning journals.
- 9:18It was considered settled science by the elite, and it LED
- 9:21directly to terrible policy like the deeply discriminatory 1924
- 9:25Immigration Act in the US. So the.
- 9:27Warning is just because the establishment says trust the
- 9:30science doesn't mean the science hasn't been captured by
- 9:32ideology. That's the core of the warning.
- 9:35History shows that scientific consensus, when influenced by
- 9:38politics or social pressure, can lead down some very dark paths.
- 9:42Science isn't immune to groupthink or fanaticism.
- 9:45And they see examples of this kind of thinking today.
- 9:47Absolutely. They pointed to Germany shutting
- 9:49down its perfectly good nuclear power plants because of green
- 9:52ideology. The result?
- 9:54Increased reliance on Russian gas, then scrambling to buy
- 9:58nuclear power back from France. It makes no logical sense from
- 10:01an energy or climate perspective, they argue.
- 10:03It's pure ideology. They also mentioned the focus
- 10:06shifting towards extreme weather scarce.
- 10:08Right, because it provides dramatic visuals for the news,
- 10:11even if the actual data they claim doesn't show a significant
- 10:15increase in hurricane frequency or intensity, for example.
- 10:19And this kind of fear driven narrative can lead to desperate
- 10:21measures. Like geoengineering?
- 10:23Exactly. They expressed real concern
- 10:26about proposals like Bill Gates funding research into spraying
- 10:30reflective particles in the atmosphere to dim the sun.
- 10:33They worry that politicians panicked by the narrative might
- 10:36actually authorize something like that based on flawed models
- 10:39with potentially catastrophic unforeseen consequences.
- 10:42It seems like the scale just keeps getting more extreme from
- 10:45CO2 models to global geoengineering.
- 10:48And sometimes it gets almost absurdly specific, like the
- 10:50focus on methane from livestock. Yes, the cow farts issue.
- 10:54Ireland talking about coming cattle herds.
- 10:57They use this as a prime example of what they called innumeracy,
- 11:00the inability to grasp numbers and scale.
- 11:03Yes, a methane molecule traps more heat than a CO2 molecule.
- 11:06It's more potent, but there's vastly, vastly less of it in the
- 11:09atmosphere. They argue that even if you
- 11:12eliminated all man made methane emissions tomorrow, the effect
- 11:15on global temperature would be negligible.
- 11:17Tiny. Yet you have policies causing
- 11:20real economic pain to farmers based on this because the simple
- 11:24cows or bad story is easier to sell than the atmosphere of
- 11:27chemistry. OK, so wrapping this all up, the
- 11:29core message from Lindsay and Happer in this deep dive seems
- 11:32to be what? It's that the climate narrative
- 11:34you hear constantly isn't primarily driven by settled,
- 11:37robust science, they argue, it's driven by money, those massive
- 11:41energy sector dollars and university overheads, political
- 11:43power and a kind of ideological fervor.
- 11:46This, they claim, has created a cult like atmosphere where
- 11:49questioning is forbidden and genuine scientific debate is
- 11:52suppressed. So what's their proposed
- 11:54solution? How do you fix something like
- 11:56that? It comes back to the funding.
- 11:58Stop pouring billions into only one side of the argument.
- 12:02Open up funding for research into alternate theories of
- 12:04climate change, maybe focusing more on solar cycles, ocean
- 12:08currents, natural variability. Let rigorous science with
- 12:12competing hypotheses actually happen.

- 12:18It's probably that old Russian proverb Reagan liked trust but
- 12:22verify. Now, now, verifying complex
- 12:25climate science is obviously hard for most people, so maybe
- 12:28the check is common sense in observing behavior.
- 12:31They stress that, you know, destroying the world is not an
- 12:33easy thing to do. It probably shouldn't be your
- 12:34absolute top worry. And perhaps look at what the
- 12:37elites actually do, not just what they say.
- 12:40When you see prominent figures who preach about rising sea
- 12:42level buying massive mansions right on the coast, well, it's
- 12:45just their actual concern level might not match their public
- 12:48statements.
